Problems at Park The transport chief for Bath and North East Somerset Council has said that he wants to ensure the ongoing disruption faced by Keynsham residents living near the Meadows development “never happens again anywhere else in the authority”. Cabinet member for transport Councillor Anthony Clarke was speaking to Keynsham town councillors at their meeting on April 19, after being invited to give them an update on work to tackle trouble spots in the town as part of the authority’s transport strategy for Keynsham. He said the situation in Park Road was “unspeakable” and he was working to ensure the major projects team and highways officers talked “in a meaningful way” over future schemes, “ensuring agreements signed with developers take these things into account”. Taylor Wimpey is building nearly 300 homes off Park Road and construction traffic accessing the site since work began in 2012 has prompted a raft of complaints from residents. These

have included lorries delivering materials outside of the agreed hours, potholes and damage to grass verges from HGVs, drivers failing to use the agreed routes to and from the site, reports of speeding as well as a long-hopedfor haul road to redirect vehicles failing to materialise. Responding to the comments, a Taylor Wimpey spokesman said the company had met with the community and ward councillors regularly and kept residents informed of activities at the site via a newsletter. He added: “We recognise that we have a responsibility to keep disturbance to our neighbours to a minimum during our construction operations, and this is a responsibility we take very seriously. We regret that people living near the Meadows have experienced inconvenience and disruption and we will continue to listen to residents’ concerns and try to put right any problems which are brought to our attention.” Also at the top of the agenda at the April meeting were wors-

Forum to offer showcase for local groups

An initiative to bring together public services, local groups and residents to tackle issues in Keynsham gave the floor to a number of voluntary groups to showcase their work at a recent meeting. The Keynsham Area Forum welcomed guest speakers from Keynsham Wombles, Keynsham District Dial-a-Ride, Community@67, Keynsham in Bloom, Keynsham Foodbank and Butterflies-Haven. The Community Showcase will now be a regular feature at the forum’s meetings, said chair Councillor Alan Hale.

The forum is open to all members of the public and covers Keynsham, Chelwood, Compton Dando, Corston, Farmborough, Saltford, Whitchurch and Marksbury, giving residents the chance to discuss issues with the police, council and other organisations. The forum will next meet on June 30, September 28 and November 22 at 6pm with venues to be confirmed. To find out more, go to www. bathnes.gov.uk and search “connecting communities” or contact Sara Dixon on 01225 396594.

Road ‘should never happen again’

‘Campaign to enforce loading bay rules’ There will be “significant enforcement” of a loading bay at Market Walk in coming weeks, B&NES transport chief Anthony Clarke has pledged. A traffic order to prevent the space in front of the library and Sainsbury’s being used by motorists to park their cars will be implemented this month, he said. Residents have raised safety fears over the situation in ening parking problems in the town centre as the new council offices reached full occupancy. Councillor Brian Simmons said Keynsham and District Dial a Ride drivers had noticed an

previous weeks, with one telling Keynshamvoice: “Vehicles always seem to park nose in then reverse out onto Temple Street, onto the crossing and into the face of oncoming traffic. I have seen numerous near misses, both with other vehicles and with pedestrians.” The police will also be asked to keep a “watching brief” on the site once the traffic order is in place, Mr Clarke added. increase in on-street parking on both sides of various residential streets, causing problems in narrow roads such as Handel Road, Sherwood Road and Park Road. Councillor Zoe Wilkins, chair

of the Chamber of Commerce, said traders had reported car parks were filled during the week by people with parking permits while the Civic Centre car park was poorly used at weekends as a result of poor signage, they believed. Ms Wilkins suggested that raising the price of parking permits could be considered to encourage more people to use public transport. An annual parking permit for Keynsham’s long-stay car parks is £216 while a yearly season ticket for rail travel from Bristol or Bath to Keynsham is £860 or £868 respectively and a Touchcard for bus travel from Bristol or Bath is £792 or £960 respectively for the year. A resident also took the opportunity to raise his concerns about HGVs and buses mounting the pavements at narrow points on Charlton Road. Mr Clarke said he had been taken on tours of the town by Keynsham councillors Charles Gerrish and Alan Hale, visiting some of the worst “pinch points”

and he believed bollards on the pavements on Charlton Road could force buggy and wheelchair users into the road. “There are very difficult problems relating to this, and the major one from a council point of view is that we don’t have authority to do anything about traffic offences or police matters. The Local Government Association is trying hard to change that so that we can deal with things like HGVs mounting the pavement and not have to rely on police,” he said. An experimental approach to traffic orders was the correct way, he added, while longer term methods of altering traffic flow, such as a bypass, were looked at and he would take on board issues raised about parking. Transport studies following on from the Keynsham Transport Strategy adopted last year were also continuing, he said, and the town council would be consulted before the trial of one-way traffic on the High Street was implemented, although no date has been set.

Expert hopes to unearth secrets of Roman ruins The Roman remains underneath Keynsham Cemetery could be “one of the most important buildings ever found in Britain”, according to archaeologist Bryn Walters. Mr Walters, who is director of the Association of Roman Archaeology (ARA), is challenging the long-held belief that the Durley Hill building was a private villa and suggests it was instead a healing centre visited by hundreds of people. Excavations at the cemetery by volunteers from Bath and Camerton Archaeological Association (Bacas) in July last year appear to support his theory and now, Mr Walters told members of Keynsham Town Council last month, he hopes to be able to get permission carry out more work at the site. A Victorian wall, a number of conifers, building materials and timber at the base of the road embankment would need to be removed to get better access

Bob Whitaker MBE and Gary Pratt of Bacas at the excavation site in Keynsham Cemetery last year to the ruins that were partially explored in 2015’s dig, he said. There were similarities between Keynsham’s remains and those of the Roman temples at Lydney and Nettleton in Wiltshire, he explained, with no sign of living quarters at Durley Hill and instead what could be a series of small baths or “slumber rooms”.

A set of very worn steps also suggested it was a place visited by hundreds of people, and not a private residence. A healing sanctuary at the site could have been the stimulus for building Trajectus, the Roman town believed to lie underneath the Somerdale site, he said. “There were three terraces down the hillside, it was designed

A section of Roman wall uncovered last year to be seen at a long distance, glowing on the hillside when viewed from Trajectus. Look across at dawn and that building would be gleaming on the hill, which suggests it’s not private, but public.” He added: “We need to gain more accurate and detailed archaeological information from within the cemetery to get new evidence and a better understanding of what this building was all about,” he said. ARA has funding to carry out a geophysical survey of the field to the south of Durley Hill, opposite the cemetery, this year. Permission for further work at

the cemetery would need to be granted by Bath and North East Somerset Council and the diocese and Mr Walters hopes he can get the go-ahead to dig new trenches at the site next year. He added that once work had been completed the remains could be covered and capped, creating a visible outline of the building in the grass, and new information panels could be installed. He said: “My aim is to give Keynsham some of its history back.” Town councillors expressed support for further work and have asked Mr Walters to submit his proposals in writing.

Neighbourhood Plan under way Residents helped get Keynsham’s Neighbourhood Plan off to a flying start, covering the image of a train with Post-It notes featuring ideas for the town at a launch event last month. The event at The Space gave people the chance to talk to councillors and others involved in the initiative that aims to help shape development in Keynsham in the future. The areas the plan will cover include: roads, transport and parking; business, employment and economic growth; heritage, development, tourism and marketing; sustainability, environmental and ecological issues; recreation, leisure and sport; cultural development; health, wellbeing and community education. Large boards featuring train trucks bearing these headings were installed in The Space over April 8 and 9, with residents invited to write down their views and ideas.

and stick them to the display. The well-attended event means there is plenty to be discussed as the plan begins to take shape, with further updates to be available on Keynsham Town Council’s website www.keynsham-tc.gov. uk, on its Facebook page or at the Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan Facebook page. Residents can also email ndp@keynsham-tc.gov.uk or call 0117 986 8683 to find out how they can get involved. Once a plan is drawn up and approved by residents, future developments will need to meet its criteria unless there are special circumstances.

Do baby birds need our help? Spring has finally sprung and many birds are busy raising their new families. However, what should you do if you find what appears to be an “orphaned” baby bird? According to the RSPCA, you must first assess how old the bird is. This can be done by looking at the feathers – if it is fully feathered it will be a fledgling, if it has none or very few, this will be a nestling. If you find a fledgling If it is not injured, do not touch it or move it. Fledglings often attempt to leave the nest before they can fly and are usually being watched by their parents nearby. Continue to watch from a distance to see if the parents return. DO NOT attempt to put the fledgling back in its nest as this can be more damaging than helpful. If the fledgling is in immediate danger (e.g. from cats or busy roads etc) you can place it in a sheltered, safe area close to where you found it and continue to watch from a distance. If, after watching it for a long period of time,

you believe the bird to be orphaned, place it in a wellventilated box and take it to your nearest wildlife rescue centre or contact a veterinary practice. If you find a nestling Nestlings are often far too young to be able to survive for long outside of the nest and should be taken to a rescue centre or vets as soon as possible. Baby birds and wildlife require specialist treatment, so please never try to care for an “orphaned” animal yourself. If you find a baby bird and are unsure what to do, please contact a wildlife rescue centre, the RSPCA or your local veterinary practice for more information.

Work on improvements at station ‘to be completed by September’ Work to improve Keynsham Station – including its passenger shelters – could continue into September this year, Network Rail has told residents. Major engineering work was carried out between April 2 and 11 prepare the line between Bristol and Bath for electric trains, which saw Keynsham Station closed for nine days and more than 500 members of Network Rail’s “orange army” working 24 hours a day on the project. The track was lowered to allow enough room for the new trains to travel under Station Road and the overhead electric lines that will be installed, while modifications to the station’s platforms and work to install foundations for the overhead lines were also begun. Contractors Hochtief (UK) Construction and Babcock International will be continuing to carry out follow-up work on the lines and on improvements at

Workers installed 10,000 tons of ballast – the stones under the track – during the work between Bristol and Bath in April the station itself, however. Tamping, to ensure the new railway sleepers sit firmly in the ballast, is expected to be carried out in the early hours of various Sunday mornings until the end of May and possibly into June as well. Meanwhile Hochtief will continue work on installing a new shelter on Platform

1, renovating the shelter on Platform 2, reprofiling Platform 2, adjusting manholes and drainage, brickwork, resurfacing and installing the foundations for overhead line equipment. Most of this work is expected to take place during weekdays, although some tasks will need to be carried out overnight when no trains are running.

In a letter to residents, Network Rail community relations executive Ben Nelson said: “We expect to complete the majority of our activities at Keynsham Station by September, 2016.” He added: “We recognise that construction work on the railway can be disruptive to those living or working nearby. “The nature of our work often means some disturbance is unavoidable, but please be assured that every effort is made to minimise any unnecessary noise and we have reminded all staff and contractors to be considerate of the environment they are working in.” The work forms part of Network Rail’s £40billion Railway Upgrade Plan for Britain’s railways – more information about work taking place in Bath and North East Somerset can be found at www. networkrail.co.uk/great-westernroute-modernisation/banes/

Ultra-marathon runners step in to support Luka A couple running a gruelling 285km ultra-marathon have dedicated their efforts to a Keynsham family battling to improve the life of their profoundly disabled son. Garrad Bailey, a South Gloucestershire Council road safety officer, and his partner Liz Wiggins are taking part in a sixday ultra-marathon in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco this month. The super-fit couple are raising money through sponsorship, with all funds going to the family of Luka Cerabona who was born in 2012 with cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs, epilepsy and the rare condition porenchephaly, a cyst on the brain. Luka’s parents, mum Kim and dad Jules, hope to be able to convert their Amberley Close home to create a ground floor bedroom and wet room for Luka, enabling him to get around by himself in his walker or

wheelchair and to provide space for the many therapies he has at home. Bath and North East Somerset Council is providing £30,000 towards the project, which has left a shortfall of around £17,000, a target Luka’s family and friends are tirelessly working towards. Alongside providing day-tocare for Luka, Kim and Jules have held a series of fundraising events such as sales and a disco and, with donations from individuals, £400 from the Lions Club of Keynsham and more than £1,400 from two family friends who ran the Bath Half Marathon, their total has reached more than £8,000. Developer Bloor Homes has also pledged £7,000 after an approach from local councillor Alan Hale and Garrad and Liz’s marathon effort will help in the final push to enable building work to begin. Garrad said: “The family are working really hard on

raising the much-needed funds themselves by numerous sales and charity events, so we thought we would like to help support them to get that one step closer.” The Trans Atlas Marathon sees participants running for 10 to 12 hours a day and ascending more than 46,000ft (14,000m), or the equivalent of running over Mount Everest twice, while carrying water, clothing and emergency equipment. Councillor Alan Hale said: “I have been working in support of Luka and his family for some six months or more now and I am humbled by the fundraising done by Kim. “It is great that Garrad, latterly a work colleague of mine, has agreed to put all of his physical effort into raising money for the cause. We recently have had a meeting with officers from We Care and Repair and plans have been agreed and the processes will now start to run but it is vital that we raise the last

Communities say thanks with annual awards Keynsham and Saltford have been celebrating their community heroes, handing out awards to residents in thanks for their contribution to local life. Keynsham Town Council’s Good Citizens Award was this year presented to Ric Davison, director of Keynsham Music Festival, Keynsham Town Community Radio presenter and Arts Consortium co-ordinator, a role in which he has brought a number of productions and performers to The Space. Ric received a framed certificate from town council chairman Lisa O’Brien at the Annual Town Meeting on April 21, as well as £100 to go to a good cause of his choice. Ric spoke about his involvement in the community before saying his £100 would be split between Keynsham Music Festival Association, Keynsham Town

Community Radio, the Arts Consortium and Dorothy House, in memory of Francis Clifton, a close friend of his son who lived in Keynsham and worked with the Scouts and who died last year at the age of 23. After the presentation, Ric said: “I am honoured with this award, if not embarrassed. The work I do is far from finished and of course also relies on the devotion of many other volunteers. But I am pleased that my views on town regeneration are being acknowledged in this way.” In Saltford, the parish council handed out no less than seven community awards on April 5. Saltford Brass Mill Volunteer Group received the inaugural Group of the Year award for their achievements in maintaining and opening up the historic site to the public and engaging with the community. Fire crews begin working from £5.4m station

Just over a year after construction began, firefighting crews have begun working from the new £5.4 million Hicks Gate fire station. The building on Durley Hill replaces Keynsham’s former fire station in Temple Street, which closed in November, as well as Brislington fire station, which closed its doors on April 19 as Hicks Gate opened. The new station will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will accommodate one fire engine, a foam unit, a salvage unit, the Environmental Response Unit and the Red Cross Emergency Response vehicle as well as training facilities. The station, which was built by Willmott Dixon, also has photovoltaic panels which it is hoped will generate around half of the annual electricity used by the former Brislington fire station.

Chief Fire Officer Kevin Pearson said: “I’m delighted the new Hicks Gate fire station is operational and now serving the local community. This is the first brand new fire station built in Avon since 1980 so it marks a real milestone. “The fire stations at Brislington and Keynsham have served their communities well for many years, but the opening of Hicks Gate fire station represents a new chapter and the opportunity for us to provide an even better service. “The station will be crewed around the clock, which means improved response standards for the areas previously served by an on-call station. “The new station will also provide a state-of-the-art base and training facilities for our staff which will ensure the continuation of the excellent service we provide to the community.”

Hundreds object from both sides of site Proposals to build 250 houses on land to the east of Keynsham have drawn criticism from both sides of the earmarked site. More than 300 objections have been made by residents of Keynsham and Saltford to plans by developer Mactaggart and Mickel for a new housing estate on former green-belt land, known locally as Breaches Gate. Alongside many individuals, Saltford Environment Group and Transition Keynsham have also objected to the plan, which

would include a primary school, green spaces, foothpaths and cycleways, and would be accessed by vehicles via a traffic light-controlled junction with the A4. Commenting on the scheme, both Salford Parish Council and Keynsham Town Council have raised concerns at the impact on traffic on the A4, with Keynsham councillors also calling for surveys on archaeology, drainage and ecology. Public consultation on the proposals has now closed, with a decision expected in June.

Youth councillors call for EU votes

Pupils from Chandag Infant School use the zebra crossing outside their school during road safety week

Pupils put road safety lessons into action on their route to school Youngsters at a Keynsham school have been getting up to speed on staying safe on the roads during a week of themed activities. Chandag Infant School organised a road safety week with lessons and assemblies to teach children how to cross roads safely and interpret road signs and markings. There was also the chance for children to put their knowledge into action outside the school grounds. The initiative follows a campaign last year by parents

of pupils at Chandag Junior and Infant schools to tackle speeding on Chandag Road and prevent dangerous parking. Bath and North East Somerset Council has since installed a zebra crossing on the road, lowered a number of kerbs where people cross, repainted double yellow lines, installed flashing signs to remind drivers of the 20mph speed limit and introduced a one-way system outside Chandag Road shops to reduce congestion.

The parents are now working with the schools to see how best to spend money raised towards the campaign to further improve safety, having already purchased 60 hi-vis vests for youngsters to wear during school trips. Residents say they have seen a reduction in speeding but that there is still a need to raise awareness. Some residents will soon be given training to use speed guns, which will result in speeding drivers receiving a letter from the police.

Members of Keynsham’s youth council are calling on politicians to change an “outdated” law and give young people a say on whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union. Four youth councillors from KeynshamNow have signed their names to a letter to local media arguing for 16 and 17-year-olds to be given a vote in the forthcoming referendum on June 23 as the outcome will affect their lives “more than any other age group in this country”. “We pay tax. We can join the army, fight for our country. We can get married. If we lived in Scotland, we could have voted for independence last year. This country is supposed to be democratic but not for us,” write Alex Beaumont, Caitlin Bren, Dani Phillips and Zak Waters. KeynshamNow was nominated in the Young Person of the Year category at the Bath Pride Awards 2016. The group was highly commended at a ceremony on April 14. ‘Sea change’ at school gets results as inspectors award ‘good’ rating Ofsted inspectors say a Keynsham school has “transformed” since their last visit and have awarded it a rating of “good with outstanding features”. Staff and governors at St Keyna Primary School said they were delighted at the outcome of the two-day inspection in March, during which there was praise for the quality of teaching, effective leadership, the curriculum and for pupils’ behaviour, contribution to school life and attitude to learning. While the school earned an overall rating of good, inspectors also judged early years provision and personal development, behaviour and welfare to be outstanding. It follows an inspection in January 2014 when St Keyna was given a rating of “requires improvement” and inspectors commented in their report: “The headteacher’s resolute focus on ensuring that all pupils have

Inspectors met staff, governors and pupils and had 46 responses to an online questionnaire for parents, in which all said they would recommend the school to others. Headteacher Adrienne Hughes said: “We are very proud of this report, which recognises the hard work and determination of the brilliant St Keyna team. Everyone pulled together to make a range of improvements for the benefit of our amazing pupils. The school is going from strength to strength.” Chair of governors Chris Jorgensen added: “The governors are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the tremendous improvements that have taken place at St Keyna since the last inspection. “Staff, pupils, parents and governors have all played their part in ensuring we live up to the school motto ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’.”

Following the Keynsham Area Forum meeting in April, which was held at the Somerdale Pavilion, a few issues were raised, not all of which are police matters. Some have been tasked to the relevant departments to deal with. The main concern seemed to be the policing of the loading bay on Temple Street, and the danger vehicles pose when they reverse from it onto the road. The loading bay has since been marked with a single yellow line, which is due to be enforced by the council’s parking attendants. The loading bay is designed for the use of goods vehicles delivering items to the local businesses, and not for members of the public popping to the shops. The

with PC James Evans council provides ample public car parking so please make use of it. Offences of theft from motor vehicles have been occurring on the west side of Keynsham. Primarily vans are being targeted, with tools kept inside being stolen. Our advice is to remain vigilant, make sure all items are stowed securely and out of sight and, where possible, remove items of value from your vehicles. If you can, mark your tools and equipment and keep up-to-date records of both model and security numbers. This helps us to reunite owners with their property when it is recovered. The offences are mainly happening overnight, so if you see or hear anything that you think is suspicious then

please call the police to report it. If you think an offender may be present, or an offence is in progress, then please call 999. We have suffered a small amount of daytime burglaries, with offenders targeting properties in both Keynsham and Saltford in the afternoon. So again, if you see someone suspicious or out of place, please call us to report it. Lastly, anti-social behaviour: this is one of our main policing problems and affects a large amount of the community in different ways. I would urge you to challenge any behaviour that you deem to be anti-social without putting yourself in any danger. If you are not confident to do this then please record as many details about the incident

as possible: time, date, location, and descriptions of involved parties. We will then follow up and look to deal with any offences that are identified. Our response to these problems is to carry out directed and targeted patrols of the problem areas at the relevant times of the offences. In all cases, we look to secure and preserve evidence in an attempt to locate and identify offenders. We are a small team of officers and your help is needed, so if you see something of note then please make contact. If you have any information, please pop into the One Stop Shop in the library and let us know, or visit the Avon and Somerset force website and search for the local policing team.

17 Cadets from Bristol ACF visited many of the war memorials in the Cambrai area during their trip

Cadets’ moving visit to Somme battlefields More than 70 cadets from the City and County of Bristol Army Cadet Force travelled to France in April to visit the First World War battlefields of the Somme, where tens of thousands of soldiers lost their lives 100 years ago. The five-day trip saw cadets based at a campsite in Cambrai, where local historian Philippe Gorczynski guided them on visits to many of the area’s war memorials and museums. One moving visit took them to the Thiepval Memorial where there are hundreds of graves for unknown soldiers killed on the battlefields as well as a memorial to the missing of the Somme, more than 72,000 British and Commonwealth servicemen who

died in the fighting but have no known grave. “Some cadets became very emotional trying to come to terms with the vastness of the numbers involved,” said one Bristol ACF member. The group also held a remembrance parade at the military cemetery at Louverval, where Deputy Commandant Lt Col Barry Angus and Captain Hannah Hatch laid county wreaths. The Bristol ACF, whose headquarters are in Keynsham, has made the trip to Cambrai for the past 11 years, taking a total of 582 cadets and 274 adult instructors. The cadets raised money towards the visit with a sponsored walk along the Bristol-Bath Railway Path in September.

£500 award for project to brighten up shopping area A project to give a green makeover to a corner of Keynsham lacking in colour has become one of just 40 across the whole country to be awarded £500. Keynsham in Bloom and Community@67 have teamed up to brighten up the shopping precinct at Queens Road with flowers as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Greening Grey Britain Campaign. The RHS has now awarded £500-worth of gardening materials to the project, as well as support from one of its community outreach advisors to help the scheme make the biggest impact possible on the community. Joined by members of St Keyna Primary School’s Green Team, volunteers have already installed a planter filled with spring bulbs and there are plans to organise a number of activities to involve residents and traders, including a hanging basket workshop. Denise James, chair of Keynsham in Bloom, said: “This is a

great project and will certainly brighten up Queens Road shopping area, which is a well-used and valued community resource. The project will also give a sense of ownership to the locals and allow them to become more involved in transforming their local community and help to develop pride in their community. I am really pleased that the RHS felt that our project was worthy of receiving funding.” Martin Burton, chair of Community@67, said “This is an exciting initiative and Community@67 is pleased to be working

with the Keynsham in Bloom group and the local community to bring flowers and plants to the area around the Queens Road shops. It is always special to see flowers grow over a period of time and see what a difference they make to an area. We would also like to thank the RHS and Curo for their support with this project.” Keynsham will be judged in the South West in Bloom competition on Friday, July 15, and as part of preparations Keynsham Cubs have filled the planters in Ashton Way car park with bulbs, which have begun to flower. Denise said: “When I used the car park recently I was amazed by how lovely the planters look, they have really enhanced the car park. Last year the planters were looking really untidy and overgrown. It’s wonderful to see the work being carried out by the 1st Keynsham Scout Group, it’s been great working with them over the last six months.”

@67 shows what’s on offer at open day

From a radio station to a food co-operative and arts and crafts sessions, residents are invited to find out more about everything that happens inside Community@67 at an open day. The community space at 67 Queens Road, Keynsham, is open to everyone to come and explore the activities on offer on Saturday, May 14, from 10am-4pm. There will be plenty of chances to get involved as the team is hoping to recruit extra volunteers to help run the activities, with roles, including radio operators on Keynsham Town Community Radio, kitchen staff, IT experts, cleaning and admin. Trustee Christina Smith said: “As a volunteer myself, I have been involved in deciding the various policies, helping us gain charitable status, helped run a week of exciting activities, made loads of friends, laughed a lot and most importantly, felt that I’ve made a difference in our community. Karen takes training in stride as she aims to tackle ‘silent killer’ Losing her aunt to cancer has inspired a Bristol woman to raise funds in her memory while kicking her unhealthy habits into touch. Karen Niang, 38, has pledged to complete the Bristol Race for Life on July 3 in aid of Cancer Research UK – although raising money is just one of her goals. The mum-of-two from Knowle has decided to lose weight and get fit as part of the challenge while also raising vital awareness about pancreatic cancer, the illness that claimed her aunt Sandra Wilton’s life in 2015. Karen said: “Last year my beautiful and talented Aunt Sandra lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. She passed very quickly after being diagnosed but, on reflection and armed with knowledge, she showed signs for quite a while, we just didn’t know what those signs were. Pancreatic cancer is a silent killer so I’m hoping I can raise awareness in taking part in this event while

raising a little money to help research.” Sandra lived in Keynsham and her sons Richard and Alex were joined by 17 members of Keynsham Cricket Club as they ran the Bath Half Marathon in March in her memory, raising £5,400 for Pancreatic Cancer Action. Karen, who is a part-time support worker for adults with learning disabilities, a stay-athome mum and is studying to be a teaching assistant, has thrown herself into training so she can take the 5km course in her stride, using a pedometer to keep upping the challenge. She is also writing a blog, Steps for Sandra, about her progress, in which she is also sharing facts about pancreatic cancer, the risk factors, signs and symptoms – https://stepsforsandra. wordpress.com/ She is also keeping focused on her weight loss goals at the Thursday morning Slimming

Theatre group stages musical as a follow-up to acclaimed debut show Members of a Saltford drama group are busy preparing for their second show, a follow-up to their well-received debut performance last year. Saltford Community Association Musical Productions (SCAMP) will present the musical Songs for A New World for four nights in June.

The group’s first show, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, which was staged at Saltford Hall in February last year, is a hard act to follow after it earned a nomination for Best Musical in the Rose Bowl Awards, which celebrate amateur theatre across the South West. Choosing the right show

as a follow-up after such an achievement was a tough task for the group, who have decided on a change in direction from last year’s comic offering. A SCAMP spokesperson said: “Songs For A New World features an incredible, uplifting score from Jason Robert Brown. Emotive and vocally challenging, it really pushes the boundaries for singers in technique, range and complex harmony. “It has taken a lot of hard work so far, but the results are very special indeed. The whole

cast has contributed ideas and creative inspiration to the presentation of the scenes, which is giving the show a fresh and unique feel.” The show will run at Saltford Hall from Wednesday, June 15, to Saturday, June 18, at 8pm. Tickets are priced at £10 (£8 concessions) and are available on 07789 716542 or at scamp@ tutanota.com or events@ saltfordhall.co.uk. They can also be purchased from Saltford Post Office and Saltford Hall Booking Office. L Guest of honour George Thomson, seated front, celebrates his 100th at a surprise tea party

Surprise celebration for George’s 100th Friends and family surprised a Keynsham great-grandfather with a tea party at the Somerdale Pavilion to mark his 100th birthday. Ernest “George” Thomson reached the milestone on April 9 when more than 80 of his loved ones gathered for a celebration. George worked as a chef first at the Carlton Club, London’s oldest Conservative club, and then the prestigious Savoy Hotel before he signed up to join the Royal Army Medical Corps as war broke out, spending six years in the Middle East.

After the war, he returned to working in the clubs before moving into catering management and finally ending his career at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. He married Babs in 1938 and they had children David and Lesley and moved to Bristol and then Keynsham in the Sixties, where he lives in the same house today. George’s three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren were also among the guests at his celebration, which daughter Lesley said was a perfect day enjoyed by all.

Prevent gridlock before it happens In reference to the letter sent by Lin published in your previous issue in regard to the axing of the doomed 637 service, I was also disappointed that it had stopped, as it went right past my home and I frequently used it myself to visit friends in Whitchurch or go to the leisure centre in Hengrove. I was particularly interested in the point Lin had made about why new bus stops had been built at the top of Charlton Road by the Bilbie Green development if the bus service serving that road had been stopped. I emailed B&NES council Public Transport & Parking Services to inquire about this and they told me that “there are discussions being

21

held with the developers around access to the site and locations for bus stops” but that they “don't envisage a bus including the new houses on its route until April 2017”. Now this is, of course, better than the raw deal residents of the Meadows development have, with the nearest bus stop being around 700 yards away on Park Road. However, am I mad for thinking that the transport services should be in place to prevent traffic gridlock rather than curing the problem after it has already happened? Hopefully some longer-term thinking will lead to better local services around Keynsham, as not everyone is fit or well enough to walk to the High Street to get a bus, nor should they have to. Music fan brings vinyl revival to Keynsham

A music lover has turned his passion into a business, opening an independent record shop in Keynsham’s Temple Street. Iain Aitchison launched Longwell Records on Saturday, April 30, with live music from reggae to folk-rock, reflecting the wide range of genres available in store. Inside the shop, Iain has drawn on his own artistic skills to create two distinct areas – “Chaos”, where customers can browse punk, indie, prog rock, experimental and more surrounded by posters and Iain’s own artwork, and “Order”, where records featuring jazz, pop, classical and soundtracks are organised beneath framed pictures. There is also a listening station for people to try before they buy and a record-cleaning service, as well as some secondhand turntables for sale and advice on where to buy new. Iain said the vinyl revival has boomed over the last few years, with some people buying records for the nostalgia while others have become fans of the unique

sound more recently, with many current artists releasing new tracks on vinyl. He said: “I am a music fan and not just into certain genres. There is no music snobbery at Longwell Records – this is a record shop where all types of people can access music and we don’t care if you buy Chris de Burgh or David Bowie. “We have a massive range, from classical to new bands, as well as a local artist section featuring bands like Portishead and Massive Attack. “Records have become hugely popular again and I think it’s the unique sound and the warmth of vinyl, with early pressings a truer version of the original recording than anything you get from a download.” Iain added the Keynsham community had been very welcoming and he was excited to be setting up in the town, where the store will be the only independent record shop between Bristol and Chippenham. He also hopes to host some live music in future and get involved in Keynsham Music Festival.

Wanted for cash, Vinyl Records, Collections & Music Memorabilia for a new independent Record store NOW OPEN in Keynsham Longwell Records have a healthy sized collection of vinyl records for sale and also provide a record cleaning service which is based on £1 per LP. We also stock plastic, paper inner sleeves & LP covers. Most genres catered for as we hate musical snobbery at Longwell Records. Members of Saltford Fairtrade Group run a stall at the Co-op store

Fairtrade focus of village events Residents in Saltford have been proving the community’s Fairtrade Village status is welldeserved over the past few weeks. Guests at the Annual Parish Meeting on April 5 were served a range of Fairtrade refreshments supplied by Saltford Community Association, including homemade Fairtrade cakes. A spokesperson for Saltford Fairtrade Group said: “With village achievement awards handed out to proud recipients what better way to finish the evening than to enjoy Fairtrade refreshments. Our thanks go to the parish council for renewing their support for Fairtrade during the evening and letting us share the Fairtrade ethos at this celebratory evening.” The Fairtrade group hosted a stall in the village’s Cooperative store to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, speaking to shoppers about the Fairtrade cause as well as offering them some Fairtrade chocolate.

Members of the group also met other supporters at an event at Bath University where they heard various speakers, including Anna Marie, a Nicaraguan coffee grower who said being part of a Fairtrade co-operative benefited the whole community by providing education for the children, healthcare for women and the opportunity for both men and women to choose how to spend the extra premium they receive. The group’s spokesperson added: “Our message is simple, with Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With one simple choice you can get farmers a better deal.” The group is looking for new members and anyone who is interested can call Gill Self on 07821 188302 or email saltfordfairtrade@hotmail.co.uk There is also more information at fairtrade.org.uk/en/what-isfairtrade

Allotment site can now boast the greenest toilet in town! Allotment-holders in Keynsham have unveiled what is probably the town’s most eco-friendly toilet at their site off Park Road. The new composting loo has been a year in the planning, with the installation going ahead after members of Keynsham Allotment Association secured

funding from the Big Lottery Fund and Keynsham Town Council. The facility, installed by Ecotoilets, not only composts waste, its lighting and fan are also solar-powered and its shell is made using recycled materials and is maintenance-free. It was officially unveiled by

Councillor Carole Duckett, chair of the town council’s allotment committee, and members of the allotment association on April 28. The toilet is also fitted with facilities for disabled users, as the association hopes to be able to provide a plot for disabled gardeners in future.

Walking festival starts off on the right foot with successful debut The first ever Keynsham Walking Festival has been hailed a success with more than 130 people joining the seven walks organised over the weekend of April 9 and 10. The event was hosted by the Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group, with outings also organised by Saltford Walkers, Keynsham Methodist Ramblers and Somerdale Ramblers. Two short themed walks proved popular, with Andrew Wells, David Sage and members of the Avon Wildlife Trust leading a Photography and Naturethemed walk, while Richard Dyson and members of Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society led the way on a six-mile history walk, which included a stop for cream teas at Queen Charlton. The weekend’s walks covered a large part of the area and villages around Keynsham, with the longest walk comprising an

A social evening also brought walkers together at Scout HQ in Ashton Way, where Carol Thompson gave a talk accompanied by pictures on walking the Great Wall of China and members of the Walkers are Welcome group displayed a montage of photos taken on walks throughout the year. The whole festival culminated

in a family event at the Memorial Park, attended by more than 200 people, who took part in a treasure hunt to find animals scattered around the park, as well as enjoying entertainment from compere Jimmy Mac and songs from the Frozen princesses. Organisers say plans are already well under way for the next Keynsham Walking Festival and they would like to thank:

Around 150 crews will take part in the Bristol Avon Regatta at Saltford Photo: Aaron Sims

Hundreds of rowers will take to river for regatta

The West’s answer to the Henley Regatta is returning to Saltford this month and everyone is invited to come and cheer the competitors on. Around 150 rowing crews are expected to take to the River Avon on Saturday, May 14, for a day of races along a 1,000-metre stretch in the Bristol Avon Regatta. The event is organised by Avon County Rowing Club at its base at the Saltford Rowing Centre, off the A4 Bath Road, where spectators can watch the races from the riverbank with refreshments from the tea tent. Races will begin at 9.30am

and will continue until 6pm, with events for different size boats, ability levels, ages and more, with competitors from around 15 to 20 different clubs. Regatta secretary Julian Sondheimer said: “Spectators can expect the thrills, excitement and atmosphere of a typical rowing regatta, as the rowers battle to get their boat’s bows ahead of their competitors and to cross the finishing line first, cheered on by their supporters. “Through the spring and summer there are rowing regattas taking place somewhere every weekend, and many crews will

compete in quite a few through the season. As well as providing exciting competition, a regatta such as ours provides crucial practice and experience opportunities for high-level crews aiming to compete at national level regattas later in the season.” The regatta is a revival of an event that was held on the Avon at Saltford in Victorian times until 1972. The rowing club at Saltford joined forces with other clubs to establish a regatta at Bristol Docks in 1979, which ran until 2007 before the event returned to Saltford in 2008. Darts team aim to make difference with donation to children’s hospice A South West charity that cares for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families has received a gift of £500 from a group of Keynsham darts players. Members of the Keynsham Wine Bar team had been saving up their weekly subs and the proceeds from selling football cards for around two years and decided to donate the funds to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). Ladies’ captain Chrissie Williams said the team had wanted to give to a local good cause rather than a bigger charity and Wine Bar landlady Alison Brunsdon had put them in touch with CHSW. The team, which includes Chrissie’s husband Ken, two daughters, son-in-laws, sisterin-law, niece and granddaughter, gathered at the High Street venue on April 20, where the cheque was presented to CHSW supporter Jim Davis, from Keynsham, whose severely

Jack had Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy and was profoundly deaf when at the age of four he suffered a catastrophic brain injury, a “life-changing event for the whole family”, explained Jim. You feel totally at ease that your child is getting the best care they’re ever going to get apart from at home. “It’s like a big blanket around you when you get to the hospice.” Jack’s family had already decided they wanted him to

spend his final days at the hospice and not in hospital and in December 2013 he was taken there in a high-dependency ambulance and died a few hours later. Jim said the hospice continues to support bereaved families after they lose their child and that, as a way of saying thank you, the family fundraise for the charity and he gives talks on its work.

In the Garden The month of May has arrived and I think it heralds the beginning of summer weather. It is a very busy time, for all the plants show signs of vigorous life. The soil is nicely moist and will be beginning to warm through with some sunny weather. Water butts are full, paths are swept and the beds are mostly weeded. Provided no heavy or prolonged frosts appear, it looks like the start of a good season. We have five different types of euonymus bush in the garden,

keynshamvoice

31

and I have taken the opportunity of a fine afternoon to give them a very light trim, just to remove the straggly ends. Each bush is cut to a different shape and they are dotted around the garden, catching the eye with their yellow/green foliage. All the roses were cut back hard in early March, reducing their height by a quarter. They are all showing some purple and bronze foliage, and after a spray against black spot should be looking good for the summer. The plum trees have a full show of flower, likewise the pears. What I I do not want is a frost! It will be tiring, but good to be able to have the benefit of the fruit. The daffodils and primroses have been splendid, but the daffodils are now finished. So deadhead them and let them die down naturally. Untidy, yes, but good for next spring. Soon I shall be digging out the compost from last year, into

the wheelbarrows and spreading it around. I just put shovels full under the bigger shrubs but when I get to the beds I fork it in lightly because the blackbirds seem to think that they have a duty to help, and throw it everywhere. When spreading compost around stems, be careful to leave a space around the stems so that the bark is not rotted by the compost. When all that is done I only have to transfer the “live” compost to the “dead” bin, ready to mature for next year. It’s a good time now to combat pests and diseases. Early

attention now will help to keep plants healthy. Look for signs of black spot, keep checking lilies, and clear away rubbish in the borders. Grass also needs attention. Lightly rake over the lawn, remove any dead moss and debris, and spread treatment as advised. Try to time it just before rain and the watering in will be done for you. Take a spade or half moon cutter and tidy the edges. Cut back any plants overhanging the grass, and square the edges of the grass with the shears. With all the growth happening, get some feed into pots, troughs and containers generally. Help is needed to form the framework and later the blooms. Make sure that these are watered and check regularly because recent afternoons have seen temperatures of 17°C. And small pots can dry out quickly. If you have overhauled your garden furniture, put it out and enjoy it – if not, why not!

Alternatively the seeds can be sown directly into the ground but leave this to the latter part of the month. Watch out for slug and snail damage as they love to eat these tender seedlings. With the beans, try staggering the sowings so that you can stagger the cropping and minimise the inevitable glut when harvesting. The broad beans sown under cover in April are now ready to

be planted out and these will hopefully crop after the autumn sown variety, which is already in flower. If your gardening season is running late don’t despair, as there is still plenty of time. May is the best month for sowing swede and turnip seeds in rows about 15 inches apart and remember to thin the seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Do this gradually until you get at least six inches between each plant as this provides the space to allow the crop to swell. If you have some space then you could try sweetcorn by sowing the seeds under cover early in May. Plant the seedlings no less than 18 inches apart in all directions to form a block. When

established, ensure any bare roots at the base are covered with soil and be careful with the hoe as the shallow roots can be easily damaged. Keep the plants well watered and they should be ready to crop from late July onwards when the “silks” have turned brown as this indicates that the fruit is ripe. If you are not sure, test a cob by squeezing a couple of grains. If a watery liquid squirts out they are not ripe. If the liquid is creamy they are just right but if it is thick and doughy you have waited too long. Continue to sow succession crops of salad, carrots, peas, spinach etc., and later this month sprouts, cabbage and outdoor tomatoes can be planted. Don’t forget to use the hoe every time you visit your plot.

On the Plot I noticed to my surprise that runner bean plants are on sale. They can be planted now as long as you are prepared to take a risk with the weather or you can provide some shelter from any overnight frosts. I prefer to wait until the end of May before planting out any tender plants so now is the time to start sowing the seeds in pots under cover. Included in this group are runner beans, dwarf beans, outdoor cucumber, courgettes, squash and pumpkins. They will take about a couple of weeks to germinate then gradually harden them off by placing them outdoors for a few days towards the end of May before planting when the risk of frost has gone.

Farewell to Sarah just a week before her 100th A Keynsham woman who met her husband on Opportunity Knocks and worked on wartime propaganda has died just a week short of her 100th birthday. Sarah Clark Hodgkins was born in Greenock, Scotland, in 1916, and loved to sing, meeting her husband after she was asked to perform with his accordion band in the original 1930s version of the talent show because there wasn’t enough space for both acts. Her great-grandfather ran Glasgow’s bus company while two of her great-aunts married brothers of William Cody – Buffalo Bill – after his Wild West show came to Glasgow, the family believes. During the war, Sarah worked for the National Savings propaganda department while her husband, a heating and ventilation engineer who was

later a director of the Bristol Fan Company in Brislington, was based at Salisbury Plain, working in the underground military base. Sarah moved to Hills Close in Keynsham in the late Fifties, where she continued to live for the rest of her life. Losing her husband in 1989, in later life Sarah continued to sing, including with St Dunstan’s Church Choir, and was a member of the Townswomen’s Guild and on the committee of the WI. Son Tony said: “Even up to the end of her life she was still sharp and didn't suffer fools gladly, which didn’t always endear!” Sarah passed away on Easter Saturday, just a week before her 100th birthday, and is survived by Tony, his wife Lynne, grandsons James, Rupert and Ben and two greatgrandsons.

The club is now looking for two new recruits who can continue the progress made by both the First team and Fry Club A team over the past two successful seasons. Meanwhile, due to work commitments, Sam Murray will no longer be able to lead progress with Fry Club A. Anyone interested in either role can contact club secretary Steve Curtis on 07929 746 815 or email stevecurtis@blueyonder. co.uk for further information. Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society The Profits from Slavery

The last of this season’s talks attracted more than 100 to hear Professor Madge Dresser speaking on her research into “Slavery and the Country Houses in the West Country”. She explained how the port of Bristol was central to the slave trade with fortunes being made from shipping, insurance, manufacturing goods for trade in west Africa as well as the Caribbean plantations. Sugar cane was the main crop and much of this was imported through Bristol and processed here. Successful merchants and businessmen then built many of the Georgian-era country houses in the area, including Dyrham House, Clevedon Court and the now-demolished Cleeve Hill House at Downend. The evening gave an insight into an aspect of the history and prosperity of this area that few

of us are conscious of but is gradually being recognised.

A waiting room with history?

During the construction of the Great Western Railway in 1837, the remains of a Roman villa were found in the excavation for the cutting close to where the A4 dual carriageway now crosses over the railway at Twerton Fork on the edge of Bath. With Brunel’s support, or perhaps at his request, Thomas Marsh, a young civil engineer working for the GWR, took a great interest in the remains of what became known as the Newton St Loe Villa and made meticulous notes and sketches in his surveyor’s notebook. The excavation revealed two buildings, one of which contained areas of mosaic floor, with those in two rooms in sufficiently good condition to be worth recording and saving. Indeed, one, depicting Orpheus

encircled by beasts, was of the highest quality. Remarkably for someone with no experience in the field, Marsh succeeded in safely lifting and removing both mosaics. These were taken to the newly-built station at Keynsham, where they were put on public display, the Orpheus pavement being relaid while the other was left in the panels in which it had been lifted. Exactly where the mosaics were placed we do not know – but they were apparently part of the flooring, possibly in the waiting room. The mosaics remained at Keynsham Station until 1851 when it was decided that they deserved a more suitable home. This was easier said than done but they found their way to what is now Bristol Museum. Unfortunately, the Orpheus pavement was broken up in lifting and then lay forgotten in store for the next 80 years. After intermittent efforts to put the fragments back together it

was finally restored in 2000 and is now displayed from time to time.

Mencap supporters secure £500 prize

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham Last year it emerged that Volkswagen rigged emissions tests for 11m cars, making the company responsible for nearly 1m tonnes of air pollution every year. That’s equivalent to the UK’s combined emissions for all power stations, vehicles, industry and agriculture. But it doesn’t end there. Over recent months it’s been revealed that Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi’s cars also emit significantly more NOx pollution on the road than in regulatory tests. Even this is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the Guardian newspaper, 97 per cent of all modern diesel cars emit more toxic nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution on the road than the official limit. Late last month, a group of cross-party MPs said that air pollution in the UK is now a “public health emergency”.

They pointed out the government’s failure to act on getting old, dirty diesel vehicles off the road. A report in February this year suggested that air pollution is linked to around 40,000 deaths per year. It can damage babies in the womb, giving them lifelong ill health, and it plays a role in many chronic conditions such as cancer, asthma, heart disease, and neurological changes linked to dementia. These statistics are

worrying, given the huge house building activity going on in Keynsham. As our town’s population grows and brings more cars into the area, how are we going to cut pollution levels? New housing developments must be pedestrian- and cyclefriendly, and well-connected to public transport. Shops, schools and surgeries should be within walking distance. Rather than encouraging car use, let’s see estates where parking areas are away from residential streets, and car clubs are encouraged. It’s being done elsewhere – the Netherlands is a world leader in sustainable housing developments. I wish our house builders and our council showed that kind of commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment. After all, everyone deserves to breathe clean air, don’t we?

Votes from members of the public have earned a much-needed £500 prize for Keynsham and District Mencap Society. The charity, which runs a number of regular clubs for people of all ages with a wide range of learning disabilities, was one of seven runners-up to receive a donation from an initiative launched by Airbus and the Bristol Post. Voters had to collect tokens from the Post and send them in before the deadline, with the prizes going to the local community groups with the most votes. Keynsham and District Mencap Society chair Lisa O’Brien and fundraiser Amanda Leonard attended an award ceremony at Airbus in Filton to collect the prize. Amanda said: “Keynsham & District Mencap work to improve the lives and opportunities of children and adults with a wide range of learning disabilities. They run nine clubs every week covering a broad range of activities targeted at all ages from five to 72.”

Oscar-winning screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. It has great performances from the leads as well as an eight-minute, Oscar-winning performance by Dame Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth I. A real gem, with a great, witty story and one of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s.

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Last month saw libraries celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. With this in mind, Shakespeare plays have been very successfully adapted to film such as:

DVD

l Shakespeare in Love (1999) This is a delightful, funny and thoroughly romantic film. Starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes, it tells the story of a young Will Shakespeare trying to battle writer’s block and the pressures from the theatre owner to stage his latest comedy Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter. Enter the beautiful Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) who, disguised as a young man, auditions for the all-male show and wins the part of Romeo. There is much misunderstanding before Viola catches the playwright’s heart. Will changes the original play, reflecting his romance with Viola, into the now famous, and tragic, Romeo and Juliet. The film was written by

Adult Fiction

l The Maker of Swans by Paraic O’Donnell Amid the fading grandeur of a country estate, Clara lives in the care of Mr Crowe, a man of many mysterious gifts, and his faithful manservant, Eustace. Free from rules and lessons, she inhabits a silent world of her own. She has her books, and her secret places. Mr Crowe was once the toast of the finest salons: a man of learning and means, he travelled the world, dazzling all who met him. Now, he devotes himself to earthly pleasures, while his great library gathers dust and his once magnificent garden grows wild. But Mr Crowe and his extraordinary gifts have not been entirely forgotten. When he commits a crime of passion, he attracts the attention of the sinister Dr Chastern, the head of a secret society to which Crowe still belongs. When Chastern comes to call him to account, his sinister attention is soon diverted to Clara. For Clara possesses secret gifts of her own, gifts whose power she has not yet

fully grasped. She must learn to use them quickly, if she is to save them all. This is a good book for those readers who like to actively join the dots of the plot up! It relies on flashbacks and interesting details that take the reader along Clara’s journey of discovery. It is about magic, much like that of the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell variety. I really liked how the character of Eustace was developed and how he protects Clara through the twisting plot.

Children’s Fiction

l Shakespeare for Everyone books There is a wide selection of Shakespeare for Everyone titles, which outline the plays of the great Bard! They simply give you the background to the play, tell the story and explain the characters; however, it will never replace seeing the play on the stage! l Romeo & Juliet It all begins in the city of Verona and the longstanding feud between the Montagues and the Capulets – in fact, the play starts with a street brawl. Then the next scene is a ball where Romeo meets Juliet and so begins one of the world’s most famous love stories, with the beautiful balcony scene and the final tragic ending. l Julius Caesar This play tells the well-known story of the great Roman general and statesman Julius

37

Caesar, who was assassinated at the height of his career by a group of senators. In fact, Julius Caesar was among the first plays to be put on in the newlybuilt Globe Theatre in 1599. The play has lots of hidden meanings about rulers getting too powerful and conspiracies that surround them.

Library News

l Bank Holiday closures Please note that Keynsham Library and One Stop Shop will be closed on Monday, May 30, due to the bank holiday. Remember that Saltford Library is now open on a Saturday between 9.30am and 1pm and is run by the successful volunteer group. l Baby Bounce & Rhyme The library holds Baby Bounce and Rhyme sessions every Tuesday. These are free sessions that take place in the children’s section of the library and are led by experienced volunteers. These ever-popular sessions are a great way for mums and dads to meet other parents and are suitable for 0- to threeyear-olds. We run two sessions; these are every Tuesday from 10-10.30am and then 1111.30am. l Storytime Every Thursday at 10.30am there is a Storytime session aimed at under-threes and their parents and carers in the children’s section of the library.

keeping the base intact. Grease a small baking dish or ovenproof pan with a little of the butter. Lay the figs in the pan. Try to keep them as upright as you can. Pop the rest of the butter in a separate small saucepan, with the honey, lemon juice and cinnamon. Heat gently to warm the honey and melt the butter,

then pour it over the figs. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, until the figs have just softened. Serve drizzled with the cooking syrup, with a good dollop of thick yoghurt and, if using, sprinkled with granola. l Recipe/photo reproduced by kind permission of Riverford Organic Farms

A Bath-based charity is challenging local people to give up sugar this month to support their work with farmers in Uganda. Send A Cow has launched Sweet Swap and is asking supporters to donate the money they save on sugary snacks, to collect sponsorship or even organise a sugar-free fundraising event. To inspire people, the charity has put together a collection of sugar-free recipes, including three from Uganda and one each from River Cottage, Demuths and Riverford, which is printed to the left. Send A Cow is working with farmers in Uganda to show them how to grow nutritious vegetable crops to feed their families and sell alongside the sugar cane they have traditionally grown. Tom Lacey, Send a Cow’s challenge events manager, said: “Send a Cow’s Sweet Swap is a great way for people to have a go at cutting back on sugar, at the same time as supporting a fantastic cause.” Visit www.sendacow.org/ sweetswap for more information.

Three charities get a slice of cake sale funds A tea and cake afternoon organised by a group of mums at St Dunstan’s Church Hall had all the right ingredients for a successful event. With a raffle featuring prizes including an air balloon flight, beauty treatments, meals out and more, as well as a bric-a-brac stall and tombola, the afternoon raised £1,300. The women have all experienced how cancer can affect people of all ages and have chosen to split the funds between women’s cancer charity The Eve Appeal, Children’s Hospice South West and St Peter’s Hospice. This is the third community event the group has organised, following last year’s soup kitchen,

Living Well with Andy Workman, practice director at The Beehive Natural Health Practice Are you the missing PEACE? Life can sometimes be a puzzle. We can all go through times when every day seems to be a jumble and nothing seems to fit in the way we think it should. Health, wealth, relationships – it’s as if everything has been thrown up in the air and there is no pattern to how it lands. At times like that it can be really difficult to see how things were, should or could be. It can feel like a real effort to make sense of the chaos, either in life or in your mind. Sometimes it’s difficult to remember exactly who you are and to have doubts about the role you perform in the grand scheme of things. It sometimes feels easier to just “fit in” wherever you can, to disappear into the crowd. We may be able to make

sense of those feelings by seeing life as a jigsaw puzzle. Each and every one of us is a small, individual piece in the puzzle. Some of us are the same colour, whilst others are different shades and patterns. Some of us have lumps and bumps, whilst others have curves. Some of us are small whilst others have a larger surface area. Some have straight aspects to us that are well defined whilst others are a little crazy in design. We are all the shape, size and colour we need to be to play our part in the grand design. Sometimes it can be tempting to look at other pieces of the puzzle and see them as different. They are – they’re supposed to be! Sometimes it can be tempting to try to be exactly the same as another piece, but that won’t work. In order to find our place in the puzzle of life, we

need to recognise the fact that we are exactly as we should be. If we were all the same colour, imagine how boring, difficult and ultimately pointless the puzzle would be. If we were all the same size and shape, we would find it impossible to fit together. That’s why opposites attract – the differences are where we fit together best. Our differences are what makes the puzzle interesting, challenging and enjoyable. When we do a jigsaw puzzle we can sometimes take what seems an eternity, trying to fit the one piece to everything else. We can narrowly focus our attention on pushing that one piece into every gap desperately trying to make it fit. By doing so the piece becomes frayed and worn at the edges, its lustre dims and it becomes jaded. If we only sit back, relax and play

the puzzle with a wider view, we actually look at the bigger picture. We can get so focused on our part, that we forget that the bigger picture is a guide that helps us in our quest to complete the puzzle. When we take a moment to look from a distance, the correct place for that piece of puzzle can sometimes leap out at us with very little effort. In life, the picture on the box is constantly changing, but that just makes the puzzle more exciting. If you’re feeling puzzled or out of place, try thinking of yourself as that unique, individual piece of jigsaw puzzle. You don’t need to be like any other. You don’t need to force yourself into gaps that don’t quite fit. By sitting back and recognising your individuality, size and shape for what they are, you may find that YOU are the missing PEACE.

I have been working for myself since I was 25 years old, just after I finished my training at Bath College of Further Education back in 1995 for New Opportunities in Holistic Therapies. Once I started this work I loved it and have never looked back. I studied for five years, getting as many qualifications as I could in alternative therapies, and then went off travelling. I ended up in Malawi in Africa and managed a lodge there. Four years later I moved to Australia and added more qualifications to my knowledge. NLP, coaching, hypnotherapy, flower essences, journey work – I was in love with the mind and how that works. I moved back to Saltford in 2010 and I have managed to build a good business while back in England. Since moving back, I have also added an international health and wellness company to my business, where I show people how to buy safer, healthier products online. They are vegan, with no nasties, green, and extremely good for you. I also enable people to build a global business, where they turn an expense into an income. I hold workshops in skincare, advising on healthy products, detox and clean eating and vegan makeup.

and in five years to have built a successful business has been a great achievement. I am now focusing on the international market. The best part is, I can run my business from home. This gives me the freedom I need so I can have a business and also be with my family.

So overall my business is health and wellness on all levels from the inside and outside. What service do you provide to the people of Keynsham? I specialise in fertility coaching and also focus on grief, depression and abuse. Fertility was a very personal journey of mine. After seven years of trying to have a baby I gave up, but three years later found out I had fallen pregnant naturally. So at the tender age of 46 I now have a nine-month-old. My clients call me the fertility goddess and I have so far had 100 per cent success. It was so good it even worked on myself and I had totally let go of that part of my life.

I help people let go of their emotional baggage so they don’t have to have it. We are so powerful, so when we learn to harness what is already within, the opportunity to heal the self is amazing. I work with people who are ready and willing to change their lives for the best and always get the most amazing results. I am blessed with amazing clients. What is the best part of running your business and working in Keynsham? I love what I do! To enable people to live their lives how they want, to feel truly happy with who they are – what better job is there? It is lovely to come back home

What makes your service different from other companies? There are a lot of great therapists out there that do similar things to myself and they are all great. The only thing that makes me different is me, my personal experience and life skills that I have learnt along the way. I do what I do because it has been part of my journey and I know we don’t need to carry our pain with us to be free. Every therapist has a great niche that they add and that is great. So this is mine and if I can enable people to experience freedom then it is such an honour. What are your plans for the future of the business? I am in the UK for now and I am building my international business so I can work between the UK and Australia. It is all very exciting. My favourite saying is: “Be the change you wish to see” from Ghandi. I love this and do my best to live by this. May 28-29 The Ship Inn in Keynsham is staging its fourth annual free community music festival. Shipfest 2016 will take place on the weekend of May 28 and 29. This is the first year the festival will run over two days with organisers adding the Sunday for a more family feel. The beer garden and petanque areas are transformed into a festival venue with stage, barbecue area and outside bar. The only thing left to complete the weekend is the weather, but in previous years, the atmosphere hasn't been dampened when it did rain. In fact, say organisers, it even added to the community atmosphere with people dancing in their wellies. The festival starts on Saturday, May 28, and the music kicks off at 3.50pm. The line-up features a wide range of acts, from funk and reggae through to some bigger bands

"We rely on local sponsorship for the festival to take place and we can't thank the local businesses who have donated money to the festival enough," said Richard Weymouth, festival co-ordinator and landlord of The Ship Inn. “The festival is free, but we do encourage people to help out by buying a festival wristband to show their support.”

Glory for swimmers in Glasgow Photo: Alex Whitehead/SWpix.com

Members of Keynsham Swimming Club travelled to Glasgow in April to compete in the annual British Swimming Championships, writes our correspondent. There was added anticipation ahead of this year's event as it also acted as the selection event for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Qualifying times for entry to the championships were very challenging in this Olympic year but three of Keynsham's junior swimmers had achieved the standard and made the long trip to Glasgow's Tollcross pool, which had previously hosted the swimming events for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In the junior category, Keynsham's representatives were Ben Lawton (17) and Jess Podger (14), who each qualified for one event in Glasgow, and Tom Sinclair (18), who had qualified for four races across the six days of competition. Ben and Jess both swam well in the tense atmosphere of the heats of their events and were

Siobhan-Marie O’Connor just shy of personal best times in their respective events, the 100m Breaststroke and 400m Freestyle. Tom put together an excellent series of swims over the course of the week qualifying for the junior finals in three out of his four events, placing eighth in the 100m Freestyle, fifth in the 100m Butterfly and taking the bronze medal in the final event of the championships, the 200m Freestyle, in a new personal best time of 1:54.00. Keynsham were also represented in the senior event category by Amelia Maughan,

who swam the 200m Freestyle and was just shy of a final place following her heat swim. Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Keynsham's World and Commonwealth medalist, was hoping to secure her place on the Team GB squad for Rio, having been the youngest member of the team at London 2012. Nothing was guaranteed, however, with qualifying standards for Rio having been set extremely high by the selectors with some events requiring British record times to be sure of a place. Siobhan, as always, did not disappoint her Keynsham supporters and rose to the challenge with some great racing in her four events, comfortably securing her place as part of the Team GB squad, which was formally announced a few days after the close of the event in Glasgow. After being crowned British Champion in the 100m Freestyle, Siobhan confirmed her place on the plane to Rio with another British Championship title and a time within the

55

automatic selection criteria in her top-ranked event, the 200m Individual Medley. Her time of 2:09.66 is the second fastest time in the world this year and she'll be looking to outpace world champion and world record holder Katinka Hosszu for gold in Rio. Siobhan completed her campaign in Glasgow with heat swims on the morning of the final day, which took her into the finals of the 100m Breaststroke and 100m Butterfly finals. In the evening finals just a few hours later she secured her third British title of the week in the Breaststroke and, with barely enough time catch her breath, ended the championships with a fourth place in the Butterfly, narrowly missing another medal. With Siobhan's place at her second Olympics now guaranteed alongside GB teammates including James Guy and world record holder Adam Peaty, everyone at Keynsham Swimming Club will be cheering on the GB team as they head for Rio in the summer.

Keynsham’s Bethany joins stars of cycling in Tour de Yorkshire

A Keynsham student joined one of the largest women’s cycling events outside the Olympics last month, lining up at the start alongside some of the sport’s biggest names. Riding for the Boot Out Breast Cancer cycling team, eighteen-year-old Bethany Taylor competed in the Ladies Asda Tour de Yorkshire on April 30, where women’s world champion Lizzie Armistead and multiple Olympic and world Para-cycling champion Dame Sarah Storey were among the line-up. Starting at Otley and finishing 135km away in Doncaster, the women riders tackled the same course as the men, who raced later in the day and included Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sky’s Luke Rowe and Peter Kennaugh. Riding in a group behind the leaders, alongside Olympic silver medallist Emma Pooley and a

Wellsway pupil Bethany Taylor, centre, rode with the Boot Out Breast Cancer cycling team on April 30 number of the British Academy team, a crash at the 85km mark spelled the end of Wellsway student Bethany’s race, however. Two riders touched wheels,

causing a number of others to fall, and Bethany landed heavily on her back, meaning she was unable to finish. Despite being bruised and

sore, however, Bethany was back in the saddle the following day racing at Penrith and Shap in Cumbria the day after that. She will then be back to training ahead of Round Three of the British Elite road series in Lincoln on May 15 and for the Matrix Tour series where she will compete in three rounds on circuits around various city centres. Bethany began her cycling career as a 12-year-old at Newport Velodrome and joined the Podium Ambition Development Squad at the age of 17, managed by husband and wife team Barney Storey (OBE) and Dame Sarah Storey, and has her sights set on cycling professionally. She is also a member of Keynsham-based Salt and Sham Cycle Club, joining their regular rides in the local countryside.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field Keynsham Town’s First XI had a topsy turvy April, but finished their Toolstation Western League Division One campaign on a high with a rare away win. The month started with a comprehensive dismantling of Portishead Town on Easter Monday, which showed what a force to be reckoned with the Ks have become at Crown Fields this season. First-half goals from Ben Harris, Sam Duggan and Aaron Childs put Keynsham firmly in charge at the break. In the second half, young Cameron Shorney scored his first senior goal with a stunning 28-yard free-kick in only his third start for the First Team. The next game saw Friday Night Football return to Crown Fields for the second time this

keynshamvoice

season, as Keynsham were held to a 2-2 draw by Chippenham Park. After a below-par first half from the Ks, the second half was one of the best this season from a neutral point of view. The hosts had no luck in front of goal and when the visitors broke away after their keeper fell on the ball on the goal-line to go two up, it looked like it wasn’t going to be Keynsham’s night. However, goals from Sam Duggan and Ben Harris in the last 15 minutes got them back to all square and both teams had chances to steal all three points in injury time. There were plenty of groundhoppers in attendance and they were very impressed with the standard of football on show. The following Tuesday saw a thumping 8-1 win over basement boys Bishop Sutton, with Ben Harris scoring the Ks’ second hat-trick of the season. Nathan Curnock at last turned some of his thrusting runs from left-back into goals with a brace, and further goals by Kieran Adams, Pat Davison and an own goal sent the visitors home with their tails between their legs. The club’s away-day woes continued four days later though,

The Ks in action against Radstock Town earlier in the season as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at lowly Devizes Town. Keynsham started sluggishly, conceding an early goal from a corner, but grew into the game as half-time approached and dominated the second half. However, they just couldn’t find the finishing product that their football deserved. A crisp Tuesday evening saw the Ks’ last home game of the season, with Warminster Town the visitors. This was a tight affair and was looking like being only the second goalless draw at the AJN Stadium this season. However, three minutes from the end, Nathan Curnock burst into the box to convert Aaron Childs’ cross to give Keynsham all three points and end a fantastic home league campaign on a high. The penultimate league game at a blustery Almondsbury UWE saw the Ks slip to another 1-0 defeat. In a game similar to the previous away match, the visitors were slow out of the blocks, although there was an element of luck with Almondsbury’s goal, as a cross caught the wind and deceived Ks keeper Ash Wintle. Keynsham’s second half dominance failed to be converted into goals. Saturday, April 30, saw the curtain come down on the league season with a superb 3-2 victory at high-flying Cheddar. The Cheesemen were still in with a chance of automatic promotion and went in at the break a goal to the good after an even first half. However, an excellent fightback saw Keynsham score three goals in 13 minutes midway through the second period to turn the game on its head. Tom Harris equalised, before Ben Harris and Harry Churchley put the Ks firmly in charge. Despite conceding a harsh stoppage time penalty, the Ks hung on for a thoroughly deserved 3-2 win. With other teams still having to finish their campaign, the Ks will finish no lower than 9th in the table, which is a remarkable improvement on the last few seasons.

Unfortunately this issue went to print before the Ks visited Hengrove Athletic on Bank Holiday Monday for their League Cup Quarter Final. Club secretary Julian French said: “Looking back on a wonderful season, there are too many positives to list here. The management team of Chris, Sean and Russ have worked tirelessly, resulting in our best season for six years. On the pitch, it has been gratifying to see so many of our Under-18 team of last season make the progression to Western League football successfully, giving us a perfect blend of youth and experience. The fact that no fewer than 18 players have scored for us this season is also testament to the sort of football we like to play. Off the field, we have boosted our average home league attendance from 53 in 2014/15 to 88 this season, so I would like to thank all our fans for your fantastic support. I know the players really appreciate the ‘Keynsham Roar’ which has greeted the 60+ goals we have scored at Crown Fields this season! “I would also like to thank the many sponsors of the First Team this year. In times of rising running costs, sponsorship is the lifeblood of a club like Keynsham Town and I am grateful that so many people have been willing to help us. In addition to the existing home shirt sponsorship of Smart Computers and KitCo, we welcomed a new sponsor in The Old Bank, who bought a new away kit and have also provided monthly vouchers for our Players of the Month and raffle prizes for our home games. Many of you have also sponsored our players, which again has been a massive boost to our finances.” The club will be holding its end of season awards evening in the Conservative Club, High Street, Keynsham at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 14. Admission is free and all supporters, sponsors, family and friends are invited to celebrate the excellent season.

Keynsham Rugby beaten by league winners Matson in dying minutes by Rob Breckon Second-placed Keynsham made the eagerly anticipated trip up the M5 to face top-of-the-league side Matson on April 16. The amber and blacks took a coach full of faithful supporters and had made five changes to the previous week’s side that crushed Bristol Harlequins 72-3. The visitors started the game with great tempo. Retaining possession well and making good yards with each carry, the early pressure told and lock Corey Talbot sliced through a gap to touch down under the posts. Centre Toby Williams converted. 0-7. Ten minutes later, however, a knock on in the midfield allowed Matson’s fly half to stab a cross field kick into the hands of the waiting winger who sprinted in from 40 metres. 5-7. Following the restart, Keynsham again retained the ball well and worked their way back towards Matson’s try line with strong carries from Talbot and

flanker Callum Fennel. A six-man line-out catch and drive powered over the try line but was deemed to be held up letting the home side off. Another spilt ball by Keynsham provided Matson with their second try and lead for the first time in the game with 25 minutes played. 12-7. The momentum then shifted again and Keynsham were on the front foot and controlling both possession and territory. Following a number of solid phases and another maul held up over the line a scrum ensued. The solid platform found fly half Joe Davies who scored, making it 12-14. With Matson’s heads seemingly down as the half time whistle arrived, Keynsham capitalised and touched down for a third time. Another powerful five-metre scrum forced a penalty and Fennel acted quickly to tap and go and dive over. Half time score 12-19. A riled Matson started the

second half the stronger and were near to scoring early on, only for winger Marlon Dorsett to bring down Matson’s centre just metres from the try line. However, a handful of penalties allowed Matson to launch an attacking five-metre line-out and after a number of close phases they burrowed over to tie the score at 19 all. Keynsham then showed what had earned them a play-off shot this season. A number of strong carries allowed scrum half Sam Challenger to dart through a gap and subsequently find Davies to score his second try of the game with 20 minutes remaining. 19-26. A missed conversion then meant the hosts trailed by two points, 24-26. As the game entered the final ten minutes and the pressure increased, a forward pass from Matson provided Keynsham with a platform to attack from. Another solid scrum created an overlap and winger Adam Tes-

dale crashed over for what looked likely to secure the win. 24-33. However, Matson’s unbeaten record didn’t happen by chance and they hit back. Following a dubious tackle in which Keynsham’s reaction provided Matson with a penalty, the home side kicked to the corner and thereby caught and drove over to take the scores to 29-33. In the final minutes, which seemed to last far longer, Keynsham went down to 13 men following two successive yellow cards. Keynsham’s defence remained resolute until the final play where a short-range effort crept through and stole the victory from Keynsham. Full-time score Matson 36, Keynsham 33. Captain Jack Weston said: “It was a fantastic performance by the guys and it was a gutting way to end the game, but we can take a lot of positives from it.” The following week, Keynsham hosted Burnham-on-Sea, winning the match 28-7.
