The Time Is Right for Work Trucking Green With the price of oil again well above $100 per barrel and rising due to turmoil in supplier nations no one would have anticipated scant months ago, the national Truck Equipment Association seems to have had a crystal ball as it hosts its fourth Green Truck Summit, and the second co-organized with Calstart. Fleet operators no longer have just planet-saving for going green, as it’s clear that new technologies for saving fuel and allowing use of domestic alternatives, while

not at all cheap, now have a clear path for paying for themselves within the working lives of the people who make the decisions to buy them. Dozens of companies are promoting alternative fuel and fuel-saving hybrid and other technologies at this week’s Work Truck Show. Hybrid electrics, propane, lithium ion, natural gas, hydraulic hybrids, plug-ins... They’re all represented here. —more Green Truck Summit on pages 6-7

Hino’s Launching Its Hybrid Here The Prius of trucks? That may prove a little strong, but Toyota’s Hino Trucks is introducing a long-awaited hybrid truck here this afternoon. The dieselfueled Class 4/5 COE (cab-over-engine vehicle boasts an all-new design with a new and more powerful 4-cylinder J-Series engine of approximately 200 horsepower. Terex to Distribute Odyne Plug-In Hybrids up to 50% depending on application.” Terex is promoting its battery-driven HyPower aerial lift, designed for operators wishing to reduce engine idling at job sites. Although independent of the propulsion driveline, it can save a gallon of fuel per working hour, or from 600 to 1,000 gallons of fuel per year. The design employs lead acid batteries to power a hydraulic system developed in league with Parker Hannifin. The system charges overnight on standard 110volt, 20-amp power, or a five-minute engine-on recharge affords about 15 minutes of boom operating time. The two firms are sharing Booth 5157 in the Calstart Pavilion. Odyne aims its turnkey hybrid upfits at fleets with start-stop driving cycles and extended periods of jobsite idle time. Sales orders domestically are up substantially in 2011 and the agreement with Terex “is anticipated to significantly expand opportunities,” Odyne says, pegging the world market at 250,000 units per year for new and retrofit work trucks. Nick Cammisa of Terex demonstrates the battery-powered, “We believe that the work truck HyPower aerial lift at Booth 5157. GREEN TRUCK SUMMIT

Work Truck Operators Are Going Green as Sales Rebound Some 63% of operators say their green mandate comes principally through internal company initiatives rather than regulation or other influences, according to a recent fleet survey by the Green Truck Association, presented at the Green Truck Summit Monday by NTEA senior director of business development Doyle Sumrall. “Operators are not just purchasing to comply,” Sumrall said. Fuel is a significant cost driver for most operators and climbing fuel costs will continue as strong incentive to increase efficiency. Nearly two thirds of operators say they are making changes to specifications for vehicles to improve fuel efficiency, with idle reduction and weight saving most frequently cited. Compared to last year’s survey, weight reduction surged 20%, while improved aerodynamics is up 8%. After four years of steep declines, truck sales expanded in 2010, and are expected to continue growing at or above industr y norms for the next few years. With the increased sales comes more opportunity for fielding new technologies. All forms of alternative fuel vehicles are enjoying growth with CNG and LPG fleets climbing to approximately 50,000 and 40,000 trucks, respectively in 2010. And while much less prevalent, other technologies are growing at a much faster pace. For instance, the number of pure electric trucks in use is projected to triple this year from 200 to 600. Hydraulic Hybrids also are enjoying fast growth, climbing from 100 to more than 300 this year, according to Sumrall’s data. Sumrall also heads the Green Truck Association, founded last year as an NTEA ancillary division. Quallion is promoting its lithium ion idlereduction unit at Booth 5457 (see page 8).

System startup for Unison biomethane unit at Rodefeld Landfill in Wisconsin took place on Dec. 28.

Biomethane Takes to the Road Dubuque, Iowa-based Unison Technologies started up one of the nation’s few biomethanefor-vehicles project at the Rodefeld Landfill in Dane County, Wisc. late in December, company president Jan Scott reported at the Green Truck Summit here yesterday. The small-scale, dairy-based facility is designed to produce about 100 GGE (gasoline gallons equivalents) daily. In part because its use offsets emissions of methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, biomethane has often been described as the cleanest by far of all fuels. Biogas can be drawn from municipal waste, landfills, food or agricultural waste. For all of them the challenge is in the removal of moisture, carbon dioxide and other contaminants to make biomethane of a quality suitable for pipeline injection or vehicle use. Gas purification hardware for the Unison installation cost about eight times as much as the associated compressed natural gas fueling installation, Scott said. Tax regulations also favor the use of biogas to make electricity over upgrading to biomethane. Green Truck Summit organizer Calstart has been a long-time promoter of biomethane, hosting conferences on the fuel and tours of successful facilities as far afield as Sweden. Calstart helped write the grant applications for two projects out of five just proposed for a total of $26 million in California Energy Commission funding: CR&R Incorporated is to receive a proposed $4.5 million to apply anaerobic digestion to make

biomethane from municipal garbage in Perris (south of Riverside, Calif.). CR&R operates some 150 LNG and compressed natural gas trucks, but prefers pipeline injection for the Perris biomethane, with arrangements for fleets to buy the green fuel on an offset basis. Northstate Rendering is to receive just shy of $3.96 million in CEC grant money, plus $1,500,000 in loan funding with a $3,958,150 match, to construct an anaerobic digestion facility in Oroville, north of Sacramento. “We’re taking the more troublesome waste that Northstate Rendering takes in, mostly grease and food waste, and diverting that material to digesters and making it into CNG for Northstate to run its trucks,” says Brian Gannon, president of project partner BioGas Energy. Calstart is forming a Renewable Natural Gas Industry Action Group (RNG-IAG) to help advance the use of RNG-biomethane as a transportation fuel. The organization “wants to help this industry get the funds, recognition and support it needs,” says clean transportation solutions director Mike Ippoliti. “We see RNG as a win-win,” he says. “It takes waste streams and creates a fuel that displaces petroleum. It solves a problem while creating a solution. And it does this with proven technology, no breakthroughs needed, and is ready to scale-up today. “[California Air Resources Board] analysis has shown that RNG has the lowest greenhouse gas impact of any vehicle fuel they’ve examined,” Ippoliti says, “lower even than an EV running on California grid electricity.”

New Fuel Standards Expected in July, Burden Falls to OEMs With the burden for meeting new NHTSA/EPA fuel standards falling to OEMs, most fleet operators will primarily experience fuel savings and potentially a greater range of new vehicle options employing all electric, hybrid and alternative fuel technologies. With that powerful selling point, OEMs will be able to take advantage of advanced technology and innovation credits as they seek to bring their products into compliance with the new regulations. OEM representatives discussed strategies for meeting the new rules at the Green Truck Summit Monday, saying the early phases of implementation will not require radical new technology, but that meeting the standards devised for 2017 will force innovation throughout the drivetrain. With the comment period on the proposed rules now closed, industry expects the final rule to be released by NHTSA/EPA this July. And while details are being drafted, the broad framework calls for new standards for three categories

of heavy trucks: • For combination tractors, the agencies are proposing engine and vehicle standards that begin in the 2014 model year and achieve up to a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fuel consumption by 2018 model year. • For heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans, the agencies are proposing separate gasoline and diesel truck standards, which phase in starting in the 2014 model year and achieve up to a 10% reduction for gasoline vehicles and 15% reduction for diesel vehicles by 2018 model year. • For vocational vehicles, the agencies are proposing engine and vehicle standards starting in the 2014 model year which would achieve up to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 2018 model year. The new regulations were conceived with broad goals that go well beyond reducing vehicle emissions, according to National Highway Traffic and Safety Administrator David Strickland, who delivered the keynote address at the

Work is starting this week at Impco Automotive (Booth 718) in Union City, Ind. , on the Ohio border northeast of here, says INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield. (The Impco Automotive operation was formerly known as Productive Concepts,

Impco is using hardware from Arizona’s Campbell-Parnell for the first 98 of the propane Fords for INDOT. The vehicles are E-250s and F-350s, all with 5.4-liter engines, dating from 2002 to 2006. Campbell-Parnell has adaptive system that works via a vehicle’s original ECU, yet creates a fuel map for each individual cylinder, says co-owner Tom Campbell. INDOT is currently focusing on integrating the new propane fueling network with existing payment systems. The Alliance AutoGas stations will initially be for INDOT drivers only, but may later be opened to other fleets. It’s all being paid for with some $6.3 million of a $10.125 million Clean Cities ARRA grant 10

New Eagle for Taking Control Michigan’s New Eagle is promoting its wide expertise in controls for advanced technology vehicles at Booth 5165. The Ann Arbor firm, which recently moved into a new facility, provides both controllers for electric drive vehicles and the software necessary to design such products under the Mototron and MotoHawk brandnames. New Eagle’s expertise (and customer list) extends to hydraulic hybrid vehicles and propane and natural gas engine controls too, says founder and business development director Rich Swortzel. New Eagle suppor ts both OEM and retrofit products. At Calstart’s Hybrid Truck User Forum this past autumn, New Eagle “supplied one-third of the trucks in the show,” Swor tzel said. “The Parker systems, Terex, Altec, Dueco, Bright, ALTe, Remy all had New Eagle electronics on board,” he told Fleets & Fuels.

Trucks bought with HVIP support are used for variety of applications by large and small fleets, among them UPS, FedEx, Coke – and the San Francisco Food Bank.

HVIP Roars Into Year Two The Hybrid Vehicle Incentive Program, the Calstart-California Air Resources Board initiative to help operators offset the cost premiums on hybrid electric vehicles, is moving into its second year with nearly $19 million in funding, including $2 million reserved for public fleets. Fleets can get as much as $30,000 per truck. “We’ve got $2,425,00 in vouchers requested so far,” Calstart’s Denver-based Tom Brotherton said on the eve of WTS-11. Calstart awarded $19,440,000 last year, supporting the

placement of 667 hybrid vehicles. Put another way, HVIP 2010 grew the overall California fleet by nearly a third, Calstart says. HVIP was named as one of the top emerging energy efficiency programs in the country this past fall by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. “This is an example of a smart program that works in California, and will be easy to adopt in other states,” said Calstart president and CEO John Boesel. Eaton Wants to Stay the Heavy Hybrid Drive Leader With more than a thousand heavy duty hybrid vehicles manufactured by customer Daimler Trucks of North America (Freightliner) alone, drive supplier Eaton is the volume leader in heavy duty hybrids, offering both electric

Seth Deutsch of Eaton

Fleets & Fuels ShowTimes: What might we say about incremental costs on the hybrid vehicles? Are they coming down? It’s clear that return on investment will come faster if fuel prices are higher. Seth Deutsch: When we first brought this system out, most of the applications for this parallel electric system were looking at 12- to 15-year or even higher payback kind of estimates or calculations. With what we’re doing in terms of growing the scale of the business, integrating in new advanced lower cost components, we are going to be able to deliver five-year payback in a wide variety of applications by year-end 2011. When you’re talking about vehicles that these customers are keeping for 10, 12, 15 years, we think that gets into a realm of very attractive financial return – as well as a very attractive environmental return. It’s what I call getting the customer into a no-regret decision to spec this technology as a standard spec instead of an experiment. We’re on the precipice of turning this from niche to really the right spec in key applications, and to me, that’s the big story over the next 12 months. F&FST: Eaton’s volume leader is the parallel electric? SD: Yes. With the parallel system in the architecture that we have commercialized, even if you have a very significant issue with the hybrid system, typically it can just fall back in to standard propulsion mode and 12

F&FST: What is the biggest, most important market for you? SD: Certainly at this point, the parallel electric has been the one we got into production first. We’ve had the broadest penetration and market application. We’ve got the most numbers on the road. We issued a press release at year-end that we hit 100 million miles. That was with that architecture and that product, and we continue to see significant growth and demand for that type of technology. F&FST: When for the second 100 million miles? A billion? SD: We are accumulating at just under about 10 million a month, somewhere between 9 and 10 million a month right now. We’ll certainly see 200 million by the end of the year. I’d say end of 2014, end of 2015 [for a billion]. F&FST: Is your emphasis in hydraulics hybrids likewise the parallel architecture? SD: The parallel hydraulic system is very focused on refuse collection applications. There’s a fantastic value proposition there. We just put that into limited release last year and we’ll be expanding the release of that product and the volumes going out into service here in 2011. We expect some very significant growth, but it is kind of a smaller overall target market because it is refuse-focused and it’s much earlier in the market development cycle.

and hydraulic hybrid variants. Eaton hybrids have logged more than 100 million miles. Here’s how Eaton Hybrid Power Systems Division business development director Seth Deutsch sees the burgeoning field. Booth 4369.

nology, we’re understanding the relative costs to develop and to manufacture, and we’re looking at a variety of applications, both on highway and off highway. F&FST: Can you say how many people work on hybrids at Eaton? SD: Well, I would say roughly somewhere between 100 and 150 dedicated, and then we’ve got quite a variety of matrixed support folks who are involved in the hybrid business from field sales and service to account reps at all kinds of customers, and folks in manufacturing plants and logistics. That’s one of the advantages we bring as part of a larger commercial vehicle enterprise. We can leverage those resources in the company to improve the value that we’re delivering to our customers and to the market. F&FST: How important is hybrid technology is to Eaton as a whole? SD: We’re putting a huge emphasis on hybrids in terms of future growth and in terms of doing the right thing from an ethical and an environmental perspective. It is the only product line that’s reporting to the president of [Eaton’s] vehicle group. F&FST: At what rate is hybrid demand growing?

F&FST: And the series hydraulic? Where do you see that going? SD: The series hydraulic, at this point in time, is still what we would call in a technology and market study, so we’ve put prototype vehicles together, we’re understanding the tech-

SD: Over the past three years, we’ve grown the business here in North America probably pretty close to somewhere between 50 and 100% each and every year. Five years from now, we expect it to be a very material portion of the vehicle group’s revenues. F&FST: What about your relationships with suppliers? SD: We have a clear strategy to maintain our differentiated position as a system integrator. It’s very important for us to stay on the leading edge of energy storage technology, motor technology, pump motor technology on the hydraulic side. We have a strategy to expand our supply base, tap into the highest value, best performing, lowest cost versions. That’s how we can continue to drive improved functionality of the system and lower cost, and hence much higher adoption. This is true of batteries, electric motors, and hydraulic pumps, and hydraulic accumulators. Over the next 24 months, we’re going to see more movement on the batteries and the electric motors than on the hydraulic components because of the scale of activity, the scale of investment that’s been going on on a global basis. But strategically, it’s the same approach. It’s the same strategy to drive cost out of the supply chain.

Eaton’s Plug-In Hybrids Project Watch for the Eaton (Booth 4369) and its partners EPRI (the Electric Power Research Institute), Southern California Edison and Ford to detail their $45.4 million ARRA plan to deploy some 378 plug-in hybrid electric versions of the Ford F-550 – among some 50 fleets – as utility trouble trucks beginning late in 2011. “It’s a substantal variant,” says Eaton’s Seth Deutsch,” but answers the global call for call for more grid connectivity for vehicles. “We’re using an A123 lithium ion-based battery pack and it’s going to have energy storage of about 23 kilowatt hours,” Deutsch says. “It has to deliver a minimum of 10 miles of electric-only operation.”

The Indiana Department of Transportation has just bought 19 CNG-fueled Kenworth T440 dump trucks – they will be used for snow-plowing too.

Cummins Westport’s spark-ignition ISL G.

Westport HD includes fuel tank, engine, and everything in between.

Westport & Cummins Westport for NGVs Canada’s Westport Innovations and its Cummins Westport affiliate (a 50:50 joint venture formed in 2001) currently dominate the natural gas fueled truck and bus markets in North America – and both are exhibiting at WTS 2011. Cummins Westport (Booth 609) supplies Cummins engines modified for spark ignition. The firm offers a family of engines around the world, including at least one LPG-propane offering, but in North America offers only the 8.9-liter ISL G , which is fully U.S. EPA- and California-certified for 2010 without the costly exhaust aftertreatment necessary for diesels. The ISL G can be seen on the CNG-fueled Freightliner Business Class M2 at Booth 3851. The ISL G also powers 19 Kenworth T440 dump trucks just purchased by the Indiana Department of Transportation (more INDOT on page 17). The new CNG-fueled T440s will used in the Indianapolis area, where CNG fueling is available. The company is working on an 11.9-liter version based on the new diesel offering from Cummins and, of more interest to work truck operators, a 6.7-liter variant. Westport Innovations (Booth 5257) announced last month that UPS is buying 48 over-the-road Kenworth tractors with the Westport HD liquefied natural gas fuel system, which includes the GX engine, a 15-liter Cummins ISX modified to run primarily on methane with diesel as a starting aid, or “liquid spark plug.” The Westport HD includes LNG storage tank,

pumps and plumbing, associated electronic components, chasis-mounted high-pressure “accumulator” for serving fuel to the system’s High Pressure Direct Injectors for the GX engine – a 15-liter Cummins ISX modified to run primarily on natural gas with a small amount of pilot diesel – the liquid spark. At cruise, the engine runs mostly on natural gas. The Westport HD for 2010 has SCR-selective catalytic reduction to meet NOx emission limits. The add-on serves to reduce overall engine effi-

ciency, Westport says, as it allows the engine to run hotter. Westport Innovations noted in announcing the deal for the 48 LNG Kenworths that “UPS will now boast a fleet of more than 1,100 natural gas trucks including [CNG] delivery vehicles powered by Cummins Westport engines. The Kenworth tractors will use a new LNG fueling station in Las Vegas now being built by Clean Energy Fuels (Booth 5356) and its new NorthStar subsidiary.

Energy Xtreme’s U36 ‘Mild Hybrid’ Austin-based Energy Xtreme is promoting its new U36 Crossover as a “mild hybrid” at Booth 5469, stating that the product “is providing reliable, emissionfree energy to power the hydraulic lifts of bucket trucks that are commonly used by municipal, telecom, cable and utility fleets to repair electricity and phone lines, trim trees or rescue the occasional cat.” U36 doesn’t affect a vehicle’s propulsion driveline but it allows operators to sharply reduce engine idling at jobsites, reducing fuel use and pollution. “Bucket trucks and similar utility vehicles have different demands than the typical truck because they often sit in Energy Xtreme is promoting its U36. one spot and run equipment for extended periods of time while repair crews are at work,” product development VP Ross Johnson says in a release. “Our U36 Crossover has a smaller footprint, weighs less than 750 pounds and provides more power than other products on the market.” “Besides the significant cost savings and emission reduction we achieve utilizing Energy Xtreme’s Utility Series, the weight reduction alone is enough to justify the conversion of our equipment,” Richard Malish of Centerpoint Energy says in Energy Xtreme’s announcement. “The Utility Series reduces our payload by 35% and eliminates our weekly maintenance routine to upkeep our batteries and service generators.” Where does the electricity come from? A rechargeable unit dubbed PowerCell that Energy Xtreme says was developed for the Pentagon. Is it a battery? “The public perception of battery is very different from what PowerCell actually is,” says Energy Xtreme marketing director Julie Hill. Ultracapacitor? “It’s a meeting of the two,” she says, further describing PowerCell as a “dry technology,” power-dense, non-hazardous and recyclable. The PowerCell-powered U36 can be factory integrated onto new vehicles or retrofitted.

Gunk Has Gone Green You’ve probably heard of Gunk and Liquid Wrench but you might not know about the bio-based SafeCare and EnviroLogic brand variants on show here at Booth 5368. “Gunk Powered by SafeCare” products include Truck and Equipment Wash, Heavy Duty Degreaser, Universal Parts Washing Fluid, and a General Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser. The “Liquid Wrench Powered by EnviroLogic” line features Penetrating Oil, Jack Oil, Aerial Lift Fluid, and Mobile Equipment Hydraulic Fluid. The non-hazardous formulas are the first since 86-year-old, North Car-

olina-based Radiator Specialty Company pledged last year to provide a more environmentally friendly product line. Liquid Wrench and Gunk are RSC Chemical Solutions division brands. “RSC Bio Solutions is committed to producing bio-based cleaners, degreasers and lubricants that provide non-hazardous alternatives for applications where both high performance and safety are essential,” business development VP Mike Guggenheimer said in a release. “These new products increase safety and efficiency for our customers because if there is an accidental spill in the workplace, no harm will be done to their employees or to the environment.” Famed for Liquid Wrench and Gunk, North Carolina’s RSC promised a more environmentally friendly line last year.

It’s Official: BAF Is a Ford QVM The BAF Technologies unit of Clean Energy Fuels has been designated as a Qualified Vehicle Modifier of gaseousfueled vehicles by Ford (Booth 3431). The QVM approval process involves Ford scrutiny of the aftermarket vendor’s design, manufacturing and quality control processes. “In-depth evaluations by Ford include crash testing, demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement, and reviews of representative vehicles and customer support systems,” Clean Energy-BAF said. BAF’s upfitting capabilities include aftermarket compressed natural gas (CNG) conversions of Ford-manufactured vans, cutaway shuttles, taxis, pick-ups and light-duty trucks. BAFconverted vehicles are on show by Knapheide (3741) and Altec (4875) here too.

Hyva for Cleaner Hydraulics Hyva (USA) is promoting lightweight hydraulic equipment for “lifting, loading, stacking and tipping” at Booth 5453 in the Calstart Pavilion. The firm, founded in The Netherlands in 1979, says it’s the leading global provider of innovative and highly efficient transport solutions for the commercial vehicle and environmental services providers industry.” According to sales chief James Hunt, “We offer weight-savings and we’re cleaner. We use less hydraulic oil and we create less run time on the pump. In addition to using a bit less Hyva Belgium Hyva Malaysia energy, we’re also less apt to contaminate. We don’t have the oil dripping down the front of the cylinder.”

CNG Kenworth T440s for Alagasco “Alagasco is walking the walk when it comes to CNG,” says Kenworth. The 160-year-old utility, which has grown from a gas street lamp outfit to Alabama’s largest distributor of natural gas, has added seven compressed natural gas Kenworth T440s. Alagasco’s T440s feature the ISL G engine from Cummins Westport (Booth 609), with maintenance-free, three-way catalyst. The engine is 2010 EPA- and California-compliant with neither SCR nor DPF (selective catalytic reduction/ diesel particulate filter). Kenworth has brought two hybrid electric T370 hybrid tractors this week, one for Booth 3031 and one for the ride-and-drive Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. They have hybrid drives by Eaton (Booth 4369). CNG Kenworth T440s haul lowboys to transport backhoes.
