Hundreds back woodland being Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for the sale of a patch of woodland on Bath Road at Keynsham to be halted. The plans to sell off the land for development came to light when a notice declaring the site would be auctioned by Savills in London was put up nearby last month. Snapdragons Nursery, which is based in the neighbouring Ellsbridge House, has been leading objections to the sell-off and set up the petition online, which had gathered almost 740 signatures at the time of going to print. Snapdragons bosses have raised concerns over the safety of the children they care for as access to the woodland can only be gained across the nursery’s driveway. A statement with the petition on change.org explains: “The boundary of the land is directly on the left of our driveway and any new owner would have right of access across the drive and need to share the entrance, something which would compromise the safety of all who use it. Nursery bosses added that

they fear the land could be developed for commercial use, resulting in lorries coming onto the site. Snapdragons owner Rosemary Collard has previously told Bath and North East Somerset Council the nursery would like to purchase the land and allow the children to use the woodland, saving it from being developed. A spokesperson told Keynshamvoice: “What we want to do is preserve it for the use of our children and other children in the area so as not to lose any more woodland on the gateway to Keynsham. Following the appearance of the notice last month, the woodland was withdrawn from the auction on February 17 and now Snapdragons and their supporters are hoping to see it permanently removed and kept as a natural space. In 2012, the site was put forward by B&NES Council as a potential location for a travellers’ site, which was met with strong opposition locally and the the woodland was eventually withdrawn from the process.

Talks continue over crossings Local councillors say discussions are still ongoing over plans for pedestrian crossings in Keynsham town centre. Councillors Alan Hale and Charles Gerrish have been meeting with the Market Walk development team to raise residents’ concerns and suggest changes to the plans. Mr Hale said they are continuing to push for the “courtesy crossing” on Temple Street near the entrance to the library to be made a pedestrian controlled crossing. He has also suggested that a temporary barrier at the top of Bath Hill that has created a refuge in the middle of the road that pedestrians use to cross should be made a permanent feature. Current proposals are for pedestrian controlled crossings on Rock Road, by the fire station on Temple Street and on Bath Hill near the entrance to the Memorial Park.

he news that matters most to us is often not what’s happening in our part of the country or even in our city. It’s the issues and events that are happening in our own community, involving the people we know and the places we spend most of our time. In this first edition of Keynsham Voice, you’ll find contributions from schools, sports clubs, community groups, local leaders, businesses and individuals. These people and organisations all have one thing in common – Keynsham. Our aim is to provide a means for the community to talk about the issues affecting their town, publicise events, celebrate successes and share views. We hope you will join the conversation. Coverage of the skate park lighting campaign in April 2012

Young people in Keynsham are being asked for their views on lighting at the town’s skate park and whether a funding pot of thousands of pounds should go towards improving it. The informal consultation follows a campaign three years ago by members of Timeout youth group calling for new lighting to enable them to use the site in the Memorial Park later into the evenings. A petition with 300 signatures was handed to Keynsham Town Council backing the call in May 2012 and councillors agreed to look into costs of installing lights. Speaking at the time, campaigner Callum Lee, then 13, said: “Everyone seems to think it’s a good idea, including people from school and older people.” Funding, however, proved to be the issue and the request has been on the back burner ever since.

Now developer Taylor Wimpey has handed £36,655.31 to spend on youth services in the town to Bath and North East Somerset Council as part of the agreement struck when it was given permission to build on the K2 site – now The Meadows. At their meeting on February 17, town councillors unanimously agreed to go ahead with getting quotes for lighting and draw up a planning application. Councillors are now calling for views from the public – particularly young people who use the skate park – and have put the issue to the town’s youth council KeynshamNow for discussion. Comments can be made to the council at townclerk@keynshamtc.gov.uk, on 0117 986 8683 or delivered to the council’s offices at 15-17 Temple Street. Keynsham’s skate park was opened in 2010 after a campaign by members of Timeout.

PCC hears road safety concerns ‘loud and clear’ Avon and Somerset’s Police and Crime Commissioner says she has received the message “loud and clear” that road safety is of great concern for local people after a meeting in Keynsham. Sue Mountstevens was joined by Area Commander Chief Superintendent Caroline Peters at a public forum held at Keynsham Methodist Church on February 5. Around 30 residents attended the event to put their questions to the two police representatives, a number of which focused on problems on the roads. Among the concerns raised were heavy good lorries and speeding on the Wellsway and dangerous driving on the ring road at Hicks Gate. The area commander said the force had developed a road safety plan to tackle such problems, which could see targeted police operations or reviews of road designs.

Sue Mountstevens said: “I am really grateful to all those who attended our latest Keynsham public forum. I want to be open and honest with local people about how the policing service is changing and these forums give me the opportunity to do so. “It is only by hosting these meetings that I can hear from local people and do something

about their concerns. I have received the message loud and clear that road safety is something residents are incredibly passionate about and I will continue to work with the police to ensure these issues are being addressed.” Other topics discussed included PCSOs, sharing services with neighbouring forces and the use of Tasers. Residents heard from the PCC on this year’s planned budget proposals, the Police and Crime Plan priorities, ways of getting involved with local policing and wider commissioning work. A recording of the meeting and notes from the event are available at www. avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk The next PCC police public forum will take place in North Somerset at a location to be announced on Thursday, March 26.

29 speed cameras going live again The speed camera on Bath Hill at Saltford has been switched back on for the first time since 2011. It was the first of 29 speed cameras across the Avon and Somerset Police area that will be reactivated over the coming weeks and months. The cameras include one other in B&NES, on the A37 at Pensford, six in Somerset, 11 in South Gloucestershire, one in North Somerset and nine in Bristol, including a number on the A4 Bath Road. The locations are available on the Avon and Somerset website but the dates the cameras are reactivated will not be publicised. Avon and Somerset Police’s Road Safety Superintendent Richard Corrigan said: “Our message is loud and clear – drivers should assume that all roadside fixed cameras are now operational and to drive accordingly. “Drivers who choose to exceed the speed limit can expect to be caught and prosecuted if you exceed the legal speed limit.”

Chance to view K4 masterplan

Harvey’s Law – have you signed the petition yet? We often talk about the importance of microchipping your pet or making sure they have a form of identification; it’s something we, as a veterinary group, are very passionate about due to the number of lost pets that arrive on our doorstep. However, even that is sometimes not enough. You may have heard of the recent petition known as Harvey’s Law. The petition was created by Jude Devines from Sheffield, after her beloved dog Harvey was knocked down and killed on the M62 after escaping from a friend’s house. Although Harvey was identichipped and wearing a collar and tag, it took the family 13 weeks and £8,000 to find out his fate. At present the Highways Agency does not have a compulsory protocol in place to scan domestic animals or inform owners if their beloved pet is a road fatality. Ms Devines is calling on the Department of Transport to enforce sufficient protocols, including scanning animals retrieved from highways and logging formal reports to be communicated to local police and dog wardens instead of just needlessly disposing of the bodies.

If the worst were to happen, wouldn’t you like to know what had happened to your pet? Although it would still be heartbreaking, we can only hope that it would help to give pet owners a form of closure by knowing what has happened to their furry family member. If you’d like to show your support to the cause, why not sign the e-petition online to help Harvey’s Law be considered. If a lost pet (alive or otherwise) is brought into Keynsham Veterinary Centre, we will always scan the animal for a microchip and make every effort to help reunite them with their family. It will soon be a legal requirement to microchip your dog; we are offering free microchipping for all dogs until March 31, 2015, so don’t miss out. Book your dog in now on 0117 986 7700.

Keynsham residents are being invited to take a look at plans for the site known as K4 in the very earliest stages at an event this month. Developers Bloor Homes and Persimmon Homes are currently preparing plans for around 200 homes on land to the south-west of the town bordered by Charlton Road, Parkhouse Lane and Abbotts Wood. The firms are now working on a masterplan for the site before they submit any planning applications and residents will be able to view the scheme so far on Monday, March 9, at a “site masterplanning exhibition. Mark Crosby, of Consensus Communications, said that the exhibition will provide residents with an early insight into the planning process. He added: “A masterplan begins by exploring the technical and planning principles that will guide and

The site from Charlton Road inform how the site can be designed and laid-out. It does not deal with matters of detail – they come later in the design process. Once the masterplan is completed, it will be examined by Bath & North East Somerset Council and, following any revisions, will then act as a blueprint for future planning applications. The land has been earmarked for housing development in the council’s core strategy. The exhibition is being held on March 9, from 2.30-7.30pm, at the Community Space in Keynsham Civic Centre.

Station funding agreed in vote Campaigners supporting a railway station for Saltford have said the decision by councillors to agree Bath and North East Somerset Council’s 2015/16 Budget marks another step forward in their battle. The authority’s spending proposals for the next financial year included £250,000 for feasibility work into reopening the village’s station and this was given the green light on February 17. The money will help develop a business case for reopening a station and pinpoint the best location. The original railway station at Saltford was in use for 130 years before its closure in January 1970. The Saltford Environment Group (SEG), which backs the Saltford Station Campaign, has been creating an archive of historic images and news cuttings to celebrate the role the

Witness appeal after collision Two people are still in a serious condition after the car they were travelling in struck a wall in St Ladoc Road. Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident on Sunday, February 8, at around 6am near the street’s junction with Bristol Road to contact them. Emergency services called to the scene reported the car appeared to have collided with a roadside wall, leaving the vehicle on the pavement and the two occupants – a male driver and female passenger – trapped inside. They were freed from the vehicle and taken to Southmead Hospital. A police spokesperson said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to help our inquiries. If you are able to help, contact the collision investigation unit on the force number 101.

Resident calls for action on traffic in Park Road A resident who has lived near Park Road in Keynsham for more than 40 years says traffic calming measures are urgently needed to prevent it becoming a dangerous “rat run. He says he has witnessed five accidents in just three months, including one incident in February in which a car went through a neighbour’s wall, which he photographed. He told Keynshamvoice that he believes many drivers flout the 20mph speed limit along a narrow stretch near the junction with Windsor Avenue where parked cars make it difficult for drivers to pull into the kerb and a bus stop is also sited. The road surface had been “breaking down with increased traffic to the K2 site, he added. He told Keynshamvoice: “In my 40 years here I have never witnessed a single accident. Then recently there are five

move to the new houses it will become a rat run. Police and Bath and North East Somerset Council were unable to confirm whether incidents in Park Road had been reported to them as we went to print.

ÂŁ7,000 raised by road safety campaign Parents campaigning to improve safety on a route used by hundreds of schoolchildren in Keynsham have hit a fundraising target. Members of Chandag Road Safety Action Group have secured ÂŁ7,000 of donations from local firms and individuals,

which they hope will fund a permanent flashing speed limit sign near the entrance to Wellsway and Chandag schools. The group is in talks with the council and is still fundraising towards high-vis vests for parents to wear on the way to school as a reminder to drivers.

With planning permission granted for the Isambard Kingdom Brunel Studio School by B&NES Council, the project to build the new school in Keynsham can pick up speed. Staff and those students who have already been offered places at the school are watching the process unfold as the newest member of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, which already incorporates Wellsway School, The Sir Bernard Lovell School, Aspire Academy and The Bath Studio School, starts to take shape. Studio schools specialise in particular curricular areas with students at the IKB Studio School following a curriculum underpinned by science, technology, engineering and maths. As well as taking traditional courses in English, maths and the sciences students will be able to focus on courses in digital engineering,

College’s animal care site to close A Keynsham training centre for animal care will be closing as the result of a merger between two local colleges, it has been announced. Staff at Norton Radstock College and City of Bath College are currently being consulted on proposals to merge the two institutions, which will result in Norton Radstock’s equine and veterinary care centre in St Francis Road being shut. All animal care courses will be centralised at the Radstock site to help “rejuvenate and reinvigorate” the campus, said a spokesperson. Norton Radstock College first opened a learning centre in Keynsham in 1993, providing a range of community education courses from Ellsbridge House

on Bath Road. In 2001, it built a sixth form centre in the grounds of what was then Broadlands School, while its animal care courses all moved from Radstock to Ellsbridge House. This specialist Animal Care Study Centre was officially opened by children's author Dick King Smith. In 2011, however, the college sold Ellsbridge House and equine and veterinary nursing moved to the Broadlands site in St Francis Road while all other animal care courses moved back to Radstock. The merger follows Norton Radstock College’s “inadequate” rating from Ofsted. Redundancies as part of the restructuring could affect 91 employees across a range of departments but 52 new posts will also be created, said the spokesperson.

 An apprentice bricklayer working at Keynsham’s The Meadows development has been rewarded for his hard work. Tom Young, 19, was named Bricklayer Apprentice of the Year

by local training and development partnership On Site Bristol, led by Bristol City Council. Tom is one of seven trade apprentices currently working with developer Taylor Wimpey.

Pupils go to the polls for youth council Pupils at Broadlands Academy have taken part in the first elections for KeynshamNow, voting for classmates to represent them on the new youth council. A total of 14 youngsters put themselves forward for the five places on the council, with pupils from Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10 elected when fellow students went to the ballot box. At Wellsway School there were five candidates – from Years 7, 8, 10 and 11 – who will each take a seat on the council, joining the existing officers. KeynshamNow was set up in September to give younger resi-

dents a voice and focus on issues such as crime and drugs. KeynshamNow administrator Andy Wait said: “I have been most impressed with the attitude of the Broadlands students to this election. They have produced election posters and thought about issues that are relevant to the young people of the town. The five successful candidates will join the nine co-opted members and the five candidates from Wellsway School.” Find out more about KeynshamNow on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @KeynshamN.

Corey accepts Santa Dash cash on behalf of event’s chosen charities Many of the people who helped the Saltford Santa Dash return last December gathered at a celebration to see the money raised handed over to two good causes. Supporters including local businesses and private sponsors as well as the many volunteers behind the event attended a presentation evening at Saltford Golf Club on February 26. Saltford teenager Corey Clifton accepted a cheque for £9,654 from Santa Dash representative Roger Spooner on behalf of Clic Sargent and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which both support youngsters with cancer. Mr Spooner thanked everyone for the funds, services and expertise that helped the dash, in which hundreds of runners dressed in Santa suits followed a route around the village, return for its second year.

Market looks for talented acts to entertain crowds Has Keynsham got talent? That's the question being asked by organisers of the town’s farmers’ market as they look for local acts to entertain shoppers. Buskers are being urged to get in touch with market managers to perform at the monthly event in its new location at Market Walk. Stallholders set up their familiar green and white striped canopies on the pedestrian area in front of the gold buildings of the Civic Centre for the first time in February – and the move has been hailed a success. A spokesperson for Somerset Farmers’ Markets said hundreds visited the new location on February 14, adding: “Feedback was that they were delighted by the new location, range of produce available and easy access to the car park and cashpoint machine. In fact, the only changes to be made for next month are widen-

ing the walkways between the rows of canopies to create more room for customers to browse. “New additions to the market included hot street food options with local chefs White Heat cooking up local pork belly and Little Jack Horner’s Gourmet hot sausage rolls – very popular on a chilly February day. “There is room to expand even more and create more of a

‘wow’ factor each month and attract more people into Keynsham to shop.” Any buskers who would like to be considered for a slot at Keynsham Farmers’ Market can get in touch on 01373 814646. The next market takes place on Saturday, March 14. For more information, visit www. somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk/ Keynsham.

Green space should be a blank canvas I wonder how much of the £30,000 Keynsham Memorial Park development plan is being allocated to the outdoor gym? I have asked and it will be interesting to hear the answer. Keynsham has indoor gyms at the leisure centre, Wellsway School and on Bath Hill. Nature already provides a “gym” and has done for the last hundred thousand years or so… so why try to better it? Surely this money would be better spent elsewhere in the park? Green space should be a blank canvas for everyone to enjoy – whether that’s the music festival; kids on bikes; kicking a ball; feeding squirrels; sunbathing; or families out

having picnics. Why would the council decide to spend a load of money on bringing the indoors outdoors? A better focus would be on improving existing, underutilised, disconnected or worn-out resources that already exist? The alternative options are almost endless. To me, this just looks like a blinkered and extravagant waste of money that is going to take a chunk out of the beautiful green space that makes the park so nice, and further neglect the features that brings people to it. Fry family deserve acknowledgement I refer to your article on Page 2 of February’s edition, “Medical centre still part of plan for Somerdale, says developer”. While it is right to acknowledge Cadbury’s, who were excellent employers until the demise of the factory, surely it would be more appropriate to acknowledge the founder fathers, the Frys. Most of us will remember it was this great family who not only brought chocolate manufacturing to our town, creating thousands of new long-term jobs, they

Restore town’s own ‘Hollywood’ sign When I was a lad growing up in Keynsham during the Thirties and Forties there was a sign emblazoned on the railway embankment, adjacent to the Crown Fields, some 10ft high and consisting of brilliant white stone lettering spelling out the name “SOMERDALE”. It was easily visible from the main A4 road to Bristol and was a familiar landmark. During the war it was covered over and camouflaged to prevent it being used by enemy aircraft as a marker. It was again concealed when Fry’s was taken over by Cadbury and so it remains to this day. However, if one looks closely at the embankment the letters can still be seen and the whole sign is clearly visible on the Google Earth website. As the Somerdale site is being redeveloped, would it not be a great restoration project for someone to resurrect this landmark and give Keynsham its own “Hollywood” sign ? Cyril Wiltshire

Nearby communities feel ‘second class’ I have read with interest (issue 35) about the forthcoming changes to the bus services and notice that a new service 16 will be introduced from Keynsham to Southmead Hospital as a sister service to the service 17 currently in existence via Longwell Green. As Longwell Green already has an hourly service, any resident from Oldland, Oldland Common or North Common will still have to change buses at Kingswood. This is not the best situation as it makes residents of this area feel like second-class citizens. We have lost two buses that served both Cossham and Frenchay, with the withdrawal of the 533 service and the closure of Frenchay. Surely somebody in authority should look at the larger picture for access to Southmead Hospital as we are all in the catchment area. Also, people in the above areas now have no bus service to Marks & Spencer and the other stores at Gallagher Park since the 533 ceased to run. M H Cornwell North Common

I am writing to add my views about the permanent closure of Ashton Way toilets. I am aware that the closure was discussed for a few weeks prior, but the realisation is far more complicated than all the parties concerned envisaged. The decision to close these toilets is totally detrimental in encouraging the growth of Keynsham retail, the disabled and the numerous bus drivers to whom it was a welcome stop! Can’t we find a use for Milward House? I find it quite ironic that there is a lack of new outlets in the new Civic Centre. Will they soon be filled by more charity shops, hair salons and coffee houses? There was uproar when a new up-andcoming photographic business wanted to relocate to Keynsham from Stockwood but was knocked back. There is a solution – Milward House, situated at the bottom end of the High Street. Milward House has been empty for years. If they can reopen the old Lloyds Bank as Grounded coffee shop and bistro then surely something can be done for Milward House. Details supplied

Worrying solution to parking problem I’m afraid, D O’Sullivan and Keith (Letters, February issue), that we all share your frustrations regarding the situation with parking in Keynsham and the fiasco that is the positioning of the traffic lights. Yes, it is a joke but we can expect nothing less from B&NES

when it comes to getting it right. With nine units still empty in Market Walk, I fear no one will come to Keynsham other than for a coffee and to visit a charity shop. If Keynsham cannot attract new business then the problem with parking will resolve itself! John Howlett Keynsham

Too many drivers put others in danger Answering Mr Mells’ letter in the February issue of Keynshamvoice, if he had read my letter correctly I never said about fencing off the new centre! Regarding the remark about negotiating roundabouts etc, I have been driving for some 56 years now and still class myself as a good driver, the trouble is too many drivers do not indicate as to where they intend to go which puts others in danger ie turning right into Charlton Road coming down the High Street. I think controlled crossings are a must – we should have more of them. D Woodham

Sports club hails the ‘power of the press’ Many thanks for running the article “Roll up and give sport a try for free. Town’s public toilets should be reopened With the closure of the public toilets in Ashton Way at Keynsham, the only ones remaining in the area are in the Memorial Park and the new toilets in the library. The ones that were in Ashton Way had facilities for the disabled and, although the others have these facilities, it is a great distance to travel from the Ashotn Way car park for those who have mobility problems. Some of the shops on the High Street have toilets but you usually have to buy goods to be able to use them. The powers that be are regenerating Keysham on a large scale so the community should benefit. This is just another reason why people might look elsewhere to do shopping. These toilets should be reinstated as soon as possible. D O’Sullivan

ÂŁ1,000 grant for therapy room A Keynsham charity that has created a therapy room for youngsters with autism has secured ÂŁ1,000 to go towards the project. Butterflies-Haven, which supports children and families living with autism, has been awarded the funding by Coventry Building Society from its community fund. It comes shortly after staff at the building society’s Keynsham branch handed over ÂŁ1,000 to the charity from cake sales, raffles and a book sale. The first donation went towards renting the new therapy space at the @One Centre and Butterflies-Haven founder Trisha Williams said the grant would be used in the same way. She said: “Personalised therapeutic approaches have already made a huge difference to some of our Young Voice children, helping with sleep disturbance, communication and building emotional connections with parents. This new aspect of our service is exciting and the rent for the room is fundamental to its success. We have created a very calming room that feels like a big warm hug.â€? Butterflies-Haven is also hoping to recruit more volunteers to help run its Step-Up youth group, which now has 19 members aged from 12 to 16. Trisha said: “The most essential quality a volunteer needs is to be a flexible thinker who can ‘go with the flow’. They need to be happy working with a flexible format rather than rigidly structured sessions.â€? Find out more at butterflies. haven@hotmail.com or call 0117 3290123.

Fry Club FC was ‘luckiest club’ to have chairman Alan at the helm Players, management and supporters alike at Fry Club FC are mourning the loss of former chairman Alan Taylor, who is credited with transforming the club’s approach to the game during his time in charge. Alan, a retired Avon and Somerset Police detective sergeant, spent more than 20 years working with the club, first as secretary between 1990 and 1999, then on the committee and finally as chairman from 2006 to 2012. He passed away aged 68 on Thursday, February 19. Alan was passionate about football, playing for Shirehampton and Port of Bristol as a boy, then for the police force in the Bristol and District League. He was a member of the Somerset Football Association and was a widely respected figure in the footballing community, said current Frys secretary Steve Curtis. “Without doubt, we are the luckiest club to have had him involved for the last 24 years, Steve said. “He could have gone anywhere. “His legacy is huge. Through the appointments he made at the club – putting the right pegs into the right holes – he has left us in a position to progress through the football pyramid, which he has driven and had the vision to do. Alan appointed current chairman Kevin Saunders as his vice-chairman, working with him for two seasons before stepping down, and handed the high-pressure role of first team

Alan Taylor, who was Fry Club FC chairman from 2006 to 2012 manager to Rob Mallett at the age of just 23. Rob said: “Alan realised the

club had got to the point where it wasn’t moving forward any more and realised something

needed to change, bringing in a fresh approach that has got us to where we are now. Kevin added: “He had the confidence to step down because he knew he had put the right people in the right roles. After leaving the post of chairman, Alan became a “full-time supporter, attending training days at the Somerdale ground as well as matches and was a familiar and reassuring sight in the crowd at away games for the players, said Rob. Just days after the news of Alan’s passing, the first team faced his old team and Somerset County League Premier Division leaders Shirehampton – and came away the winners. Steve said: “It would have been a proud moment for Alan, there was tangible emotion throughout the club and it gave everyone that little bit extra on the day. Alan was first brought to Frys by ex-Fry Club evening manager Pete Wilkins, who paid tribute to his friend of 50 years: “He will leave a huge void at the club. He had time for everybody, from the youngsters to pensioners, and will be sadly missed. People would confide in him and he was always ready to give some advice. Alan leaves behind his wife Lyn, son Richard, daughter Victoria and granddaughter Molly. His funeral was due to be held on Thursday, March 5, at Haycombe where members of Fry Club FC wore club colours in tribute.

I have the pleasure of writing my contribution this month from our new post in Keynsham Civic Centre. I’m really pleased that my team and I are here, nearer the heart of the town and working more closely with our colleagues from the council. We now have two enquiry officers attached to the team at the One Stop Shop, which is a real step forward for the service the constabulary provides to local communities. The police station at Bath Hill is still operational and contains our emergency response teams along with other staff. We recently hosted a visit from the Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens. Sue was in the area to lead a forum with members of the public.

with Sergeant Will Stephens Attendees were able to speak with her and with the area commander for the North East – Chief Superintendent Caroline Peters. I was present and it was very useful to hear the range of subjects and views which are of interest to our community. Part of the discussion included how the constabulary is changing to meet the needs of the area. Inside the constabulary, many of us are familiar with the new “operating model” – in essence the way in which we operate – and we are now very close to changing over to this new model. The changes being implemented are intended to ensure that we are available in the right place and at the right time to promptly attend calls you make to us. The beat team for Keynsham

will remain unchanged, albeit that we will be split across a wider range of shifts to mirror those shifts worked by our emergency response colleagues. This will allow us to respond to neighbourhood issues as they emerge and, where time allows, to support our colleagues where they find themselves unable to respond quickly enough to reported incidents. In recent contributions, I referred to the work the neighbourhood beat managers of my team have been doing with a number of anti-social behaviour hotspots. While there is always more to do with such situations, we’ve noticed a distinct decline in the number of reported incidents at these locations. One of those areas was Temple

Street car park where we were being informed that young people were gathering and causing widespread damage, painting graffiti on the walls and generally making a mess. Happily, as a result of the information we received from members of the community, we were able to target our staff there at key times. This approach resulted in us locating a number of people in the vicinity. Our work with these people and at the location continues but we have already seen a reduction in the issues at the car park. I’m off now to attend a domestic incident in support of a colleague from Response so I’d better end here. I hope you have a pleasant and productive month.

Home care for independent living Sometimes a little extra help is all we need to remain living independently at home and in the local community, it’s where we want to be after all. That’s why Goldcare Professionals provides short term and long term home care and support services for adults from the age of 18 up to the age of 65 and above. We help people recovering from an operation, people with disabilities, sensory impairment, dementia or learning difficulties and the elderly who just need an occasional helping hand. Working closely with our clients, their family and friends, we create person-centred care plans delivering services that take into account habits and health, routine and personal preferences. All on track for station to look its best for third year in competition Keynsham Station has been given a spring clean by a team of volunteers, who spent a day clearing rubbish and weeds and planting bulbs. The Friends of Keynsham Station – which includes members of Keynsham In Bloom and the Severnside Community Rail Partnership – met on Saturday, February 28, armed with litter pickers and black bags to get the area looking tidy. Spring flowers in troughs are currently lining the platform, ahead of Keynsham in Bloom’s plans to create colourful floral displays for South West in Bloom’s It’s Your Neighbourhood competition. Besides the planters, flowerbeds and art displays, a bank at the side of Platform 1 and its new access ramp will be planted with wild flower seeds. Heather Cullimore, of Severnside Community Rail Partner-

Volunteers from the Friends of Keynsham Station giving the platforms and surrounding areas a tidy-up ship, said it would be the third year the station had entered the South West in Bloom category and would be aiming for a Level 4 after being awarded Level 3 last year. She said: “The contest is about the cleaning up and greening up of the local environment and taking ownership. This is

hugely important and we’ve seen a decrease in crime statistics – particularly vandalism – at the station since the In Bloom group began giving attention to the station.” This month, the Keynsham In Bloom group will be holding its first AGM since becoming an independent community

group, rather than a council-run initiative, and the group's officers will be elected. The meeting on Wednesday, March 18, at 7.30pm, at Scout HQ in Ashton Way, is open to all, with new members welcome. Community groups that work with Keynsham in Bloom are also invited.

Jacqui ditches day job for dog walking Although Jacqui Drago’s first job was cleaning out kennels as a teenager, the busy mum’s career took her in a different direction for the next 30 years. Now she has rediscovered her passion for working with animals, starting her own professional dog-walking business covering Saltford, Keynsham and surrounding areas. Just a few weeks since launching the venture she already has a large number of dogs on her books, taking them for exercise and play in the surrounding fields and woods. Jacqui said there seemed to be a real need for the service among people from a range of backgrounds. She said: “So many people have to work full-time nowadays but still want to own a dog so I’m there to help, taking them out every day. “People going on holiday don’t always want to put their dogs in kennels as they can get unsettled so I take them out several times a day and send updates and photos to the own-

News Sales executive Marianne with Joe and Sue Kearns at Somerdale

Joe’s first through door at Somerdale A former Cadbury factory employee is among the first people to be settling into their new homes at Somerdale. Former engineering buyer Joe Kearns, 74, and his wife Sue were the first buyers at the site after selling their house in preparation for securing a property at the new development, where hundreds of homes, a new school and Fry Club are part of the transformation. Joe said: “As soon as we heard the site was being developed we knew we wanted to live there. We sold our house and moved into a rented property – we knew we needed to get out of the chain

and this way we had the money ready for when Somerdale went on sale. “On the day they opened the sales office we made sure we were waiting outside – we knew exactly what we wanted so we just walked in and paid our deposit!” Part of the scheme, by Taylor Wimpey, will also see the factory buildings converted for employment use, apartments and, if a planning application by MF Freeman is given the go-ahead, a 135-bed care home. The bid is currently being considered by Bath and North East Somerset Council.

Villagers hitch a ride on a tractor for annual tidy-up by Ros Anstey Villagers once again took part in the annual village clean-up in Compton Dando and the surrounding villages, going round the country lanes tidying up the hedgerows and gateways. Armed with pickers and decked out in yellow reflective jackets they were soon on their way as they climbed aboard Gary Pearce and Simon Kinnersley’s tractors, to be dropped off at various points. There was also a “taxi service” from Peter Middleton and Chris Daubney. Organiser Harriette Dottridge said: “We had a good morning’s work cleaning up the lanes around Compton Dando. “Despite the initial freezing fog it cleared and we had glorious sunshine, which enabled us to get all the cans and rubbish out of the hedges. There were about 25 of us in all with 16 staying for lunch afterwards.

Villagers ready to board the tractors and trailers to start the clean-up “Thank you to everyone who tipped up and the tractor and trailer owners who not only delivered us to far-flung points but worked their way back and forth collecting the bags we filled. “As last year there was less rubbish than we have been used to, but we put this down to eve-

ryone being more vigilant during the year and prompt reporting to the excellent staff of B&NES who respond and clear up quickly. “B&NES lent us gloves, litter picks and bags and cleared up everything today, so a big thank you to them as well.”

by Ros Anstey After a series of successful craft days in Compton Dando, and a well-supported craft day and sale held before Christmas, local crafters held another event at the village hall. It proved to be an enjoyable day for everyone with lots of activities for children and adults. Children tried felting, drop spindle spinning, cord making, making key rings with dried flowers and watched the adults flower arranging, lace making, Dorset button creating, crocheting, spinning, beading and card making. Organiser Harriette Dottridge said: “We had around 23 visitors, some taking advantage of halfterm and coming from Paulton, Bishop Sutton and Cheltenham. “The homemade bread and soup were very much enjoyed and a profit of ÂŁ40 was made for the Compton Dando Community Association (CDCA), from this

Joseph, 11, and Charlie, eight, with their creations and the previous weekend’s litter pick lunch. Mrs Dottridge added: “We are delighted to be using the newly refurbished Compton Dando Parish Hall for our craft day, sharing our skills and hobbies with friends and visitors. “Each time we hold a craft day we have new people and are building our group so that more people can come and enjoy making things together.

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham March 1 marks the beginning of “meteorological spring and even if it’s still freezing outside, the longer days turn our thoughts towards renewal and regeneration. This is the first of a series of regular columns in Keynshamvoice by Transition Keynsham. We’re part of a global network of communities that are getting together to help their neighbourhoods become stronger and happier. Around the world Transition towns (and villages and cities) are running projects in food, transport, education, energy, the arts and housing – and they’re all community-led responses to the global challenges of climate change, economic hardship and diminishing supplies of cheap energy. Here in Keynsham we’re

working to make our town a better place to live in a number of ways. Our Wombles are picking up litter; our food group’s growing veg in Memorial Park; our Caterpillars are hosting children’s outdoor play sessions; our “stitch and bitch sessions are sharing craft skills; and our energy group’s about to launch Keynsham’s very own

community energy company (watch this space!). We’re inspired by other Transition Towns across the UK. They’re planting trees, setting up social enterprises, sharing skills, showing films, developing sustainable transport, setting up community farms and a whole host of other exciting and creative projects. One of Keynsham’s real

strengths lies in its community roots. We’ve got a vibrant community network from the WI to Community @67, from the Rotary Club to the Foodbank, and our thriving churches. As the town grows, we need to make sure those roots spread and anchor new residents to our town, so that they can share our sense of belonging. As we celebrate the promise of spring and shake off winter’s lethargy, why don’t you join us on our journey towards a healthier, happier community? Find out what we’re up to on our website www. transitionkeynsham.org or stop by at our regular Farmers Market stall. Better still, come and join our next Womble event on Saturday, March 7, from 2pm to 4pm, meeting at Waitrose.

Race night a success after raising £3,500 A charity race night held in Keynsham has raised thousands of pounds to help those living with kidney disease. Besides the racing, there was also an auction and raffle during the evening at the Royal British Legion in Charlton Road on February 28. Organisers Ronnie Kendrick, Linda Crowley, Wendy Gregory and Jane Collins said the event was well supported and raised £3,500 for the British Kidney Pa-

tient Association. Donations after the event were expected to bring the total to around £4,000. Linda Crowley said on behalf of the organising team: “We would like to thank all those people who supported the event and those who provided the auction and raffle prizes, along with special thanks to the Royal British Legion for allowing us to use the function room and to Wish Tree Wedding for the table decorations.”

Harry Pople running the Bath Half Marathon in 2013

T: 0117 908 2121

Marathon effort takes Harry from Bath to Madrid A former Wellsway School student will be running his first marathon in the heat of Madrid to help support young people with cancer. Harry Pople, 21, will be raising money for Clic Sargent when he takes to the streets of Spain’s capital on April 26, where he says the weather will be one of the main things on his mind. Harry is no stranger to long-distance running, however, having completed the Bristol and Bath half marathons in 2013 and this month’s Bath half on March 1, which he ran in one hour 27 minutes. He will be running the Spanish event with his former housemate from Reading University and said: “As Will has never previously done a marathon before either, our main aim is to simply finish the race. “However, we would certainly like to aim for somewhere between the three hours 15 minutes to four hours finishing time bracket. “The main thing that I am feeling nervous about is the possible heat or humidity that we may have to combat in Madrid. It will be another world compared to the British winter training conditions that I have been running in.” Harry, who read history at Reading and works for Royal London Platform Services in Bath, is a keen footballer, playing for Frys FC before moving away

to study and representing his university’s first XI. But he has a love-hate relationship with running, he admits. He said: “There are periods when I feel really motivated to go out and train, and other times where I like to take a break and pursue other hobbies. Once I have completed the marathon, it might be some time before I put my running shoes on!” Harry and Will have been collecting sponsorship from family and friends and are aiming to raise £1,000 for Clic Sargent. Harry said: “Clic Sargent have in the past supported somebody very close to Will. Once I had researched for myself the work that Clic Sargent do in helping young people and their families that are afflicted by cancer, I was convinced that it was a more than worthwhile cause to run for. “As the countdown to the race gets closer, people in Keynsham may see me sporting my Clic Sargent T-shirt and fundraising tin!” To support Harry and Will’s fundraising, visit their JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving. com/williamcarlisle.

Nurse Ruby gets into character! Friends and family have helped a Saltford nurse smash her fundraising target – after she told them she would run the Bath Half Marathon dressed as Nineties TV character Mr Blobby if they all got behind her. Cheers of “Blobby, blobby, blobby” greeted Ruby NicholsonPallett, 24, who works at the RUH, at every stage of the 13.1mile course on Sunday, March 1. But the attention was gratefully received as it helped Ruby raise awareness of Eating Stones, a small charity set up by fellow nurse Christopher Ferry from Newcastle to provide a school, clinic and orphanage for 60 children in Nairobi, Kenya. Ruby said: “Although I’d never run for charity before, I’ve watched a few fun runs and the people in costume always get the biggest cheers along the way. Thinking that might be a way to raise awareness as well as funds

for a relatively small and lesserknown charity, I decided to up the stakes.” She appealed to friends, colleagues and relatives to help her reach £400, in return for which she would wear the inflatable pink suit. The morning of the race dawned and Ruby awoke to find her target had been surpassed, with nearly £500 in total, including Gift Aid. “When I saw how much people had donated I knew I had to do it. There was no question of walking or taking it easy either. I donned the costume and ran all the way.” Although she said the suit felt like “a big sweaty tent over my head”, Ruby finished the race in a respectable two hours, 10 minutes and 58 seconds. Find out more at www.eating stones.co.uk. Donations can also be made at Ruby’s fundraising page, uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ RubyNicholsonPallett.

Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group With the weather reasonable, 35 walkers, our best supported walk yet, took the train to Bradford-on-Avon for the choice of two walks around this picturesque town on Sunday, February 15. One was a canal side walk to Avoncliffe with time to look round the village and visit the local hostelry, the other a slightly hillier jaunt around the backstreets and pathways exploring the older, seldom seen Bradford. There was also time to walk around the town itself, before we headed back to Keynsham, more specifically to the Manor House Hotel, for a finger buffet (kindly sponsored by Chris Bollom of Simply Carpets, and Trevor Drury of Morecraft Drury), and a very sociable after-walk wind down. The Walkers Are Welcome group’s next walks are:

Join Players on musical trip through the decades Keynsham Parish Players are preparing to take audiences on a musical journey through the 20th century in their latest production. Time Pieces features songs and sketches representing each decade, starting with music hall from the turn of the century, travelling through the two world wars, to rock 'n' roll, the hippy Sixties and glam rock before ending on a high note in the Nineties, with plenty of opportunities for the audience to sing along. The show runs for three nights from March 19-21 at St John’s Parish Hall, with a matinee on Saturday, March 21. Keynsham Parish Players’ musical director is Owen Cole, who has many years’ experience directing shows, while producer Sue Sprague has been involved with the Players since their first performance in 1996, producing most of the shows since 2001.

Sue said: “We particularly wanted to remember the Great War following last year’s commemoration of its start in 1914 and this show gives us an opportunity to honour that memory alongside some more lighthearted and fun periods. She added: “We encourage new members at KPP and welcome all levels of talent and experience. We always try to make sure all members of the cast feel included and nobody is ‘not good enough’ for us – trust me!

Jessamine was selected by retail entrepreneur Theo as part of his Small Business Sunday initiative, in which he helps boost the profile of winners each week on Twitter and on his own website. Jessamine said: “Winning this award from Theo has given our business a real boost, by recognising the hardwork that has gone into building Little Pickles for the last four years and sharing the word with his following.

Car park to get charging point

Keynsham will soon be getting its first public charge point for electric vehicles. The unit will be installed in the Fox and Hounds car park in early 2015, following the unveiling of a new charge point in Midsomer Norton by Bath and North East Somerset Council in January. Other public charge points across Bath and North East Somerset include Odd Down and Lansdown Park and Ride sites, Charlotte Street car park in Bath and the University of Bath. Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Cllr Caroline Roberts (Lib Dem, Newbridge), said: “Electric vehicles are more environmentally-friendly than fossil fuel-based vehicles, so the council is pleased to be supporting the use of them through electric charging points. This is a definite bonus for air quality and we hope people will make the best possible use of them.

Music festival generates spending of £462,120, finds 2014 survey Photos: John Aldridge

Keynsham Music Festival generated spending in the local area to the tune of more than £460,000, an economic survey carried out at the event last year has found. The Audience Agency, an organisation employed nationwide to evaluate arts funding and spending, calculated that the economic activity generated in the town amounted to £462,120 – nearly eight times the cost of putting on the festival week, say organisers. The survey also found the event brought in £46,717 of “new” spending – money that wouldn’t have been spent locally had the festival not taken place. The results were music to organisers’ ears, with a spokesperson saying: “These figures compare very favourably with other UK festivals and will hopefully contribute an increased local support of the festival by funders and businesses.” Meanwhile, plans for this year’s Festival Week, from June 29 to July 5, are being drawn up to take advantage of the new open spaces created in Keynsham by the Market Walk development as well as The Community Space venue. Organisers are also looking at ways to make use of the festival facilities in the Memorial Park during the day on Saturday, opening up opportunities for performers who don't get a slot on the Sunday. A German dance troupe is already booked and other ideas include folk dance and music and a vintage vehicle display as well as the established

Gala Show on the evening. Sunday’s line-up is taking shape with both new and familiar faces booked. The spokesperson said: “The festival’s reputation continues to grow – not least among the musicians themselves. Among the comments last year was the manager of Australian band Bela Takes Chase, who said that Keynsham was their fourth festival of the weekend, and was both the best organised and the best hosted. That’s a massive thanks to the volunteers.” Organisers are hoping to increase the number of community groups taking part this year, and members of Butterflies-Haven will be taking to the stage as the Butterflies Voice choir. Suggestions, applications to volunteer or sponsor the event can be emailed to info@ keynshamfest.co.uk or in person at Keynsham Town Council’s offices at 15-17 Temple Street. Alzheimer’s and Dementia

In the United Kingdom, more than 820,000 people are living with dementia, says the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org). A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is life-changing for the person with the disease, as well as their family and friends, but information and support are available. No one has to face Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia alone. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, an overall term for conditions that occur when the brain no longer functions properly. It causes problems with memory, thinking and behaviour. In the early stages, dementia symptoms maybe minimal , but as the disease progresses causing more damage to the brain, symptoms worsen.

In the past three decades, dementia research has provided a much deeper understanding of how Alzheimer’s affects the brain. Today, researchers are continuing to look for more effective treatments and a cure, as well as ways to prevent Alzheimer’s and improve brain health.

Symptoms

Trouble with memory – specifically difficulty recalling information that has recently been learned – is often the first symptom of Alzheimer’s disease (short-term memory loss). Alzheimer’s disease and other

dementias cause memory loss and other symptoms serious enough to interfere with life on a day-to-day basis. In addition to memory loss symptoms of Alzheimer’s include:  Trouble completing tasks that were once easy  Difficulty solving problems  Changes in mood or personality; withdrawing from friends and family  Problems with communication, either written or spoken  Visual changes  Confusion about places, people and events

Diagnosis

There is not a simple test to tell if someone has Alzheimer’s. Diagnosis requires a medical evaluation, which may include:  Your family’s medical history  A neurological exam

 Cognitive test  Blood test  Brain imaging

Treatment and support

While there are currently no treatments available to slow or stop the brain damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease, several medications can temporarily help improve the symptoms of dementia for some people. In addition, having support systems in place can improve quality of life for both people with dementia and their families. Many resources are available to help explain what to expect and how to adapt during early, middle and late stage of the disease. Visit www.alzheimers.org. uk where there is information about services available in Bath and North and East Somerset.

In the Garden The first two weeks in February did absolutely nothing to persuade me to go into the garden. It was too cold to do any fiddly jobs, the frost kept me off the grass, and all was too gloomy. And then we had some slightly warm sunny days when the sun had some strength in it. Suitably encouraged and clothed, I went to the far end of the garden and checked on the shrubs. The large holly tree caught my eye and reminded me that I had promised to reduce its size. Cutting back a holly tree I found to be no easy job, keeping a regular shape and height. It required secateurs applied to each branch and twig, and a lot of patience.

After two days I had a smaller tree, three bags of very prickly cuttings and very sore arms! There seems to be strongly divided opinion as to whether one should keep paths, patio areas and pots cleaned off or allowed to become slightly shabby. I prefer the latter. My

former neighbour, a dear friend, preferred to keep the patio cleaned and bought a pressure cleaner for the purpose. It was offered to me several times, but recalling the amount of time he spent on it I declined. I always felt slightly guilty each time he used it, but I am quite satisfied with how our paths

look and blend in with the beds and borders. Treatment of wooden furniture also brings dispute. Mostly I think that good quality hardwood furniture will look after itself, while lesser quality goods seem to need some care and attention. No doubt the old saying “you get what you pay for” applies. March will bring some rain and gales but also those lovely spring flowers. Already the snowdrops, aconites, crocuses and early primroses have brought colour, and to follow are the bright yellow daffodils. Very soon plant out those hyacinths from the indoor pots into any spaces that show up, and check on the cyclamen and give them all a good feed. Deadhead as necessary and leave foliage to die away. Put up with the untidy look so that the vigour goes back into the bulb. Hopefully the mower has had a service, the secateurs and shears have been sharpened and oiled, and the spade and fork have been cleaned and you are all ready to start the cycle once again.

On the Plot March is the time to start sowing seeds on the vegetable plot but make sure your soil is ready first. If you dug your plot earlier then the surface of the soil should break up easily thanks to the rain and cold of recent months. If you have yet to dig the plot then do it as soon as possible. When there is a dry spell, using a rake or threepronged cultivator, break down the soil into a fine tilth and remove all the weeds. This will allow air into the soil and speed up the drying process. March sowings on the plot will include broad beans, leeks, carrots, parsnips as well as

shallot and onion sets. Later in the month Brussels sprouts, cabbage, peas and radishes can be sown. If you have access to a protected indoor area with a bit of heat e.g. greenhouse, cold frame or a windowsill, then you can also sow celery and lettuce as well as indoor and outdoor tomatoes. Sow the seeds into trays or recycled plant trays filled with good quality compost. Importantly, try to avoid using peat-based compost because

of the environmental damage caused by its extraction from peat bogs in the UK, Ireland and Europe. I use peat-free compost and find this is perfectly acceptable but the surface covering over the seeds needs sieving first. Keep the compost moist but not wet and be careful as plants can get spindly if left crowded and searching for the light, especially on a windowsill. So thin the seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Alternatively you can get a

43

head start with outdoor sowings if you prepare the ground first. Cover the area with cloches for a couple of weeks to help the soil warm up and allow some of the weed seeds to germinate. Before sowing remove the cloches then hoe the soil and get rid of the weed seedlings before sowing your vegetable seeds. Some gardeners chose to sow F1 seed varieties because they may be disease resistant. They are generally more expensive and if you choose to sow F1 seed varieties please note that any seed saved from these will not be true. Seed potatoes that have been “chitting” on the windowsill should soon be ready to plant. Sow first earlies at the end of March followed by second earlies then maincrop by midApril. Don’t be tempted to sow them too soon as the emerging growth can be damaged by late frosts. The spacing for earlies is about 12 inches with 15 for maincrop. Leave at least 24 inches between the rows then plant the potatoes about five inches deep with the shoots uppermost.

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Saltford ‘Death Penny’

After the end of the First World War in 1914, memorial plaques were issued to the next-of-kin of all service personnel who were killed as a result of the war. These were made of bronze and became known as “Death Pennies” because of their similarity to the smaller penny coin then in circulation. More than a million of the plaques were issued but most have been lost or discarded over the years and they are now quite unusual. Recently, the Local History Society was generously given the Memorial Plaque issued to the family of Private Edward Barnett, who is commemorated on the Saltford War Memorial. Private Barnett died in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the society’s military historian has found out as much as possible about the action in which he was killed.

Society chairman Richard Dyson said: “We are very pleased that a plaque relating to a local soldier has survived and has been donated so that it can be seen by the public.” The plaque was on show at the society’s stand at last month’s Beau Street Coin Hoard display and will be on view at the society’s next meeting on March 16.

No more buddling

At February’s evening meeting, society members and visitors heard local archaeologist and teacher Rachel Shaw speak about the history and archaeology of the Charterhouse area of Mendip. Using specimen historical characters, she described how the Romans had established a major leadmining centre there shortly after their conquest in 43 AD and the industry was revived in medieval and later in Victorian

times. Rachel explained the strange shapes and industrial relics that, much overgrown, can still be found. These include the circular depressions of the buddle pits, where the metallic ore was separated out, and the long masonry flues, where lead fumes were condensed and the solid residue was scraped off by child workers. It is hard to imagine the thriving industrial community that once existed in this remote spot but later in the year, Rachel will be leading society members on a field visit to explore the remains and visualize the past.

Keynsham in flood and snow

The display of historic photographs in the cabinets in the wall near the entrance to the library at the new Civic Centre has been changed by society member Don Ogg. If you were here during the flood of 1968 or

can recall the other extremes of weather that nature has thrown at Keynsham over the years then do call in – these pictures will jog your memory!

This month’s meeting

On Monday, March 16, the society’s speaker will be Peter Davey, whose subject will be the Clifton Rocks Railway. Peter is well known for his knowledge and television appearances on Bristol Trams, but is also chairman of the charity working to preserve and restore the Clifton Rocks Railway in Bristol. He will be telling us about the history of this hidden piece of Victorian engineering and recent discoveries that have added to the project. Visitors are welcome at the meeting, to be held at the Key Centre at Keynsham’s Victoria Methodist Church, starting at 7.30 pm.

Broken Thoughts

GWAAC’s Penny Smith with Pam Payne at Homeavon House

Residents get behind air ambulance Keynsham residents have used their regular bingo and fish and chip evenings to help a local charity. People living in the retirement flats at Homeavon House held raffles and auctions during their regular get-togethers in 2014, collecting a total of £610 during the year. The residents chose to donate the money to the Great Western

Air Ambulance Charity and representative Penny Smith received the cheque from Homeavon resident Pam Payne in February. The charity’s helicopter responds to medical emergencies across Bristol, B&NES, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Wiltshire and relies entirely on the support of the community to fund its operating costs.

Did I hear a soft voice calling Like whispers of a forgotten time I wonder if they truly listen and hear Why must everything be so confusing And yet our memories will last a lifetime As they linger always in our mind Words unspoken in hazy thoughts Through times when we often change We sometimes forget and lose touch But there is a spirit deep within me

There is something I have to tell you You have been a big part of my life Listen, if I recall broken thoughts A memory of the love we held, past It whispers me comfort Feelings flood my being unchallenged Now, as each day passes hurriedly by Memories of times we treasured, remain broken Trapped in a darkened corner of my mind Waiting for your return to unlock my thoughts John Howlett

Couple aiming to raise golf club’s game in the kitchen A Compton Dando couple have gone into business together to take up the catering franchise at Saltford Golf Club. Dan and Gemma Haywood have named their partnership Hayward’s Kitchen. Dan is a chef with 18 years of experience with Gemma as “front of house” including wedding planning. They will be catering for the day-to-day running of the busy golf club, including gourmet evenings, many private functions, parties and wedding receptions which are becoming very popular throughout the summer. A golf club spokesman said: “We firmly believe this is the way forward, a strategic partnership for the future, a realisation of our perception of being the areas number one golfing and events venue.” Dan trained as a chef at The Pump Room in Bath and his last position was at The Hare and Hounds in Lansdown. He has been married to Gemma for two years.

In Kanlungan, children are provided with necessary care, love, protection, rehabilitation and education. Driven by unity, love, respect and faith in God, Kanlungan helps improve the lives and opportunities of many less fortunate in the streets of Manila. A team from Keynsham parish churches is going to the Philippines for 10 days to serve alongside Kanlungan staff to minister to street children and their families. This is why it’s so important for us to go as well as serving where we are. of another culture the love of Christ is our response to Jesus’ affirmation to believers... Matthew 25:35 says: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in...” Some people may ask: “Why go there when there are needs here?” The answer is perhaps an

unexpected one. A woman living under a bridge with five children under four years old, including a two-day-old infant, once said to me on a previous trip: “When you come here to talk to us I know that we are not forgotten.” No government can ignore the plight of its poor when people from outside shine a light into the situation. This is why it’s so important for us to go as well as serving where we are. Our team of seven from 11 to 62 years old are immensely excited about serving the desperately poor on a short-term basis to achieve the long-term goal of changing people’s lives. Jesus said: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 We are going to do just that!

Age UK wants people with drive Age UK B&NES wants to hear from people who are interested in supporting older people and tackling the issues they face. The local independent charity, which works with and for older people across Bath and North East Somerset, needs new trustees to join its board. The charity supports around 12,000 older people, their families and carers every year, with essential services to promote a healthy, happy later life, and needs trustees to help guide it. The team is keen to hear from people from across the Bath and North East Somerset area, particularly those with some knowledge of the health and social care sector. Chair of the trustees board, Pam Richards, said: “We’re looking for people who have drive and ambition to help us respond to the increasing demands of providing services to older people. We need new trustees who can think creatively about how we can support older people and help us develop new ways of raising essential funds. “Experience of fundraising, events or running a business would be fantastic but what’s most important is passion, ideas, and good connections within your local community.” Trustees need to be available for four meetings a year and one or two workshops, as well as for occasional informal meetings. “We are very flexible and try to hold our meetings at times that suit the whole board – at the moment they are held at 4pm in Bath, but we are happy to look at different timings and locations,” says Pam Richards. “You may be employed, part-time employed or retired – whatever stage in life you are at we would like to hear from you. Just contact me or our chief executive Janet for an informal chat.” To find out more, contact Janet Dabbs or Pam Richards – email pam.richards97@ gmail.com or call 01225 427071 or email janet.dabbs@ageukbanes.co.uk or call 01225 466135 You can also find out more about the charity at the website www.ageukbanes.co.uk, and follow Age UK B&NES on Facebook and Twitter @AgeUKBathNES.

Driver Mark turns navigator in race Having lost his permanent navigator at the end of 2014, motorsport driver Mark Griffiths from Keynsham found himself having to form a new team for the first NavScatter of 2015 organised by Bristol Motor Club. He decided to take on navigation duties for Spence, a more experienced driver. Spence also provided a vehicle specially optimised for road rally events which, among other modifications, benefited from stiffened suspension and extra lighting. The combined 45 years’ experience of road navigation events and extensive knowledge of the Chew Valley area was evident as they quickly plotted a route and headed out, scoring a succession of checkpoints. As they concentrated their efforts in one area of the map they found themselves 20 minutes from the finish time having completed their planned route and exhausted their mapped checkpoints. Mindful of the hazards of the fast freezing lanes, some last-minute plotting and committed driving pulled in extra points for a very strong finish in second place. Mark said: “With Spence driving it made me realise I was driving too conservatively.” If you think motorsport might interest you, search for Bristol Motor Club on Facebook, Twitter or visit www.bristolmc.org.uk.

Sport February saw Keynsham Town’s First Team win 1 draw two and lose one of their four Toolstation Western League Division One games. The month started with a thrilling 1-1 draw at home to Corsham Town. The match was an end-to-end affair right from the off, with Keynsham looking more than a match for sixthplaced Corsham. However, the visitors looked to have taken the lead on 15 minutes, when Scott Brain’s headed clearance off the line appeared to hit the back stanchion of the goal before coming back into play. To the consternation of the Corsham players and fans, the assistant referee waved play on. The Ks tried to capitalise on this slice of luck, with Jordan Hawkins and Ben Harris both going close, but the match was goalless at half-time. The second half started in the same vein, with Pat Davison and top scorer Tom Morgan causing the visitors’ defence problems. However, with both goalkeepers in excellent form, it took until the final 15 minutes for the deadlock to be broken. A fine ball down the left channel left Morgan through on goal, and he outpaced the centre-half before calmly slotting the ball home for his 15th goal of the season. The game-changing moment came just two minutes later, when Morgan missed a great chance to extend the lead. After a fine back heel by Davison from the bye line, he shot tamely at the keeper and Corsham unbelievably broke away and made it all square. The excitement wasn’t over though and in stoppage time, Keynsham were awarded a penalty for a push in the box. Morgan stepped up to take it, but shot weakly at the keeper who saved with his legs. In the end, a draw was a fair result in what was a great advert for Western League football, as the Ks moved up to 16th in the First Division. In an experiment with Friday night football to try to attract more spectators, a crowd of 76 saw the Ks earn a vital 1-0 win over Roman Glass St George. The visitors dominated the opening exchanges. Ks’ stopper

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field

Ben Harris in action against Corsham Town Ashley Wintle was called into action several times in the first 15 minutes, but his handling was exemplary and the visitors could not breach his goal. However, a frantic first half saw the hosts come more and more into the game, almost scoring with a vicious corner that deceived everyone but was deflected past a post, and then being defied by a smart save on the line by the visiting keeper. The Ks then took the lead on 20 minutes. Full-back Scott Brain played a lovely through ball and top scorer Tom Morgan latched on to it and lashed the ball home for his 16th goal of the campaign. Although there were some nervy moments for the Ks’ fans as the clock ticked down, man of the match Wintle proved unbeatable and they closed the game out for three vital points. Valentine’s Day saw a topsyturvy encounter at the AJN Stadium, as the Ks squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with fifth-placed Wincanton Town. Keynsham made a great start to the game and were 1-0 up after just two minutes. Full back Ryan Beak took on his opposite number and beat him for pace to get to the byeline. His low drilled cross found the onrushing Ben Stiff, still up from a set piece, to make it 1-0 to the Ks. Keynsham then went on to create two more chances to increase their lead before half time. Liam Robson headed the ball on for his strike partner Pat Davison to run on to, but his first-time shot forced John Hill into a smart stop to deny

the Ks’ striker. Jason Adams then weighted a through ball for Matt Curnock to latch on to from midfield which tested Hill again but he saves well at his near post. The youthful energy of the young Keynsham line-up, the average age of which was just 22, allowed them to press high up the pitch and on the hour mark they made it 2-0. Ben Harris showed some quick feet to release Davison, who bent his run inside looking to commit the keeper. He had the sense to look up and spot Jordan Hawkins arriving at the far post, leaving the winger with a tap in for his fourth goal of the season. On 73 minutes, the Ks scored a third goal. A breakaway found Hawkins on the wing who managed to get past his marker to set up Davison with a one-onone. The striker took it round Hill to roll the ball home for his seventh goal of the season. This sparked a reaction from Wincanton and they scored just after the kick-off. A long ball forward forced Wintle to come for it but substitute Cook lobbed the ball over him and despite the efforts of Stiff getting back on the line, the ball squeezed home to give the visitors hope. New signing Bertrand Abang was brought on for the tiring Curnock but Keynsham conceded just a minute later on the 82nd minute. An early cross allowed White to shake off his marker to nod home past Wintle with a free header to stun the Keynsham defence. The Wincanton bench could sense

59

they were in with a shout with five minutes left and made two substitutions to try and steal at least a draw. The game should have been Keynsham’s on the 87th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Hawkins had already put the ball in the back of the net but the ref called the game back for a pull on the winger in the build-up. Harris steps up for the Ks, but blasted the spot kick against the bar. Then deep into injury time, the ref awarded Wincanton a penalty after a tumble in the area. The responsibility fell on the captain, Mike Taylor, who slotted the ball home to steal an unlikely draw right at the death. Keynsham Town were then outclassed by league leaders Welton Rovers, who cruised to a comfortable 5-2 victory at the AJN Stadium. The Ks found themselves three goals behind in half an hour – Dan Cottle capitalised on a defensive mixup between home keeper Ashley Wintle and centre-half Ben Stiff and then Anthony Conradi, who later scored a hat trick, latched onto a clever through ball and finished neatly. This was followed by a well taken goal by Joe Garland. After a decent 15-minute spell in the second half, the visitors wrapped up the points either side of goals by Jordan Hawkins and a scrambled own goal. Despite some decent wing play from Ryan Beak on one side and Ben Harris on the other, Keynsham never found a rhythm to get back in the game and Welton increased their lead at the top of the table. March sees the Ks start a run of four home games. Firstly Almondsbury UWE are the visitors on Saturday, March 7 (3pm kick-off). The following week (March 14) sees Chard Town at Crown Fields (3pm kick-off), while Hengrove Athletic are the visitors for a local derby on March 21 (3pm kick-off). The next game will be on Good Friday (April 3) when Portishead Town come to the AJN for a 3pm kick-off. In the meantime, everyone at Keynsham Town is pleased that Barrie Newton, who owns the club’s facility management company Brae Avalon, is now back at home following surgery and is on the road to recovery.
