Ahmed bin Majid Male School Spring 2020

JULFAR, reaching for the stars The Architectural Design Concept of Ahmed bin Ma jid Male’s school

24

The new Ahmed Bin Ma jid male school plot is located in Al Hail, inside an urban area. The design of the new school building engages with the neighborhood and its circulation. The building is elevated from the ground by around 1.5 meters, showing the importance of the educational institution and creating an outdoor open area that is shaded by parts of the first and second floors. The school design was highly impacted by nature, as the courtyard is considered to be one of the most imported design elements, aiming in exposing the students to as much greenery since the area around the school lacks green spaces. The courtyard also provides natural light and ventilation to the heart of the building creating a fresh atmosphere. as the light peaks through the school from the courtyard, it creates a feeling of motivation for the students. Site plan with close surroundings

The school is pained a light grey tone, creating a smooth feeling to the eye which allows it to fit the context it’s been placed in. All classrooms are located towards the façade, for natural light, and to allow the students to stay focused and motivated. The name of the new school (JULFAR) was inspired by the sailor Ahmed Bin Ma jid himself, as Julfar was the name of his hometown. The logo shows an anchor as it is an important element to sailing. This element can also be found in the existing school’s logo. The logo also represents a child with plants as the school aims in integrating nature into the daily life of the students.

Connecting Berlin Winter 2020

40

41

Concept vision: Berlin is Germany’s capital and largest city. It is approximately 891.8 km² and has a population of 3.6 million inhabitants. The former railway site in Berlin has so much potential. The railway line ends at the Görlitzer Park, acting as a connector between the two neighborhoods of Kreuzberg and Treptow. The district Kreuzberg is known for its arts scene and its diverse cultural lifestyle. Treptow district is also full of art and entertainment studios and galleries. The former railway site has the potential to be transformed into an elevated linear extension to the park. As the site is already dense and very much car dependant, the main goal of the intervention is to create a safe path for the pedestrians, elevated from the streets, space for the people to interact with each other. The elevated area can be an escape from the busy chaos of the city, a space with colorful interactive activities, walkways, and sitting areas, with the introduction of agritecture, with spaces that are fully soft with vegetation, and others that are fully paved. A way to bring beauty of colors to the city, immerging it with the surrounding buildings.
