ABOUT ME_ “Each material has its own characteristic that we must understand in order to use it. -Mies Van Der Rohe Having a multicultural family background, I had always been interested in learning about the different life, living, and works of different Indian cultures. The old villages back home with their intricately designed beautiful houses sparked an interest in me to learn about how these houses turned into family homes and how these came to define the whole village society. Modern day houses might just be boxes built from brick and mortar, but the insides of these similar looking structures are what distinguished them from one another. With the aim of helping people achieve such individuality, I entered this career of Interior Designing. Being the first creatively inclined child in a household full of scientists and engineers it was definitely hard for me to make them understand my passion for art, but my work spoke for itself. I redecorated our bungalow back home and that acted as the proof of my abilities and even though I’d completed my schooling in the science field, my parents felt confident in letting me pursue a career in design. Raffles Design International, Mumbai, which is where I completed my Bachelors from, was based in Singapore with branches all around the world. The international exposure and lecturers from all around the world taught us the universal language of Interiors and encouraged me to come to the west and learn about their advanced ways and thoughts on Interiors. Which is how I found myself here and went on to explore and understand the world of Interiors even more!

Retail Design

DECATHLON Decathlon is a European sports store brand that is launching in the American market with it’s f lagship store in San Francisco. Their stores in Europe and Asia all follow a warehouse style design with all items displayed on wire racks and cork boards and have minimal artistic feel to the space. Our mission with this project was to develop a concept for the store that could be modular yet individualistic.

7

SITE ANALYSIS_ The store is located at 735 Market Street, San Francisco which is a prime location as the street is a shopping hub and is located in the heart of the city. The area mainly has commercial and retail stores around which makes it a tourist attraction as well. Being in such a high traffic area and being the flagship store, the design of the store needs to be eye-catching and creative yet modular. The public transportation is close by as well. MUNI stops with buses going in every direction in San Francisco are available at each block and BART trains connect to the bay area. The area is extremely walkable with a walkscore of 98 and market st has bike lanes as well.

CASE STUDY_ The existing decathlon stores all follow a warehouse style concept which is pretty basic and has simple aisles of different sports equipments. All stores across Europe and Asia are built to have wire racks that displays their thousands of products. No particular artistic concept can be observed through the stores except the color scheme of the brand.

11

01 02 03 0 4 05 06 Dec athlon

CONCEPT_ The concept for the store is inspired from the marketing strateg y that the brand showcased in the European market. Their adverts showed a marriage of the indoors and outdoors which I merged with a modern industrial design scheme to come up with a space that makes shopping in the store into an adventure of sorts. This is achieved by creating different spaces such as meet up area, coworking area, workshop area, and

Ret a il De sign

retail area that provide the customer with more things to do than just shop.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT_ Keeping the concept of the store in mind, I developed some sketches for the storefront and the interiors. A design element that seemed prominent in all theses sketches was the linear wooden planks that repeat on different surfaces across the entire store. Also, breaking away from traditional retail stores that usually just have display racks and pedestals was one of the main design focuses in my ideas.

FURNITURE PLAN_ The f loor space of the store is 9700 sqft. It is designed such that the meeting and coworking spaces are upfront in the first part of the store with an online order space where customers who already know what they want can place their orders and solve their doubts. The second part of the store has 5 setup areas that can be changed seasonally and a retail wall for customers. The bike workshop area is also in this section. The last part of the store is the main storage area where the main stock of the store is kept. The employee area is located in the storage space as well. There are also 2 bathrooms next to the workshop area.

STOREFRONT_ The wooden planks that protrude through the store act as an element that would pull the pedestrians’ attention towards it thus making the store stand out. Since this is the

Ret a il De sign

f lagship store of the brand, it needed a dominant visual representation that clearly indicates what the store is about. The planks inside the store can be mounted with different items according to the retail season. There are also 4 glass boxes that can be used to display the popular items. There are also 2 benches with slots for parking bikes for the customer’s convenience that flow with the store’s concept.

MATERIALS_ To maintain the industrial rustic feel of the space, concrete f looring has been used throughout the store. Wood is another dominant material that is used in the furniture and ceiling treatments. For the storefront, low e glass has been used to create a transparency between the store and the outside and being low e, it allows the light to penetrate but not the heat thus keeping the store bright yet cool. As for the color scheme, black and white along with the brand’s blue is prevalent

throughout the space to accentuate the products.

There is also a retail window available where pedestrians can buy items from. Apart from the Deca-Cafe, there is also the DecaTalks area where the staff managers are available to help out any customers who’d need help with anything. The display shelf in the Deca-Talks area showcases all the popular items that the store has to offer.

RETAIL AREAS_ The store has 2 main retail areas that differ from traditional retail racks. The main section consists of five 12’x12’ set up areas that are inspired from the ikea store style displays and showcase the products in the environment that they are intended to be used in. These areas are completely modular and can be changed up according to the retail shopping seasons. The displays are for show and if a customer wants to buy the items they can place an order at the display screen in the setup area. The other section consists of a huge wall that displays the clothing products and has tubes of the same clothing ready for sale right above them. The store has no cashwraps and the staff can help you check out and complete your purchases at any point within the store.

AMPLITUDE ANALYTICS Amplitude Analytics is a start-up firm in San Francisco which builds analytics that helps companies of any size gain valuable insights from user behavior. The team consists of mainly young enthusiastic people who mostly just work on a desk. The company is made up of two main teams-sales and engineering. The workspace is designed to be an open floor plan that breaks the professional hierarchy and creates unity.

47

SITE ANALYSIS_ The workspace is located at 501 2nd St, Ste. 100, San Francisco which is a part of the south beach district. Public transportation is easily available on 2nd st where MUNI bus stops are located on each block intersection and the Caltrain station is 3 blocks south of the location on 4th & King St. The MUNI Trams also operate throughout King St and Embarcadero. The Site is located on the first f loor hence the outside views consist of mainly the streets and adjacent buildings. There is a park across the street on 2nd St and Yerba Buena Gardens are 4 blocks north of the site on 4th and Mission St. Since the site is located close to the freeway and AT&T park and being on the first floor, street noises would be the main acoustical concern for the project. San Francisco has a consistent cool temperature however summers might be a bit dry. But, since the site is located near the Bay, cool winds are prevalent all throughout the year. The topography is extremely diverse but South Beach neighborhood is f lat and easily walkable. There is also a bike lane on 2nd st. The site has a Walkscore of 91.

CASE STUDY_ Carto is an analytics company located in Brooklyn, NY. Their workspace also consists mainly of young people hence the space created is youthful and energetic and also has retro arcade games in the meeting areas. The space follows an open floor plan and has a rustic industrial feel to it. The furniture choices could have been more ergonomic since most of the time is spent on the desks but the choices still match the concept.

50

51

01 02 03 0 4 05 06 A mplitude A na l y tic s

CONCEPT_ Amplitude wanted a space where the spaces blend with each other with ease and transparency was one of their main requirements in their workspace. Going with a warehouse feel with pops of blue and yellow to add energy into the space was the main idea behind the space’s interiors. Using durable material are sound absorbent was also a conscious decision because of the proximity to the busy streets. The ceilings are left exposed to give it a rustic feel.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT_ Keeping the concept in mind the bubble diagrams for the space were developed to incorporate the area requirements. To maintain transparency, glass walls in an industrial style were used for phone booths, conference and meeting areas . The sales team and engineering team get the main workspace with individual soft seating areas and the common cafe and brainstorming areas with white-board walls and paper rolls were also considered to be added. The acoustic paneling on the walls were also designed by being inspired from the logo of the company.

FURNITURE SELECTIONS_ Amplitude Analytics is mainly a workspace were most of their employees are on their desks throughout the day, hence good ergonomic chairs and desks were of utmost importance for the workspace. Comfortable yet firm lounge and cafe seating was also selected so the employees get a break from work but don’t spent too much time just lounging around. Phone booths where the employees communicate with clients also have club chairs to create a relaxed feel to the space and make it less claustrophobic.

WORKSPACES_ The two main workspaces for the sales and engineering team are identical in layout and furnishing but the distinguishing factors are the colors of the walls and columns. The sales team has yellow walls and columns whereas the engineering area is blue. Each area has their own soft seating spaces which can be converted into more desk space if the company expands and gets more employees. Felt panels in between the rows of desks also act as individual acoustic panels to soften bullpen noises as well. The Huge windows are kept bare and have Low E glass thus making the space not as hot. The screens also have anti-glare coverings to not get affected by the sunlight.

CAFE AND WAITING AREA_ The cafe area is a simple room with modular tables and chairs that are stackable and can be moved aside to convert this area into a big meeting area for office events. The cafe is connected to a simple kitchen that has a coffee counter and microwaves and ovens to heat the food that the employees get from home. The counter space in the kitchen can also be used for catering any events. The waiting area in the reception is pretty basic with couches and coffee tables.

There are 2 soft seating meeting rooms and 2 with tables and chairs. They all have a glass partition and a wall with clerestory windows for circulation. The brainstorm area is behind the meeting rooms and uses the solid wall of the meeting room as a whiteboard to collaborate ideas and thoughts. The tables and chairs here are modular as well to convert this space into a meeting area as well.

ALTO PHARMACY Alto Pharmacy is a new brand that modernized how people receive their medical prescriptions. The workspace consists of three main departments- sales, retail, and drivers. The workspace has a huge storage space that is stocked with the medicines and the drivers are the ones who deliver the prescriptions to the clients.

CASE STUDY_ GA MA Healthcare is a manufacturing and distribution specialist for medical supplements. Ref lecting GAMA’s distinct personality, their new informal and openplan office environment has been designed with an industrial look and feel and includes meeting room facilities, a variety of work settings and several hot desks. To improve connectivity, a staircase has been installed at the core of the building, linking the two floors and creating a sense of openness.

CONCEPT_ Alto being a new fresh brand deserved a space that is clean, simple, elegant, and modern. The color palette consists of whites and neutrals from pine wood, which are also the main focus of the space. Since medicines are full of chemicals, making the interiors as natural as possible creates a nice contrast. The shelves are designed such that the medicines can be effortlessly divided according to different brands. Planning the space

C ommercia l De sign

to keep privacy of different employee teams yet having an open floor plan was the idea.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT_ Keeping the concept of the store in mind, the workspace was laid out such that the sales team, drivers, and retail areas are all properly segregated yet not walled in. For the retail area, the shelves were the main focus of the space and hence designed to be modular to create separation within different brands of medicines seamlessly. The space is pretty dingy and the only source of light is the glass doors at the entrance, hence a skylight has been added over the mezzanine level to provide more natural light. The drivers area also needed to be secured as they should not have access to the amenities of the workspace, hence a walled in area with open ceiling has been developed. The drivers only have access to the window on the retail area side where they would receive the medicines for delivery.

FURNITURE PLAN_ The workspace has a total area of 6450 sqft which is divided in 2 levels- level 1 and mezzanine. There are 2 entries into the store, one opens into the retail area and the other opens in the lounge area. The drivers have access to the lounge door but cannot check into the main workspace. Level 1 has 1200sqft of storage area that is temperature controlled, a lounge with a kitchen, a conference and meeting room, and the retail area. The sales team operates on the mezzanine level and has another conference and meeting room on the level as well. The staircase that leads up to the mezzanine level has been extended and tuned

into a seating space where team meetings could also take place.

SMITH RESIDENCE_ Located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the smith residence is right down the street from the Wyoming Retreat project from my portfolio. This residence was designed completely in 3DS Max and was built by using just the plans of the house. The concept of the home is mountain modern just like the Wyoming Retreat, however, this one focuses more on the warm tones rather than the cool ones. All the models(except the bedding) that

CARDBOARD CHAIR_ Buildings constitute about 70% of the Earth’s land, and all buildings have at least 65% furniture pieces in them. So in order to make a building sustainable, it is not only necessary to design the building envelope carefully, but also the furnishings. With the help of the cradle to cradle ideology and its certification, closed loop furniture that get diverted from the landfill are emerging as a new trend and providing customers with many sustainable options. I designed a lounge chair made completely out of recycled cardboard boxes which are, usually lying around unused in people’s houses after they order stuff online, and sheets. Individual boxes and sheets were cut into the cardboard frame and stuck together using Elmer’s school glue naturals. The lounge chair is convertible into a stool with removable arms that are attached to the seat using Velcro which is an excellent biomimicry example. The chair is also completely handcrafted thus utilizing net zeroenergy in its production.
