It’s a wrap for iconic chocolate factory symbol Former chocolate factory workers are due to gather at Somerdale to watch as the iconic one-storey tall “Cadbury’s” sign is removed. The lettering was due to be taken down on Friday, October 2, as part of the building’s £60 million transformation into a care community by charity St Monica Trust. While some had speculated the sign might be auctioned off, it seems only the apostrophe will be kept for posterity as the chocolate firm has asked for the sign to be broken up. Permission has been granted, however, for St Monica Trust chief executive David Williams to present the apostrophe to Fry’s archivist and former factory employee Hugh Evans in recognition of his work to share the history of the site, presenting talks and film shows and assisting with M Shed’s Chocolate! exhibition in 2013. Mr Evans, who began work at the factory in 1975 and had roles including microbiological technician, hygiene manager and quality, health and safety and environment manager,

said: “Cadbury, or Fry’s as it was originally, was a good company to work for. “A lot of people of my generation did 35 to 40 years’ service. It was a stunning setting to work in and we had lots of fun and lots of laughs. “We used to joke you could be born on site, go to school on site and work on site – soon you will be able to live on site as part of a retirement community.” St Monica Trust is creating 151 assisted living apartments and a 90-bed care home expected to open in spring 2017. Mr Williams said: “We feel that we are witnessing a moment in history as the Cadbury’s sign comes down, and we start work on transforming this landmark factory building. “This site has meant so much to generations of local people, including Hugh Evans. We are delighted to be able to present the ‘Fry’s Archivist’ with the apostrophe from the iconic Cadbury’s sign. All at St Monica Trust are looking forward to our role as custodian of this landmark building.”

Behind schedule, but the show goes on for tower The unveiling ceremony was right on time – although those standing under Keynsham’s new clocktower could only check that by looking at their own watches! Many in the crowd took the delay in the completion of the long-awaited landmark in good humour, with one remarking it gave it a “timeless” quality while another said at least its three faces couldn’t disagree over the time with only one installed. Nevertheless, people surrounded the tower in Market Walk on September 19 to get a close look at the detailed artwork produced over the last year by artist Sebastien Boyesen using ideas, memories, photos and artefacts shared by residents to represent the town’s history and community of today. Four-and-a-half-year-old Oliver Sheppard and Shirley Janes, 81, cut the ribbon on the clocktower, with fellow residents, the leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Councillor

the clocktower after she sent it in when she heard the project was appealing for photos and items from local people. After cutting the ribbon, she said: “I couldn’t believe that I’ve been given the honour. I’ve lived in Keynsham since 1958 and I love it to bits. I think the clocktower is an amazing piece for the town, a real talking point. And to have my family immortalised on it is unbelievable, I feel so part of Keynsham.” At the time of going to print, work on the clocktower was continuing and the clocks were still not working. Councillor Alan Hale said he was disappointed with the situation and would be discussing the issues with council officers. He added: “I am desperately disappointed because there was a long lead-in time and my view is that it should have been properly completed in time. Here we are, nearly nine days later, and it’s still not finished.”

‘Topping out’ marks halfway point for new fire station at Hicks Gate

Six months after the project began, construction work on Keynsham’s new fire station has reached the halfway point. A steel frame and floors have been created at the site next to Hicks Gate roundabout and work to clad the structure is under way. Crews from Keynsham and Brislington fire stations will be amalgamated at the site, which is expected to open early next year as a full-time fire station. Chairman of Avon Fire Authority, Councillor Peter Abraham, said: “I’m delighted with the progress being made at Hicks Gate, which will be the first brand new fire station opened in Avon since 1980. “Work remains on target for the station to be operational in early 2016, providing vital services to the whole area and to the communities of Keynsham and Brislington in particular.” The new fire station at Hicks Gate is being built by Willmott Dixon and will cost £6.2 million.

Avon Fire Authority chairman Cllr Peter Abraham, vice-chairs Cllr Mike Drew and Cllr Chris Jackson, authority member Cllr Donald Davis, B&NES Council leader Cllr Tim Warren and senior officers from Avon Fire & Rescue Service and Willmott Dixon The project is part of Avon Fire and Rescue Service’s Investing for the Future Programme, which is designed to save the service £4.5million a year. Meanwhile, plans to move the fire authority’s HQ from Bristol city centre to the site of Keynsham’s existing fire station in Temple Street have been described as “up in the air”,

despite plans having been drawn up by architects and submitted to B&NES planning officers. Keynsham councillor Alan Hale, who is also a member of Avon Fire Authority, said he was told at the body’s most recent meeting that other options were being looked at – in particular a ready-built office unit in Emersons Green with more scope for

parking than in Keynsham. He said: “I understand that Emersons Green is seen as possibly a cheaper option. I have expressed my disappointment and concern to the chair of the authority because as far as planning officers were concerned everything was running towards having the right type of building in place here in Keynsham.”

Fly-tipping “on a huge scale” is happening regularly on a road on the outskirts of Keynsham, says a concerned resident, who hopes witnesses may come forward to help stop the culprits. Over the last few months, large amounts of rubbish have been strewn across the Durley Hill bus slip road at Hicks Gate on at least five occasions – the most recent on September 24. The resident, who has asked to remain anonymous, says he uses the route to travel to work in Bristol and littering has always been a minor issue in the area, but now it has escalated to a “disgusting” level. He said: “Over the last few months there have been five instances of fly-tipping on a huge scale. It appears a van or lorry travels up the road with someone unloading the lorry as it goes, just chucking the rubbish out of the back while intentionally trying to make as much mess as possible. “All instances have been done in exactly the same manner so I would imagine is carried out by the same culprit.” Bath and North East Somerset Council’s cleaning team has

attended to clear the rubbish on previous occasions, but now the resident has called for CCTV to be installed at the site. B&NES Council has said it is purchasing a small number of cameras that will be moved between flytipping sites. He added: “It’s a totally mindless crime and one I appreciate cannot be prevented very easily, however I thought

I would bring this to your attention as your readers may see something they could report if witnessed.” A council spokesperson said: “Fly-tipping is a problem faced by all local authorities. Within Bath and North East Somerset there are particular hotspots which the council regularly monitors. “Where the evidence allows

we will always prosecute. To assist in this we are in the process of purchasing a small number of cameras. These will rotate between sites. Signs will be installed advising of their presence and warning potential fly-tippers of the penalties they may face. “We welcome information from the public on any littering or fly-tipping. Any witness statements such as descriptions of vehicles and registration numbers are very welcome as they help us to pursue a prosecution. Incidents can be reported through Council Connect. “The council also works with neighbouring local authorities, including South Gloucestershire, where we have evidence of flytipping that crosses boundaries.” To report waste dumped on public land, call Council Connect on 01225 39 40 41 or email council_connect@bathnes.gov. uk.

Residents rally to help efforts in refugee crisis

My pet is afraid of coming to the vets, what can I do? A trip to the vets can be overwhelming for our pets. With lots of unusual smells and uncomfortable prodding, the experience can be rather stressful. Here are some handy tips to help make the trip to the vet less scary for your pet: l Visit the vets frequently, even if they’re not unwell. You don’t have to have an appointment, just pop in to weigh them on the scales or even when you’re just picking up a product. Our receptionists are expert treat givers and cuddlers! l For cats and rabbits, leave the pet carrier out at home so that they can go in and out as they please and not just associate it as a trip to the dreaded “V” word. l Handle your pet at home, almost like a veterinary check, so they are used to being examined i.e. stroke all over, feel their tummy, look at their teeth and inside the ears etc. l If your pet is very nervous, tell the receptionist when booking your appointment so we all know not to overwhelm them when they arrive. Also remind the vet at the beginning of your consultation.

l You are welcome to leave your pet in the car while you are waiting for your appointment or dealing with reception. That way they are not overwhelmed by a busy waiting room. l Try to keep cat/small animal carriers off of the floor and if possible sit away from dogs. You can even cover the carrier with a blanket so that they feel extra secure. Don’t forget, we can also offer a home visiting service so that your pet can be examined by the vet in the comfort of their own home. Also, make the most of all the free checks you are entitled to. Spending time with our veterinary nurses will help your pet get used to their surroundings and hopefully build a confident and happy relationship with “those in the uniforms”. Call Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 for more information or advice.

More than four vans filled with clothes, blankets and food have left Keynsham, bound for Calais where several thousand people are living in a migrant camp outside the French city. The items were all donated by local people who dropped off the goods at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church, in Bristol Road, which has been acting as a collection point for the Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol group over the past few weeks. The church’s parishioners have also raised more than £2,800 to go towards purchasing a UNHCR approved tent, which has insulation and a stove, and for three charities working on the ground in Calais to provide shelter, food and medical care – Doctors of the World, L’Auberge des Migrants and Association Salam. Parishioner Clarice Corfield,

one of the volunteers coordinating the collections at St Dunstan’s, said: “We saw on the news the situation in Calais and that people were suffering and not allowed to move. Out of compassion we thought we should be able to do something for them. “We heard about the group set up in Bristol and went to their meetings and Father Tibor volunteered for us to be a collection point. “The response has been absolutely amazing – we had a whole room full of clothes, blankets and food. People have been very generous, you feel they wanted to help and there is no prejudice.” With clothing, tents and more flooding in across Bristol, the collection points were temporarily closed at the end of September but people who wish

A bin installed by the town council was set alight and destroyed

Park equipment destroyed in vandalism spree Keynsham Memorial Park has been hit by a spate of vandalism in recent weeks while evidence of drug use has also been found. An arson attack on the weekend of Setember 12 and 13 destroyed a bin and an information board, while chairs from a nearby café and some temporary fencing were also thrown into the river. The town council, which installed both the bin and board near the Bandstand, is appealing for anyone with information about the incidents to email

townclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk. The children’s playground at the top of the park was the target on Friday, September 25, when vandals snapped a piece of play equipment off its springs. A bonfire was also discovered still burning the following morning in the skate park, which was dealt with by the council’s groundsman. Maintenance workers have also reported finding drug paraphernalia around the Bandstand on a regular basis. Keynsham policing team can be contacted on 101 with information.

Volunteers at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church with donations bound for Calais and Reverend Tibor Szende loading up a van to help are urged to keep an eye out for further appeals or donate money to the charities working in Calais. To highlight the thousands of lives being lost as refugees cross the Mediterranean to Europe, 2,500 paper cutouts of people were hung from threads inside

St John’s Church last month as a visual reminder of the crisis, before holding a vigil on September 27. Meanwhile, Keynsham Town Council has pledged to act as an information point for residents on local efforts to help refugees across Europe and has asked any

and has contacted national community action group Citizens UK to discuss the issue while it explores with the Government the level of help the region can provide. To find out more about Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol, visit the group’s page on Facebook.

The town’s entry was assessed by judges Terry Porter and Lesley Jelleyman, who toured the floral displays and community projects aimed at brightening up the local environment on July 10. Denise James, chair of Keynsham in Bloom Community Group, said: “I am absolutely delighted with our award, I would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work and dedication. Help to keep our land ‘green and pleasant’!

On Saturday, September 19, Transition Keynsham’s Wombles were once again out in force collecting litter along the banks of the river and canal, their surrounding meadows and parking areas. As always a large pile of filled bags was gathered for council collection and, as always, we were saddened by the few Keynsham residents/visitors who, lacking appreciation of our beautiful location, choose to despoil it. In particular, the far end of the new Bitton Road car park appears to have become a dumping ground – not just for the usual food, drink and cigarette detritus tossed from cars, but for neatly tied carrier bags full of what appeared to be domestic rubbish.

keynshamvoice

So, a big thank you to Darren, a young man enjoying this sunny spot with friends, who jumped out of his car and, with enthusiastic appreciation of his surroundings and deploring the mess, proceeded to collect up two full sacks! An approach has been made to the council about the replacement of the present old, uncovered and totally inadequate car park litter bin. So let’s hope for this – which alongside the support of Darren and his friends – will result in the whole area becoming “the green and pleasant land” that the vast majority of us want to see and enjoy. New clock tower does not live up to the hype

I was very, very disappointed when I saw the new clock this morning. It bears very little resemblance to the clock I voted for at the consultation and is too small to be of any significance and for it to be considered a landmark. I cannot see the purpose of these consultations if a committee then substantially changes the democratic decision without further consultation.

0117 256 5556

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

I realise that it may be necessary to make small alterations at the construction stage but the original square clock has become a dark blob which cannot be distinguished from the base. I very much doubt that it will be seen at the other end of the high street. What a disaster after all the hype! Gill Hellier

It’s finally arrived – and you’re responsible! September has seen the arrival at last of our new clock tower. This piece of public art, a long time in the making, is a cause for huge celebration as it is for the people of Keynsham, about the people of Keynsham and created by the immense contribution that the people of Keynsham have made to its creation. The scheme was enriched by the interest and engagement of residents of all ages; many hundreds took part in the selection of the artist chosen to undertake the project; they enthusiastically participated in workshops reminiscing about “the old days” and suggested innovative ways in which the personality and community spirit of Keynsham could be expressed. They sent in photographs and written material to illustrate the past heritage of the town and offered ideas to celebrate the present. Their contributions were supported by some extensive research undertaken by our local history society and civic society. People who had lived in Keynsham all their lives – with memories of the old market, the blacksmith at the top of Bath Hill, the old Lamb & Lark hotel, – helped bring alive a plethora of images for the artist, Sebastian Boyesen. He himself also undertook research to explore

October, 2015

our thriving past – of the wode gathered in our woods and used in our woollen mills, of the cooking pots, manufactured in our brass mills that found their way to Africa and back again in the different guise of figurines…. The influence of Fry’s Somerdale factory was recognised with the re-creation of the “Five Boys” chocolate advertisement – an idea that came out of the workshops and which called on our local schoolchildren to step up and be counted. The “Five Girls” advert was also created, both of which are now a proud part of the patchwork. The present wasn’t forgotten and, borrowing a little from The Beatles, the Music Festival and TimeOut Youth teams presented their version of “Sergeant Pepper”. So much has been woven into the story that is Keynsham. I feel so proud of having been part of this project. It brought home forcefully what an amazing community we have in our town. Congratulations to all those that played a part in creating this fantastic celebration of our heritage. Lisa O’Brien Chair, Arts Advisory Group Cllr Keynsham South

Why downsize leisure centre in growing town? What an incredible shame that the powers that be at B&NES have not felt the need for a proper consultation on proposals for the leisure centre other than simply the site it will occupy. This whole issue has caused more anger, confusion and upset than anything I have experienced in many years. councillors think it wise to provide a much smaller leisure centre than the one we have presently? Why, when we are significantly growing community would anyone think it sensible to lose the multi sports hall and squash courts with all of the community clubs and activities that take place there? This, coupled with the loss of spectator seating by the pool will mean that we can’t watch swimming galas for our schools, children and clubs. Anyone who has attended as a spectator will clearly understand the importance of cheering our children along and recognise the effect on our young swimmers having parents shouting encouragement. I read on social media the suggestion that councillors have partly based this “downsizing” on the fact that it has been used less in recent years. Perhaps, if this is true, they should have considered a little more on advertising and educating about fitness and a little less on outsourcing to privately commissioned companies to deliver our public services. We could then again

see the huge amount of use of 10 years ago prior to Aquaterra taking over. I remember having to book a badminton court two weeks in advance they were so popular. Can someone confirm that, as I suspect, it was indeed a good and solid profit-making leisure centre in those days? As the pitiful public consultation is due to close this coming week, I’d like assurances from our B&NES councillors that they will allow an extended period of consultation on the facilities for Keynsham residents and a full presentation dedicated solely to the leisure complex to properly ascertain what is required in terms of site and facilities. Concerns at loss of hall for sport Hundreds of residents attended a drop-in event to give their views on a raft of plans that will shape Keynsham for generations. The event brought together information on a number of proposals, from plans for the area’s road system to protection for its historic buildings, with the public invited to comment. Potential locations for a leisure centre to replace the Riverside venue were also put forward, sparking concern among many that the new facility would be smaller and wouldn’t include a sports hall. One resident who attended the event, Nick Norris, said: “Disappointingly there will be no facilities for badminton, squash, table tennis or any multicourt activities. The detail that was provided was limited and the explanation as to how it was concluded that Keynsham no longer deserved these sports facilities was vague.” A B&NES Council spokesperson said, however, that there would be more opportunity for

THE UPTON INN

people to comment on plans for the leisure centre and possible locations, which include its current site, Ashton Way and Hawkswell Field near Keynsham Rugby Club. He said: “We are still in the very early stages of the process to identify a site and no decision has been made on the location or the layout of the leisure centre. The drawings shown at the public consultation were indicative only and no detailed options for the layout will be drawn up until the site has been determined. Any proposed options would be subject to further public consultation including local clubs and leisure centre users.” Consultation on the leisure centre proposals so far and other parts of the Placemaking Plan, including the town’s Transport Strategy, is open until October 2. Consultation on the town’s conservation area runs until October 27 and on Keynsham and Saltford’s Air Quality Action Plan until December 8. Visit www. bathnes.gov.uk.

Power supply setback for skate park lights

Plans to install lighting at the skate park in Keynsham’s Memorial Park are facing another setback as there is no electricity supply to run them. Keynsham Town Council, which has agreed to pay for lighting from a funding pot of more than £36,000 handed over by developer Taylor Wimpey for youth services, heard at its last meeting that they would need to look into providing an external

power supply for the lights after Bath and North East Somerset Council informed them the existing supply to the tennis courts is at capacity. The authority had already received quotes from various lighting firms but heard at their September meeting that installing an external supply could cost in the region of £25,000 on top. Members have now voted to investigate alternative sources such as solar power.

Railway gets into spirit with a VE

A very special visitor was escorted by a parade of military vehicles from Keynsham to Avon Valley Railway as the attraction turned back the clock to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day with a weekend of 1940s-themed fun. Wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill was among the characters enjoying the fun at Bitton Station helping to recreate the street party spirit that marked the end of the Second World War. The Fry Club car park was once again used as a “park and ride” for the annual event, with visitors hopping on board vintage buses to be transported from Keynsham to Bitton. Among the bunting and flags of the Victory Tent on the platform, singer Miss Jayne Darling performed classic tunes from the period, while beauty salon She Unique brought more glamour to the occasion by offering 1940s-style makeovers. Alongside the attraction’s steam and diesel trains, which were busy taking passengers along the restored track to celebrate the role the railways played in the war effort, there were also displays of military and vintage vehicles, an exhibition on chocolate-making at Fry’s during the war and a chance to see the Fry’s Sentinel shunter locomotive, which was used at the factory and is undergoing restoration.

VIP guest Sir Winston Churchill Organisers said the turnout had been excellent over the two days on September 26 and 27, with many people coming dressed up for the day, and plans are already under way for next year’s event. What’s happening in October l Allotment project The October half term (October 22 to October 30) will see the last sessions at the allotment before the winter. We will be using the time over half term to put down wood edging around the beds, create a compost area, Bee Hotel and prepare an area for our herb garden. Young people have been cooking with the food grown at the allotment in TimeOut Youth Centre. The dishes have included courgette and cream soup and marrow and ginger jam. In addition, the young people have been growing pumpkins in preparation for Halloween.

l Stencilling and graffiti project (October 7) This project has been running through September and supports young people to understand the principles of stencilling. Within this session young people will be spray painting their designs onto canvas to be hung on the walls of TimeOut and also on T-shirts which they can take home with them. Sadly, despite hours invested into trying to secure tickets to Banksy’s Dismaland we were not lucky enough to get any. Dismal indeed! l Mental Health Awareness workshop (October 14) As part of Mental Health Awareness week, TimeOut will be running a workshop called “Are You Mental” which will explore the facts and stigmas relating to mental health. l Toxic Relationships workshop (October 21) This workshop explores the definitions of relationships and look at what makes a relationship healthy or toxic.

New projects

There are new activities starting in October. These include: l SENSE project TimeOut Youth Centre starts its SENSE project in October (Thursdays 7-8pm). This project will focus on young people’s well-being, exploring themes and activities relating to mind, body and spirit. l Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme With the end of the successful Bush Craft School, Keynsham Youth Service will be facilitating Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme working evenings (Tuesdays 7.30-9.30pm) for young people interested. If you

Jacob with the tarantula

A wild creature encounter for youth group by Ros Anstey Youngsters from 5 Villages Youth Group from Compton Dando enjoyed their last meet-up when Wendy Palmer from Edupet brought along a wide selection of animals for them to learn about in a hands-on session. The animals ranged from mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits, to a tarantula, two cornsnakes, a ball python, a hedgehog, an iguana, three bearded dragons and some giant snails, giant tortoises and giant centipedes. One of the club organisers, Alison ter Haar, said: “What a

collection. A great time was had by all and the group were very impressed by Wendy.” The next youth group date is Friday, October 2, when the children will enjoy their monthly tuck shop and activities. On Friday, November 2, they will be holding their tuck shop again and having a go at apple bobbing. The 5 Villages Youth Group is open to all children from Compton Dando, Chewton Keynsham, Queen Charlton, Woollard and Burnett and the tuck shop operates on the first Friday of every month at Compton Dando Village Hall.

Horses from Keynsham-based organisation Small Strides are helping people take big steps in their own lives away from the stableyard. Over the past year, people from many different walks of life have been attending sessions at a field between Keynsham and Queen Charlton learning how to care for the animals, read their behaviour and train them. But while the focus is, on one level, on gaining equinebased skills, the real lessons that laid-back gelding Blue and bossy lead mare JoJo teach their new helpers go much deeper. Small Strides, a community interest company, was launched last year by Jenny MacSharry and Amy Lewis to give people the chance to improve their wellbeing – both physical and mental – through working with horses. Jenny, who shares a background in care work as well as a love of horses with Amy, has welcomed people with learning difficulties, phobias, mental illness, those battling addiction, young carers, people with autism and more to their base, where they have seen the horses’ calming influence take real effect. She said: “There is a real therapeutic effect from being around animals – they aren’t judgemental, which is especially important for people with learning disabilities who might find they are isolated at school and in the community. “I have worked with people who haven’t even been out in the countryside before who have

benefited from the break away from city life.” Eighteen-year-old Joseph, who has a weekly work experience placement with Jenny, agrees, saying: “It makes me feel so relaxed, there is a therapeutic feel about the horses. Small Strides is the perfect place to learn proper horsemanship.” The aim of equine-assisted learning isn’t to get people into the saddle but to learn the essential groundwork such as leading, grooming and feeding, building confidence and incorporating skills people can apply to their lives away from Small Strides. There is no strict structure to the sessions as, Jenny explains, they are led by the client’s needs and aims – and sometimes by the mood of the horses! Amy, who is based in Wick with a third horse, a Shetland pony called Mitton, works mainly with children on outreach visits to schools, care homes and at community events, even incorporating maths and English into some of her sessions. The organisation hit the headlines recently when thieves targeted their site in Wick, stealing equipment including the horsebox used to take Mitton on his visits – a major setback as the pair were ready to begin promoting their sessions at schools and groups across the area. Supporters, however, rallied round and began donating and then Jenny received a phone call that she says left her speechless

teaching people how to challenges in their stride

Jenny MacSharry, left, and Amy Lewis, who set up Small Strides to offer equine-assisted learning – the offer of a replacement horse box from Jane and Vince Frankcom and Sally Masters, members of the public who had heard of their plight in the press. Jenny said: “It was overwhelming to be so devastated and then to see such kindness.” As well as helping their clients take big steps towards their goals, Jenny hopes to see Small Strides making progress too. In the next five years, she would like to have a herd of horses, farm animals and a vegetable plot up and running to help even more people take life’s challenges in their stride. GPs urge residents to get their flu jabs

GPs in Keynsham and Saltford are once again calling on everyone who is eligible for a flu jab to ensure they take the opportunity to get vaccinated as winter approaches. The doctors at Temple House, West View, St Augustine’s and Saltford surgeries are keen to keep the patient uptake rate high to prevent high incidence of flu in the community and protect vulnerable patients. They are therefore pleased to have the support of Keynshamvoice again this year to encourage all those entitled to a free vaccination to contact their own practice for clinic times, said a spokesperson. One GP said: “We have all seen at first-hand how dangerous and debilitating flu can be in vulnerable adults and would urge those qualifying for the vaccination to have it. “It is a simple, quick injection which can prevent serious, several-day illness.” Flu clinics are now under way and anyone who falls into the following groups can contact their Practice to get a vaccination: l People who are 65 years or over (or turn 65 by March 31, 2016) l Carers for someone elderly or disabled who could not cope if you were to be ill l Pregnant women l Anyone six months or older and in one or more of the following clinical risk groups because of chronic health problems: heart disease; respiratory disease; stroke/ TIA; liver disease; diabetes; immune-suppression – spleen dysfunction, no spleen, on chemotherapy, HIV. l Healthy children aged two, three and four years plus children in Years 1 and 2 are being offered immunisation by nasal spray. If you are unsure if you qualify for the flu vaccination, please call your GP practice to check.

Revamped Winter Festival to be a celebration of local community This year’s Winter Festival will be a “truly Keynsham evening”, say organisers, who are ringing the changes this November to encourage more members of the community to get involved. Popular story Peter Pan is the theme for this year’s festive event, which will take place on Friday, November 27, from 6-9pm. The evening will once again mark the start of the countdown to Christmas in Keynsham, with the festive lights switchon and the annual procession of local children and costumed characters taking place. One change will see the procession following a new route, leaving Charlton Road at 6.15pm to head along the High Street and into Temple Street where it will finish at a stage set up just before Carpenters Lane. There will be a variety of entertainment by local community groups on both the outdoor stage and inside in the Community Space, with the full line-up to be announced closer to the date. Around the town there will be street entertainers, competitions and activities in various locations. The fun fair is being scaled down and shops and local businesses are being encouraged to stay open and join in the activities while an increased number of stalls will be available for community groups. There will also be a Peter Pan-themed fancy dress competition on the night. A spokesperson for the Keynsham Winter Festival Planning committee said: “The committee is working towards making this an exciting

Entertainers at last year’s Keynsham Winter Festival – this year’s event has a Peter Pan-inspired theme community event that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. “We are striving to make this year’s Winter Festival more community focused rather than allow commercial stalls and attractions to take priority. Therefore, we have ordered more stalls and umbrellas so that community groups, local societies and school parent/ teacher associations can all take part. So bring out your Christmas cakes, sweets, cookies and more as well as floral art displays, Christmas gifts, decorations and whatever else you can think of to offer on the night. We need you to make this a truly ‘Keynsham’ evening.” Activities will also be taking place in the run-up to the

festival, including the annual children’s colouring competition and craft workshops and the businesses and traders window competition. The organisers’ spokesperson added: “The Winter Festival Committee would like to say a big thank you Churches Together, Tesco Stores, Waitrose, IJ McGill Transport, Keynsham Lions, Keynsham Rotary, Jazz PCs, Simply Carpets, Kit Co, Gregorys, The Entertainer, FDC Law, St Monica Trust and Barratt Homes, Coffee#1 and Reflections who have kindly made sponsorship donations and support in kind towards making this year’s event special.” Anyone who would like to offer sponsorship or support to the festival can contact

Kieran rises to challenge

A Keynsham bar manager who overcame depression has conquered another challenge to help others in their battle. Kieran Squire, an assistant manager at the town’s Bonzo Lounge, completed the Three Peaks Challenge last month, climbing Scafell Pike in Cumbria, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales to raise money for mental health charity Mind. Kieran said: “I wanted to give

something to a charity that works against mental illness and depression. The challenge itself was mentally draining. The physical training was tough. It included hill sprints and long cycles and runs but getting through it was the toughest mental challenge I have faced.” Kieran undertook the climbs with a group of fundraisers who all had their own reasons to support the cause but the gruel-

ling challenge brought them all together. He said: “Without them the peaks would have been impossible! After completing it, we all became good friends and all felt part of something worthwhile.” Kieran is delighted to have raised £600 for Mind so far and people can still donate online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/KieranSquire.

Resurfacing at park

A Keynsham play area is among several across Bath and North East Somerset that will be improved with a share of a £115,000 investment by the council. Chalfield Close play area will be resurfaced to improve safety for children, while several play areas in Bath will receive pieces of new play equipment as part of the scheme. Work on the parks will get under way this month and all projects are expected to be complete by the end of the year.

New homes on show A Keynsham development is another step closer to completion with the unveiling of more new showhomes. Prospective buyers will be taking their first look inside three different kinds of four-bedroom properties at Keynsham’s Meadows development, off Park Road, which was formerly known as K2B and where the developer is building 285 homes. Prices at the site range from £315,000 to £535,000.

A big hello to all readers of Keynshamvoice from the Keynsham Neighbourhood policing team. This is the time of year that I personally tend to dread as the nights draw in, the clocks go back an hour, the mornings get colder, making it less inviting to get up and the leaves start to fall off the trees. Shorts and T-shirts are replaced by coats and gloves and it won’t be long before we see Halloween masks and fireworks in our shop windows. From a policing point of view, this brings about its own set of challenges.

Halloween seems to have been hijacked over recent years by teenagers who think it appropriate to go out on an evening with eggs and flour and target all and sundry. This has led to scores of people not answering their doors on October 31 for fear of having their houses targeted. The tradition of playing “trick or treat” is an Americanism which has grown over the last 40 years and has seemed to replace the more traditional celebrations in this country such as “apple bobbing”. Trick or treating should be about young children dressing

up and seeing how many sweets they can accrue over an evening. Any anti-social behaviour with people taking things too far will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly by our team. Anything that is smeared over windows may be construed as criminal damage if it takes the householder time to clean off things like eggs and flour and again, the police will take the appropriate action if required to do so. Wishing you all a safe and happy start to the autumn months! Goodbye for now.

More volunteers are needed at Keynsham’s police centre to help vulnerable adults who have been detained understand the process. Under a scheme launched by Avon and Somerset PCC Sue Mountstevens and learning disability charity Brandon Trust, Appropriate Adults have supported people in 65 cases in Keynsham and at Patchway’s police centre since July. Sarah Cording from the charity said: “Our trained Appropriate Adult volunteers work with people who are vulnerable – people with learning disabilities, with mental illness or presenting a vulnerability. They work as an advocate for the person’s rights and are dedicated to making sure the person understands the process.” The team is appealing for more volunteers to join them – anyone over 18 can be an Appropriate Adult, training is provided and volunteers won’t need to give legal advice. Contact Alaina Duckett on 0117 934 1525 or alaina.duckett@brandontrust. org for more information.

Apple-picking project bears fruit but extra help needed for harvest A small team of volunteers is making the most of the apple harvest across Keynsham, picking hundreds of the fruits each week and delivering them to a local school. Members of Transition Keynsham have launched the Abundance Project in a bid to make sure the apples ripening on trees across the town don’t go to waste. Over the past few weeks, volunteers have been busy picking apples in back gardens across Keynsham after asking residents with surplus fruit to get in touch. So far, the group has been able to provide Chandag Junior School with a free apple for each pupil every week and has made a weekly delivery to Community@67 for its veg box scheme. With a grant from Keynsham Town Council, the group has been able to purchase pickers and an apple press to make juice – all that’s needed now is more volunteers, says Transition Keynsham member Liz Barling.

From left, Keynsham resident Marios Mitella and daughter Layla donate their surplus apples to Liz Barling and her helper Liam Prosser “We have got more trees than volunteers at the moment,” she said. “The aim is to not only to make sure the fruit doesn’t go to waste but also to keep food local, cutting down on food miles. In some instances the project is also helping to reduce social isola-

tion, particularly among elderly people – I’ve had lots of chats with people, they have given us recipes, histories of the trees and it makes them feel part of the community.” There will be a chance to find out more and try some of

the fruits of the group’s labour at Keynsham Food Festival on October 3 when they set up their apple press to make juice for visitors. The group hopes more volunteers will get involved and help harvest apples, allowing them to supply more schools and community groups. To get in touch, email lizbarling@gmx.com.

Wildlife survey to reveal health of local river

Wombles join beach clean-up from home! Keynsham may not be on the coast but that didn’t stop the Wombles, the town’s volunteer litter pickers, joining in the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean on September 19. Around 20 members got together to clean up the banks of the River Avon by the Lock Keeper pub, the nearby car park and roadsides. The aim was to help prevent rubbish entering local waterways

in a bid to stop it reaching the coast to help the MSC’s national campaign. The blitz proved successful with the volunteers collecting 25 sacks of rubbish, two deckchairs, a golf umbrella and even a deer’s skull complete with antlers. To find out more about the Keynsham Wombles’ activities, visit www.facebook.com/ KeynshamWombles or email womble@transitionkeynsham. org.

Keynsham’s waterways will be getting an annual health check-up next month, thanks to volunteers from the Keynsham branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust. Here, the group explains what their findings tell us about wildlife in the area and how you can get involved. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Avon Wildlife Trust/Wellsway School Green Team’s annual pollution survey of the river Chew at Dapp’s Hill Bridge. This survey, led by Dave Sage, chair of Keynsham’s local Avon Wildlife Trust group and Wellsway School teacher, involves people of all ages and abilities getting in the river and “kick sampling” in the stones and gravel to see what

invertebrate animals are found there. The range and types of these small animals are excellent indicators of the water quality in the river. In the early years, overflowing septic tanks occasionally polluted the river, as shown by blooms of blanket weed and sewage fungus. However, since mains sewerage systems were installed, water quality has steadily improved, with indicator species such as stonefly nymphs, mayfly nymphs and caddis fly larvae increasing in frequency. Further evidence is shown by plenty of fish, including carp, perch, rudd, roach and eels, providing plenty of food for top predators such as herons and kingfishers. Also passing through, feeding on these fish, are sure to be everincreasing otters, the topic of our

Jacob Rees-Mogg MP Recently Channel 4 News broadcast a short film where I showed Jess Phillips, the Labour Member of Parliament for Birmingham Yardley around North East Somerset. It was an interesting exercise enhanced by fabulous camerawork which showed the county in all its glory and ought to be borrowed by the local tourist board. From my point of view, it was an unusual experience. Usually when campaigning I want to hear people’s views and answer their questions rather than acting as an introducer but it was fascinating listening to Jess’s conversations. She has a natural and comfortable way of talking and clearly empathises with her interlocutors. At times this made me worry

People want to be allowed to get on with their own lives with governments or political parties helping them to achieve their goals

that I was helping the Labour Party too much but I hope her charm will have been forgotten by May 2020. However, it was the responses that were most interesting. The people we met were both friendly and forthright. The clear message was that people want to be allowed to get on with their own lives with governments or political parties helping them to achieve their

goals – in the jargon, aspiration. Any party that gets in the way will not succeed while the appeal of the politics of envy is not what it may once have been. It is a conundrum for all politicians that the most successful politician of the last 20 years, Tony Blair, fully understood what was needed to appeal to voters yet is the most distrusted and reviled figure in British politics today. The Labour Party is particularly scornful of the man who won three elections on the trot. Watching another, opposition party in action was intriguing and I was lucky to do it with a friendly and capable sparring partner. As always the good sense of the electorate shone through above all else.

Artist donates new pictures to library

An artist has donated six pictures to Keynsham Library to go on show to the public. Valentina Jarrett’s 3D artwork has been on display in the library’s exhibition space over the past few weeks, and now she has presented staff with examples to keep. The artwork includes pieces inspired by libraries and books, with quotes from famous people about libraries. The images were printed onto calligraphy rice paper and then torn out to make classic decoupage artwork, incorporating text and pictures. Several of the pictures were made with Valentina’s five-anda-half-year-old grandson and they are now on display in the children’s section of the library and will be hung in the exhibition space between shows. Valentina’s exhibition on the first floor of the library has also been extended until October 3. As well as creating her own pictures and exhibiting them, Valentina also runs the Academy of 3D Art Decoupage and Craft and teaches people her skills

around the world, with sessions coming up in Greece and Norway. To find out more about

Valentina’s work and 3D art, visit www.skills4you.org.uk. Valentina is pictured above left presenting the pictures to

Pair’s head shave is an emotional finale to team’s fundraising drive A six-week fundraising drive by staff at a Keynsham building society culminated in two members of the team having their heads shaved in support of their cause. Colleagues and customers at Coventry Building Society on the High Street have raised more than £2,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support with weekly cake sales and book sales in the runup to the sponsored haircut. Branch manager Charli Simcox and customer service assistant Amanda Payne volunteered to have their locks chopped in aid of the cause after a conversation about a TV drama at work. Charli explained the pair were inspired by actress Sheridan Smith’s performance in The C Word, which told the true story of Lisa Lynch’s battle with cancer. She said: “The programme really touched a nerve and I cried throughout and then when we were talking about it we got onto how brave Sheridan Smith was to have her hair shaved off and how

Charli Simcox and Amanda Payne are cheered on as they have their heads shaved for charity cancer touches everyone – then Amanda said, ‘Right, let’s do it.” With members of the team at Keynsham salon Bello Capelli offering their skills for free, the pair had their heads shaved in front of colleagues, customers and supporters at the High Street branch on September 2. Charli said: “Everyone has been really generous; we had so

many donations of cakes for our sales, Coventry Building Society matched £400 in donations and there was a really good turnout to watch us having our heads shaved. “Having my hair cut off was harder than I thought it would be, it was quite emotional but it was worth it. Now I keep forgetting I’ve had it cut off and there’s

such a feelgood factor from knowing we’ve raised so much money and awareness.” Charli added that Amanda’s hair, which was quite long, has been sent to the Little Princess Trust to make a wig for a young cancer patient. People can still donate to Macmillan Cancer Support by dropping into the Keynsham branch.

News in brief Artists’ show in aid of local hospice

A local art group is supporting Bath hospice Dorothy House by hosting a fundraising exhibition. Work by the members of Compton Dando Art Group will be on sale at the village hall on Saturday, October 24, from 10am until 4pm. Proceeds raised from cream teas and a raffle during the event will go to the hospice. The group welcomes guest artists throughout the year for

demonstrations and recently had visits from Frank Collitt, who paints in oils using a palette knife, and Linda Kettle, above, an artist who has worked on many TV and theatre productions.

keynshamvoice

At the end of October, Sonia Priest, who leads the Compton Dando Art Group, will be joining Bath artist Jenny Griffiths as they hold an exhibition of their paintings in Keynsham Library from Friday, October 30, until Friday, November 13. To find out more about the group, contact Mrs Priest on 01761 490551.

Volunteers needed for afternoon teas

Hosting one afternoon tea a month could change lives, says a group hoping to recruit more volunteers. Contact the Elderly’s Keynsham and Saltford group is hoping to get more people involved in its monthly Sunday afternoon get-togethers for people aged 75 and over who live alone. There are various roles, as the group explains: l Could you help with driving once a month (or less often as a reserve)? You will collect a couple of older people, in your own car, and take them to a

host’s home for tea, fun and companionship, where you will all enjoy the afternoon together l Hosting a tea party – welcoming the small group to tea in your own home just twice a year on a Sunday afternoon a year. You’ll need a downstairs loo and no more than three steps. l Coordinate the group – a little bit of organising each month to make sure the parties happen. Regional officer Helen KerBridges said: “It is a simple yet very effective idea, and it gives our older guests the knowledge that someone really cares. Most importantly it changes lives – maybe yours, too.” For more information, contact Helen on 01225 873812, email helen.ker@contact-the-elderly. org.uk or visit www.contact-theelderly.org.uk.

art exhibition to showcase the talents of its members. The Hive, based at Two Mile Hill Road in Kingswood, formerly Avon North Mencap, recently opened a new art studio to provide members with the opportunity to take part in art and pottery classes. The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Clare Campion-Smith, will be attending the event, which organisers hope will see people from across the area visiting the hub. Liz Cooke, CEO of the Hive, said: “The idea of this art exhibition is to make more people aware of the abilities of our members rather than focusing on their disabilities. We have found that art is a great way for people, especially those with communication difficulties, to express themselves and we also recognise the therapeutic benefits this provides.” The Hive Art Exhibition is taking place between 7pm and 10pm on October 13 at 322 Two Mile Hill Road. Norville Opticians

Beauty at Serendipity

A family owned company founded 100 years ago, Norville Opticians remains a leader in eye health. We offer our patients friendly, personal service using latest technology – some of which can produce a 3D image of the layers at the back of the eye and detect serious eye disorders even before the symptoms are noticed. Contact lenses are a convenient alternative to spectacles. We always use the latest designs and materials and our Optometrists are experts in fitting all types, including multifocal lenses. Many children come to us with reading problems which have gone undetected for many years, and affecting their education. A carefully and individually planned series of tests and treatment can often help with conditions such as visual stress dyslexia, ME and migraine. We can tell so much more from a visit to our opticians than simply whether you need spectacles. Visit Norville Opticians – clearly a better choice.

Hannah and Lauren have over 10 years of experience between them in the beauty industry. Both have worked in Keynsham in previous years and have always felt a natural pull to the area, admiring the welcoming community that it brings. In the Garden The first two weeks of September brought many changes to the weather. We had some very bright days, quite cold nights and, of course, less daylight. The hanging baskets took offence at the cold nights, and began to look a bit sparse. Contrarily, the roses continued their splendid progress and continued to grow taller and better than ever. The

On the Plot With autumn on its way the days are shortening and temperatures are falling. Seed sowing has stopped and cropping will soon end. Courgettes have all but finished and the pumpkins and squashes are ready for picking for storage. Make sure they are fully ripened by leaving them in the sun to achieve the best flavour. This year I grew calabrese (broccoli) and they are just about ready to pick. This leaves the vegetables that stand the winter still in need of attention. Winter cabbages, purple sprouting, sprouts, parsnips, swede and leeks will continue to mature over the

blooms kept coming and the scent was quite powerful. The shorter days persuaded some of the bedding plants to give up, but the purple and red Michaelmas daisies showed up very bravely and gave a good show to keep the border alive. The tomatoes in the hanging baskets filled up slowly, and due to some regular watering and sunshine are producing some good fruit. It has been suggested to pick them and ripen them indoors. We reached the middle of September and some rough weather arrived, high winds and heavy rain. The apples and pears tumbled from their trees, aided by the attentions of the jackdaws, now in permanent residence. Fortunately the weather improved and we had some bright days, but cold nights. I have looked back through my journal

and note that we had little rain, so the fruit is only filled at the top of the trees. That means some ladder work, very tiring. However, the fruit we have had has been tasty. I sometimes look in at the greengrocer’s to compare quality, and our fruit is somewhat less than that of the professionally-grown. With the warm, moist weather at the end of the month it is a good time to split perennials into smaller plants and use them to fill in any spaces in the borders. Any that do get moved, give them a spadeful of compost and remember to water regularly. Talking of compost, I have dug out the leaf mould from the pit and have spread it onto the main border. I was quite surprised how much was made, all from last year’s leaves. And now I start all over again.

I have trimmed one of the box hedges (some 30m long) and levelled the top, and it looks quite smart, with no sign of box blight, which seems to be rather prevalent at the moment. The hedge provides a useful protection to one border, although it is rather thirsty, which means I am continuously watering. Some 20 years ago a very heavy frost cut it to the ground. It seemed a disaster but within three years the hedge was re-established, and I have been cutting ever since. The lawn would appreciate some attention. Get the wire tined rake and shift all that thatch, spike it with a fork as much as you are able, spread some fine compost over it and brush it in. coming weeks so keep them clear of weeds to give them the best chance. October is the best month to sow Japanese onion sets, garlic and broad beans as the ground is still warm enough to start them into growth until winter sets in. Ensure you select an area that does not become waterlogged. The first to sow are the onion sets, which I buy loose so that I select healthy sets and the number I need. Plant them no less than four inches apart with 12 inches between the rows. Gently push the sets into prepared ground so that the tips are just visible. For garlic, sow them soon but certainly no later than the

shortest day and crop after the longest. I use bulbs supplied for planting. You can use shopbought but there is a risk of poor yield or disease and you have no idea as to the variety. Split the garlic into individual bulbs and use the same spacing as the onions but make a small hole first. Garlic need to be planted under the surface so that the tips are buried by about an inch. Broad beans can wait till last and choose a hardy variety – for example, Aquadulce. Make a shallow trench two inches deep and about four inches wide and scatter the seed evenly along it so that the spacing is approximately four inches to

avoid having to thin them later if the germination rate is good. Broad beans can grow quite tall so leave 24 inches between each trench. If needed, keep the area moist during the initial period until the shoots appear. After that I cover the young broad bean plants with a fleece tunnel to protect them over the winter period. At this time of year some people think that this is the end of the gardening season but I prefer to think it is the start of the next. Once this year’s crops have finished, clear the area, remove the weeds and dig as much as you can. Effort put in before winter sets in will pay huge dividends next year.

Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group We were fortunate to have good weather for our two themed walks in September. Firstly on September 6, a good turnout of walkers visited several of the gardens and allotments that were entered in the Keynsham In Bloom competition. We were treated to spectacular displays with entries at a very high standard. We were made very welcome by all the owners and we thank them for their hospitality. The second walk of the month was an historic walk around Keynsham. Another good turnout met at the new clock tower, where chair of the town council, Lisa O’Brien, gave us a talk on the origins and meanings of the clock. She then handed over to Richard Dyson, from Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, who led us on a very leisurely

walk around Keynsham, pointing out many of the historical points of interest to be seen. It was a thoroughly absorbing couple of hours and much enjoyed by all who took part. Our thanks must go to Richard and Lisa for giving up their Sunday to be our guides for the day. Next walks l Sunday, October 11 – meeting at 10am at the Memorial Park Cafe for a fivemile circular walk to Hanham along the River Avon, and back through the wood to Durley Lane. This has a difficulty rating of five as there is a steep flight of steps that are uneven and unprotected, and a section alongside an unfenced stream with a stony, uneven muddy

path adjacent. This one is for the experienced walker. l Sunday, November 1 – meeting at 10am at the bandstand in the Memorial Park. This is a far more friendly four-mile walk along the Two Tunnels walk in Bath. Return transport is provided - donations of £3 would be appreciated to cover costs. The walk is quite spectacular as we pass through the two long tunnels on the old Somerset and Dorset railway line. This walk has been completely refurbished with a Tarmac path the whole distance and lighting the whole length of the tunnels. There will be a refreshment stop at the Hope and Anchor pub, Midford, before we are picked up and taken home. Everyone welcome, including children – but, unfortunately, no dogs.

Now there’s a noticeable chill in the air, Bath and North East Somerset Council is offering residents free safety tests for their electric blankets. A testing session will be held at St John’s Church Hall, in Keynsham High Street, on Tuesday, October 27, from 11am to 4.30pm, where there will also be a range of stalls offering advice on keeping healthy, active and safe. Councillor Vic Pritchard, Cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “Last year, Bath & North East Somerset Council tested 177 electric blankets, of these 34 failed the test. “Electric blankets may often look safe but in fact pose a serious risk. We want people to be safe in their homes and I urge anyone who uses an electric blanket to get it tested using our free service.” Blanket testing sessions will also take place at Midsomer Norton and Larkhall in October. Annual general meeting The society’s AGM on September 21 was attended by over 50 members. Chairman Richard Dyson reported on a successful 50th anniversary year, with good attendances at the evening meetings leading to the move to new premises at St Dunstan’s. Work is continuing on the development of a set of History Walks leaflets to be published next spring and in gathering material for a new book to record the history of Keynsham and Saltford since World War II. He also paid tribute to all the work done for the society and in local historical research by Margaret Whitehead and Joan Day, who are retiring from the society’s committee after many years. Our Changing High Street After the formal meeting, Brian Vowles gave a talk on the changes to the west side of Keynsham’s High Street. Using the society’s extensive collection of historic images, he showed how

His picture of a flock of sheep being herded along the road showed how different life was before the car came to dominate our street scene! Brian’s talk was enlivened by his reminiscences of growing up in the town and of The Lamb & Lark, which was such a feature of the High Street until its much lamented demolition in 1970. Saltford Brass Mill Early in September members of the society enjoyed a guided tour around Saltford Brass Mill. Over the last few years the volunteers of the Brass Mill Project have done a great deal of work to restore further features of the manufacturing process; where the machinery has been lost they are building full-size replicas to give an

Only the noise of the hammers will be missing! Perhaps because it’s on our doorstep, it is easy to overlook this fascinating relic of industrial history, but everyone on the visit found the tour well worthwhile. local history. The meetings will be at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road. Visitors are always welcome and the first meeting, on Monday, October 19, in a change to that previously advertised, will be on The Floating Harbour. The speaker will be Peter Malpass, who has done a great deal of research on Bristol’s maritime history and is joint author of a book on the harbour. Symptoms of the flu include: l A high temperature of 38˚C or above l Tiredness l Weakness l Headache l Aches and pains l Chills l Nausea/vomiting l Sore throat l Cough l Runny nose l Sleeping problems l Loss of appetite The cold is caused by a different group of viruses to flu but can present with similar symptoms. The children are back to school, the nights are drawing in and there is a noticeable chill in the air…winter is on its way! Here at Chandag Road Pharmacy we have been busy getting ready for the winter season and are excited to announce our new in-store flu vaccination service. Whether you are entitled to a free flu jab from your GP surgery or have to pay privately, we can save you time and hassle by providing flu jabs in store. Just give us a call for more information or to book an appointment. We often have customers ask us what the difference between flu and the cold is, so this month we take a look at both. Flu is an unfortunately common viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes. In most cases it is self-limiting and clears up within a week but for patients who have underlying

Headache is one symptom of flu up and about and carry on with your normal activities it is more likely you have a cold rather than flu. Many people feel the need to consult their GP if they feel they have caught flu, however only certain groups of patients actually need to do so. If you are 65 or over, pregnant, suffer from a long-term medical condition, have a weakened immune system or develop chest pain, breathing difficulties or feel your symptoms are failing to

improve or are getting worse then it is important you contact your doctor. If you do catch either the flu or a cold you can help yourself feel better by drinking plenty of water, resting and keeping warm. If you develop a temperature or aches and pains, medicines like paracetamol or ibuprofen will help while a decongestant will help with any stuffy noses. Antibiotics won’t help with the flu or cold as neither is caused by bacteria. To reduce your risk of catching flu make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and regularly and clean surfaces such as door handles, desks, telephones etc regularly. An annual flu vaccine can also greatly reduce your risk of catching flu – it is best to receive a vaccine between September and November to ensure you are covered for the majority of the flu season.

Get active for heart campaign

Schools and youth groups across Keynsham, Saltford and beyond are being urged to get active and help raise money to install a defibrillator at Market Walk. The Heart in the Community Campaign is aiming to raise enough money over the next few weeks to install six of the life-saving devices outside Sainsbury’s supermarkets across Bath and North East Somerset. B&NES Council has teamed up with the retail giant and the Community Heartbeat Trust to launch the fundraising drive, in which youngsters are being encouraged to take part in sponsored activities. Councillor Tim Warren, leader of the council, said: “Placing portable defibrillators in places where people gather enables

immediate treatment to be given in an emergency situation. “Defibrillators save lives and the council is pleased to be working alongside Sainsbury’s and the Community Heartbeat Trust in this important campaign.” Shoppers can donate at the Keynsham store and schools and youth groups, which have been sent information packs, will be in with a chance of winning £100 of Sainsbury’s vouchers for the fundraisers who collect the most. Each defibrillator costs £1,700 and, in an emergency where someone has suffered a cardiac arrest, can be used by members of the public with guidance from the South West Ambulance Service by calling 999.

Hundreds of cuppas raise £1,000 for church by Ros Anstey Once again the opening of Compton Dando’s village church for afternoon teas during the summer proved popular with walkers, people passing by and locals popping in and enjoying a variety of homemade cakes and endless cups of tea. Also popular was this year’s added attraction of a pop-up museum, which proved to be a talking point at the Sunday events. One of the organisers, Alison ter Haar, said: “Visitors and villagers alike were keen to see the variety of interesting items

on display. They included a hand-painted goose egg, vases made from bomb shell cases, a moustache mug, and a seasmoothed selection of glass from Combe Martin.” Jenny Davis, another of the event team, said: “We were thrilled with the popularity of our teas, which raised well over £1,000 for the church with nearly 500 teas sold!” For the past four years members of St Mary’s Church have been opening it every Sunday afternoon from May until the end of August, and serving tea and cake.

Thought for the Month with Rev Tibor Szende of St Dunstan’s Catholic Church, Keynsham On September 14, we celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The cross is the universal symbol of Christianity. It is a pleasing geometrical shape, which is worn as jewellery even by people who are not religious. In the middle of August we had another feast, the martyrdom of St Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish priest who died in the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz. He volunteered to be executed instead of another man who was the father of many children, whereas Maximilian was a single man. He was killed by a lethal injection. Had Jesus been executed by the same method, or by beheading or hanging, we would never have had this

symbol, the cross; but because the Romans used crucifixion, we have it. God can make good use of the most gruesome detail. The cross is the symbol of self-sacrifice, the laying down of one’s life to save someone else. It is at the far end of the scale on which we can measure things done for other people. In today’s world most of us need to do more for others until we are all concerned for each other’s welfare, in the family, the village, the country and in the world. It is the only way forward if we want to live without fear, mistrust, violence and war. So let’s look upon the cross not as the symbol of religious rules and regulations but as the symbol of love of all people.

Charity launches new singalong sessions A charity that helps older people beat isolation through song is expanding in Keynsham. Goldies, which offers nearly 100 regular daytime singing sessions across southern England and Wales, has launched a new group in Keynsham at the Key Centre in Charlton Road. The new session will take place on the last Friday of every month from 2-3pm, led by Jacqui Cook, and is in addition to the group that meets on the second Friday of every month at The Hawthorns Community

Room in Carpenters Lane from 10.30-11.30am. The charity was launched seven years ago and gives people the chance to sing along to songs from the Fifties onwards. Grenville Jones, Goldies founder said: “People call us the sing and smile charity and we know that for many older people, attending their Goldies session is one of the few times that they are with others. Sadly, loneliness and isolation is a growing concern in society.” Visit www.golden-oldies.org. uk for more information.

l The Secret Life of Fighter Command – Sinclair McKay As the commemorations for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain continues, here is a book that outlines the pivotal role the men and women of Fighter Command, dotted around the country played during the conflict. It looks at the groundbreaking role of radar along the coast, the spotters of bombing waves, the Wrens who plotted enemy movements and the new technology, including guidance systems and the planes themselves, like the iconic Spitfire. Sinclair McKay has gained exclusive interviews with former pilots and ground staff to produce a vivid picture of life during this turbulent time. Why not visit the History section in the library to explore more of this period?

l Mr Mercedes by Stephen King From the pen of the King of Horror comes a riveting cat-and-mouse thriller. Retired homicide detective Bill Hodges is still haunted by one unsolved case, when on a dawn day, a long line of unemployed people waiting for a spot at a job fair were mercilessly run down by a stolen Mercedes. The killer escaped but left eight people dead. Months later Det.Ret Hodges is taunted by mail from a man claiming to be the perpetrator; this awakens in him a passion for investigating one more time. Along with a couple of misfit friends, Hodges realises he must apprehend the killer before Mr Mercedes strikes again. Stephen King has created a real fast-paced thriller. A race against time with great characters especially in the retired, overweight cop Bill Hodges and a truly creepy and seemingly unremarkable villain.

The newcomers are strong, tough and mean, with an obvious grudge against Tory and her team. It is the heroine Tory and her pack that try to reason with the Trinity, while being tracked by a shadowy government agency. This is a great read if you are an avid reader of Kathy Reichs like I am! Lemongrass and crab risotto with pan-fried seabass

E

R

October, 2015

Ingredients 1.2 litres chicken stock 4 kaffir lime leaves, finely shredded 175g butter 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 banana shallots, finely chopped 2 lemongrass stalks, finely chopped 2 red chillies, finely chopped 1 tbsp Thai green curry paste 350g arborio rice 100ml white wine 500g crabmeat 2 large sea bass fillets, scaled, cut in half and scored three times 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 limes Chopped fresh coriander Knob of butter Ground salt and black pepper Pea shoots

with Daniel Hayward, head chef and co-owner of Hayward’s Kitchen at Saltford Golf Club

Method Place the chicken stock and kaffir lime leaves into a saucepan and bring to a simmer. In a heavy bottom saucepan, melt the butter and add the garlic, shallots, lemongrass, chillies and fry for one minute. Stir in the curry paste and cook until fragrant, about one minute. Add the rice, then the wine and stir. With the hot chicken stock, add a ladleful to the rice and stir until the rice has absorbed all the

liquid. Continue adding the stock, a little at a time, until all the stock has been absorbed. Keep stirring until the risotto has a creamy consistency. This should take around 15 minutes. While the risotto is cooking, heat a frying pan and add rapeseed oil. When the pan is smoking, add your sea bass fillets skin-side down, season with salt and pepper and turn the heat down to medium-hot. After about four minutes when the skin is crispy, flip over, season

again and cook for a further 1-2 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish. Squeeze half a lime over the fish, turn the heat off and take the pan off the heat. Once the rice is cooked and the sea bass is resting in the pan, add a knob of butter, all the crabmeat, the juice of a whole lime and chopped coriander to the risotto. Season the risotto with salt and ground black pepper. To assemble, spoon the risotto equally into four bowls (the risotto should “relax” onto the plate, it should not be too stiff or too runny). Place the sea bass fillet on top of the risotto and decorate with pea shoots. l Hayward’s can also cater at your choice of venue, at home or at your business premises. Pen to Paper with Keynsham Creative Writers New Life Comfort me for a moment or two Rest with me for a while Lay your head deep in my chest While I gaze upon your smile Let the softness of your tender skin Press against my heart Feel the warmth you radiate Of me, you are a part Such delicate and fragile form So innocent and so young Eyes that stare a beautiful stare A new life, just begun Such tiny hands and tiny feet A cute and shrivelled nose As I nestle close protecting you Before the moment goes Soft wisps of golden curly hair

Smiles that are bound to captivate We wish for you so many things This miracle, ourselves congratulate The creation of two people’s love Has our hearts in such a whirl The hope and joy you bring us both You are our little girl John Howlett

Business of the month

63

For October, we meet Doug Douglas, managing director of Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park Tell us about your company. Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park has been in the Douglas family since 1976 when John Douglas purchased the farm that stretched across 200 acres. Previously it had been a mixed dairy, beef, pig and corn farm run by the West family. The original farm dates back to the 15th century, when the local people from the small town of Keynsham used to graze their cattle and sheep beyond the safety of the city walls on the lush land adjacent to the river. One of the herders took a chance on building a small house on a spot where his cattle most liked to graze and so the first proper farm in the area was established. In 1978 Mr Douglas developed a fruit enterprise on the farm, which ended up being the largest self-pick fruit farm in the West Country. The fruit farm was closed in 2003 to allow for the growth of the adventure and wildlife side of the park. In 1987, with his business partner Jack Jenkins, Mr Douglas turned the lower fields, parallel to the River Avon, into the Avon Valley Country Park, now Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park. Their vision? To make nature more accessible to the city dwellers of Bath, Bristol and beyond. In April 2014, John’s son Doug, who served for 10 years in the 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh, decided to leave the army to take over the park. He married Hannah in 2012 on the farm and they had their first child, Honor, in June 2014. Employing locally-based staff with a passion and enthusiasm for British animals and wildlife, the original vision for nature has been the driving force behind the park since it began and now, with the next generation of the Douglas family at the helm, the park is looking to the future and the development of this vision. What service do you provide to the people of Keynsham? Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park provides visitors with a fantastic value day out experience, meeting and greeting British animals and wildlife throughout the park, with hands-

Doug Douglas, front centre, and assistant manager Hayley Fey, front second from right, with the team wide range of interactive and hands-on activities, with indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, miniature train, and indoor animal interactive barn to name just a few of the activities. There’s always something new being planned with the introduction of Segway tours, paddle boarding on the River Avon and even Battle Archery.

John, Doug and Honor Douglas with Lola the goat on activities running throughout the day. There is always something new and different to explore, meeting Felix and Rusty, the foxes, or maybe Thelma and Louise, the rare black pigs, or even Lola, the park’s oldest goat! With the park now open throughout the year, autumn and winter sees some exciting events coming to Avon Valley, for all ages. There’s Spooky Fun for the younger visitors through half term, FEAR at Avon Valley returning for its second year on selected dates in October (bigger and scarier than before this is aimed at an older audience with a 12A certificate), Bonfire Night and Firework display on Friday, November 6, and the ultimate Christmas experience with Living Nativity starting on Saturday,

November 28, until Christmas Eve, too. What is the best part of running your business and working in Keynsham? Providing local residents with 90 acres of wide open space, full of nature, wildlife and adventure throughout the year is something Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park prides itself on. Keynsham is a thriving town, and Avon Valley enjoys being a part of that, providing local people with an educational and fun day out. What makes your service different from other companies? Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park is the only place in the area that offers such a

What are your plans for the future of the business? The vision is to continue developing the park to bring British animals and wildlife to Keynsham. Giving visitors a chance to learn about nature and wildlife that inhabits Britain. New to the farm this year is the undercover animal barn, where a selection of British animals are on hand to meet and greet, including rare black pigs, chipmunks and miniature donkeys among others. The park is looking to introduce a breeding pair of hand-reared European otters in spring, with a view to increasing our British wildlife stock over the coming years. Third consecutive bonus point win for table-topping Keynsham Rugby

Match report by Rob Breckon Despite having made five enforced changes to the previous week’s squad, Keynsham showed their collective spirit with a gritty bonus point win at home, overcoming Chosen Hill Former Pupils 27-10. Despite the season still being in its infancy, Keynsham’s pack has demonstrated its ascendancy in every contest so far, and the clash on September 26 with the Gloucestershire-based opponents was no different. Both side welcomed early phases of possession but it was the home side who looked the most dangerous, the backs playing with pace and guile in combination with forwards’ coordination and power. With 12 minutes played, Keynsham gained the upper hand in the set piece resulting in a scrum penalty on Chosen Hill’s 10 metre line. With the oppostion half asleep, Keynsham’s ever aware scrum half John Pearce took the quick tap penalty and zipped though the unprepared defensive line. Winger Chris Bakker was also on Pearce’s wave length and following some good footwork from Pearce, he was able to find Bakker and release him into the corner to score the game’s first try. 5-0. However, Chosen Hill responded well, albeit against the flow of play. As the home team looked to be making the most of Crown Fields’ wide pitch, the visitors’ centre intercepted the ball and following some good handling Chosen Hill’s second row showing fended off the scrambling defenders and touched down in the far corner timing the scores. The remainder of the first half ebbed and flowed with Keynsham looking the more dangerous of the two sides but Chosen Hill’s defence remained resilient. However, pressure at the breakdown allowed Keynsham fly half Joe Davies to slot a deserved penalty – 8-5. An injury to one oft Chosen Hill’s players which required an ambulance forced a short pause in the fixture as the game was moved to the neighbouring pitch. Keynsham Rugby Club wish the

Keynsham Rugby in action in their 10-12 win away to Burnham on Sea last month injured player a speedy and full recovery. Half time 8-5. The visitors started the stronger as the second 40 began, earning themselves a penalty only for the conversion attempt to just drift wide. However, Chosen Hill’s half time talk seemed to have motivated them to step up their game and Keynsham’s defence was put under the spotlight during the third quarter, which scrambled well and prevented the visitors from crossing the whitewash. As the game entered the final quarter, Keynsham’s forwards were dominating nearly every set piece and earning numerous penalties providing the home side with good attacking field position. As Keynsham’s back and forwards showed good interplay, Chosen Hill infringed offside. With the referee having called advantage, the home side shipped the ball along the line and following some slick hands from back row Ben Newman, fellow back row Hayden Johnson showed good strength to force his way over in the corner. 13-5. Chosen Hill’s woes continued shortly after when they went a man down following a swinging arm. With the man advantage in the pack, Keynsham capitalised by turning the screw with a number of powerful scrums on the

visitors’ five metre line. With the referee’s patience wearing thin and Chosen Hill’s pack continually folding under the pressure, the penalty try was awarded taking Keynsham’s lead to 20-5. As the game looked to be in its last five minutes, Keynsham went hunting for the sought-after bonus point try and got it, with an unsurprisingly dominant scrum allowing Ben Newman to dot down in the corner following some good ball control at the base of the scrum. Davies slotted the conversion from the touch line. 27-5. Chosen Hill, however, did have the final say with a deserved try in the last play of the game following some good hands in the

backs straight from the restart. Stand-in captain Phil Harvey said: “I’m delighted we got the win today. Chosen Hill are a difficult team to play against but I thought our dominance up front really allowed us to get a foot hold over any momentum they were trying to gain. “Considering the number of changes we have had to make in the squad, to secure our third consecutive bonus says a lot about the commitment and resilience of our squad.” In previous fixtures this season, Keynsham have achieved a 10-12 win away to Burnham on Sea, 17-24 away to Stroud and a home win against Old Bristolians, 31-12.

Bowls season rolls to close as club marks Finals Day and last games Another season draws to a close at Keynsham Bowling Club, writes our correspondent, and while some members will be packing away their woods until April 2016, others will continue to play indoors. The last Sunday in August saw the Annual Finals Day when 15 trophies were up for grabs. These were won by a mixture of long-established and relatively new bowlers. The Ladies’ and Men’s championships were won by Mary Naish and Pete Filliter and our photograph shows them receiving their trophies from the club president John Mead. Sadly, one face was missing on Finals Day, that of the vice president Hazel Waldon, who had recently passed away – she will be greatly missed. Finals Day was well attended and members and players enjoyed a cream tea and glass of prosecco. During September there were a series of friendly fixtures,

Mary Naish and Pete Fillter receive their Finals Day trophies from Keynsham Bowling Club president John Mead ladies, men and mixed. The club also hosted its final County game of the season when the President’s Ladies played the President’s Men. At the time of writing there is just one more day of bowling left at Keynsham when more than 50 members will bowl in

the final roll up, with the evening concluding with a fish and chip supper. This will include a number of new members who have joined the club this year. The club has invested in a heating system in the clubhouse, which will result in social events being held in the winter months.

When so many bowling clubs are struggling a little membershipwise, Keynsham is thriving both on and off the green. We look forward to socialising during the closed seasons and then donning our bowling shoes in April 2016 and getting back out on to the green.

Frame Football is on offer at Somerdale Pavilion

Youngsters have a ball with Frame Football A new version of football is allowing those who use walking frames to get out onto the pitch at the Somerdale Pavilion. In a first for the Bristol and Bath area, Frame Football has been launched at the Keynsham grounds for children and adults with a range of disabilities. The first session was held in September and will now run every Saturday on a pay-as-youplay basis, organised by Nick Dewfall, founder of Inclusive Sport, and supported by health and leisure charity Aquaterra,

which manages the Somerdale Pavilion. Nick said: “Opening in Keynsham has been a great success. It is amazing to see the look of joy on the faces of the children. There is no pressure or expectation, just happiness at being able to play the game they love.” He added: “Typically the players have cerebral palsy but basically Frame Football is for any child with a mobility issue who uses a frame or sticks to walk.” To find out more or book a place, email Nick at nickdewfall @aol.com.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field Keynsham Town’s First XI hit a rich vein of form in midSeptember, with three successive victories propelling them to sixth place in the Toolstation Western League Division One. The month started with the Ks coming from two goals behind twice in the space of four days to earn two draws. Their first ever visit to newly promoted Chipping Sodbury Town saw two excellent strikes from outside the box by Aaron Childs and Ben Harris earn a 2-2 draw. Then in a thrilling encounter with high-flying Wells City, two goals in the last three minutes by Kieran Adams and Joe Baker turned a 3-1 deficit into a point. The Ks could not manage the same feat a week later, however, slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Radstock Town, with Kieran Adams again on the scoresheet. The Ks then earned an excellent 2-0 away victory at Chard Town. With a dozen players missing through injury, suspension and availability, they took a very youthful side to Chard, with six of the 12 who played having been part of the club’s Under 18 squad last season. Teenagers Sam Kipling and Harry Ollis both made their full first team debuts. Keynsham rode their luck early on but then 18-year-old Jamie Noble started causing Chard’s defence all kinds of problems. A Sam Duggan cracker from the edge of the box put the Ks in front on the half hour and then right on the stroke of half-time, Noble outpaced the last defender before rounding the keeper and putting it into the empty net for his first senior goal. The second half wasn’t too pretty as Keynsham took the sting out of the game, but apart from a top drawer save from Ashley Wintle, the home side rarely threatened. The following Tuesday saw league leaders Corsham Town visit the AJN Stadium and a thrilling match saw the Ks run out 3-2 winners. Brothers Kieran and Jason Adams both netted, as well as a fine run and finish from substitute Aaron Childs in the 78th minute to clinch victory.

Then on a Friday night, a bumper crowd of 91 saw Keynsham demolish local rivals Ashton & Backwell United 4-1, with goals from Ben Harris, Kieran Adams, Sam Duggan and Bertrand Abang. Harris set them on their way with a direct freekick from 25 yards which went in off the bar. Adams slotted home a fine through ball five minutes later and when Duggan cut into the box from the touchline in first half injury time and unleashed a scorcher into the roof of the net, the Ks were flying. Abang’s first goal for the club midway through the second half sealed a fine evening for the Ks. This represents the Ks’ best start to a season for several years and club secretary Julian French said: ”After a few years where we have struggled, it is refreshing to see us competing against the top teams in our league, the majority of whom have the financial backing to pay their players. That is something that we cannot do at Keynsham, but we rely on a bunch of extremely committed lads and an excellent team spirit engendered by the management team of Chris King, Sean Day and Russ Holt.” Manager Chris King, who has now been in charge of First Team affairs for just over a year, said: “We find ourselves in a healthy

position in the league after three successive wins, but as always we have to take each game as it comes and not raise our expectations too high. However, with confidence high, I am expecting us to keep the momentum going during October and hopefully progress in all competitions. The management team and players really appreciate the support we are now getting at home, with the lads commenting on the atmosphere and how loud it is getting at the AJN. Success breeds success and hopefully the increased attendances we have been seeing will continue as the club looks to move forward.” October sees some cup football at the AJN Stadium, with a high-profile evening game in the inaugural Western League Ground Hop Weekend, during which we entertain Westbury United on Saturday, October 17 (7.45pm kick-off). This weekend has seven Western League fixtures over three days, with four consecutive games on the Saturday, and sees non-league football fans from all over the UK visiting the West Country. Keynsham’s Saturday evening kick-off should attract a large crowd and a hog roast will be on offer as well as the usual array of refreshments. Full First Team home fixtures for the month are as follows:

l Saturday, October 3 Wells City (FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round) 3pm kick-off l Saturday 10th October Chippenham Park (Les Phillips Cup Preliminary Round) 3pm kick-off l Saturday, October 17 Westbury United (Toolstation Western League) 3pm kick-off l Saturday, October 24 Calne Town (Toolstation Western League) 3pm kick-off Keynsham Town’s Reserves have started the season well, sitting in fifth place in the Somerset County League Division One East with three wins and a defeat from their first four games. The “A” Team have started their Bristol and Suburban League campaign with a win and a defeat, while the Under 18s won their opening Somerset Floodlit Youth League North Division game 1-0 away to Bitton. There is still an opportunity for individuals or companies to pick their favourite Keynsham Town player and get some great benefits through a season-long sponsorship for a one-off payment of £25. Player sponsorship packages are now available to show your support for your favourite Ks star. The sponsorship runs throughout the 2015/16 season, and includes your name and/or business name appearing alongside the player profile in the matchday programme, confirmation of your sponsorship on the official club website (http://keynshamtownfc.net) and the chance to attend the Sponsors’ Evening at the end of the season. There are also several other sponsorship packages available throughout the season. If you are interested, contact Julian French at jules1233@live.com or on 07814 609853.
