Residents will get say on facilities, says council

Cautious welcome for talks on leisure centre

Council leaders’ reassurances that Keynsham residents will be consulted on the future of the town’s leisure centre and the facilities it will offer have been met with “cautious optimism”, say campaigners. A floorplan from new contractor GLL, which took over the management of B&NES’ leisure services in July, sparked an outcry at a public consultation event in Keynsham in September as it showed no

sports hall, squash courts or poolside spectator seating in the new building. In just days, the newly formed Keynsham Residents’ Leisure Action Group collected 1,000 signatures calling for more consultation on the new development, a figure that continues to grow as the group aims to get the issue onto the agenda at the next full B&NES Council meeting. Council leaders have moved

to reassure residents, however, saying the plans were at a very early stage as they looked at location options and that it was “the very first stage of a longer consultation process”. Councillor Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), the Council’s Cabinet member for community services, said: “We have a really good opportunity to provide new facilities and opportunities Continued on Page 2

Concerns remain From Page 1 for exercise in and around Keynsham. We want to ensure we have really excellent facilities with wide appeal to the many users who value the social and physical benefits of exercise. “Working with our new leisure provider GLL we will consult with key user groups as we develop the detailed leisure centre proposals next year. We will ensure that the future leisure provision in the Keynsham area links into our Fit for Life strategy and the needs of our current and future population.” Workshops on the leisure centre and its facilities are scheduled to take place from spring 2016, before a site is secured in 2016 and designs are drawn up, with a target of 2017 for construction to start. The leisure centre’s current site at Riverside emerged as residents’ preferred option at the September consultation meeting, over Ashton Way car park and Hawkswell Field. Town councillor David Biddleston, whose motion that the town council should demand further consultation was backed by his fellow councillors on October 13, said a growing town should expect to keep its existing sports facilities as a minimum.

He said: “I can understand some of the scepticism but I’m cautiously optimistic and very grateful that significant consultation will be taking place over the next year or so. I do think that Keynsham residents will need to continue to pay close attention to developments and not let it slip by unnoticed.” Concerns have been raised by campaigners over GLL’s track record in other parts of the country, however, citing Swindon, where a climbing wall was closed and sports hall activities were cut back to make way for a trampoline park, despite a petition from users and with councillors unable to block the move, the Wiltshire Times reported. Sam Bell, who was among the residents who spoke at Keynsham Town Council’s October meeting against the loss of facilities such as the sports hall, said she hoped people would continue to sign the petition to show strength of feeling. She said: “My concern will be that that council will end up being forced by GLL to offer only profitable activities and therefore the squash courts, sports hall and spectator seating will be lost. “I am also concerned by the ‘in and around Keynsham’

but leisure centre talks welcomed sentiment as I am worried that we will be told the facilities at Wellsway and Broadlands suffice for the loss of a sports hall. The issue is that these halls are likely to be inaccessible to residents during school hours and there have been problems trying to book Wellsway in the evenings, for example for the local badminton club. “It is essential that the sports hall remains accessible in daytime and is in a location where those less mobile can access it.” One organisation that makes full use of the poolside spectator seating at Keynsham Leisure Centre is Keynsham Swimming Club, where Olympian SiobhanMarie O’Connor first trained, as secretary Dave Beament explained the volunteer-run club relies on the support received from swimmers’ parents. He said the club was positive about the new development, however. “We are all very excited about the new leisure centre in Keynsham and the opportunities

for our swimmers,” he said. “I have been in contact with B&NES for several years now concerning the new centre and have always received from them honest and clear responses to any points I have raised. I have been reassured that the current plan is outline only and full consultation with users will take place once the detail is being worked on. “Clearly spectator space is of the utmost importance to Keynsham Swimming Club and I’m confident that our views will be taken into full account.” Around £17 million of funding

for GLL’s leisure centre schemes in Bath and North East Somerset was approved by the Cabinet on September 9 to allow the refurbishment of Bath Leisure Centre to go ahead, leading some to question whether the plans for Keynsham’s facilities could have been raised at this point. The full funding for Keynsham’s new leisure centre is not due to be approved until a site has been agreed and more work has been done to the plans, documents from the meeting show. Councillor Charles Gerrish (Keynsham North), Cabinet

member for finance and efficiency, said: “The current administration supports, and remains committed to, the investment in new and improved leisure centres in both Bath and Keynsham – but we want to take the time to ensure the right facilities are provided. “We are therefore grateful for all the responses to the recent consultation and will be taking on board all the comments received as more detailed plans are worked upon. “The next step is to decide which site to select, then undertake further consultation on the facilities to be provided, after which more detailed plans will be produced. “In the event that the site selected is Riverside, it has been assessed there is sufficient capacity within the footprint to meet a range of leisure facilities.” The leisure centre petition and action group updates can be found by Googling “change. org Keynsham Leisure Centre consultation”.

Future still in doubt as fire station As Keynsham Fire Station closed its doors on November 1, there was still no news on when a decision would be taken about what will happen to its Temple Street site. The station closed its doors at the start of the month ahead of the team’s move to the new fire station being built at Hicks Gate. Firefighters from Brislington will be responding to incidents in the Keynsham area in the meantime, before work is finished on the new station in early 2016. The future of the Temple Street site, however, is still no clearer as we went to print with no date set for a decision on whether the fire service’s headquarters will be relocating to the town. The move was proposed as part of the fire service’s money-Materials saving Investing for the Future programme last year, but just weeks ago it was revealed a site in Emersons Green is also being considered. The Hicks Gate fire station recently reached the halfway point in its construction and both

Residents urged as BBC Rickshaw

Should I get my pet neutered? Unless you are planning to breed, we would almost always say yes. The most obvious reason to neuter is the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, but there are also important health benefits, behavioural benefits and even social responsibilities to consider. 1. Spaying your female will stop her from coming into season and eliminates the possibility of unwanted and expensive pregnancies. It also helps prevent many life-threatening cancers, and womb infections. 2. In males, neutering can greatly reduce testosteronedriven behaviour such as spraying or scent marking and straying from home. It can also help prevent prostate problems and testicular cancer later on in life. 3. Rabbits reproduce much faster than dogs and cats, and from a much earlier age. Unspayed female rabbits also have a 95 per cent chance of developing uterine cancer before the age of four. 4. Neutering helps fight pet overpopulation which could

otherwise lead to animals being euthanased or suffering as strays. Surgical developments have meant that female bitch spays can now be done via keyhole surgery. Keyhole spays are safer and less invasive; your dog will have much smaller wounds, less post-operative pain and a much quicker recovery. We have found that it is now by far the most popular method for spaying dogs. In summary, neutering can lead to a longer and better quality of life for your beloved companion. If you would like to know more, don’t hesitate to contact us at Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700.

BBC One presenter Matt Baker is calling on people in Keynsham and Saltford to line the streets on November 10 to cheer on a team of young riders cycling 470 miles for Children in Need. The Rickshaw Challenge will see six young people who have been supported by projects funded by the appeal set off from Land’s End on November 6, reaching their final destination Elstree in East London in time for the BBC Children in Need Appeal Show on Friday, November 13. The One Show presenter Matt Baker will be cycling alongside the team throughout the challenge, which will reach Keynsham and Saltford on Day 5 as the team leave Bristol via the A4, heading for Winchester by the end of the day. Speaking of this year’s challenge, Matt said: “It’s that time of year again, and this year’s Team Rickshaw will be warming up for their biggest challenge yet. It’s going to be tough but with your help we’re hoping to raise more much-needed money for BBC Children in Need. “We have a truly inspiring group taking on the challenge, and they all have brilliant stories to tell, so please do get behind them and do all you can to show your support, it really will help make a difference.” Co-host Alex Jones will be joining the team on the road and reporting from the studio during the challenge and said: “I am delighted that the Rickshaw Challenge is returning again this year, every year we are astounded at the support people across the UK give to the challenge, and we hope this year will be no different. “I know first-hand just how difficult it can be, so I am asking you all to dig deep and show your support for this year’s team.” The team of young riders

includes 18-year-old Erin from Scotland, who suffers with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and is a member of Arthritis Care, and 16-year-old Lucy from South Yorkshire, who has cerebral palsy, deafness and sight problems and attends the Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project. They will be joined by George, 17, from Surrey, whose dad died following a cycling accident in 2012 and who has been supported by bereavement group Tommy D, and 17-year-old Amira from the West Midlands whose elder sister Elle requires 24-hour care following a brain haemorrhage – both sisters are now supported by The Children’s Trust. Completing the team are Elliot, 16, from Essex, who has battled a rare blood cancer with the support of Teens Unite and is riding in memory of good friend Sadie, and George, 16, from London, who has Down’s syndrome and attends Pro Corda, which uses music to allow disabled and special education needs children to progress socially and personally. Since 2011, the Rickshaw Challenge has raised over £7.9 million for BBC Children in Need, which has gone to projects supporting disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. One Show viewers will be able to follow Team Rickshaw’s progress each day, and updates will also be available online at bbc.co.uk/pudsey. To support the challenge, you can donate either £5 or £10 by text. To donate £5 text the word TEAM to 70705 or to donate £10 text GIVE to 70710. Families were well catered for with Peppa Pig and Ironman on hand to greet young visitors as well as face painting, a bouncy castle and sports taster sessions. Many of the sports clubs based at Somerdale had stalls at the event, alongside a number of local charities and members of the team from Aquaterra, which runs the new centre, who were fundraising throughout the day to raise money to buy a frame for frame football sessions for disabled youngsters and to support a cancer survivorship programme at the Pavilion, involving exercise classes and rehabilitation for cancer survivors. On the terrace outside over-

looking the sports pitches food was being served up to hungry guests by head chef Aaron while others relaxed in the sports bar or looked around the conference and wedding suites and gym. General manager Patrick Shanahan said: “For me it’s a wonderful facility with a brilliant mix of functions going on here with the social, sporting and community sides, creating a hub for the area. official launch at a busy open day

Somerdale Pavilion general manager Patrick Shanahan Somerdale’s past wasn’t overlooked with a display by former chocolate factory workers Mike Burt and Hugh Evans, who alongside an array of Cadbury’s and Fry’s memorabilia, plates of chocolate and even Roman artefacts, had the apostrophe from the Cadbury’s sign on display. Hugh said he thought the new Pavilion was a “fantastic” facility and that the community should “celebrate the old while embracing the new”.

Representing another of the site’s long-standing connections was Fry’s Bowling Club, which will be celebrating its centenary in 2017 and has been playing at Somerdale for around 70 years. Chairman Andy Kendall and vice-chairman Roy Cocking were running a stall at the open day and Andy said he hoped the new venue would attract more people to use the facilities – and join the club.

Still committed to ward and its issues

I would like to say thank you to the 195 electors who voted for me in the recent town council by election. Your support for my campaign is much appreciated, and although unsuccessful on this occasion, please be assured I intend to remain as before an active campaigner on local issues, particularly those affecting our Keynsham South ward. I congratulate Councillor Edwards on her election and wish her well for the future. A number of queries were raised with us during the campaign, and I will endeavour to respond to those still outstanding at the earliest opportunity, again looking forward to further dialogue on matters important to

those who raised them initially. I remain committed to the Keynsham South ward in which we live. Andy Halliday Candidate, Keynsham by-election

Make forum a voice for the community

The Keynsham Area Forum was established just over a year ago to represent collectively the views and interests of Keynsham, Whitchurch, Saltford, Compton Dando, Corston, Farmborough and Chelwood. Following the recent AGM, I have been elected as the chairman and the vice-chairman is Adrian Inker. Our aim is to refresh and drive forward this forum to be an effective voice for the local area and help prioritise the issues that matter most. We aim to work with all the public services to ensure they are aware of the concerns and aspirations of the local community. How will we do this? Currently we have meetings that are attended by Keynsham town council, the parish

councils within the forum area, B&NES Council, the police, health professionals, district councillors, local community groups and individual members of the community. Adrian and I are very eager to encourage much more grass roots attendance and that is why we are inviting any group or body interested, to send along representatives to join in the discussion. We would also welcome more individual members of the public to attend. Normally lasting two hours, the evening is split, the first hour is an open public forum for attendees to bring their worries or wishes and the other hour a main topic or update from a specific and invited body – for example, Sirona. So in closing, may I seek your support through your attendance. If you are interested then the next meeting will be on November 24 at 6pm and it will be held in The Space (above the One Stop Shop, Temple Street, Keynsham). At the meeting we will be hosting the annual Council Budget Fair where you will be able to ask the council questions about their fouryear financial plan and see a presentation about the West of England Joint Spatial Plan. We look forward to seeing you then. Alan Hale (Cllr) Chairman of Keynsham Area Forum Adrian Inker (@67 & Butterflies Haven) Vice Chairman of Keynsham Area Forum

Less than a half mile too far for school? This is my first letter, but not good news as I am very upset with B&NES’ admission criteria for infant schools, in particular Chandag Infant.

November, 2015

For this year’s 2015 intake, the furthest distance in a straight line from applicants’ homes to Chandag Infant School has more than halved, from 1.227 miles to 0.457 miles. Anyone living further away, above Manor Road, with no sibling already at the school, cannot get a place – this is 0.457 miles. I feel I have wasted money on nurseries in Keynsham when I should have attended nurseries further away in Saltford or the other side of Keynsham, so my child could have made friends in the correct infant school. I live at the top of the Chandag estate and now have to drive past Chandag School to go to the next nearest school, adding to the traffic chaos. No wonder they had to build a mini roundabout at the bottom of Chandag Road. I went through the appeal process with other local residents to no joy, it is a disgrace. My argument was that it was easier for people not living on the Chandag estate to drive to different schools. We do not drive in straight-line distances. Other people live across the valley or busy roads so that the actual distance is much further than a straight line. The cold-hearted data supplied by BANES shows in 2014/15 the furthest direct line distance between home address and school was 1.227 miles and in 2013/14 it was 1.167 miles. This year shows the furthest distance was 0.457 miles with 21 children refused places. It is a scandal and B&NES shows no consideration and hides behind the admission criteria. If people wonder why the traffic is so bad, there are 21 cars driving past Chandag School who are not allowed in. John Via email

We didn’t ask to lose leisure centre

S

As a paid-up member and frequent user of Keynsham Leisure Centre, I am writing to strongly protest against the proposal to get rid of our current centre and replace it with a fitness suite. I play badminton with a group of friends weekly in the sports hall as well as using the pool and attending classes. The sports hall is used by a large sector of the community for badminton, table tennis, football and other sports. It is hired for birthday parties, used by the children’s holiday day club and I have seen wheelchair basketball being played there and drum majorettes practicing. The squash courts are also well used. Banes talk about a the use of space but what about choice? People want to play the sports that they enjoy and are suitable for them. Not everyone wants to do fitness classes or join a gym, many people want the chance to play competitive and team sports. They are fun. In an age when the Government is pushing the health benefits of sport, why

are you proposing to take away existing facilities and substitute something less comprehensive? As far as I know, the people of Keynsham have not asked for our leisure centre to be knocked down and replaced. It is a little tatty around the edges but it functions perfectly well. If B&NES say that they cannot afford to replace existing facilities, then please just update it a little. Basically, if you can’t build something better don’t bother! Sarah Shorter

Into the home straight for Santa Dash Final preparations are being made for the 2015 Saltford Santa Dash which takes place on Sunday, December 6. There are two events taking place: a Mini Santa run for five to 12-year-olds in the sports ground at Saltford Sports & Social Club, and an adult five-mile fun run for runners of all levels over 12. The course starts at the sports grounds and winds around the back streets of Saltford and Keynsham. There is also plenty of entertainment for all the family before and during the event including a choir, a mass warm-up and stalls selling festive goodies, refreshments and gifts. Roger Spooner, who heads the organising team, said: “The Santa Dash has proved to be a wonderful community fun run event raising money for local charities. Runners aged from five to 85 years and over have enjoyed participating in the day’s events, while local residents have lined the streets to cheer on this Santa spectacular. Some 700 Santas running en masse is quite some sight to behold. Once again, this year, we are grateful for our

sponsors who have been incredibly supportive and we have lined up an array of entertainment to boost the festive atmosphere on the day.” There’s still time to register to run in the Santa Dash by going to www.saltfordsantadash. webs.com. Money raised will be donated to two local charities, Time2Share and the Carers’ Centre (Bath & NE Somerset). Roger added: “We are nearly ready to go, so we are now calling all Santas to sign up and finalise their training ready for this great event.”

TimeOut Youth Centre TimeOut Youth Centre operates Drop In sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays 7-9.30pm for 13-19-year-olds. There is a 50p entry fee and activities include cooking sessions every Tuesday, music studio recording, filming project, a female-only session, running club on Thursdays, table tennis, pool, computers for internet use, CV workshops and job searches. Wednesdays at TimeOut Youth Centre are project and workshop nights and the projects over November include a drug awareness workshop, relationships, health and beauty and how to beat the winter blues. Wednesday sessions are free, however there are limited places per project or workshop so if interested make sure you get your name down quickly. l After-school club As of November, TimeOut will be running an afterschool club on Tuesdays from 4-6pm and

this will be open for young people aged 10-14. There will be structured activities as well as a homework club session. Entrance is 50p. l Around the World in 80 Meals The Around The World In 80 Meals project on Thursdays (4pm-6pm) has been very positive. Within this project, young people get a chance not only to prepare and cook

a three-course meal but also the centre is made into a mini bistro where young people set up the tables with the correct cutlery and tablecloths, pictured. This gives young people the opportunity to learn social etiquettes relating to eating at a restaurant as well as developing social skills such as communication, working as a team and problem solving. There are limited spaces available for this project.

Winter Festival

TimeOut will be open on the evening of the Winter Festival with a programme of activities relating to Christmas and Winter. Entrance is 50p to include a free hot chocolate. This session will be open to young people aged 10 to 19.

October half-term

Keynsham Youth Service held several projects over the half term break. They included a trip to Longleat Safari Park where young people had an opportunity to hold creatures such as snakes and tarantulas. A day trip to Cheddar Gorge saw young people exploring the caves as well as visiting the museum of prehistory. In TimeOut daytime sessions, young people were pumpkin carving and getting involved with Halloweenthemed cake baking.

Neighbourhood Task Force (The Hoodies)

The Hoodies have decided on their winter theme of “connecting with other generations and they will be visiting several residential care homes for the elderly with cakes baked at TimeOut. Young people feel, especially as it gets dark and cold, that it is important to reach out to others. If you would like to get involved, please contact Damien.

Challenges ‘prepare students for success’ The return to school has proved to be a busy one for the boys on the Scholarship Programme at QEH boys’ school, with a series of retreat days held for Year 8 and 9 pupils. This programme is part of the school’s Gifted and Talented provision, and aims to challenge the most academically able boys. Based in the Brecon Beacons for the day, Year 8 pupils explored themes of inspiration and creativity while students from Year 9 spent their day in the Mendip Hills focusing on themes such

as civilisation and how they might better contribute to society. Headmaster at QEH Stephen Holliday said: “This encourages real independence of learning ensuring our students are better prepared for success not just at A level but at university and in their chosen professions.” Initial Year 7 entry to the Scholarship Programme will be offered to boys who score exceptionally highly in the entrance examination on Saturday, January 9 and 16, 2016.

‘Cancer researcher of the future’ Oscar gets visit from the experts

A Saltford schoolboy who stunned medics with his complex suggestion for altering DNA to fight cancer has been paid a visit by leading researchers at his primary school. Nine-year-old Oscar Sawyer impressed scientists working at Cancer Research UK when he wrote to the charity to share his idea for a cure after losing his grandfather to the disease. Wanting to inspire young cancer researchers of the future, a team from Cancer Research UK and the University of Bristol dropped in at Saltford Primary School where they held a series of workshops for Oscar and his classmates. Explaining why he wrote to the charity, Oscar said: “I think cancer is a horrible thing. A little boy in my school died and my Grampy died because of it and I want to help stop it.” His idea, which he described to his mother at the age of just eight, was to take DNA from

Oscar Sawyer with the Cancer Research UK and Bristol University researchers and above right slow-growing cells and put it in a person with cancer so that the cancerous cells would grow more slowly and allow more time for the cells’ DNA checkers to spot the faults and fix them. Dr Samuel Godfrey, science communications manager at Cancer Research UK, said:

“We have never received such a clever idea from a child of Oscar’s age. He has really taken the time to think it through logically. Although we can’t directly use slow-growing cells to treat cancer, elements of his ideas are being used in existing treatments that target faulty DNA or help to

slow the growth of cancer cells. We suggested he might like to turn his attention to fixing a molecule called P53 which often goes wrong in cancer cells. “We are making great progress in beating cancer, but there’s so much more to do. It’s encouraging to see the next

Host of creatures to join zoo’s Simon at wildlife group’s themed evening

generation taking an interest in cancer research, it’s people like Oscar who will become the scientists of the future.” Oscar’s mum, Jo Chambers, said: “Oscar has always been really interested in genetics and wants to learn as much as he can about it. He was over the moon to get a reply from Cancer Research UK, his face was a picture as he read the letter. “It really has made a great impression on him, and he has gone to the library to get more books out to try to find more about P53. He really wants to help find cures for cancer, so that nobody has to lose someone they love to the disease in the future.”

Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham Group is inviting people to join them for an insight into the country’s zoos and a close encounter with some of the creatures you might expect to find in them. Here, they tell us more about next month’s themed evening. It’s a long time since Bristol Zoo was home to Alfred the gorilla, but he is bound to feature at Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group’s third annual themed event this November, with Simon Garrett, head of learning, at Bristol Zoo Gardens. His interesting talk of “Zoos – past, present and future” will be a chance for the young and old to marvel over how our zoos have changed and their new role in conservation going forward. The evening will also delight the younger generation with games and activities, including

Bristol Zoo’s most famous former resident, Alfred the gorilla dressing up in giant snake skins, examining pond wildlife, plus enjoying hands-on bugs and beasties, also courtesy of the Zoo – shake hands with a tarantula or stroke a giant stick insect! Not for the faint-hearted – but this is not obligatory! Simon, appropriately, started off catching minnows in the Thames and finding woodlice

under bits of wood, and he is passionate about engaging all ages in the natural world. It looks likely to be a great family evening. The event takes place on Friday, November 13, at Wellsway School, Chandag Road, starting at 7pm, doors open from 6.30pm. Tickets are available from Smiths Jewellers, in the High Street, Keynsham, or on the door priced £2.50, children under-16 £1. Keynsham Group are pleased yet again to have the support of Wellsway School Green Team in this venture. The Green Team is the school’s youth group which meets to learn more about the natural environment both within the school grounds and the local area. Small businesses ‘bringing back the love’ to Keynsham High Street A group of Keynsham small business owners are hoping to have the best December ever by working together to encourage shoppers to keep it local this Christmas. The local entrepreneurs are working on a range of initiatives to attract people to the High Street and to other ventures based in the town, including social media campaigns and coming up with added personal touches not offered by bigger firms. Fiona Wyatt, who runs online men’s footwear firm A Wyatt Shoe Shop, has been inspired by Small Business Saturday, an initiative first launched in America to increase the footfall on high streets on a certain day. Small Business Saturday is taking place on December 5 and Fiona says she hopes to see Keynsham High Street “buzzing” as local firms promote what they have to offer. Fiona, who hopes one day to

open a department store in Bath, said: “This is the beginning of the plan to ‘bring back the love to Keynsham High Street’. “The beauty about being in a small community is that people really want to help. I have received so much moral support from the businesses that have signed up on my venture to make this December the best December yet and joining SBS15.” Some of the companies involved will be offering incentives that go beyond the discounts offered by bigger firms

– Fiona is offering to handdeliver any pair of shoes ordered from her on the day in the BS and BA postcode areas and to polish another pair of shoes for the customer, for example. And the December 5 event is just one part of the Keynsham campaign, which is also challenging each business to raise its social media profile, attracting more “likes” on Facebook and followers on Twitter, with the winner earning a one-minute slot on Keynsham Town Community Radio to promote what they do. The

companies involved all attended a recent social media workshop at The Ship Inn run by Get Up To Speed, which is supported by local councils. Fiona added that shopping locally has many benefits for the local economy, adding: “When a customer shops in a small business, that shopper is helping to pay that business owner’s mortgage, put food on the table, pay for ballet or football lessons. If they shop in a large chain store, they are paying for the CEO to have another holiday abroad, they are paying the dividends to be paid to shareholders. That’s the fundamental difference.” The local firms supporting Fiona’s venture so far are: Smart Computers, Jazz PC, Bath Bakery, The Beehive Practice, Trigaci, Simply Carpets of Keynsham, Grimebusters, iTeam Solutions, Truly Bespoke, Fenton and Charles and The Ship Inn, which can all be found online.

Groups ready to fill church with forest of trees There is still chance for community groups to get into the festive spirit and join the third Keynsham Christmas Tree Festival. St John’s Church, in the High Street, will be filled with 60 individually decorated trees from December 4 to 6, and organisers say there are still one or two left for groups to sponsor. The trees are sponsored by schools, local charities, societies, sports clubs and more, with the decorations often reflecting the activities of each group. The festival will open to the public on the evening of Friday, December 4, from 6-9pm, and then throughout the weekend, from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday. During the festival there will be live music in the church, refreshments and the chance to take a guided tour of the historic building’s tower.

Admission is free but donations raised during the event will go to the church. The previous festival in 2013, which attracted more than 2,000 visitors, raised money for the dais, the raised area at the front of the church, which is now complete. Police warning after 14 reports of doorstep crime across force area Police are warning householders across the Avon and Somerset area to be on the alert after more than a dozen reports of doorstep crime. Elderly and vulnerable people living across the force area have been targeted by men who have either tried to persuade them to have work done to their property or claimed to be from the council or a utility company or that they were working on a neighbour’s property. In certain incidents, they have walked straight into the property when the door was opened. Around 14 incidents mainly involving two men were reported to police in October, including in Stockwood, Bishopsworth, Kingswood, Longwell Green, Warmley, Knowle, St George, Kingsweston, Lockleaze and Frome Vale. On some occasions cash was been stolen but in most cases the men left empty-handed. Most incidents occurred between 10am

Police advise residents to use their door chain if they have unexpected callers and noon. Following the reports, police have carried out house-tohouse inquiries and helped the residents affected improve their home security. DCI Gary Haskins said: “Thankfully people are becoming more aware of how to protect

themselves from this type of crime. I would urge you to be on your guard if you have an unexpected caller. Use your door chain. Genuine council or utility staff will offer identification and will be happy for you to check it before you let them in.

“If you’re in any doubt about a visitor, ring us straight away on 101. If you feel threatened, call 999. The key thing to remember is if you’re not sure, don’t open the door.” DCI Haskins said it wasn’t clear whether the same two men were involved in the reported incidents. He said: “These criminals appear to be heartlessly targeting vulnerable people. “I’d urge you to keep an eye on your frail elderly neighbours and call us straight away if you’re concerned about suspicious visitors. “Please will anyone with any information which can help us track these men down get in touch, either through our website or by calling 101.” l Keynsham’s policing team is also investigating recent reports of rogue traders operating in Saltford – see PC Kerry Grace’s column on Page 25 for more details.

Volunteers take a dip to find out which creatures call river home Wearing wellies and waterproofs, a record number of people waded into the River Chew to help the Keynsham branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust carry out a health check. Dave Sage, chairman of the group, shares the volunteers’ findings.

Stream dipping took place again in the River Chew at Dapp’s Hill on October 11. A record turnout of 43 people took part, a nice mixture of older and younger people, some from Wellsway School’s Green Team, some Avon Wildlife Trust members and some locals who had heard about the event in local publications. Seventeen kick samples were

taken, the most since 2008. The river level was low and the flow rate slow, reflecting quite low rainfall in September (though wetter than last year). A total of 15 major invertebrate indicator groups were represented, one up on 2014. Much discussion ensued about whether a yellow and black-striped fly larva was that of a horsefly, a cranefly or a

soldierfly. I can categorically state that I am not sure! Each sample had relatively low numbers (with the exception of bloodworms) and low biodiversity, possibly reflecting the low flow rate. Decreases None, apart from a small decrease in burrowing mayfly nymphs and leeches.

Increases Stonefly nymphs, swimming mayfly nymphs, cased caddis larva, snails. Overall, the main indicator groups and species were all present and sufficient to suggest that the quality of water remains good. Certainly there is still no obvious sign of poor water quality, such as increased sediment, sludge, or a bad smell. Local fishermen showed us numerous chubb and minnows, a few of which they caught – and returned. I also saw a kingfisher here three weeks ago, a sighting backed up by a passer-by. However, a marked increase in the numbers of bloodworms in some samples might suggest some reduction in water quality. Hence, as in 2014 the evidence is slightly conflicting this year. As last year, it is quite possible that the slow flow rate could decrease the oxygenation of the water and account for some of the observed changes in the invertebrate distribution here.

Birdgirl Mya-Rose in running for awards

A young wildlife enthusiast’s blog on birdwatching has been nominated for a prestigious award. Mya-Rose Craig, who is based in Compton Martin and was a guest at the Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group’s annual themed evening last year, is one of seven bloggers hoping to win Blog of the Year in the Birders’ Choice Awards run by Birdwatch magazine. She has also been nominated in the Local Hero of the Year category for setting up the UK’s only birding weekend for teenagers. Now Mya-Rose, also known as Birdgirl, is hoping people will log onto www.birdwatch.co.uk to vote for her. She is in good company among award nominees, who also include Chris Packham, Sir David Attenborough and Brian May in the Conservation Hero of the Year category. Mya-Rose is 13 years old and recently spotted her 4,000th species of bird, the youngest person to reach the milestone. Mya-Rose’s blog can be found at http://birdgirluk.blogspot. co.uk.

Rugby play leads the pack as first professional drama for The Space The staging of rugby-themed play Hands Up for Jonny Wilkinson’s Right Boot in Keynsham has been hailed a great success by organisers. An audience of more than 60 watched the first professional touring theatre company at The Space on Thursday, October 15, the cast of which included actress Hannah Douglas, who recently appeared in the new Far From The Madding Crowd film. The play, a one-act piece of 75 minutes, featured the cast of four on stage the whole time in an energetic performance against a minimal set. The play, commissioned by the Arts Council to tie in with the Rugby World Cup, asked the audience to put their hands up for the greatest moment in world rugby history. It told the story of Frederick Stanley Jackson, a Cornish rugby player from the early 20th century, who, even then, was embroiled in the controversy of the professional/

The play Hands Up For Jonny Wilkinson’s Right Boot proved a success, far left; Wildwood Kin will be performing live at The Space this month amateur debate, and who remained in New Zealand after his major role in the first ever British Lions tour. Here he was formative in coaching Maori players for the All Blacks but courted further controversy when he married a Maori girl. Having lost his leg with the Anzacs at Gallipoli in the First World War, Frederick devoted the rest of his life to developing Maori rugby. Organiser Ric Davison said the play was enormously

humorous and tragic at the same time – thanks especially to the talented cast and director Shane Morgan, who wrote to Ric the following day. He said: “The Keynsham audience were wonderful and a pleasure to perform to. As you know, getting an audience to any venue is always unknown territory and can never be guaranteed, but rest assured, size and engagement last night was better than most, in far more established venues. It was a real pleasure.”

“We are proud to have successfully brought drama of this quality to Keynsham,” said Ric, “and hopefully Jonny Wilkinson will prove to be the first of many.” In the coming weeks, The Space, above Keynsham Library, will play host to Keynsham Film Works screenings on November 5 and December 3, live music from folk/country/indie trio Wildwood Kin on November 7 and activities during the Winter Festival on November 27.

Hello to you all. The past month since I last wrote has been manically busy for the Keynsham Neighbourhood Policing team. We have been liaising with our partner agencies in tackling the two main problem areas that I highlighted on our patch in last month’s issue and we are beginning to see results. Watch this space! This time of year policingwise is always a busy period for us right up until after Christmas. With Halloween and Bonfire Night bringing problems of anti-social behaviour, we then have the muchanticipated Keynsham Winter Festival on November 27 (formerly the Victorian Evening) when shops are open later and traditional stalls and attractions are set up. This brings a lot of extra people into the town adding to the night-time economy, which always needs to be policed. My team and I are, as ever, looking forward to getting out and mingling with you all on that evening in the hope of enjoying some early Christmas

cheer. I always look forward to seeing the illuminated Christmas attractions from this time of year and the magnificent Christmas tree, which is on display every year at the front of St John’s Church. Some three weeks ago, we took part in the forcewide Rogue Traders’ Week where the team undertook several opportunities to engage with members of the public, informing them of what to do and what to look out for if they feel they are being conned by a so-called rogue trader. This involved coffee mornings, leaflet drops and setting up an ANPR operation to stop vehicles on some of our throughroads.

with PC Kerry Grace The week was a great success. Unfortunately, we cannot be in more than one place at a time and several addresses have been targeted by such people over the past month. Saltford in particular has seen several groups of rogue traders prey on elderly people, claiming to be able to carry out maintenance work for them that either does not need doing or is shoddily completed. They then charge the occupant extortionate amounts of money for the sub-standard work. There are many telltale warning signs to look out for if someone approaches you and offers to complete maintenance work if they simply knock on your door. Firstly, does the

person have identification as to who they are, what company they work for and logos and phone numbers displayed on their van? Secondly, are they able to give you invoice paperwork for the work they have completed? Thirdly, are they wearing a yellow tabard which has no logos on in an attempt to make them look legitimate? Fourthly, are they offering to complete work for you that, up until now, you have not needed? If alarm bells begin to ring then please call 999 because such calls are an offence, usually fraud. Have a safe Bonfire Night. Goodbye until next month. Kerry

Colleagues all cross the finish line as they team up to support charity Five colleagues from a Keynsham company spurred each other on to complete the Bristol Half Marathon, raising nearly £700 in the process. Team CASA – made up of Jon House, George Vickery, Joe Long, Ben House and Aidy Muttram – from CASA Environmental Services all the crossed the finish line on September 13 after joining forces to raise money for a good cause that has every member of the firm’s support. The group has now handed £692.51 to Mesothelioma UK and a company spokesperson explained: “We chose to fundraise for Mesothelioma UK as they provide valuable support and resources to mesothelioma sufferers and their families when diagnosed with the disease. “Mesothelioma is a disease which comes from exposure to asbestos and as a surveying company we provide a service to let people know where asbestos

Jon House, George Vickery, Joe Long, Ben House and Aidy Muttram is in their properties and provide recommendations on how to deal with the asbestos.”

Jill Lemon, Mesothelioma UK fundraising and marketing manager, thanked the team

and said the money would go a long way in helping to improve the services the charity provides. “Working for CASA Environmental Services, these guys know only too well the effect that asbestos can have on one’s health and so many in the United Kingdom are suffering with mesothelioma. We need funds for more treatments, trials and research. “With this in mind, the guys became ‘Team CASA’ outside of their work environment to support those families who are living every day with mesothelioma. “Taking on a half marathon is a massive challenge even for those that run and train regularly, but Team CASA took it in their stride and they did it with aplomb and self-belief and it just shows that getting together with the same goal in mind anything can be achieved, and didn’t they just do that!”

Help keep group ‘alive and sticking’

A group of morris dancers fear this season could be their last unless they attract new members. Priston Jubilee Morris has been performing since 1977 when the group was founded in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. But after 38 years, as a result of falling membership, the group says its dance at the annual Priston May Day on Monday, May 2, could be its last unless more people join to keep it “alive and sticking” for years to come. The group, which held an open evening in October to attract new members, is open to everyone, from complete novices to experienced dancers and also welcomes musicians looking to expand their repertoire into traditional folk. To find out more about Priston Jubilee Morris and getting involved, visit the group’s website www.pristonmorris. org.uk, email pristonmorris@ hotmail.com or contact Sam Ross on 07849 055 339.

Collectors spot a gem in new antiques fair Nearly 200 people browsed antiques and collectibles from coins and silver to ceramics and vintage record players at Saltford Hall last month. The event, on October 25 was Saltford-based antiques dealer Mark Thomas’s first antiques

and collectors’ fair in his home village. He said: “The main aim was to get a fair in Saltford off and running. Almost 200 people attended this first show and a number of dealers made inquiries about attending future fairs.

“In addition, those attending, both traders and public, were well catered for by the Saltford Hall cafe with its range of rolls, cakes, teas and coffee.” Mark is now arranging a second fair for Sunday, January 31.

Wartime memoir to support local charity

Jacob Rees-Mogg MP The constitutional clash between the Lords and the Commons over tax credits has been the main political issue recently. It has arisen over a controversial policy that is part of a major restructuring of welfare. The Government’s aim is to move from the dependency culture where millions of people either in low paid work or unemployed rely on the State for their income to one of low taxation and higher wages where people can make their own success in life. This has been obstructed in part by the unelected second chamber of Parliament in a break with conventions that date back to the 17th century. This may seem rather

abstruse and not of interest to most voters, some commentators suggest that what matters is the pound in peoples pocket not constitutional niceties. This is wrong. Constitutional principles and conventions matter because they are fundamental to the way the country is run and preserve the rights of voters. Taxation and spending are the preserve of the House of Commons because it is elected and to put a charge on the people requires their consent. It includes both taxation and spending because money cannot be spent until it has been raised so any government expenditure eventually leads to tax, so the two cannot be separated.

The House of Lords has stopped the elected government saving £4.5 billion. This will need to come from somewhere else. The Peers who took the decision represent primarily those parties that lost the last election against the one that has a mandate. No parts of any state are remote from the voters, in the United Kingdom judges are quite rightly separate and the European Union’s rules more regrettably so. If the power of the elected representatives of the people can safely be trampled on then democracy itself is challenged and to stop this the Lords must revert to the conventions or the law will need to be changed to ensure that they do.

A festival to suit all tastes Hundreds worked up an appetite browsing the stalls at the fourth Keynsham Food Festival last month. From restaurants and artisan food producers to supermarkets, visitors were treated to a feast of local food to try and buy. There was also the chance to expand their food knowledge with talks and demonstrations by the experts on subjects as diverse as Indian cookery, beekeeping, apple pressing and the perfect sausage. Marie Davies from 11Twelve Marketing and Event Management, which organised the festival, said: “The event was a great success. We believe footfall was up year on year with a good mixture of families and all ages from across Keynsham. We’ve had brilliant feedback from exhibitors and visitors that it was the best year they’ve had and as 11Twelve’s first event it was a great success.”

A song written by two Keynsham brothers as their mother recovered from breast cancer is now being used to raise money to help other women in their battle. Lawrence and Adam Purnell, who along with Ben Sweeney form the band Foreign Affairs, released You Said To Me on October 5 to coincide with Breast Cancer Care’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds from sales of the single, which is available on iTunes, will go to the charity, which gave their mum, Valerie, vital support as she fought the disease. The song has been played on radio stations across the country, including BBC London with Gaby Roslin and BBC Oxford with Will Gompertz, as the band dropped into the studios to tell the story behind the song. It has also been featured on BBC Introducing in the West, which showcases unsigned acts. Lawrence said the song’s message is one of hope and Valerie, who was the first person

to hear the track, chose the charity that would benefit. He said: “Breast Cancer Care helped Mum a lot – it doesn’t work on the medical side of things but offers support to women going through breast cancer, which is so incredibly important. We discussed it with the charity and the single is part of its national campaign. “I first played the song to Mum as she was recovering, as with all our songs she is usually the first person who hears a track. As you would expect, it was emotional, she loved it and has been so supportive. It’s a wonderful thing to share together. “We have been playing the song live over the last year. It has been played all over the world and at some of the biggest festivals and the reaction is always one that far exceeds what we could have ever imagined when writing it. “It is testament that whether or not you have been directly affected [by cancer] yourself, it is

Somerdale: Unwrapped and on show A series of photos charting the life of Keynsham’s former chocolate factory as its once busy blocks sat vacant are now on show at Somerdale. Photographer David Calvin was granted access to the empty buildings over more than two years as development plans for the site were being drawn up. The result was two series of stunning photos – Sunset on Somerdale and Somerdale: Unwrapped – a selection of which are now adorning the walls

of the new Somerdale Pavilion. David attended the sports and leisure complex’s launch day on November 1 with two books and a series of postcards created from his Somerdale images, which can be ordered from his website. The Bristol area’s industrial heritage has inspired much of David’s photography and he will be among artists exhibiting in Totterdown’s Front Room Arts Trail from November 20-22. Families invited to light candle to remember Families are invited to remember children who have passed away at an annual service. The Candles of Remembrance service will take place at Victoria Methodist Church in the High Street on Saturday, November 7, starting at 3pm. The service gives families the chance to remember young people who have passed away and to have their names read out in the roll call during the service. The service features poems, music, prayers and songs and parents are encouraged to re-

quest prayers or music that they have found helpful and would like to share with others. There is also the opportunity to light a candle, write a message or say a quiet prayer. At the end of the service refreshments are served in the hall. All are welcome – children, parents, grandparents, family and friends – and for more information, and to include your child’s name on the roll call, contact Jeff Sawyer on 0117 9754071 or the Rev Phillip Simpkins on 0117 986 2242.

A creative solution for empty shop unit

Local artists have come up with a creative solution for an empty shop unit at 4 Market Walk. Plans are under way to set up a creative pop-up shop that will open its doors in time for Christmas shopping in the vacant premises opposite the library. Keynsham Town Council has agreed to provide a grant of £1,000 towards the project, which is being led by town councillors Zoe Wilkins and Judith

Cron. Extra funding may also come from the Roundabout Arts Trail. Artists will have their work on show, all of which will be for sale, and it is hoped the pop-up will open its doors from November 25 until December 23. Cllr Wilkins said: “We hope it will be a great success and an opportunity to bring together some very talented artists from Keynsham and Saltford.”

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham

Zero Heroes I have been reading about the Danish town of Sønderborg, which aims to become zero carbon by 2029. ProjectZero, launched in 2007, is a joint venture between the people, politicians and businesses of the municipality of Sønderborg, an area that includes several towns and many villages, with a population of 77,000. It’s one of a hundred towns and cities around the world featured in a recent report called “Who’s getting ready for Zero?” by the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Scientists, business leaders and many governments accept the need to keep the rise in global temperatures below 2ºC to deliver a stable climate and a prosperous future for generations to come. Even the World Bank is calling on

nations to develop their own plans to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of this century. Some people argue that reaching zero carbon can’t be done, or it’s only possible if we return to the Middle Ages with its horse-drawn carts and candles. Towns like Sønderborg reveal that nothing is further from the truth. We can easily reach zero carbon emissions using existing technologies, without compromising our lifestyles. In fact, there are many benefits to becoming zero carbon, including a more stable economic system, better health and well-being, stronger communities and improved relationships with nature. Globally, our energy systems need to be decarbonised. Regional renewable energy distribution networks must be developed; national

governments should support and prioritise energy efficiency and the renewable energy sectors, and communities must be allowed to create and own local renewable energy supplies. I was heartened to read about the positive steps governments, businesses and communities are taking around the world to decarbonise their energy supplies. The UK government, however, is bucking the trend – seemingly determined to kill off our renewables industry, promising to go “all out” for greenhouse gas-intensive fracking and shutting down grants for energy efficiency. Can our region become zero carbon? I challenge B&NES Council to work with local communities and businesses to develop our own ProjectZero plan, and create a better world for ourselves and future generations.

Sara rallies her Calendar Girls to join a fundraising photoshoot A Keynsham shop manager has ticked off another goal on the list of fundraising activities she is carrying out over the next five years – a Calendar Girls-style calendar. After nearly a year’s hard work, planning photoshoots and rounding up willing models among family and friends, Sara Randall has revealed the results. The calendar is called The Cutting Edge, featuring images with titles such as Cutting The Cake for a wedding-themed photo and Cut Throat Razor, a Sweeney Todd-inspired scene, and is now on sale to raise funds for hospice charity Dorothy House. The theme was inspired by Sara’s 30-year hairdressing career, which also played a part in her first fundraising challenge for the charity last year when she had her head shaved, making £3,000. Sara, who is deputy manager at Keynsham’s Dorothy House shop as well as working as a hairdresser in Paulton, said: “It was a real rush to get the calendar finished but I’m pleased with it – this was so much harder than shaving my hair off! “I talked my friends into it – some of them were up for it, some of them were a bit scared and some did it because it they felt sorry for me!” Organising the calendar began in January when Sara started rounding up volunteers and looking for photoshoot locations, which included Keynsham Wine Bar and Wild About Flowers, while photographer Lucy May

Sara Randall, back left and below, with some of her fellow ‘Calendar Girls’ – Sam Dare, Tracey-GriffithsTrump, Emma Wood, Vicky Mitchard, Jodie Griffiths, Lauren Hooper and Beccie Thomas stepped in to create the images. The calendar was launched at an event for family and friends on October 10 at Keynsham Royal British Legion Club and is now available to buy in Keynsham from Polkadot and Cocoa Hair Design for £5. People can also email frandall@ btinternet.com to purchase copies. Sara, who chose to support Dorothy House after the charity cared for her brother-in-law Patrick Doyle in 2011, is now planning her next fundraising activities, which include the Three Peaks Challenge next year and a celebration ball to coincide with her 50th birthday in 2019.

Dogs have their day at pet show

by Ros Anstey This year’s annual dog show, the fifth to be held in Compton Dando, was another huge success, with a total of £2,200 raised, which will be split between Compton Dando Community Association (CDCA) and Mutts with Friends, the dog rehoming and rescue charity. Ten classes saw the mutts strut their stuff, with categories including best puppy, most handsome dog, waggiest tail, best rescue, gun dog and, of course, best in show. Badger, a six-month-old Border collie from Keynsham, won Best Puppy class and went on to win Best in Show. Badger had never entered any competition before and must now always remember he was spotted at the Compton Dando Dog Show first. Among other winners were black greyhound Jimmy, who won the Best Rescue dog, and bull dog cross Wilson, who

was third in the Best Puppy class. A range of trade stands adorned the field in Compton Dando, selling food, dog toys, crafts and jewellery, while a number of different charities had information stands. The raffle included a cash prize, case of wine and a number of other fantastic prizes. This event was probably the biggest to date, bringing together Compton Dando residents, lots of people who have rescued dogs from Mutts and a number of others from further afield. Ms Maggs, said: “It was great to see entry numbers swell, with up to 30 in a class and with some 200 plus people attending on the day. “Thanks to everyone for their hard work and support in making this such a success,” she added. Sponsoring the event were Skinners dog food and Welcome Home cleaning.

Market has all the ingredients for a festive feast... and more I love Christmas – the TV is rubbish, travel will be a guaranteed nightmare, it never snows on Christmas day but no matter because, for me, Christmas is all about the food. Not necessarily the consumption (although that is in itself very enjoyable) but the traditions, memories and the gathering of people that food leads to. For many of us, when we think of Christmas food we conjure up steaming piles of veg, roast potatoes (the correct way of preparing fiercely contested), pigs in blankets, the turkey, puddings, biscuits, cake, satsumas, chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. But food is also a cause of many of the memories which I have about Christmas; stirring up Christmas cakes and puddings with Mum and Nan, burning my tongue on mince pies just out of the oven but not caring because I made them myself, having Christmas dinner at my brother’s Belgian in-laws’ house featuring eight

different courses and a new alcohol to match each. There are also the disasters – the year the oven door fell off and Dad had to construct an ingenious prop system, another year when Mum knocked a heavy metal salt grinder onto the glass hob cracking it beyond use so we had to cook all the veg on a gas camping stove. But it is also the people you share this food with; the family, friends and random guests who turn up at

the last minute – the collective demolishing of food, the group nap in front of the queen’s speech and the obligatory afternoon walk to “make some room” for cold turkey sandwiches and Christmas cake. So if you’re having people over this December and want to feed yourself and your guests some fantastic local produce, or you have drawn a blank with what to get Auntie Sue for a present, as you’re pretty sure

Market? There is a great selection available for making up a food “hamper” as a gift and if you are looking for local ingredients, many producers will be taking advance orders at the market on November 14 which can be picked up on December 12 or frozen ready for the big day. The December market will be welcoming Keynsham Brass Band, who will be playing carols and Christmas songs, and, of course, Santa and his sleigh! Keynsham artist Penny Richards at Chew Valley Arts Trail

Artists open the studio doors for 13th trail by Ros Anstey Keynsham had no arts trail of its own this year, but local artists were among the many who opened their doors to visitors for Chew Valley Arts Trail last month. Keynsham artist Penny Richards, who is the former chairperson of Keynsham’s Roundabout Arts Trail, exhibited her textured paintings and collages during the event. This year's trail – the thirteenth – was hailed a great success with hundreds of people travelling around the area to

view the varied art work on show. Organiser Sandy Bell said: “Thank you so much to huge number of people who visited the Chew Valley Arts Trail. The whole area was buzzing and we had good weather and good fun. “There was a huge variety of quality work on show at 24 different studios, halls and homes prepared by our artists, who opened their doors to offer a warm welcome and a chance to view their paintings in all styles, illustrations, photography, Manga, mixed media, pottery, glassware, sculpture and fine jewellery.”

A crafty way to shop for Christmas gifts A crafts group in Compton Dando will be giving visitors the chance to buy some handmade gifts for Christmas this year. The group will be opening the doors of their regular crafts session at Compton Dando Hall, where they meet to try a range of crafting activities, inviting visitors to come in and

watch them at work and buy items. The sale day will take place on November 14, from 10am-4pm, and will cost £2 for admission or £5 for anyone who would like to join the craft activities and have lunch. All profits to the Compton Dando Community Association to support local activities. RA

Community bids a fond farewell to popular rector after five years by Ros Anstey It was with sad hearts that parishioners from the Benefice of Compton Dando, Publow with Pensford, and Chelwood came together for a farewell dinner at Compton Dando to say goodbye to popular rector, Rev Canon John Simpson and his wife Carole, who were moving off to pastures new. Also there were Rev Simpson's daughter Nicola Smith and Carole’s son, Martin Sussams, who will be staying on and will be the regular organist for the benefice, as well as helping with various musical events at Keynsham and Chewton Keynsham. Churchwarden Andrew Hillman said: “After more than five years of wonderful service in the benefice. John has retired and will be moving with his wife Carole to Hereford.” Rev Simpson said: “I retired officially when I reached the age of 70 as rector and rural dean

Rev Canon John Simpson and his wife Carole of Lowestoft in Suffolk – clergy have to retire by then – and we are no longer paid. “I did not feel ready to give up completely and so accepted what is known as a House for Duty position as priest in charge of Publow with Pensford, Compton Dando and Chelwood. That means we are given a rectory to live in and expenses are paid. “I have enjoyed this work for the past five and a half years, but now feel that the time has come to pack up completely,” he said.

Asked what plans he and Carole had for the future, he said: “We are moving to Hereford, where we know nobody except the agent who sold us our new house. Hopefully we shall make new friends and I will have a few jobs to do, but no overall responsibility.” Asked how he felt on finally retiring, he said: “I do not expect it to be easy having been a clergyman for 52 years. “Carole and I leave with a bit of a heavy heart for we have grown to love Somerset and

the Chew Valley. The people here have been so supportive, welcoming and generous that it has been a real pleasure to have served as their rector. “The churches are in good heart and I hope that my successor will soon be found,” he said. Presenting Rev Simpson with a cheque on behalf of the benefice, and flowers to Carole, Mike Stevens said: “Five years ago a wise man came to us from the East. I was a little suspicious getting only one wise man and not three, but we weren't shortchanged. “John offered us calm leadership and a no-fuss style. He encouraged us to think about changing, he brought us calm, as we were a fragile benefice when he came, and he challenged us to think about our faith etc, which he did with humility and lightness. “We will all miss John and Carole,” he said.

On the Plot Looking back, this year has in the main been a good year on the plot. There have been a few disappointments due to the ground conditions or weather being wrong at the time of sowing and my fruit crops are below par due, I think, to a late cold period back in spring. The onion sets and garlic planted earlier have all set root and some green shoots are starting to appear. The broad beans have just been sown so that they don’t take on too much growth before winter sets in. It’s still not too late to make sowings of both broad beans and peas but they will need some protection

was one week into October. The roses still flowered, the tail end of the astilbe had a couple of purple spikes, the begonias were bright red and the hypericum a very buttery yellow. But what caught my eye was a golden heuchera at the front of the border, framed by the purple and red asters. It presented an almost perfect picture, and the combination was purely accidental. It seems to tell me that while we strive for tidiness and regularity, sometimes accidents can give a thoughtprovoking message. I have been working on the lawn, literally, scarifying and clearing the moss, trimming the grass a little longer, and spreading the feed, weed and moss killer treatment. Providentially, the rain came a day later and watered it in. The lawn now looks green and a little thicker. Maybe one more cut and then clean and service the mower.

We had a lovely bright spell in the second week of the month, quite good temperatures. It encouraged me to get on with the small jobs of removing the pots, and possibly their contents, to their sheltered winter home. Those pots still containing plants, particularly a fine red begonia, will be raised off the ground to stop waterlogging and possibly freezing. We have discarded several contents of pots as they are several years old and will invest in new next spring. The apples are picked and either stored or passed on to worthy causes. We are not storing so many this year, and have been quite careful in our selection, assuming the healthier they are the longer they will keep. Time will tell. Leaves are falling quite readily now. The silver birch was way ahead and now has no leaves, apples, pears and plum leaves follow suit, and the leaf carpet

gets thicker. The leaf pit is filling rapidly and needs stamping down and watering, to make good mould for next year. Last year’s is dug out and on the beds ready for the spring. That should give the new plants a good start. What do we say about November? There is not too much going on, although the roses are still flowering well. Winter flowering jasmine should be showing their tiny yellow stars, and frosts will soon see off the dahlias. If the temperature drops, it is a good time to plant tulips, and can go on until the end of the year. Plant them twice their own height and group them. Dig up the dahlias, clean them thoroughly and store in a frost-proof place. Anything above ground, be sure to check supports to prevent rocking. With small trees and shrubs, look for damaged or diseased branches and remove. Enough to keep us all busy!

under a fleece tunnel or similar and hopefully you will have a good row for next spring. Now that summer time has officially finished, the amount of work on the plot will reduce but even in winter there are odd jobs to do. Weather and shortening days are big factors in enabling any activity outside. As you continue to clear your area continue try to dig as much as you can but keep a record of where you grew your vegetables this year so that you avoid repeat planting next season as this can prolong problems with soil-bound disease and nutrition deficiency. Always avoid growing the same crop on the same area as far as space

allows but there are exceptions to this rule e.g. runner beans. If you are storing vegetables, regularly check them and remove any with signs of rotting or you may well spoil them all. Now is a good time to prepare areas for next spring. Try digging a bean trench or preparing beds for asparagus or soft fruits. It’s important to dig these areas thoroughly and remove all the perennial weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure or compost as you go and, in the case of a bean trench, you can add the stems of cabbages or sprouts but chop them up with a spade first as this will help them rot over the winter.

November is a good time to plant fruit trees or bushes, for example gooseberries, black currants, raspberries and blackberries. Be careful that you select the right variety and quantity for the space available, as they will spread over time, and consider growing thornless varieties. If you have an asparagus bed, prune the top growth right to the ground when it turns yellow and dispose of the foliage to avoid infestations of beetle over-wintering. Finally, try to save some seeds for next year from your bean plants. Remove the pods that have swelled and turned yellow then take out and dry the seeds thoroughly.

We’ve got so many hidden gems on our shelves so come and take a rummage, you never know what you’ll find.” Funds raised through the shops goes towards running the hospice, which cares for more than 2,670 people a year as well as supporting their families. Victoria added: “Updating your style for winter of course means making room in your wardrobe and we greatly appreciate any donations we get. Without your wonderful help we would not be able to fill our shops with lovely items and we would not be able to continue supporting those in Bristol who need us. “Also a huge thank you to our lovely local supporters-cummodels who can be seen in the shop fronts and who are making this campaign look extra stylish!” To find out more about St Peter’s Hospice, visit www. stpetershospice.org.uk.

with the team at Chandag Road Pharmacy Sleep Problems

Here at Chandag Road Pharmacy we are often asked for help and advice on customers’ sleep problems. This month we take a look at the factors which influence how well we sleep and some tips on how to achieve the best night’s rest possible. Most adults need between six and nine hours sleep each night. By working out what time you need to wake up, you can judge when you should aim to get to sleep. Most people find keeping regular sleep hours makes the brain familiar with sleep time and awake time so try to go to bed and rise at the same time each day – even at weekends. Having a bedtime ritual also helps as this allows you to unwind and relax before settling down for the night. This can include things such as having a warm (not hot!)

bath before bed, reading a book or listening to some relaxing music. Avoid afternoon naps of longer than 30 minutes as these can affect your night-time sleep patterns, as can drinking caffeine in tea and coffee in the evening. TVs, mobile phones and laptop computers should be banned from the bedroom as the body associates these with work not rest and the light that these machines emit can affect sleep patterns. Try to switch off from all electronic devices for at least an hour before you aim to be asleep. The bedroom should be a relaxing place that is comfortable and quiet and not too hot or cold – a temperature between 18 and 24 degrees is ideal. Ensure that you block out as much outside light as you can by using blinds or curtains

and if there is excessive noise, earplugs might prove a useful investment. If you are struggling to fall asleep because of worries or stress, many people find writing

things down, for example as a to-do list for the following day, can help. If you still can’t sleep, don’t lie there worrying about it as this will make the problem worse! Instead, get up and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy again. Many people falsely believe having an alcoholic drink will help them sleep. While it is true that alcohol will help you drift off to sleep, it will disrupt your sleep later in the night and can even cause early waking. It merely shifts the problem from the night to the morning. Many products are available to buy over the counter to help sleep problems and while some people find these useful they are only meant as a short-term option. Your pharmacist will be able to advise you on the suitability and use of such products.

Mary Face and Janet Jones cut the cake at the Friends in Need 40th celebration

Volunteers mark 40 years of helping others Volunteers past and present have met to celebrate 40 years of Friends in Need’s service to the community. The team provide transport to and from hospital for those unable to use public transport and would otherwise be unable to get to their appointments. The evening, attended by 45 volunteers, was chaired by Margaret Wilson, chairman of Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford, which coordinates the service. Reverend Christopher Penn, a co-ordinator with

Friends in Need, led prayers and thanksgiving while Mary Face, the chief co-ordinator, gave a history of how Friends in Need came about 40 years ago. Drivers shared experiences they had had over the years while transporting patients and the evening continued with a buffet supper and cutting of the celebration cake. Thought for the Month with Rev Ian Rousell, curate, Keynsham Parish I’m guessing we all know people who, because they are too proud or they feel they are wasting people’s time, don’t ask when they need something. It is fair to say I can at times be pretty slow on the uptake, a gentle hint is rarely enough. I often say: “If you need anything, then ask me and I’ll do what I can to help, or explain why I can’t.” It can often be very frustrating and upsetting and can lead to a sense of guilt to discover afterwards, when it’s too late, that I could have helped someone if only I’d known. Of course, we ourselves, particularly as we grow older, can also find it difficult to admit a need for something or to ask for help. In one of his stories, Jesus speaks of a man knocking at a neighbour’s

door at midnight. The family were all asleep in bed, and having woken his neighbour he asked for some bread so he could feed a friend who had just arrived after a long journey. Unthinkable today maybe, but clearly quite normal in his day, and Jesus uses this picture, emphasising the immediate acceptance of the neighbour who willingly helps out in this most inconvenient appeal, to illustrate how God is always happy to hear our requests. So Jesus continues: “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened.” But the trouble is that so often we’re just too proud to do as he suggests and bring our needs and concerns to God in prayer.

The Story of the Floating Harbour

The first evening talk of the society’s new season saw a record audience of over 120, including many non-members, fill the hall at St Dunstan’s Church to hear Peter Malpass describe the history of Bristol’s Floating Harbour. He covered all aspects of his subject: the politics, economics and construction of what was a huge engineering project, and he had a wealth of slides from contemporary paintings and drawings to illustrate the story. While the purpose of the scheme, to allow ships that were unloading and loading to remain floating at all states of the tide, is perhaps obvious from the name, many of the details are less so. For example, the entrances to the harbour at Bathurst Basin and Temple Meads were closed off many years ago and it is not obvious why they were built. But Peter described how, in days of sail, ships had to be hauled through the length of the harbour to reach the quays, so the higher

entrances allowed smaller vessels to use the incoming tide up the New Cut to get closer to the quays before resorting to this slow and expensive technique. Descriptions like this and many other anecdotes made this an enjoyable evening for everyone present.

This month’s Monday evening talk is on the subject of William Beckford. Locally, we associate his name with the tower on Lansdown but Beckford was a novelist, a patron of the arts and a politician, also reputed at one time to be the richest commoner in England. A rare opportunity to purchase this attractive gable-fronted detached bungalow situated in a sought-after cul-de-sac of similar properties on the Wellsway side of Keynsham. This lovely three-bedroom bungalow, which is in need of some modernisation, benefits from a single garage, double glazing and pleasant mature front and rear gardens. A local estate agent put a house with a difference on the market in a bid to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. People keen to snap up this unique property – a gingerbread house handmade by a Saltford resident – took part in a raffle on Eveleighs Facebook page in October. The company raised £160 for

the charity and the raffle winner picked at random was Nicola Rodway from Saltford. Robin Eveleigh, owner of Eveleighs, said: “Cancer Research UK is a charity close to our hearts and we had many donations from £1 to £20, all appreciated. “This is a great result, we are all very happy.”

Impressive medal haul as club’s young swimmers are out in force Keynsham Swimming Club’s younger swimmers were out in force at the Somerset County Development Meet held at Millfield School earlier this month, writes our correspondent. The Development Meet is a popular early season event in the swimming calendar and provides an opportunity for swimmers to gain qualification times for the County Championships held in January and February and for some of the younger swimmers to gain their first taste of competitive swimming. There were many personal best and county qualifying times achieved alongside a very impressive haul of medals. Andrew Turner, Gold Squad head coach, was very impressed with the progress of some of the younger swimmers, some of whom achieved medal success in only their first or second competitive swims.

Keynsham also saw another of their dedicated volunteer officials progressing through the ranks with Chris Metcalfe passing his final assessment for the J2S qualification. For the uninitiated, Chris now gets to be the man who says “Take your marks” and start races at all levels of swimming competition. The Keynsham swimmers are now looking forward to their highly competitive club championships held over two weekends towards the end of November. The club championships will see Keynsham Leisure Centre packed to the rafters with every inch of the pool spectator area crammed with parents, grandparents and siblings keen to see their swimmer compete against their clubmates. Club secretary Dave Beament often swims in the “masters” race at the club championships himself and regards it as the

home highlight of the club's calendar. “It’s a great family atmosphere with standing room only and the noise is amazing,” he said. “The loudest cheers are always reserved for the Keynsham Seals invitational race which is hotly contested.” Keynsham’s next team outing will be Round 2 of the National Arena Swimming League in mid-November. Keynsham have proudly maintained a South West Premier Division placing in the national league for the past few years despite having to compete with much larger clubs in the area. Round 2 will see the team travel to Millfield once again where they will be joined by local star Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, who has managed to find time to represent her home club despite being in training for the Rio Olympics next year. Keynsham medal successes at the Somerset County

Keynsham Rugby celebrate super six as they extend unbeaten run by Rob Breckon Keynsham Rugby made it six wins from six league outings following a hard-fought but deserved away victory at Wellington on October 24. Despite welcoming back four regular first team players, Keynsham were again without a full roster due to absences from fly half Joe Davies, winger Marlon Dorsett, centre Jack Hawkins and second row Gareth Jones. However, the amber and blacks started the stronger, dominating early exchanges and forcing Wellington to concede errors in their own attack. With 18 minutes played, Keynsham’s powerful pack provided a perfect platform for the game’s first try. Captain and number 8 Jack Weston picked up the ball at the back of a scrum and began a bullocking run into the 22, handing off the opposi-

tion fly half and releasing the ball to supporting scrum half James Wetton. Quick hands from Wetton found open side flanker Brad Newton who crashed over. 0-5. Keynsham continued to dominate the first half with staunch defence and a host of direct running in attack. However, a string of needless penalties allowed Wellington to potentially claim their first points of the day except for the penalty kick to be skewed wide. The resulting 22 drop out was well received by the home side but as they looked to attack out wide, pacy winger John Pearce snatched an intercept and sprinted in from 65 metres to claim Keynsham’s second try. Fly half Sam Challenger added the conversion. 0-12 On the close of the first half Wellington clawed back three vital points with a well taken

penalty by Matt Parsons from 30 metres out to make the half time score 3-12. The second half started with a strong attacking spell from the home side. However, despite good phases of play, Wellington were unable to penetrate the physical and well-drilled Keynsham defence. It wasn’t until an hour had been played that the home side closed the gap once more with two well-taken three-pointers, the first a penalty followed by a nicely slotted drop goal to make the scores just a three-point game - 9-12. As the game entered the last 10 minutes, the Keynsham pack once again asserted their physicality and another attacking scrum on Wellington’s five metre line allowed the away side to heave their way over for an important and ultimately match-

deciding try, Weston dotting the ball down. Final score 9-17. A fumbled restart by Keynsham allowed Wellington a final chance to snatch a losing bonus point but again were out-muscled off the ball, which was hoofed into touch for another important away win. Captain Weston said: “Another away win is fantastic. We gave away far too many penalties but this result is testament to our defence as we only allowed Wellington into our 22 three times all game. “To have notched up six consecutive league wins and remain unbeaten as we enter November is credit to this squad’s belief and effort every time they put on the Keynsham shirt.” Earlier in the month, on October 10, the team took their fifth win with an away victory over Cheltenham, winning 13-19.

Prizes handed out as bowls club marks end of successful season Frys Bowls Club brought a successful season, finishing second in the Bristol and District League Division 3 and reaching the semi-finals of the Somerset Bowls Association Wedmore Plate, to a close with their annual presentation dinner where the winners and runners-up of the internal club competitions were presented with the trophies, writes our correspondent. The first trophy to be presented was from the Triples Day. A close day came down to the final ends with Andy Kendall, Mike Barling and Vincent Dornan winning ahead of runners-up Pete Buck, Clive Davies and Andre Le Huray. The pairs’ final saw Christopher Day and Geoff Kershaw playing Terry Vickery and Pat Slavin. Despite a late comeback from Terry and Pat, it was Christopher and Geoff taking home the title. The singles competitons saw a novice final between Alan Mills and Dave Derrick. Alan

Mills was able to pick up the title to take home his first. The two wood once again saw Jonathan Day reach the final, after a high quality semi-final, taking on Geoff Kershaw who continued his good run of reaching finals. It took a late comeback from Jonathan Day to

take the game into an extra end and it was Jonathan taking home the two wood title with the last bowl. The handicap once again saw Jonathan Day reaching the final to take on Stephen Day. A long final continued into the quickly fading light, but it was Jonathan

73

who took home his second title of the year. The championship final saw Geoff Kershaw play Brian Hill. Geoff Kershaw was on form and took home his first major singles title. Anyone interested in joining Frys Bowls Club can email stephen.jenkins@live.co.uk.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field Keynsham Town’s First XI continued their unbeaten home record this season in October, progressing in two cup competitions and maintaining their position in the top 10 of the Toolstation Western League Division One. Chard Town The month started with a 4-0 drubbing of Chard Town in the Somerset Premier Cup. The Ks produced some breathtaking football and their real cutting edge at the AJN Stadium continued as they controlled the game throughout. After Aaron Childs had scored the first goal with another one of his trademark runs, Sam Duggan scored his first ever hat-trick in senior football. It was the perfect hat-trick too, the first with his right foot, then one with his left before finishing it off with a close range header. Manager Chris King said: “Sam has been a great signing for us this season and it’s great to see him getting in on the goals as well.” The Ks are at home to Radstock Town in the second round in November. Wells City The next week the Ks had two titanic tussles with Wells City in the FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round. In the first game at home, Keynsham started on the front foot and took an early lead through Sam Duggan, but the visitors equalised five minutes before the break. After Wells took the lead early in the second half, the hosts deservedly equalised with 15 minutes remaining when sub Kieran Adams burst into the box and slotted home a great goal to make it 2-2. With keeper Ash Wintle in fine form, extra time was a tight affair, with both sides tiring. The game had one final moment of drama though and the Ks had a wonderful chance to go through to the First Round proper when a penalty was

November, 2015

awarded with five minutes of extra-time left. However the Wells stopper guessed correctly and saved Ben Harris’ spot kick to force a replay three days later. A wet Tuesday night then saw more thrills and spills at the Athletic Ground, Wells. Although Keynsham started poorly and conceded after 10 minutes, Aaron Childs soon equalised and the rest of the game was a fantastic end-to-end affair. Amazingly it was a case of déjà vu, as yet again the Ks missed a penalty in the second period of extra time which could have won the game, when Tom Harris had his spot-kick saved. Wells were then awarded a penalty of their own in the 122nd minute, which was converted to condemn the Ks to an unlucky defeat. Chris King said: “We travelled with a small squad due to injuries and work commitments, but the lads who played on the night were terrific. For me, we should have won the game and definitely didn’t deserve the twist of fate at the end of extra time. After already having a goal line decision go against us and then of course the penalty miss, the referee decided the match by awarding a dubious penalty to Wells City two minutes into injury time of the extra time period. “We couldn’t believe the decision and it was such a cruel way to lose what had been a fantastic cup tie between two teams giving it everything over 240 minutes of football. Unbelievably, this was our sixth penalty miss on the trot now and each time it has probably cost us a win. All the lads are saying ‘I’ll have the next one’, I just hope who ever does take it scores!” Chippenham Park Next up was the visit of Chippenham Park in the Western League’s Les Phillips Cup. The Ks were missing a few of their more senior players and fielded a very young side, but put in a very hard-working performance especially after the two extratime games against Wells City. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Tom Johnson gave them an early lead and although they wasted several good chances to make the game safe, the visitors rarely threatened. Keynsham now face a trip to Wincanton Town in the next round. Chris King said: “It was also nice to see Tom Johnson get his first senior goal after

impressing so far this season. We’ve been encouraging him to get into the box more and it certainly worked on Saturday as he met the cross perfectly before heading home. Tom has got a big future in football, but like the other young players he needs to keep working on his game to become that all-round midfield player.” Groundhop Weekend As the Ks returned to league action for the first time in three weeks, October 17 saw the rarity of a Saturday night game at the AJN Stadium as part of the Western League’s “Groundhop Weekend”. This involved seven league matches staggered over Friday, Saturday and Sunday and attracted an attendance of 1,738 between all seven games; this included fans from as far afield as Germany, Norway and Australia! Keynsham themselves had a bumper gate of 224, who witnessed a 2-2 draw with Westbury United. The Ks were sluggish in the first half, conceding after 10 minutes and not really looking like scoring. However, the introduction of sub Bertrand Abang at the start of the second half gave the hosts renewed energy and he equalised with a screamer from 25 yards with 20 minutes to go. After that Keynsham should have claimed all three points, as Tom Harris slipped his marker to put them 2-1 up with eight minutes left. However as the game went into injury time, Westbury induced panic in the Keynsham defence

and scored a last-gasp equaliser. Club Secretary Julian French said: “It was a great day for Keynsham Town FC and hopefully if we can continue to be successful on the pitch, crowds of 100+ will become the norm. “I must thank everyone at the club who made the evening such a success, including Trudi, Deb and Brian in the Tea Hut, my wife Terrie and Chris’s wife Lisa on the merchandise table, Ali and the troops behind the bar and Ric, Martin, Steve, Ade and Malcolm for duties too numerous to mention! You all put the club in a really good light and we have received loads of positive feedback from League officials and groundhoppers alike.” Calne Town It must have been slightly strange the following Saturday playing in front of a “normal” home crowd of 49, when Calne Town were the visitors. The Ks produced another good performance to run out 2-1 winners, with Tom Harris and Sam Duggan getting the goals. This moved Keynsham up to 9th place in the league as they entered a well-deserved fortnight off. There is still an opportunity for individuals or companies to pick their favourite Keynsham Town player and enjoy a season-long sponsorship for a one-off payment of £25. If you would like to hear about other sponsorship packages available, contact Julian French at jules1233@live.com or on 07814 609853.
