Houseboats on the Broadmead peninsula in Keynsham

Bid to overturn refusal of marina An appeal has been made against B&NES Council planning chiefs’ rejection of plans for a 326-berth marina off Broadmead Lane in Keynsham. The scheme was turned down by planners in January but a challenge to the decision was lodged at the start of May by agents for the landowner, Enzygo Ltd. Members of the public have until Wednesday, June 8, to submit their comments to the planning inspectorate, before the decision is reviewed by an inspector. Many people living on boats moored at the site objected to the scheme earlier this year, saying they felt they were “invisible” in the developer’s plans and feared losing their homes as the new marina would be purely for leisure purposes and not for residential use. The opposition to the plans remain, one resident told Keynshamvoice following news of the appeal, with flooding at the site and safety on roads surrounding it of particular concern. “Nobody thinks it’s viable as it’s on the flood plain and road access is dangerous enough now. I hope it’s refused for everybody’s sake,” the resident said. Meanwhile, a temporary stop

notice was also served by the council on unauthorised work on a new track near Broadmead Lane in April. Retrospective planning permission for the work has since been applied for by the landowner. The applicant behind the marina has said it would directly create eight full-time jobs and contribute £300,000 (GVA) to the local economy while indirectly creating an additional 12 full-time jobs, contributing £480,000 (GVA). Councillors, however, agreed with the planning officers’ recommendation that the scheme should be refused on a number of grounds, including the risk of harm to wildlife, trees and hedgerows; a lack of safe pedestrian and cycle routes and alternatives to using a car to access the town; the loss of agricultural land; inappropriate development of the green belt and the development’s impact on the surrounding landscape. No date has yet been set for a decision by the planning inspectorate. Details of the application and appeal can be viewed online, and comments submitted, via the council’s planning portal at www.bathnes.gov.uk with the reference PP-02994434.

Cafe ‘on track’ to open for summer with ‘number of offers’ on the table Plans to reopen the café in Keynsham Memorial Park for the summer remain “on track”, Bath and North East Somerset Council has said. The authority issued a statement saying a number of offers were on the table after an email sent by its own commercial property department seemed to suggest no applications to run the popular venue had been made just two days before the deadline. The reminder led to a number of formal offers being made, a spokesperson said. “Bath & North East Somerset Council is committed to maintaining a quality café outlet in Keynsham Memorial Park and is currently seeking experienced operators to provide the new catering facility. “Earlier this week [on May 23] the council issued a reminder to parties who had previously registered an interest that the deadline to return formal offers is 5pm on 25 May 2016.

“Following this reminder, a number of formal offers have been submitted. “The council will now consider these offers and remains on track to appoint the operator as soon as possible in the coming weeks to enable the successful operator to open during the popular summer months.” The council has also promised to ensure that Keynsham Music Festival organisers will have access to water and power supplies, even if the reopening of the café is delayed until after

the event. Under an agreement with the previous leaseholders, the water supplies for the festival were accessed via the café. With its closure, organisers told Keynshamvoice they feared there would have to be “significant changes” to the festival. But the council spokesperson said: “In the event that the new operator cannot open the café in time for the Keynsham Music Festival, the council will ensure that the festival organisers have access to power and water supplies. Chairs will also be

provided for the evening events during the week as in previous years. The council will also work with the festival organisers to ensure that catering facilities are available throughout the event.” Many park users have been commenting online about the loss of the café and a petition calling on B&NES to reopen it as soon as possible has attracted more than 100 supporters. Among them, Graham Shaw comments: “This is an important local facility, and a happy place for parents, children, dogwalkers and others who use the wonderful space that is our local park to meet and chat. Please do all you can to enable it to reopen!” And Linda Smith writes: “Been a big loss to the park since closing its doors. [We] need it back asap!” The petition can be found at www.thepetitionsite.com/en-gb/ takeaction/885/592/482/

In Keynsham, Lisa O’Brien, who also represents the Keynsham South ward on B&NES Council, was re-elected as chair for another year. Former town council chair Councillor Clive Fricker was elected as vice-chair for 2016/17. At Saltford Parish Council’s meeting on May 3, Councillor Chris Warren was elected chair, saying he was honoured to be elected. Chris has lived in Saltford since 1998 and is leader of the Saltford Station Campaign, which is calling for the reopening of the village’s railway station.

Deadline for views on 100 new homes

The deadline for comments from the public on plans for 100 new homes off Charlton Road in Keynsham is nearing. Bloor Homes is hoping to get the go-ahead from Bath and North East Somerset Council for the proposals, which would see a 4.3-hectare site bordered by Charlton Road and Parkhouse Lane developed. The new estate would be accessed via a new T-junction off Charlton Road, the developer revealed at a public information event in January. The scheme has won the support of Keynsham Town Council. Meanwhile, one member of the public has called for construction traffic to be required to access the site from the Whitchurch direction, while also pointing out that the number of buses serving that part of Keynsham has been reduced. The deadline for comments is June 7 and they can be submitted online at bathnes.gov. uk’s planning portal with the reference PP-04827330.

Teens’ call for a voice on EU gets backing from all It was a full house at The Space in Keynsham as the venue hosted a debate between six speakers from across the political spectrum on Britain’s membership of the EU on May 27. Held just weeks before the country votes to remain in or leave the European Union on June 23, chair Lisa O’Brien said the event had a waiting list that could have filled the room two times over. For the “remain” campaign, it brought together Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire, B&NES Labour leader Robin Moss and Bath businessman Jay Risbridger, co-ordinator for Britain Stronger in Europe. Speaking for Brexit on the other side of the panel were North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, former UKIP parliamentary candidate for the constituency Ernest Blaber and Ian Kealey, Somerset co-ordinator

for the Grassroots Out campaign. To start the debate, each speaker was asked to explain the single most important point that had shaped their view on whether Britain should stay or remain. For Brexit, Ian Kealey said he felt it was vital that Britain did not “throw away” its democracy, citing a lack of public involvement in EU law and decision making. Mr Blaber said his major concern was the creation of a federal “superstate” by stealth, saying that Britain did not share the experiences of other countries ruled by dictators in the past, who might feel that “anything is better”. Mr Rees-Mogg said Europe was a “failed state”, pointing to high youth unemployment in a number of countries, and crises with the Euro and migration. For “remain”, Mr Risbridger said he felt it was a more efficient way to trade as a member of the

KeynshamNow members Steph Walker, second from right, and Millie Gregg, right, with the speakers at Keynsham’s EU debate EU with workers and consumers benefiting from regulations on working conditions, safety and the environment. Mr Moss said that in a “shrinking world” it was better to face up to challenges as a collection of independent nation states working together. Ms Debbonaire said the most important issue in her view was the future of younger generations and their opportunity to study, live and work where they chose as well as the peace between countries that had been maintained since the 1940s. Opinions were plentiful but hard facts and figures seemed

harder to come by with speakers quoting conflicting statistics on the number of UK laws originating in the EU and varying views on the economic impact of either remaining or staying. Questions from the audience covered a wide range of topics including farming subsidies, free trade with non-European countries, the possibility of a European army and the thorny issue of immigration, which caused raised voices on both sides of the divide within the audience as it was discussed. On the financial benefits of staying or leaving the EU, Mr

Follow us on Twitter @keynshamvoice

Moss perhaps summed it up for both campaigns with the words: “We just don’t know”, but one member of the public tried to bring the debate back to grassroots level, asking if he wanted to keep local services such as libraries, which way should he vote? With both sides agreeing that the UK’s contribution to the EU stands at £8 billion a year, Mr Rees-Mogg said it would represent a “major saving”, and would be “one of the biggest cuts in the austerity programme since 2010”. Pointing to the billions of pounds spent on nuclear decommissioning and alcohol, as examples to “give some context”, Mr Risbridger said he felt the £8bn was “money well spent” on growth and development. There were two very clear voices from Keynsham’s younger generation, too, with Millie Gregg and Steph Walker, the chair and secretary of youth council KeynshamNow respectively, giving their views on the EU debate. Millie told the audience she felt it was “common sense” to remain, with many jobs linked to the EU and access to 500 million customers across the continent.

She also questioned cutting ties with our “closest ally” in the face of raised terror threats and “limiting the freedoms” of the population when it came to travel. Steph, however, branded the EU “anti-democratic” and asked if giving up the right to govern ourselves would be worth it. When it came to trade, being part of the EU cut us off from the rest of the world, she argued. Of course, the evening was never going to bring about a consensus on whether Britain is better off in or out but there was one view that seemed to earn unanimous approval during the debate – lowering the voting age to 16, a call made by both young speakers to give them a voice in a referendum that will have farreaching effects on their generation and future ones. The referendum will be held on Tuesday, June 23, across Britain when voters will be asked: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union? Nature festival sets a course for Keynsham park

Some well-known characters will be among those inviting people to discover the secrets of the River Avon when the Festival of Nature comes to Keynsham for the first time. A day of free, family-friendly activities for wildlife lovers of all ages will be held in the Memorial Park on June 19, from 1-5pm. It is part of the UK’s largest free celebration of nature, which takes place in Bristol and Bath each year, and the river will be at the heart of the two-week event as it moves between the two cities. Dreamshed Theatre will be bringing the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger and Mr Toad to the Bandstand as they perform Wind in the Willows, before the characters lead visitors to handson activities around the park. The arrival of a willow sculpture portraying the Spirit

of the Avon promises to provide a spectacle of colour and sound to start the Keynsham festival, which will also feature a riverbank nature walk with naturalist Gill Brown as well as the chance to become a “water detective” with the University of Bath. The RSPB will also be showing festivalgoers how to build a home for nature, while Transition Keynsham members demonstrate planet-friendly gardening. Tea and cake for monarch’s milestone year With Union flag bunting fluttering in the breeze and a brass band playing, Saltford villagers showed they know how to throw a traditional tea party. Residents raised a cuppa to the Queen’s 90th birthday on May 15, as Saltford Community Association hosted a celebration on the green outside Saltford Hall.

Town hosts floral tribute to Queen’s 90th birthday Beautiful blooms will form the centrepiece of celebrations to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday in Keynsham. St John’s Church is hosting a flower festival in tribute to the monarch’s milestone year on June 11 and 12. As well as a series of floral arrangements created for the event, there will be 20 themed displays around the church, each one celebrating an aspect of the Queen’s life and interests – including Childhood, War Time, Wedding Anniversaries, Hats,

Horse Racing, her faith, the Commonwealth, the Diamond Jubilee and, of course, Corgis! There will also be a rolling slide show of photographs of the Queen and of Keynsham over the last 90 years, which has been specially created by Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society. A member of the festival organising committee, Graham Shaw, said: “We are delighted to be able to open up St John’s Church so that the whole community has an opportunity to cel-

ebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. “We have received so much support and enthusiasm from local organisations and businesses which have provided financial support for the festival, or have offered the creative flair of their flower arrangers to make this a really special occasion.” The festival, which is free to enter, will be open to the public on Saturday, June 11, from 9.30am-12.30pm and then 2.30-8pm. On Sunday, June 12, doors will open from 12.30-6pm. Refreshments will be available.

Tea, cake and sandwiches were provided as guests enjoyed music, a performance from the Farandole Dancers, entertainment from magician John Isaacs, competitions and craft activities for children before a grand finale with singing. Villagers born in 1926 or before were presented with commemorative tins of biscuits and the book The Servant Queen.

Alan looking forward to year as council chairman A Keynsham councillor has been appointed the new chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council for 2016/17. Alan Hale has represented Keynsham South as ward councillor since 2007 and has played an active role in the community since moving to the town in 1957. He has been a member of Keynsham Lions Club for almost 35 years, serving as the group’s president six times, helped found Keynsham Foodbank where he is chairman and coordinator and is a member of Keynsham Baptist Church and volunteer steward at Bath Abbey. Alan has taken on the role of council chairman following a year as vice chairman and will be supporting cerebral palsy, Asperger’s syndrome and dementia charities through fundraising activities during his year in the post. The new role has already taken him to Buckingham Palace in May to represent B&NES Council

Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale has been appointed chairman of B&NES Council at a royal garden party attended by the Queen as well as a number of visits to local organisations and charities. He said: “It is my pleasure to have been appointed as chairman of the council and I am looking forward to meeting as many groups, charities and organisations within Bath and North East Somerset as possible. “For the best part of half a century I have served my local and wider community and I am looking forward to supporting as many people as possible during

my time as chairman. I have chosen the broad areas of my charities for personal reasons but view them as very important and there will be many in the community whose lives are touched by one or other of the conditions.” Alan served with the police for 31 years, during which he was twice commended for bravery, followed by 12 years working as a senior road safety officer with South Gloucestershire Council before leaving in March last year. He is married to Jane, a retired accident and emergency nurse, and they have two daughters and five grandchildren. The new vice chairman of the council is Councillor Cherry Beath, who was first elected as one of the councillors representing Combe Down in 2007. Since then she has also held a number of roles within the council, including executive cabinet member and mayor, and chair of the Charter Trustees Standing Committee.

High-flying teddies invited to join fete

The community is invited to a summer celebration as St John’s Parish Church in Keynsham hosts its annual fete on Saturday, June 25. The grounds around the church, on the High Street, will be filled with stalls, including a coconut shy, crafts and plant stall, and there will also be barbecue food being served up outside as well as tea and cakes in the hall. The church tower will be open to give visitors the chance to enjoy the view from the top by taking a tour and once again children will be invited to bring their teddy bear to ride a zip wire from the very top down to the ground, earning their bear a certificate – as long as they are big enough to fit in the harness! There will be entertainment from a local jazz band, the chance to win prizes in a raffle and a children’s corner with a bouncy castle and facepainting. The event will run from 2-4.30pm.

From film stars to royalty for Summer Jade! Landing a role in a major film might seem as likely as, well, having a chat with the Queen for most of us. But one Keynsham schoolgirl has just done both, in what her family describes as a whirlwind few weeks. Seven-year-old Summer Jade Webber has just returned to her hometown from the Netherlands where she has been filming new comedy movie Who is Alice alongside Strictly Come Dancing and Hollyoaks star Ali Bastian. Despite having no previous acting experience, Summer Jade was picked for the role of Ali’s character’s daughter from among 300 young hopefuls. Life hasn’t quite returned to normal for the family, however, as days after their return they travelled to Larkhill on Salisbury Plain with the hope of spotting the Queen as she visited the Royal School of Artillery on May

26 and presenting her with some flowers. It was a case of right place, right time, Summer Jade’s mum Opal explained, as a royal footman spotted her and another girl and offered to “present them to the Queen”. “There were thousands of people there so we couldn’t believe it,” she said. “Summer Jade was shown how to hold the flowers and how to curtsey and she was bobbing up and down, curtseying away. The Queen said they were lovely flowers and then Summer Jade said she hoped the Queen had a nice day. The Queen gave her one of her amazing smiles and we just tried to get it all on camera! It was magical.” While not much fazes the Saltford C of E pupil, her mum said, she did ask her parents if the meeting really had just happened.

Photo contest to show what town can offer visitors Residents are being urged to grab their cameras and share their favourite views of Keynsham in a competition being run by Keynsham Town Council in association with Keynsham Photographic Society and Visit Somerset. As part of the council’s link with Visit Somerset, the county’s official destination management organisation, new promotional photographs are required to showcase everything Keynsham has to offer to visitors. Town councillor Sam Waite, who has been co-ordinating the competition, said: “The town council decided it would be great to showcase the photography skills of local people instead of hiring a professional photographer for our new tourism material.” He added: “Keynsham is sandwiched between two great cities. However, it is clear we have a very distinct and proud character of our own which should be celebrated. As well

as this, we are lucky to have beautiful rolling countryside on our doorstep as well as a diverse mixture of historical and modern architecture within the town.” The prizes include the winner’s photos being featured on Visit Somerset and Keynsham Town Council promotional material, family tickets for Wookey Hole Caves near Wells and West Somerset Railway near Taunton, as well as a year’s membership of Keynsham Photographic Society. Entries for the competition should be emailed to: keynshamphotocomp@outlook. com by 6pm on Monday, July 25. The judging panel will consist of Keynsham town councillors, as well as the chair of the Keynsham Photographic Society. For further information, visit the town council’s website www. keynsham-tc.gov.uk or contact town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott at Keynsham Town Council, 15-17 Temple Street, call 0117 9868683 or email townclerk@keynshamtc.gov.uk

Official launch is ‘proud moment’ for new academy The importance of applying skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to the real world was highlighted by leading academics at the official opening of a new secondary school in Keynsham. The IKB Academy, which specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), welcomed speakers Praminda Caleb-Solly, associate professor at the University of the West of England, and Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, vice chancellor of the University of Bath, who unveiled a plaque commemorating the occasion. Guests included Councillor Ian Gilchrist, the Government’s regional schools commissioner Rebecca Clark, other education leaders and representatives of the academy’s industry partners. Dame Glynis said STEM subjects were fundamental for the future while Professor CalebSolly, who specialises in assisted living, spoke about the work of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory to develop technology to do the “three Ds” – work that is dull, dirty or dangerous. The academy is part of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust (WMAT), and WMAT chief executive Andrea Arlidge said one of the trust’s goals was to encourage more young women to choose STEM subjects so it was appropriate to welcome two female speakers to the launch event. “This is a proud moment,” she said. “It is the culmination of a vision to develop a really

different type of school here in this part of the West of England; a school that specialises in STEM, working closely with local businesses, industries and higher education so that young people have the opportunity to follow their interests and passions in a real world context in subjects that are so important for our economy.” The academy opened in September with 65 students and will eventually take up to 300 14 to 18-year-olds. The new £3.4 million building opened its doors in March. Guests also heard from sixth-former Curtis Grainger who said he hoped to work in motorsports technology and that studying engineering, maths and product design, along with a work placement at BMT Group, had opened his eyes to the opportunities on offer. The academy has links with a number of major local employers, including Buro Happold, Kier, Arup, Hartwell Jaguar, Atkins and the Ministry of Defence. Chris Trout, chair of governors at IKB Academy, said: “I am confident history will show that IKB has made a valuable contribution to the STEM professions on a national and world scale.” There are still places available in Year 10 and 12 this September and the school is hosting an information evening on July 6 at 6.30pm. Pupils’ experiment really is rocket science! Pupils from Chandag Junior School are taking part in a UKwide project using seeds that have been stored for six months on the International Space Station with British astronaut Tim Peake. The students are growing rocket from the seeds alongside identical seeds that have been stored on Earth so they can compare the plants’ growth. It is a blind study, so the youngsters don’t know which

are the “space” seeds and won’t find out until this month – but so far both sets appear to be doing equally well. The project is a collaboration between the Royal Horticultural Society, the UK Space Agency and the European Space Agency and involves more than 8,000 schools. The results will be compiled to help form a clearer picture of the potential for astronauts to grow their own food on long-term missions.

School sets scene for Bard-inspired bake-off In honour of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death a Keynsham school staged an epic battle – a bake-off. Broadlands Academy challenged Year 7 pupils to design and make a cake inspired by the Bard or any of his plays in its Cakespeare competition. The winning cake – a stack of

books featuring Shakespeare’s plays – was created by Ryan, whose prize was, fittingly, a complete set of retold, modernised and illustrated versions of all of Shakespeare’s tales. Staff were also invited to take part and Miss Daly’s Macbeth-themed cake was judged the winner.

He had to undergo major surgery, which was successful but required a long period of recovery. He remained positive, however, and continued to support his football team, taking on any role he could until finally returning to the pitch recently. Andrew Morse said: “Ben continues to give 100 per cent at every practice and for a 12-yearold boy his attitude in such challenging circumstances is an example to us all.” The award presentation, on May 15, was held at Keynsham Town Football Club, where Andrew and fellow club representative Richard Smale spoke to the audience about the award and Ben’s nomination before Jack’s parents June and Dave presented Ben with the trophy.

A sports-mad Wellsway pupil has been honoured with an award for the courage he showed as he battled back to fitness following heart surgery. Ben Sharp, 12, received the Jack Boulton Award in front of many of his fellow Keynsham Town Junior Football Club members and their families. Keen sportsman Jack died at the age of 17 in 2009 and the award is presented each year in his memory by the Keynsham and Saltford Sports Network to a young sportsperson who shares some of Jack’s personal and sporting qualities. Ben was nominated on behalf of the football club by his coach Andrew Morse. By the age of 10, he had taken up not just football but hockey, tennis and cricket and was showing great potential. As well as playing, Ben was also giving up his own time to share his skills by coaching the football club’s disability group. Life changed greatly for Ben,

Youth group find route to success in map challenge

Harvey from 1st Saltford Cubs

Creative Cubs carve totem for centenary Two Cub Scouts from Saltford won the chance to help carve a totem pole to celebrate 100 years of Cubs. Harvey and Isla from 1st Saltford Cub pack joined youngsters from other districts across Avon to recreate their winning designs as wooden panels. The totem pole was due to be completed over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May before being moved to a permanent site in the Centenary Woodland in Newton St Loe in October.

by Ros Anstey Youngsters put their navigation skills to the test in a string orienteering challenge. Children from the 5 Villages Youth Group were given a coloured map of the course, with topographical features marked on it, and a key to the symbols. The first challenge was to work out their position on the map before setting off to follow the course marked with string. Along the route there were eight check-in points where they had to stop and put a coloured stamp on their map, to show that they had reached that point. They also had to collect tags with their names on, which were dotted along the route before racing back to the finish line to claim a certificate. Organiser Alison ter Haar said: “The kids really enjoyed being outdoors and took up the challenge of negotiating the course by themselves. This activity will have helped them

From left, Maisie, Grace, Joe, Nathan and Jean with their certificates begin to learn about mapping and hiking. The weather was perfect for the hike and all the kids succeeded in completing the course, even little Nathan, aged two. “Several of the older children went round the course again just for fun, and they had a go at climbing a couple of trees before heading back to the village hall

to stock up on tuck, and have a well-earned drink of water,” she added. The 5 Villages Youth Group is open to children living in Compton Dando, Chewton, Burnett, Woollard and Queen Charlton and usually meets on the first Friday of the month. The years have taken their toll on the floor at Scout HQ – but you can help ensure many more memories are made there, the group explains

Children from 324 Playgroup get ready to run off some energy at their sports day

Playgroup youngsters prove they’re good sports A bright and breezy day was the perfect setting for 324 Playgroup’s sports day. The children at the Keynsham-based group had a great time running off some energy in the beanbag race and the shopping game to name but a few.

Around 30 children competed with many parents and grandparents cheering them on. The children all received medals, which they all wore with pride. The pre-school, which is situated off Chandag Road, holds a sports day annually as well as

many other fun events and fundraisers. 324 Playgroup was rated “good” after an Ofsted inspection in November 2015 and still has some spaces left for children starting in September. Parents can contact the pre-school for more information.

North, South, East or West, Crab football or Bulldog – which would you choose to play? Anyone who has ever been a Scout in Keynsham will have memories of these three games, but what do they have in common? Yes, you have guessed it, the old Scout HQ floor. Either running around the room end to end or side to side trying to remember compass points, getting down and crab-like looking to score a goal or simply trying to crash your way to the other end without being lifted off the floor – the memory lives with you together with the noise as the floor is pounded by many feet. Ah, memories…. It is those memories for the young men and women

Cubs build on their links with nature in projects Saltford Cubs have been getting closer to nature in a series of activities, from making homes for wildlife to finding out where their food comes from. Youngsters from 1st Saltford pack have now put the finishing touches to nesting boxes for birds and bug boxes for bees and other insects, which they started work on in January. Some of the boxes already have nests in them, which helped the pack take part in the RSPB’s annual birdwatch, and the project will help them earn their DIY and Naturalist badges. Cub Scout leader Tina Curtis said: “This has been a really useful project. The cubs brought along a parent with a hammer/ screwdriver to help them on the night, and they all really enjoyed helping their sons and daughters make something useful.” The youngsters also paid a visit to Tesco in Keynsham to take part in a “Farm to Fork” session, where they learned

More than 400 people visited the Keynsham Explorer Scouts’ popular plant sale in May, raising nearly £2,000 for the unit. The sale was held at Scout HQ offering a range of plants for flower beds and hanging baskets, and a spokesperson for the group said: “Let’s hope those flowers can now make a difference around the town for the Keynsham In Bloom show.” Scouts, Beavers and Cubs themselves have been putting in some hard work to get the town ready for the In Bloom judges’ visit. The flower beds in Ashton Way car park are coming alive with colour after the youngsters decided to tackle the overgrown planters last summer.

Teacher facing ‘biggest physical challenge’ with tough 100km run

Broadlands Academy teacher Kelly Daly and twin sister Kim

Mon - Wed 9-5.30 | Thursday 9-8 Friday 9-6 | Saturday 9-4 earlier appointments on request

Rather than putting her feet up at the end of the school year, a teacher from a Keynsham secondary will be marking the start of the holidays with a gruelling physical challenge. Kelly Daly, a PE teacher at Broadlands Academy, will be tackling a 100km ultramarathon (just over 62 miles) over two days in July, running from the Chilterns in Oxfordshire to the finish line next to the ancient stone circle in Avebury, Wiltshire. Describing it as the biggest physical challenge of her life, Miss Daly and her twin sister Kim, who is joining her in the race, are now entering peak training, running long distances five times a week. Their preparation for the Race to the Stones on July 16 and 17 will also include two training runs of 26.2 miles – full-length marathons – while they expect to clock up 516 miles in total during training. The sisters’ hard work is set

to benefit seriously ill children as they collect sponsorship in aid of The Rainbow Trust, a charity that provides support at home, in hospital and in the community for the whole family. Miss Daly said: “The pain we will go through for two days will be nothing compared to the pain and heartache of the families with children suffering with life-threatening or terminal illnesses.” To find out more about Miss Daly’s challenge and to donate, visit https://www.justgiving. com/KellyandKim For more about the work of The Rainbow Trust, go to https://rainbowtrust.org.uk

Work to retain town’s gold Bloom award in full swing before judging The busiest time of year has arrived for Keynsham in Bloom volunteers as they prepare to showcase the town to judges in the South West in Bloom competition, helped by many community groups. Judges Lesley Jelleyman and Richard Taylor will be visiting Keynsham on Friday, July 15, when they will be taken on a tour to see the floral displays and projects that have been worked on for many months in advance. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James said: “Last year we achieved our first gold award, and we are all aiming for gold again this year. Communities play a major role in the competition and we are very proud of the work that our communities carry out throughout the year, much of which probably goes unnoticed. “We will be taking the judges out to meet the various community groups, so they can see for themselves the work that has been going on throughout the year.” Judges will be meeting volunteers from St Dunstan’s Church Community Garden, Old Vicarage Green, Friends of Keynsham Railway Station, 1st Keynsham Scouts, Community@ 67, Keynsham Baptist Church, Homeavon House, Keynsham Wombles, Keynsham Allotment Association and Transition Keynsham as well as visiting the award-winning Memorial Park. One area that has seen a lot of activity in recent weeks is Keynsham Station where volunteers have been filling

troughs with plants. Denise said: “We are extremely grateful to Wyevale Garden Centre at Hicks Gate for sponsoring the

troughs this year, and providing the plants and compost. The planters certainly help to welcome commuters to this busy

little station. First Great Western is also very grateful for the work that is being carried out by the volunteers. “We hope that the judges will be impressed when they visit the station as part of the main judging tour.” The In Bloom group also launched a competition for local youngsters to design a birthday card for the Queen’s 90th and prizes, sponsored by the town’s Tesco store, were handed out to the winners at Keynsham Explorer Scouts’ plant sale last month by Tesco Community Champion Neil Baker. Denise said: “It was wonderful to see how happy the children were when they were being awarded their prizes.”

With the weather starting to change, this brings different issues for the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT). The main focus when not dealing with crime is anti-social behaviour. The lighter nights generally mean that everything from the parks to the pubs get busier. Through visible, effective policing and interaction we look to prevent problems before they occur. When incidents do occur we look to identify and deal fairly and robustly with offenders, involving our partner agencies if necessary. Keynsham embraces this time of year with lots of public events, from the Music Festival, the various beer and cider festivals to a large number of school fetes and other exciting

activities. All of these provide the NPT with different policing challenges, from arranging to be present at fetes with a police vehicle to interact with the local children and communities to the design and implementation of operation orders for larger events. We are generally aware of what is happening, but if you have an event coming up and you think we should know about it, or you would like us to attend, then please make contact via the Avon and Somerset website by selecting the area in which you live. l Incidents of note this month: The NPT conducted a successful warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act on the west side of Keynsham and we will be looking to action more warrants

over the coming months. The crime trends at the moment are still mostly vehiclebased. We have suffered thefts of motorcycles and mopeds in the Keynsham/ Saltford and Compton Dando areas. At this time of year more people are involved in motocross and trials events. The transportation of bikes to and from these events, often uncovered, makes them easy to spot. Be aware that thieves can follow you from these events to identify your storage locations and target these later. Make sure you have all identifying marks from vehicles recorded, and that you use a variety of security measures. Also, if you are selling bikes do not give your home address as this is another

method thieves use to identify storage locations. Theft from motor vehicles is still an issue, so if you have tools in your vehicle then please lock them away and make sure that they are security marked. If you wish to make contact with us you can call the nonemergency police contact number 101, or visit the Avon and Somerset website and look for your local NPT contact page or pop into the one-stop shop at Keynsham Civic Centre. The next Connecting Communities Meeting, which we will be attending, will be held on Thursday, June 30, at the Somerdale Pavilion. Information about this public meeting can be found at www. bathnes.gov.uk

This is a first for me but I felt I had to write concerning the parking in Keynsham due to the council employees being relocated and the fact that parking on the side streets has become intolerable and dangerous. It’s to the point that

Moving them from one secure place to another does not help the people fleeing danger. That is why the British Government is willing to take children directly from refugee on occasions trying to drive in or out of Corfe Crescent for access or exiting the garages as well as homes has been impossible due to totally inconsiderate parking. I have had to drive across the grass verge to exit the crescent at times meaning that if an ambulance was required by the homes there it would not be able to attend by vehicle. It desperately needs double yellow lines, at least on one side. As to the ridiculous suggestion of raising the parking fees to encourage the use of public transport, that’s comical. All that would do is cause even more drivers to park on side streets, stopping residents being able to park anywhere near their homes. Please get the Keynsham

It is here that the people are most at risk and furthest from safety. If they are brought over by the Government then they do not need to take a hazardous journey which has killed parking situation sorted in a practical way. While on the subject of parking, I watched two traffic wardens walk straight past the loading bay outside the library full of cars on Saturday morning. The issue of refugee children is not an easy one to deliberate upon in Parliament. All Members want to protect children from the ravages of war and to ensure that they can find safe refuge. It is a matter of how this can best be done, to look after those most at risk and to discourage dangerous journeys which may endanger life even more than the risk of remaining. It is in this context that the Government has been reluctant to take children from continental Europe. As a general principle once someone, adult or child, has reached a

£2.2m to encourage cycling and walking

An extra £2.2 million in funding has been awarded to councils in the West to encourage people to switch to cycling and walking. Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have been awarded the cash by the Department for Transport to invest in sustainable transport. The money will go towards a number of projects, including working with schools as they develop travel plans and supporting employers to improve sustainable transport options for staff. Transport strategies are currently being developed by B&NES Council for Keynsham, Chew Valley and Somer Valley.

News in brief Town hosts reunion for ex-workmates

More than 100 former colleagues from NatWest Bristol Overseas Branch enjoyed a reunion in Keynsham last month. With many of the organisers based in Keynsham, the town’s Conservative Club hosted the gettogether, with people travelling from across the country and even abroad to meet up with old friends. Keynsham resident Carol Watkins, who worked for NatWest in the late Seventies and early Eighties, said the 20th anniversary of closure seemed an appropriate time to organise a reunion. “Although it's been 20 years since the demise of the branch, in many cases people hadn't seen each other for more than 30 years. Some attendees travelled from as far away as Stockport, London and Kent, and there were a few now based even further away, the Netherlands and France, who made special efforts to get here.”

The office was based in central Bristol, opening in 1971 and closing in 1996. The reunion made an unexpected surplus, which has now been donated to St Peter’s Hospice.

Staff warming up for fundraising weekend Supermarket staff will be going the extra mile for their chosen charities with a weekend of sports-themed fun this month. Workers at Tesco Keynsham will be putting on their sports kits for the fundraising activities on Saturday, June 4, and welcoming a mascot to cheer them on as they raise funds for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation, the retailer’s charities partners for 2016. There will be a football goal at the entrance to the store, healthy snacks and a raffle, with a collection being held for the good causes held throughout the weekend.

Window into life at famous factory

From a vast array of photos charting life at a famous Bath company, a local museum has shared these images with Keynshamvoice readers. When engineering firm Stothert and Pitt closed in the late Eighties, a huge collection of images was passed to the

Museum of Bath at Work. Every picture has now been added to the museum’s digital archive and among them are photos of the company’s machinery in use during the construction of the Keynsham Bypass, above, and visits by Keynsham students to the Stothert and Pitt factory on Lower Bristol Road – a group from Broadlands in 1966, below

left, and Wellsway in 1964, below right. The archive, which includes pictures of equipment being made and used, as well as workers at the factory and many social occasions, is available to view by the public. The museum, in Julian Road, Bath, houses a reconstruction of the Bowler engineering and mineral water factory and

displays on many local industries in and around Bath, as well as changing exhibitions. The team is currently at work on a collection of 12,000 slides from South West Gas, which was based in Keynsham. The museum is open daily from 10.30am-5pm until October 31, and then at weekends only until March 31. To find out more, visit www.bath-at-work.org.uk

Dig out unwanted tools for club’s collection People in Keynsham and Saltford are being urged to give unwanted tools a new lease of life by donating them to a charity collection at a local supermarket this month. The Rotary Club of Keynsham Chew Valley is supporting Tools for Self Reliance, which refurbishes tools and sends them to communities in Africa where builders, blacksmiths, seamstresses and more can use

them to farm, build schools and homes, sew school uniforms and earn a living. Rotary Club members will be collecting tools – but not electrical items – in Waitrose Keynsham’s car park on Saturday, June 11, from 8am1pm. Tools for Self Reliance, a UK-based charity, also helps to provide training in how to use the tools and more information is available at www.tfsr.org

Student launches into the luxury market with app

A young entrepreneur from Saltford is poised to make his award-winning business idea a reality, before he has even left university. University of Bath student James Courtney, 22, has developed an app that allows customers to earn reward points when they dine out at highend restaurants in Bristol and Bath, which can then be spent on luxury treats or donated to charity. The idea for LUX won the university’s business plan competition in April and, as his prize, James, who also won the award in 2015, will soon be travelling to New York and San Francisco to network with university alumni in the States, as well as work with global firms including Facebook, JPMorgan Chase and Eventbrite. James said: “Winning the business plan competition for a second

year running is very special, particularly as my business is actually becoming a reality. “The competition has helped me to develop my idea, provided me with links to investors, and given me the confidence to go forward with the idea. “I can’t wait for the trip to the States. Experiencing the start-up scene in San Francisco has been a dream for me in the last couple of years and I'm very much looking forward to meeting some inspirational alumni out there." The third-year business administration student is putting his venture into action, with a number of restaurants already signed up and half of his investment total of £150,000 already secured. Professor Veronica Hope Hailey, Dean of the School of Management, added: “We’re very proud to count James as one of our students. We’re accustomed

Saltford entrepreneur James Courtney has launched an app – LUX to our students spending their placement year at some of the UK’s most prestigious companies and organisations, but to spend the year setting up and running your own business is an impressive undertaking and we wish him every success.”

James has now launched an online crowdfunding campaign, which aims to raise up to £80,000 from new investors. James said he spotted a gap in the market for a reward scheme for higher spenders at the UK’s “full-service” restaurant market,

which has a value of £17.9 billion, he explains. Working with him on the venture are Bath graduate Josh Maynard, James’ father John Courtney, who has launched and run six companies over the past 35 years, and Richard Godfrey,

a former senior architect at Microsoft and founder of local tech company Rocketmakers. James has ambitious plans for LUX and hopes to see it grow from the South West. He said: “We want to prove the concept in Bristol and Bath, before we scale up and expand into London in 2017.” The LUX app has launched in the Google and Apple app stores and more information about LUX and James’s crowdfunding campaign is available at ideasquares.com/s/65822e8303

Leaflets to guide walkers around area’s rich history Two new leaflets have been published to guide walkers to historic sites in and around Keynsham. Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society has completed the first two in a series of leaflets that aim to encourage families to enjoy country walks and learn about the area’s past at the same time. Produced with the help of a grant from Keynsham Town Council, the leaflets are in full colour and feature a map with full instructions plus information on points of historical interest along the way. Richard Dyson from the society said: “A great deal of work has gone into these and we are very pleased with the result. “Our area has a rich history but without a guide it is easy to overlook this; there is a story behind almost every building. “We hope that these walks

Celebrating 50 years of fun and new friendships A Keynsham charity will be celebrating the many friendships and relationships it has helped form as it marks a special anniversary this month. Keynsham District Mencap Society is one of more than 600 groups across the UK that will be marking the 50th anniversary of the Gateway Federation, which brought together the many clubs working with Mencap to provide leisure, social and creative activities to people with learning disabilities. Keynsham’s Mencap group offers weekly social clubs for members aged from five to adults, outings and sporting activities, including a football club, fitness club and the Paralympic sport boccia. The federation’s Jubilee will take place during Mencap’s Learning Disability Week, which runs from June 20 to 26, and the theme for this year is friendship and relationships. Groups across the country

Keynsham Mencap Society members at their Nineties disco were invited by the national charity to pick a decade from the Sixties to today and hold themed parties and Keynsham’s 18+ Club enjoyed a Nineties disco at St Dunstan’s Hall on May 19 to reflect the fact the local society became affiliated to the charity in 1990. Now plans are well under way for an even bigger 50th anniversary party at Avon Valley Country and Wildlife Park, as fundraiser Amanda Leonard explains. “We are hosting an event for members and volunteers past and present, their families, as

well as members of other local Mencap groups that we work with in the Bath, Bristol, and Wiltshire area. “Local businesses and supporters of the society along with their families will also be invited to enjoy an afternoon of music, pets corner, tractor rides, indoor and outdoor play areas and barbecue food, by way of thanking them for their support over the years. Keynsham & District Mencap Society relies on the support of our local community and local businesses in order to keep its services running. Although affiliated by National Mencap they are not funded by them and receive no statutory funding so every penny really does count.” Keynsham and District Mencap Society is the Beacon Club for the region, having been recognised for good practice by National Mencap, and works with other clubs to offer support and guidance.

Church’s avenue of 250-year-old trees removed

by Ros Anstey It is the end of an era for St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando, whose avenue of lime trees leading to the church has been cut down. After 250 years this beautiful

avenue of trees was declared dangerous and was felled last month. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) took expert advice, which revealed that five needed to be cut down immediately and

another five in the next few years. The PCC said that this would leave an unsightly row, so they decided to remove all of them at the same time. The trees will be replaced by new limes.

Do you fancy playing table tennis? If so, a group of people in Compton Dando are inviting you to come along to one of their table tennis afternoons in the village hall, writes Ros Anstey. At present a doubles tournament takes place about every three weeks on Sunday afternoons, and at the last event people of all abilities were taking part. The entry fee to play is £3, or you can just come along and support at a charge of £1. The cost includes tea/coffee/biscuits. Organiser Richard Davis said: “Players of all abilities are welcome, even if you haven’t played before.” To find out more, call Richard on 01761 490727 or email richardjamesdavis@hotmail.com

Patients call for new Parkinson’s meet-up

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham Every year on June 5 the United Nations marks World Environment Day. Established in 1972, for the past 43 years it has been a vehicle to highlight global environmental threats, from acid rain to climate change. This year the focus is on the illegal wildlife trade, which is pushing many species to the brink of extinction. Every year, thousands of wild animals are illegally killed, often by organised international criminal networks driven by profit and greed. These networks can threaten peace and security in affected countries, and damage the livelihoods of local communities who depend on tourism. It also severely affects local biodiversity. Between 2010 and 2012, 100,000 elephants were killed for their ivory in Africa. Three

rhinos are killed every day, and the Western Black Rhino has already become extinct. Great apes are already locally extinct in several African nations. But less well known animals are also under severe threat. Pangolins – scaly anteaters – are the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world. This rampant illegal international trade in almost all its body parts, from scales to skin to meat, is principally driven by demand from China. Plants are illegally traded too. The rare and beautiful Madagascan rosewood is highly

33

prized in Asia, and suffers from widespread and uncontrolled illegal logging. It’s a very slow growing tree, so demand is rapidly outstripping supply, and there is a real threat of extinction. This trade needs to be stopped. Politicians, police and customs can make the biggest difference, but individuals can also play a part by finding out more about the issues at https://wildfor.life/ or at http://www.worldwildlife.org/ threats/illegal-wildlife-trade And when we go on holiday we can all ask questions and get the facts before we buy wildlife or plant products. By doing that, we can help reduce demand for this illegal trade. Together we can beat this terrible crime against wildlife. Find out more about Transition Keynsham at http:// transitionkeynsham.org

A local support group is hoping to launch regular meetings for people living with Parkinson’s disease in and around Keynsham and their loved ones. Volunteers from the Bath and District branch of Parkinson’s UK hosted a stall at an open day at Keynsham Health Centre on May 14, where they met many residents who had been diagnosed with the condition or had family members or friends with Parkinson’s. A spokesperson for the group said: “The upshot was a strongly-felt need for an opportunity for people in or very near Keynsham to get together over a cup of coffee, perhaps once a month. We at the stall were inspired to seek to arrange this if a suitable venue could be found.” A monthly coffee morning is currently held at Foxhill Community Centre in Bath where all are welcome, including carers, and more information is available from chairman Robin Tanner on 01225 812 894, vice-chairman John Saunders on 01761 432 452 or Hazel Mitchell on 0117 336 0476.

Eye-catching exhibition as artists unite to show their varied skills by Ros Anstey The Cam Valley Arts Trail group's Spring Exhibition and Sale, held recently at Conygre Hall in Timsbury, was a huge success, with lots of visitors enjoying the event. Blackbirds, which form part of the Cam Valley group’s logo by Kate Westcott, could be found dotted around the hall and the children who attended the trail could win a prize for finding all the birds hiding among the stalls. Karen George, the group’s chairman, said: “A large number of children had a wonderful time hunting for the birds, and their parents enjoyed the trail around the varied stalls at our venue.” The children’s art competition was won by Delilah, from High Littleton, with her pastel drawing of a blackbird. Creators of a broad spectrum of arts and crafts were represented at this diverse annual show: watercolour artists, acrylic artists, textile

Keynsham Music Festival Week 2016

35

Monday, June 27 - Sunday, July 3

Victoria Klewin, above, and Nasrudin are in the wide-ranging line-up for this year’s festival

A small town with a big sound...

K

eynsham Music Festival is now one of the most successful “free” whole town community events in the UK, write organisers. While it is also one of the largest, and highly organised, it retains, at its heart, the feel of a small town or even village event. This is something to be cherished and protected, and we can be proud of a whole-community participation that achieves just that! Especially as we move towards the 20th festival in 2017. Keynsham Music Festival features a wide range of excellent and interesting food and drink, with a priority for local operators. This is no more true than with the on-site bars, all of which now are Keynsham pubs-in-the-park with an agreed and very reasonable price range and a minimum of queuing. Please note that no glass can be brought onto the site, and alcohol in glass containers will be confiscated. The festival relies on the community’s care of the park. Festival goers should respect the facilities and provision in the park for rubbish and help to maintain our honoured tradition leaving the park on the Monday morning with the

impression that nothing had happened over the weekend! We are indebted to the Keynsham Wombles for their work in ensuring that rubbish is never a problem for the audience and families. The festival is also indebted to the whole community and all the individuals who make the Keynsham Music Festival a widely acclaimed family and community event; and to all the performers, local and international, who give their services for free in what is still a real celebration of local and original talent. The festival relies on the funding of Keynsham Town Council, B&NES and the generosity of local business and service supporters. Please respect our sponsors, and please remember that your donations are also a crucial part of meeting the festival’s costs – over £60,000. Donations are not obligatory in any way, but still provide the festival with an essential source of income. And for all the festival supporters it is worth remembering that the full economic survey of the 2014 festival verified just how much the event gives in return to the town’s economy. For the first time, tickets will be available online at www. keynshamtickets.cloudvenue.co.uk as well as from the venues or on 0117 986 8683. Photo: Keynsham Music Festival

Cars, choirs and even a quiz... The festival isn’t about just one afternoon in the park, of course. There will once again be a whole range of events taking place around Keynsham during the week leading up to the main event on Sunday, July 3. Saltford flautist Chris Docherty kicks off Festival Week on Monday, June 27, performing with pianist John Talbot at The Space from 7.30pm. Then from 9.30pm it’s over to The Old Bank on the High Street for the first ever Great Keynsham Music Festival Pub Quiz, with prizes and music. The following evening,

on Tuesday at 7.30pm, The Cantabile Consort – a collection of music students and professional musicians from Cardiff – will perform at St John’s Church, with Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater forming the centrepiece. Jazz singer and songwriter Ros Cuthbert is bringing her band to The Old Manor on Wednesday, June 29, at 7.30pm, while over at The Ship a number of local artists will be performing acoustic sets from 8.45pm. Simply Opera will be treating residents at The Hawthorns to a preview of their show to be

staged later on Thursday evening in the Memorial Park, while The Ship is welcoming performers from Jelli Records from 8.30pm. On Friday evening, two speakers will be taking to the stage in the Top Marquee for a thought-provoking evening hosted by Keynsham Action Network – more on that on Page 39. Meanwhile, ChoirJam, KLOGs, and Grenville Jones’ Good Afternoon Choir will be coming together at St John’s Church for Keynsham Choir Festival 2016 from 7.30pm. Cinema Under the Stars will

also be returning from 10pm on Friday night, with the Rocky Horror Show coming out top in a public vote. Revving up for the main event, Saturday in the Park will be back for the second year and will feature a procession of vintage and classic cars as well as a Folk Festival in the Performance Tent. The Saturday night Gala Concert is also back but with the Bristol Fantasy Orchestra stepping into Keynsham Orchestra’s usual slot, bringing with them strange outfits and an unexpected repertoire.

l There will be some changes to the stages at this year’s festival, organisers have revealed. The TimeOut Tent will be replaced by the all-new Abbey Stage, giving a nod to Keynsham’s history and hosting a range of performers on the Sunday, from J:Stevens Rap to acoustic duo Tea & Biscuits. Meanwhile, Grounded’s courtyard garden will also be hosting a varied line-up of performers on the Saturday and the Sunday. The café will be serving its full menu over the weekend, as well as a range of locally brewed beer and cider – visit www.cafegrounded. co.uk/menus A spokesperson for the venue said: “We’re really excited to be part of Keynsham music festival again this year - it’s such a lovely event, and is a testament to the vibrant community in Keynsham.”

Songwriter Joe looks to the future Homegrown talent has a strong presence at Keynsham Music Festival and among the local acts taking to the stage this year is 19-year-old Joe Carreyett. It’s set to be a memorable summer for the Keynsham singer-songwriter as he is releasing his debut EP Future as well as performing at festivals around the region, as part of DNA Arts and Boomsatsuma’s The Next Generation Tour, which aims to put young local musicians in the spotlight. Joe says the festivals, including Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, will be his biggest shows to date and he is looking forward to getting more experience of performing in front of crowds “here, there and everywhere”. The former Wellsway pupil, who began writing songs at the

age of 15, describes his sound as a fusion of folk, rock and pop that pulls at the heart strings, often taking day-to-day activities and news stories as his inspiration. He said: “The songs on the album [Future] are a mixture of folk ballads interspersed with more upbeat tracks with a flavour of hip hop and also an instrumental piano piece. It is an EP with a mixture of genres that showcases musical diversity.” Joe is studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma at Bath College before beginning a three-year degree in songwriting at BIMM Bristol from October. He also runs a pre-school music group at Magna Minors in the Chew Valley, which promotes a love of music in the early years. He said: “My ultimate ambition is to be involved in music

any way I can. Whether it is performing in front of thousands of people, teaching a class of 15 students, or producing in a studio with two colleagues, I feel that music is the best way for me to express myself.” Joe is launching his EP on June 13 at Chapel Arts Centre in Bath and will be performing at The Ship Inn, Temple Street, on June 29 as part of Music Festival Week. Some of Joe’s tracks can be found at soundcloud.com – search Joe Carreyett.

For the first time Live Simply brings to you an all-female double bill for this July’s annual Music Festival Big Tent Talk, entitled What Lies Beneath: Root causes and bold solutions for today’s environmental and economic challenges. Here they introduce the two speakers.

l

On Friday, July 1, at 7pm two extraordinary women will bring their stories about how to save the world from the genius and the foolishness of the human. Eve Poole, above left, has a PhD in capitalism and theology from Cambridge University. Eve

asks: “In a testosterone-driven market place where men seek to cut each other’s throats, would women have acted differently, choosing to co-operate, rather than compete, when faced with a crisis? Would life for us

all be different if there had been a Lehman Sisters instead of a Lehman Brothers?” Eve argues that communication and sharing can be a better outcome sometimes in a competitive environment.

Kate Rawles is an action woman! She does “outdoor philosophy”. Her 2006 longdistance cycle ride took her from Texas to Alaska following the spine of the Rocky Mountains exploring climate change. In 2014 she was “mission leader” with Pangaea Exploration from the UK to the Azores and Lanzarote focusing on ocean plastic pollution. Kate asks: “What are the root cause of our multiple environmental challenges?” Find more information at www.live-simply.co.uk Tickets £6.50 from www. keynshamtickets.cloudvenue. co.uk or from Keynsham Town Council on 0117 986 8683.

Tandoori-style chicken thighs with Cinnamon This recipe has been created so you can create authentic Indian food on your barbecue courtesy of Cinnamon Indian Cuisine. An alternative is to order your pre-marinated tandoori/ tikka chicken and lamb from Cinnamon ready for you to cook on your own barbecue. Chicken thighs are one of the most versatile parts of the chicken and are really easy to

cook – it is like the breast, but is less likely to dry out due to the skin and fat content. The fat will render out in the cooking process, leaving very succulent and tasty chicken. Also, as a bonus, thighs are generally cheaper than breast. This part of the bird is not usually found in a restaurant, however it is a typical Indian home cooking dish cooked on

a grill similar to the British barbecue. Ingredients l Six chicken thighs (or however many you require) l One tblspn of Greek yoghurt l Tspn of honey l Half tspn of garam masala l Half a tspn of cumin seeds l Half a tspn of ground coriander

Method If you are using more than six thighs, increase the quantities accordingly. If desired, for speed and ease of cooking remove the bone from the thigh and butterfly the pieces. Simply add all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir to form a paste. Add the thighs to the mixture and ensure all of the chicken is covered with the paste. Cover and leave in the fridge for two hours to marinate. Place skin-down on the barbecue, turning every few minutes until the chicken has cooked through and skin is crispy. Serve with the fresh coriander and lemon as a garnish.

If you are generally quite stiff and inflexible, a warm-up may help avoid injuries caused by over-zealous digging. A warmup and cool-down period can be as helpful in gardening as it is for any other physical activity. Go for a power walk before you begin as this will help you warm up and minimise potential muscle aches and pains. It is important to be aware of your body technique, body form and correct posture when gardening. It sounds like a cliché, but “bend the knees” really is the best method. Kneel, don’t bend from the waist, and alternate your stance and movements as often as possible to keep the muscles

The judges said: “We were particularly impressed by the wide-ranging uses and flexibility of the spaces that had been created and the extent to which they were being used. The focus on local business development within the town also reinforced the community commitment and impressed the judges.” The Civic Centre lost out to Plymouth’s Genesis Building, a new business centre supporting economic regeneration in its community.

In the Garden My diary tells me that May was a very mixed month in terms of weather. Several nights were close to zero degrees. Some days were quite violent with wind and heavy rain and other days were 16-17 degrees. Our baskets for hanging were not made up until late in the month, and at present are still cowering in shelter. But nevertheless, at the moment all the fruit trees have had full blossom, the roses are very vigorous

On the Plot I guess gardeners always moan about the weather but we now seem to have longer dry spells, which means the soil surface needs watering where seeds have been sown, seedlings are appearing or new plants have just been planted. Established plants will find moisture as their roots push deeper into the soil so don’t worry about them unless it stays dry for a long period. The best time to water is either early morning or evening as this allows the water to penetrate the soil before the surface dries out again. By now most if not all of this year’s tender vegetables should

and other perennials are growing well. Mention of roses reminds me to make a second spraying against black spot. They had treatment about three weeks ago and another blast will do them no harm. Last year the roses looked quite miserable, so I hope they will have recovered. Also, look out for the dreaded lily beetle. We have already found and despatched them accordingly. In our wild meadow patch, now in its seventh or eighth year, new plants continue to arrive. What is noticeable is the number of buttercups that have appeared. They have probably increased by a factor of five, and stand quite tall among the grasses and other plants. We have also noticed some very dainty pale pink petaled flowers which up to now have defied identification. June seems to be the month of summer, probably because the flowers become noticeable. We

have several ferns which slowly uncoil and reach their normal height and they have just done that. They look fresh and green with the tops of the stems bright green and shadowy near the base. Pink wild geraniums are in a clump behind the ferns and pulmonarias cover quite a space. A potentilla has some pretty pink flowers, alongside a bronze berberis and a hebe. What have we to do in June? Any hedges can be clipped now that nesting time has passed. They are always worth a bit of time and effort and when cut in the traditional A-shape with sides and top meeting in a straight line, there is a lot of satisfaction felt. All the summer flowers will need feeding and probably watering. Big terracotta pots and urns can dry out very quickly in strong sunlight, especially if a breeze is blowing. A good plant to have in any garden is agapanthus. There are

many varieties but only the most suitable are selected for growing. Probably the better ones to grow are deciduous, as they are more hardy than the evergreens. Theyseem to grow well in full sun and provide, when mature, a good eye-catching clump. They like a good, rich, moist soil, so keep them well fed and watered. Mid-June is also a good time for pruning. Our wisteria has flowered and dropped, so there is one job. Also early summer shrubs such as deutzia and philadelphus, if they are mature. Lawns and grass meadows will need some attention. If they were fed and weeded in April they should be growing well by now and regular cutting is needed. Last summer I tried to cut the lawn twice a week, and I think it looks better. One thing to be sure to do is find time to relax and enjoy. It is the reward for earlier work in the garden.

be planted but keep an eye out for the pests, in particular slugs and snails which are prolific this year, so some form of prevention is needed. I avoid using slug pellets because they kill the pest as well as the pest’s natural predators but to be honest I run the risk of losing cherished plants almost overnight. Beer traps work well but you have to deal with the casualties caught in them. Traps can be bought in most gardening outlets and, provided you don’t mind wasting some beer, then this method will work by attracting the slugs and snails into the trap where they “drown” in the beer. There are other options including coffee grounds, broken

egg shells and oats scattered around the plant. The latter is fairly cheap and the slugs gorge on the oats which eventually swell inside their bodies. If you use pellets, try to buy the type that is less harmful to pets and wildlife. Remember to provide the young brassica plants with some net protection to stop the pigeons from stripping them bare. Keep an eye on the weeds which will grow like crazy at this time of year. There is no easy answer to controlling weeds but it is an essential chore. This month should see continued cropping of asparagus as well as broad beans. The latter can be plagued by black

fly so pinch out the tops when they flower as this is where the infestations normally take hold. Continue to repeat sow carrots, salad vegetables, beetroot, peas, spring onions and spinach this month so that you get an uninterrupted supply. It’s not too late to sow swede and turnips for an autumn or winter crop as well as runner beans for a late summer crop. Clear an area to plant leek plants, which should be ready for planting in July, and find some space to plant flowers that attract the bees so they can pollinate your crops. Bees are critical to successful gardening and vital to the food chain and they need all the help we can provide.

Summer school could be first step to a stage career

Children aged between four and 19 are hoping the Bristol School of Performing Arts Summer School at White Hart Lodge on Brislington Hill will be their first step towards a life treading the boards in musical venues around the country. The school, which is run by John Redgrave, has the reputation of being a first-class teaching establishment, where big budget theatrical productions at the Hippodrome and Bath Theatre Royal trawl for talented young musicians, actors, singers and dancers. The school counts among its patrons such familiar names as Bill Kenwright, known for his successful West End and touring productions, and Vanessa Redgrave who is in fact John Redgrave’s cousin. Professional artists who will be appearing at the summer school and inspiring young performers are BSPA regulars Amanda Salmon with over ten years in London’s West End, including two years as Eponine

Bristol School of Performing Arts at White Hart Lodge, Brislington Hill in Les Miserables; Elysia Lawrence-Tebb, professional choreographer and past touring choreographer for the musical Annie; musical director Simon Carr-Minns who has done 20 years at the prestigious Italia Conte Theatre School in London; and Emma Weaver, head of our junior school and the voice of Bella in The Tweenies and Mina in Jelly Jamm. Mr Redgrave has been in the entertainment profession for over 50 years and has experience in all areas of showmanship. As a director he has worked with

many stars, including Norman Wisdom, Ken Dodd, Frankie Howerd, Tony Bennett and Sarah Brightman. He is also highly regarded in the theatrical world for his skills as a producer and lighting designer. Children from BSPA have appeared professionally in many Hippodrome productions over the years, including The Lion King, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Sound of Music and Evita plus many more. Only recently, 80 youngsters appeared alongside Joe McElderry in Joseph and his Amazing

Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Playhouse Theatre, Westonsuper-Mare, a production with which the school has been associated for in excess of 40 years, giving young performers the chance to work alongside seasoned professionals and to regularly experience the learning curve of appearing on the stage of a number one touring theatre. Why not take the opportunity of a FREE trial session, or apply to join our summer school and work with professional directors, choreographers and vocal coaches, all of whom are very actively engaged in the profession and visit us from their London base for this very special week. This year’s summer school will take place from Monday, July 25, to Saturday, July 30. Community spirit helps cricketers raise £6,800 in memory of Sandra A group of Keynsham cricketers has raised more than £6,800 to fight pancreatic cancer in memory of the mother of two of their teammates. Seventeen members of Keynsham Cricket Club ran the Bath Half Marathon on March 13, aiming to raise as much money as they could for Pancreatic Cancer Action. Richard and Alex Wilton’s mother Sandra passed away in July last year just six weeks after being diagnosed with the illness. The brothers’ friend Tom Bryan signed up for the half marathon and was quickly joined by other members of the team in a bid to raise awareness and support work towards earlier diagnosis of the cancer. Tom said: “I wanted to do something to help after the dreadful chain of events which led to Sandra's passing, a half marathon was not something I, or most of the runners, had

Keynsham Cricket Club members after the race, left; Sandra Wilton, above done before and it was the easy and obvious choice to run for Pancreatic Cancer Action. “As well as running the Bath Half Marathon, team member James Ricci ran a successful race night at the Cricket Club, which raised over £600, and it just went from strength to strength. Everyone was keen to help out, and it showed a real

sense of community spirit and willingness from everyone, from the runners to all the kind people who donated.” All runners crossed the finish line and, in total, the team has collected £6,815 for Pancreatic Cancer Action and Ali Stunt, pancreatic cancer survivor and founder of the charity, said: “We are delighted that members

of the Keynsham Cricket Club are giving their time to support Pancreatic Cancer Action. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of people like this to help us continue our vital work.” People can still donate to the cause at the group’s fundraising page: http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/KPCA

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Spring walks

Members of the society have recently enjoyed two guided walks, on very different themes. The first, in late April, was a tour of the historic hill-top town of Malmesbury in Wiltshire, which vies with Barnstaple for the title of England’s oldest borough. With rivers on three sides the site was an obvious one for a fort from the earliest times before it grew into a major town in the Saxon period. The remains of the abbey, founded in the 12th century, that we see today are only one third of the original structure which, with its spire rising to over 400 feet, must have made a magnificent sight on the skyline. Unlike Keynsham, the town was not on any main routes and hence has experienced little redevelopment over the last few hundred years, meaning that it

retains the old street plan and many fascinating buildings. Last month’s walk was a tour of part of central Bristol, to discover the buildings that link the city to the slave trade and its eventual abolition. The status and success of the various merchants, businessmen and professionals involved was reflected in the houses they built and their locations. The tour took us from M-shed along to Redcliffe Parade and to some curious survivors in Guinea Street – a name of west African origin – and to Queen Square, once the city’s top address, where we heard about some of its more eminent residents. There is a lot of history in the buildings of central Bristol and our interesting visit showed just one aspect of this; one that until recently has been rather hidden.

Keynsham’s last blacksmith

It is 50 years since Bob Trott, the last blacksmith to work in Keynsham, retired from his forge at the top of Woodbine Steps (next to the New Inn). He was a well-liked and jovial man and was always happy to have an audience while he

worked. Children used to stand in awe of him as he worked the bellows under his arm while heating the iron bars to the correct temperature. As a farrier, he shod horses of many different breeds, including the local cart-horses. The owners would bring their horses to the smithy, which had a distinctive smell of burnt hoof while he was shoeing them. In his other role as a blacksmith, Mr Trott was skilled at creating ornamental wrought iron work for gates and fences to suit the buyer’s requirements; he also made and fitted the steel rims for cart-wheels. Changing times meant that the demand for his work declined and in 1966 one of the town’s characters decided to call it a day. After he stopped working, Mr Trott lived only another two years before he died at the early age of 52.

Battling elements at Community Farm!

We’ve had a topsy turvy season over winter and spring, with mild weather right into December followed by an unseasonably cold March and April, writes a Keynsham Farmers’ Market spokesperson. How has this temperate climate affected the crops of our dedicated farmers who grow the food we eat? We spoke to the team at The Community Farm, near Chew Magna, who gave us some insight into the challenges: the main crops affected were the brassica family (kale in particular), which unless we have a proper frost do not grow as well and get damaged easily, becoming more susceptible to mould and fungus. So in the months when yield expectation was high, there were fewer cabbages, kale and broccoli. However, the cold snap later on in the winter (finally in February to March) really helped vegetables such as purple sprouting broccoli.

Returns to Bristol Hippodrome for the first time in 15 years To meet these challenges for their other crops the Community Farm has installed three polytunnels for produce such as their mixed leaves so that whatever the weather, they are guaranteed a good yield. Salad items (all variations of lettuces and leaves/cucumbers/tomatoes) traditionally offer good profit margins so these are the vegetables you’d want to grow plenty of. With plans to install a fourth polytunnel in the near future, hopefully they will be able to grow even more of these lovely vegetables, and they will have the guarantee that under such protection they will avoid the unpredictability of the good old British weather! Find them at Keynsham Farmers’ Market on June 11.

Taking Time You can give away your money and replace it by earning more, you can give away possessions and purchase replacements but the one thing we can’t ever replace or gain more of is time. Time is the most precious “thing” that any of us will ever possess, so why is it we waste it or give it up to others without a single thought for ourselves? Whoa! Wait a minute. That sounds a little selfish doesn’t it? Am I encouraging you to stop giving your time and attention to others? No, not at all, but let’s look at those comparisons again. If I want to give away money, I must first have money myself and be able to retain at least enough to survive in order to make more – even if I only give it away again. How often do you hear yourself thinking or saying “I just haven’t got time for that” or “there are never enough hours in the day”? Sound familiar? Don’t worry if it does, you’re not to blame, it’s just the culture we live in that demands more and more of us in our working life, social circles and relationships. Everyone wants a piece of you and everyone wants to be the priority. The answer? Think about and look after YOU! demand more time than you are paid for, your social life may be demanding beyond enjoyment, but you deserve to spend some of your time (and yes money if necessary) on YOU. I hear you asking, “But where do I find the time?” You make it! I work an average 11-hour day, but I make sure that I make time to swim every weekday morning before work, even if it means I have to get up early and be in the pool by 8am. That’s MY time, and having had my enjoyment, I approach the day willing to give others what remains of my day. Recently I found that I was working too hard and recognised I needed a break, so I found myself a course on painting with acrylics and now spend three hours a week with the lovely Art Group in Queen Charlton. I do so with no guilt as I know I am

performing better at work and at home as a result of a bit of “me time”. Whether it’s a hobby, a walk, a massage (at The Beehive, of course) or any other form of distraction or pampering, if we give ourselves time, we are far more likely and willing to give our time to others. What happens to our other commitments in the meantime? Don’t they stack up? Surprisingly, no. It has been proven time and again that those who afford themselves some time and space regularly out-perform their “busy” colleagues. They have more energy, focus and yes, time to concentrate and work harder to the mutual benefit of all. What time do you spend solely on YOU during your week? Maybe it’s TIME for a change?

Other attractions include children’s sports, birds of prey, Shaolin Wushu, Justine Garner Dancers, a flower, vegetable and crafts show, bar, tea tent and stalls. For more details, including booking a stall or volunteering at the event, visit www.whitchurchparishcouncil.co.uk

June, 2016

Thought for the Month with Fr Tibor Szende of St Dunstan’s Catholic Church, Keynsham The anniversary of the terrible Battle of the Somme is here again, calling on us to think about peace; to make peace by offering or accepting peace; to meditate on peace and seek the truth about where we stand with peace. We could ask for example, am I at peace with myself, with God, with my neighbour? Is there peace in my heart or is it filled with dissatisfaction, resentment, anger or war? The saying goes that charity starts at home. Peace also starts at home and world peace begins in our heart. We are used to seeing images of conflicts and wars on television. We say that the world seems less safe now than in the Cold War years. We have escaped the big stick of the threat of nuclear war between two superpowers but have to fear the many small sticks of terrorist attacks from almost anywhere. How long will this go on? Are we disinterested in peace? Many of us say: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if war and terrorist attacks were no longer hanging over our heads? If young and old could walk anywhere, anytime without

fear of being mugged, shot or blown up? If people who say: you could build a school for the price of a jetfighter would have their way and the money spent on armaments now would be spent on improving the human condition. If the thousand billion pounds spent on military purposes around the world would be redirected, famine, homelessness, the lack of healthcare and education could be eliminated everywhere without any of us giving up a single penny. What is required to achieve this is not just a political change at government level but a spiritual change at our own level. We all need to strive to reach a state of being when we can honestly say that there is perfect peace within us, in our hearts and in our minds; that we are not in conflict with anything or anybody. We need to desire, hope and pray for that peace which is far beyond a mere absence of strife or the sense of well-being that flows from good health, financial security and success in the world. It is the peace that St Paul described as the Peace of Christ that is beyond all understanding.

Frys bowlers fourth following promotion

Wellsway Hawks swoop to victory After finishing second in 2015, Wellsway Hawks won 20 out of 22 games to become Bristol & District Short Mat Bowls 2016 League Champions, with two games in hand, writes our correspondent. Wellsway Bowling Club’s other two teams, the Harriers and the Tornadoes, came fifth and seventh out of a 12-team league. Following on from the success at Wellsway School Sports Centre, the club now has another venue at the Scout Hut, in Ashton Way, and is welcoming new members of any age, gender or level of experience. Join the group on Thursday afternoons from 1.154.15pm. Equipment is provided and coaching is available. The first 20 new members will be offered free membership. For more information, call Dave Sawyer on 01225 872780 or just call in to the Scout Hut on a Thursday afternoon.

Frys Bowling Club started their Bristol and District League Division 2 season following promotion with a win when they visited Avonvale, with just millimetres in the final shot making the score Frys 43, Avonvale 42. This was followed by a trip to Olveston for the first round of the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey Cup, where the hosts claimed a resounding victory with a score of 93-54. Frys then suffered another away game defeat in their league campaign at Knowle A, with a final score of 57-34 on May 5. A second visit to Olveston on May 10 for the first round of the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy again ended with a win for the hosts, 53-35. The fourth game in the league season saw Frys travel to Redland Green on May 19 for a game that tested the nerves until the end, but which ended in a 47-41 win for Frys, leaving them fourth in the league table.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field After their most successful season for several years, Keynsham Town held their annual awards ceremony on Saturday, May 14. Earlier that afternoon, the club’s Reserve Team secured their position in the Somerset County League Division One East after a testing season with a fine 4-1 away win at previously unbeaten champions Shepton Mallet Reserves. Pat Davison (2), Kyle Box and an own goal gave the Ks a deserved victory. As far as the awards were concerned, the following players were rewarded for their sterling efforts this season for the club’s four senior teams: First Team l Manager’s Player of the Year Mike Preedy

l Players’ Player of the Year Nathan Curnock, pictured above Reserve Team l Manager’s Player Of The Year Ben Nicholls l Players’ Player Of The Year Josh Bruton “A” Team l Manager’s Player Of The Year Lewis Brodie l Players’ Player Of The Year James Ollis Under-18 Team l Manager’s Player Of The Year Josh Seeley l Players’ Player Of The Year Cameron Shorney The club’s Golden Boot Award was shared between Pat Davison and Ben Harris.

Brian Sealy, who will step down from the Under-18s management role next season, received a glass tankard for the excellent job he has done for the last six seasons. Several of the players under his tutelage are now regulars in the First Team and he will be a hard act to follow for new boss Sam Clifton. Brian will, however, continue to run the club’s “A” Team in the Bristol & Suburban League next season. Two more special awards were presented. Firstly, club captain Rob Sheriton reached the fantastic milestone of 250 starting appearances for the Ks this season. Rob has played for the club for over 10 years and his record reads 258 starts, 16 substitute appearances and 23 goals. Pat Davison also reached a milestone in the 3-2 win over Radstock Town in March, when he scored his 49th and 50th goals for the club. Pat has been with the Ks since he was a nipper and received an award in front of his very proud dad, Ric, who is well-known around Keynsham and a key figure on the club’s committee.

Team’s new kits next season. We will also be welcoming a new sponsor for the Reserve Team to the club, CM Drylining, who again are buying a brand new kit. “Finally a deal which will bring in much-needed funds to the club has been signed with Dribuild, another local company. One of the company directors is Dave Kipling, whose son Sam has come through the ranks and is now a First Team regular. “In a similar way to their deals with Bristol City & Rovers, part of the deal will see the stand at Crown Fields being named The Dribuild Stand from the start of next season. “In times of rising running costs, sponsorship both from companies and individuals alike is the lifeblood of a club like Keynsham Town and these deals are massive in helping our club survive and hopefully prosper.”
