Many college students enter the workforce with a passion for volunteering. They may need to complete a certain number of hours to graduate high school, or they may want to add community service to their resume for college applications. When college students start their first year, however, many of them forget about their volunteer hours. Instead, they may participate in extracurricular activities and academic programs. These aren’t bad things, but it’s important to consider the benefits of continued volunteering in college. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that higher education levels are associated with higher levels of volunteering. In 2015, over 38% of college graduates participated in volunteering. Here are some reasons why you should too.

Many high school students have volunteer experience on their resumes, but fewer college students are able to do so after graduating. If you’re able to commit the time, volunteering may be worth it. Being able to manage your time well and being a team player are some of the characteristics that employers look for in people they hire, and are skills built through volunteering. Many companies also encourage their employees to participate in volunteering projects. These projects can help boost your resume and highlight your community service experience. Getting involved in community service can also help boost your financial aid package. Many scholarships and grants require community service as a condition of receiving aid. Once you start volunteering, it’s easy to keep doing it.
ADD TO YOUR NETWORK Getting involved in volunteering can also help you meet new people. It can be a great way to meet people who are interested in the same things as you, and program coordinators can help you find job opportunities that you may not have heard about. If you’re interested in working in health care or nursing, volunteering at a free clinic near campus can be a great way to find a job. These positions can also help you build a strong social network. You’ll also be able to meet people from different backgrounds. Having a strong social network can also help you find people who share your interests.
PERSONAL GROWTH Regardless of the reason you decide to volunteer, it’s important to consider the positive effects it can have on the communities in which it operates. By giving back to the people who need help, volunteering can make a real difference. Aside from building on your existing skills, volunteering can also help you develop new ones. For instance, if you’re interested in becoming more outgoing, finding a position that will help improve your communication skills is a great way to go. Even if you’re not exactly sure what you want to do with your life, volunteering can help you develop skills that will allow you to excel in different areas. If you’re not a good organizer or have a hard time finishing tasks, volunteering can help you improve.
