sharjah heritage area public i gallery + workshop arc 302 spring 2014 description

The studio is concerned with developing an understanding of structural systems. Earlier studies of various projects were produced ahead of focusing on a single system. The client is a fabricator in need of a gallery and workshop space to develop his designs. The project was located in an empty site on the edge of Sharjah’s Heritage Area, a zone that is being developed to preserve the emirate’s culture and art scene.

concept

Developing a greater understanding of fabric based structures, and the site’s location, the concept was to turn the gallery into an uninterrupted passage way lined with the display areas for the client’s work. The curvy central wall allows for niches where work can be displayed, while on the opposite side provide additional space to house the various equipments of the workshop. Topped with skylights, this allows for interesting light conditions within the space.

Following the announcement that Dubai will be hosting the 2020 World Expo, various development projects were announced. As part of the early developments, a cultural cluster was proposed to present the theme of the expo and display models of the participating pavilions.

concept

With the site being in an under-developed area, the concept was to create masses that project out of the land. The solid mass contrasts with the flat empty site creating a unique visual quality to the architecture. An elevated garden / plaza compliments the masses introduced as a means to break their strong solidity. The link between the ground and the elevated plaza was created via various pocket gardens on the ground floor. From the main ground plaza, a ramp is what takes you to the entrance, the gallery spaces reaching all the way up-to the first level. This aided in creating a unique gallery space and a more engaging circulation system.

mleiha i sharjah public - cultural i retreat arc 402 spring 2015 description

Mleiha is a small quiet town and a potential place for retreat. Approximately 65 km away from central Sharjah, Mleiha is an interesting spot for developing recreational facilities that caters to the growing art community.

concept

As part of this comprehensive study studio, a full set of construction documents was to be developed for a retreat complex. The complex was inspired by various aspects of the site. The general path and positioning of residences considered the views as well as current site conditions, where minimal intervention was desired to maintain the area. Reducing the ecological footprint was a major factor in the design process resulting in having most of the spaces elevated from the ground level by means of branching columns. The program of the project involved a cultural building that houses a gallery, restaurant, offices and workshop spaces, while the residences were compromised of living quarters and an art studio.

description

With a growing population, Sharjah was in need of a new waterfront development that activates Al Khan Lagoon. With a shift towards more pedestrian friendly projects like Flag Island, Majaz waterfront and Al Qasba, a new hot spot was to be conceived on the empty plot within the artifical lake.

concept

With an attention to pedestrian flow, our project aimed to continue the circulation pattern and extend it to the island. Providing a series of commercial spots, parks and residences facing the water internally and externally, a unique waterfront development was created. A running track that runs along the internal lagoon across the various islands activates the entire island. The form was inspired by the cone shell and sea foam, resulting in the creation of connected fields. Each field provides several activities and services for the public and the residents.

description

Almost Natural attempts to explore the production of space and aesthetics in the Anthropocene through blurring between the natural and the synthetic. The aim of this agenda is to present an attitude that utilizes advanced digital design ideas and non-linear fabrication to define what Almost Natural can mean.

concept

An architecture that extends the earth is the concept behind this project which was inspired by Paleontology. The monolithic form aims to amplify the massiveness of earth into becoming inhabitable conditions. This is also explored through establishing a relationship between a tectonic shell and stereotomic earth that is similar to the relationship between the skeleton and the skin, adding a protective layer that covers the inhabitable form. The program, a collector’s residence, is a spatial experience that begins underground (mass), transforms to a synthetic surface, ending with natural voids.

concept

The form of the artwork is derived from three elements of Islamic architecture: Arch profiles that can be found in temples, mosques and houses throughout the region. These forms are common in three of the cities that linked the Silk Road. As a construct, these three profiles are placed in line with one another and lofted with a unifying skin to create a “new” recognition of architectural shelter, one that is new to the eyes, yet born from ancient forms.
