The Typography Study

Concept

The Typography Study was originated from a charcoal drawing of the letter M. The next step was to create a three-dimension model of the letter. Throughout the process, the shape became the foundation for the sketches and the models. One of the goals was to see M form the multiple sides and through different triangle like volumes.

Number 1 is the M sketch and the other sketch is experimenting using geometry to create an abstract drawings of the letter M.

Exploring 3 dimensional forms based on the sketches and exploring more triangular forms to represent the letter M

Final Model

Process + Drawings

Throughout more of the process models, although the shapes and volumes changed and evolved, the essence of the letter M can still be seen throughout the models as seen in the two following diagrams.

Florida Panther Pavillion

Florida Panther Pavillion

The endangered Florida Panthers lice in Florida in a marshland typography. The goal was to interpret the animal based on its environment and its habits. The flow of the animal and its speed became the inspiration throughout the pavilion. The programmatic requirements were, an entry space, a space of contemplation, and a space of exit.

One of the factors about marshland is the perspective of hierarchy through the relationship of the plot of land and the water. I used the landscape of the marshland as inspiration for the landscape of the pavilion. This is so that as the people are walking in the pavilion, they may have the same experience as a Florida panther.

Process

Throughout the process, I first focused on movement and imagined a Florida panther, running through the space as seen in model 1 through 3. I then simplified the movement lines to more concise patterns. I then incorporated marshland for the landscape in model 4.

The Camera Door

The Camera Door

The goal of this project was to create an unconventional door that would provide a great experience for the user. Due to my interest in photography and cameras, I chose a camera to be my inspiration for this door project. The “camera door” replicates the function and the experience of using a camera through the use of light and shape. As the individual pulls the handle, the door opens up into a circle, which replicates the lens of a camera. The tilted windows replicates the rolling shutter effect which is when object are slanted in videos due the speed of the camera, such as in a fast moving vehicle.

Process + Explanation

The beginning of the project first consisted of experimenting with numerous little models. The goal was to play around with movement of different parts and planes.

The Basquiat House

Process

The jean Michel Basquiat house is an artist studio home on a billboard located in Hialeah, Miami Florida. The house is for Jean Michel Basquiat, an artist who was born in the 60s, rose to fame in the beginning of the 80s but unfortunately died in 1988 due to drug overdose. Before building the studio home, the first task was to create a diagram about the artist.

For the diagram I create a collage about his life, being raised in New York and having experienced homelessness. I also showed some of his art in the diagram but deconstructed. This came from the perception of how his life was never stable even though he had much success in his art.

The second bottom piece is an art piece inspired by Basquiat using the diagram and using Basquiat’s technique. I used multiple colored pastel chalks and drew over the diagram to emphasize the parts of Basquiat’s life that was more important, such as his homelessness and his artist style.

When designing the studio, I wanted to use Basquiat’s extreme use of color for the coloring of the home. I also wanted to use the concept of extrusion throughout the building, this was inspired from the visually strong ar- tistic style of Basquiat as it seems as if his art is jumping at you due to his strong use of colors and shapes. I ex- panded this concept in the skylight above the bedroom and the all glass transition space with the red wall.

Drawings

The two figures in the longitudinal section shows Basquiat as a child and when he became famous as an artist. I wanted to expand on Basquiat’s transition from being a young ambitious child to a successful superstar artist (his dream), which led him to take drugs and eventually dying of drug overdose.

The Oasis Tower

Site Analysis + Site Diagrams

As I analyzed the site, I realized that Atlanta had a big water circulation issue. This is due to the granite layer that is found under the city which comes from the granite rock called stone mountain This layer makes water less circulatory underground. The second issue is that the water reservoirs are too far away. Allatoona is 30 miles and Lake Lanier is 36 miles. Many states such as Georgia, Mississippi and Florida are also fighting for the Chattahoochee river. To minimize the issue, the city built a quarry 2 miles from the city, the size of three Mercedes Benz stadiums. Knowing this information about the site’s water issues, it became a priority of mine to make the water use of the building recyclable.

CONCEPT AND DEVELOPMENT

The Oasis Tower is located in 123rd Marietta Street across the Olympic park. The high rise includes a restaurant, an interactive water management room, a park, office and residential spaces. The Oasis tower strives to represent sustainability, containing green walls from organic concrete to trees on balconies blocking the sun light. The Oasis tower also has a great water management system, recycling 100% of its water on site using its green roof. This water management achievement also happened through xeriscape plants, which uses less water than regular plants. The interactive management room serves as an informing space to learn to better manage our wa- ter in the city of Atlanta. In addition, the inspiration of the Oasis tower stems from the flow of water, bridg- ing the gap from the Olympic fountain to our site. The flow of water can also be seen through the building’s elevation through its curvature and its landscaping. The Oasis also features a waterfall at the connection of the office spaces and residential spaces, thus pro- viding both parties details on our water management system. Being in the center of Atlanta, the oasis tow- er serves as a multiuse building, providing office spac- es, residential homes learning interaction and a park where families could enjoy.

In the Beginning

Crown Heights: Site + Community

The crown heights conflict is an issue that started from the death of a 7-year-old boy named Gavin Cato and the injury of his cousin Angela Cato by a Jewish man Yankel Rosenbaum who ran them over. This sparked the already underlying conflict between the blacks and the Jews in Brooklyn. There were numerous riots and casualties because of those riots. The riots lasted from August 19 through the 21st. The 19th being the incident with the two children. Within the riots, a man named Lemrick Nelson stabbed Rosenbaum to the death, he was then sent to jail. This led to a bigger chaos as Jews were upset with the riots and blacks demanding respect from the city.

Lemrick Nelson Angela Cato Gavin Cato Yankel Rosenbaum

General Information The site is in 1 Lefferts Ave. There is pedestrian walkway all around the site. Most vehicular circulation is on Washington Ave, the second most is Flatbush Ave and the least is on Lefferts Ave. The noise coming to the site will be mainly from the train station on its left and usual traffic.

The next part of the project was to create a cube that represents the conflict. I got inspired by the identity of the two groups and wondered how they can find a path to peace. The cube represents the path to peace by starting from the side of the conflict then move to the place of peace. This can be seen from the wooden pattern that goes around the box representing the path to peace.

Property Ownership In Brooklyn, Jews now own most of the property there, and black own minimal land. At first there were many Jews in the area, but an influx of Caribbean came in the Jews left. When the Jews saw that the Caribbean were fixing the houses and the property levels were going up, they chose to come back. Caribbean sold the houses because they didn’t want to be a part of all the Jews. Blacks are also mixed in the equation, many blacks who have owned their land sold out the land because of the many Jewish individuals who were moving in the area. In addition, they moved out because of culture matters. Jews like staying together because on certain days they don’t use vehicular transportation. Many individuals, such as Spike Lee have stated that Brooklyn is being gentrified, but one can argue that it is not so much about gentrification but rather the desire of Black people to leave a certain area because their preference does not align with the other group’s preference.

Conceptual Definitions and statements

Shinning light on what is common about us instead of what is different. So that we can grow.

Genesis: the origin or mode of formation of something. Shining light upon: giving out or reflecting bright light; exposing something shining light upon something, making it known. Giving it more importance. Conceptual statements “In the beginning, God created” The earth brought forth vegetation plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1: 12 Genesis is a commonality for both people because the first people were black from Africa and Judaism is the first major religion. Seed and Light How light affects us and our growth and our mind.

The first sketch represents shining light on what’s common about the Jews and blacks instead of what’s different. The six triangles on each side represents closed off informational pods about each group and the walkway in the middle is where they walk together after learning about each other.

This sketch shows the concept of beginning affecting the shapes of the space as I come from triangles to more wholesome shapes like circles.

1.The first picture is a theatre in Africa. In the picture you can see how the open space allow everyone to come together. Through the canopy structure, you can see how the openings, especially the skylight affect how the space is perceived.

2. The second picture is from my precedent study, Morris Aboretum regarding the perspective of beginning. I use the concept of birds in a nest in their beginning stages to represent genesis.

4.The open air theatre by Studio Akkerhuis inspired the use of bamboo inside the space
