Artist Sebastien Boyesen with his original clock tower design that won residents’ votes – it’s almost time to see the finished version

It’s time to take wraps off town’s new clocktower It’s almost time… in just a couple of weeks, Keynsham’s new clocktower will be unveiled in the town centre. More than two and a half years since the landmark tower and meeting point was removed, people are once again being invited to “meet at the clocktower”. A brand new structure by artist Sebastien Boyesen will be unveiled at the square in front of the town’s library at noon on Saturday, September 19. Eight-year-old Katie Watkins will get to reveal the tower to the crowds as part of the ceremony after her name was drawn in a

competition for schoolchildren across the town. Councillor Lisa O’Brien, chair of Keynsham Arts Advisory Group, said: “The Keynsham Arts Advisory Group is so proud of the new clocktower. It’s a fantastic way of celebrating the vitality of modern Keynsham and the heritage on which the town was built. “As a B&NES councillor representing a Keynsham ward, I’m truly delighted to have this special landmark for the town.” The event will also be accompanied by music from Keynsham Brass Band and an exhibition.

Leisure charity takes up reins at new venue the Somerdale Pavilion The keys to the new venue built to replace the long-established Fry Club and Conference Centre have been handed to leisure charity Aquaterra. Now named the Somerdale Pavilion, the handover at the sports and entertainment venue took place last month between Aquaterra, developer Taylor Wimpey and Mondelez International, the owner of the Cadbury brand. Aquaterra, which formerly ran Keynsham Leisure Centre, will manage the operations and staffing at the centre to cover 15 sports fields for football, cricket, a nine-hole golf course, bowls, netball, tennis, skittles and a range of function rooms, which can be used for events from weddings and birthday parties to conferences and seminars. The charity is also planning to provide a range of new activities and exercise classes for all ages, including Nordic walking, community days, sport performance sessions, children’s

From left: Adrian Slade, project director, Taylor Wimpey; Kevin Thatcher, Fry Club chairman; and Antony Kildare, chief executive, Aquaterra Leisure parties and family fun days as well as a health programme. Antony Kildare, CEO of Aquaterra said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to build on our history of working in the community of Bath and Bristol, this time in partnership with Mondelez International. “Aquaterra is a not-for-profit organisation, with a big heart to bring to every individual – regardless of their age,

background or abilities – an opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing through sport, entertainment and leisure. “Our surplus is reinvested to help us to deliver activities and programmes that will meet the needs of the local community via the Keynsham Community Fund.” Tony Bilsborough at Mondelez International said: “We’re very pleased to appoint Aquaterra. Our primary objective

has always been to create a lasting legacy for the local community and we believe that, through the new facilities on site and our partnership with Aquaterra, this will be achieved. “Aquaterra’s bid for the tender showed an understanding of local needs. We were impressed with their depth of experience in producing inspiring sports programmes and activities that succeeded in bringing the community together.”

Anger as new homes on ‘haven’ get the go-ahead A decision to allow an open space on a residential street in Keynsham to be turned into housing has been met with anger. Keynsham Town Council’s planning committee initially supported an application to create two semi-detached houses on land between 86 and 88 Hurn Lane – a decision made in May before they had been made aware of a number of objections to the scheme sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council. Residents attended the twon council’s planning committee meeting on August 3 to raise concerns at the decision to support the proposal, and members agreed to withdraw their backing at the following full council meeting on August 18. They have been accused of “shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted”, however, as the plans were passed by B&NES Council’s planning team at the end of July. Andy Wait, one of nine objec-

tors to the scheme, described the site as a haven for both residents and wildlife and said: “Did they [councillors] not appreciate or understand the importance of the amenity and recreation space on the estate?” An application to “call in” the scheme by Keynsham councillor Bryan Organ to give B&NES’ planners and residents the chance to discuss the proposal before a decision was made was unsuccessful. Mr Wait said: “I am appalled

that none of the local objectors had any opportunity to express their concerns at a council meeting before the decision was made and that none of their objections have ever appeared on the B&NES website.” Residents’ only option now if they wanted to fight the decision, he said, would be to mount a costly judicial review process. Keynsham town councillors have voted to give their backing to any application to gain protected green space status for the site and said that their planning committee’s original decision to support the development scheme was based on the information available at the time. The piece of land on Hurn Lane was initially designated a play area when the estate was constructed in the 1970s. It had been maintained by Keynsham Town Council until ownership reverted back to the developer last year. l See Letters, Page 10

Lay-by to go ahead after four-year wait laybylksldkls

Neighbours on a busy Keynsham road will finally see a lay-by installed outside their homes after a four-year wait. Families living in four houses on Charlton Road have had to get in and out of their cars with traffic passing close by them without a full-width lay-by to park in. Lobbying on their behalf by Keynsham councillor Alan Hale led to talks with Barratt Homes, which is carrying out other work on Charlton Road. Mr Hale said: “Barratt Homes managers were contacted and after consideration they have agreed to fund the cost of installing the new lay-by – thereby making life a little easier and safer for the families involved.” David Millin of Barratt Homes added: “We were approached with what seemed a very sensible suggestion linked to the construction of a shared way for pedestrians and cyclists and we are pleased that we are going to be able to provide a safer environment for families just down the road from our new development.”

Views sought on town’s future at drop-in session

How to care for an older cat Cats now live to an average age of between 15 and 20 years old. Because of this gradually extending lifespan, we are seeing more and more agerelated problems in cats, just like you would in people. Many of these problems can be properly managed if caught early enough, providing your old friend with a few more comfortable “retirement” years. Some of the more common conditions found in older cats can include: hyperthyroidism, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, kidney disease and dental disease. They may also be prone to lumps and bumps, which could be a sign of cancer. When cats reach the age of eight years or older, it is recommended that they have a routine health check every six months. That way we can check that they are keeping to a reasonable weight and aren't showing any signs of the above conditions, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst or unexplained weight loss. You may want to consider that your cat has a blood and/or urine test as well, just to check that

With plans being drawn up to determine everything from Keynsham’s future road system to the location of the town’s leisure centre, residents are being invited to have their say at a drop-in event this month. Bath & North East Somerset Council wants to hear the community’s views on a wide range of proposals that will shape the town over coming years. The documents being drawn up will all form part of the council’s Placemaking Plan, which will detail where developments will take place and protect community assets. The drop-in event on Tuesday, September 15, will include exhibitions and information on: l Key principles and recommendations within the draft Keynsham Transport Strategy.

l Possible locations for a new leisure centre in Keynsham. GLL, the new organisation responsible for leisure facilities in the town, will be present to talk through proposals. l Site proposal for employment land to the east of the town, between Keynsham and Saltford. l Draft Keynsham Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan. l Draft Keynsham and Saltford Air Quality Action Plan. Proposals included in the Keynsham Transport Strategy include trialling a one-way system in the High Street, an overhaul of the busy Hick’s Gate roundabout and revamps of some of the town’s most well-used junctions. Meanwhile, the Conservation Area Appraisal proposes that the conservation area – which covers parts of the town centre

We also recommend changing their food to a senior cat diet to ensure they receive the correct nutrients for that stage of their life. Their claws can also become thicker and longer with age and will need to be clipped on a regular basis. A local pub that hosts a monthly fundraising quiz has split £3,000 between five charities. The Compton Inn has been holding the quizzes for a number of years, raising more than £11,000 in total and donating it to good causes as the cash accumulates. With £3,000 recently collected from entrance fees and profits from the raffle, quiz teams were asked to nominate charities to receive a share. Greyhound Rescue West of

England, Headway Bath and District, It’s In The Bag, Julian House and the RUH Forever Friends Appeal have each received £600. Paul Thomas, landlord of The Compton Inn, said: “My team and I are proud to be able to contribute to our local charities through the monthly quiz. Everyone who attends the quiz is delighted to be a part of this and I look forward to supporting many more charities in years to come.”

Equine charity’s appeal for help after thieves take valuable trailer

PCs Paul Calderwood, Jamie Shiels and Melanie Downton with Amy Lewis and daughter Niamh and the recovered pony trap

An equine charity based near Keynsham which lost a horse trailer and equipment worth thousands of pounds in a burglary is appealing for help to replace the items. The team at Small Strides CIC, which gives disadvantaged children and adults the chance to interact with horses and ponies at its site at Queen Charlton and in outreach visits, were left devastated by the theft from founder Amy Lewis’ farm in Wick last month. After breaking through three locks, including a padlocked gate and wheel lock, the thieves took a trailer worth around £3,000, used to take the charity’s Shetland pony to schools and groups. A child’s bike and a pony trap were also taken during the raid, which forced the organisation to cancel visits and sessions it had booked at day centres, nursing homes and more. “It feels like it was a targeted

burglary and they had possibly been watching,” Mrs Lewis said. “We have been going since January and we really have been building everything up and so this is just devastating.” The pony trap has since been recovered, following a tip-off to police who found the item at a field in Curtis Lane, Stoke Gifford, on August 21. Mrs Lewis said: “It’s wonderful to have the trap returned but we really need to find the trailer or replace it. “We’re going to have to start fundraising for a new one because we really need it for people’s therapy.” To find out more about Small Strides, its work and fundraising, find them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/smallstridescic. The charity also has a fundraising webpage where donations can be made at http:// gogetfunding.com/small-stridescic/.

Treasure hunters on trail around town

A treasure hunt around Keynsham will take teams to some of the town’s other hidden gems, say organisers. Participants will have to solve cryptic clues that will take them on a trail around some of the more unusual parts of Keynsham, starting and ending at St John’s Parish Church. The hunt on Saturday, September 12, which has been organised by One Community Trust Keynsham, will take around two hours to complete before all teams meet up for a barbecue at the Paddock behind the church, with refreshments and a raffle. The top five treasure seekers will get a prize, which include a metal detector as well as a “treasure chest” of goodies. The hunt, which is open to teams of up to five and to individuals, starts at around 1.45pm. The barbecue begins at 4pm and the entry ticket, £5 for adults and £3 for children, will include a free burger or hot dog. Tickets are available from St John’s Parish Office as well as some High Street shops.

MPs urged to fight plan to ‘fast-track’ fracking bids

Bath and North East Somerset’s MPs are being urged to take a stand against fracking following a government announcement that planning applications could be fast-tracked to avoid delays. The call to North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg and Bath MP Ben Howlett, both Conservatives, has been made by B&NES’ Liberal Democrat group. In a letter to them, local councillors ask the pair to oppose the Government’s new measures “to ensure that hard-won additional protections for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Sites are not eroded”. Under the new rules, councils will have to make a decision on applications to drill for shale gas with a 16-week period or ministers could step in. Councillor Cherry Beath (Liberal Democrat, Combe Down), the Liberal Democrat shadow for Homes and Planning,

said: “Fracking in the vicinity of Bath is absolutely unthinkable and our local MPs must join with councillors and residents in opposing this threat. “Any damage to the hot springs could be catastrophic for the fabric of the city and the local economy.” In 2013, a bid by UK Methane to carry out exploratory drilling near Hicks Gate, Keynsham, was withdrawn several months after the firm first submitted the application to B&NES Council. Hundreds of residents signed a petition against the scheme. In July of the same year, a motion was put forward by the council’s Conservative group to register concerns about fracking in the B&NES area and the potential impact on the hot springs, local countryside and reservoir water supply and to look into measures to protect the area, a call backed by all political parties. Conservative leader

Councillor Tim Warren (Mendip) told Keynshamvoice: “The Conservative group have huge concerns about fracking in this area. “We feel that, among other things, the infrastructure is not good enough and that the process could be detrimental to the spa waters, which would then have a negative impact on the surrounding economy.” In response to the renewed call to oppose fracking locally, MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said: “Fracking may well provide a cheap and secure form of energy. This would help people to heat their homes and reduce dependency on countries like Russia. “However, it needs to be done safely and in suitable areas. “North East Somerset is protected by a number of planning guidelines, including the Avon Act, greenbelt and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”

‘Horse has bolted’ over new homes

There is a play area between 86 and 88 Hurn Lane. It has been there for over 30 years and has been a haven for residents since the houses were built in the Seventies. It is a wonderful habitat for wildlife and has a thriving community of bats living in the trees there. During the election period in May, a planning application for two houses was received by B&NES. A large number of

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

residents objected to B&NES via the website. Towards the start of the period for objection, the town council met. At that stage, no objection from anybody appeared on the B&NES website. The town council assumed there was no objection and informed B&NES that they supported the application. As one of the residents who objected to the planning application, I am appalled that none of the local objectors had any opportunity to express their concerns at a council meeting before the decision was made and that none of their objections have ever appeared on the B&NES website. At the town council planning meeting on August 24, the town council took the very unusual step of reversing their original decision, once they knew that objections had been made. A little late as the approval had been given at the end of July. Unfortunately, it appears that the law is biased towards developers as, according to the town councillors present, once a planning application has been passed, there is no appeal provision for residents or the town council.

keynshamvoice

Of course, if it fails, developers can appeal or put in an alternative plan. That doesn’t seem fair to me. The only recourse for residents now is the expensive judicial review route where a figure of £5 000 is required. Did they [councillors] not appreciate or understand the importance of the amenity and recreation space on the estate? They just assumed they knew best and made a very bad decision which they have now reversed in a classic “shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted” scenario. Andy Wait

I note that in August’s Keynshamvoice letters that S Redworth reprimanded me for blatantly ignoring a Saltford speed camera. The camera had been obscured by trees for weeks and that fact, combined with a B&NES contact telling me that that the camera had been non-operational for some time, convinced me that it had been taken down. The Space kicks off a full season of performance, music and film With its ever-growing music festival, Keynsham already has a strong reputation for live entertainment. But now its newest venue, The Space at Market Walk, is developing a programme all of its own that promises to put the town on the map for concerts and performances. Over the coming weeks, the 120-seat venue will be playing host to Bath Children’s Festival of Literature, a celebration of the 2015 Rugby World Cup and events to coincide with Oxfam’s month-long music festival Oxjam. First up will be a date for young families, as author Anna Wilson takes her audience on an adventure in Wonderland at an interactive storytelling event at The Space as part of Bath Children’s Festival of Literature. The show, aimed at children aged six to eight, takes place on Saturday, September 26, from 11-11.45am and tickets are

£3 per child, free for adults. The following month, the venue will welcome Live Wire Theatre to perform a newly commissioned comedy play in honour of this autumn’s international rugby tournament. Hands Up for Johnny Willkinson’s Right Boot, by

award-winning writer Dougie Blaxland, relives the highs and lows of Rugby Union’s 150-year history in what is billed as “a fast-paced, high energy piece of the theatre full of song, rhyme and physical comedy”. The show is touring the South West from Cheltenham to Cornwall, calling at Keynsham on Thursday, October 15. Tichets are £10 or £8, visit www. livewiretheatre productions. co.uk for more information. Acts are also being lined up to join the nationwide fundraising music festival that is Oxjam on October 9, which is coming to Keynsham for the first time, with more details available soon. Keynsham Film Works’ 2015/16 season has just kicked off too, bringing cinema to The Space every month – more details are available at www. keynshamfilmworks.co.uk. Keynsham councillor Alan Hale said: “It is pleasing to see that so many uses are now

being made of The Space at the new Civic Centre. It certainly underlines how Keynsham is becoming the place to appear for many artists and performing groups. “To have elements of the various Bath Festivals coming to town can only strengthen the reputation of Keynsham as being a great town to live in, work in and socialise in. People do not have to go to the cities for a night out.” Tickets for events at The Space are available from the town council’s offices in Temple Street or from the Bath Bakery cafe in the library.

Young people also took part in team-building exercises as well as games such as tree identification.

School’s pride as ‘partnership’ leads to record-breaking results Wellsway’s Year 11 examination results for 2015 are the best in the school’s history, with a record-breaking 81.3 per cent of students achieving five or more A*-C grades, including English and mathematics. This represented a further improvement on last year’s results and the fourth consecutive year at Wellsway in which Year 11 results have shown improvement. On results day, head of school Simon White said: “It was a pleasure to have been present this morning and to have shared in the enjoyment and celebration of our students and their families. Our students’ success is due to a strong partnership between parents/carers, students and teachers. I hope that everyone in our school community feels a sense of satisfaction and pride that our collective efforts have reaped such tangible reward. “This group of young people can now move on to the next phase of their lives and, with

further hard work, be in a strong position to achieve more success into the future. “This news today, combined with record Sixth Form results last week, means that we can be justifiably proud of the efforts of our students and staff in the last school year.” The school was very pleased with the fact that 90 per cent of English students and 89 per cent of mathematics students passed these subjects with an

A*-C grade. Mr White added: “Continuing improvement in these two key areas has been, and will continue to be, at the heart of our school’s efforts to provide a first-class experience for our students. “Not only do our students enjoy first-rate teaching, our dedicated staff also provide a broad and diverse range of experiences such as study visits (at home and abroad), drama, music, sport and many other supports which

contribute to students becoming the rounded, balanced and caring young people that we see every day.” Wellsway’s Sixth Form was open for enrolment on results day to current Wellsway students as well as welcoming students from other schools in the region. See the school's website for more details on open days and visiting – www.wellswayschool.com. Headteacher Andrea Arlidge said: “We congratulate all our students who have received public examination results this summer and recognise that they are also the outcome of high quality teaching, support from our wider staff and the valuable support of parents/carers and governors, none of which can be underestimated. “The local governing body congratulate the staff at Wellsway and are similarly thrilled with what this news means for young people and families in our local area.”

Academy students raise the bar with their results For the third successive year, all at Broadlands Academy are celebrating another outstanding set of GCSE examination results. Students have once again achieved well over 60 per centattainment of 5A*-C grades with English and maths and have broken all previous records in the levels of progress they have made. In English, the academy continued to be significantly above the national average with 84 per cent achieving an A*-C grade and 95 per cent making expected progress. Maths and science results are also once again above the national benchmark. Principal Dean Anderson stated: “All at Broadlands are incredibly proud of the way in which our students have applied themselves in order to ensure they achieved the results they deserved. “As an academy, we are

the future and look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students in September.” He added that the continued success was as a result of not only the hard work put in by students and staff, but also because as a small school they had been able to focus on personalising the curriculum and support for each individual student. The academy is hosting its annual Open Evening for prospective students on Tuesday, September 22, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, an opportunity to view many aspects of the academy and meet the people who have helped students achieve their potential.

Alert over bogus college websites

Local students have been warned to be aware of fake college or university websites after a bogus site claiming to be linked to Bath’s Prior Park College Educational Trust came to light. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Trading Standards department was alerted to the scam in which students were asked by fraudsters to make payments of up to £5,500. Julie Barr, deputy bursar at The Prior Park Schools, said the college had been contcated by a number of people who had parted with money in the false belief they were getting a place to study there. She said: “Prior Park College deplores the fraudulent use of its formal company name, Prior Park Educational Trust, by a group who have set up a webpage offering adult education courses and the promise of UK visas.” If anyone believes they have been affected by this scam, contact Prior Park College Educational Trust on 01225 835353 to establish whether you are registered as a student at the college.

Students rise to the challenge in first year with learning federation

Hanham Woods Academy is looking ahead to a bright future after a very successful first year as part of the Cabot Learning Federation. The school has seen its headline GCSE rate rise for the third successive year and the overall pass rate in the sixth form has increased. This year 53 per cent of students achieved five or more A*-C GCSEs including English and maths. Impressively, the year-on-year improvements have been achieved across all the key performance indicators in attainment and progress; students' achievements include 5A*-C GCSEs at 62 per cent, English A*-C 63 per cent, Maths A*-C 71 per cent. Humanities, health and social care, PE and the creative arts are all producing strong results. Some subjects saw a record number of A*/A passes. Outstanding individual performances came from students of all abilities. George Hockenhull

with 7As and 2A* and Velvet Jones with a Distinction*, 2A*, 3As, 1B and 1C were two of the highest performing students. Star performances also came from Olivia Thompson, Katie Stokes and Kye Tasker, who also achieved their ASDAN Gold Certificate in addition to gaining GCSEs. Principal Phil Bevan said: “Hanham Woods is a fully comprehensive academy and we are very proud of the fact that 98 per cent of all students accomplished a GCSE grade in English and maths. This year’s success has been built upon the continuous hard work and dedication of students over the last two years. Particularly impressive has been the resilience of students to never give up, their growth mindset and the willingness to rise to the challenge. “Thank you to staff and parents for being an inspiration for our students and supporting them on this successful journey.

I wish our students every success as they move on either to further study or apprenticeships. I very much look forward to seeing a large number of them with us at HWA in the Cabot Learning Federation Post 16. Mr Bevan added that overall pass rates for students in both Years 12 and 13 had increased again. “We are pleased to be celebrating the deserved success of our students, who have again impressed us with their determination and hard work. We are delighted that everyone who has applied to university has been offered a place. Rhiannon Doherty who achieved AAA will be going to Glasgow University to do Celtic Studies. “We are also very proud of the increased number of students successfully being recruited to apprenticeships.” The CLF, which HWA joined in 2014, comprises four other secondary schools in east Bristol

– John Cabot Academy, Bristol Brunel Academy, Bristol Metropolitan Academy and King’s Oak Academy – as well as Hans Price Academy in Weston-super-Mare and Bath Community Academy. The schools have a joint post16 provision, which saw strong and improved results in 2014-15. The federation is anticipating record numbers of about 600-700 Year 12 and Year 13 students for the new academic year. Director of Post 16 Claire Stewart said: “We are delighted with our results this year because our students and staff have worked so hard to achieve some amazing grades. It means students have successfully widened their opportunities and can have a choice over their next destination.” CLF chief executive Steve Taylor added: “I am delighted that results remain so strong across our academies. Well done to the students, their teachers and the Post 16 team.”

Academy ‘delighted’ with first set of results Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy (BTEA) has posted its first-ever set of GCSE results – with almost all of its students achieving a good pass in its “core” subjects. The academy in Stoke Gifford is one of 30 University Technical Colleges across England, catering for pupils from Bristol and the surrounding areas in Years 10 to 13, and with a strong focus on engineering and environmental technologies. Almost 90 per cent of students were awarded a good GCSE pass in maths and engineering. “We were delighted with our students’ GCSE results in our core STEM subjects and many have done exceptionally well,” says principal Rhian Priest. “After less than two years, we are already seen to be on course to achieving our core vision – that of becoming a centre of excellence for teaching engineer-

ing and environmental technologies, and preparing students for a potential career in these crucial and exciting disciplines.” Open evenings are being held at the academy from 6.308.30pm on Thursdays September 24, October 15 and November 19. Open day visits can also be arranged by appointment on Thursdays September 24, October 1, October 15, November 5 and November 19. BTEA is sponsored by the University of the West of England and GKN Aerospace and also receives support from Airbus, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Navy. There are also strong links with the City of Bristol College and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. There are some Year 10 places available at BTEA for September. September, 2015

with PC Kerry Grace

Hello to you all, I hope you have all had a lovely summer. I am another month into my role again now and, due to the support of the colleagues around me, I am beginning to feel more settled and less like a fish out of water. Regarding some of the issues we have being having of late, unfortunately, antisocial behaviour seems to still be continuing at the Community Woodland area on Manor Road where smashed bottles, lit fires and damage to trees are still continuing. Our team continues to patrol the area and deal with whatever we find whenever we are there but, unfortunately, this cannot be all of the time. This is where we rely on local residents working with us and

informing us whenever they see such incidents occurring. As ever, our Friends of Manor Road Woodlands are invaluable regarding the sterling work they continue to do in this area. Keynsham Memorial Park’s bandstand has also been an area where some of our youth have been congregating at night over the summer, sometimes well into the night, much to the dismay of residents who use the park during the day time and our park keepers who are often faced with clearing up criminal damage and littering the next morning after a “gathering”. Although I would not want to exclude our youths from using this wonderful facility during the evenings, I would ask them to be mindful that others need to enjoy the park as well.

Criminal damage, drug taking, drug dealing and littering will not be tolerated and will be dealt with. I am pleased to say that we have dealt with several incidents of drug possession over the last few weeks and we will continue to make this area a priority on our patrols on an evening. It is alarming that some of our youths appear to be in areas such as this until the early hours. My advice to parents would be to check the validity of your offsprings’ stories of “staying at a mate’s house” and ask questions as to who exactly they are with. I will speak to you all again next month. Stay safe Kerry

Residents are being warned to be wary of any phone calls in which the caller says their council tax can be reduced for a fee. Bath and North East Somerset Council has issued the alert after reports of the bogus calls being made to households across the area. The company making the calls is not connected to the council or working on its behalf, a spokesperson said, and any residents who receive a call asking for a fee to reduce council tax charges should end the call straight away. Anyone who thinks their property might be in the wrong council tax band can ask the Valuation Office Agency to review it on 0300 050151. Anyone affected by bogus cold callers should contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service helpline on 03454 04 05 06. If you are concerned that you may have compromised the safety of your bank details, you should contact your bank immediately.

Santas will be setting off again for two good causes

Two charities will be receiving an early Christmas gift when hundreds of Santas take to the streets between Saltford and Keynsham once again in an annual fun run. Saltford Santa Dash is back for the third year and will take place on Sunday, December 6, with registration now open. The event has raised more than £25,000 over the past two years and this year the runners, clad in bright red Santa suits, will be supporting Time2Share and the Carers’ Centre, which both carry out work in the local community. Time2Share provides a befriending service to give disabled children and young people who may be socially isolated the extra support and stimulation they need. By connecting volunteer “befrienders” to disabled young people, the charity aims to give them greater independence and fuller participation in social and leisure activities. The Carers’ Centre, in Rad-

stock, is another local charity supporting carers across Bath and North East Somerset. They offer advice, breaks away from caring and emotional and practical support to those looking after family members or friends. The Santa Dash is open to runners of all abilities over the age of 12. It follows a five-mile

route starting and ending at Saltford Sports Ground. For younger runners, there is a Mini Santa Run around the sports ground. If you would like to get involved, as a runner or volunteer, visit the Santa Dash website www.saltfordsantadash.webs. com.

Help to run library’s service on Saturdays

Residents could enable a local library forced to close its doors at weekends to reopen. Staff shortages have led to Saltford Library closing on Saturday mornings – but volunteers from the community could step in to run the service instead. With a number of people expressing an interest in helping to operate the service on Saturdays, the Library Service is now asking anyone who may like to become a volunteer to get in touch. Volunteers work at a number of local libraries, including Paulton, which enables them to extend their opening hours. Volunteers at Saltford would be able to call staff at Keynsham Library for advice if they needed to. Application forms will be available online at Saltford Parish Council’s website – www. saltfordparishcouncil.gov.uk. Anyone who would like to find out more can contact Lorraine Corbishley from Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Library Service on 01225 394041.

Pair to walk a marathon twice for Alzheimer’s Two friends from Keynsham are walking the equivalent of more than two marathons in less than 24 hours to help battle an illness that affects thousands across Britain. Claire Weymouth, 27, and Zoe Young, 33, will set off from Putney Bridge in London to walk 100km to Henley in the Thames Path Challenge on September 12. They will join nearly 4,000 other walkers all raising money for good causes and the pair have chosen to support the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity they believe needs more support for its work on dementia research. Claire, a geo-environmental consultant, took part in the 26mile Stonehenge Trek last year in aid of the charity and this year has enlisted police officer Zoe to join her on her charity challenge. She said: “I feel it’s a really under-supported charity. There’s always so much going on for other causes. So many people are affected by Alzheimer’s – the statistics are quite scary – and I think that they need more support. “I did the Stonehenge Trek last year and got really good support locally so I thought I had

to up the ante this year if I was going to ask people to support me again.” Setting themselves a minimum £1,000 fundraising target, which they’ve already reached on their online fundraising page, the pair have been putting on their walking boots whenever they can to prepare for the trek along the Thames. Building up from 10-mile to 30-mile walks, Claire has been struck by injury and advised to rest before the challenge but Zoe has continued to head out whatever the weather to train. Claire said: “Zoe might have to give me a piggy back but I will cross the finish line!” The Alzheimer’s Society says around 225,000 people develop dementia every year in the UK – equivalent to around one person every three minutes. Yet, the Government invests eight times less in dementia research than cancer research, says the charity. To support Claire and Zoe’s fundraising walk, visit their webpage at www.justgiving.com/ Claire-weymouth-Zoe-young. For more on the Alzheimer’s Society, visit www.alzheimers. org.uk.

Pair reach end of journey across continents to help Malawi charity Two Keynsham men have returned home after an epic drive that took them thousands of miles across Africa to reach the charity that inspired the trip. Mike White and James Ellis set off on their Key2Africa challenge on March 22 with the aim of driving to Malawi, to roll up their sleeves and get involved with the projects run by the Joshua Orphan and Community Care charity. After months on the road, camping, crossing borders and a route change that saw them ship their Land Rover down to South Africa after reports of unrest in countries that lay ahead on their journey, the pair drove north to arrive in Malawi in July. There they headed to a rural part of Blantyre where the Joshua charity supports around 20 communities, providing health and education services. The former Wellsway students joined other volunteers

an expensive 15-mile journey away. With poor hygiene, the pair said they saw many cases of ringworm, infected cuts from the rocky terrain and rashes caused by the laundry soap many people used to wash with because they couldn’t afford soap for their skin. Other patients were taken to hospital for treatment, while Jean also visited people’s homes, including a young girl whose serious burns would have otherwise gone untreated. The pair’s visit also attracted the interest of the media in Malawi, with a local newspaper, TV news team and radio station interviewing them about their journey and the work they were carrying out with the charity. Mike added: “As Joshua was what our trip was centred around it was a great experience and a privilege to see the impact they are having on people’s lives every day.” For more about the Key2Africa journey, visit www. key2africa.org.uk or find them on Facebook, and for more about the Joshua Orphan and Community Care charity, visit joshuainmalawi.org.uk.

Mike said: “What we have found with all the kids in every community, is they love to play. The smaller ones love to be picked up and the slightly older ones just want you to kick a ball around with them, or constant high fives and fist pumps, they love the attention.” There were also long days spent helping a retired British nurse, Jean, run the health clinics set up by the charity to provide vital services that would otherwise be out of reach to many, with the nearest hospital

Thinking about having dermal filler injections? As skin ages it loses its elasticity and becomes less supple, resulting in lips losing their fullness and deep lines appearing around the mouth and nose area. As with all medical/cosmetic advances and techniques, dermal fillers have changed over time – gone are the days of the “trout pout” and the permanent fillers . Modern dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin. They are the most popular volume-enhancing treatments and can reduce facial lines and restore plumpness to the lips, redefining the shape of your face. Overall they produce safe, long-lasting and natural looking

results. Dependent on the area treated, results can last up to 18 months. The most common areas to treat are the lines that run from the nose to mouth as in Photo 1, below, or to add volume to the body of the lips. The treatment is quick and results are instant – with many patients opting to put make-up on immediately afterwards and head straight back to work! We apply local anaesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Prices are dependent on the amount of product used, and every client is different: l Lip fillers from £200 l Nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines) from £300

Police host meeting on Watch schemes

Jacob Rees-Mogg MP All elections have a fascination for politicians so the first major stirrings of next year’s American presidential election were a gripping distraction while I was on holiday in the Unites States. Although the vote will not take place until November 2016, the two main parties both have to select their presidential candidates. In the Democrat camp Hillary Clinton is currently firmly in the lead with speculation that Vice President Joe Biden may enter the fray and produce a real contest. This has left the excitement in the Republican contest. In every electoral cycle both parties choose a leader, there is no permanent figure and even sitting presidents are sometimes challenged. Sixteen

Republicans have so far volunteered their services, so many that the first television debate on Fox News had to be divided into two to accommodate them all. Fox News is not entirely dissimilar to Sky News, except it does not have to be impartial and makes no bones about its right-wing sympathies. It is to Republicans what the Daily Mail or Daily Telegraph is to Conservatives. Yet one of the candidates, Donald Trump, has ended up attacking it, making allegedly vulgar remarks about one of its leading presenters and debate moderator Megyn Kelly. Donald Trump is an extraordinary figure. A star of reality television, a once bankrupt property billionaire who

in his late 60s has moved into politics. He has the money to fund his own campaign and is clearly a charismatic figure but not one any senior Republican thought could be taken seriously. He tramples on the politesse of politics, says he may run as an independent if not chosen by the Republicans and offends whom he may. There are parallels to the United Kingdom where antipolitics politicians have been popular in recent times and the body of professional politicians held in low esteem, but as so often America goes further. The Republicans are flirting with a figure who seems not only unelectable but absurd. Yet he is currently the frontrunner.

Jess gives hair the chop to help other children

Keynsham Voice—1/4 page Jess Caines with the hair that will be turned into a wig by the Little Princess Trust; right, before her haircut at Keynsham’s Bonzo Lounge

Keynsham schoolgirl Jess Caines raised more than £300 for charity when she had her hair cut at an event last month. The ten-year-old had 13 inches of her hair chopped off, which has now gone to the Little Princess Trust to be turned into a wig for a child who has lost their own hair through cancer treatment or serious illness. Family and friends joined Jess at Bonzo Lounge in Keynsham on August 14 to cheer her on, donate to the cause and have a go on the bouncy castle set up on the terrace outside by Jess’s mum’s partner Jamie Gunton, of Bristol Fun For Hire. With around £80 donated on the day, Jess added this to the sponsorship money she had collected through her fundraising webpage, bringing the total to £365 – more than enough to cover the cost of a wig. Jess’s mum Gemma Brown

said she had been very brave and added: “Jess loves her hair short and said it’s easier to look after as it doesn't get knotty!” People can still donate to the cause through Jess’s webpage at www.justgiving.com/GemmaBrown31. For more about Little Princess Trust, visit www.little princesses.org.uk.

Extra pair of hands for foodbank team

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham

A new way of doing business Imagine a town whose businesses offer jobs and training, deliver social benefits, are co-operatively owned and take care of the planet – all while providing the essential goods and services the local community needs. “Transition oriented” enterprises just like this are springing up across Britain, proving it’s possible to make a profit and be a force for good. Each of these enterprises is driven by committed people with the vision, passion and creativity to identify a new, more sustainable way of doing business; people who are changing where they live for the better. Together they are providing for their communities’ fundamental needs – food, energy, transport

and housing. In fact, in Keynsham there is already at least one business like this – Keynsham Community Energy – where creating wellbeing is as important as creating wealth. Research has shown that money spent on local, independent businesses has a bigger and more positive impact on the communities in which they operate than the same amount of money spent in chain stores and corporations. That is because most money spent with local businesses gets re-spent in the local economy

September, 2015

on good and services. However, only a small amount of money spent in chains remains in the community, with the majority going elsewhere. There are many different social enterprises, including construction firms, bus companies, bakeries, cafes, care services, farms, community banks, pubs, shops and energy companies. These companies are financially viable trading entities making a profit while fulfilling a real community need, delivering social benefits and having beneficial environmental impacts. Transition Keynsham wants to see more social enterprises serving our community. Anyone interested in joining us, or who already has an idea they’d like some help getting started, please get in touch at keynshamt@yahoo.co.uk.

The team behind Keynsham Foodbank is looking for another volunteer to help them collect and supply food to those in need. The organisation is appealing for someone who is available on Tuesday afternoons to collect donated groceries from a drop box at the town’s Waitrose store and take them to the foodbank warehouse at Broadlands Academy. The volunteer would also take food items to the distribution centre at St Francis Church, Warwick Road, to replenish stocks there. The tasks are likely to take no more than a couple of hours and the new recruit would work flexibly with another volunteer. Foodbank coordinator Alan Hale said: “Like all of our other volunteers this role is a vital link in the chain that accepts gifts of food from our generous community through to the provision of food for those who experience the need to use the foodbank in a time of food and/or money shortage.” The volunteer must have their own vehicle and be able to lift. Puppy walkers Janice and David Nash with their current puppy, German shepherd Yago, outside Sainsbury’s Keynsham

Store to raise funds and name guide dog puppy Staff and customers at a Keynsham supermarket are helping a puppy take its first steps towards becoming a guide dog. After putting it to a vote, Sainsbury’s, at Market Walk, has chosen to support the charity Guide Dogs, pledging to raise £2,500 over the next 12 months. Fundraisers will be able to choose a name for the puppy they support as well as receiving a birth certificate and a photo. Store manager Kevin Cook said: “Guide Dogs was chosen as our charity partner for the next 12 months following a recent instore vote by staff and customers. “We were looking for a practical way to help the charity that all our staff and customers could get behind. So when we heard about Guide Dogs’ Name a Puppy initiative we just had to take part. “It’s exciting to know that we are doing something that will change someone’s life. We are fascinated to look behind the scenes at how much work goes into creating one of these fantastic dogs, that everyone knows and loves.”

Guide Dogs, formerly Guide Dogs for the Blind, has been breeding and training guide dogs for more than 75 years providing thousands to assist blind and partially sighted people. Sarah Knox, community fundraiser for Guide Dogs, said: “We were over the moon when we found out that Guide Dogs had won the staff and customer vote, and we look forward to working with them over the next 12 months. Naming a puppy is a really special thing to do and we are absolutely delighted that Sainsbury’s Keynsham has chosen to concentrate their fundraising efforts on that. “It costs almost £50,000 to support a Guide Dog partnership from the birth of the pup to its retirement aged about 10. We don’t receive any government funding for this service so without the generosity of public donations we wouldn’t be able to support the 4,800 Guide Dog partnerships in the UK.” To find out more about the charity’s Name a Puppy initiative, call 0845 3727407 or email sarah. knox@guidedogs.org.uk.

Keynsham Food Festival 2015 Plenty on the menu at fourth food festival

Now in its fourth year, the 2015 Keynsham Food Festival is set to bring locals and traders together for a FREE festival open to everyone. Come along and sample local cheeses, chocolates, cakes, Asian cuisine, organic fresh fruit and veg, fudge, local meats and much more. Pizza Adorare will be there serving their amazing breakfast pizza buns, so you can get your day off to a great start! This year’s event will see over 20 local food producers, hoteliers, drinks providers plus much more for a family friendly festival – celebrating all that’s great about Keynsham’s local traders. The festival takes place on Saturday, October 3, at the Scouts’ Headquarters, Ashton Way, Keynsham from 9am-3pm. The event is being sponsored

by Grounded, Kitco, The New Inn, Tesco & Waitrose. There’s something for everyone with bouncy castle, face painting, biscuit decorating, food into pictures and a chance to win a luxury hamper from Waitrose. We have even started the fun early with pizza-making at Café Grounded on Thursday evening from 4-7pm. Tickets are £8 per head, and include pizza dough, toppings and unlimited squash. Booking can be made in advance at the cafe, or on the day. There will be limited capacity, so it will be on a first come, first served basis. Entry to the festival is free and it’s set to be a fantastic day out. If you haven’t yet reserved your table and are a local trader, it might not be too late. Please contact info@11twelve.co.uk to discuss opportunities.

Join a pizza party to top them all

Pizza-making parties give kids the chance to be a Grounded pizza chef for the day, topping freshly made pizza dough with homemade tomato sauce and their choice of toppings. There are a host of different toppings to choose from, including salami, chorizo, chargrilled peppers, artichokes, mushrooms, olives, sweetcorn, mozzarella and many more. The youngsters are given the opportunity to design their pizza first, thinking about how to create an attractive balance of colours and flavours. The team encourages them to try toppings they’ve never had before, or wouldn’t think to put on a pizza, and many enthusiastically pile on fresh spinach, to the delight of their parents! It’s safe to say that the default ham and cheese pizza is a thing of the past. More information can be found on Grounded’s website www.cafegrounded.co.uk.

Quasimodo High in the Notre Dame towers, The Hunchback makes the bells swing. And down in the city streets below, Parisians hark to their ring.

keynshamvoice

September, 2015

Quasimodo showed him the method Of getting the great bells to chime. Then just to be sure that the man understood He showed him again one more time. But when he came to try it himself I’m afraid that he got it quite wrong. A huge bell swung back all out of control And smashed in his face ... with a BONG.

People had great admiration, For the famous bell ringer’s art. For they knew that the beautiful music Came from deep in his heart.

He lay there all bleeding, unconscious, Lying as lifeless as wood. The paramedics quickly arrived on the scene And patched him as best as they could.

One man watched him in action A-swinging and ringing with ease. Then approached him and asked him the question “Could I have a go if you please?”

“Could you tell us who this man is Who’s lying here fighting for life? When we take him down to the infirm’ry We must inform his poor wife.”

Notre Dame “I’ve often seen him around before, Though I do not know him that well. I’m afraid I never knew his name, But his face just rang a bell.” George Liddell

Church choir return home on high note after success of summer tour

St John’s Church Choir are back performing on home turf after returning from a tour of the Netherlands. Nearly 40 members performed concerts in Amsterdam, Delft and Noorwijk, with ages ranging from seven to 90 and

the tour. Conductor Roger Peach said: “It was a wonderful trip; having all ages represented made it a very special experience. We were warmly welcomed at every venue, and the standard of singing and playing was extremely high throughout.”

After a well-deserved break the choir resumes regular duties at St John’s Church this month. New members are always welcome – contact Roger at rogerpeach@keynshamparish.org.uk, on 0117 9863354 or visit www. keynshamparish.org.uk.

In Good Health with the team at Chandag Road Pharmacy Cholesterol is a topic that frequently hits the headlines and it feels like we are forever being told to know our values or reduce our levels. That’s all very well, but do we all understand what cholesterol actually is? Cholesterol is a soft, fatty substance that is made by the liver. Some is also taken in from the food we eat. It is essential that we have some cholesterol in our body as it helps keep us healthy through its involvement with the production of certain hormones and the production of certain vitamins to ensure our digestive system works properly, among other functions. Proteins carry cholesterol in the blood, and when the two combine they are called lipoproteins. There are harmful and protective lipoproteins known as LDL and HDL. LDL or “bad” cholesterol

is made up of mostly fat and a little bit of protein. Too much LDL can cause cholesterol to build up in the arteries, making it difficult for blood to flow. HDL cholesterol or “good” cholesterol is made up of high protein and a small amount of fat. It helps prevent cholesterol building up in the arteries. Different people who eat the same amount of fat can have different cholesterol levels for a variety of different reasons. However, in general, if you eat less fat, your cholesterol level is likely to go down. Cholesterol levels can be measured by a simple blood test carried out at the GP surgery or at some pharmacies. Current UK guidelines suggest aiming for a total cholesterol level below 4mmol/L and LDL level below 2mmol/L. A total cholesterol level above

5mmol/L is considered high. High cholesterol affects six out of 10 people in the UK but many people may not realise they have it as it does not cause any symptoms. A high cholesterol level can lead to cardiovascular problems such as stroke, angina and heart attack. Risk is increased further if you are overweight, do little exercise, smoke, drink excessive alcohol or eat a very high carbohydrate diet. If you wish to lower your cholesterol level, changing diet and carrying out regular exercise is often enough to see a change in values. Your diet should be low in fat, so cutting down on biscuits, cakes, pastries, cheese and butter is advisable. Foods such as eggs, prawns and offal are also known to contain large amounts of cholesterol.

Fibre is thought to lower cholesterol so it is important to eat plenty of fibre-rich foods. Foods containing plant sterols or stanols are frequently advertised on TV and have been shown to lower cholesterol in combination with a low-fat diet and physical activity. If dietary measures and exercise fail to reduce cholesterol levels, your GP may advise you to start taking cholesterol lowering medication, of which there are several different types. If you are worried about your cholesterol or medicines and would like some advice, speak to your local GP or pop into Chandag Road Pharmacy and have a word with our pharmacist. We are able to carry out cholesterol checks in store, but please call in advance to book an appointment.

Linguist launches new classes for toddlers A young entrepreneur from Keynsham has launched her own business to teach toddlers new languages. Rachel Raby-Elmer, 22, has set up Lingotot to share her passion for languages with young people and will be working with schools and nurseries in her hometown as well as Brislington, Whitchurch and Knowle. Rachel, who studied Applied Languages: French and Spanish at the University of Portsmouth,

said it was when she worked as an au pair in Spain that she realised what she wanted to as a career. She said: “I really enjoyed spending time with the mother’s daughter and teaching her another language. Having also helped at a kids’ club as a teenager I was reminded how much I love working with children.” Rachel is beginning sessions in French and Spanish this month. Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group The teddy bears’ picnic held in lovely sunshine in the Memorial Park on August 9, although thoroughly enjoyed by those that took part, was disappointingly supported. After everyone finished their picnic, there was a treasure hunt-style walk around the park. The entrants had to collect teddy paw stickers, and complete a passbook to receive a prize. There was time afterwards to listen to the Bristol Brass Band on the bandstand. Although not the success that the organisers had hoped for, it was felt the event would be held again next year, maybe on a different weekend. September sees two themed walks being organised. The first is on Sunday, September 6, starting from the Memorial Park Café at 11am and will visit various private gardens that entered the recent Keynsham

in Bloom competition. The walk is about three miles and should take almost three hours and will finish in the garden of the Old Manor House Hotel. The second walk will be in association with the Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. They will kindly be providing guides, who will show us some of the historic sites around Keynsham. This will start at noon on Sunday, September 20, at the newly unveiled clock tower, and finish with a barbecue at the Memorial Park Café at about 2pm. Both walks are open to anyone. It would help the organisers if you let them know you will be attending either of the walks. Email wrwkeysham@ outlook.com or call Dave on 07866 440968.

In the Garden Brown rot in top fruit is always a problem in the amateur’s garden. Apples, plums and pears suffer each year in our case. With a heavy crop promised the loss is not so bad, but in a light year it is noticeable. The problem seems to be getting worse. When we first moved here it was never severe, but despite following the best

On the Plot With autumn just around the corner, the main task on the plot is to continue cropping and storing vegetables that will last into the winter. It’s very important to ensure that the storage conditions are right or you might lose the benefit from all your hard work. I sort and clean the potatoes and separate any that are damaged or have holes in them and use these first in the kitchen. The rest that are in good condition are more likely to store well. Make sure they are dry and put them in open-weave sacks or large brown paper bags, but do not use polythene bags

advice we seem to be losing out. No amount of investigation gives any real clues to prevention. Irregular watering, growing under grass, crowding etc. are put forward to no avail. It seems that the only way to keep it clear is to check the trees every day and remove all damaged fruit, but with a total of 10 trees it is a bit daunting. However, the fruit we do get gives so much pleasure the effort is worth it. We had a mixed bag of weather for August, with cool days and nights, hot sunshine and sporadic rain. Not really enough to do much good but it did fill the water tanks. The density and duration did not seem enough to penetrate deeply and when transferring some plants to their new home, the soil was only damp for an inch

or so. So I took the precaution of putting several cans of water into the area. We have some tumbling tomatoes in baskets which will give a good crop for two or three weeks’ time. The climbing French beans gave us a plentiful supply, aided by copious watering. Most of the brilliant flowers are now looking sad and we have been cutting the tall daisies down to the ground. Quite a long and tiring job getting to the base of the stems inside the supporting cage. The crocosmia are over but the agapanthus are in good form with lovely blue heads. We are definitely moving into the autumn period and will be putting the tall lilies into their wintering cover to rest until next spring. The clematis did not have a good summer and another original plant has died.

They have been growing for 10 years and only two remain. We shall probably look for something different to replace all the plants on the trellis. Our pots of begonias did well and flourished, as did three sunflowers, a gift from a friend. In September we shall be looking at what to do in the garden. Reposition some, scrap others, invest in new. Changing seasons give us a chance to change with it. It is a good time to repair those bare patches in the lawn. For that I have found a proprietary mixture of seed, feed and fine soil. It is available in most garden centres with a name like Patch Repair, or similar. It is a good time to survey the garden furniture before storage and to make any repairs or replacements.

because they need air circulation or they will sweat and start to deteriorate. Put them in a dark, frost-free area, such as the garage, and periodically inspect them and remove any suspect potatoes. For onions and shallots the approach is similar but use net bags or old tights and hang them up if possible and again inspect them periodically. Other root crops like carrots can stay in the ground for a while longer but parsnips and swede are best left there until needed. Marrows, pumpkins and squashes can be picked and put in the sun to ripen for a few days. Again, store them in a frost-free place and they will last well into

the winter. In fact I have only just used the last of last year’s squash crop. There is still time to sow lettuce for a winter crop but they will need to be covered with cloches to provide some protection and you might like to take a chance with carrots as well. September is an ideal time to plant a new strawberry bed. Choose a spot where potatoes or tomatoes have not been grown. Incorporate some well-rotted manure or compost and make sure the ground is free of any perennial weeds, as the bed will last a few years so subsequent removal will prove difficult. Space the plants about 18 inches

apart with 24 inches between the rows. Ensure that the plant crown is not buried in the soil as they will rot and give them some water until established. Look forward to the first crop next year but remember the bed will need renewing after three years. Plants can be purchased in a garden centre and are less likely to be diseased and you will know the variety name. However, another option is to transplant “runners” from a neighbour’s strawberry bed provided, of course, that they are on offer. Finally if you plan to sow broad beans, garlic or Japanese onion sets before the winter sets in then now is the time to prepare the area.

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Imperial War Museum

A group of 40 members and guests enjoyed a full day at the Imperial War Museum on August 8. While some made use of the military records at the site, the majority toured the detailed display describing many aspects of the First World War, covering both life on the battlefield and on the home front, followed by the Second World War Galleries. The museum has a huge variety of exhibits from the wars of the last century and provides a fascinating but sobering reminder of the horrors of conflict.

Did you know?

This year sees the 150th anniversary of the arrival of electric communications in Keynsham. In 1865, the electric telegraph first arrived in the town, using the Great Western Railway as the route for the

wires. The service would have been provided by a private company as the Post Office did not take over telegraph services until five years after this.

Discover history in South Wales

On Thursday, September 24, the society will be running its final coach trip of the year. In the morning there will be a visit to the remains of the Caerleon Roman Fortress near Newport and the National Roman Legion Museum nearby, followed in the afternoon by a tour of the imposing ruins of Chepstow Castle overlooking the River Usk. Caerleon was one of the three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain. Today, much of the site is below the modern village but the remains of the amphitheatre are probably the best of their kind in Britain and the base

of a complete barrack block is exposed. There are still some places available and non-members are welcome: the cost is £22 including all admissions. If you are interested in joining the trip, contact Roger Sirett by email at roger.sirett@tiscali. co.uk or on 01761 471188.

First antiques fair for local dealer Mark

A Saltford antiques dealer is hosting his first ever antiques and collectors’ fair next month. Mark Thomas, who has two retail cabinets in Bath Antiques Centre and Top Banana in Tetbury and attends a number of local fairs, is now branching out into organising his own event. Using the contacts he has built up during his career, Mark will hold the fair at Saltford Hall on Sunday, October 25, from 10am, and he hopes it could become a regular event. He said: “The intention is to run a fair on the last Sunday in each month starting in January 2016. “Hopefully the range and quality of the items for sale will make the last Sunday in the month a regular diary date for both customers locally and from further afield.” Admission is £1, accompanied under-16s free and refreshments will be available from the Saltford Community Association café. Contact Mark on 07835 300965 or find him on Facebook at Saltford Antiques Mark Thomas.

Filmmakers continue journey from town

Thought for the Month with Rev Denise Calverley, curate, Keynsham Parish Where has your summer holiday gone? Are you just returned from an exotic, sundrenched location? Perhaps you didn't travel abroad for some time away with the family. You may have gone off to the beach, or the Lake or Peak District... just somewhere quiet for a change of scene? You certainly needed time to relax, unwind and refresh. What did you take with you to do that? And would the effects of your rest be worn off by the time you returned home? Ever heard the expression: “I need a holiday to recover from my holiday?” When I was looking forward to my summer holidays with my family, that got me thinking about the seasonal journey millions of people make to rest. And I was thinking that I wanted to be sure not to take a holiday from God... but with God. Psalm 139:3, 5-6 says:

“You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!” I particularly wanted to make time this holiday to rest with God. So I decided to take a different summer read with me. My book was Soul Surfer. It's the story of Bethany Hamilton, who as a talented 13-year-old amateur competition surfer lost her arm and nearly her life in a devastating shark attack. Bethany and her family are devout Christians and the mental, emotional, and faith journey they unexpectedly had to take was life-altering. In the midst of Bethany trying to learn what to do with her life after injury, she went to tsunami-hit Thailand to

September, 2015

help people truly devastated by disaster. In Thailand she found that surfing wasn’t the only thing in life she could do. But through her injury and a successful return to surfing, later becoming a professional, she could embrace others far more than if she’d had two arms. Bethany could not have imagined what she would go through in life. But through her faith in God, trusted that He would always be with her. This knowledge brings inner grace and restfulness to me too as a believer in Christ. As I’m back to work and the family is back to school with numerous activities, my holiday is still with me. Again Scripture says: “In returning and rest you will be saved, in quietness and trust is your salvation.” Is 30:15. May the rest of God be with you too.

Documentary filmmakers who are exploring the history of Somerset are inviting people to continue the journey with the release of their second DVD. Discovering Somerset Volume One brought Bristol-based historical specialists 1st-Take and local author Henry Buckton to Keynsham to look at how the town was affected during the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion. Now the team has released the second part of their trilogy, which will take viewers further south into the region, including Burnham-on-Sea to learn about its lighthouses and piers and to Glastonbury to learn about its lake villages, its abbey and tor and the many myths and legends connected with them. The second volume also visits the Bishop’s Palace in Wells, Shepton Mallet, the West Somerset Railway and finds out more about the Royal Bath and West Society. Estate agency answers demand to bring bespoke approach to selling After years spent transforming landmark buildings in and around Keynsham into desirable homes, the team behind these projects is bringing the same attention to detail and expertise to helping others sell their properties. With the unique homes in Whitecroft Development conversions such as Bath Hill School and Temple Infant School being snapped up, the firm found there was real demand for the same level of service and individual approach in helping their customers sell their own properties. The result is Gabriel Hirst, an estate agency and professional consultancy. Principal Carly Hales, a qualified member of the National Association of Estate Agents, said: “Many of the philosophies established as a developer are

transferable – attention to detail, customer focus, pride in the job we carry out. In addition to a transferable skill set and determination, we have experience in the property industry, we have experience of taking an inquiry through to legal completion. “We understand the importance of focusing on the individuals involved during their move into their new home.” As with Whitecroft Developments, the business is not driven by volume but by creating a bespoke service for

each client, focused on the Bristol and Bath region the team know and love. Carly added: “Gabriel Hirst has evolved through our experience in selling our own properties, we have created our business through a seller’s eyes so we have evolved from a different starting point to other traditional estate agents. “Within our team at Gabriel Hirst we have a team member with a legal background who has a thorough understanding of the legal processes beyond agreeing a sale, which helps when it

comes to ensuring an agreed sale matures to a legally completed sale. “We understand build types, warranties required, planning and building regulations as part of our developer background, which is also an advantage. Furthermore, we understand the local market, as we have invested heavily in the local property market. “The launch of Gabriel Hirst has felt like a natural progression and the business creation has been independent, driven by our experience and expertise.” Gabriel Hirst’s fee structure is appropriate to the amount of work involved in achieving the best possible value for your property. Standard fee 0.5 per cent. For more details, contact the team on 01761 490092 or carly@ gabrielhirst.co.uk.

For September, we meet James Boden, proprietor of Show Print Signs Tell us about your company. Show Print Signs was established in 2013, although my experience in the print/graphics trade dates back to 2006. I studied at Brunel College and later on at Bower Ashton, where I became increasingly involved in design. It’s just me working at Show Print, although business has really picked up this last year and I will be looking to expand the company. What service do you provide to the local community? In the past year I've concentrated on producing high quality vehicle graphics for businesses in and around Keynsham. However, I provide a wide range of services, including banners, shop fascias, window graphics, posters, flyers and branding for businesses. In fact, if it's printing/ visuals you’re after we have pretty much all bases covered. I still run my sister company – www.gicleecanvasprinting.co.uk – printing photos onto canvas as well as producing high quality art prints on a range of papers. This is how I got started in the printing trade and I still enjoy doing it to this day! What is the best part of running your business and working in Keynsham? I enjoy working in Keynsham as I'm on the doorstep of Bristol and Bath but don't have to deal with the hustle and bustle of the city

at every turn. The High Street is great and has everything you need, plus the people I work around are a friendly bunch. What makes your service different from other companies? I’m keen on people being happy with what they’ve paid for and for it to bring benefit to their business or trade. I have a number of clients who return to me for repeat business and it’s been great seeing the success they’ve had and watching their businesses grow. I pride myself on going that extra mile and get a lot of satisfaction from happy clients. What are your plans for the future of the business? As I mentioned earlier, I plan on expanding the business and taking someone on to help move Show Print forward. As the business grows I'll be looking into investing in new equipment to increase the range of products and services I offer. Feel free to get in touch today. I will be more than happy to offer advice, answer questions or offer a free quotation for your business. Swim club’s future stars emulate Siobhan’s success on national stage Photo: Alex Whitehead/SWpix.com

Keynsham Swimming Club has been buzzing with excitement over the past couple of weeks, the club reports, with local star Siobhan-Marie O’Connor competing in the World Championships in Kazan, Russia while other club members were competing a little closer to home at the British and National Championships in Sheffield. Siobhan was part of the GB Team that achieved Britain’s best ever results at the World Championships with a total of five gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Siobhan herself won an individual bronze medal in the 200m Individual Medley and also achieved a semi-final placing in the 200m Freestyle. The 19-year-old, pictured, was also part of the Mixed Medley Relay Team, which won a gold medal and set a new world record time alongside teammates

Francesca Halsall, Chris WalkerHebborn and breaststroke world record holder Adam Peaty, who also won two individual gold medals for Team GB. After the world-beating relay performance Siobhan told the Sky Academy, which has awarded her a scholarship: “I’m over the moon with the gold medal. It was one of the best races I've ever been part of.” All eyes will now turn to Rio

next summer to see if Siobhan and Team GB can continue the resurgence in British swimming through to Olympic podium success. Meanwhile, at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, the next generation of Keynsham swimmers were aiming to emulate Siobhan’s success at domestic level, competing in the British Summer National and ASA National Championships over two weeks from July 28 to August 9. Week one saw Tom Sinclair, Ben Lawton, Amelia Maughan and Jess Podger competing in the British Championships. Tom was crowned British Champion in the 50m Butterfly event and also achieved fourth place in the 100m Butterfly and was first reserve for the 200m Freestyle final. Amelia achieved a silver medal in the 200m Freestyle

and also a bronze in the 100m Freestyle. Ben gained places in the finals of the 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke events securing the bronze medal in the 100m final. Week two saw Jess Podger and Ben Lawton return to Sheffield alongside Rhiannon Bowen and Laurence Metcalfe for the ASA Summer Nationals. Jess gained final places in the 200m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley events and won gold in the 400m Freestyle event with Rhiannon gaining the bronze in the 50m Butterfly in a new personal best time. All of the swimmers should then have been enjoying a wellearned summer break. However, reports are coming in that Tom Sinclair has also won another two gold medals at the New Zealand National Championships while “on holiday” in Auckland.

Cycling sisters riding with the stars of the sport

A young cyclist from Keynsham will be riding alongside some of the sport’s most famous names next month in the last national track championships before the Olympic Games next year. Bethany Taylor, 17, will be part of a world-class group at the 2015 British Track Championships, including Sir Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy and Laura Trott. The event, at Manchester’s National Cycling Centre from September 25-27, will see Bethany go head to head with some of the stars of the sport in the last national track championship before next year’s Olympic Games in Rio. Before then, the Wellsway student is due to race in the Ladies’ International Tour of Ireland, Ras na mBan, riding 400km over five stages from September 10-14, against professional teams from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Denmark and France.

Professional status is the goal for Bethany, who also rides with local club Salt and Sham Cycle Club along with younger sister Sophie. On her future plans, Bethany says: “As I move out of the junior ranks into the U23s, my ambitions are to target the Women’s National Road & Matrix Tour Series events and travel to Europe to gain experience at the highest level whenever I can. “I hope to build in strength and credibility over the next couple of years, and after the completion of my A levels in 2016 I intend taking time out of fulltime education to concentrate on my cycling career. “I intend training and competing with a target of selection for the road events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.” Meanwhile, Sophie is getting back on her bike after dislocating her knee and fracturing her tibia

69

Bethany, left, and SophieTaylor in a youth cycling race earlier in the year. A Team GB Olympic Development Apprentice, 15-year-old Sophie is in her last year as a youth competitor and also has firm goals, including being selected for next year’s Ride London International Grand Prix and pushing for selection at the 2018 Commonwealths, along with Bethany, before fixing her sights on the 2020 Olympics. Explaining the sisters’ dedication to the sport, Sophie said: “My sister and I train up

to six days per week, plus core / gym sessions. We attend squad training sessions at Newport velodrome two to three times per week and compete nationally 4050 times per year. “Currently our parents are our sole benefactor - to achieve our dreams we are both looking to find independent sponsors who will help us with the cost of training and competition.” To find out more about sponsoring Bethany and Sophie, contact the family on dtandjt@ blueyonder.co.uk.

Team effort gets club ready for new season on and off rugby pitch In the run-up to the 2015/16 rugby season, Keynsham Rugby Club have been busy on and off the field as they look to improve on last year’s eighth position finish, writes our correspondent. The Keynsham-based club, which plays at Crown Fields, is one of the few local clubs in the region to regularly field six senior teams, with the 1st XV competing in Western Counties North; the 2nd XV in Tribute Somerset One, 3rd XV in Tribute Somerset Two North and the 4th XV in Tribute Somerset Three North.

Off the field the club’s extensive senior, junior and mini sections teamed up to update and refurbish the club house and facilities as part of the NatWest Rugbyforce weekend in which grass root rugby clubs were awarded grants to invest in their facilities and be part of the legacy that will hopefully be created by the forthcoming Rugby World Cup. The senior teams train every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8.30pm and all ages and abilities are welcome. As a member of Keynsham Rugby Club, players can expect to

receive excellent training and development opportunities by the club’s two first team coaches, Jason Wheatley and Kevin Appleton, and 2nd team coach Richard Kingscroft, as well as professional physiotherapy and use of the club’s gym. Club captain Jack Weston said: “As a family club, we are always pleased to welcome new faces down to Keynsham. “We are lucky to have such extensive facilities and pitches which not only allow us to regularly field four senior teams but also have a mini, junior and

colt rugby section, the latter of which we have been delighted to see coming through and gaining senior honours.” For any players interested in joining the club, either come along to one of the Tuesday or Thursday training sessions or get in touch with head coach Jason Wheatley on 07770 674010. The club’s first fixtures of the season are on Saturday, September 5, when the 1st XV take on Burnham-on-Sea, the 2nd XV meet Crewkerne and the 3rd XV take on Old Culverhaysians.

Keynsham Bowling Club’s A, B and C men’s teams

Bowlers keep spot in premier division

As the 2015 season draws to a close the men of the Keynsham Bowling Club can look back with satisfaction on their performances in the leagues in which they compete, writes our correspondent. The club fields three teams in the Saturday Somerset League where the A team were competing in the Premier 2 Division, having won promotion last season and, with trips to such places as Watchet, Bridgwater and North Petherton early journey starts were necessary. The team expected it to be a season of consolidation, and that was achieved as they held their own to compete at that level again in 2016. Playing in the East 2 Division the B team finished two points ahead of their nearest rivals and in winning promotion will compete in East 1 next year. Also

playing in East 2 was the club’s C team who finished in a creditable mid-league position. On one Saturday in August the B and C teams were playing each other, with the A team also at home. Our photograph shows the three teams before the start of the matches with the B team having donned blue shirts as they were the “away” side. The C team were delighted that they gave the B team a “run for their money” only going down by five shots. At the suggestion of men’s captain, Bob Edge, the afternoon finished with an American Supper party and with reduced bar prices a good attendance was assured. The highlight of the evening was when secretary Ian Tweedie got everyone laughing with his “take” on the Cornish comedian Jethro. In the Thursday Bristol and District League, the A team finished in second spot in League 2, just three points off the top, and will be promoted to League 1 in 2016. The C team playing

in League 4 finished in third position and just missed out on promotion. It would be remiss of me not to make mention of the ladies as this would mean I would not be able to enter the clubhouse again! They compete in the midweek North Somerset League and at the time of writing still had one

match to play, and it looks as if they will finish mid-table. Friendly fixtures have continued, the highlight probably being the annual ladies’ and gents’ game. A most enjoyable afternoon was had by all. The gentlemen took over the kitchen for the afternoon and prepared a delightful tea.

Junior section is ready to grow

The Fry Club Junior Section has flourished during the closed season with an additional Under-11 team playing 9v9 this season, they report. This has led to an additional 9-a-side pitch being marked on the playing fields at Somerdale. An Under-18s girls’ team has also been establish at Somerdale and will play in the new Gloucestershire FA Under-18 girls league that has been formed for this year and will launch on September 13 at the Gloucestershire FA’s HQ. This allows girls of 15, 16, 17 and 18 to continue playing football at a junior level, avoiding having to go straight into adult football and is still fundamental to the long-term player development that Fry Club JFC has adopted for all their teams. There is also Soccer Tots on Saturday mornings for under-six players. With the closure of the old Fry Club and the opening of the new Somerdale Pavilion the future is looking bright, say section managers, with very positive actions from Aquaterra which is managing the facilities. In future plans for player development the section is aiming to start more girls’ teams for the coming year and, with the new floodlit pitch ready this autumn, they will be recruiting players and coaches to establish an under-18 team to play in the Somerset FA’s Floodlit League in 2016/17 season and ongoing. Once again, the Fry Club football section has achieved the England Football Association’s Charter standard qualification, with all coaches achieving the required level of qualifications. As Fry Club Juniors FC move forward into a new era, it is looking to recruit girl and boy players, with the focus on fun and long-term development. If you are interested in playing or coaching at Somerdale with Fry’s JFC, contact chairman Bernard Grimes on 0117 987 9851 or secretary Dave Worlock on 07710 070502.

Fry Club FC’s First Team in their new strip with David Jones, MD of new sponsor Alchemy Cleaning

Fry Club FC kick off season ahead with move to new HQ The 2015/16 season ahead is a time of change for Fry Club FC as they say goodbye to what has been their home for the past 60 years and make the move to their new HQ at Somerdale Pavilion. The last home game with the familiar Cadbury’s sign as a backdrop will be played this Saturday, September 5, before action moves to the pitch in front of the new sports club and finally to the new floodlit pitch set to be ready for mid-October. While there is some sadness at leaving their characterful Fry Club base, senior committee member Daniel Webb said the change is very much a positive one for the club. “This move will give us what we believe are the best sporting facilities in the local area,” he said. “We are very excited about the new opportunities for progress, as there were limitations with the old facilities and their accessibility. The new facilities will grow over the coming months and years to feel like our club.” The First Team finished last season in second place in Somerset County League’s Premier Division, an incredible effort from the squad capped off by winning the Somerset Senior Cup in May, said manager Rob Mallett. “On that night in May, it wasn’t just the first team winning that trophy, it was the whole club,” he said. “The majority of last season’s side have stuck together and, with a few additions, I feel this has given me the best squad I’ve had since I’ve been here.” The season’s aim, he said, was to finish eligible for promotion

into the Toolstation Western League again, with the club’s new facilities in place to enable them to move forward. Meanwhile, Reserves manager Graham Hunter said he had been very pleased with the players’ application during preseason, adapting to a new coaching style and formation. “Pre-season has been really busy with a lot of games. We were proud to represent Fry Club in the Fry Cup, which was an honour and a challenge. We were disappointed not to do as well as we could have, not progressing past the first round and we have had mixed results during pre-season. I’m pleased with the progress the team has made and we’ve got a strong squad moving forward.” Thanking the other team managers for their help as he settled into his role, Graham said the goal for the season was to take the chance for promotion and to close the gap between the First Team and the Reserves, who are just two divisions below. A Team manager Sam Murray said his squad had moved up a division last season to Bristol and District League’s first division so wanted to take their pre-season very seriously this year. “We have played mixed opposition and have put in some outstanding performances,” he said. “Our 1-0 win against Imperial First Team shows what we are capable of this year. We are excited to get the season under way and are hopeful about our chances in this tough division.” With a large number of players turning up for preseason training with the B Team,

manager Gordy Clark said he is in the unusual – and favourable – situation of facing a selection headache. “I’m really pleased with the young lads coming up through the junior section, which creates competition for places and makes the whole squad feel they have earned their place,” he said. Looking ahead to mid-season, the squad want to be middle of the table in Bristol and District League Division 3 by Christmas, Gordy added. The club also has two Old Boys’ teams, taking the number of senior teams to six, offering a wide range of opportunities for players of all abilities and ages, from those who want to progress their footballing career to those who play as a hobby. The club is also celebrating a new connection with local firm Alchemy Cleaning, which has signed up as kit sponsor for the next two seasons. Daniel Webb said: “Crucial to the ongoing success of the club is the support from local sponsors and advertising partners, our main source of funding. This season we are delighted to agree a two-year sponsorship deal with local firm Alchemy Cleaning, with special thanks to managing director David Jones. This support enables us to offer our players quality training, equipment and kit and is very much appreciated. We look forward to a long and mutually rewarding relationship with them.” Anyone who would like to get involved at Fry Club FC this season can contact secretary Steve Curtis on 07929 746815 for more information.

News from The Crown Field

Saturday, October 10 Chippenham Park (Les Phillips Cup) 3pm kick-off

Keynsham Town’s season has got off to a mixed start, with two wins and two defeats from their opening four Toolstation Western League Division One games. After a 2-0 defeat at Oldland on the first day of the season in which six Keynsham players made their debut, the Ks bounced back with two home wins out of two in the space of four days. First visitors of the season to the AJN Stadium on a pleasant August evening were Wincanton Town, who were put to the sword by a superb attacking display from the Ks. After a goalless first half, new signing Stefan Lee raced through to put Keynsham one up and then secured victory minutes later with his second. These were his first goals for the club since his summer move from Stockwood Wanderers. Cheddar were the visitors the following Saturday and an eventful game saw the Ks win 4-2. After a tight first half in which Stefan Lee equalised the Cheddar opener, Cheddar lost their centre-half just after halftime to a straight red card for handball. Keynsham capitalised on this with three quick goals, with Lee scoring his second and a brace from 18-year-old Aaron Childs, his first senior goals for the club. The club were then unfortunately hit by a stomach

Frys Bowls’ season ends in promotion A strong season that saw Frys Bowls Club win 18 out of the 14 games played in the Bristol and District League has ended in promotion. With 123 points, the club claimed second place behind leaders Avonmouth, moving into Division 2 for next season. The final game of the Bristol and District League season on August 20 saw Frys take on Bristol Arrow at Somerdale.

virus, which ruled out several players for the tough visit to Corsham Town. A patched-up team recovered well from losing an early goal and fine work from Tom Harris set up “Big Stef” for his fifth goal of the season just before half-time. The game then swung in 10 dramatic second-half minutes. The referee had to retire hurt on 55 minutes and there was a lengthy delay trying to find a replacement assistant referee from the crowd. Soon after the game restarted, a defensive error by the Ks gifted Corsham the lead again. Controversy then reigned when a home forward fell over his own feet in the box, only for

the deputising referee to point to the penalty spot. The converted penalty effectively finished the game as a contest and the hosts ended up comfortable 5-1 victors. September sees two evening fixtures, including an experiment with Friday night football, at the AJN Stadium for the Ks, followed by three home cup ties around the end of the month, as follows:

Friday, September 18 Ashton & Backwell United (League) 8pm kick-off

*After the FA Vase game on October 3, the club will be holding a race night in the clubhouse. Everyone is welcome and tickets cost £5 per adult or £10 for a family ticket (two adults and two children). The club have also announced an opportunity for individuals or companies to pick their favourite Keynsham Town player and benefit through a seasonlong sponsorship for a one-off payment of only £25. Player Sponsorship packages are now available to show your support for your favourite Ks star. The sponsorship runs throughout the 2015/16 season, and includes your name and/or business name located alongside the player profile within the match day programme, confirmation of your sponsorship on the official club website (keynshamtownfc.net) and the chance to attend the club’s Sponsors’ Evening at the end of the season. In times of rising running costs, sponsorship is the lifeblood of a club like Keynsham Town and the club’s committee are hopeful that the local community will feel able to help them. There are also several other sponsorship packages available throughout the season. If you are interested, please contact Julian French at jules1233@live.com or on 07814 609853.

Frys went into the game four points off the top and needing to overturn the shots difference of 24. Bristol Arrow also needed a good result as they were in the relegation zone. The night started well for the home side on slow green with rinks one and two soon pulling out a lead. Rink three was somewhat tighter but they soon came back into the game. Controversy came just after the halfway point when the visitors tried to call the game to an end, which Frys were having

none of. The game continued with rink two pulling further away but rink one let slip their lead. A late surge from rink one saw them pull away again in the last few end to secure the points. Rink two comfortably despatched their opposition, but rink three was a closer affair with Arrow needing three off the last end, but with only two shots gained saw Frys take all 10 points from the 61-30 win. The weeks leading up to the end of the season saw Frys win against Yate B and Avonmouth

and lose to Severnvale in the Bristol and District League and taking on a strong Purnell side in the semi-finals of Somerset Bowls Association Wedmore Plate, losing 52-102. Frys Captain Roger Loader said after the game: “Frys had a good day but were beaten by a very good Purnells team.” Frys have also brought the Alsop Shield back to Somerdale after claiming a 91-65 victory over Keynsham at the Memorial Park on August 7 in their annual competition.

Patrick clocks up 30 hours of croquet

A local croquet player has broken his own record for the longest time spent continuously playing the game. Patrick Knight, of Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club, was on the croquet lawn for an impressive 30 hours, beating his own previous record of 24 hours. Patrick began his challenge at 1pm on August 6, playing throughout the night under spotlights while a stream of fellow club members joined in to

keynshamvoice

play a game during his 30-hour stint. Hearing about the attempt, players from other clubs also visited to take part, including two brothers from Nailsea who joined in at 3am. With just a few short “comfort breaks” and his meals delivered to him, Patrick beat his target and raised money for his club through sponsorship, earning a well-deserved rest. To find out more about croquet and the club, call Mo Boys on 01225 708540 or Ros Key Pugh on 01225 427525.
