Keynsham Leisure Centre’s Riverside site

New company to oversee move for leisure centre Keynsham Leisure Centre will soon be under new management, which will oversee plans to build a new centre somewhere in the town. Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced that it has appointed Greenwich Leisure Limited to run its leisure centres from July 1. GLL will be responsible for taking charge of the project to replace Keynsham’s ageing sports facility at the Riverside complex. The new centre will include a pool, learner pool, fitness suite and studio space. A site has yet to be earmarked for the new centre and local councillors say residents must be involved in the process. Keynsham councillor Charles Gerrish, who is also deputy leader of the Conservative Group, said: “The signing of this new leisure contract is good news for Keynsham as it secures the future of leisure provision in our town, with a multi-million pound investment in the pipeline. “However, it is essential that Keynsham residents are fully and properly consulted over the future of leisure provision in our town before any plans for a new leisure centre are finalised. This is something we committed to prior to the election and we will ensure the council and its new

contractor fully engages with residents as proposals are developed in the months ahead. “We will also be seeking an urgent meeting with the new contractor to ensure they understand the aspirations of the community and that future provision meets with residents’ expectations.â€? The contract with GLL will see around ÂŁ17 million invested in upgrading and modernising the council sports centres, said council leader Tim Warren. Mark Sesnan, managing director for GLL, said, “We are very pleased to have been chosen to manage the leisure facilities in Bath and North East Somerset on behalf of the council. As a not for profit charitable social enterprise which operates over 170 sport and leisure facilities across the UK, our objective is to increase sports, health and physical activity in Bath and North East Somerset, and to bolster levels of sports participation in each of these leisure facilities.â€? B&NES leisure centres, including Keynsham, have been run by Aquaterra since 2003, whose chief executive Antony Kildare said the charity was “sad to be parting with a great community of people and staff, but are delighted with what we have been able to achieve in the last 12 yearsâ€?.

£60m redevelopment of factory blocks to begin Work on a £60 million project to transform Keynsham’s former chocolate factory buildings is due to begin next month. MF Freeman Group is behind plans that will see one of of the three factory blocks, block B, become a 135-bed care home while a second, block C, will provide employment space. The third, block A, will house up to 113 apartments. The developer is also currently working on plans to incorporate a new doctors’ surgery within block B. Luke Freeman, joint chief executive of M F Freeman Group, said: “We are delighted to have secured consent for the redevelopment of the former Cadbury factory at Keynsham. The scheme will be redeveloped into a £60million mixed-use scheme, which will comprise of offices, housing for the elderly and openmarket residential. “We are really looking forward to seeing the iconic landmark buildings being brought

back into beneficial use, which will complement the wider redevelopment of the site by Taylor Wimpey. “Work on site should commence by July of this year and the first activity to take place will be the partial demolition and making good of blocks B and C. “We are pleased with the strong interest we have received for the development, including progressing plans for a doctors’ surgery in block C. We are currently working up our plans for this doctors’ surgery and we hope to submit an application shortly. “This exciting redevelopment

will bring back employment to the local area and add further support to the town centre, which is already vibrant as a result of the recent redevelopment. The office block and housing for the elderly will provide jobs for a forecasted 1,000 people. “In summary this is great news for Keynsham and the wider Somerdale development.” Meanwhile, developer Taylor Wimpey has submitted a reserved matters application for Phase 2 of the Somerdale site, which will include 239 homes, a building to accommodate shops or a medical centre, public spaces called Fry Club Square, Somerdale Green and Avon View Green and a riverside path. Phase 2 surrounds the factory buildings and adjoins the new Fry Club. The proposals already have outline planning permission but now the developer must get approval for its detailed plans. The consultation period runs until June 11 and planners aim to make a decision in August.

Civic centre ‘excels’ as workplace, scooping title at regional awards Love it or loathe it, the awards keep on coming for Keynsham’s Civic Centre development. The offices, which accommodate hundreds of Bath and North East Somerset Council staff, have been named Best Corporate Workplace at the British Council for Offices (BCO) regional property sector awards. Judges were unanimous in saying the project, designed by architects AHR, met Bath and North East Somerset Council’s brief to provide a one-stop shop for the community with council services all under one roof and with more than half of the site for public use. Richard Kauntze, chief executive of the BCO, said: “The Keynsham Civic Centre is a great example of how a well considered workplace can have a positive impact beyond the immediate workforce. The development creates valuable new space for the public to enjoy, while combining a strong environmental consciousness with design flair.

The buildings’ environmental credentials, achieving an ‘A’ rated Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) through design features and solar panels, also impressed the judging panel. Judging chairman, John Wright of Stride Treglown, said: “The winners of the BCO South West, Thames Valley and South Wales Awards are all ambitious projects that have been hand-picked from a selection of top quality entries. The winning Keynsham project excels

as a flexible and sustainable civic workplace that also delivers regeneration to the local community. After being named winner in the South West, Thames Valley and South Wales regional awards at a ceremony at @Bristol last month, the civic centre will now

go on to compete at the national awards in October. It’s not the first accolade for the civic centre, which also scooped a RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) South West Award and the RIBA South West Sustainability Award 2015 at the beginning of May.

Youth councillors to visit twin town Two young people will be forging new links when they travel to Keynsham’s twin town Libourne. Iona Tredget and Millie Gregg, both 15, will be joining members of Keynsham and District Twinning Association when they travel to France on June 16. Once there, the girls will be staying with a local teacher and joining the group as they visit the Dordogne, an ornithological park and meet the town’s mayor and councillors at a reception. As part of the itinerary, the girls will also be helping to run a stall at Libourne’s music festival, which will be filled with British food for local people to try. Iona, who along with Millie is a member of Keynsham Youth Council, said: “I found I have really enjoyed being involved with the youth council and decided I would like to be involved in more things in the community. “It will be really nice to

experience a different culture and I hope more young people will get involved in the future.” The Lions Club of Keynsham has donated some money towards the girls’ expenses during the trip and the pair are also undertaking a sponsored cycle ride to Bath to raise more funding. Twinning association president Carole Duckett said: “I’m so pleased we have got young people involved as it’s something I've been working towards for a couple of years now. “To ensure twinning continues into the future, we need younger people to join us.” To sponsor Millie and Iona, email youthworker@keynshamtc.gov.uk. Keynsham has been twinned with Libourne, in South West France, for nearly 40 years. To find out more about twinning in Keynsham, visit www.keynshamtwinning.org.

The trouble with tackling ticks Help, I think I’ve found a tick on my pet! What should I do? There’s nothing like a creepy eight-legged arachnid to ruin a lovely run around in the fields, is there? Your immediate reaction will be to scrape off the unwelcome passenger, but it’s always best to ensure that they are properly removed. So first of all, how do you recognise if your pet has a tick? These little blood-suckers can vary in size depending on age and how much they have fed. They are usually oval-shaped in appearance and can be a variety of colours. If, like most pet owners, you stroke or cuddle your pet on a daily basis, you may first notice what you think is a firm, small lump under their fur. On closer inspection, you will be able to see the tiny legs sticking out as well. They tend to latch on to areas with the least amount of fur, such as the armpit, ears and underbelly. Now to the important part – removing the tick safely. If you are happy to remove a tick yourself, we recommend that you use a “tick-twister”. These claw-shaped picks slot safely between the body and the head of the tick, which you then twist until the head lifts out from under the skin. Please do not try to remove a tick any other way. You’ve probably read or heard of many

other DIY methods – however, please do not be tempted just to “pull” a tick off, burn or singe it away or try to suffocate the tick by covering it in alcohol or Vaseline. It is vital that when removing a tick, the head is completely removed, too. If the head gets left behind under the skin, it can cause infection and result in diseases such as Lyme Disease. If you do accidently leave the head behind, give us a call, as a quick course of antibiotics may need to be prescribed. If you do find a tick and are not confident in removing it, don’t worry, call the surgery and arrange to see one of our veterinary nurses, who will happily remove the tick free of charge for you. What’s more, we are currently taking part in The Big Tick Project to contribute towards important research at the University of Bristol. Speak to Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 9867700 for more information.

Chamber chair aims to show what town can offer Attracting more visitors and rising to the challenge of competition from Keynsham’s neighbouring cities will be among the priorities for the new chair of the town’s Chamber of Commerce. Designer Zoe Wilkins, who has run her furniture design business from Keynsham for the last five years, has been elected to lead the organisation, which brings together businesspeople from across the town. She replaces Lyn Young who resigned in April following a number of years in the role, including throughout the development of the Civic Centre, speaking out for neighbouring traders and the challenges they have faced during this period. Footfall has been a problem in the town for a number of reasons, Zoe said, and added that highlighting what Keynsham can offer will be essential. “Improvements have been implemented by the chamber and its members to encourage more visitors to Keynsham,” she

Keynsham Chamber of Commerce chair Zoe Wilkins said. “We have two wonderful cities close by – Bath and Bristol – which are stiff competition, but Keynsham can offer more independent retailers, a relaxed and compact place to meet, improve your wellbeing, shop, do business, everything. We just need more awareness of all our town has to offer.” Zoe, who moved to Keynsham

20 years ago, says the town has plenty to offer those setting up businesses locally. She said: “Keynsham has fabulous transport links with Bath, Bristol and surrounding areas as well as a compact town centre that is easy to access and has much to offer. It also has beautiful green spaces to relax in, a great sense of community and there is a lot of support from other local businesses, especially via the chamber. “There is a huge array of businesses in Keynsham – retail, office-based, home-based, most of which are independent, some of which are not well-known or are unaware of the opportunities to grow or assist in Keynsham’s growth. “The Chamber of Commerce brings together influential and passionate people in Keynsham’s business sector and a chance of an improved business community.” Find out more about the Chamber of Commerce at www. keynshamchamber.org.uk.

‘Smiling, supportive’ Lesley is named Farm Woman of the Year A woman who took on the running of the family farm after her husband fell ill, plays a key role in her community and is a familiar face at Keynsham Farmers' Market has been celebrated at the Royal Bath & West Show. Lesley Bowes, of Chewton Farm, has been named Farm Woman of the Year after no less than 17 people wrote to the judges to tell them how much of a difference she makes in Chewton Keynsham and beyond. Alongside caring for her husband and tending the farm’s Aberdeen Angus herd, Lesley also mows the grass at Queen Charlton Church and Village Hall, looks after the village green in Burnett and helps many residents in the surrounding villages maintain their gardens. “Lesley is a compassionate, caring, supportive friend to all. If someone is in need or something needs doing, Lesley is the first person to volunteer her help,” one Chewton Keynsham resident wrote, adding: “Chewton Keynsham is proud of its smiling, famous farmer.” On Friday, May 29, Lesley's contribution to farming and the community was recognised when she received a crystal rose bowl as well as a meal for two at Ston Easton Hotel. Joint judge Lady Fellowes, who is president of the Royal Bath & West Society and story editor for Downton Abbey, said: “Lesley is just an extraordinary woman. I was really moved. She is kind, generous, caring and selfless in the community. She and her husband started the farm from scratch and since he

Lesley Bowes, of Chewton Farm, with her award at the Royal Bath & West Show fell ill she has taken on the farm work and personal care. She was described as the heart of the village – I just don’t know how she finds the time.” Lesley, a mother of two, said she was “stunned” when she realised she was the person the judges were describing as they made the presentation at the Bath & West Showground. She said: “I’m very touched. I'm just an ordinary person. I feel that community is very impor-

tant, I’ve been supported by the community and I hope I can give something back by supporting others. “Someone once said about the farm that it’s the hub of the village and lots of villages have lost that. To have industry, albeit small, at the heart of it makes it more of a living village.” She said farming could be a hard way of life but it was “in her blood” and she loved to see people enjoying the countryside as

they walked on the popular route across her farm from Keynsham to Compton Dando. “At weekends there are more people than animals on the farm,” she said. “I feel it’s a privilege and an honour to be able to live and work in the countryside. I feel so lucky to have the farm and to share it as well.” Launched last year, the Farm Woman of the Year Award aims to recognise the often unsung heroines of the farming world.

Reverend Andrew Judge and town council chair Lisa O’Brien next to the memorial bench, left; the ceremony at the new cremated remains area

Bench to honour town’s fallen is blessed in cemetery ceremony A blessing and dedication has been held at Keynsham Cemetery of a commemorative bench to honour and remember those who have given their lives for their country, and to provide visitors with a place for reflection. A blessing also took place of the new cremated remains area in the extension of the cemetery

on Friday, May 29. Reverend Andrew Judge, of Keynsham & Saltford Churches Together, carried out the blessings and town councillors, office staff, representatives from Keynsham Civic Society, Keynsham History Society, Keynsham Heritage Trust and local funeral directors joined in with prayers.

Councillor Lisa O’Brien, chair of the town council, thanked Reverend Judge and all present for attending and and said that the town’s War Memorial lists 80 names of men from Keynsham and Saltford, who died fighting in the Armed Forces. There are at least five whose final resting place is in Keynsham Cemetery.

She said: “Honouring their memory has transcended the generations so this bench offers the opportunity for all to reflect on their sacrifice and the legacy of safety they provided.” Finally, town clerk Jo Swift thanked the groundsmen for their hard work in helping to create the two areas in the cemetery.

Around 110 Perform Dance school members took part in the shows

Young dancers leap from ballet to Bollywood More than 100 dancers took to the stage in Saltford to show off a range of styles from Bollywood to ballet, with jazz, disco, tap and lyrical in between. Members of Perform Dance, a school run by Royal Ballet Upper School and Central Ballet School-trained Lucy Ratnett, put on a fully choreographed and costumed show at Saltford Hall on May 8 and 9. There will be another chance to see the young dancers in action when they entertain guests at Saltford Festival’s Gala Night on June 20. Opal Webber, a parent and volunteer with the dance school,

said: “The ethos of the school is bringing dance to all, making it fun, varied and energetic where every child is a star.” Lucy also works for Stagecoach and The Bristol School of Dancing, as well as running Perform Dance, which puts on at least two shows a year and offers a summer school for four- to 16-year-olds at Saltford Hall. The school is currently looking into acquiring its own premises in the Keynsham area and anyone who would like to find out more about getting involved can call Lucy on 07887 527633 or email lucyratnett dance@live.com.

Mad Science’s Rocket Rachel at work – she is raising funds for Make Some Noise by trekking across the Grand Canyon

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

June, 2015

Make some noise for Mad Science! This year Mad Science are proud to be supporting Global’s Make Some Noise children’s charity. Global’s Make Some Noise helps disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. These youngsters may be affected by illness, disability, bereavement or lack of opportunity. In support of this great cause, Mad Science will be donating 5% of profits from all of our Summer Holiday Camps hosted this summer to the fund. This money will then go towards creating fantastic opportunities for children and young people in the community. Our very own Rocket Rachel will also be tackling a tremendous challenge to raise awareness of the charity’s work by heading on a massive adventure, and trekking across the Grand Canyon!

So by taking part in our action-packed programme of Summer Camps this year you can provide your children with an unforgettable experience, while also making a difference to those less fortunate. We will also be taking additional donations for the charity through our new online booking system. Keep an eye out for the Make Some Noise button on there. We wish Rocket Rachel all the best in her mission and hope that with your help we can make this campaign a real success! You can follow her progress through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter where we will be posting updates on targets, training and the trek itself. Visit www.madsciencebristol. co.uk, Facebook.com/Mad ScienceBristol or @MadSciBristol on Twitter.

Preschool waves leavers farewell and springs into action on the farm! Here We Grow is a very special preschool. Created to support children’s introduction to learning, qualified teaching staff skilfully enable children to move freely through different activities – discovering new interests and skills as they explore, play and make friends. This year, 11 of our children will confidently move forward ready for school. One day the children arrived at Here We Grow to find sheep, pygmy goats, ducks, hens, rabbits and even a couple of alpaca in the outside area. A pop-up farm came to visit! For the whole morning our children were immersed in feeding and cuddling the animals. This activity promoted a sense of responsibility as they learnt to take care of the animals as living creatures. We spring into action! Our theme this term is about growth and enjoying gardening. Learning through fun, socialising

in play, gaining confidence and a sense of responsibility while the plants the children have nurtured grow and flourish. Being involved in the garden is a very physical activity that includes cooperation as each child learns to share tools and work in a team. Children learn reasoning and discovery as they spend time exploring a variety of plants and seeds – digging in the soil, using seeds in collage work and

examining pips in the fruit we prepare for snacks together. They will also be singing songs in a concert about Jack and the Beanstalk. Next term, we are taking part in the Saltford Village Festival. We will have a cake stall at the Old Village Day on Sunday, June 14, and on Tuesday, June 16, we are doing a concert, Rumble in the Jungle, at 11.30am. For Fathers’ Day, we are

inviting dads to come and help make a camp fire to cook our snacks. Here We Grow is a great place to be – energetic, fun and rewarding. We enjoy doing our best for our children – it’s a pleasure to help them learn and grow. Here We Grow caters for children from two to five years old. We still have places available for September, so do contact us.

Black-tie ball and a white wedding Guests who dance the night away at a glamorous black-tie ball at Saltford Golf Club will be raising money for a very worthy cause this summer. Hosted by the club’s captain Brian Wheeler, all proceeds from the event on Saturday, September 12, will go to his chosen charity Children’s Hospice South West. Tickets, which cost £50 each, are available to buy individually or in tables of 10 and include a glass of prosecco on arrival and a four-course meal. A luxury marquee in the club’s grounds will be the venue for dancing to music from live band Gee Baby I Love You. Before the marquee is filled with people in their best evening dress, however, the venue could be hosting another very special event the day before. The golf club and event organisers 11twelve marketing and

event management have decided to offer the marquee to one couple looking for a last-minute wedding reception venue on the afternoon of Friday, September 11. The one-off package will include 100 guests for a drinks reception and three-course wedding breakfast and, when it’s time to head to the dance floor in the luxury marquee, a DJ will be provided. Catering would be provided by Hayward’s Kitchen, who are based at the golf club, including evening food such as hot bacon rolls, with a bar open until midnight. The package is offered for £5,000 with £1,500 going to Children’s Hospice Southwest. For charity ball ticket inquiries or for more information on the wedding package, contact Laura Bevan at laura@11twelve. co.uk.

Could join team of foster carers?

Keynsham people are being invited to find out if they’ve got what it takes to be a foster carer as Bath and North East Somerset Council launches a recruitment drive. There are around 140 children currently in care in Bath and North East Somerset; most are fostered but there are still some children needing carers, particularly teenagers. The council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Michael Evans, said: “Over the past year, the council has seen an increase in requests for foster carers for over-11s; we need more than twice the number of foster homes for the over-11s than for those of primary school age. “Anyone who feels they have something to offer children can apply – foster carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Their common link is a genuine concern for the welfare of children whom they can help by offering to share their lives and home. “There are no age limits and it doesn’t matter whether you’re

17

single, married, or living as a couple.” An information evening is being held on Tuesday, June 9, at the Civic Centre in Keynsham, starting at 6.30pm. There will be an opportunity to listen to foster carers talk about their experiences and find out more about how you could become a carer. Call 01225 394949 for more details and to confirm your attendance. Foster carer Richard Lee said: “Fostering is life changing. The best part is seeing the kids grow up, our oldest is now 51!” Fellow carer Kim Patton said: “There are trials and tribulations, but also huge rewards. The best part of fostering for me is when young people I previously fostered return to our home – it’s like I have an extended family.”

Diamond celebration for an ‘inspirational’ couple Some things are made to last – and a couple who have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in the same house they moved into in the 1950s would agree. Jean and Vivan Beck, both 83, raised a glass to their 60th wedding anniversary with loved ones at the Dartmouth Walk house where they raised their two children and which has become the hub for the whole family. The couple met at Hengrove Speedway track in 1953, marrying two years later on May 7 at St Anne’s Church in Bristol. “There was no reception, said granddaughter Lara. “Just a drink with their parents at Nan’s house and they caught the train to London the same day for their week-long honeymoon. The couple then lived with Vivian’s mother before moving into their current house in 1958, watching the town grow over the decades. Vivian said: “It’s not the same feel as 50 years ago with the nice, private shops but the people are still the same and we love the sense of community in the town. Today, the couple enjoy shopping together, fortnightly trips to Weston-super-Mare for fish and chips and spending time with their children, four grandchildren and greatgranddaughter, with the whole family often meeting up at their Keynsham home. And the secret to a long marriage? Tolerance, to always keep plodding along and a good bicker everyday to clear

Jean and Vivian Beck toast their diamond wedding anniversary, above; the couple on their wedding day in 1955, right things up, they agree. And it helps to always say “yes, adds Vivan. Lara added: “They are as happy now as they have ever been and are the core of our family. We all think they are an inspiration. The family also enjoyed a celebration at the Old Manor House to mark the anniversary.

It’s hard to believe we are in June. It seems like only days ago that some of us were enjoying a few days off at Christmas with family or friends. Now as the weather appears to improve (fingers crossed – I don’t want to jinx anything) we have a significant number of great events to look forward to. These include Pittfest (the festival at Stothert and Pitt in the village of Corston on June 6 and 7), Keynsham Music Festival beginning at the end of the month and several village fetes as well. My first experience of most of these events was last year and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to see some of the sights and sounds the area has to offer. Planning for some of these events has begun and I hope

with Sergeant Will Stephens

We hope to help focus minds on the vulnerability of cyclists on roads and the need for both cyclists and motorists to behave safely and courteously to one another

to be able to attend as many of them as I can. As we all know, anti-social behaviour (ASB) often worsens over the spring and summer months. Our aim is and has always been to nip these issues in the bud at an early stage. We will be paying particular attention to the Keynsham Memorial Park, the Community Woodland on Manor Road and Temple Street car park

and council office areas. Please continue to let us know of any ASB you might be encountering, however big or small. Not only is ASB a significant issue force-wide but I take it very seriously locally as well. This is because I feel ASB has the potential to ruin people’s lives – something I want to avoid as far as possible. In the Keynsham area we are also facilitating a roll-out for the

THE UPTON INN

Safer Cycling campaign; please look out for more information in the coming weeks. The aim of this campaign, which came about through a comment from a member of the public at a Connecting Communities Forum held by B&NES Council, is to raise awareness among the numerous keen cyclists using Keynsham and the Chew Valley for cycling events, races and for recreation. We hope to help focus minds on the vulnerability of cyclists on roads and the need for both cyclists and motorists to behave safely and courteously to one another. Please everyone, be careful on the roads and look out for those cyclists and motorcyclists. Motorcyclists can be very hard to spot and are easy to miss. Please take care.

Full details at keynsham musicfestival.co.uk.

With musical events every night of the week in the run-up to Keynsham Music Festival on July 5, there’s no denying the event has grown hugely in recent years. The biggest development this year will be Saturday afternoon and evening in the park, which will be full of activity and entertainment – introducing Keynsham’s first Folk Festival! A procession of classic and vintage cars around the High Street and into the park will kick off proceedings on July 4. Morris and folk dancing will take place throughout the afternoon in Market Walk and in the park, with local and international dance troupes, including Somerset Morris, Mr Wilkins Shilling and Kopenicker Folkloretanzgruppe from Berlin. The stage in the Performance Tent will welcome some wellknown local performers as well as up-and-coming acts from 2pm until late into the evening as the debut folk festival gets under way. The line-up includes Bath's Inu, The Honeyfire, Helen James and Paul Barclay, Cindy Stratton and more. All-day tickets are available from Keynsham Town Council's offices at 15-17 Temple Street. At 7pm, the now-traditional Gala Concert with Keynsham Orchestra will begin on the Top Stage. So with so much going on on the Saturday, it should be a good warm-up for the Sunday when more than 40 acts take to the four stages in the Memorial Park, including BigTopp, The Funkinsteins, Natalie Holmes and Foreign Affairs. Visit keynshammusicfestival. co.uk for full details.

of those involved. The film premiere will be at the choir performance on July 1. The choir will sing a programme of familiar popular songs together with some entirely original songs created by Charlie, Trisha Williams and the choir.  Tickets £5 from Keynsham Town Council, 15-17, Temple Street, Keynsham

Following on from international speakers, Satish Kumar (2013) and Alastair McIntosh (2014), Live Simply brings another great speaker to the Friday evening Music Festival slot, writes a Keynsham Action Network spokesman. Adam Lent is European director for research and Innovation at Ashoka, the premier global network of social entrepreneurs. Adam says: “Listen to the politicians and you’d think that the solution to our many challenges rests either with big government or big business or both. We are asked to put our faith in ministers and chief executives to take the right decisions to keep us in work, protect our living standards and stop the environment crumbling.” He argues: “Instead we need a totally new approach that unleashes the creativity, entrepreneurialism and wisdom of millions if we are to meet our biggest challenges. That means spreading political, economic and cultural power far more widely across the population. Going back, in fact, to the ‘small power’ visionaries of the 18th and 19th centuries before we became so obsessed with ‘big power’ in the 20th.”  Tickets £6.50 from Keynsham Town Council, 15-17 Temple Street or www.livesimply.co.uk

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham Eating meat is an important part of who we are. How many of us will order steak and chips at a celebratory meal? Or sit down to a full roast on Sunday? Eating meat is often associated with living a better life, which is why many millions more people globally are eating meat than a decade ago. Meat in moderation is good for us – it contains important vitamins and minerals. But too much can be unhealthy, and has a massive impact on the planet. Monday, June 15, is World Meat Free Day. The organisers want 10 million people to give up meat for just one day. They say that with an estimated 9 billion people to feed by 2050, our planet won’t be able to cope with the resulting increased demand for meat. Raising animals for meat

produces huge amounts of greenhouse gases, which are the main culprit in climate change. It takes around 7,000 litres of water to produce just 100g of beef. More land is used to grow animal feed than to grow food directly, contributing to the

one million people going to bed hungry at night. Another million people are suffering from heart disease and high blood pressure, which are associated with a diet rich in animal fats. If 10 million people swap

the meat in one meal for a plant-based protein on World Meat Free Day the impact will be huge: a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions; 48 tonnes less of of saturated fat consumed; and 13 million tonnes of water saved. If 10 million people regularly swap their meat for veg – once a week for example – the positive impact on our health, and the planet’s, would be amazing. Transition Keynsham has pledged to support World Meat Free Day. Will you? Visit www. worldmeatfreeday.com for more details. In other news, the Wombles are looking for volunteers to help out at the Keynsham Music Festival on July 4 and 5. Please email womble@ transitionkeynsham.org for more information.

Town centre roadworks Letter to lose ‘due to finish this month’ Saddened co-ordinator role Concerns that Keynsham has become the “roadworks capital of the world” are understandable, says a local councillor who has spoken out to “put residents in the picture” over the ongoing work around the Civic Centre. Councillor Alan Hale said he knew the work, which has involved temporary traffic lights, narrowed lanes for traffic and road closures over the previous months, has been frustrating for residents, traders and motorists. The most recent phase, in which contractors have been working on a loading bay on Temple Street, prompted some queries as to why the newlycreated space was being altered already. But Mr Hale said the work was a “positive result” that would create space for a crossing to be installed across Temple Street between Rock Road and Bath Hill, which residents and councillors had been calling for. He said: “The initial loading bay was properly designed to carry the weight of delivery

Cllr Alan Hale at the site of the planned Temple Street crossing vehicles, including visits from the odd artic. The reason it has been undergoing further work was to extend its length towards the One-Stop Shop so that a length could be taken off of the other end to provide sufficient pavement for the new crossing to be put in place. “For me, and Councillors Gerrish and Simmonds, this was a positive result because otherwise there would have been no light-controlled crossing for the safety of those accessing the new buildings. We have been working

to achieve this since I first raised the issue back in September. “The loading bay has also received a top coat of Tarmacadam to more readily identify it as somewhere where you might encounter a vehicle.” Temporary lights will soon move to the proposed spot for the new crossing in Temple Street while a consultation is carried out before it is made permanent. Mr Hale says he has also asked that bollards are placed around kerb edges at the development. “Any snagging work that needs to be done will be done, as the three of us [councillors] continue to meet with project officers to ensure we get things right for the town,” he said. “All of this work is programmed to be completed by the end of June and I venture to believe that that will be the case. “Regarding the additional cost, I would imagine that this would be met from the contingency budget within the development cost.”

I have been informed by Keynsham Police that my name as a co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch was taken off the list in Keynsham. I was shocked and felt sad about this as I have always done my best, and went that extra mile for my neighbours. I was NHW co-ordinator for Lays Drive, Caroline Close, Glebe Walk and Charlton Road, a total of 185 houses, since January 2009. I have informed another co-ordinator and said I was willing to hand over any of my details. Well, whoever takes over this volunteer job, I wish them all the very best. Also a big thank you to neighbours and Keynsham Police etc. As I have not been very well, and am now disabled, I have thought it through. As my health comes first, and my family also comes first, so I now understand. Bob Eastaugh

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects many people and causes great discomfort. It can affect both men and women but is more common in women. IBS is where part of the large intestine or colon becomes irritated and sensitive. The symptoms of IBS can vary from person to person but commonly consist of constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, flatulence and bloating. For most people the condition flares up and can last for a few days. Usually the condition may improve but will not disappear completely. Other less common symptoms some people may experience are back pain, tiredness and feeling sick. The cause of IBS is unknown, however it is thought that it is

People usually find that certain foods affect their condition and can cause it to flare up, however these foods vary from person to person but can be fatty or processed foods and drinks containing caffeine or alcohol. finding that you are suffering from diarrhoea and more fibre and more fluids if you have constipation. If you think that you may be suffering from IBS then you should speak to your doctor. If you have been diagnosed by your doctor there are medicines which can help with the symptoms, both on prescription and available over the counter to buy. For example:  Colpermin (peppermint oil capsules), which helps disperse trapped wind and ease bloating.  Colofac IBS (mebeverine), which will help with the cramping pains and wind associated with irritable bowel syndrome.  Buscopan IBS relief (hyoscine butylbromide), which will also help with the abdominal cramps and easing the spasms.  Loperamide, which will help stop diarrhoea.  For constipation there are

many products on the market which will help but one commonly recommended product is lactulose liquid as it is quite gentle, although there may be a product which is more suited to you. Speak to your pharmacist if you would like any information on treatment for any of the symptoms. While these medicines are available to buy in a pharmacy and will help with the symptoms, they should only be taken if you have been diagnosed by a doctor as there is a risk they could simply mask the symptoms of a different underlying condition and delay proper treatment of that condition. For more information about irritable bowel syndrome, you can visit www.theibsnetwork. org, which will give you more information about the condition.

Plaque honour for bellringer Mervyn by Ros Anstey A man who has kept the bells ringing at St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando has had a plaque unveiled in his honour. Mervyn Cox learned his art around 60 years ago at St John’s in Keynsham after spotting an advert for bellringers at the church. He became church organist at St Mary’s, just as the bellringing team there was reaching retirement and when tower master Cecil Mogford retired, the bells fell silent. Churchwarden David Brunskill said: “Always a man to step into a breach, Mervyn set about building up a new team, and has remained in charge ever since. “Not content with these jobs, Mervyn has served St Mary’s through the years as churchwarden, by cutting the churchyard grass, polishing the brass, supporting the Mother’s Union and running a junior choir.” He added: “It was in recogni-

Passion for music becomes business Keynsham residents are being urged to hunt out the hidden gems in their record collections and turn them into cash. James Reid-Sinclair has turned his passion for music into a business, selling rare and collectible records, from Fifties rock ‘n’ roll, The Beatles and classic Seventies rock to indie, reggae, folk, psychedelic and punk rock. James, who works from home in Bristol, said: “I kept thinking about how I might earn a living from something I was interested in.

“All my life I’ve collected vinyl and been crazy about music, so it seemed to make sense to go into business buying and selling records.” He has been contacted by people with collections ranging from half a dozen records to thousands of LPs and will travel to the owner’s home if a collection sounds promising. Anyone over 55 is invited to join a weekly tai chi class launched by Age UK in Keynsham. The hour-long sessions led by a qualified instructor are held every Tuesday at 2.15pm at Victoria Methodist Church Hall. The ancient Chinese martial art is believed to help people improve their balance and clear their minds. One person who joined the class said: “It’s made me more confident in approaching older age and retirement. It is impor-

tant to keep the body moving and tai chi does this in a way that is not strenuous, but is calm and controlled.” Age UK B&NES has also launched a new book club for over-55s starting on June 30 at the library from 10am to around noon, with refreshments available from the cafe. Club’s thanks for supporting concert A charity concert hosted by the Rotary Club of Keynsham has raised £1,800 for the Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Campaign and other Rotary causes. The event, at St John’s Church in Keynsham, saw City Sound and Keynsham’s own ChoirJam take to the stage on May 9 to perform a wide range of songs. More than 300 people

attended the concert, which organisers say proved to be “a great evening’s entertainment”. A club spokesman said: “We thank both choirs for splendid performances, the Coventry Building Society and St John’s parish office for their assistance, also all those who helped us advertise the event and a sincere thank you to all the members of the audience for their loyal support.”

The Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Revd Peter Hancock, fourth from left, outside St John’s Church, which hosted a visitation

Hundreds attend bishop’s service in town church

Keynsham’s St John’s Church welcomed the recently appointed Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Revd Peter Hancock, to lead a service for almost 500 people, writes our correspondent. The High Street church hosted a visitation for clergy, lay, chairs and church wardens from across the diocese on May 11. The service was attended by 479 people, including the Archdeacon of Bath, the Venerable Andy Piggott, who lives in Saltford. During visitations, which are held across the diocese every year, formal declarations are made and church wardens take up office and become bishop’s officers. They have legal responsibility for their church building and a pastoral role to ensure their church is open, welcoming and involved in the community.

In his address, Bishop Hancock said: “As your bishop, I want you to know that I am committed to standing alongside and supporting the different challenges that you face in your communities.” The bishop’s closing remarks included an encouragement to the clergy present to take their church wardens to the pub afterwards and buy them all a drink in recognition of the many hours freely given to upholding the church in their community.

Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group Almost 30 boarded the Diala-Ride bus to take us to Folly Farm near Pensford. There were two options available, a short three-mile walk, or a longer seven-mile trek around this working Avon Wildlife Trust farm. Although the weather was overcast it didn’t deter our sociable band of walkers. Nature was at her spring-like best, with the ground covered in a carpet of colourful wild flowers. Even a roe deer put in an appearance. We stopped on top of North Hill for a picnic, with panoramic views across Chew Valley Lake and the picturesque Somerset countryside. A thoroughly good time was had by all. Our thanks go to Mike Stone for organising and leading the walk For our next walk, we are trying something different with

Complementing your natural beauty

The Cosmetic Studio Keynsham offers individually tailored non-surgical treatments, including wrinkle relaxing injections (using Botullinum toxin), rejuvenating skin peels, dermaroller treatments and dermal fillers. Consultations and treatments are all performed by Doctor Amy Gately MBChB MRCP. About Doctor Gately I have a wealth of experience across many medical specialties. I am passionate about helping people complement their natural beauty and work with my clients to understand their requirements, creating an individually tailored treatment plan. The Cosmetic Studio can offer a range of non-surgical cosmetic procedures tailored to your needs – ranging from wrinkle relaxing treatments to improving the overall quality of your skin by reducing scarring and blemishes. I can also provide group

demonstrations and treatments by prior arrangement – please contact me for further details. Wrinkle relaxation with Botulinum A toxin injections act to reduce the muscular contraction that produces wrinkles. The three common areas to treat are: crow’s feet, Glabellar region (between the brows) and forehead lines. Dermaroller is a microneedling procedure producing multiple fine puncture wounds. This microscopic level injury stimulates growth factors and boosts collagen production. It has a wide range of uses, including hyper-pigmentation, acne scarring, stretch marks and the reduction of fine lines.

Local anaesthetic cream is applied for 20 minutes and the procedure is completed in 15 minutes. You will experience a uniform redness of the treated area, similar to sunburn, which will settle over 2-3 days. Some discomfort may be present initially, but the results are outstanding. Skin peel treatments have a history that is longer than you may imagine. Even Cleopatra bathed in sour milk containing lactic acid, a component of our modern-day skin peels. Superficial peels using glycolic acid penetrate the upper skin layer, weakening the bonds between dead skin cells and

revealing fresh, youthful skin beneath. This can improve areas of acne, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and improve the overall quality of your skin. Treatments can be given weekly and overall 6-12 treatments may be required dependent on the condition. 2015 Prices  Wrinkle relaxation treatments From £170  Dermaroller £190 each treatment or a course of three for £500  Skin Peel £60 each treatment or a course of six for £300  Dermal Filler From £190

Guild members celebrate group’s 25th anniversary Five founding members have helped mark St Keyna Townswomen’s Guild’s 25th anniversary. Women from the group celebrated the occasion at their Members’ Day at Keynsham’s Fear Hall in May, where they enjoyed a ploughman’s lunch and displays on the various activities members are involved in. The founder members spoke to the group about how the guild was formed, the friends they had made and the places they had visited over the years as a result. “It was a really lovely way to commemorate this milestone,” said one member of the group. Guild members also carry out fundraising and hand over a donation to a nominated charity each year and have chosen to support Sophia’s Dream to Walk. Cycle track day to help cancer fight People of all ages are being invited to get on their bikes at a cycling fun day to help local fundraisers support the fight against prostate cancer. The Rotary Club of Keynsham is welcoming families, individuals and groups to join the event at the Odd Down Sports Ground Cycle Track in Bath on Sunday, June 21, for an afternoon of activities and entertainment. Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Keynsham Body Works – any memories?

Recently, we were contacted by Mike Fenton, who lives in Yorkshire and is researching companies that made bus and coach bodies in very small numbers. The picture shows a Bedford coach with a replacement body built by Keynsham Body Works in about 1949. The business was at 44 Temple Street, where Farrells is today, and this may be the only such vehicle they ever built. The society is always keen to discover more about past businesses and industries in the area, so if you know anything about the company or anyone who worked for them about that

time, please contact Richard Dyson on 0117 9864453 or at richard.dyson@tiscali.co.uk and he will pass the information onto Mike.

A visit to Charterhouse One Saturday last month, a group of members spent a breezy afternoon at Charterhouse, on the top of Mendip, for a guided tour of the archaeological remains in the area. After starting at St Hugh’s Church, which stands as an isolated relic of a once-thriving community, archaeologist and teacher Rachel Shaw took the group around the overgrown remains of the lead workings from various periods of history. The outline of the fort built by the Roman army soon after they invaded – and began to exploit the lead reserves – can still be seen, but most of the

mining remains have been reworked by later generations so that only the Victorian ones are widespread. Large lumps of slag show the shape of the wagons that they were tipped from while still hot and piles of glassy fragments can be found. The only structures clearly visible are the horizontal flues, where lead fumes were condensed and the solid residue was scraped off by child workers. It’s a fascinating area, with many tales to tell.

Public guided walk – Keynsham History

As part of the society’s 50th anniversary programme, we will be running a guided walk around central Keynsham highlighting historical remains and features of interest. All are welcome and there is no charge. Meet at Bath Hill East car park at 2.30pm on Sunday, June 28.

A chance to visit the Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum in London is showing a range of exhibitions on the major conflicts of 20th century but their First World War Galleries, which opened last summer with a lot of media coverage, are probably the star attraction. There is also a major exhibition on the Holocaust and several smaller ones on other aspects of the Second World War. The society has arranged a coach trip to the IWM on Saturday, August 8, and places are available to non-members. The coach will start from Keynsham so if you want to see any of these attractions without the hassle of public transport, contact Roger Sirett for details and a booking form. He can be reached by email at rogersirett@tiscali.co.uk or by phone on 01761 471188.

www.goodgroundsandgardens.co.uk 07923 447362 info@goodgroundsandgardens.co.uk Truly Bespoke Is it necessary for a design business such as Truly Bespoke to have a showroom? Zoe, the business owner, thinks not. She has taken the decision to concentrate on home-based consultations. Zoe’s focus is on providing a bespoke service. Not just unusual styles or sizes of unit but design solutions that suit her clients perfectly. In order to provide this service Zoe needs to be able to visit a client’s home, and oversee installation to ensure her vision is installed correctly. For this reason, Zoe now arranges consultations by appointment only and is in the process of converting her beloved camper-van into a mobile showroom/office when required. “Being bespoke it would be impossible to demonstrate every possible furniture style in a showroom. I can better gauge my clients’ personal and life styles by visiting their home,” she said. Zoe can bring samples and her extensive portfolio of “real” projects to you. She also has a network of clients locally, willing

to show the rooms she installed, so you can see her furniture in a working situation (and speak to those clients about their experience), so is it a positive move? She certainly thinks so and her clients would agree as Zoe can dedicate more time to each project and ensure it is faultless. Do not hesitate to call Zoe if you require a kitchen, bedroom or bathroom and invite her to inspire you in the comfort of your own home (or Ziggy, her camper-van if you are building your home!).

In the Garden Several years ago, I remember writing about a competition for head gardeners at public gardens and private estates. The purpose was to complete a pattern when mowing the lawns. It inspired me to try on my own lawn. The result was poor, to say the least. The lawn was too small and my mower was not efficient enough. But having cut the grass, I could see a pattern appearing. The sun was low so a shadow could be seen along the line of the cut. It was obvious that the mower was not set to cut level. One side was higher and presented a sort of valley and, having cut the grass diagonally, I was quite pleased

with the effect. But I think the competition is still beyond me. The last five or six years I have been working on a small piece of ground, poor quality, to turn it into a small meadow area. No feeding to be done and cut only twice a year, it seemed to be an ideal thing to have. It progressed slowly with the addition of some spare blue bells, cowslips, primroses and buttercups. I felt I was getting nowhere until recently I read

about meadows in Dr Hessayon’s book The Lawn Expert, and realised that I was doing quite well, and rolling the correct procedure. So now I feel pleased with my small meadow, until I come to cut it! Could gardening be considered a paradox? I ask after the 10th day of sweeping blossom fallen from the wisteria. The shrub has given a quite splendid display over the past four weeks. I remember several callers men-

33

tioning it and I basked in reflected glory. And then came the clearing of the fallen blossom, and the pleasure of its display faded a little. So if a paradox is two opposites, perhaps I am correct. The month of June is both bountiful and busy. The blossom of various plants gives a rainbow of colours. There are bright red poppies, large-headed peonies, roses both yellow and red, and the multi-coloured chameleon on display. But what needs to be done? Rhododendrons and camellias need cutting back to keep them in their allotted space, then water and mulch them. Once again check all supports for the crocosmias, delphiniums and perhaps the autumn asters. Check for lily beetles, scarlet in colour on the underside of the leaves. Any climbing plants, tie back to their supports. Clip box so that it keeps a good shape, and prune early summer shrubs, such as philadelphus and lilac. Snip off dead heads of aquilegia, poppies, and hellebores and pulmonarias. Then you’ll have a good tidy garden to boast about.

On the Plot May has been unseasonably cold (especially at night) and dry so your plants may have suffered because of this. Thankfully, the rain has arrived and the forecast for June is promising, so this will help plants recover and promote some healthy growth. However, if dry weather returns you will still need to water regularly to allow the plants to continue to grow healthily. By now, most if not all of this year’s tender vegetables should be planted but still keep an eye on them in case of slug or snail damage until they become established. Avoid slug pellets unless they are safe for pets

and other wildlife and try other ways to control them. Beer traps work and can be bought in most gardening outlets – and you can use milk if you don’t like wasting beer. This method works by attracting the slugs and snails into the trap where they “drown in the beer. Try sprinkling oats around the plants as this swells inside the pest after being eaten. Remember to provide the young brassica plants with some net protection to stop the

pigeons stripping them bare. If you are growing brassicas for winter cropping it is still possible to sow seeds now and transplant as soon as they are large enough to handle, but make sure you use the right seed variety so that they are winter hardy. Don’t ignore your plot for more than a few days as the weeds will grow like crazy at this time of year and the slugs seem to ignore them. There is no easy answer to controlling weeds

35

but it is an essential chore. Hoe regularly on dry days so that the seedlings die on the soil surface. In some cases, you need to get down on your knees and remove them by hand with the help of a trowel and make sure you remove them before they flower and set seed. This month should see continued cropping of asparagus as well as broad beans, one of the few vegetables that freeze well. Pinch out the tops of broad beans when they flower to discourage black fly. Continue to repeat sow carrots, salad vegetables, peas and spinach this month so that you get an uninterrupted supply and it’s not too late to sow swede and turnips for an autumn or winter crop. Prepare an area to plant leek plants, which should be ready for planting in July. If you have the space, plant some flowers that attract the bees so they can pollinate your crops as well. Again, this year the expectation is that fruit crops will be good but they won’t do that without the essential help of bees.

Up with the larks – and the rest with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group Dawn Chorus Twenty-five AWT members and guests gathered at 4.30am in The Shallows cark park on a cold but dry morning. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Dave Sage, we made our way onto the cycle path for the annual Dawn Chorus. From the bridge near The Bird In Hand we had to wait till 4.55am for the first bird to break the silence. The moorhen was swiftly followed by the robin, skylark and tawny owl. With pheasant, carrion crow and blackbird, the volume increased greatly as the birds sang to reclaim their territorial rights as well as letting the females know that they are most welcome. Some birdsongs are rela-

tively easy to pick up. The great tit is probably one of the easiest to pick up. Its most common song sounds like “TEE-ta or “teacher, though that is one of many. On the walk we were given tips on how to work out certain birdsongs. For example, the pattern of the chaffinch’s song sounds like a fast bowler in cricket running up to bowl the ball. It gathers pace and has a final flourish. However, picking up the differences in tone and pattern can be troublesome. A lot of people could not hear the thin and high-pitched song of the

goldcrest. Also, there was a debate over the possibility of hearing the “tuit tuit of the nuthatch. There were lighter moments, like when event leader Dave Sage celebrated the sound and sight of a willow warbler with a victory jig. It looked like he had scored the winning goal in the Cup Final. The walk had two distinctive halves. The first half was along the cycle path from Saltford towards Bath while the second half was along the bank of the River Avon as we headed back to Saltford. We finished at 7.51am with the greenfinch, the 35th bird on our list. By now it was time to head home for breakfast. Next year the Dawn Chorus will start from the same point as this year but will head in the direction of Bitton Station.

Village celebration that stretches back over the centuries returns by Ros Anstey It’s 440 years since Queen Elizabeth I granted the village of Queen Charlton a charter to hold an annual fair, and the tradition is still going strong today. The public are invited to join villagers on Saturday, June 13, to enjoy the annual fete. In Queen Elizabeth I’s days the fair was held to sell livestock, but now the community organises an afternoon of family fun with a range of attractions. The fun starts at 2pm and goes on until 4.30pm. You can try your hand at skittles or the coconut shy, then relax with a cream tea or glass of local cider, before looking around all the stalls. Keynsham Brass Band and Bristol Morris Men will be joining in to provide entertainment throughout the afternoon, while elsewhere there will be a classic car collection to drool over. For those who like their vehicles to be more hands-on there will be

Crowds at last year’s Queen Charlton Village Fete and moving the vintage bus into position, right a vintage London double-decker bus to admire. Queen Charlton’s famous cream teas will be served in the village hall, while a barbecue serving burgers and hot dogs will be in the main street leading down to the hall. The cider tent will also be busy serving a range of traditionally brewed ciders.

Stalls will include cakes, plants, bric-a-brac, books, bottles and lots more, while side shows and activities will offer a bouncy castle, skittles, a coconut shy and bat the rat. There will even be alpacas to admire, and a raffle, which this year offers a top prize of a brand new iPad.

Parking will be available on the outskirts of the village, keeping the centre of the village traffic-free. Money raised will go towards St Margaret’s Church and the village hall. For further information, call John on 0117 986 5759 or 07976 757290.

Adult Fiction

 The Night Watch – Sarah Waters From the pen of the author who wrote FingerSmith and Tipping the Velvet, also with a recent TV adaption, Sarah Waters has again written an extraordinary tale. Initially four Londoners are introduced: Kay, who wanders the streets endlessly searching; Helen, who harbours a deep secret; Viv, a glamour girl who is loyal to her reckless soldier boyfriend; and finally Duncan, who struggles with demons of his own. The story then switches to the tumultuous days of World War II and the blitz that hit London. All four characters’ lives are intertwined and unravel as the bombs rain down. Sarah Waters has touched the story with great period details from the blackout and wartime dialogue to ARPs and typist pools. A tender, tragic and beautifully poignant story, set against the backdrop of feats of heroism both epic and ordinary.

Adult Non-Fiction In Keynsham Library there are a number of large-print books in Fiction and Non-Fiction. One of these is:  Woman’s Hour, Celebrating Sixty Years of Women’s Lives – foreword by Jenny Murray Woman’s Hour is one of Britain’s finest radio programmess and has been entertaining listeners since October 1946. This book is separated

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library into decades and in each decade a Woman’s Hour presenter selects their favourite guests, which include some extraordinary women. From the 1940s Sue MacGregor offers a range of interviews with the likes of Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Eleanor Roosevelt and one of the first senior policewomen, Barbara de Vitre. From the 1950s we meet Vera Brittain and Claire Rayner; 1960s Cilla Black and Barbara Castle, going right up to the 2000s with Hilary Clinton and Sharon Osbourne. This book highlights some inspiring women, from the celebrity to the ordinary listener, and charts the changing role of women throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

Her extraordinary talents are put to true test when she rallies in defence of her teacher, the sweet Miss Honey, against the diabolical Trunchbull. This is a wonderful story and far from predictable – the big surprise comes when Matilda discovers a new, mysterious talent from her mental abilities and the fun starts from there. A great story and a firm favourite which is brought to life in this audio book.

Young Adult Fiction

 The Vanishing Act – Mette Jakobsen This is the first novel written by the Danish author. The story is about an imaginative girl called Minou. She lives on a snowy, isolated er in island with her father a lighthouse that looks out to sea. Minou’s artistic mother left them a year earlier after walking out into the rain one night and never coming back. All she left behind was a shoe that was washed up on the shore and her memories. Minou explores her island, using her own creative mind to continue her mother’s story and that of an unexpected visitor to the island. Her father chooses to hunt endlessly for truth through logic to solve the mystery. Although the story revolves around Minou and is read through her eyes, the other vivid characters that live on the island

come off the pages and also weave you into their magical dance – the magician, the priest and the dog called No Name. Everything about this book is intriguing and we get swept along with Minou as she learns how to cope with loss, love and truth. It is a uniquely enchanting story and well worth a read. £500 award for community centre

Thought for the Month with Stephen M’Caw, Team Rector of Keynsham Parish

Something to remember as we jingle our coins Did you know it is an offence to deface the banknotes and coins in our pockets? Whereas it is not illegal to deliberately destroy a banknote it is an offence to deface a banknote by printing, stamping or writing on it, under the Currency and Banknotes Act 1928. So apparently burning bank notes is allowed! More to the point, since we are talking about coins, the Coinage Act of 1971 also makes it an offence to destroy a metal coin that has been current in the UK since 1969. So that means turning pennies into washers by drilling holes in them is not allowed! GK Chesterton, author of

the Father Brown detective stories, makes a brilliant point about people. He says: “People are equal in the same way pennies are equal. Some are bright, others are dull; some are worn smooth, others are sharp and fresh. But all are equal in value for each bears the image of the sovereign; each person bears the image of the King of Kings (i.e. God).” That each £1 coin is of equal value – regardless of its shininess, age, dents and wear is so obvious that it goes without saying. That this applies equally to people is also just as obvious, but we need sometimes to have our memory jogged on the matter.

The wave of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, fleeing the troubles of Africa, Syria and the wider Middle East is no easy situation for the EU to deal with, any more than the whole issue of immigration is for the UK as a nation. However that each migrant is of significance and not to be defaced (that is have their human face, with its unique features and precious tears, ignored) is something to remind each other of frequently… perhaps as frequently as each time we use a £1 coin. For we are all “coins” of equal worth jingled in the wallet of history and bearing the stamp of the divine.

A Keynsham community centre has been named the winner of a £500 award from a developer. Community@67 has been handed the sum by Taylor Wimpey in the firm’s Community Chest initiative. The centre, in Queens Road, was chosen from a number of nominees by a panel of judges. Clare Hudson, chair of Community@67, said: “It’s fantastic for us to receive such a donation. Two of our volunteers, Margaret Davis and Lorna Carwardine, nominated us for the prize and we’re delighted to have been chosen.” The money will go towards improving kitchen facilities at the centre. Charlie Joseph, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Bristol, said: “Our Community Chest initiative generated a lot of interest locally and we’re absolutely delighted to name Community@67 as the beneficiary of the funding. The centre provides essential services to local people seeking advice, information or training, and we hope the volunteers enjoy using their new kitchen facilities.”

Textile art to bring touch of colour with exhibition An award-winning artist living in Saltford is preparing for her first solo exhibition in the West Country after moving from Brighton. Juanita Buchan will be displaying her vibrant textile and fine art pieces in Bath from the end of next month when she opens her show A Thread of Colour in the city’s Central Library. Teaching herself to sew by making her own clothes and later joining a City and Guilds course, Juanita has developed a technique of embroidering silk paintings of still lifes and portraits by hand and with machine, winning a range of accolades. Last year she was named Overall Champion at the National Quilt Championships in Surrey after entering a thread portrait of her daughters, Shared Jeans, in the contest. She also took home four other awards from the event.

Appeal for films that reveal communities’ lives during war An appeal has been made for film footage of Keynsham and the surrounding area during the First World War. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s arts development team is hoping to locate rare film from the period to include on its website to mark the centenary of the Great War. So far, 16 films from the Bath and North East Somerset district have been located in the collections of PathĂŠ and the British Film Institute, showing occasions such as the visit of the King and Queen to Bath in November 1917, the “roll of honourâ€? at Chew Magna, where every man

I heard that there are shops around in which each item cost a pound, more to the point, did you decide at any time to go inside and have to dodge the staff in black who rush to and fro, front to back, always busy, must pace themselves like swarming ants to stack the shelves. All very young, quick on their feet, so impress people on the street to put aside their “Waitrose Pride, forget the neighbours, step inside. Though I have been inside to see this well controlled efficiency, I wonder as all shoppers should, is the quality as good? As we import goods from China there is a chance it is finer!

A military parade in Bath in 1914 eligible to fight signed up, and a three-day Red Cross Fair held in Sydney Gardens in 1917. Footage from the period is rare and most was officially commissioned and censored by government agencies. Some

people would have owned their own cine cameras, however, and this amateur footage could be a valuable resource. Anyone who knows of film from 1914-18 featuring the district can contact the arts development team on 01225 396138 or email centenary_worldwar1@ bathnes.gov.uk. All of the 1914-1918 films found will be listed on the council’s World War One Centenary website, www.bathnes.gov.uk/ WW1centenary, which lists First World War commemorative events taking place. Where possible, links to online clips will be included.

Business of the month

For June, we meet the Green Fingers team Tell us about your company. Established over 20 years ago, we started as a family business which has grown to become a successful local landscaping, gardening and cleaning company run on our core values of quality, honesty, professionalism and friendliness. As a local company, our reputation is everything to us and believe the best approach is to treat everything we do as though it is for our own home. This has always served us well, with the majority of our business we receive through word of mouth. What service do you provide to the people of Keynsham? Green Fingers specialises in garden maintenance and landscaping and cleaning for domestic and commercial properties. You will regularly see our distinctive black vans around the area working on properties, installing new paths and

driveways, gates and fencing. We have our own tree surgery team so if you look up you may see them in a tree! As well as local domestic work, we have experience of managing large commercial contracts. You can expect to receive a high-quality service from us because we know Keynsham and Saltford inside out and understand that all our customers receive a great service every time from Green Fingers. What makes you different from other companies? Our team is large and experienced, so we have many skills, with trained horticulturists, tree surgeons, carpenters, general builders, commercial and domestic cleaners and, above all, pride in our work. We at Green Fingers believe that no job is too big or too small and will tackle any project

you give us with the highest degree of skill. Since we are a local business, we know how important it is to deliver a highquality, professional service that reflects the spirit of the community. With this in mind, we also take pride in our appearance – you won’t see any dirty vans that belong to us! What are your plans for the future of the business? We feel very optimistic about the future. We have a good order book and have recently won a number of new contracts, such as Saltford Community Hall’s annual cleaning, which we were delighted to win, and can expect to carry on steadily growing. We are really focusing on building on our current clients and work in Saltford and Keynsham by expanding our team and want to say a big thank you to our customers for their support over the years.

Green Fingers directors Gary, Kirstie and Kevin We plan to expand our team even further so that we can deliver our high-quality service to more people and businesses within the Keynsham and Saltford community. Make yourself at home – new estate agents unveil office with difference A Keynsham business has found its perfect home – and now will be helping other people do the same. Matt Gregory, of Gregorys Estate Agents, opened the doors to his new premises at Market Walk last month and will hold an official opening on Friday, June 5, when people are invited to come and take a look inside. “Our shop has been designed to stand out from the norm and we have proudly created a welcoming kitchen-style setting for clients to feel relaxed in when visiting us, said Matt. “The look of our shop is one that you will not find in any other estate agent in the High Street. Matt has worked in estate agency for 15 years, rising to the role of director at a Bristol firm before launching his own business in his hometown. He said: “Gregorys is a familyrun, local, independent estate

agency with myself heading up the business and family members in support roles alongside me. This reason alone makes us different from other estate agents, as I not only work in Keynsham but I live here too, with my wife and two generations of her family having lived here. I therefore

bring a wealth of local knowledge along with my years of estate agency experience. “The ethos of the business is simply to provide local people with a personal, honest and reliable service, and to establish the business in the local community through sponsorship and being

City to kickstart pre-season prep by taking on ‘Toolstation’s finest’ It will be an “honour” to take on Bristol City, says Keynsham Town FC’s manager, as the Robins prepare for their 2015/16 Championship campaign in a pre-season game next month. The League One champions and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy winners will play Western League sides Keynsham Town and Brislington at Brislington Stadium in Ironmould Lane on Sunday, July 5, as part of the club’s support for local sides. Each of the non-league sides will play 45 minutes against the Robins, who are celebrating being back in the English second tier after an absence of two seasons. And Brislington and Keynsham officials will be hoping the game, which kicks off at 1pm, attracts the same level of support as previous City community matches at Ashton & Backwell United in 2013 and Portishead

Keynsham’s Ashley Wintle in action against Corsham Town during the 2014/15 season last year. Keynsham chairman Malcolm Trainer said: “Everyone at the club is really excited to have been chosen to co-host this year’s community friendly. Both Brislington and ourselves are renowned for our hospitality and it will be an honour to take on the League One champions. Hopefully City will go on to have a successful season in the Sky Bet Championship – after they have

been beaten by the Toolstation League’s finest, though!” City manager Steve Cotterill, who is currently devising a detailed pre-season programme for his squad, said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed last year’s game at Portishead, with a fantastic turnout of supporters, young and old. I’m sure this year’s match will be equally popular.” Entry prices for the game have been set at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions, with all profits from the fixture being shared between the two local clubs and City’s Community Trust. Community Trust director Amy Kington said: “Our role within the greater Bristol area is to use the power of football and other sporting activities to improve the lives of people through participation in sport, exercise and education. “We recognise the positive role that the club can play within

the community and we want this fixture against Brislington and Keynsham to help both clubs attract more players, spectators, coaches and administrators. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Keith Burt (director of football), the manager and players for supporting this charitable event. I am confident that this will be a fun and enjoyable day for all.” Brislington chairman Phil Rex added: “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our club by co-hosting this year’s community friendly. We look forward to welcoming the newly-crowned League One champions and hope some of their success rubs off on our players and our club in the season that follows.” The Ks have also arranged pre-season friendlies away to Fry Club FC, on Saturday, July 25, and at home to Hallen on Tuesday, July 28.

Plenty to celebrate, but all eyes at Fry Club FC are on the next steps Fry Club FC’s First Team are riding high after last season, with just work to complete their new pitch and club facilities standing between them and promotion. There were celebrations last month as the team triumphed over Watchet Town in the Somerset Senior Cup final, claiming a 3-2 victory at Taunton Town FC’s ground. Under manager Rob Mallett, the team finished second in the league’s Premier Division following a six-month, 18-match unbeaten league run that included 15 victories, with sights now set firmly on claiming the promotion to the Toolstation Western League Division 1 they so narrowly missed this year. Club chairman Kevin Saunders said: “The new building is progressing and is more or less finished with a view to us transferring over in June. The pitch won’t be ready until the end of October but is progressing well and the floodlights are in. It will allow us next season to apply for Toolstation Western League

Fry Club FC’s First Team after their Somerset Senior Cup win over Watchet Town status, which we narrowly failed to achieve this season as the new facilities were not available. “We did finish runner-up for Toolstation, an improvement on last season when we finished fourth. We’ve had a very successful Somerset Senior Cup run, getting to the final and winning in a very exciting game.” With a change in management halfway through the season, the Reserves faced a tough battle in Somerset County League Division 2 East. Ryan Milton, who took over as manager with Graham Hunter assisting at the end of last year, said: “It was around Christmas

motaman

time and when we took over we were staring down the barrel of relegation. We struggled for a few weeks and went on to get some really good results, digging the team out of potentially a very big hole. We beat some good teams on the way, drawn from the top four. We ended up winning and drawing in seven or eight games as we came into our own. We’ve built a team of young lads along with some older heads and gave a good account of ourselves. We are tenth but well clear of relegation with a big points gap.” Graham, who will manage the team, with Ryan becoming assistant manager over the next

season, said: “We will bring on young players and push on towards promotion for next season, building on confidence from last season.” A radical change in approach saw things improve greatly for the A Team in Bristol and District League’s second division. Ryan Milton, who played with the team before moving on to manage the Reserves, said: “The season had a mixed start, out of the first seven or eight games we lost more than we won. Manager Sam Murray changed the formation, made some brave changes and in the last six or seven games it was a very successful season. We dug ourselves out and were second place at one point, chasing down the leaders. The team lost some players to the Reserves, but they still had a good end to the season – fifth position is outstanding. “This was Sam’s first full season in management – he’s an ex-Frys player who has come up through the junior section –

Fry Club FC will be moving into their new club facilities this season and the team will be in District Division 1 next season. It’s going to be a hard season as there are some good teams in the league above but Sam still wants to push them on and consolidate.” The B Team will also be moving up this season, joining the Bristol and District League’s third division, and manager Gordy Clark is hoping to get things off to a swift start. He said: “Last season we won

nine out of 24, and drew three. It can take a long time to get going as players come and go and slowly whittle themselves down – then we can start playing. The best result last season would be our 8-2 away win against Bromley Heath as it’s quite a close battle between us. The most satisfying win was against Westerleigh, 2-1, as we normally draw or lose – it was a cracking win for us there.

Follow us on Twitter @keynshamvoice “The aims are to try and get the side to settle down as early as possible, with 14 regular players week in week out that would change our season. We’ll also try our best to finish as high as we can – we have a couple of young players coming through from the junior section and a couple of players back from injury, which will be of great benefit.” Pre-season training begins on June 23 and the club is also looking to recruit players of all ages and abilities across the club, from the junior section, which caters for under-fives to under18s, to the senior teams and old boys’ teams. New recruits will join just as the club is due to get the keys to its new facilities, said chairman Kevin, adding that the club prides itself on a strong focus on promoting from within, with many players and managers having worked their way up through the sections, including First Team manager Rob. To find out more about joining the club, or about sponsorship opportunities, contact club secretary Steve Curtis on 07929 746815. Fry Club FC also held their annual presentation evening last month, with one particularly special award. Clubman of

the Year, which is presented to someone connected to the club who has gone above and beyond, was awarded to late former club chairman Alan Taylor’s family in tribute to his dedication to the club. A collection for the British Heart Foundation raised £120 in his memory. The rest of the evening’s awards were: First Team Player of the Year – Matt Brown; Manager’s Player of Year – Chris Dark; Supporters’ Player of the Year – Paul Worlock; County League Young Player of the Year – Kyle Ford Reserves Player of the Year – Lewis George; Manager’s Player of the Year – George Brown A Team Player of the Year – Ben Clapp; Manager’s Player of the Year – Ryan Milton B Team Manager’s Player of the Year – Neil Murphy; Players’ Player of the Year – Ben Charman; Young Bristol and District League Player of the Year – Cameron George

Broadlands U15s become national cup champions after 3-1 victory There have been plenty of celebrations at Reading’s Madejski Stadium but this time it wasn’t the ground’s Championship side in the spotlight. Young footballers from Broadlands Academy scored a decisive win over their rivals Blacon High School to lift the ESFA PlayStation Under 15 Small Schools’ Cup on May 19. The boys were accompanied by parents and carers and more than 100 students and staff, who took on roles such as team physio and mascot as well as cheering them on throughout the game. The first goal was scored within a minute of kick-off by Jack Goddard. Less than ten minutes into the game, Shea Bennington-Mannings scored the second. Jack later followed this up with Broadlands’ third goal, just minutes before the end of the first half. Just over a minute later, a goal was conceded, leaving the score 3-1 at extra time. Broadlands maintained their lead and the score remained until the final whistle. Both of Jack’s goals were nominated for Goal of the Tournament and he received the Man of the Match award. He said: “The whole experience of the day was amazing and to score two screamers at the Madejski and win 3-1 was an incredible feeling. To also get Man of the Match and a free PS4 was a bonus.” The match was broadcast live on the internet and featured immediate replays and expert commentary throughout. Liam Armstrong, captain

Broadlands Academy Under 15s celebrate being national champions at the Madejski Stadium in Reading and goalkeeper, said: “I thought everyone played extremely well, especially after a county cup final loss. We thoroughly deserved every goal we scored. To captain a team at the Madejski and win it was an indescribable feeling. We also had great support from family and friends.” The players were able to use the stadium’s facilities, including hot showers and changing rooms, as used by Championship footballers, and enjoyed a postmatch function attended by the ESFA chairman. John Spring, team manager said: “I am so proud of the boys’ achievements this season and am delighted that they are National Cup champions because it is

exactly what they deserve for all of their hard work, commitment and the positive attitude they display in every game they play. Their performance was excellent and every single player in the team played their part. “They have developed as a team since they came together in Year 7 and many of them play in the same team outside of the academy. I think this is apparent when you watch them play and see how hard they are willing to work for each other. They have improved so much and are determined to be an outstanding footballing team and I think they demonstrated this for everybody watching in the final. “A huge thank you needs to

be given to all their parents/carers who come to every friendly, league game, cup game and often training sessions. They have been so supportive of the team and I appreciate all of their help in making our success possible. I would also like to thank all of the staff and students at Broadlands Academy who demonstrated our outstanding community spirit and have always been supportive of the team. “I look forward to continuing working with the team and am hopeful that they achieve further success in Year 11.” To view the match, visit bit. ly/broadlandsfullmatch or bit. ly/broadlandshighlights for the highlights.

Keynsham Bowling Club recently hosted its first Somerset County match of the season when the President’s Team played against Somerset Indoor Bowls, writes our correspondent. As the County was the host team, Keynsham being the local club had to hand over the green to the County for the afternoon. Our picture shows Keynsham’s secretary Ian Tweedie (second from left) and Barrie Davis to his left with the team captains. Barrie is the chairman of Keynsham and this year is president of Somerset. The 2015 season is now well under way, with the green having been played on for nearly two months. As is normal at the start of a new season a number of friendly matches are played. The ladies have won five of the seven played while the men have won eight from 12. In the North Somerset League the ladies have picked up 18 points from their first three matches. The men compete in the Thursday evening Bristol and District League, where the A Team are top of Division 2 having won all of their five games,

Busy start to season with fun day and county match while the B Team competing in Division 4 have won three of their five games. Three men’s teams have started their Saturday campaign in the North Somerset League, but with only two games played it is a little early to pass judgement. The men successfully defeated BAC by 79 shots to 63 in the Clarence Davey Cup and now await news on their next opponents. Altogether, a sound start to the 2015 season for Keynsham. During the month, the club staged its first internal competition and the Ray Percival Trophy for mixed triples was won by Pam Rose, Dick Ollis and Steve Chivers. On the bank holiday weekend, a day of fun bowls was held, where teams played against each other based on rules not normally associated with Green Bowls. The afternoon enjoyed by all concluded with a barbecue. Keynsham is a thriving bowling club with a super social side as a bonus!
