DESIGN PROCESS

Project Type: Art Gallery Date: Autumn 2016 Location: Kasai, Tabriz Visualization by: Khashayar Mansourizadeh

A R T G A L L E R Y

This project is located in Tabriz’s jungle park site, so one the notable materials which could be used in this building was wood. Also wood is a renewable and sustainable material which makes no harm to natural environment. Thus, one of the first and major trends of the design process was creating a sustainable building. The shape of the building has inspired by the limits of the art and has created in a way which induces the feeling of limitation from outside and the impact of this limitation in flourishing inherent talents of artists; this is the fact which all artists has faced once. To exacerbate this feeling and also making some space for more floors, half of the building is pulled up, creating a sharp edge .This form also materializes the feeling of old houses with sloping roofs. From the inside, the interior space is designed in a way which limits the natural light and only lets it pass through some narrow gaps in deconstructed walls and sloping roof. This also creates a strong

artistic environment in which the only notable things are the art pieces themselves. The shape of the three upper floors is designed in a way which induces the feeling of suspending and open relationship between different art pieces. Other parameters such as stairs, platforms, etc. are contributing to the whole form of the building. The structure of the building is a unique combination of space structure with diagonal columns, with a shell structure for the roof. In the sloping half of the building, the roof of the structure is also considered as the façade of the building from the southern view. The site plan of the project is also contributing to the whole shape of the building and is comprised of some platforms, inspired by the ancient Persian architecture style of constructing.

One of the major predicaments which most of the mega cities are now experiencing is the problems caused by environmental pollutants and green gas emissions. Regarding the ISNA (Iranian Students’ News Agency), 70% of nations’ GDP (Gross Domestic Production) is produced in cities and it has been anticipated that up until 2030 this rate will hit 90%; therefore, optimizing the energy consumption and sustainable development of cities are crucial in the present century. According to estimated statics, energy use in Iran is 5 or 6 times more than the global average and even 10 times more than Europe. Also domestic energy consumption rate in Iranian mega cities like Tabriz and Tehran in the 6 cold months of the year is 3 times more than petrol and gasoline. This has blanketed the cities with CO2 and caused lung cancer and bronchitis among many

02

other diseases. Regarding these statics, the best solution to enhance the quality of life in mega cities and the national economic growth seems to be the sustainable development of buildings. The first step in design process was fulfilling the neighbouring trends and their demands for natural sunlight and view; because in northern vicinity of the project most of the buildings are less than 8 floors and with regard to the project’s 70-100-meter height, their southern natural sunlight absorption would be hindered. Thus, the project has been shaped with an opening in its central part and height concentration in its sides to provide the natural sunlight for northern vicinities and view over the fascinating OwnEbn-e-Ali Mountain’s nature for southern neighbourhoods. Since Tabriz has a biting cold weather in more than 8 or 9 months of year, the main purpose of this project was enhancing the proportion of natural sun heat absorption. Regarding the conducted researches, the best angle range towards sun rays in order to maximize the sun heat absorption in cold months and prevent over-heating in hot months is 0-45 degrees; the reason is that the sun is located in this range in 8 cold months and after that in hot months is in 53-85 degrees towards the horizon. Thus, the project is comprised of 2 main blocks with commercial and residential sections, each divided into 18 equal parts and each part perched in 0-45 degrees range regarding its function. Hence, because commercial sections don’t need a lot of natural sunlight and residential parts inherently need a maximum proportion of it, these 18 equal parts have been shaped in a range of 0 degree in commercial sections up to 45 degrees towards sun rays in residential sections. The third step, was implementing new technologies such as “Sunergy Windows” in order to control the sun heat absorption and optimize it in cold months and decrease it in hot months with the same light absorption. Also “Opaque Photovoltaic Panels” have been applied on concrete diagonal columns to make the building the first zero-building of Tabriz and make it entirely independent of exterior energy sources.

The first step in designing this project was paying attention to local demands and trends of people and combining them with other factors such as Tehran’s climatic issues. So the whole form of the building has been inspired by some local shapes and buildings, creating the chance of integration between this new project and other surrounding buildings. To catch the all views of the city, the building is divided into two parts, both standing on a mutual lobby level. A huge concrete shell has designed between these two buildings to hinder the view of them over each other. The connection of these two parts is crystalized by a three-story bridge and the mutual lobby and restaurant levels. A R C H I T E C T U R A L

This project is located in one of the prominent and populated sites of Tabriz, which is considered as the heart of the northern city town, Valiasr. Thus, every day numerous people visit this site and somehow feel inherently connected to it, so the first and most important task of designing this project was constructing a social environment in which people deeply feel a converge between themselves and the building. In the field of fulfilling this aspiration, the project has formed in a shape which connects both upper (pedestrian) and down (street) levels of the structure. The entire form of the building is also designed in a shape that lets people easily transport up and down in the site and makes the whole environment as a sole social space. The shape of the building also gives people a unique chance to stay and spend some time, looking around and enjoying the outstanding environment. Hence, this project has transformed a solid unsocial environment to a unique extremely social one.

Street Street

Street

The only story of the building which is seeable from the street level is allocated to classes and other related spaces. The other levels are comprised of stores, cinema halls, parking spaces and art galleries which inherently don’t need natural light, so they are located in underground levels.

This challenge was a summer project in on of the prominent districts of Tabriz’s Bazar, Haj-Hossein order. The issue was to construct an urban element which contributes to solve public matters and make an inherent connection between existing buildings and the new element. After examining numerous models, the conclusion was to create an element which makes NO LIMITS and let the people make their own interpretation of how to use that structure. In other words, we strived to use the existing elements which have made an intimacy there, and use them as cross points between the new structure and the old ones. By this idea, the way of using this element by a child totally differs from an adults use, because the interpretation of this structure alters from a person to another. Thus, we mixed the crucial factors such as culture, sustainability, intimacy, creativity of users and their demands, to build a prominent element in one of the popular and notable urban areas of our city. The construction site comprised of 2 diagonal trees which were close to fall; so we created a bench which holds these trees and protect them against destruction. Also, we didn’t hinder the power of imagination and creativity of our users. We deconstructed the traditional form of a bench and made the element as an ivy which starts in zero-level and reaches the levels of seating and table in upper parts, also holding the tree trunks and acts as a conservational element in the site. Fortunately the users and shopkeepers loved the idea and let us built the element.
