OVERVIEW The establishment of a comprehensive horticulture database is crucial for ensuring effective planning to facilitate a systematic development of the horticulture sector in the country. The data also helps in exploiting the huge export potential for the sector. The present “Hand book on Horticulture Statistics has been divided into seven different sections dealing with Socio-Economic indicators, Outlays and Expenditure under Horticulture activities, Area and Production of Horticulture crops, Prices and Arrivals, Export and Import of Horticulture Produce, Consumption of Horticulture crops and World Scenario. The share of plan outlay for Horticulture in Agriculture which was 3.9% during Ninth Plan has increased to 4.6% during the current Twelfth Plan. This share was 11.6% during the Eleventh Plan. The actual expenditure for National Horticulture Mission increased from Rs.917.33 crore during 2007-08 to Rs. 1809.56 crore during 2013-14. Total expenditure on horticulture research and development (Plan & Non Plan) during the Eleventh Plan (2007-08 to 2011-12) Plan was Rs. 1383.13 crore. The area under horticulture crops which was 12.77 million hectares during 19911992 has increased to 23.69 million hectares during 2012-13. The total production during this period has increased by nearly 2.8 times and corresponding productivity has increased 1.5 times.
As compared to 257.1 Million Tonnes of food grain production during 2012-13, the total horticulture production was 268.9 Million Tonnes. The annual growth rates for area and production of horticulture crops during 2012-13 over 2011-12 were 1.9% and 4.5% respectively. Percentage share of vegetables production in the total horticulture production was highest (60.3 % during 2012-13) as compared to other horticulture crops. i
The total horticulture production was highest in case of West Bengal (292 lakh MT) followed by Andhra Pradesh (289.13 lakh MT).During 2012-13, the highest production of fruits of 139.39 lakh MT was recorded in Andhra Pradesh (17.1% share) followed by 97.85 lakh MT in Maharashtra (12%). Likewise, the highest production of vegetables (15.7%) was in West Bengal followed by 12.1% in Uttar Pradesh.
Tamil Nadu has the highest share of production of flowers (loose) during 2012-13 and in case of cut flowers, West Bengal has the highest share of 33.14%.In case of spices, Andhra Pradesh contributed the major share of 20.7% in terms of production.
ii
During 2013-14 the total value of export of horticulture produce from India to different countries was Rs. 14365 crore. Export of flowers from India was about Rs. 456 crore. The percentage share of calorie intake from fruits and vegetables has increased from 6.9% in 2004-05 to 7.0% in 2009-10 in rural areas and 7.2% to 8.0% in urban areas during the corresponding period.
Among the major fruit producing countries, India ranks number two after China. Similarly, in case of vegetables, India is the second largest producing country in the World, next to China.
