ANALYSES OF HAMRA,BEIRUT
BÜKE UYGUR - MUVAFFAK ALİ AKYÜZ - BEYZA ZEYTUN
After the pandemic, explosion and years of economic crisis, Beirut has been a place for migrant workers, unemployed people, refugees, women with no platform to raise their voice and LGBTIQ+ people who live under pressure. Our idea was to gather people from different cultures and try to make them connect with each other. This community shelter will become a place where they can work, contribute, live, educate themselves and feel safe. There are a lot of different non profit organizations in Lebanon that supports these groups. The community shelter that we design will be an open space for everyone who wants to contribute and needs a safe space.

Main roads are more global and for public usage.Important buildings are on main street. People from different economic groups can intersect.
These streets connect the roads and create circulation. This is a mixture of a more crowded life and a private life.
Dead end streets are private and they create communities as well as new spaces.

We wanted to see how the congestion of the city affects the view of the sky. We realized that gaps in the sky may occur due to the height differences that occur depending on the old and new buildings.

Lebanon was under Ottoman occupation from 1516 to 1918.
It was occupied in France in 1918. It officially declared independence on January 1, 1944.
In Lebanon, where Shiites, Sunni Arabs, Druzes and Christians lived together, the conflicts between different elements turned into a civil war that started in 1975 and continued until 1990.The Cold War, the founding of Israel, and the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian immigrants into Lebanon drove the delicate political balances in the country into conflict. The civil war killed about 200,000 people in Lebanon. About 350,000 people were injured. The civil war between different religions and sects in Lebanon ended with the signing of the Taif Treaty of Saudi Arabia's Taif Command in 1989.
In 2006, when Hezbollah killed 3 Israeli soldiers and captured 2 of them, 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon began. The war ended in Israel's defeat.
On August 4, 2020, the ammonium nitrate stored in the Port of Beirut exploded in a fire. This showed the effect of a bomb and destroyed the center of the city. Thousands of people lost their homes, jobs and relatives. Hundreds of people lost their lives.
