Battle to protect ambulance station From Page 1 concerns about ambulance crews meeting response times if they had further to travel. The change.org petition said: “It would be difficult for ambulances based in Bristol to make the required response times, especially for the category one patients, whose lives could be totally compromised.” Petitioners said they understood a revised model might take years to implement and called for the town to keep its station until that happened. South Western Ambulance Service said an extra £12 million aimed at reducing demand and improving response times would result in more than 240 extra frontline staff and allowed a review of the location of crews, vehicles and stations. A service spokesman said: “The demand on the ambulance service and the nature of the calls we receive has changed significantly over time and some of our stations are no longer located where we need them to be. Many of our stations are also in need of significant repair and refurbishment.” He said crews were rarely at a station as they were out treating patients or on standby elsewhere but they would always have a base station to book on to and off shifts and for breaks. He said: “There will be a small number of changes to stations linked to the

implementation of this plan, including changes to existing facilities that need updating because we have outgrown them, but there will not be significant numbers of station closures.” He also said having more staff was “a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to our staff and our patients’ lives”. Jo Fowles, South West Ambulance and Allied Health Unison branch chair, said: “We welcome the planned investment and extra resources being proposed by the trust as this is something we’ve been calling for for years. “But our members are concerned at plans to close ambulance stations and centralise operations into one or two hubs for the Bristol area. “After a number of occasions in the past where the trust has promised that similar changes will result in better working conditions, more support and less occasions where crews are working long over the end of their shifts haven’t happened, so staff are understandably cynical about these proposals.” Keynsham ambulance station staff said: “We feel like we are all part of a very special family who have served the local community for many years. We were very sad to be told of the plans to close our station and feel that it is in the best interest of the community for us to remain at Keynsham.”

Veteran Ken's salute to D-Day heroes NORMANDY veteran Ken Turner returned to France to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Mr Turner, of Keynsham, was among 300 veterans who sailed across the English Channel on a cruise ship commissioned by the Royal British Legion for events to remember the Allied invasion in June 1944. The operation started a long campaign to liberate north-west Europe from German occupation and eventually bring World War Two to an end the following year. Mr Turner, 94, was not part of the initial landings on the Normandy beaches but arrived with the 7th Royal Tank Regiment a number of days later to carry out daring reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines. They were high risk and the men frequently came under fire. For Mr Turner, who was a lance corporal, his war in France came to an end when a German bomber disguised as an Allied plane made a direct hit on his and his two comrades’ tank. One of the crew died instantly and the other is believed to have died later of his wounds. Mr Turner said: “The bomb blew my tank to smithereens – my two crew members were killed. How the hell I escaped with only injuries I will never know.” Shrapnel in his back was removed by medics before he was flown for care to a hospital in Cardiff, but a metal nut which lodged itself in his neck was only removed 20 years ago after an X-ray revealed its location. It is now displayed in a box in his home. Mr Turner said: “It is a reminder of the war and two men in my tank team who did not survive that blast.” The event also had a life changing outcome for Mr Turner, who had originally lied about his age when he joined the army at just 16. While he was in hospital, a group of women from a nearby munitions factory organised a party for the wounded soldiers. Mr Turner said: “That German pilot did

He was demobbed and married Betty, the

couple going on to have a son, Paul, and daughter, Carole. Mrs Turner died in 1999. Mr Turner said it was important to remember those who died in the war. He said: “It must be a lesson to ensure it never happens again.”

It's looking good for park facelift progress THE first phase of improvements at Kelston Road Park in Keynsham could be finished by the end of this year. Bath & North East Somerset Council and Keynsham Town Council are working with the community on a plan for the site to make it a safer and more pleasant place for people of all ages to enjoy. The scheme is also aimed at meeting future demands, taking into account issues such as climate change and the town’s growing population. A phase of consultation has already been completed, which included a community survey and workshop. The results showed park facilities were regarded as poor and that play facilities, while safe, were old and should be given top priority for improvement and replacement. A park improvement project drawn up as a result of the consultation also includes tree planting, more seating and new signs. It is planned to carry out the scheme in two phases, the first of which is expected to cost in the region of £40,000 and could be completed by the end of December, subject to feedback from local people. A scheme to improve Kelston Road Park includes tree planting, more seating and new signs will include improvements for wildlife, landscaping, tree planting, path repairs, better football facilities and measures to prevent unauthorised vehicles from getting into the park. Phase two will involve a complete overhaul of play facilities, with new play equipment to be provided for all ages and abilities. The cost is set to be about £110,000 and will require extra planning, design, consultation and fundraising, with the end of

July 2020 the target for completion. Pete Sessions, parks project manager at BANES, said that, at this stage, feedback was requested on the phase one proposals, with a separate exercise on phase two to come later. Details can be viewed online at www. bathnes.gov.uk/kelstonroadpark, where there is also a short survey to make comments, register support or raise any concerns. Responses must be received by Monday, July 8.

Hallelujah! Pray silence for the bark chorus A BRASS band is blowing its own trumpet after its first engagement of the year was declared a huge success. Crofts End Silver Band, which rehearses at United Reformed Church in Tabernacle Road, Hanham, performed at a Family Fun Dog Show in Winterbourne aid of St Peter's Hospice. Member Claire Drummond, who plays the horn, said: “It was a lovely atmosphere enjoyed by all, especially our four legged friends.” The band are looking forward to performing closer to home when they appear at Hanham's Summer Street Fair on July 13. Claire said the band has vacancies for players and would welcome new members into their friendly team, which meets every Friday evening from 7.30 to 9pm, although this will change to Thursday evenings from August 1. Let's put station revival campaign back on track PARISH leaders in Saltford are seeking a meeting with Bath and North East Somerset councillors to try to push forward long-held ambitions of re-opening the village railway station. With the Liberal Democrats now in control at BANES after ousting the Conservatives in the recent local government elections, those pressing for the station to come back into use hope a new administration might lead to progress in their campaign. Saltford station has been closed since 1970 and last November parish councillors wrote to regional leaders to express their “frustration” at the lack of movement on proposals to include its reinstatement within the MetroWest scheme - a project to improve rail services in the Greater Bristol area and create new or re-open stations at various sites. Saltford Parish Council said getting trains to stop once more at the station

was a high priority for the authority, with re-opening of the facility both viable and achievable. It now wants to meet with BANES leader Dine Romero, the Cabinet members for transport services and resources, and the Saltford ward councillors Duncan Hounsell and Alastair Singleton to discuss how to take the project forward. The parish council also hopes that interested local groups and organisations will be involved in the meeting. The Lib Dems have previously spoken of making a station in Saltford a reality and not just an aspiration. Saltford Parish Council chairman Chris Warren said the site for the station was an open space, with room to park about 150 cars. There was also the potential for further parking space nearby. It has been estimated that patronage of the station would be in the region of 200,000 users every year.

Skatepark opens A £150,000 skatepark which was seven years in the making has officially opened in Warmley. Warmley Forest Skatepark launched on June 9 and is already attracted skaters from as far afield as Cornwall. The project started seven years ago when the old skatepark was closed down due to vandalism. Skateboarder Dan Lacey got a group of friends together and lobbied local councillors. They set up a committee to raise funds and consult with skatepark users, residents and councillors. They received £50,000 from SUEZ Communities Trust, £50,00 from Enovert Community Trust, £30,000 from Oldland Parish Council and £20,000 from Bitton Parish Council.A final grant for £3,000 came from a residents' panel from Bromford Housing.

Outlook is brighter

Summer dangers for dogs

SUMMER is a great time to be a dog, but it’s important to be aware of a few potential dangers that it can present. Heat It goes without saying that the internal temperature of a car can skyrocket, even in a short space of time with the windows left open. It can take as little as 15 minutes for a dog to die in a hot car. Pavements and tarmacked surfaces can also get extremely hot; if you place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, and it is too hot for you, then it is too hot for your dog. Barbecues and picnics Al fresco dining can present lots of hazards for dogs. Be particularly aware of: • Grapes, raisins/sultanas, chocolate, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts • Fatty or rich food • Ingestion of objects such as kebab skewers and bones Grass seeds Grass seeds can affect many parts of the body, including the eyes, ears, nose, throat and paws. The symptoms will vary depending on where the grass seed is stuck, but symptoms are usually sudden in onset and often severe. They can sometimes be tricky to find, but successful discovery and removal usually rapidly resolves the symptoms. Insect bites and stings Wasp and bee stings are not uncommon in the summer months. The reaction can be pronounced, often causing facial swelling and, in severe cases, difficulties breathing. Contact your vet as soon as possible if they are stung. Garden dangers • Slug pellets containing metaldehyde • Plants such as Allium species, ivy, Rhododendron and foxgloves are all potentially toxic • Rodent bait containing anticoagulants can cause bleeding due to delays in blood clotting. As long as you’re aware of these potential hazards, you and your dog can enjoy the outdoors, and hopefully sunny, weather!

A £1.5 MILLION cash injection has been secured to help make Keynsham Town Centre more attractive and accessible for everyone. The investment will help to deliver improvements to the public space between Charlton Road and Rock Road, building on the introduction of the oneway system in the town centre. A further round of consultation on the details of the design will take place later this year, with work on the improvements taking place next year. The planned improvements include: • High-quality smooth paving, along with further widening of pavements to support existing businesses and encourage more shoppers. • The introduction of a distinct and coordinated suite of street furniture which will include seating, litter bins, cycle hoops, bollards, signage and trees to make visiting the town a more pleasant experience.

• An enhanced bus stop on the High Street that will offer more seating and be repositioned to allow cars to pass when a bus is stopped. • Upgrades to the signal controlled crossings on Charlton Road and at the top of Bath Hill. • Changes to pedestrian crossings and improvements to clearly segregate the cycle contra flow lane to maximise safety and improve ease of use, particularly for people with disabilities. • New lighting in the passageways to improve the links between the High Street to Ashton Way and Memorial Park. The funding was approved at the West of England Combined Authority’s (WECA) Joint Committee. Bath & North East Somerset Council secured the allocation from the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) through the Local Growth Fund (LGF), administered by WECA. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles, said: “This will complement the work we are

Call to scupper boaters behaving badly CALLS have been made for a crackdown on inconsiderate boaters in order to protect the riverbank in Mead Lane, Saltford. Complaints surround the anti-social behaviour and dropping of litter by a minority of people, as well as non-compliance with mooring limits. It has led to complaints of disruption to local householders and other users of the River Avon, as well as damage to the riverbank flora and fauna. Now Saltford Parish Council wants the riverbank to be protected from “inappropriate practices and behaviour” so everyone can enjoy the designated Site of Nature Conservation Importance.

Until a mooring trial was introduced by Bath and North East Somerset Council from 2017-18, narrow Mead Lane was not an official mooring area, despite some boaters stopping there. The trial included a mix of 48-hour mooring space and a maximum of 14 days mooring but it led to problems, including some people staying much longer than two weeks. Parish leaders said 48-hour mooring within a limited length of the lane should be the only facility offered - just from April to the end of September - and that it should be effectively monitored and enforced by BANES Council.

ummer is here and the local festival / fete season has kicked off. Saltford had a week of entertainment cumulating with the street closure on Sunday the 16th. All was going well until some mindless vandals decided to steal, damage and destroy a number of the scarecrows displayed by the local residents. This brought what had been a successful event to a sad closure. Instead of remembering the number of exciting events that had happened, people were left discussing the vandalism. If anyone has any knowledge or information that could identify the culprits then please get in contact.

n We have a new Beat Manager in the office, PC Neal Scarborough, who is on an attachment to the Keynsham office. We welcome Neal’s help in the area. He has come over from Bristol and is already making himself known with some of our locals. n Anti-social behaviour in and around the town is on the rise, which is normal for this time of year as the weather gets better. We are working hard to combat this with extra patrols and interactions with the involved parties. But like everything we deal with, if we don’t know about when and where it is happening then we can’t react and deal with this. If something happens and you need to report it

then please do so via the neighbourhood pages on the Avon and Somerset Constabulary website. n We have also suffered a number of minor fires in and around the Teviot Road / Teviot Park area. Again, any information as to the offenders would be greatly appreciated. n Now that summer is here, I'd urge people to get out and enjoy the many open spaces that Keynsham has to offer. One of the main reported issues last year, which was talked about a great deal on social media, was rubbish being left in and around our play parks. There are bins all around so please clear up after yourselves so

that these areas can be enjoyed by everyone. n As we do every year we will be running Operation Tonic, our drink-drive campaign. This is not limited to Christmas time but is used when drink-driving is likely to occur. Just remember that an officer only needs to have reasonable grounds to suspect that you have been drinking to ask you to provide a roadside breath test. This could be if you commit any traffic offence, from having a defective light to driving without due care or attention, or even not having water in your windscreen washers. We can use any offence to gain the power to request a sample, and refusal will result in arrest. n The team will be attending a number of the forthcoming local fetes, so if you see us there then please come over and have a chat. Also keep your eye peeled in the Keynsham Community Pages on Facebook, where we will be advertising events we are attending and our Beat Surgeries.

Protest over plastic waste YOUNG people from KeynshamNow staged an event in the High Street to show how much plastic we throw away each week. Ten ordinary families in Keynsham collected all the plastic they used in a week and produced a large mound of material. Members talked to passers-by about the problems of waste plastic and how to reduce, as well as reuse and recycle. They also gave out leaflets showing how best to dispose of plastics locally. Dani Phillips, chair of KeynshamNow, said: “We are slowly polluting our planet with plastic. We must be encouraged to use alternatives to plastic and even tax those who make the plastic with a levy towards the cost of cleaning it up. This would make alternatives cheaper and clean up our planet.”

Adam Harris, secretary, said: “It is young people who will have to clean up the mess caused by previous generations. We have to start now before the damage is irreversible.” Many shoppers were sympathetic and pleased to see young people trying to help a very difficult situation. Andy Wait, lead mentor of

KeynshamNow, said: “It is a credit to KeynshamNow that so many were prepared to give up their Saturday to protest.” KeynshamNow is open to all people between 12 and 20 years old with a clear connection to Keynsham. The next two meetings are July 3 and August 7 in The Space starting at 5.30pm.

Clean Air Day makes a mark PEOPLE in Keynsham and Saltford joined in efforts to mark Clean Air Day in Bath and North East Somerset . The idea behind the annual event, which this year took place on Thursday 20 June, is to improve people’s understanding of air pollution, how it affects our health and what we can do to tackle it. Motor vehicles create toxic air and Bath has particularly high levels of NO2 which can make heart and lung problems, such as asthma, much worse. On Clean Air Day residents were urged to pledge to use sustainable methods of travel while the council hosted a pop-up event in Kingsmead Square, Bath with advice and information and hands-on demonstrations of how to get around sustainably.

n SPOTLIGHT ON SALTFORD

Scarecrows and showmen were among the ingredients at the Saltford festival

SALTFORD Community Association was delighted to once again organise our Village Festival - a celebration of the village over nine days and more than 80 events. It has become a village tradition and this was the fifth and most successful so far. Some events were included for the first time and, as always, the aim was to include as many local contributors as possible. The emphasis was for the community to discover and enjoy the facilities in the village in a fun and sociable atmosphere. For this festival we welcomed a wine & cheese clothes evening, a taste of France evening, a sing-a-long community cinema showing of The Greatest Showman, a food festival with cookery and butchery demonstrations and talks, the Heritage Centre was open, a treasure hunt (open until June 30), a raffle and a Caribbean evening all for the first time. This was in addition to tried-and-tested events such as a murder mystery, a family fun day at Saltford Golf Club, a games afternoon at Saltford Sports Club, a quiz, jazz evening, school fair, five walks, daily lunchtime talks, tea dance, beetle drive, open gardens, dancing, photographic and short story competitions. Also making a return was the Taste of Saltford evening featuring food from the Bird in Hand, Thai, Jolly Sailor, Riverside, Saltford Golf Club and local Chef Michel Lemoine. Finally there were the ever popular scarecrows, which this year had a sporty theme, although some lovely scarecrows were sadly vandalised (see On the Beat on Page 9). The festival started with the traditional open morning and we were delighted

Fantastic festival brings village together to welcome more than 40 organisations connected to the Community Association. Hundreds of people came along to find out more about these organisations, and many couldn’t resist the Newton Farm bacon rolls in the community café. The official opening was performed by Grenville Jones in association with SCA Chair John Davies, and prizes for the photography and short stories were given out. The 2020 calendar, featuring photos sent in, was on sale for the first time. The festival concluded with the Old Village Day, when we closed the High Street and had a great party. The Farandole Dancers, in fabulous costumes, had a perfect backdrop against the warm, rose-clad, stone walls of the ancient Manor. Somerset Morris performed in the High Street. Children’s games were beautifully

organised by the Lions, the Village Crier rang his bell, and a Punch and Judy show attracted screams and shouts. The dog show was noisy but professionally organised. Most importantly, the weather was kind to us on this final day. The nine days would not have been such a success without the amazing work of volunteers supporting every event, and lots of people who made a mountain of cakes throughout the week. Our huge thanks to everyone who was able to help in some way. We say it each time but the festival is like the whole village going off on a wonderful holiday together for nine days. Simply great fun. Takeover bid to secure Pavilion future

SOMERDALE Pavilion - the sports, health and entertainment venue that replaced Keynsham’s Fry Club - could be taken over by Bristol-based St Monica Trust. The pavilion, on the former Cadbury chocolate factory site at Somerdale, has been managed by leisure charity Aquaterra since it was handed the keys in 2015. But negotiations are continuing into the purchase of the premises by St Monica Trust, which provides homes, care and community activities for retired people. One of the trust’s developments is at Somerdale - the recently built Chocolate Quarter retirement village. The talks it is now involved with are taking place with Mondelez, which has the Cadbury brand in its portfolio, and could include a long-term guarantee to maintain leisure facilities on the site. The pavilion was built as part of the £60 million redevelopment of the factory site, which started after decades of chocolate production came to an end in 2011. Tom Gingell, associate director of commercial finance at Mondelez, said: “Earlier this year we were approached by Bristol-

based charity, the St Monica Trust, about purchasing the Somerdale Pavilion. “The trust considers the pavilion to be a pivotal resource within the Keynsham community and a vital complement to the services that are provided in the neighbouring Chocolate Quarter retirement community, which the charity opened in 2017. “We are working with all of the parties involved, including members, to finalise a long-term plan that means the facility will continue to make a contribution to the local

community, which has always been our number one priority. This would involve the St Monica Trust taking over the day-to-day running of the Somerdale Pavilion site, as well as securing its future for generations to come, to which the trust is fully committed. “As part of the agreement, we have worked hard to ensure a covenant will be put in place to guarantee that for the next 50 years, the pavilion site is maintained at its current level to preserve the services and facilities currently enjoyed by members.”

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society Taken in 1964, this picture shows the cottages at the top of Dapps Hill, opposite the bottom of Albert Road, shortly before their demolition. On the left is the Zion Methodist Chapel, opened in 1861, with the last Methodist service held in May 1958. It was then used by the Elim Pentecostal Church and survived a little longer than the cottages. The site was once earmarked for a museum for the town but funding for this was never forthcoming.

10K runners will change young lives THE 2019 Keynsham 10K will once again support a local charity that is helping to transform young lives. The event will take place on Sunday October 6. Registration will take place from 7am, and the race will start at 9am with international track and field athlete Nick Rose. Nick, from Bristol, is a former world record holder for the 10K and Half Marathon distances and represented Britain in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. The route will start and finish outside B Block, Trajectus Way, at the Chocolate Quarter, where runners and spectators will be kept refreshed with food and drinks. Baggage and changing facilities will also be available on the day, and all runners will receive a finisher's memento at the end of the race, with prizes for the first three men and ladies, age categories and club teams. All proceeds from the race will be donated to Empire Fighting Chance. The charity is based in Easton and is renowned for its pioneering work that helps fight the impact of deprivation on young people, utilising a combination of non-impact boxing and intensive personal support to inspire young people to reach their full potential.

More than 640 people registered for the race in 2018, raising £5,000 for the cause. This year, organisers from Empire Fighting Chance and Bitton Road Runners hope to welcome around 800 people to the streets of Keynsham for the 10K’s second instalment. Sophie Birch, events fundraiser for Empire Fighting Chance, said: "This year we hope to engage even more of the Keynsham community, and would love to see more local residents get involved - whether you're running, volunteering or spectating, we want you to be part of this amazing event which is raising money to help vulnerable young people in Bristol and surrounding areas." Registration fees for the Keynsham 10K cost £14 for affiliated and £16 for non-affiliated. To sign up, please visit: keynsham10k.fullonsport.com/event/ keynsham-10k-2019/profile The charity is also looking for prominent spaces locally to display banners to help promote the race. If you can help, or would like to get your company involved, please email: sophie@empirefightingchance.org Empire Fighting Chance would like to thank their sponsors and supporters including B Block Pizza, Artworks Solutions, Mobius Works and Bitton Road Runners.

Runners at the 2018 10K race Fresh from their visit from the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex earlier this year, Empire Fighting Chance recently attended the Made By Sport charity coalition, headed up by Prince Harry and boxers Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams. The Made By Sport initiative champions grassroots sport in the UK, over a four-year campaign, which sets out to raise £40m. Empire Fighting Chance is already one step ahead of this initiative, and last year they identified the Keynsham 10K as a great way to revive an important event in the Keynsham social calendar, as well as use the proceeds to fund their work in transforming young lives in Bristol and beyond.

Well done! Ofsted success cheers primary SALTFORD Primary School is celebrating an excellent report from an Ofsted inspector. Wendy Marriott, who visited the school last month, recognised that the school had improved significantly since it was rated good in 2013. Her report said: “The school has demonstrated strong practice and marked improvement in specific areas.” She has recommended a full, twoday inspection where Saltford Primary will have the chance to earn the coveted outstanding judgement from the education watchdog. Head teacher Dawn Sage said everyone at the school, including children, staff, governors, parents and the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, would continue to work together to ensure the school was the very best that it could be. “The inspector recognised the considerable strengths of the school. She also recognised the improvement plans we have in place and the positive impact these will continue to have. "This demonstrates that we know and

understand our strengths and areas to continue to improve.” Mrs Sage added: “The hard work and commitment of our dedicated staff, fantastic children and supportive parents makes Saltford an outstanding place to learn, work and succeed. We are very proud of the many positive comments in the report.” Among others, these included praise for high-quality leadership and teaching, skilled

and effective subject leaders, a skilled governing body, and a well-planned and challenging curriculum. “The standard of pupils’ reading and writing is high and supports their good access to learning in other subjects,” Ofsted said. The report noted high achievement in reading, writing and maths, and high-quality learning experiences and extensive opportunities in music, art, dance and sport beyond the school day. The inspector highlighted the role played by Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, which the school joined in 2016, in adding impetus and capacity. It also acknowledged that Saltford Primary made a significant contribution to the trust’s effectiveness. Chief executive Andrea Arlidge said: “The Trust is very proud of Saltford School and delighted that the inspector gave the school such a strong endorsement. We are also very pleased that Ofsted recognised the positive impact of the Trust on the work of the school. Congratulations to Mrs Sage and the team for this tremendous achievement.”

Alongside a programme of performances during the weekend, as ever the highlights of the festival are the two main festival days on the Saturday and Sunday. There will contemporary and ancient songs, shanties and dance tunes from soloists and full bands including Hands On the Heron, the Mighty Shinkickers, JaneE.B, Mark Harrison and FolkLaw. In addition, this year the festival’s Saturday afternoon is expanding to include a “Family Festival” with family-oriented performances and activities. As part of this, the festival is teaming up with the Children’s World charity to bring eight world-renowned circus performance acts to the festival. Students from Circomedia will also showcase their skills, there will be a climbing wall, and a BMX show where two world-class athletes will be performing breath-taking stunts. On Sunday July 7, more than 30 local, regional and international bands will be packed into an afternoon of live music. Keynsham’s reputation for showcasing

In addition, the Love Dance Stage will again feature a range of dance and the talents of many local youngsters aged seven upwards, and the Children’s Creative Arena will cater for activities for the younger generation. Speaking of this year’s festival, organiser Ric Davison said: “The outlay for Keynsham Music Festival this year is going to exceed £90,000 for the first time. The festival would like to thank the long list of local businesses who contribute to the festival through sponsorship, and particularly this year, the Chocolate Quarter (St Monica’s Trust). "The festival can only exist thanks to the generosity of donations and sponsorship of the town.” Festival goers will also be able to enjoy a range of stalls and delicious offerings from a range of food and drink providers. Green Belt battlers face new challenge

Campaigners say Saltford and Keynsham both need their Green Belts protecting Picture: Phil Harding

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to protect Saltford’s Green Belt are gearing up for a new battle in September. They say housing development should be on brownfield sites in Bristol and South Gloucestershire rather than on farmland in Bath & North East Somerset. Saltford Environmental Group has submitted its formal statement on the West of England Joint Spatial Plan and will make its points at the Public Examination hearing in September. It objects to the proposal for a mixed development including 1,500 homes at Pixash Lane known as the North Keynsham Strategic Development Location (SDL) on the grounds that this is not a sustainable

development. It also strongly opposes any suggestion that 500 homes could be built in Saltford. SEG says that the Green Belt between Keynsham and Saltford is an essential part of what makes the semi-rural area a desirable place to live. “Over-development of the town puts all that at risk and would eventually merge Keynsham with Bristol and Saltford into one large conurbation. "As Saltford’s Green Belt, just like Keynsham’s, is under constant pressure for development from developers, it is imperative that both settlements retain their own Green Belt as a buffer to prevent them from merging and to preserve their

individual rural setting and character,” the group says. It wants an assurance that any further development in the area will be incremental, with services provided before homes are built. “The transport infrastructure in place in the Keynsham area now (2019) cannot cope with existing peak travel times as a result of recent new housing developments. “That has a knock-on effect for Saltford, where main and side roads become heavily congested at peak times and/or when small hold-ups occur on Keynsham’s over-used road system during commuter and school run periods with high levels of air pollution,” the group says.

The rocky road that led to ordination KEYNSHAM’S new curate Nigel Williams has told how his journey to ordination began when he was thrown out of school. He said that after he was ‘encouraged’ to leave at 18 following a series of misdemeanours, he decided to pray. “I said, ‘All right God, if you’re real, sort my life out.’ Within about a week I’d had many conversations with people and was starting my first degree in theology. “I’d grown up as a punk rock guitarist with all the sex, drugs, rock and roll sort of lifestyle and just had a completely 180 degree turn in my life about where my priorities were.” Nigel later spent time working in America with a charity that works to prevent children joining gangs.

“I confiscated guns off tenyear-old boys –it was completely different to the New Forest where I was living. It really strengthened my faith,” he said. A few years later he found he could no longer ignore the call to ordination. He has now completed his training at theological college. Nigel, who is moving here with his wife Emily and baby son Isaac, will join the Keynsham Team Ministry. He said:“I can’t wait to get stuck into the church family again and see what God’s doing, because training is a weird time when you’re sort of part of a church but you’re not. “We really just want to see what God’s going to be doing in Keynsham and how he’s going to use us as a family.”

n NEWS FROM WANSDYKE DISTRICT CUBS

Cubs go back in time

A total of 300 Cub Scouts and leaders from Wansdyke District camped at Chelwood and enjoyed a weekend on a theme of Time Travel. Activities included archery, moon-walking, caving simulation, semaphore communication, laser tag, and a climbing wall. The camp was visited by two Viking re-enactment groups who set up a living village at the camp, complete with animals, and finished with combat training and a ‘battle’.

Not long now! USA adventure looms for four at jamboree It was 18 months ago when four Scouts from Keynsham - Nathan, Lucy, Emma and James, pictured left - were selected to represent the UK at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia USA. Since then they have been learning new skills and teambuilding with Scouts from across the South West who will be joining them on the experience, and preparing themselves for three weeks of adventure. During the last month they have been sharing what they have learned with all the Keynsham Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, as well as teaching them a little about the three host countries - USA, Mexico and Canada. Who could believe there will be

over 45,000 people in camp! The Scout campsite, called the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, is 10,600 acres and comes complete with its own white water rafting river. The four Keynsham Scouts wish to thank everybody who has supported them in their preparations. We are sure they will be fantastic ambassadors for Keynsham, Wansdyke and the wider UK, and we look forward to hearing about their exploits when they return. Good luck!

The camp fire on the Saturday was followed by a spectacular fire show by circus performer Livi Little, at the end of which she turned herself into a human firework. On Sunday morning there was colour run and obstacle course, then it was time to pack up leave for home. Appropriately, a time capsule was buried during the weekend. Camp Leader Janet Turner said: “We’ve all had a brilliant time, despite earlier fears about the weather.”

Wellsway traffic peril sparks pedestrian FOLLOWING a spate of vehicles mounting pavements and near-misses on the Wellsway, Bath and North East Somerset Council has told Keynsham Voice that it is looking into ways to improve the safety of pedestrians. Gemma Mitchell and her neighbours spoke out in August 2017 and again in February of this year about incidents outside their homes near the junction with Bath Hill. These included speeding cars, being clipped by wing mirrors, one driver crashing into a garden wall and another hitting a telegraph pole as they lost control on the corner. Gemma was told by the council that in spite of the residents’ letters of concern, the stretch of road had not been included in planned improvements for 2019/20. In a letter from the council’s traffic management department, it was explained that any road schemes must be included in the approved Transport Improvement Plan (TIP) before they could progress. However, following another incident on Sunday June 2, where a car mounted the pavement and crashed into a wall, Gemma spoke to newly elected Keynsham

by Keri Beckingham East Councillors Hal Macfie and Andy Wait about her concerns. They arranged to meet the B&NES traffic department to discuss speeding and safety solutions for the road. Speaking about the latest developments, Gemma said: “As Keynsham has grown, the traffic has got worse, especially on this part of the road. Despite two previous crashes in the same part and numerous near-misses, the council have said unless there are fatalities they can’t do anything about it. “Before they were elected, Hal and Andy had been really good at trying to get a foot in door and find a way for a solution to be found. And now that they are B&NES councillors I’m confident that something will be done. The outcome of their meeting was more positive than I thought it would be, but now that Hal and Andy have more clout we’ve had a more positive reaction, which is great. “As far as I’m aware, the options that have been discussed for improvements so far have been railings, speed cushions or bollards being installed, as well as building an island

and having priority passing, which I think is a brilliant idea.” Councillor Wait said: “Hal Macfie and I have been investigating traffic on Wellsway for nearly a year now and we believe that it is a very dangerous road, particularly for pedestrians. The situation has been made worse due to the re-routing of the 178 bus from the Chandag Estate to Wellsway. “Last year we lobbied for a pedestrian crossing between the Rockhill Estate and Manor Road, for the benefit of school children and those residents wishing to use the bus stop. This has been agreed and should be in place by March 2020. “We are campaigning for another crossing or island refuge further up near Courtenay Road for the bus stop there. "The worst part for pedestrians is at the north end of Wellsway by the New Inn. There the road is very narrow and very dangerous. "Pedestrians report being hit by wing mirrors from lorries and vans. There is also photographic evidence that the 178 and lorries sometimes mount the pavement in that area. It is a very difficult environment but we are looking at potential pedestrian

"Currently, the plan is for the 40mph to start at its current position and continue right up to Burnett. We would prefer 20mph to 30mph as now, but that 30mph would extend to just beyond Courtenay Road and we will be campaigning for this.” A spokesman for B&NES Council told Keynsham Voice: “We are aware of the concerns of residents living on Wellsway, and a study looking at options for improvements along Wellsway will be considered for inclusion in the 2020/21 Transport Improvement Programme. "Each year the council receives a large number of requests for highways improvements, which we prioritise taking into consideration a number of factors, such as accident history, whether a scheme could improve air quality, and the likelihood of being able to deliver the scheme.”

New-look leisure centre in good shape New fitness studios and a cafe are part of the revamp of the leisure centre THE first phase of the £11 million refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre has been completed. The new ground-floor fitness suite, studios, changing facilities, soft play and café opened to the public on June 17 and was due to be officially opened on Thursday June 27 by Dine Romero, leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, and Paul Crossley, cabinet member for community services. Work to transform the ageing building into a more modern and welcoming centre began in May last year. The project is being delivered by Bath & North East Somerset

Council though its contractor Kier, in partnership with GLL, which operates and manages the leisure centre on behalf of the council under the Better brand. The squash courts and sports hall have already been refurbished, and by the autumn the leisure centre will also boast a new teaching pool and refurbished main pool hall. The council secured £500,000 of funding towards the project from the National Lottery through a bid to the Strategic Facilities Fund, which is administered by Sport England. Councillor Crossley said: “Keynsham Leisure Centre has long been in need of

updating so before work began local people were asked what they’d like to see there. Their views helped shape the refurbishment of the centre, and the fantastic new facilities are now fit to meet the needs of the community well into the future.” Justine Foster, from GLL, said: “The new facilities look great and we are sure that the centre will be popular and continue to deliver the health and wellbeing agenda within the town and the surrounding areas.” To find out more about Keynsham leisure centre go to: http://www.better.org.uk/ keynsham

nTHOUGHT NEWS FOR THE MONTH With Kevin Durrant, of Keynsham Baptist Church

Our ravaging of the earth and its climate merely to increase our material wealth has created a sword-wielding angel in the form of worsening floods, droughts and food security

I’M sure many will remember Dr Dolittle from the books by Hugh Lofting and the film starring Rex Harrison. Dr Dolittle had the gift of being able to talk with the animals and I wonder what things we would learn if we were given that same gift? The Bible’s Old Testament includes a very strange story in which a man is startled to hear the donkey he’s riding begin speaking in a human voice. As you read the story in Numbers 22, you feel like you’ve accidently wandered into a film script for Shrek! Balaam, a kind of holy man, is riding to a meeting with the king of Moab because he’s been offered money to place a curse on a group of Israelites who, having escaped

from their Egyptian slave masters, are travelling through the king’s territory. An angel with drawn sword stands in Balaam’s way, but the Holy Man is so blinded by the money he’s been promised he can’t see the danger ahead. The donkey does see the angel and takes evasive action, only to receive a beating from its master. The donkey then utters a complaint in a human voice, and the shock opens Balaam’s eyes to see the angel. He suddenly realises that the animal had been warning him about the destruction his greed was leading him towards. For me, the story has a powerful resonance with the situation we face today. Like Balaam, we’ve been travelling

down a road that leads to destruction. Our ravaging of the earth and its climate merely to increase our material wealth has created a sword-wielding angel in the form of worsening floods, droughts and food security. What’s worse is that, like Balaam, we seem willing to curse poorer nations with the worst effects of actions. If only we will listen to the voice of the animals, who call to us through their falling numbers and their sad extinctions. Like the canaries that once warned coal miners of the presence of noxious gases, the creatures of our amazing planet are pleading with us to change course. If only we will take a lesson from the Bible – and from Dr Dolittle – and listen to what they are saying.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Celebrating the people who keep our communities safe THIS month, we celebrated the men, women and teams who go above and beyond to keep our communities safe at this year’s Be Proud Awards. The awards evening is my favourite night of the year and it is a privilege to be in the same room with so many inspirational, selfless and dedicated individuals. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to send in nominations as the awards give us the opportunity to celebrate our policing heroes for their efforts. To our finalists, winners and everyone who was nominated I would like to wish you a massive well done and thank you for all that you do. We also showed our support for World Elder Abuse awareness day and asked local communities to recognise the value older people bring to our communities.

The awareness day focuses on the problem of physical, emotional and financial abuse of older people as sadly there are a growing number of criminals who seek to take advantage of our senior community. Older people can be more vulnerable to cons, frauds, doorstep crime and distraction burglary and there are individuals out there who exploit the fragility that comes with older age. So I was delighted to see a new Avon and Somerset Police initiative that hopes to tackle isolation within the older the community, the ‘Chat Bench.’ The ‘Chat Bench’ is a very simple concept where a sign is placed on a bench, typically in a park or town centre that encourages those using the bench to have a chat with each other. I hope it encourages

people of all ages to start more conversations as we need to remember that a simple ”hello” could make a big difference to someone’s day. I will also be supporting the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Honour Based Violence on 14 July. The awareness day was set up by the charity Karma Nirvana following the tragic death of Shafilea Ahmend in 2003 and remembers the men and women affected by so-called ‘honour’ killings and honour-based abuse. Forced marriage and honourbase violence are particularly difficult crimes to tackle as much tends to go on behind closed doors and victims are scared to come forward. The victims are sadly at risk from those closest to them – their families and relatives. There is no honour in

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes that cause suffering and in Avon and Somerset we will continue to work closely with affected communities and our partners across health, education, social care and the voluntary sector. I hope on awareness days like this we encourage victims and survivors to come forward and report these crimes to us.

oris Johnson, the front-runner for the Conservative leadership elections, has recently outlined his proposals for super-fast broadband if he were chosen to replace Theresa May. Writing in the Telegraph, Boris said it was "a disgrace that this country should suffer from a deep digital divide, so that many rural areas and towns are simply left behind" and promised that his government could deliver "full fibre for all by 2025" which would be eight years quicker than the Government's current "laughably unambitious" plans. I agree with Boris and have, in the past, written to the Government about the unfairness of the situation. Many rural areas have been disadvantaged by the lack of decent broadband causing an unequal playing field, crucially in the business sector. As Boris correctly pointed out, the guarantee of every home in

Car team is top with customers

Britain having access to superfast broadband sooner is one step to bridging the gap, part of his “moral mission to unite Brexit Britain.” Broadband connects the local economy to the global one so it is imperative that, if we are to compete optimally, this facility can be accessed by everyone in the United Kingdom. There are also many advantages to ensuring that this infrastructure is established: with super-fast broadband there is less travel translating to environmental and cost benefits; the continued success of London and the South East can be spread to the rest of the country; rural areas, including the farming community, that have previously been left behind will prosper. This is an enterprising policy but an achievable one that is vital to sealing our post-Brexit success.

Guardian Angel So, you think I look pensive. It matters not one jot, whether I am a Cherub or a Seraph. I am tired and I am weary. I may be ten feet tall and strong as stone, But I am worked to my limit and have no time to rest. To be a Guardian Angel is so challenging. Our subjects wander into danger more often than they realise. Why, twice today I plucked my friend from the jaws of death . . . twice. Both instances were close calls requiring me to stop time itself and move a speeding juggernaut. I had to, or he would have been lost in major motor accidents. Twice in a day! Imagine it!! Of course he did not realise any of it, And he did not see me, or feel a difference ~ he never does. It's not permitted whenever I am forced to act. Yes, he did not realise he was in the slightest danger. Yet somehow he knows I am with him always, and am his minder, and his keeper. He has known that, always, and takes great comfort from it. He calls me whenever he is frightened or overwhelmed With endless complications and impossibilities in his life. I am there for him, always, as my Father decreed, From the very day that he was born. From the very day I earned my wings. Call me Clarence. Edwin Rigg

n BACK TO NATURE

How we can help meadow magic to thrive Following our inspiring talk by Chris Sperring in April, with much talk of rewilding our gardens and environments as an essential way forward, we were thrilled to learn that B&NES has decided to reduce the number of times it cuts grass verges alongside roads and dual carriageways. And that the reason is not entirely cost. On its website the council states the ecological and social benefits for this cutback (reducing air pollution, for example), something we can all take on board in our own gardens. Verges support hundreds of species of flowering plants, which in turn are a vital food source for bees, butterflies and many other insects. Similarly wildflower meadows.

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group A wildflower meadow is something magical to behold. Full of promise as it is growing in the spring, with flowers bursting through once summer is here. Of course there are two types of wild meadows: • Frequently now seen on dual carriageway central reservations are the patches of annual meadow, brimming with cornflowers and poppies. However these, as the

name suggests, are plants that only grow once and then you are in the hand of the gods as to whether they will reseed for the following year. The councils need to replant each year to create a display. • Of much more interest are the perennial wildflower meadows. Maybe not so colourful but full of diverse mixes of wild flowers, from trefoils to ox eye daisies with their sunny heads turned to the skies, ragged robin and bugles to

duo

spiky purple knapweeds and with luck some of our native species of orchid, all adored by nectar-loving insects including pollinating bees and butterflies. So how do we go about creating a wild meadow in a patch of the garden? It is possible to grow an annual wildflower mix from seed, either plant in a pot or in a flower bed (any size is possible). Poppies in particular like disturbed ground and, as

n BACK TO NATURE suggested above, are unlikely to reseed from the initial planting maybe think of collecting the seed to use the following year. But to create the iconic wildflower meadow takes a lot more work, says Kathy Farrell (Vice chair Keynsham Group), who had a meadow planted in her garden 5 years ago. She says it is now well established and a delight at this time of year. Her advice: It is not possible to just let your grass grow long as these grass species will overpower anything else trying to get a foothold. Wildflowers require a soil deprived of nutrients and so it is first necessary to remove the top few inches of soil - no easy job! However this has the benefit of removing many roots of weeds and grass that may be present in the ground you want to plant up. Once the ground is prepared then you can use a wildflower seed mix, preferably one suited to the area you live in (online companies can advise on this). An alternative nowadays is laying wild flower turf, certainly not cheap but quick and easy! It is best planted in the autumn or early

Smelling a fragrant orchid - photo by Liz Wintle, field trips officer spring. A wildflower meadow also needs upkeep including cutting back and removal of the dead plants (after seed pods have been allowed to disperse their treasure) to ensure the ground doesn’t become too rich in nutrients. However the results of your efforts will be rewarded when next year (and following years as some seeds will take time to germinate) your meadow emerges from the ground and you can watch as bees and butterflies find your little wildflower haven.

And members of the Keynsham Branch met at Chancellors Farm near Priddy on a showery morning in June to enjoy the orchid-rich hay meadows by Somerset Wildlife Trust reserve warden James Ozolins. There is no public access to this site, as it lies within the "ricochet" area of the nearby MoD cadet live firing range, but fortunately there was no firing on the day! The area was known for lead mining as far back as Roman times, as lead was accessible on or near

the surface from fissures in the limestone. Wind-blown loess soil (from glacier fronts) also contributed to the range of acidity and alkalinity of the fields, leading to a great variation of types of flower in each field - 180 species of wild flowers have been recorded here! We managed to find 38 actually in flower; each month the colour palette changes as different ones come into bloom. We were too early in the season for meadow saffron, but we found plenty of heath-spotted and fragrant orchids and their hybrid offspring. Other species of particular interest were betony, yellow rattle, (a semi-parasitic plant that reduces the vigour of grasses, allowing more beneficial species to grow), tormentil, field germander, both wood and heath speedwell. We also found many maidenhair spleenwort ferns and mosses in the old dry stone walls, a legacy from the time of the Enclosures in the late 17th century, 200 years after the farm was first mentioned on the West Harptree Liberty Map! A truly ancient and wonderful site that we were privileged to visit.

Joan Day FSA - a remarkable lady

A

t the end of May the funeral took place of Mrs Joan Day, one of the founder members of the Society and someone who made Joan Day 1928-2019 a lasting contribution to local history and industrial archaeology in this part of the world. We take a look at her life and achievements. Born in Bath in 1928, Joan had a difficult early life, as her father died when she was an infant, her mother had to move several times, then her schooling was disrupted by the Baedeker air-raids on the city. OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome DATES FOR THE DIARY Sunday 14th July A 6-mile circular walk from Newton St Loe church, taking in Stantonbury Hill and Stanton Prior. This is a very hilly walk with stiles, so not for the faint-hearted. Transport from the Fox & Hounds car park will be arranged. Meeting at 10.00.

W

ith four hours of torrential rain falling in the early hours of Sunday morning, it was with some trepidation that 20 walkers set off for their stroll to join in the Saltford Festival. However the gods were with us and we managed the hour long walk in rain-free conditions.

As usual this popular village festival did not disappoint, with numerous stalls lining the High Street, and loads of attractions to tempt the eye. In the school hall were photographs of Saltford of yesteryear, and Joy Clifford found one of herself at primary school which she had not seen before.

Sadly the rain returned while we were there. Some opted to stay and make their own way home, but the majority congregated in the grounds of the Bird in Hand to listen to the band performing there. It was a sociable crowd that headed back to Keynsham and managed to complete the walk in the dry. A good time was had by all.

Sunday 21st July This walk is in conjunction with the Local History Society. Starting at 2.30pm from the Memorial Park cafe, the walk is entitled 'Discovering Keynshams' Pubs'. This one shouldbe fun, as some of the current pubs might be included! All walks are free Everybody welcome. Donations are appreciated for the transport on the Newton St Loe walk if used.

Library of things

H

ow many gadgets do you own that only get used once or twice a year? How much useful stuff is gathering dust in the attic? How often do you need something and wish you could borrow it rather than buy it because you’ll only use it once? The Library of Things lets people borrow stuff that they need occasionally but don’t want to buy. It’s great for individuals because it’s affordable and convenient. It’s great for communities because it brings people together. And it’s kind to the planet because it’s reducing unnecessary consumption. We’re lucky to have a Library of Things in Bath. Called Borrow It, it’s funded by Bath and West Community Energy, and run by Timebank. Borrow It’s catalogue is extensive – you can borrow anything from tents to mowers, from ice cream makers to steam cleaners. There are angle grinders and drills, ladders and sanders for those one-off DIY projects. Borrow It is always looking for more things to add to its catalogue, so do get in touch with them if you have any unwanted items you’d like

OMINATIONS are open for Sirona Care & Health's annual Awards for Excellence – and your help is needed. Sirona is a not-for-profit social enterprise providing high-quality NHS and local authority-funded community health and care services across South Gloucestershire, parts of Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset. It was founded on October 1, 2011, and holds an annual ceremony to recognise the achievements of staff close to its birthday each year. Sirona chairman Simon Knighton, pictured, said: "We have always said our staff are the most important part of Sirona and recognising their achievements is really close to my heart. “From the thousands of compliments and letters which we receive each year from people in the communities we serve, we know our staff deliver high quality services, day in, day out. “They all give care as they would want for their own loved one, which is part of our Taking it Personally ethos. "While the majority of award categories are for internal nominations, we have one called ‘I think they deserve it’ and we are looking for the public's help to find a winner or winners.

“We want to hear about the person who brightened up your day because of their welcoming smile or who made a difference to your care in the way they tailored the service to suit you or something else. “Last year, we had so many nominations we gave two awards, with the Hanham district nursing team scooping one and the staff at our extra care facility at St John's Court in Bath the other. People told us about the hard work and dedication of both teams, with the nurses described by one individual as her ‘safety net’, while the team at St John's were praised for making a difference to a tenant's life by encouraging her independence.” If you want to nominate someone, please send details to communications@sirona-cic. org.uk by August 1. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

And Then There Were None Agatha Christie A classic from the queen of crime – Agatha Christie. Ten complete strangers are invited to a secluded mansion off the coast of Devon by a mysterious U.N. Owen. Over dinner, a record is played and the host’s voice is heard accusing each of the guests of hiding a guilty secret. And that evening, a debonair racing driver, Tony Martson, is found murdered and the ten statues on the dining room table reduces down to nine. As the story progresses, so does the tension as the guests begin to realise that the killer is among them and will strike again….. and again…. This is a great psychological thriller that will keep you guessing right till the end, and of course with a superb twist as well. Adult Non-Fiction

Ladies Mile Victoria Hughes If you happen to pass the Local History section at Keynsham Library then you may want to borrow this little gem - a small book packed with amazing social commentary on life in pre-war Bristol. This was written by Victoria Hughes herself and so some of the language is a little dated and attitudes have definitely changed for the better. However it is a

fascinating story. Out of work, Victoria was offered a job as a Lavatory Assistant on Clifton Downs in September 1929. She was at this positon right up to the 1960s. In this book she describes the different women who used the facilities – their lives, their relationships and their work ,which at times was one of great hardship. This is a very interesting book.

Experience France, Lonely Planet – as reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Oulalala, look at what we just received! Bonjour to the special edition from Lonely Planet about France! Quelle surprise! The only reasons I can see for Lonely Planet to produce such a thing are because their guide books lack 1) pictures, 2) depth on the culture and history of the country, 3) itinerary to propose to their readers. This book proposes all that but its huge format doesn’t make it tourist friendly (it can’t fit in your pocket, I am afraid). If you didn’t know about the culture and history of your close neighbours, it can be of some help even if it carries plenty of clichés

and mistakes which made me jump through my read… The itineraries are interesting - there is “un je ne sais quoi “ to this country which invites you to try to find out its secrets paths and treasures far from the tourist madding crowd. Special mention for their food address: worth a try. This Lonely Planet edition didn’t reach my expectation but c’est la vie! You want a tip? Always ask a local, they know better! Voila!

It is called Space Chase this year, so look out for all the amazing space displays in your local libraries. The Summer Reading Challenge is for children aged 4-11 years old and the challenge is to read six books over the summer holidays. The books can be fiction or non-fiction but must come from your local library. There is a great booklet for you to record your books in, filled with games and stickers to collect. So let the challenge begin, and try:

From this moment on the adventures begin and George's life will never be the same again, as Cosmos will open a portal to any point in outer space! So who knows who George will meet and what he will learn about the mysteries of space!

The Boy from Mars

George's Secret Key to the Universe

Simon James One day Stanley’s mum had to go away for work so Stanley decided to go to Mars. He got in his homemade rocket and blasted off, heading for outer space. When the rocket came back to earth, a small Martian crawled out. Stanley’s brother Will assumed it was Stanley but it was not, it was a Martian here to explore earth. Suddenly everyone realised that Martians did not need to wash their hands or eat their vegetables and could get into a bit of trouble at school. Read on to see what happened to the little Martian!

Lucy & Stephen Hawking From the imagination of the late Professor Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy comes a series of books about George. It begins with George's pet pig breaking through the fence into next door’s garden. Here he meets his new neighbours - the scientist, Eric, and his daughter, Annie, as well as a super-intelligent computer called Cosmos.

Promoted Ks get set to do battle PREPARATIONS are under way for the start of Keynsham Town’s 2019-20 campaign following their promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division last season. These days there is little “time off” over the summer for those involved with the club. The players have already reported back for pre-season training, and their schedule of friendlies before the league campaign kicks off on 3 August is already in place as follows: Friday 12 July: Wells City (a) 19:30 kick-off Tuesday 16 July: Bishop Sutton (a) 19:30 kick-off Tuesday 23 July ALMONDSBURY (H) 19:45 kick-off Saturday 27 July PAULTON ROVERS (H) 15:00 kick-off Tuesday 30 July YATE TOWN (H) 19:45 kick-off Off the field, there have been some important committee changes at the club. Longserving Club Chairman Malcolm Trainer has been rewarded for his loyal service by becoming Life President. Adrian Cole steps up to the Chairman role from Treasurer, with Terrie French joining the committee as Treasurer (in addition to her sterling efforts in the tea hut on match days!) Adrian Cole said: “We understand that a big part of football’s popularity comes from the joy of being part of a community: a team, a town, a social network, or the wider sporting community. “Following on from the success last season across the club, we are looking to build even stronger links with local businesses and the community. “Every match day the club welcomes supporters to the AJN Stadium from around the country, and we are looking at

Keynsham Town are already setting their sights on a successful start to their Toolstation Western League Premier Division campaign a number of opportunities to help support businesses earn some additional well-deserved publicity and support the development of the club. “If you are interested in taking advantage of one of our advertising, hospitality or sponsorship packages for next season, then get in touch for more details”. Club Secretary Julian French added: “Season tickets are now on sale for our first Premier Division campaign since 2006. Adult tickets cost £80, which represents a good saving over the 20 home league matches we will have. Under-18s remain free of charge, and tickets for our more mature supporters (65+) cost £55. To encourage as many Ks fans to Crown Fields as possible, we are also offering an “early bird” discount on these prices up to 31 July”. More club news, including new player signings and the August Premier League schedule for the Ks, will be in our August issue. You can keep up with the club’s news on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).

Twickenham honour for lads

Keynsham RFC Under-11 players meeting former England star Martin Johnson on the pitch at Twickenham WE might be well into the summer sporting season but memories of the 2019 Gallagher Premiership Rugby final will live long in the memory for youngsters from Keynsham RFC Under-11s. The lads walked out on the Twickenham turf thanks to their success in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup tournament hosted by Bristol Bears. Their reward also included the chance to watch Exeter Chiefs and Saracens battle it out for the title as well as meeting former England star Martin Johnson pre-match. Keynsham player Jake Smith was awarded the honour of being nominated for the Junior Land Rover Discovery of the

Season award. He said: “It was really exciting to be at Twickenham and I was proud to be nominated for the award. “Our club did really well to get here though – it was a team effort and all the other clubs have done well to get here too. “We were all so proud to go to Twickenham. I have seen my favourite team Bristol play here before, but I have never been to a Premiership Rugby final. I was raring to go when I found out we would be walking out on the Twickenham pitch.” Keynsham Under-11s were one of 24 under-11 and under-12 teams in attendance for the final – representing two sides for each age category from the festivals hosted by

each of the 12 Gallagher Premiership Rugby clubs throughout the season. This is the 11th year of the national grassroots rugby initiative, with more than 85,000 youngsters participating in the event to date – enough to fill Twickenham Stadium. Players such as Newcastle Falcons’ Callum Chick started life on the pitches of the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup, with Land Rover ambassador Johnson praising the opportunities afforded to players at a young age. Land Rover has heritage in rugby at all levels; from grassroots to elite, sharing and understanding the values at the heart of the game. Follow @LandRoverRugby

July, 2019

Good news and sad news from the green IN spite of the inclement weather, the green at Keynsham Bowling Club is being widely used as internal club competitions get under way in addition to regular league games. The Ray Percival Cup was won by Mary Millard, Martin Barrett and Cliff Springer and a couple of weeks later 24 men spent a day competing, which resulted in Dick Ollis and Ken Gaull going through to the Mens Two Wood Final to be played later in the season. Each week three men’s teams compete in the Bristol and District League on a Thursday

The Friday men’s triples team is certainly experiencing a good run. The ladies also compete in the ladies North Somerset League and a mixes side plays in the Somerset Mixed League. A consistent feature of life at Keynsham has always been the members roll up on a Monday evening when players of all levels come together, both men and ladies with

teams being selected on arrival. Not only is it a good way of socialising with other members it also provides the new members to get some good tips and experience from the more established players. We have unfortunately recently lost two of our members. Firstly Adrian Parker, a much liked club member passed away after a long illness. We then lost John Mead, one of our longest serving members who was our ex President and for many years our green manager. Both of them will be greatly missed.
