KEY BEAUTY What Colour is Right for Me?
By Tracy, Hair Magic
Do you think the colour of your hair makes the most of you? As we get older, the pigments in our hair and skin decrease and change. 10 years ago you maybe had dark hair and when the grey hairs start to show, you put a colour on to cover them. 10 years on you will find that not only have you got a lot more grey hair, but you may not have noticed that the pigmentation in your skin has also changed. Talking as a very experienced hairdresser, I have found that eight out of ten of my clients have changed colour over the years because of the advice I give them. For instance, if you are dying your hair brown by putting a few lighter streaks through, maybe you will find that caramel or medium blonde looks softer and brings out the colouring in your eyes. It will also make your skin look warmer and with more colour. The same goes for those of you with blonde hair. If you have always had ash or matt colours, you will normally look better with gold, pearl, caramel or a very light blonde. If you would like more advice on colouring, please contact Tracy at Hair Magic. Consultations are free.

KEY BEAUTY Introducing the Raindrop Technique now available at MBA
The Raindrop Technique is an amazing body treatment, using aromatherapy essential oils, but it is not a traditional aromatherapy massage. The technique starts by treating the feet with Vita Flex (Tibetan reflexology). Then the treatment continues on the client’s back, and the pure essential oils are ‘dropped’ like raindrops up the spinal area which helps with structural alignment. It is designed to bring balance to the body with its relaxing and mild application. It will help align the energy centres and release them if blocked, but without using hard pressure or trying to force the body to change. Medical grade, therapeutic essential oils from Young Living are applied in a particular sequence, starting with a blend called Valor. Valor oxygenates the blood cells preparing them for the oils that are to follow. The treatment then continues with the essential oils of oregano, thyme, cypress, wintergreen, marjoram, peppermint, a blend called Aroma Seize and finally Valor again. A vegetable blend oil complex is also used throughout the treatment to dilute the essential oils. The treatment then continues by using a warm compress over the back which helps the oils

to penetrate and a neck stretch, a cranial hold and a neck flex completes the treatment. Most people would agree that massage is soothing, relaxing and pleasurable, but Raindrop Technique is unquestionably far superior as it combines essential oils with special massage techniques to add greater therapeutic benefits and the results are amazing. If you suffer with any kind of muscular pain, the Raindrop technique will certainly help. The majority of the oils are anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-bacterial, anti-viral and of course anti-septic. It is a fantastic treatment for sciatica or any kind of muscular problems. There is also an ‘emotional release’ Raindrop, which uses different essential oils. Marbella Beauty Academy offers the Raindrop as treatment in the salon, and also runs short courses for therapists to learn a new treatment or for anyone interested in using essential oils to reduce pain. Anyone can do the Raindrop Technique as it is not a massage and really easy to learn. Please call for more details.

KEY HEALTH The Dry Socket (Alveolar Osteitis) Approximately 3 to 5 % of people will develop a dry socket after a dental extraction. A dry socket is a painful condition which can occur after a tooth extraction and usually presents 2/3 days after an extraction. In some cases it can cause quite severe pain which can radiate to the ear and along the jaws. The good news is it is treatable but it will take a lot longer for the wound to heal. What is a Dry Socket? The socket is the hole in the bone from where the tooth was removed. Normally the socket fills with blood and a clot forms which protects the bone and nerve endings in the jaw. Sometimes the clot can become dislodged or dissolves 2 to 3 days after the extraction. That leaves the bone and nerve endings exposed to air, food and liquids. This can lead to infection and severe pain in the jaw. Who is likely to get a Dry Socket? Some people are more likely to get a dry socket, this includes people who: 1. Smoke 2. Have poor oral hygiene 3. Use the oral contraceptive pill 4. Have a history of dry sockets 5. Exercise vigorously within a few hours of the extraction 6. Rinse and spit a lot after the extraction on the same day Symptoms: A dry looking socket with no visible blood clot, just bone visible. Pain usually starts 2/3 days post operatively, throbbing in the socket, pain spreading along the jaw and to the ear. Usually you get bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth. Treatment: 1. Firstly you need pain relief, use a non steroidal anti inflam-

matory pain reliever such as Ibuprofen (Ibuprofeno). Don’t use aspirin as it thins the blood and causes bleeding. 2. Your dentist will need to cleanse the socket and remove any debris, then fill the socket with a medicated dressing or gel to promote healing. This will need to be changed every few days. 3. Normally it would be wise to take antibiotics to prevent infection getting into the bone. 4. Rinse out 2/3 times daily with warm saltwater or Corsodyl mouthwash. Any mouthwash with Chlorhexidine (Corsodyl) is anti bacterial. It may take 2/3 weeks to heal fully. Prevention: 1. Stop smoking before the extraction, and don’t smoke for 6/12 hours after treatment. 2. Don’t drink or rinse within 2/3 hours 3. Control any bleeding with a gauze pack. Apply firm pressure to the extraction site. 4. Don’t exercise for 12 hours after treatment 5. Start gentle mouth washing 1 day after 6. Eat soft foods for 2/3 days 7. Don’t drink alcohol that day (it raises the blood pressure) Summary: Smoking is a big factor in the formation of a dry socket. The longer you can go without smoking, the less likely you are to get a dry socket. The oestrogen in the oral contraceptive also reduces clot formation. It is better to plan extractions after the 21st day of the menstrual cycle. Careful management of the socket and the use of a mouthwash 24 hours postoperatively will reduce the chances of getting a dry socket. If the socket bleeds, apply a gauze pack to the site with firm pressure until bleeding stops. Don’t keep spitting and rinsing - this will only wash out the clot.

KEY HEALTH Aesthetic Surgery Aftercare As a qualified Manual Lymphatic Drainage specialist (Vodder trained) I am used to treating patients with Lymphodema using the approved MLD manual technique. Recently I have purchased the Havimat 200 oscillating machine and this allows me to work with patients with a wide variety of conditions and even assist those that are due to undergo surgery. The Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation can be used for a variety of treatments and recent research has demonstrated that it can be extremely beneficial for patients due to undergo surgery. This technique can be used from day 1 post operatively, which means that patients can recover in a far quicker timescale than has previously been possible. Bruising, swelling and pain is reduced as the daily treatment works on shuffling and transporting the excess inflammatory matter (which is in evidence after surgery) to the lymph system for removal. Once the area is drained it is unable to regenerate. During the treatment, electrostatic pulses create pleasant, deeply effective oscillations in the skin, connective tissue, subcutaneous fatty tissue, muscles, blood and lymph vessels. In contrast to externally applied mechanical forms of therapy, the therapeutic effect of Deep Oscillation occurs in the tissue itself, penetrating the entire tissue down to 8-12cms. It is es-

pecially gentle, making it an unmatched treatment option for fresh trauma, post operative treatment, acute pain and the area around open wounds. Speaking from personal experience following a major surgery less than 3 months ago, I found the Deep Oscillation to be fantastic in helping with pain relief and bruising. My recovery time was reduced by half and within 2 weeks of my operation I was bruise free! Highly recommended in Pre operative patients, the Deep Oscillations possess anti-oedema, lymph drainage, anti-fibrosis and detoxifying properties. It prepares the tissue for any invasive procedure, and allows for quicker and less painful recovery time. Often in elective surgeries patients are looking for instant results and the Hivamat can help to achieve this. For further information and to discuss the benefits of MLD and the Hivamat 200 call Patricia on 666 170 868 or pop in and see her either Tuesday afternoons or Friday mornings at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas Tel: 952 835 776. Editor’s note. I myself will be undergoing major surgery in August and have already started pre-operative sessions. We will bring you results of the Hivamat 200 treatments in the next issue of the magazine.

KEY HEALTH Tips for the Summer Sunglasses – Most of you have probably read in the press about the potentials of buying cheap, copy sunglasses and the harm they can do to your eyes because they are made without the correct UV protection. We recommend that you buy your sunglasses from a reputable optician or outlet where all sunglasses sold, including designer models, will have proper certification. Sometimes it is worth paying that little bit extra to ensure that you and your family are protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Mosquitoes – Every day you see ex-pats and tourists walking about with horrendous mosquito bites. There are various after bite creams and potions available at all chemists. We recommend Anthisan and After Bite but the pharmacy staff will always be on hand to advise you. As you know, prevention is better than cure. We do not particularly like plug-ins

(a repellant you plug in to a socket to kill mosquitoes) as we feel that these are not particularly helpful for children, the elderly and people suffering from asthma related illnesses. Again, your pharmacy is on hand to recommend preventatives, however from personal experience and we would recommend that you take odourless garlic capsules on a daily basis. These seem to give off something in your skin that repels the mosquitoes. Alternatively ask for a repellant spray from your pharmacist. If you live here, you may find that mosquito screens or net curtains will stop the mozzies from coming into your house in the first place but if you are sitting on a terrace anywhere in the evenings, this is when they bite so a repellant spray on your skin is good and works well as do the Citronella yellow candles that you can light if you are spending an evening outdoors. The candles are available at the ironmongers and most supermarkets.

KEY HEALTH Talk Therapy for Children and Young People Talk therapy and group therapy is a useful intervention for children and young people suffering with psychological, emotional difficulties and/or diagnosed with mental health issues – 1-to-1 talk therapy and group therapy are both recommended as a helpful intervention for young people when they may seem to be struggling with the process of growing up and dealing with life. Having the opportunity to be listened to, heard, supported and understood when one may be feeling lost, can be highly beneficial. Being a young person in today’s society can be difficult and can highlight issues for both them and their parents. Having the chance to talk to a professional who is purely there to learn how it feels to be that person, understand what life feels like through their eyes, offer a safe, nonjudgmental and confidential space for them to explore, feel and talk, can help young people (of all ages) start to understand themselves better and learn how to deal with their feelings in different ways. Parents and other adults in a young person’s life are doing the best they know how, yet sometimes verbal or non–verbal messages can be misunderstood and this in turn can influence and imprint the child’s footprints of development. Young people can also be easily influenced by their peers and the need to fit in and be liked can also have a large effect on how they feel and perceive themselves. This can be experienced by a young person as negative and sometimes fearful, leaving them to feel isolated, alone and different. Young people yearn for protection, love, understanding and safe boundaries even though this may often appear the last thing they desire! Often this yearn can be hugely contradicted by young people’s external be-
By David Donaldson, Clinica Medicare
haviours. This can potentially make being a parent even harder as parents may feel isolated as well as confused, believing they understood the needs of their child, yet the child’s behaviour suggests otherwise. Talk therapy and group therapy can offer people of all ages a relationship that can help an individual to get to know the ‘real’ them. The authenticity of each human being, their reality and their life experiences are validated by the therapist. This allows them to find their own answers and identity whilst gaining self confidence and belief. Therapy offers people the chance to work through any emotional pain they are feeling, so they can start to live their life, rather than simply surviving. Feeling more whole as a person, learning healthier tools to live, learning how to be comfortable with one’s self and in relationships, are just some of the aims of therapy. Feeling connected to the “self” and others is a key social need in life. Therapy can offer young people the chance to experience this, working towards fulfillment of their unique potential. The essential element to any therapeutic relationship is the relationship between client and therapist. The therapist must be able to offer all the necessary elements required, an empathic, safe, non-judgmental, caring, honest, transparent and confidential environment, this is where growth can begin and changes can be made. Gemma Wood is a Psychotherapist and Counselor who specializes in young adults and adolescents with on-going emotional and mental health issues. Gemma has a special interest in eating disorders and addiction. For more information contact Medilink on 952 933 876.

KEY HEALTH New Body I have now had my first course of treatment to try and reduce the cellulite and put some sort of shape into my bingo wings and upper thighs. These areas, especially as we mature, seem almost impossible to tame. When I was a bit bigger, all my short sleeved clothes were so uncomfortably tight and now that I have lost some weight, they just do not look nice. I know that this is a very long road for me, but I am pleased to report that after a short amount of time and with no effort on my part, I have lost a centimeter from each of the upper arms as well as from the biggest part of the thighs which is a great start. In addition to the Tei System I wrote about in the Key News

section in the last issue, Linn of New Body, has also been working with the Ultrasound programme as well to break down some of the excess fat before it is trimmed by the Tei Passive Gym System. By the end of my current sessions I was able to tolerate a much higher frequency than at the start and I am hoping that after my recovery I will be able to continue with this treatment and eventually feel comfortable wearing a little strappy number! Above are before and after photos and also one that shows that I now have some form of muscle definement in my upper arms. This is a very pleasant treatment as is already beginning to show results.

It can be a toe nail paint, or a soak and little rub with a nail file. You may also often see colourful nails with the soles of the feet dry and full or hard skin. One must understand how important proper foot care is, especially if you are Diabetic or have other skin complaints. The older we get, the more our feet need careful attention. KEY HEALTH What Happens During the Physical Examination In this edition we will see what happens during the Physical Examination which follows the differential questioning/ history taking when you first visit an osteopath (which was discussed in the previous edition). Once the osteopath has a “working diagnosis” or a possible reason for the cause of your pain or discomfort from questioning you about it, the osteopath will then need to prove or disprove to themselves the possible diagnosis by examining you physically. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and perform a simple series of movements whilst standing. The osteopath will be looking for things like one shoulder higher than the other or collapsed arches in your feet, rotation through your spine, more muscle bulk on one side than the other, looking to see if you have scoliosis (lateral curves) of the spine and the general anterior/posterior angles and position of your neck and back in relation to each other and how far you can turn and so on. Once the patient is lying down, the osteopath will then use a highly developed sense of touch called palpation to identify any points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body and examine things like your neck, joints and back whilst you’re not weight bearing. Various tests may be done to check your range of passive joint movement (i.e. the osteopath moves your arm without you using your muscles to check if the problem could be muscular or in the actual joint itself) or reflexes and power/ sensation testing to check your neural system to see whether the problem is specific to one nerve or a group of nerves or coming from your spine or even from the higher centres of your brain. Things like your blood pressure, pulse and heart sounds and anything like varicose veins and cold hands and feet could be noted to help in diagnosis. Inflammation often gives off a lot of heat and so helps to locate the problem as will tight or contracted musculature around the area of pain. Often the problem is not where the actual pain is! At this point an osteopath will then normally discuss his findings with the patient with a reasonable explanation (diagnosis) as to why he/she would benefit from treatment and an idea of how many treatments it may take and what sort of level of daily function can be recovered (prognosis). It may be that the patient is referred for further tests at this
By Chris Howard
point such as x rays to confirm or help with diagnosis for the benefit/safety of both the patient and the osteopath. If a series of treatments is agreed, the osteopath will normally have a wide range of approaches available from cranio-sacral, massage, articulation and thrust to name but a few to alleviate the pain. Advice on posture at work and at home, number of pillows, phone answering, exercise and sports do’s and don’ts and self medication/icing and so on, forms part of the treatment. In the next issue we will look at what type of things an osteopath treats, what is arthritis and can it be helped by treatment and maybe what is the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor!

KEY FEATURE Ask Joy
By Joy Fahey
In this issue Joy deals with another common problem here on the coast – some pointers on what to do if you are having difficulty in making ends meet. Dear Joy Please can you help? Like many people, I would think, I am struggling with money. I am a 62 year old woman living on the coast and retired here four years ago. I have my pension and I had some savings but it has become increasingly more difficult to make ends meet. Everything seems to be going up and my money is going down. I feel very desperate as I really don’t want to go back to the UK, besides which I doubt if I could sell my property in this present market, I would really appreciate some advice. Barbara Dear Barbara Thank you for your letter and I certainly understand your predicament. And yes many people are finding themselves in a similar situation, however there are solutions. Let’s first look at some practical ideas. If you haven’t already, write down everything you need to pay for, your overheads i.e., your community fees, electricity, water etc. Include what you spend on food and necessities. Then write down your monthly income, pension, interest that you get on your savings etc. This gives you a clearer idea of where your money is ‘actually’ going and helps clarify your actual spending so you have a realistic picture of what’s happening and stops any confusion. See what you can cut back on, what your essentials are and what are luxuries. Seek some advice, for example, see if you can release some money on your property, there are different schemes which are very helpful, i.e. equity release programs for example, you can do some research and get some comparisons from different companies. Ask friends if they can recommend a good company. Another idea would be to have a lodger to give you some extra cash. Keep thinking out of the box. You can gain a lot of help by searching the internet. As we said before, many people are in the same situation and thus there
20
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
is a lot of help out there. You are still young and even though you ‘thought’ you were retired you don’t have to be! There are many things you can do. One lady I helped in the same position as you, did some retraining and is now working as a part time carer earning very good money whilst doing something really satisfying. There are lots of different opportunities once you start looking. When we find ourselves in any difficult situation it is trying to tell us something, and if we listen carefully we really can find the answer. Life is for learning and growing as a person, when we face difficulties we are forced to have a rethink. If you continually focus on the bad things and the difficulties you will tend to get more of the same. Start to look at all the good things you have and be very grateful for those things rather than what you don’t have. It changes how you feel and opens up new opportunities and possibilities for positive things to happen. Take a breath and feel gratitude that you are young enough and capable of turning this around. Our thoughts become things, if we say we CAN, we’re right. Equally if we say we can’t, we’re right! You want to stay in Spain, great. Then be determined to find a way of doing that. Believe that you can, start thinking that you can and you will, you’ll be surprised what will happen! Ask yourself the reason WHY you want to stay, and let that be your motivation, focus, take some action, write it down, pin it on your fridge door so it constantly reminds you and enjoy your new adventure. If you go to my website www.joyfahey.com you can download my free eBook which is full of constructive help and inspirations to Awaken Your Amazing Self. Good Luck and let me know how you get on. Love Joy If would like Joy to help you to solve a problem and you don’t mind sharing it with our readers (name withheld), then please contact Joy and you could find your question dealt with in future issues of Key to Mijas Costa.

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Donnas del Mundo I recently attended a superb art exhibition with a difference, held in the attractive setting of the Casino Marbella, created by the popular, talented pair of artists from Marbella, Ose del Sol, the painter of this particular exhibition, and Mugge Fischer who prepared and created as part of their joint project from Grupo Artenovum, the first class presentation we all enjoyed. The unusual theme of the exhibition was a series of paintings in honour of women entilted Donnas del Mundo, inspired by fascinating women the artists have known in this cosmopolitan area of Marbella, Southern Spain. The style is based on the Donna Lisa Gherardini by Leonardo Da Vinci, using pictorial styles employed throughout history and the concept of the these paintings is the representation of the magic of the Donnas del Mundo all special, enigmatic and unique women. Even more fascinating is that each beautiful painting of the Donnas is accompanied by a story of the selected Donna, written by chosen writers and friends who have been inspired by the duos’ ideas. I’m happy to say that I was one of those selected, and my story was of the lovely Donna De Copenhague! Donna de Copenhague She came in the darkness of the night, her stunning red hair flowing spectacularly in the air. Unable to resist her invisible power, I overcame any reserva-

tions I had at the arrival of this vision of mysterious loveliness, to awaken me from my sleep. I called out to her; she smiled and took my hand firmly in hers. There was no need for words, as she communicated to me through my mind. Leading me behind her, we rose gently upwards into the cool night air. I was surprised and astonished as I was rising higher, but had no fear at all. Exhilarated beyond compare, and feeling as light as a feather; my thoughts were no longer that of a normal person, but I was now a part of a universal world of understanding. I saw the countryside far below me and then the outline of a coastline became visible, as the bright moonlight cast its powerful rays across the wide seascape. I sensed we were close to Zealand, the island of the ancient Vikings, which according to the Norse mythology was created by the goddess Gefion. Lying alone on the banks of the sea; with the sounds of the water flooding my mind and the taste of salt carried by the waves pervading the air, a faint memory of this exact moment from aeons ago, swiftly came to me and vanished into the Nordic ether. I felt a long tender kiss on my lips and without opening my eyes, I whispered. “Who are you?” “Son of Tuscany, do you not recall your long lost love? La Donna de Copenhague?” www.marbellamarbella.es www.donnasdelmundo.com

KEY FEATURE Looking Back over the Past Year It’s so nice to take a moment to sit and just look back on the past year and see all the amazing things that have happened in my life. Even the predictions on 2012 over the past 5 years have been somewhat haunting, so now we are here, we can look at it all now. We’re halfway through 2012; we’re all here and life is not that bad. It could be a lot worse, but we’re still here and working on being loving, caring and trusting that it’s all going to be OK. We all know deep down that even with all the upheaval, in the end it’s all going to work out. This past year for me has been a roller coaster of adventure, from starting my own miracles and empowerment circle to touring Barcelona, Madrid and Rome. My feet haven’t touched the ground. I’ve had the pleasure of doing psychic readings for many celebrities around the world, including India, Barbados, Australia, New York, Hollywood and, of course, working in my beautiful little psychic studio, on top of our magical mountain in the very beautiful Mijas Pueblo. When you least expect it, magic happens, such as on the day I had a knock on my door. ITV 3 had heard about my work and asked me if I would be kind enough to do a reading for a celebrity - somebody who needed a little help, they said. And would I mind if the TV cameras rolled at the same time as I gave her a reading and healing….a fly on the wall documentary. Umm, I thought. I asked if this was truly about helping this celebrity. If so, then I would be happy to read for them. They replied, ‘Yes, she loves psychic readings and regularly has them. She finds they help her so much along her path and keep her strong. It would really help.’ So I agreed, and this bubbly person came up the stairs with a baseball cap on. She walked into the room and I gave her a hug. She sat down and looked a little nervous. I thought I recognised the face, but I wasn’t sure who she was. Of course, that didn’t matter at all; we are all the same inside - famous or not. I began the reading. I placed my hand a few inches over her hand and began tuning into her energy. It was a beauti-

ful, gentle reading: the messages were flowing, and were all about giving her the strength to keep climbing her mountain. Despite all that she had been through, I could see how she was, and she had a loving family. I could feel that she had worked extremely hard to be a better person. I explained her longing for love and saw someone who would care for her; someone who would stand by her side as a pillar of strength. I saw a man. I felt him close - closer than she could imagine, and she received beautiful, kind, gentle information which would help her on her journey. At the end of the reading, I gave her some pure energy healing. We cuddled and said our goodbyes, but not before the two camera women and sound man insisted they too needed a reading! So I did. It was only afterwards that I realised who it was. She was Kerry Katona, once the winner of ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.’ We have stayed friends ever since. To top all this off, I had the privilege and pleasure of being asked to write a chapter in one of the next biggest self-help books of 2012, ‘The Light.’ Not only am I humbled by the fact that I was asked to contribute to this book, but also to have a chapter next to some of the most amazing authors in the world. Watch out for it coming out in September. As I write to all you beautiful friends, I am about to set off on my psychic tour of Barcelona, and with my new Miracles and Empowerment circle which just keeps growing and growing, and on July 26th I will have hosted this with an amazing powerful Shaman at the Beatriz Palace Spa. With a smile in my heart, I know that 2012 has been the most miraculous year ever for me, and knowing it all started right here in my first-ever column “The Accidental Psychic.” My wish for all of you is that you find your own path of enlightened love and happiness, and if you cannot see this path, remember miracles happen every day. Stay true to your heart: then and only then can you always look back and say, ‘I did my best.’ From my heart to yours: keep shining!

ASTROLOGY Coming towards the end of summer we are still enjoying (or perhaps enduring!) some pretty high temperatures and it’s true to say the heat has definitely been on this year in more ways than one! Although 2012 has seen many challenges so far, with likely a few more to come, there have been some bright and positive phases too… for instance on 17th August at 17.55pm (Spanish time) there is a New Moon in the sign of Leo. New Moons are all about seeding something new in the life, and in the sign of Leo this could be a creative talent or idea that you have an opportunity to bring to fruition over the next few months. At the time of the New Moon it’s a good idea to write down what you would like to manifest in your life… that way those precious ideas won’t get lost among the thousands of other thoughts that go through our heads every day! It seems appropriate then for this month’s article to feature the Moon… what it means in our lives and how it affects us. More and more people are coming round to the idea that astrology does work… we have only to consider the Moon’s vibrational gravity, how it rules the ebb and flow of the ocean’s tides and how for thousands of years it has ruled cycles in the lives of humans, to realise its effect on Earth. Also well documented are the ominous and auspicious periods that follow a New or Full Moon, especially when either is eclipsed.
‘Aim for the Moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars’…! Poets and songwriters have been writing about the Moon since way back in time … ‘Fly me to the Moon and let me play among the stars’ sang Frank Sinatra and ‘When the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars’ from the musical Hair are two famous songs that make reference to the Moon. A kind of mysticism and secretive air about the Moon has touched the minds and hearts of people throughout the ages and it’s no different today. The Moon in astrology rules the sign of Cancer and represents our emotions, instincts, habits, reactions, our inner self and deepest personal
needs. It has a responsive and receptive nature and is associated with the ‘mother’ or feminine energy that is present in everyone… for whichever sign and house the moon appears in the birth chart is where we look to be nurtured. As we observe the Moon circling our Sun in a kind of protective manner reflecting the Sun’s light, so the Moon’s position in our birth chart shows how we protect and make ourselves feel secure, comfortable, and safe. Questions like how do you instinctively react or respond to problems, or what do you feel you need for a sense of security can be answered by looking at a birth chart to see which astrological sign and house the Moon was in at the time of birth. A significant aspect in astrology is between the Sun and Moon in a person’s birth chart; for example if the Sun is making a challenging aspect to the Moon in an individual’s chart then a struggle between that person’s will and their emotions will invariably occur. When this happens they must learn to let go of the struggle by using the intellect and view the situation from a higher perspective; to observe without judgment what is really going on! When we understand the essence of the Moon, we’re no longer ‘in the dark’ so to speak and this knowledge can give us a valuable insight into all of our other relationships. Traditional astrology considers the Moon to be a symbolic signifier of change, fickleness and impressionability and this is easy to understand when we see how it moves and changes in the sky with varying appearances between cycles every month. These fluctuations can be likened to our own emotions which similarly fluctuate depending on the situation in which we find ourselves. In ancient times moon cycles were used as a calendar to mark the passage of time and significant full and new moons would signal the arrival of a specific and important event in the year. Today we know more about the Moon’s surface than ever before since astronauts have analysed its structure and composition. However I doubt its deepest secrets have been exposed, because regardless of physical make-up the Moon still holds a sense of magic and mystery for most of us… and I suspect it will continue to do so for a very long time! KEY FEATURE Voice of the Valleys Popular international tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan releases albums to aid Spanish and Welsh cancer charities From the Welsh valleys comes a sound that has nothing at all to do with the corporate mechanisations of the music industry. Here music is not just a business but a way of life – originally a way of expressing faith and later a vital part in the everyday existence of close-knit mining communities. From their ranks sprang forth a choral tradition that not only remains as strong as ever, but continues to be built on the most emotive of all instruments: the voice. Though he now divides his time between Spain and Wales, Steve is a son of that land and that tradition. Born into the unique musical setting of the Rhondda Valley and gifted with a natural talent, he has gone on to express himself through music wherever he finds himself, be it at the workingman’s club his parents ran, on the stage in the West End, or as a tenor equally at home at an intimate Marbella gathering or a large international concert. “A love of music is something universal, shared by many of us,” says the soft-spoken Welshman, “but my own origins in the Welsh valleys is something that puts a very specific and profound stamp on me, both as a vocalist and a person. Though I sing in a variety of styles and cover quite a wide range of musical genres it is something I carry with me regardless.” Surrounded not just by the music but also by the tight-knit spirit of the valleys, he learned to read music and would take the microphone and sing to an empty room at his parents’ club after the crowds had gone – imagining that one day it would be a concert hall packed with people. What started in the workingman’s club and as part of the school brass band eventually grew into a passion that saw him realise many of his musical dreams and ambitions. “I have performed in the West End and at concert halls in front of thousands of people, but one of the greatest pleasures was being invited to be the guest soloist of Welsh choirs touring Spain.” In spite of his success as a tenor and the feedback he gets from the audience when singing Italian classics such as Nessun Dorma as well as contemporary songs, the choral music of his youth continues to have a special place in Steve’s heart. From the heart He attributes much of the current resurgence in its popularity to the fact that the music of the valleys comes straight from the heart. “It’s great to see the growing popularity of choirs, from Only Men Aloud and very recently Only Boys Aloud on Britain’s Got Talent to the Military Wives Choir. I think they touch people because it is such an honest medium of expression. Without orchestras or technical wizardry, relying on your voice alone, there is nowhere to hide, and no better way to give expression to feelings.” The musical tradition of the valleys is clearly about more than musicality or entertainment alone, having played such an important social role for so long. “It is about feelings, experiences and how a community pulls together. The Rhondda Valley was a very giving environment. When someone needed help people rallied around, and this is perhaps the central message of our music as well.” It is certainly a philosophy that continues in his own life, for regard-

less of punishing schedules or other demands on him, Steve has always been more than willing to make his time and talents available to charities both locally and abroad. This includes performing regularly at events such as the Butterfly Ball at the Puente Romano Hotel, held in support of the Rhys Daniels Trust Charity, and the UNESCO-accredited Children for Peace Charity, but also giving the proceeds of album sales to charity. The latter include recordings on behalf of fundraising for victims of the Haiti earthquake, as well as a special re-release of his album To Where You Are, in aid of the Cudeca Cancer Hospice. In My Father’s Footsteps The fight against cancer and the care for people suffering from this debilitating disease is one that is particularly close to his heart. “It’s a cruel disease that rips the heart out of families, including mine. There is no discrimination; it can hit anyone and at any age. Anything that can be done by any of us to raise money to improve the odds, whether in terms of treatment or palliative care, is vitally important.” The recent loss of his father to cancer has reinforced his commitment to this goal, and inspired the recording of an album in his memory. “I had a very close bond with my father, and I think I owe much of my love of music to him,” says Steve. “He was a singer and bass guitarist in the 60s band The Zendars, who supported The Who, so when I was growing up there was always an eclectic mix of music around me.” It is this very personal soundtrack to an era that he is recording in his own style on In My Father’s Footsteps, adding some of his own contemporary favourites to create a highly original and complimentary songbook. “The album will include a selection of my father’s favourites, like Let It Be Me (The Everly Brothers); Make it with You (Bread) and Vincent (Don McLean), along with classic Italian songs such as Torna a Surriento and Canto Della Terra, right up to Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars.” Recorded at the famous Pop Factory in the Rhondda and featuring his warm voice and intonation, the album was released in July. Steve is giving all proceeds of In My Father’s Footsteps to The Cudeca Hospice and Welsh cancer charity Tenovus – proving once more how far the voice of the valleys carries the message of compassion. KEY SPORTS Euro 2012 Roundup
By Steve Billingham
Flops of the Tournament JetroWillems of Holland did very little in 90 minutes against Germany – there were calls from the pundits for him to be substituted at half time. Deployed as a left back – not a particularly attacking one but he didn’t seem to be getting stuck in especially either. AidenMcGeady down the left wing for Ireland didn’t really figure against Croatia, even less so against Spain. One decent ball was put in, in 180 minutes. Sean St Ledger of Leicester City (oioi) headed in Ireland’s goal against Croatia, the first by a Leicester City player in a major tournament. The long haired and bearded Georgios Samaras did nothing in Greece’s first 180 minutes. Better against Russia, he put a decent cross in and actually had a shot at goal. Improbably, Greece won by one goal to nil to qualify for the quarter finals – against Germany. Samaras scored a good poacher’s goal against Germany, poking home a Salpidas cross. Bob Hoskins look alike Salpidas also converted a penalty to reduce the arrears to 2-4. In hindsight he probably should have had the penalty against Poland as well. Saves Of The Tournament (in no particular order) Andreas Isaaksson England v Sweden Isaaksson dived to his right and kept out a powerful John Terry header. AndriyPyatov England v Ukraine Dived back to palm away a fierce Ashley Cole left footed half volley. Pyatov, the Ukraine fourth choice couldn’t catch a cold but this, ironically, was one of the saves of the tournament. Joe Har England v France Alou Diarra’s powerful close range header was acrobatically kept out with great reactions. Gianluigi Buffon Italy v England A terrific reflex save with a typically strong left hand to deny Glen Johnson. A chance which a striker would have probably put away. RuiPatricio Portugal v Spain Palmed away a close range Iniesta volley to keep Portugal in match in extra time. Great save from Alonso in shoot-out as well. Goals of the Tournament (Again, in no particular order) Andrei Shevchenko Ukraine v Sweden Having already scored from a flying header, he cleverly escaped his marker with a darting run and headed in at the near post for his second and a cracker. Andrea Pirlo Italy v Croatia A cracking 20 yard free kick which curled over the wall and dipped inside the near post with some pace. Mario Balotelli Italy v Rep. Ireland Acrobatic scissor kick from edge of area which flew in. Also scored a 20 yard top corner ‘screamer’ following a Montolivo long ball in semi final against Germany. ZlatanIbrahimovic A flying volley from the edge of the area off a Larssen cross.

Theo Walcott England v Sweden Arguably Theo Walcott’s best game for his country yet, scoring with a dipping lob from 20 yards and assisting another with a pacey run through the gap and ball in for Danny Welbeck to flick home. Mario Gomez Germany v Holland Gomez took a through ball, turned neatly flicking away from the defender and fired in. Stars of the Tournament Raketic (Croatia) Ibrahimovic (Sweden) Shevchenko (Ukraine) Ronaldo (Portugal) Pirlo (Italy) M Balotelli (Italy) Terry (England) Iniesta (Spain) Fascinating Euro Fact In the 1968 tournament Italy made it through to the final on the toss of a coin after their semi final with the Soviet Union ended in a draw. Observations I couldn’t help but notice that the ball had gone out of play in several matches and play continued with no throw in to the other side being given. I also noticed the vast array of colours on football boots – pinks, lime greens, turquoises, more than before. It has come a long way since the days of Trevor Brooking’s ‘Dunlop Roma’ moulded studs in Italia ’80 and Spain ’82. The Secrets Safe with Terry England went out on penalties in the quarter final after drawing 0-0. Pirlo ran the show in the middle of the park, Balotelli had a good match also. Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck missed chances. England defended tightly but Wayne Rooney was disappointing (although he actually sang the National Anthem all the way through before the match.) When ‘crunch time’ came, England could just not deliver. If scoring goals was as frequent as spitting, they would have won the tournament. Why didn’t another senior member such as John Terry step up to take a penalty? Or ‘striker’ Andy Carroll? Italy striker Balotelli soon stepped up for his. Pirlo’s penalty was cool personified, chipping down the middle. Perhaps Defoe would have made a difference. Pirlo was having such a stormer that Phil Jones on him wouldn’t have made a difference. Or would it? Viva España! Spain retained the European Championship trophy with a comfortable 4-0 win over Italy in the final. Fernando Torres won the golden boot with 3 goals, David Villa missed the tournament through injury and a striker of Fernando Llorente’s quality was left unused on the bench. Comparisons with Brazil’s World Cup winning team of 1970 were made.

KEY FEATURE Round up of Charity Events Here is a small selection of the numerous charity events that have been held over the last couple of months. As tough as things are here on the Costa del Sol, people are still digging into their pockets to help others less fortunate. 16th June Atletico Las Chapas, the new children’s football coaching club, held its first charity event and raised 1400 Euros for the orphans at Ciudad del Los Niños in Malaga. Everyone had a great time. Congratulations to Sally Kitchen for organising this event. 24th June Calahonda Pet Dog School held their first dog show and raised 600 Euros for FAMA, one of the many animal charities on the Costa del Sol. Despite the heat, everyone had a great day out. Pictured is the dog that jumped the highest.
Also one very special boy who won most handsome dog taking it easy at home after the event! Well done Gary Joynson for putting this all together. 21st July Mitchell Huth Appeal to help fund treatment for young Mitchell who is suffering from Neuroblastoma Cancer. Emma Nicholson works tirelessly for a different deserving cause each year. This year it was to raise funds for treatment for little Mitchell Huth. The White Ball was held at El Chaparral Golf and Country Club. Great entertainment all evening, especially from the renowned “Pam” pictured above. A terrific amount, 2300 Euros was raised including auction and raffle prizes donated by local business. Another great event organized by Emma this year. Emma would like to thank all those who participated and donated.

KEY FEATURE Tea at Sam’s
By Sue Cross
In this issue we welcome Sue Cross, who lives locally. We feature a short biography and a synopsis of the book. We will feature excerpts in the next two issues of Key to Mijas Costa. Biography Born on the Wirral, I attended a Grammar School and then a convent. It was during my time at the convent that I played hooky and enjoyed a forbidden trip to the Cavern Club in search of my heroes – The Beatles. After relocating to Cheltenham, in the Cotswolds, I became a fashion buyer, married young and later moved with my husband and baby to live as a colonial wife in the tropical paradise of Mauritius. Then followed ten years in Hong Kong interspersed with a spell in Australia. With a desire to have my own business, I first opened a beauty salon and then realised a dream – to launch my own skin care range, Susan Molyneux. Due to hard work and lots of grace, the range became one of the top in its field. I eventually decided to retire from the competitive beauty world in search of a quieter life and moved to the Mijas Costa, an area that I love, and which inspired me to start writing. Widely travelled, I have visited more than fifty countries and like to incorporate some of my experiences abroad into my writing. Tea at Sam’s is my debut novel and takes us all over the world, ending in Spain. It is available on Amazon as a book or a download. Please check out my website www.suecross.com. Synopsis All that Celine, a girl without guile, wants from life is to marry and have a family but she soon awakens from her dream of marital bliss. While living in Amsterdam, she loses the two men that she has always loved and trusted, one suddenly and the other gradually. Her father dies of a stroke and, upon her return from the funeral in England, she discovers that her husband, James, is not the person that she believed him to be and has a dark secret. She returns

to England alone to make sense of her life and, it is during this brief sojourn, that she has a chance meeting with her only other love, Nick. Before marrying James, Nick was removed from her life through a series of misunderstandings, lies and betrayals. Vulnerable, she thinks she still loves Nick, but his feelings are not reciprocated. Confusion is soon replaced with hope as James is offered a job in Hong Kong and begs Celine to forgive him. Hoping that she can salvage her marriage, she flies out East to join him with a fresh determination to realize her dreams and to tell James of her pregnancy. But through many twists and turns, her life does not follow a smooth course. Returning to England with her self-esteem in tatters, Celine decides to revive a dormant ambition to paint. It is through this life-changing hobby that she emerges from a chrysalis of despair and finds tender wings of confidence. She also encounters two friends at the art class that she has joined. Samantha, a whole-food chef, and Kristin, a beauty therapist, become her trusted confidantes and mentors. In the changing times of the late sixties and early seventies, when women’s lives were changing dramatically, the three friends find that they have much in common, not least that they were all reluctant expatriate wives in the British colonies. Tea at Sam’s becomes a lifeline as they meet regularly. Kristin and Samantha encourage Celine to persevere and pursue her goals. So, with trepidation she takes a trip to southern Spain where she falls in love with the country as well as her painting tutor. There is a double celebration in Andalucia as, during the fiesta, an unexpected guest appears. The story begins in Amsterdam and then moves to various British colonies. A roller coaster of betrayal, adversity and friendship set in Hong Kong, Mauritius, Australia and England before it finally ends in Spain. It is here that the intertwining of lives brings rewards and restoration.

KEY PETS All Pet Owners Must Register These notes are from the Estepona Ayuntamiento: 1. In most regions in Spain the Ayuntamiento now requires all dog owners to register their pet, irrespective of breed or size. The application form is free and to register is free. I strongly recommend you check your local Ayuntamiento. Pet owners are obliged to keep pets in good hygienic sanitary conditions. The owner is responsible for any damage or injury caused to people, objects or public areas including beaches. 2. You are not allowed to abandon pets in the streets or on any close premises. 3. All pets are obliged by law to be registered in the Municipal Registry (Registro Municipal de Animales de Compania del Ayuntamiento). Owners must keep and show to the Authorities when required this Registration Certificate and the yearly anti-rabies treatment certificate. 4. In public places all dogs need to be on a leash and dogs over 20 kg, need a muzzle as well. 5. Dog fouling is not allowed on streets, sidewalks or other public areas. Should this occur the owner must have a plastic bag to collect the excrements. 6. It is absoluely forbidden to feed any animal on the streets as well as to leave food or any container to the same end. Pet Owners ignoring these laws based on the current legal system will be prosecuted under the disciplinary proceedings following the Ley 11/2003 de 24 de Noviembre, de Proteccion de Animales. KEY PETS Costs Reduced for Leishmaniosis Prevention Programme
Leishmaniosis We understand that due to poor take up of the injection programme from Vibrac for prevention of the spread of Leishmaniosis (sand fly disease) some veterinary clinics have reduced costs for the initial start up test and injection programme from approximately 250 euros to approximately 130 euros. As we already explained, this programme involves initial testing to prove the animal is currently clear of the infection, if clear then an injection programme covering three injections carried out at monthly intervals. It must be considered that there is still no cure for this disease and prevention methods are few. In addition, the volume of infection spreading is on the increase annually. The treatment to keep the animal alive is also very expensive and must be administered on a monthly basis for the rest of their lives. It should be noted that animals who have been regularly wormed and properly fed respond much better to treatment than animals who have been neglected, thus have a much easier time when on treatment. Feeding Dogs in Summer Once again the summer is with us and we must ensure that animals always have a fresh supply of cool water and

enough shaded areas while outside. If it is possible, food is best given in the evening as if given in the heat of the day, it maybe left uneaten or eaten and vomited up. Either way, it is not a good procedure. Pay particular attention when travelling with animals in a car as it is very dangerous. Travelling in the Car with Dogs Dogs do not travel well in a car in summer conditions in Spain. Many dogs die on an annual basis due to owners not understanding fully the problems involved. Even people who you would think would know better, have lost very good dogs due to lack of care and attention, Cleaning a Dog’s Face Eye areas should be cleaned on a regular basis as matter can build up and become very difficult to remove if left. You don’t need any fancy expensive wipes - a normal muslin and warm water will suffice. A quick rub around the mouth area, nose and ears will do no harm. Have a good summer and take proper care of yourselves and your animals.

KEY PETS Knowing What Your Dog Groomer Can Offer A lot of people think that all the groomer can offer is bathing and grooming of their dogs, therefore many people with short haired dogs never use a groomer. A qualified groomer can play an important part in monitoring your dog’s all over health, and by using the same groomer over a period of time they will often be able to spot potential problems. So, let’s run through a typical grooming session: 1) Ears - cleaning, checking for infections and removing excess hair. 2) Anal Glands - emptying them and checking for any infections, sores or tumours. 3) Paws and Toe Nails - trimming, looking for foreign objects like grass seeds or pebbles. Oiling pads, reporting of cracked pads, infections etc. 4) Eyes - trimming hair, checking eye health. 5) Mouth - full mouth check, reporting any problems with teeth or gums. 6) Skin - probably the best help. Reporting on skin, advising products to help with all types of skin problems. The groomer will also use a shampoo best suited to each skin type. I will also remove any ticks, fleas, grass seeds and advise you if treatment is needed. I also feel that any lumps or bumps I find should be noted in my book and recorded
38

so I am aware to check them each time the dog comes and report any changes. Any lump that concerns me will be reported to the owner straight away. So as you can see, even those short haired breeds can benefit from going to a groomer and a wash and blow dry can cost very little if no haircut is needed. I charge no more for all the above extras as they are all included in the price. My top tip is to look after your dog’s paws and pads. Like us, problems with feet can affect the whole body and a dog with sore pads will change the way he walks causing all kinds of joint problems in the rest of the body. Keep paws and pads clean, free of hair and foreign objects. Oil (I use pure cocoa butter as its safe to lick) and treat any cracks or infections. Keep toe nails trimmed and lastly remember in this hot weather their pads will burn very quickly on all types of floors that have been in direct contact with the sun. In fact avoid walking in the mid day sun for this reason. KEY MOTOR Motoring Tips Flip Flops – The flip flop and many derivatives of it have been a firm footwear favourite for holiday makers and people that live in the sun. We have heard recently that our friends in blue or green are now fining drivers who wear flip flops or footwear with no back strap. This is a hefty 150 Euro on the spot fine, so ladies especially and gents be careful, after all let’s be honest they are not the safest things to wear whilst driving, including a motorbike or scooter. Alchohol – We have recently seen here in the press that the boys in blue or green have a new drinking policy which has been passed down from central government. This
clearly states that being over the limit or under the limit is a complete irrelevance as there is now a zero tolerance for drinking and driving. So think about if for a moment, zero tolerance. The odd swift half or glass of wine will put you in danger of being fined, banned and whatever else they can throw at you. Heavy drinkers beware – you may find that after being out on the razzle one night you will still clearly be over the limit the next morning, so you have been warned folks. ZERO TOLERANCE to alcohol. We also understand that there is a method of checking at the roadside whether you have taken any form of drugs. So again be aware and do not drive whilst under the influence.

KEY FEATURE Changes to Spanish Healthcare System British pensioners living in Spain are now required to pay towards the cost of their prescriptions under changes to the public healthcare system introduced by the Spanish government. One of the changes means that all state pensioners who are registered for healthcare in Spain as residents must now pay a percentage towards the cost of their medicines. The contribution for state pensioners has been set at 10% of the cost, with a cap of as low as eight euros per month depending on personal income. How much a pensioner must pay depends on personal circumstances. If you need more information you can contact your local health service provider directly, who should be able to give you detailed information on the prescription charges. This system of ‘co-payment’ - paying a percentage of the total cost of medicines - is common among European countries and has been applied to those classed as ‘active’ in Spain, i.e. those normally considered to be of workingage, for some time. Under European Union regulations, the UK pays Spain an average annual cost to provide healthcare for its pensioners. This entitles UK pensioners who are resident in Spain and registered with an S1/E121 form to the same access to state healthcare as would be provided to a Spanish pensioner. As a result, any healthcare changes that are applicable to Spanish state pensioners are equally applicable to all UK state pensioners, as well as those from other EU/EEA countries. These include any costs that someone may be charged, including those for prescriptions. The system for co-payment is being managed by each individual autonomous community, so the process may differ slightly between regions. You can find out more information and check for future updates on changes on public healthcare provision on the UKinSpain website at http://ukinspain. fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/living-in-spain/ access-healthcare/healthcare/healthcare-updates. British Embassy Warns Homeowners to Ensure they Rent Properties in Accordance with Spanish Law Homeowners who rent out their properties to holidaymakers are being warned they could face huge fines unless they comply with Spanish law. The British Embassy has become aware of a number of cases where homeowners have been fined up to 30,000 Euros for letting properties without the correct permits. The Embassy has published advice for homeowners who

rent out their properties or are considering doing so, which can be found on the UKinSpain website. Short-term Lets The regulations on letting tourist apartments (apartamentos turísticos) and holiday homes (viviendas vacacionales) vary by region. If you are planning on making a financial return by renting out your existing property, or buying one to let, you are recommended to seek independent legal advice and check the local licensing laws with your local town hall (Ayuntamiento). This is particularly important in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands where the rental of holiday properties on a short-term basis is strictly regulated. The authorities in these areas are cracking down on homeowners who rent out their properties to tourists (particularly through online adverts) without complying with Spanish law. If you own or are planning to buy an apartment which is part of a Comunidad de Propietarios (Committees of property owners who are responsible for the management of communal areas of apartment buildings/complexes), you should also check whether there are any rules that prohibit or restrict short-term letting. Long-term Lets Owners who rent out properties on a long-term basis are generally not required to apply for a special licence. However, it is worth seeking professional advice to make sure that you are complying with Spanish legislation and that you are using the correct rental contract. There are different types of contracts depending on how long the property is being let for, such as arriendos de vivienda which are for a minimum of five years, and arriendos de temporada which are generally for one year or less. You can get copies of these contracts from tobacconists (estancos). Taxes Owners of properties should also be aware that whether or not you are resident in Spain, you will need to declare rental income to the Spanish tax authorities. Homeowners may wish to seek advice from a professional tax adviser (asesor/gestor). Managing a Property Rental You may want to consider hiring a Spanish letting agent to assist with finding tenants, drawing up rental contracts and managing the property on your behalf.

KEY FINANCE More Generous QROPS Options Now Available, But Not For Much Longer... Stephen Ward was a member of the UK Government’s Pensions Industry Working Group advising HMRC on the pensions’ legislation changes which introduced Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) in the 2006 Finance Act. He is also the author of the definitive textbook on pension taxation, “Tolley’s Pensions Taxation 2011-12” In the last month or so a number of new options have become available which gives expats with UK pension funds the widest, most generous choice of benefit provision they have ever had, even prior to the legislative changes introduced in April of this year. Time is limited More restrictions are likely to be introduced by HMRC in December which will be effective from 6 Aril 2013. As the typical transfer of a UK pension fund takes three months from beginning to end there may not be a huge amount of time to take advantage of all the options New Restrictions? What we are expecting is a restriction on the jurisdictions where you will be able to transfer your UK pension fund. EU law requires freedom of movement of capital within the EU so it would be pretty difficult for HMRC to try and prevent transfers to QROPS in EU jurisdictions. But this would, all the same, be a major constraint on advisers as there are very few EU jurisdictions where there is a developed market

for transfers to QROPS. Perhaps just Malta at the current time. Other countries, like New Zealand are simply much more flexible - which is why they may soon be soon attacked by HMRC as permitted QROPS jurisdictions. Exceptional cash withdrawal terms continue We expect one European scheme to continue to be able to accept your transferred fund, and, amazingly they permit you to take the entire value out as a lump sum when you have reached age 55, and have been non-resident for 5 complete and consecutive tax years. A little tax of between 2.9% and a maximum of 4.8% seems a small price to pay for that extra flexibility. New Zealand schemes currently allow exceptionally high lump sums and a much higher level of income withdrawals than any EU jurisdiction. So act now before it is too late... If you would like to hear how a switch to a QROPS would be of benefit to you, contact our Regional Director, Brian Brannan on 610 926 335, or email: bbrannan@prempensions.com, www.prempensions.com. KEY FINANCE Just Another Day Do things really change or is it just another day/week with similar news and concerns surrounding the Eurozone? With headlines such as “Global economy slows” “Spain’s bonds yields reach highs” “Greece implementing austerity measures” etc then that’s why I ask the question. The news we are all reading has not changed much, the crisis is still around us and credit rating agencies are still doing their best to destroy what little is left of Eurozone countries’ credit rating and along the way knock confidence in the common currency. There is no doubt that times are difficult and Eurozone leaders are constantly trying to find a solution however, each day seems to bring along a set of obstacles to overcome but there have been some positives and its certainly worth reflecting upon these. Greece has a new government and is seeking to reach an agreement of its budget deficit, Spain has been authorised to receive 30bn euros to recapitalise their banks, the Spanish economic minister has recently stated there are no plans to close any Spanish Banks and Spain’s exports rose by 6.2%. It’s fortunate for both the USA and the UK that “headlines”

The recent scandal over the LIBOR rate fixing and of course another well know bank facing record fines due to money laundering breaches in the USA. With the economy slowing in the states we are interested to see how the budget deficit will be reduced and what additional action The Federal Reserve will take. With a strong £, exports from the UK also become a problem and maybe the Bank of England will look to reduce interest rates and add to the £50bn extra money printing in an attempt to slightly weaken the £, but with consumer demand falling across the Eurozone manufacturing globally may see a slowdown. With all the uncertainty it’s a good time to make the most of your currency transfer as the Euro is at a three and a half year low against the pound so if you are transferring £’s, talk to Moneycorp ,our preferred currency partner. KEY LAW Be Aware of the Additional Obligations You May Face When You Buy a Property in a Community Usually, the buyer checks with the seller and the administration of the community that there are no outstanding community fees. To be even more secure, the buyer should usually ask for a certificate from the administration proving that all the payments of the fees are up to date. Apart from this investigation, nobody seem to check with the administrator if there are any possible extra payments that the community might have to face in future and consequently the new owner could be responsible for these according to his quota co-efficient. According to the LPH (Horizontal Property Law) the ordinary or extraordinary fees should be paid by the owners of the properties at the time the fees are issued and sent to the owners to be paid. Article 9.1.e) of the horizontal property law establishes the obligation of the owner to pay the community fees, and the article 21.1 of the same law says: “Mentioned duties on sections e) and f) from clause 9th should be accomplished by the house or premises proprietor at the time and form determined by the Meeting.” Having said this, when the AGM does not establish anything in particular about the date on which the fees have to be paid, we should apply the article Art. 1.113 of the Civil Code, and we will consider that the fees should be paid at the time they are notified to the owners. This means that, no matter if the payments you have to make now result from a community problem when your seller was the owner, because the only important thing is to know is who is the owner at the time the community ask for the fees. With the purchase, the seller will transfer to you, not only the property but also the rights and obligations from the share in the community, which means that the new owner will get the benefit of any income in favour of the community and in the same way, will have to pay for every possible debt the community could have to face, no matter if the income or the expenses come from an incident dated before you obtained the ownership of the property. There are many possible situations. Let’s imagine that the community is fined as a consequence of some irregularities; there is an accident and the victim considers it is the community’s fault; there is a court case and the community
By Jose Luis Navarro, Intercala’s Solicitor and Property Administrator
could end up paying the costs etc. In all these cases, supposing you get the ownership of the property during the time the fine is executed against the community; it is declared the responsibility of the community for the accident; or the court case is finished with the obligation of the community to pay the cost or compensations, you will be the one to pay for these problems because you will be the owner when the community sends the fees to pay these extraordinary costs. Be aware that sometimes this extra cost could be very high and you would have nothing to claim back from your seller. Taking this into consideration, take proper advice before buying any property in a community.

This is superb value. Choose starters from Houmous, Tsaziki, Taramasalata all home-made and freshly prepared served with pitta bread. We really enjoyed the Lamb Kebab which was absolutely delicious, taken from the choice cut of the leg and slowly grilled until tender and tasty. Mousakka was also tried and tested as well as Dolmades. For dessert we had a great portion of home-made Baklava. It was not overly sweet. Cannot believe that the three course menu was only 10 Euros. Terrific value for money. Of course we have visited more than once!!! There is something for all tastes at Cravings. Fellini’s, the well-known Italian Restaurant at the Aztec Country Club in Riviera del Sol, has been a favourite haunt for many years and indeed celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The emphasis is on a friendly, family service with reasonable prices but retaining a high standard of cuisine. Summer opening hours are now from 12.00 to 12.00. On the menu at lunchtime are Tapas, Pizza and Pasta etc. In the evenings Fellini’s retains its extensive Italian menu of family favourites such as pastas, pizzas, meat and seafood dishes cooked to perfection all of which is available as take away as well. Our particular favourites from the extensive menu are Minestrone Soup, Antipasto or Spaghetti Pil Pil for starters, Vegetable Risotto, Veal Milanese or any of the delicious pastas or pizzas for main course to name but a few. I am also rather partial to the Veal Saltimbocca. We are now also hooked on Fellini’s Pizzas which are authentic, thin and crispy and we believe the best in the area. There is also a good selection of home-made desserts and a fine wine list including favourite Italian wines. Fellini’s welcomes family dining with several suitable items on the menu for children. Why not celebrate your birthday, Engagement or other occasion at Fellini’s? Buffet or Menu from as little as 12 Euros a head. We hope you and your family have many enjoyable evenings at Fellini’s. CERVECERIA TIPI TAPA We are pleased to welcome Cerveceria Tipi Tapa to the magazine. Tipi Tapa is a fine example of a typically Spanish bar/restaurant. Tipi Tapa can be found at the Miramar end of Mijas Costa – come off at the first entrance to Fuengirola past the Sohail Castle. You will find the Mosque on your right and a few metres past that there is a roundabout with the Cayetano supermarket on it. Take a left there into C/Malaga and you will find Cerveceria Tipi Tapa a few metres down the road on the right. Cerveceria Tipi Tapa has a selection of fine meats from the BBQ all served with potatoes and salad, such as Mixed Grill for two people, other fine cuts of steak, pork or various meat skewers, a selection of fish etc. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it also serves a full range of the ever popular Spanish “tapas”, small portions either for a snack or to pick and mix with your friends. Tapas are served all day so Tipi Tapa is also an ideal place to eat if you are a little outside normal dining hours. A selection from the tapas menu includes favourites such as Russian Salad and other salad variations, a good variety of “embutidos”, different types of Spanish sausage, hams and Salamis from around the country, prawn and fish dishes, meatballs, croquettes, several vegetarian options such as Tortilla, Caramelised Goat’s Cheese with Crispy Almonds, Brie Blini with Cranberry Jam, Aubergine with Cane Sugar and many, many more both for meat and fish lovers and vegetarians too. Tipi Tapa is an ideal place to try Spanish favourites. We are looking forward to visiting when I am back on my feet again.

KEY MOTOR Mid-season Break for Supermotoland The Supermotoland team have a few weeks off now before racing commences again in September. But the break in the racing calendar doesn’t mean a relaxing holiday for the team by the swimming pool, as they are continuing to test and develop their SML450 supermoto bikes over the summer period to start the second half of the season in top form. The first half of the season has been phenomenal with both of the team’s riders, Anthony and Mat Ford-Dunn rarely finishing off the podium and both brothers running strongly in their respective championships. Between the two brothers they have racked up an astounding 9 race wins, as well as 13 second positions and a further 8 third positions. Anthony is currently 2nd in the Catalan championship and 4th in the Spanish championship, with older brother Mat currently 2nd in the SM30 Catalan championship and also 2nd in the SM30 Spanish championship. The first half of the season has not been without difficulties with both riders complaining of a lack of front tyre grip due to suspension problems and a disastrous round of the Spanish championship at Villarcayo, Burgos where Anthony
suffered a front tyre puncture in both of his races and Mat Crashed heavily in practice, requiring stitches in his arm before he was able to take part in the day’s races. It goes to show how hard these two are pushing themselves when even with these problems Anthony managed to finish in both his races, 5th and 6th and Mat brought it home in 3rd and 6th despite a further crash in the second race. Finally the team seem to be making headway with their front suspension problems and new adjustable triple clamps from Italy are being tested to try and give more front end grip. ‘The new triple clamps allow us to move the front wheel further forward or back depending on circuit conditions, and this gives us more front end grip when we most need it on slippery tracks. Hopefully with the improvements that this will give us we shall both be able to push even harder and fight for the championships’ said Anthony, when asked about the performance of the new triple clamps. The Team are next in action at the Mora d’ebre circuit in Catalunya on the 16th September for the 5th round of the Catalan championship. Further race reports and updates can be found on the team’s website at www.supermotoland.com.
