Welcome A warm welcome at the FUB. First lecture: FUB=Free University of Bozen – Bolzano / Freie Universität Bozen. But what is LUB? As we are trilingual, some languages need special treatment. In this case it is Italian and it means Libera Università di Bolzano. You will notice soon that this university is a melting pot of languages. But don’t worry; soon you will also speak the common language here: DITENGLISCH ;-). In order to help you survive the first weeks and months in the “Jungle” of the FUB, the Students’ Speakers in association with Flyer created this new issue of the “Chaospilot”. This booklet for rookies gives you all the necessary information you need. As the name already tells, “Chaospilot” means that we would like to guide you through these first – probably chaotic – days. Beginning with your student card and password you receive at the first day – the official things - right up to how to hunt your food in the mensa (canteen would be the appropriate English word but in DITENGLISCH mensa is correct) – the really important things. At first it may be hard to figure out what kind of Associations and Services the University offers and what their functions are. We want to give you an overview on the purpose and activity each Association and Service pursues and present it in a simple way. However, an important restriction: this Chaospilot is only a supplement to the official information pro3

vided by the university, for example the study manifestos of every course. Due to the fact that this university is very young and in a continuous process of growth, some given information might be valid only for a few months, for example room numbers could be changed. The same goes for the information about the student portal, which is being redesigned currently. At the end you find important facts about your specific faculties. Most of the booklet is in English as it is the common language at the sites of Bolzano and Brunico. Infos für Brixen gibt’s auf Deutsch. Per Bressanone ci sono anche le informazioni in Italiano. We know that the Chaospilot is not able to cover all topics but:

We hope this will help you. And if any question remains: JUST ASK! FRAG EINFACH! CHIEDI PURE! Angelika Ganserer and Maximilian Schnabel Students‘ Speakers and Flyer Editor

Factsheet Student card Your student card is the key to many services that you will need almost every day. The card is handed out when you enroll. You can use it for the following: • to pay for food and drinks in the Mensa, Unibar (only at Bolzano) and at vending machines at Bolzano and Bressanone • to borrow and return books from the library • to make photocopies and prints • to enter the university buildings from the back entrance of the buildings C, E and F (in Bolzano) • to access rooms reserved for your faculty Important: the card is also proof of identity. In most faculties you have to bring it to exams. It’s valid only for one semester and has to be renewed after the payment of the study fees. The machines to renew the card are located in the library and the student secretariat.   The machines to recharge the card with cash can be found in Bozen/Bolzano on the left of the Mensa entrance, in Brixen/Bressanone next to the reception desk and in Bruneck/ Brunico in the entrance hall.   Lost your student card? In order to prevent other people from using it, you should lock the card immediately. This can be done online in the Intranet area under” Report Card Payment / Lock Card”. A new card costs 20 Euro and needs to be requested at the Student Secretariat. 5

Computer Rooms / e-mail / account / WLAN In Bozen/Bolzano you can find the computers in the library. In Brixen/Bressanone you can find computers in the library and also in the Missionshaus, but we wouldn’t recommend using them. The computers in the PC room on the third floor are faster, trust us.   You receive your login information (username and password) from the student secretariat at the time you enroll. At your first login you have to change the password. With this account you are able to use university computers, access your university e-mails and use Intranet services and the wireless network (WLAN). E-mail inbox and intranet services can be accessed even outside the university.   E-mail (OutlookWebAccess): https://webmail.unibz.it   Intranet area: Homepage  Students  ICT Services On the university computers you can also access e-mails by using Outlook, which is already configured. You can store in your online email account up to 100 MB. Once you reach an amount of 80 MB, you’ll be informed via e-mail that you have to delete something. Note that also e-mails in the folders “Sent ltems” and “Deleted Items” are counting. Be warned that you’ll be receiving a lot of e-mails from the university (some useful, some not so much) – especially those with big attachments can stuff your inbox pretty quickly! Also, if you don’t want to miss anything, be sure to check you e-mails regularly. Very important information (regarding exams for example) will be communicated by the administration, faculty and professors via this channel. 6

If you get an email complaining that your “Storage Quota” is 112% of the available space, the problem is not the emails. You have to decrease your used space by deleting files because you have saved/stored too much data on the network location, so on the “computer” itself. You have to go to Start  Computer  students (E:) and navigate to your name to delete some files there. For printing in the University you choose the printer “CPS Generic Postscript”, now the document is available for printing at all printers in the university buildings. Just go to a printer of your choice and put your student card onto the nearby card reader. Once you have presented your card, you can see all your documents ready for printing. Choose one and it will get printed.   If you are also using a personal notebook at the university: you can establish a connection to access the wireless network (Scientific Network South Tyrol) more or less in all parts of the building. It will allow you to connect to printers, your files on the server and surf the web. There are also detailed manuals which illustrate how to setup the WLAN etc. They can be found at the website of the I&CT department (www.unibz.it/ict). For any kind of trouble you should contact the I&CT by writing a ticket. This can be done at: https://support.unibz.it. Note that this is the preferred way to contact the I&CT department. Once you “open” a ticket, you’ll be able to track its process and see the person’s name working on it. When the problem is solved, you may also rate the staff’s work. 7

Intranet Services Some essential services for students can be accessed from the university website (Homepage  Students  ICT Services). There you can enroll to exams, plan your studies e.g. select optional courses and create an individual timetable.   The enrollment for exams on time is a condition in order to be allowed to sit the exam. The enrollment period starts a few weeks before the first exam. The deadline is different across faculties, but your Faculty Secretariat will let you know the necessary things in time. You will always receive an automatic e-mail from the student secretariat with the confirmation of enrolment. In the Study Career you can find all exams on your degree course, the grades of already passed exams and even your grade point average. The timetable of your lectures can be found on the website of your faculty. Additionally, an individual timetable is provided that can be personalized based on individual preferences and needs.

Reserve Collections On the website of the Library you can find the link to the Reserve Collection. This Reserve Collection is used by many professors and lecturers to publish their teaching related material, e.g. slides, handouts, homework, student grades, and text books.

Mensa The canteens in each town have different opening hours: Bozen/Bolzano Brixen/Bressanone Bruneck/Brunico

Mo-Sa 12-14 + Mo-Sa 18-20 Mo-Sa 12-14 + Fr 18-19:45 Mo-Fr 11:30-13:30

The Unimensa (by the way, the British term for it would be canteen, but as some words differ between British English, American English and Australian English, “Bolzanian English” is no exception) has three different price categories for students: the €2.07 menu, the €2.58 and the complete €3.10. You may ask, how does it come that it’s so cheap? Well, one of the advantages of studying in South Tyrol is that the Autonomous Province of Bolzano is very generous and pays you between 47% and 60% of your food expenses in the Unimensa, depending on the menu you take. Let’s face the enigma from the mathematical point of view (at least you economics and informatics students should understand the following explanation). The equal sign means that for the pricing method the compared items are the same. The pizza menu is a bit different. It always costs you 3.10 and you can take twice an “A” item except for the warm side dishes (like mashed potatoes, spinaches, french fries), so only fruits/ desserts and/or a salad. Remember that you are allowed to pay only two meals a day with your student card! From the third on you will be charged the full price (without the Province’s subsidy). So if you want 9

to offer a lunch to a friend of yours, you may be better off having dinner somewhere else. The mensa menus:

A

Small salad= Side dish= One fruit= Yogurt= Pudding

2.07 € 2A + B

B

Pasta= Big salad

C

Meat= Steak= Fish= Cold dish

2.58 €

3.10 €

2A + C = 2A + 2B

3A + B + C

If you take less but not enough to slip in the inferior category, you‘ll pay the upper price. Drinks and bread are free. You are only allowed to pay with your student card and not in cash. An exception is the canteen of Bruneck/Brunico. There you can only pay cash. A microwave is provided in case you would like to heat up your food. The Unibar in Bozen accepts both cash payment and Student Card (with a 20% discount!).

Foreigners Specific information for students not from Italy is provided by the Advisory Service. In Bolzano you’ll find many brochures at the Info Point but also in front of it; in Bressanone you can find them in their office. In any case, you can always contact them directly. 10

Things to know…! •

in the Intranet area of the university website you will find a list of all your purchases made with your Student Card (  “Report Card Payment”); printers, photocopy machines, CD writers, scanners are available in the Library and in Bruneck/Brunico also in the “Students’ Study Area”, in Brixen/Bressanone in the lounge on the second floor and in Bozen/Bolzano in the corridors spread over the university building; the library reminds you via E-mail or SMS one day before you have to return a book (for SMS you have to activate the service in the student portal); on the black notice-boards of the university you can find job and housing offers, but also via the university website there exists a blog for accommodation offers (http://accommodationunibz.blogspot.com) ; the Social Club is a place where you can meet friends. It can be found in Bozen/Bolzano in the F-Building on the 6th floor. Check out the terrace with its wonderful view over the city. On this floor there are also the offices of the student representatives and the student associations such as kikero, S.C.U.B., and the Alumni Club. Another office which is used for student projects (ex. Flyer, Aiesec, Uniparty) is quite close: C4.06. In Brixen/Bressanone you find the office of the student representatives, S.C.U.B. and Kikero on the 2nd floor (2.12). press cuttings and Uni-news appear on the university homepage; 11

to put a classified advertisement on the notice-board, the doorman first has to stamp it; at the end of each course there is an evaluation of the professor: this is very important, please take it seriously! These evaluations results, among other things, determine if the contract of the professor gets renewed or not. lost something? Ask in Brixen/Bressanone and Bruneck/Brunico the technical service (maintenance) and in Bozen/Bolzano the doorman at the entrance ; if the PC or printer is not working, the toner is finished or no paper is available. Inform the corresponding department via https://support.unibz.it; books from the library can be borrowed and returned either by using the self check machine or directly to the librarian. Just follow the instructions on the display. Late returns are fined (make it your habit to return books before the last day, 7 p.m.). With the online catalogue (OPAC) you have the possibility to search for all media, check their status and read their description. If too many search results are returned you should use the advanced search function. lockers in the library are without charge and you can get the keys at the Library Information desk. They can be rented only for one day. There are also lockers outside the library, in the A- and E-Building that can be rented for one semester (Bolzano). The price is 10 Euro per semester.

all teaching staff has “Office Hours” where you can get further explanation or feedback for your homework. Use the office hours for questions or clarifications, especially when the course language is not your mother tongue. The more prepared you are (e.g. with a catalogue of questions) the more effective the result will be. Don’t be shy: only those who don’t ask, don’t know! Some professors, especially in Brixen, might prefer to arrange a date and time beforehand via e-mail. as we are a small university, most professors are open to discussing problems via e-mail or also to meet outside of regular lectures or office hours; professors are also human and most of them are quite happy to receive some feedback presented in a respectful way. Don’t hesitate to ask for things that might assist you in your learning process! never forget to enroll to exams on time! it’s always good to check the timetable on a regular basis because there might be some changes; a student job, also known as 150 hour job, is your possibility to work up to 150 hours in different areas of university’s administration. The payment is 8 Euro per hour. Unfortunately this possibility works currently for Bachelor students only from second year. exchange programs give you the opportunity to study abroad throughout the whole year, service offices like the Li-

brary, the Career Advisory Service or also Kikero offer a wide variety of seminars, trainings sessions or other events that might contribute to your academic but also general education. studying is not always that easy. At a certain time you might find yourself in a crisis and you might feel like talking to a professional. Coaching can support students in difficult situations so that students get successfully through their studies. Don’t worry and make an appointment with the psychologist Nadia Resch (ps@asus.sh). The appointments are free of charge for students.

17

Transport and communication Bike It’s the most efficient and fastest way to move from one place to another. If you don’t have a bike and still would like to cycle around you can also rent one. They can be rented between April and October at a price of 1 Euro for six hours or 2 Euro for a whole day (deposit 10 Euro). The place to pick them up and return them is Viale della Stazione, which is next to Piazza Walther. Cycling lanes are provided inside as well as outside the city; it’s advisable to use them. Note: your bike must be equipped with a light if you are using it at night.

Car To park in the blue parking slots you have to pay. The white ones are reserved for people living in that area. You can also park in the industrial area. You can apply for a parking permit at the town council office. They are not issued to people living in halls of residence or without a residence permit.   Cars should not be left too long unattended. When the street cleaning happens, they remind you only three days before by putting signs on the streets. Cars parked on the street during the cleaning period are towed away and you have to pay around 150 Euro to reclaim them.

Bus Using the orange city buses (SASA) you pay 65 cents for one ride. The price is the same for the entire city area (there are no zones) except if you are using Line 2 which goes out18

side the city. The tickets can be bought on the bus (coins of € .10, .20, .50, 1 and 2). It’s cheaper to buy a ticket for 5 Euro (Wertkarte/carta valore) instead of a single trip ticket. Those tickets can be also used for buses that go outside the city (SAD). Buses that go to ski resorts have appropriate spaces for your equipment. After 8 p.m. there is a night bus in Bolzano that is a combination of several lines and runs until midnight (servizio notturno-Linea 153). If you want to get back home from a late party in the Bruneck/Pustertal area, then check out the “Nightliner” offers. SASA (city buses in Bolzano) – http://www.sasabz.it. SAD (public transport outside city) – http://www.sad.it.

Train To use the train in the region of South Tyrol you can use the same ticket as for the buses (carta valore / Wertkarte) which is cheaper than buying the ticket at the train station. It’s not possible to buy tickets on the train. Also very important: don’t forget to punch the tickets (otherwise they are not valid and you have to pay a fine!): use the yellow machines for the normal train tickets and the green ones for the carta valore / Wertkarte.

ABO+ The travel pass ABO+ by the province costs 100 Euro and allows students under the age of 26 to use all buses in South Tyrol, trains between Brenner and Trento and some cable cars for a whole academic year. The intercity trains of Trenitalia or “EC DB/ÖBB” cannot be used with the ABO+. The application form can be filled in at the bus station. 19

Communication The phone prefix of Italy is +39 (or 0039). To make calls outside Italy you have to dial the prefix of the country you are calling. For example, if you are calling from here to Germany you have to add the prefix 0049.   If you call numbers in Italy keep in mind that you need always the prefix of the city/mobile network, even if you are calling numbers in the same city from where you are calling! In South Tyrol there are four prefixes, 0471 is for the areas around and southern of Bozen/Bolzano, 0472 covers Brixen/ Bressanone and the north, 0473 covers the west area of South Tyrol including Meran/Merano and the surrounding areas and 0474 the east part with Bruneck/Brunico.

Mobile phones It’s common to use a prepaid card. The most used providers are Tim, Vodafone, Wind and Tre. All of them have small variations in the price. Have a careful look at the different tariffs of providers and choose one that fits best for you. To recharge your phone credit you don’t have to pay an extra fee. You can do that in some Tabacchi directly or buy a recharging card almost everywhere.

Students’ Associations Students’ Speakers Representation of students? Why shouldn’t I represent myself? In which cases would I need somebody else speaking up for me? We have the administrative and teaching staff to support us – isn’t that enough?! Well, as you might soon find out yourself, theory is one thing, practice is another… Students’ Speakers – once again: what are they good for? Are you having any kind of problems with a lecturer or the administration? Do you have suggestions for improvements at the university? You don’t want to accept everything others decide upon? It doesn’t matter whether it’s about course content, examination dates, the meals provided by the canteen or discrimination of any kind you are facing – we are your advocate for transparency, politician, consultant and partner at the same time. In all the cases above and a lot more, getting in touch with us, the student representatives, is worthwhile.   Students’ Speakers: who are they? First of all, we representatives are normal students and have faced or are facing the same problems you are. We are not to be addressed formally with “Mr” or “Miss”… hey, we are just as old as you (or at least we feel as if we were ;) ). An overview of all the current representatives (=Students’ Speakers) can be found on the homepage of the university 21

http://www.unibz.it/en/students/representatives/default.html. We Speakers are elected for a two-year term by all the respective students and represent them on four different levels: in the University Council (1), Academic Senate (2), Faculty Councils (2 each Faculty) and Course Councils (1 or 2 each CC). We are your voice in all these councils.   Students’ Speakers: how to contact them? Either you write us (English, German, Italian) an email to Studentsspeaker@unibz.it or you just directly talk to us. We don’t bite! We are students just like you. Have a good start at the FUB and for any questions, just contact us! Your Students’ Speakers

sh.asus The South Tyrolean students’ association, sh.asus (German: Südtiroler HochschülerInnenschaft, Italian: associazione studenti/esse universitari/e sudtirolesi, Ladin: lia di studenc dl’université de südtirol) currently has approximately 1,000 members and is the region’s main interest group for students in or from South Tyrol. We co-operate with and are part of several government bodies (e.g. the regional committee for the right to higher education) and hold regular meetings with politicians and relevant decision makers. Over the past few years, we have managed to increase student grants and scholarships and have drawn local and international media attention to conditions in local student halls. At the moment, we are campaigning for the remodelling of Bozen’s university square and a more varied nightlife.   Our regular events at the university are just one step towards making Bozen a real student town – we host pub quizzes at the UniBar, movie nights and meetings at the Social Club, and dancing classes in autumn. Feel free to contact us if you would like to contribute your ideas or even organise an event of your own!   One of every student’s main concerns is money or the lack of money. Services Student Secretariat The Student secretariat, with its offices in Bozen-Bolzano and Brixen-Bressanone, is in charge of the administrative matters regarding your career as a student. You can apply to the secretariat for pre-enrolment, enrolment, enrolment in the years after the first, tuition fees information, certifications (enrolment and exam certifications can also be printed out by yourself from the E-Points terminals) and admission to the final degree exam.   Upon enrolment you will receive from the secretariat your personal Student Card – which proves your identity as a student and also functions as a library card and as a means of payment on the university premises – and a user account which enables you to access your mailbox, enroll for exams (which occurs online), visualize passed exams and access your electronic study book, compile your online study plan (active for selected courses only), modify your personal data, subscribe to the SMS service (exam date changes, loan deadline, etc.), enter bank account details for reimbursements (e.g., for scholarship holders), download and print payment receipts of tuition fees. The Student secretariat also processes the applications regarding transfers to other universities and internal degree 31

changes, applications for dropping out of a course, coordinates the editing of the study manifestos and issues the diplomas and the diploma supplements.   The office manages student data. Therefore, it elaborates statistics regarding students for the Italian Ministry and verifies and transfers data required by the university consortium Cineca. In co-operation with the I&CT department, it also supports the informatisation of the procedures concerning students.   Finally, the Student secretariat is in charge of the recognition of Austrian academic qualifications.

Language Centre The Language Centre has a variety of functions for prospective students and students of all degree courses. Although the university is relatively small, we offer courses in nine languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Ladin, Russian and Spanish). Our optional language courses try to cover all levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (from the beginners’ level to A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 which is a near native-speaker level). We offer our courses throughout the whole academic year.   The summer intensive courses are of particular importance because it is the season for pre-enrolment and the selection of new students. During the summer courses the prospective students are acquainted with the new environment, they meet their future fellow students and they get a good idea of what studying in three languages really means. Therefore, every prospective student and every freshman and woman should take a few points into account:   the language requirements of the Free University of Bolzano have a well-defined function and that is to provide students with excellent subject matter teaching in three languages that they are able to understand. A B2 in two languages is not an end in itself but the starting point for the understanding of academic discourse (spoken and written). Getting to this level of competence requires a lot of work in class and at home. In other words: you will need from 500 to 600 hours of work in order to get from a beginners’ level to B2! Therefore our basic advice is to start as soon as possi34

Library We are a library in the 21st century, which means we can hear you asking the following question: so what’s the point of a library now that there’s the internet and basically everything anyone needs to know can be found by inserting a couple of words into Google?   Well, we have one huge advantage over Google–the Library has people: we have our hardworking, expert librarians behind the scenes who do all the precision work so that you can use all our services. They purchase, organize, inform, mediate… they are friendly and most importantly, they have a face. And they certainly won’t leave you to drown in 65,600,000 search results! And now some more questions that we can answer for you:   So how do I use the Library? Your Student Card is pretty flexible, and one of the things it does is double up as your Library Card.   What is my user account? Go into the online catalogue, click on ACCOUNT and you have 24/7 access to your own user account! The account shows you all your borrowed and reserved items and how long you can keep them for (and when you have to bring them back again!) You can also use your account to renew or reserve items. To gain access, all you need to do is enter your library number (it’s the number on the back of your Student Card that starts: 7000…) and your password (your date of birth: DDMMYY).   So how can I borrow stuff? To borrow media you need your Student Card. In Bozen/ 37

Bolzano and Brixen/Bressanone you can use the Self -Check to take out books on your own. In Bruneck/Brunico you can borrow books from the University Library that’s in the same building as the Town Library. You can borrow up to 40 items (books, journals, DVDs, …) at the same time.   And how do I return the stuff I’ve borrowed? You can return your items to any of the three libraries in Bozen/Bolzano, Brixen/Bressanone or Bruneck/Brunico. In Brixen/Bressanone and Bozen/Bolzano you can use the Self Check in the Library or you can go to the librarian at the desk, who will check them back in for you. And if the Library’s closed, or you don’t want to go in, outside the building there is the Book Drop (in Bozen/Bolzano, Brixen/Bressanone and Bruneck/Brunico) where you can put your items 24/7.   And of course, if you’ve got any more questions, come in and have a chat or send us an email. Who needs Google?

Careers Advisory Service An important aim that the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano takes very seriously is to encourage students to make contacts with the world of work; first and foremost through teaching, which doesn’t just concentrate on theory: as well as lectures there are also seminars, work placement programmes and practical work that allow students to put their skills into practice. What is also important is the experience that students gain through undertaking work placements, which can be both compulsory and optional depending on the degree course.   The Careers Advisory Service promotes and coordinates the interface between students and graduates, and the world of work: it has a database full of work placement and job offers, it organizes the work placement schemes on an administrative level, coordinates part-time and seasonal job offers, organizes trips to companies and institutions and allows students and graduates to make contact with various professional fields as well as organizing seminars on research activities in the world of work.   For more information: http://www.unibz.it/en/students/ internships/whoweare.html.

International Relations Office Study abroad or at one of our Italian partner universities: why should I? Studying at another university is a very enriching experience from all points of view. You have the opportunity to study new subjects or to study them in a different way, to improve your knowledge of foreign languages, meet new people and learn about different lifestyles. You have a wide choice of countries and universities, your studies will be recognized and you will also get financial support. Don’t miss this opportunity!   An internship in Europe? Is it useful? Yes, it is a great opportunity to gather work experience either while you are a student or soon after you finish your studies. Thanks to the Erasmus Placement (for students) and the Leonardo da Vinci (for new graduates) programmes, funded by the European Union, you receive support and funding for your internships abroad. Incoming students? Who are they? Most of our exchange programmes are based on reciprocity: on one hand we help our students to go and study at other universities; on the other hand, we welcome and support students from other universities. Every year we receive students from Europe and all over the world. Getting in contact with our incoming students is a great opportunity for our regular students: you can meet the world without leaving our university! Also, it’s particularly interesting to meet our incoming students if you’re interested in going to one of their countries of origin or if you have been there as an exchange student. Faculties Faculty of Computer Science The Faculty of Computer Science is not located in the main University building, but in the POS building, in Piazza Domenicani 3. Professors’ Offices You can find all professors’ offices in the Faculty premises, in Piazza Domenicani 3, on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor. For the details, see: www.unibz.it/en/inf/people/academic. Faculty Administration The Faculty Administration is also located in Piazza Domenicani 3, 1st floor, left wing. See: www.unibz.it/en/inf/people/administrative. Faculty IT Center The Faculty IT Center is in the Faculty premises as well, in Piazza Domenicani 3, 3rd floor, left wing. See: www.unibz.it/en/inf/people/technical. Lecture Rooms All lectures are held in the main University building. Most of them take place in the E-building, some also in the C, D or F building.

46

Didactic Material Rather than in the Reserve Collection, most professors upload their didactic material to their own website, or make it available through the Teleacademy e-Iearning platform (www.teleacademy.it). The exact location of the material is published on the Course Page of the Faculty or announced by each professor during the first lectures.   The best starting point to access course material and information is the Course Page of the Faculty at: www.unibz.it/en/inf/progs/courses. Computer Rooms Computer labs are located in the E building: • room E3.31, 3rd floor • Room E4.31, 4th floor • Room E5.31, 5th floor Access to computer labs is granted to Computer Science students only, by means of the student card. All 75 work stations have a Windows/Linux dual boot. IT Resources You can receive an MSDN Academic Alliance account by contacting the Faculty IT Center at cs‑helpdesk@support.unibz. it. The account allows you to download, install and run various Microsoft software, like Microsoft Windows Vista, free of charge. You can also receive free academic licenses for VMware and IBM software.   You can request your own virtualised course project server, and last generation mobile devices (iPhone/Android/Symbi47

an) are on free loan for students’ course projects. The Faculty IT Center maintains a wiki with a number of useful information at https://www.inf.unibz.it/wiki. Exam Copies In order to receive a copy an exam you took, you have to send a request via e-mail to computer.science@unibz.it from your unibz student account, specifying your matriculation no. and the name and date of the exam; you will then receive a scan of the exam via e-mail. Other useful information Check out the Faculty’s FAQ page at: www.unibz.it/en/inf/progs/faq.

Faculty of Design and Arts Faculty and Faculty Secretariat The faculty is located in the C and F sections of the SER building. All the workshops (carpentry, plastic, modeling, photography and video, printing, book binding, metalworks and free workspaces) have recently moved into the -1 and -2 floor of the F section. They are open from 9.00–12.00 and 13.00– 17.00 Monday to Friday. The material office is situated in C2.05. It is open only from Monday to Wednesday.   All workshops as well as the MacPool, Print Shop (C3.01) and the CAD Pool (C section 1st floor) can only be entered with your Student Card. 48

Lecture Rooms All lectures are held in the C and F section. Resources Additionally to the Reserve Collection, do not forget to visit the faculty homepage – http://www.unibz.it/design-art/. The faculty blog – http://www.freeunibz.net – is a valuable source for local events, free rooms and flats as well as news of the design world. We encourage all design students to contribute to freeunibz. Within the university building you can access the File Exchange and your Project Folder which are used to distribute data between students and professors. Workshops To be allowed to use the workshops you have to attend workshop courses, which are held during the semester breaks (and WUP).

School of Economics and Management First of all the Faculty Administration and we student representatives are always available for all matters concerning the School in particular. For related issues in the library you can ask our subject specialist who is currently Katharina Beberweil. Faculty Administration E-Building, 4th floor on the left side. 49

PC Pools We have an own pc room just for our faculty, also with special software installed (like SPSS) that might become useful during your studies. You find this room A5.18 on the 5th floor of building A, but you can only use it when there are no other classes at the same time. Optional Courses Please decide at the beginning of each academic year which optional courses you are going to take – otherwise it might happen that some get deactivated due to a too low number of interested students.   For your optional courses, there are several possibilities: first of all you can add courses from the other undergraduate programmes at our school (but only if they are not already in your study plan!). Additionally the School organizes a so called “summer school” (each week in the summer another course worth 2.5 credit points). This is also a popular way of doing an optional outside of the regular study time. Furthermore it is also possible to take courses from other faculties or even other universities – for both get in contact with the Faculty Administration early.   Please remember the advantages of keeping up with an average of 30 credit points per semester (e.g. for competitions), on the other hand you won’t please anyone if you ask too much of yourself. Exams You are allowed to sit the same exam a maximum of two times per academic year (the enrollment to the exam counts). Al50

ways bring your student card as identification to the exam and keep in mind that any kind of copying and plagiarism will be penalized in the appropriate way – no jokes about that!   You can ask for copies of your exams which you will receive then via e-mail as pdf files. The administration will inform you when and how the request can be made.

Brunico First we want to inform all you that we student representatives in Brunico will always be at your disposal if you need us or if you have some problems concerning the university. PC Pools We do not have any pc room in Brunico, but every floor has at least one pc. There are also no problems printing or photocopying something and the prices for doing it are very economic.   Anyway, almost everybody has got laptops and we do have a multimedia room where you can sit with your laptop and use the wireless LAN connection of the university. Canteen The Mensa in Brunico is excellent. The canteen is open Monday to Friday from 11:30 to 13:30. The payment is made by cash. But don’t worry, it doesn’t cost a fortune. It’s between 2,10€ and 3,10€ depending on your stomach. Unfortunately, the Mensa is not located in the university building; you’ll have to walk about 5 minutes. 51
