4 I Love Stock Island
Welcome to the 2022 I Love Stock Island Festival. Thanks for crossing the bridge and coming over to “our” side. Whether you’re here to stay, or just for the day, we’re glad you’re here, and we can’t wait to show you everything we love about Stock Island. It’s a rich and rugged slice of paradise that we’re proud to celebrate. Key West’s northeasterly neighbor hasn’t grown as quickly and unrecognizably as the nearby Southernmost City, and that’s just fine with us. This is a place all its own, with a hard-working history, authentic flavors and an optimistic future. This festival celebrates it all. Created in 2016 as an extension of the I Love Stock Island initiative, the festival showcases the food, fishing industry and flourishing art scene found here. It was created by business owners and residents as a grassroots effort to make Stock Island a better place to live, work and visit while protecting its most precious assets. Our working waterfront is the backbone of Florida’s seafood industry, and in turn, its restaurants. The fresh shrimp and spiny lobster found on most menus in the Florida Keys start here on Stock Island, where large parcels of valuable land are still dedicated to lobster and stone crab traps despite developers’ insatiable eyes. Our art studios are as eclectic as the painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, woodworkers and muralists who flourish in some of the last affordable workspaces around. And Stock Island’s restaurant renaissance is luring more and more people over that bridge every day and evening for unexpectedly upscale cuisine, flavorful food trucks and casual Cuban sandwich shops. Even as Stock Island matures, with the addition of new art studios, restaurants, marinas, hotels and housing, the bountiful shrimping fleet, repair shops and boat yards remain essential to one of the hardest-working waterfronts in the world. Thank you for being here. Make yourself comfortable. We love Stock Island. You will, too. Mandy Miles Editor, Key West Weekly

Remember when we couldn’t buy booze in Key West before noon on Sunday? We went to Stock Island. For Sunday boat trips, champagne brunches, and ill-advised Saturday nights that got away from us. We went to Stock Island. When we needed damage estimates for fender benders and diesel engine repairs, we went to Stock Island. We still do. Remember when the Coral Isle Bar offered “free beer…tomorrow” for decades? And when Ocean’s Edge Resort was Oceanside Marina? Remember the Sailfish Restaurant, and the Hickory House? Lunch at the Rusty Anchor? Buying burlap sacks of shrimp right off the dock for a significant discount? Plenty of folks also recall the dog track and drive-in theater. We’ve watched Stock Island change, as all things do. But it hasn’t yet succumbed to the temptations that trouble its neighbor. Stock Island does things differently. Always has. It has a gritty determination. A sense of itself, pride in its place. It acknowledges the value of its authenticity. The island doesn’t strive to be Key West, but rather celebrates the distinctions. It embraces its industrious identity and unrefined elements, its lobster buoys, rubber boots and trap yards, where the smell of fish smells like money. Stock Island has chosen shrimp boats over spring breakers. It’s an essential provider for Florida’s seafood industry, and offers 6 I Love Stock Island

affordable studio spaces for working artists. It’s also being constantly enhanced by a culinary creativity that elevates the local catch and celebrates local resources, while giving intrepid foodies the thrill of “being in the know” about hard-to-find places. Stock Island’s culinary evolution and its identity as a destination, a reason to come across the bridge from Key West, started years ago with Bobby Mongelli’s launch of Hogfish Bar & Grill and Roostica Wood-Fire Pizzeria. Mongelli also created the I Love Stock Island Initiative, which spawned this festival to make the island a better place to live and work. Stock Island has struck a balance between working waterfront and megayacht marinas. But the community stands at a crucial crossroads. Today’s decisions will define its character and determine its future. It must hold on and hold out. Residents and representatives must carefully consider thoughtful improvements with responsibility and restraint. They must protect the people who call it home. Preserve the parts that set it apart, so Stock Island can still be its steadfast self.

The secret’s out, and when you find it the first time, you’ll be back. The Docks Restaurant & Raw Bar is Stock Island’s newest out-of-the-way, in-the-know spot for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The Docks, which opened March 14, is at 6840 Front St., literally on the docks overlooking the island’s shrimp boat fleet and stunning sunset views. It’s the brainchild of business partners Ryan Shapiro, Ian Bires, Mikey Peterson and Matt Cohen, who is also the executive chef. Shapiro and Bires had worked together in 2010 at a former Key West restaurant. Then Bires moved to Lake Tahoe, California for a few years. But in 2018, he said, Shapiro asked if he was interested in starting a seafood restaurant. “We wanted to bring back locally sourced fish and ingredients while being mindful of the next generation and offering a healthier, non-processed way of eating,” said Bires, who’s originally from Philadelphia. The cool-looking interior of the restaurant is modern and industrial — an ode to the working waterfront that surrounds and sustains the restaurant. Cohen has assembled an artistic menu that tastes as good as it looks. Honestly. The Docks’ “sharing plates” include the wildly popular Figs in a Blanket. What can possibly go wrong with brie, honey, sage and puff pastry?
10 I Love Stock Island
The Tuna Carpaccio Pizza can’t be skipped. The Lobster Rangoon is crisp, fresh and packed with lobster meat. The Drunken Scallops float in their own pretty seashell among serrano, lime, cilantro and tequila while the Risotto Balls combine mozzarella, basil and meat sauce. (Chef Cohen grows his own basil and herbs right outside the restaurant.) In addition to the sharing plates, The Docks serves lunch and dinner daily. Happy hour features $5 drafts and $7 apps Monday through Thursday. Who else makes a cheeseburger with pancetta and white cheddar? Or a “Philly” with fresh, blackened snapper, provolone, onions and peppers on a true Amoroso roll. (If you know Philly cheesesteaks, you know the roll is crucial.) For dinner, start with their Keys Fresh Seafood Chowder, a creamy combination of local fresh seafood; the Encrusted Beet Salad with goat cheese or the Artichoke Hearts salad with red pepper and romaine. The Local Sauteed Snapper with a Key lime beurre blanc is hugely popular, along with the Seafood Scampi and Seafood Cauliflower Bake, made with the day’s fresh catch, plus lobster and shrimp. The Docks is open seven days a week, serving lunch from noon to 4 p.m., happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and dinner 4 to 9:30 p.m. Outdoor seating is coming soon. The bridge that connects Stock Island and neighboring Key West will be renamed this summer for Cheryl Cates, who worked tirelessly to bridge gaps among all Florida Keys families and communities. “Cheryl H. Cates elegantly built bridges between people and organizations to achieve community goals. She championed the cause of improving the lives of children, and worked for decades to enhance the quality of life for all in the City of Key West,” states the proposal to rename the bridge, which was submitted to the state for approval by Key West businessmen Peter Batty and Jim Gilleran. Cheryl Cates lost her battle with COVID in December 2020 shortly after her husband and high school sweetheart Craig Cates was reelected to the Monroe County commission. Craig Cates was also Key West’s mayor for nine years. 18 I Love Stock Island
The Cow Key Bridge that connects Stock Island and Key West will be renamed the Cheryl Cates Memorial Bridge in July 2022. MANDY MILES/Keys Weekly
A dedication ceremony is tentatively scheduled for July 26, when a new sign will identify the Cheryl Cates Memorial Bridge over Cow Key Channel, Craig Cates said recently. “It’s an incredible honor to Cheryl and our family to have her recognized for everything she has done for the community she loved so much,” Craig Cates said. “We are so grateful, and Cheryl would always say how much she enjoyed ‘connecting the dots and building bridges’ between people who need help and people who can help.” Cheryl Cates moved to Key West when she was 2 and married Craig Cates in September 1971. One was rarely seen without the other. They raised three daughters, Tam-
my, Nicole and Crystal, and shared four grandchildren, Taylor, Riley, Trevor and Andrew. Cheryl and Craig owned several businesses in Key West, including Cates Automotive and Napa Auto Parts. Cheryl was also a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Knight Gardner Realty. “Her vibrant presence lit up any room she entered. Cheryl was a fierce champion and advocate for those in need on her beloved island. She was involved in many organizations and spearheaded numerous fundraisers for people and causes. Her benevolence and compassion were infectious, and she used her influence and connections to make her island home a better place,” states a tribute to Cheryl upon her passing.

There’s a Sacred Space on Stock Island, not the type with pews and prayers, per se, but one of whimsy, welcome and women. The all-female artists’ collective that opened in August 2020 is owned by artists Barb Sage and Lucy Hawk, who welcome visitors to their working studios and gallery at 5700 4th St. Wednesday through Sunday. The artistic owners and their gallery also support and represent the work of 15 other local, female artists who specialize in everything from handmade jewelry and sea glass sculpture to paintings, poured resin sculpture, pottery, photography, intricate paper-cutting and fiber art. One visit to Sacred Space shows visitors a color-drenched world in which they want to live.
20 I Love Stock Island
“I sell both the original papercuttings and prints of each original in various sizes,” said Hawk, who also has created a series of colorfully ornate mandalas. “It’s so important for an artist who’s just starting out to have an opportunity to show their work without getting gouged from the start,” said Gage, whose bold Whimsy Key West patterns brighten everything from roller skates and mannequins to lamps, wooden signs and stationery. Sacred Space also offers handson creative classes throughout the year, and Meet the Maker art openings that introduce visitors to the people behind the paintbrush or pallet knife. The gallery has an eclectic lineup of classes and Meet the Maker events planned for this year’s I Love Stock Island festival, featuring Karen Moore of Zen Jewelry, Tammy of TJC Pottery, Jasmine Jones of Ocean Blue Studios, Jessica of Sinking Sun Photo, Tena of Cooper Esposito Bags, Kristen Norman’s Hot Girl Summer series.
Classes throughout June will teach participants to create a ceramic set of dipping bowls; a mermaid & mahi painted mugs; beaded bracelet sets and quality cutting boards adorned with poured colorful ocean waves. For more information and to register for a class, visit sacredspacekeywest.com.
