SHALLOM

TA N G K I L I S A N

Branding Shallom Samuel Harmany Tangkilisan is a drummer specialized in jazz and gospel genre. His talent is well known in many gigs, both in Jakarta and Bandung. He plays with passion and wonder. Shallom talks and communicate when he beats the drum. There is always a story behind his beats. Due to his passion, there are some brand image impressions we want to show, which are masculinity and classiness. Therefore, his ability and styling holds the main key for the graphic design. The graphic asset was taken from the closure form of a circle inside a square by applying the Gestalt theory. Circle talks much in his graphic design since it is the basic form of a drum. The closure form then developed into a modular system to create a repetitive and intriguing visual assets.

^ The logo was made structurally using a basic grid system. Which then applied and transformed into series of pattern, used to build a classy decorative graphic system. Developing the concept from scratch to final design was a very knowledgeable experience. Trial and error and senior guidance i had, both technically and by concept, had given me new valuable experience about branding and graphic design.

Layout

The layout was made by exploring grid system and typography knowledge. Grids were divided into 3 big columns and 3 big rows. Within these grids, there was only one typeface. This typeface have several treatments such as bold headlines, regular align left body texts and an additional italic caption with smaller text size for pictures. The layout was constructed by considering audience’s reading flow, so that it was comfortable to read with the correct hierarchy.

DIVINE APPOINTMENT

Wedding invitation This project is one of my personal favorite. Since I’m very interested in weddings and also, it was a friend’s wedding. It felt different when you actually know the person very well which make it much more emotional. The identity was made by putting the holy, intimate and elegant mood from the wedding itself. All the illustration in the invitation set is watercolor illustrated to give an intimate and more “human-like” impression. The set contains one main invitation, a directional map wrapped with a string and a small detail of cotton flower card containing their hopes and prayers.

WOH

BALI

Packaging Located in the island of the gods, Bali. This snack had not had a proper name until deep research and ‘WOH’ is chosen. WOH is derived from a Balinese word means fruit. The name WOH itself seems to hold a deep cultural value and literally describe the product’s main ingredient at the same time.

^ The graphic assets used in this design was taken from the ornaments carved on Balinese alumunium baskets. It’s called patra punggel. Patra punggel is the plants inspired basic ornaments among all ornaments levels in Bali. It is then simplified and combined with a modern twist to create a fresh yet cultural visual assets. Beside the ornaments, these vibrant colors were also chosen as it gives fresh and fruity impression.

^ This is the secondary packaging for WOH. It is a traditional alumunium basket with sleeve. The design adjust it’s form and also apply visual assets from the basket to form unity.

SEMAR

Watercolor illustration Semar is a popular character among Javanese stories. He plays an important role as the oldest in the Punakawans. Semar was told as an advisor with a humorous character. He’s visually not old nor young, not a female nor a male, not happy and not sad, therefore he is the symbol of life perfection and wisdom in Java. This project tries to illustrate Semar in wayang version and the interpret version depending on my personal hand drawn styling.

KINERUKU

Watercolor illustration Kineruku is a private library and book store which provide refrences about books, musics and films. This library is a cozy and warm place where many students often gather and spend most of their time studying, reading or just simply enjoying the atmosphere. The feeling i felt in Kineruku, leads me to an idea to translate it into an image.

SEHANGAT AKHIR

Watercolor illustration & Copperplate calligraphy As one of our final assignment in learning basic typography, students were asked to make a hand lettering copperplate calligraphy with supporting visual elements to complete the message we had chosen. I came up with a paper cut watercolor illustration to give a warm and deep relationship impression within the quote meaning. Hand skill writing helps to increase our sensitivity about basic typography such as kerning, leading and tracking without any digital help. Beside the calligraphy, i also put another common typeface that matches the artwork itself.

THE MOUSEDEER AND

THE BOAR

Digital illustration for Visual story telling After reading various kinds of Indonesian folklores, it is finally decided to choose the mousedeer story to illustrate. There are many versions telling mousedeer as the main character, but i chose the unpopular story to make it popular. The project main goal is to translate a whole text into a story telling image. Based on the story timeline, it is then made in a circular flow. Start from the top and end by the center of the circle. Techniques i did to show 2D image movements are repetitive forms, before-after condition, more body parts, color change as the time change and movements stages.

^ As the boar is the king of the jungle, he became mad that the mousedeer dare to challenge him. The boar then stomped his feet to the ground showing anger while the mousedeer keep teasing him.

^ The boar then ram into the mousedeer many times. The mousedeer frequently falling but then he get up again and again.

^ The end of the story, the mousedeer won with his strong steel mask he had worn the whole battle. The boar lost with blood shed all over his body and the whole jungle admit mousedeer as the new king.

JUST KEEP SWIMMING

Digital illustration for Game interface Just Keep Swimming... Just Keep Swimming is a summer theme mobile game interface developed for 8 years old girls. The colors and visual assets come together to make a fun and exciting impression for players.

To win this game, player have to collect as many rubber ducks as possible, if you hit other objects such as pool floats, points will be reduced from your save. Other than that, there is also a time limit to give a slight tension in the game.

DAGO

DA I RY SCHOOL VISIT

Digital illustration for a Brand mascot Dago dairy is a local farm selling dairy products to many high qualified supermarkets. It was established since 2004 and managed by the farmer himself, Mark Hallet and Yanti. Beside selling dairy products, they also have an educational program such as farm school visit. In the school visit program, we came up with an idea of making a brand mascot to boost a children friendly atmosphere. After many considerations, the decision ends with a cow as the mascot. The cow’s name is Dago. He is a young, energetic and friendly character.

^ Dago is great friend to all the animals in Dago Dairy. He loves to play around and drinks milk. He is always full of curiosity and excitement for new adventure. Therefore, Dago will be a great friend for children to play in the farm and learn.

AVO

Digital illustration for Character design Character design can come from anything, even from daily objects around us. AVO is an avocado based form robot. Creating AVO started from a challenge by our lecturer. We were told to bring our favorite fruit which then surprisingly challenged to make a new character with it by using the matrix theory for character design. AVO’s existence purpose is to collect fallen avocadoes in it’s farm when harvest. It is well known as a kind hearted robot and a very helpful friend. AVO has three main abilities which are multifunctional hand, anti gravity force and anti gravity light.

^ AVO concept book was made in a more interactive way. It is a multifold brochure with 2 faces. The first one is about AVO’s history, facial expressions, appearance, anatomy, gestures and other additional details.

^ This is the second face of the brochure which is the cover. AVO didn’t end up just being a character, but it was then applied into a mobile game. AVO became the main character and work as a personal assitant for the player. The game’s purpose is to educate children about different kinds of fruits in a more imaginative way.
