1. HISTORY & VISION
1.1. History
Schaduf was founded in 2011 with a mission to provide inspiring environmental solutions that improve quality of life through social and environmental change.
What started as a small rooftop farm has quickly grown into a major design and technology hub with innovations in landscape architecture, agriculture, vertical gardening and a wide range of sustainable products and services in the Middle East. We continue to push the boundaries of life sciences, engineering, and arts to meet the needs and wellbeing of our customers.
Schaduf's quest to lead the green movement in the region attracted a brilliant team of highly experienced researchers, architects, landscape architects, planners and engineers, where design and technology and nature blend together in perfect harmony.
1.2. Vision:
Our team recognizes the importance of creating responsible designs of all types, scales and at all stages of planning. We seek inspiration from the uniqueness of the natural, cultural, and historical context, while continuing to evolve to integrate new insights. Working with nature to achieve exciting results, we design timeless outdoor spaces and create relationships that reinforce these ideas for future projects and generations. Believing in holistic development, conservation of land and aesthetics, our architects are challenged to continuously improve the connection and harmony between people and place.
We provide our clients with fully integrated and end-toend design services that include feasibility studies, planning and all stages of design through tendering and site supervision. We have the advantage of being part of a multidisciplinary organization that provides immediate and direct access to additional expertise, including cost consultants, farmers, lighting experts and environmental consultants. This allows us to provide the best service for all our customers' needs.
2. SERVICES
2.1. MASTER PLANNING
2.4. SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT
Our team of planners assures an integrated multidisciplinary approach, where various design disciplines are interconnected and fully coordinated. Throughout our early intervention, we guide our clients through important strategic decisions to ensure optimal land use program, cost effectiveness and feasibility.
2.2. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Our thinking of sustainability extends far beyond following traditional credentials at the end of the process, to letting the environmental focus drive our designs. We select materials based not on aesthetics as the primary driver, but on what local regions can supply. This approach reinforces local identity and sustainability.
2.5. PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Our designs are exclusively tailored to have a unique character by capturing the site's characteristics, context, and the nature of its development to meet each its unique spectrum of challenges. Our team of specialists use customized range of indigenous plants and materials based on their extensive knowledge of the M.E regional requirements.
2.3. URBAN DESIGN
Our holistic and multidisciplinary design approach in the planning and analysis of our projects, aims to create urban spaces where architecture blends with landscape architecture and engineering, providing a foundation for memorable experiences and maintaining balance and visual harmony to the surrounding environment.
Our project management team ensures all design disciplines are fully synthesized and technically coordinated. Supervision by the designing firm is a huge advantage as it assures a high-quality project output as ideas and details are communicated correctly with little interference.
3. SCHADUF GUIDING PRINCIPLES
SCHADUF has a reputation for being pragmatic problem solvers with a genuine talent to create innovative, highquality environments. The following principles guide our work and are described here to help explain our philosophical approach to project planning, design, and implementation:
Holistic Design Approach
SCHADUF believes that architecture and landscape architecture are inextricably linked, and that successful projects integrate buildings, landscape, open space, and circulation into a coherent whole greater than the sum of individual parts.
Build on Previous Studies and ‘‘Base Information’’
We recognize that there may be an existing inventory of planning and architectural base information upon which to develop concepts. Working with materials already in place, SCHADUF will explore ideas to create a comprehensive identity and vision for the project.
Emphasize a Strong Project Identity
Through background research, interviews, and public input, we strive to create a project identity that is supported and embraced by all the key stakeholders and the community at-large.
Coordinated Team Process
SCHADUF excels as part of a design team that includes the Client, other consultants, and the community.
SCHADUF’s ability to perform in a team environment is best exemplified by the large number of financially successful, award-winning projects SCHADUF has completed while a part of an extend design team.
4. METHODOLOGY
Our approach towards Landscape Architecture or urban design projects involves the following key steps:
Listen
The first and most important step is to listen; listen to the client’s goals, project team members and government agencies. A thorough project team engagement and workshop process is the central component of the project. Our project will generate a vision that is built on common consensuses and responds to realistic development opportunities for the site. We will do so in a manner that is founded on an understanding of the project needs and integrates design excellence, engineering intelligence, regulatory savvy, and market-wisdom.
Synthesize
Through the visioning process with the client, project team and data gathering, SCHADUF seeks to find the shared interests and goals. Providing new strategies for connecting the community with the surrounding environmental, physical, and infrastructural assets. Using SCHADUF’s regional experience, SCHADUF will benchmark most current trends in community development and assist the project team to visualize a broader perspective to the region.
Create
We are a studio-based organization with over 10 years of creativity. We approach projects knowing that the best ideas are the result of collaboration, research, and respect. We design respecting the varying views of others, with an eye towards innovation while searching for solutions; all hurdles are approached with passion, devoid of preconceived notions. As a result, planning and urban design work will be built on the strength of place, creating an imaginative, memorable, and livable community that adds value to the lives of residents and businesses.
Establishing Spatial Identity
Our team believes in the uniqueness of place. Our projects are rooted in the cultural, social, and environmental history of the site establishing innovative forms of spatial identity with enough flexibility to adapt to economic, social and environmental change. Our goal is to highlight, create potential, add to what exists and represent what the project team firmly believes into creation of an iconic and fully integrate place making.
A strong, inspired physical form adds value to any project. Our vision plan will create a place that captures the imagination and affection of the project team. We define character through the careful design, placement, and interrelationships of urban elements and development program. Urban elements the various architectural and landscape forms that communicate the character of a project may be described conceptually within guidelines or specified in more detailed design documents. Programmatic organization establishes how a project functions, creating an overall sense of place through concentration of urban activities and unique distribution of event spaces and development uses.
Urbanism, Landscape & Architecture
We believe that landscape and architecture are inseparable parts of urban design and planning. Urban open space frameworks not only support the ecological system but provide places for people to gather, hold events and recreate. Block structures reinforce these frameworks, creating environments that are pedestrian-friendly, appropriately oriented for the project use, and scaled to handle a variety of infrastructural services.
Urban massing shapes space it defines urban places. As part of the master plan, we will provide building massing with recommendations for development typologies.
We collaborate with our clients to develop site layouts, building program requirements and guidelines, employing urban massing to form city parks, plazas, corridors, and courtyards. These interrelationships call for sensitive understanding of how various development typologies relate massing to program and form to use from the scale of the individual building to the viability of an entire urban framework ensuring that built products create the desired definition of space and function according to the required program.
High-Performance Infrastructure
To provide cost efficiencies and promote long-term sustainability, we look for opportunities to incorporate flexible, “soft” infrastructure into the critical networks of the city including water, transportation, and energy. These infrastructural systems promote dispersion over centrality, resiliency over brute force, providing new design opportunities even within existing urban settings.
We view neglected spaces such as highway interchanges, canals, rivers, transportation corridors, or abandoned industrial and residential sites as opportunities for intervention and re-use. Multifunctional development involving vegetation or reforestation, storm water management, natural systems restoration, wildlife habitat expansion, energy farming and other strategies can activate discarded areas by providing urban activities while enhancing the capacity of these spaces to provide new infrastructure.
Integrated Mobility
Our expertise in transit and public realm design provides a comprehensive approach to mobility. Parking locations, sidewalk widths, gathering spaces, seating opportunities, car speed, and street spatial definition are intrinsically linked to traffic flow. Sensitively placed parking structures, sided with retail, can strengthen a street’s pedestrian scale. Thus, it is imperative that the urban design components of the city are considered in tandem with the traffic considerations, an integrated approach to mobility. All strategies that promote the integration of parking with walkability and bankability should be considered.
Making it Real
We have planned, designed, and built hundreds of award-winning projects both nationally and internationally. We are planners, architects, and engineers who plan to build - when we draw, we are thinking of the details. Our work is both innovative and practical, respective of site context, community, and cost. For the Grapevine planning, our work will bring all our years of experience to create a plan that can be realized.
Our team will give attention to the creating a plan that sets a foundation to ensure that future investment is channeled productively with our client’s interests protected.
