A Passion for Individuals, Families and Communities, Today and Tomorrow

Form 7103

Our success as a company depends on our ability to help people protect what is important to them, and on our efforts to effect positive change in our communities. Each year Kemper Home Service Companies strives to make a positive difference in people’s lives by providing affordable insurance coverage to modest income individuals and families. This is not just our mission, but it’s our passion. This is our commitment to our customers, employees and shareholders as a responsible corporate citizen. It is our promise to our communities, to help them grow and prosper. In 2013, we supported over 200 local organizations and provided over $140,000 in scholarships to students. Helping our customers protect who and what they love, prepare for life’s uncertainties, through building personal relationships. This is our role in improving the lives of those around us.

A message from Ed Konar, President, Kemper Home Service Companies

Home Service not only means we provide personalized service to our customers in their homes; it means we are active in our communities. We help our communities.

We give time and financial resources to local charities in and around the communities where we live and work. Since we began the program, KemperCares has helped nearly 2,500 community based organizations. We have donated almost 1.4 million dollars and volunteered over 50,000 hours to charitable organizations in the communities where we live and work. Last year alone we contributed financial support and volunteer hours to 210 local community based organizations! The Kemper Home Service Companies, however, focuses on two major areas as we serve others. One is community involvement. It is the nature of the home service business to be involved in our communities as we build strong personal relationships with our policy holders. The second focus in education. We recognize the importance of education and understand that today’s youth will become tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, researchers, doctors and business professionals. Investment in education is an investment in our future, which is why we provide scholarships and assistance for

the children and grandchildren of our policy holders. The bottom line is, we give back! We give back to our local communities, neighborhoods, and policyholder’s in a way few other companies do. Throughout this report, you will see numerous examples and testimonials of how the employees of the Kemper Home Service Companies serve their communities around the country. These are just a small sampling, but I hope it shows you how involved we really are. We are all very proud of our work and accomplishments in our local communities, and we look forward to serving the places where our policy holders live and work now and in the years to come.

Trust Trust is one of our core values, and it is a critical part of everything we do. Trust is the one thing that can build or destroy every human relationship. The lack of trust will bring down the most powerful countries, bankrupt the most profitable companies, and destroy the happiest of marriages. However, trust can also produce the most successful companies and strongest of personal relationships. By striving to be the best in the home service business, doing what we say we will do, and being who we say we will be, we have become the most successful home service insurance business in the United States. We believe in being simple and straightforward, showing respect and loyalty to our employees and customers, and always working to get better, and staying focused on delivering results. Our Mission We help people protect what they love the most— their loved ones and their possessions—and help them to prepare for life’s uncertainties by offering affordable insurance coverage through personal home service relationships. Our Values Our goal is to create superior customer and shareholder value as the premier home service company in the insurance industry. We strive to accomplish this goal by operating in accordance with the highest ethical and moral standards. We live by the golden rule, by treating others like we would want to be treated. Our customers are our highest priority, along with our employees and our shareholders.

Improving the lives of individuals, families and communities, for today and tomorrow

The Kemper Home Service Companies recognize the importance of education and know that today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. We are proud to sponsor two scholarship programs for the children and grandchildren of our policyholders. Congratulations to all of scholarship recipients to date, and we look forward to helping more young people realize the dream.

Step Up For Students Step Up For Students is the nonprofit organization responsible for administering the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship program. The scholarship program is available to students who qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch and provides tuition assistance to the private school of their parents’ choice or transportation help to an out-of-district public school. Kemper Home Service Companies first partnered with Step Up in 2012, and we continued our partnership in 2013 by contributing $100,000 to the scholarship program. Thus far, we have provided 42 scholarships for low-income Florida students. 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility Report l 07 - 08

SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHTS Thanks to your generous efforts, I am able to be successful throughout my matriculation in college while focusing more on academics and less on financial aid. Without scholarship patrons like you, many students such as myself would not be as successful and would be unable to pursue their destined careers. Ya’Shika Solomon

I would like to say thank you so much for helping my college dreams come true. This specific scholarship has encouraged me to continue completing college and to continue to do well in school.

Words alone cannot express my sincere gratitude and gratefulness. Fortunately, I was awarded the United Insurance Scholarship in the amount of $5000.00. This scholarship will allow me to decrease my tuition bill and pay for books that are required. As a donor, you have demonstrated to me that you are concerned about my future, and for that I thank you.

There are no words to express how grateful I am to have received this scholarship. Thank you so much for considering and giving me this wonderful blessing.

Succeeding in my future allows me to establish an example for my three younger siblings that consider me their role model. Once again, I humbly thank you.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Creating a more promising tomorrow for communities everywhere

The Kemper Home Service Companies’ commitment to improving local communities is central to our shared vision of bringing out the good in people’s lives. After all, our communities are where we live and work, so we make every effort to help make them better places. People all across the company, from our district offices to our Home Office, from the executive staff to our field agents, are involved in our communities. Our engagement with our communities is an integral part of how we lead and who we are as a company. And, while we understand the power of our contributions, we know our ultimate strength lies in the personal and individual efforts of all of us who aspire to become champions for positive change. Sharing our talents to help others

KemperCares KemperCares provides a financial contribution to each participating district office for use in supporting a local community service program, charity or project of the district’s choosing. Several Home Office teams also participated in the St. Louis area. One of the few guidelines in choosing an organization is that the organization or activity chosen must provide a service or assistance to persons considered part of our customer base. The group chosen must provide evidence of being a 501c(3) (tax exempt) organization and actively involved in the community. The district’s gift must be used for a specific

program activity, and not for salaries or fringe benefits. In addition to providing this financial support the district must perform a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service in the community in which they are making the donation. Throughout the years, KemperCares has assisted over 2500 organizations and has donated over $1,350,000 back into the communities in which employees and policyholders of the Kemper Home Service Companies live and work.

“So far this year, we have served 10,835 meals to our community and United Insurance Company of America has contributed greatly to continue to make this possible.” Karen Yates Executive Director

“A few years ago we donated to the Red River Football League that is a youth football league for ages 6-12. Several times I had parents come up to me who had Union National as their Insurance Company and they really appreciated the fact that we were out there actually working during their games and also the fact that we donated money for something their children were a part of.”

“All the organizations we have worked with over the years provide something needed to the communities we work, but I find myself looking forward to this event each year as do the agents and managers that help due to the exuberance in the children and twinkle it put in their eyes.” Todd Jeffrey District Manager Dallas 33

Casual for a Cause A popular initiative this year in our Home Office in St. Louis was our Casual for a Cause program, in which employees could purchase casual jeans Thursdays for $1 per day on a weekly, monthly or annual basis. Our Home Office raised over $8,000, which was used to adopt 60 children of all ages from the St. Louis Crisis Nursery during the holiday season to provide them with and their families with gifts and needed items. Casual for a Cause was a huge success, and we are continuing the program again in 2014.

United Way Every year the Kemper Home Service Companies partner with the United Way and conduct campaign drives within the companies. Home Office and field employees are encouraged to participate in this worthy cause through various donations. The Kemper Home Service Companies is proud to support the United Way through employee donations and company matching contributions.
