GOAL STEWARDSHIP | COMMUNITY The workshops served as an opportunity for NDC to understand the needs and concerns of the community. This also gave NDC the chance to establish a clear design direction and encourage students and teachers to become stewards of the courtyard, helping to ensure the longevity of the space. SITE CONDITIONS: USES RAIN + POLLINATORS + PLANTING BEDS Areas with high sun exposure and significant amounts of standing water, existing planting beds, and areas well suited for large amounts of planting are identified. These areas provide ideal conditions for pollinator gardens, rain gardens and native plantings.
SEATING + EATING + TEACHING Areas identified as having high sun exposure, large spaces for tables and chairs, and without significant amounts of standing water were selected as locations best suited for seating, eating, and teaching. In some cases spaces only met 2 out of the 3 criteria. However, it was determined that possible alternative interventions could be used to make these spaces habitable.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Create an inclusive multipurpose landscape that encourages collaboration among students and staff. Through the creation of FLEXIBLE outdoor spaces the courtyard can be easily adapted to meet the school’s many different needs. This outdoor learning courtyard will serve a range of ages and learning objectives, allowing for group learning, individualized work time, meditation, exploration and fun.

Create a space that is BEAUTIFUL, easy to maintain and clean. Maintenance, cleanliness and beautification were consistent concerns that emerged throughout the engagement process. This will be accomplished through the use of bright colors, student art, murals and enhanced plant material.

The Carrollton Outdoor Learning Courtyard aspires to be:
Create a landscape that transforms existing site conditions into opportunities for INTERACTION with nature. By utilizing the existing stormwater for rain gardens, wildlife habitat and edible and medicinal plant material on site the Carrollton Outdoor Learning Courtyard will be transformed into a space for exploratory learning. This will help foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the environment among students and teachers.

The courtyard Is intended to be implemented incrementally, as funding is available. The planting can be completed through a number of Prince George’s County environmental and green school initiatives. There are also other resources throughout the state of Maryland that provide funding and other resources for schools attempting to enhance outdoor environmental education.

The Carrollton Elementary School Outdoor Learning Courtyard design has taken into consideration the schools capacity for implementation, potential funding sources, as well as the thoughts and opinions of the staff and students. With hard work and dedication the newly improved Carrolton Courtyard space will be a bright and welcoming outdoor learning environment, that hopefully will serve the Carrollton Elementary School community for years to come.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY CLEAN UP, GREEN UP PROGRAM
RESOURCES
The Clean Up Green Up Program is a county funded program that provides free plant material, planting supplies, and design assistance for communities to beautify their public spaces. Each fall, Carrollton Elementary School can choose to participate in the program and install one of the proposed planting areas from the design. Link: https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/2590/Clean-Up-Green-Up
RAIN BARREL RESOURCES Check out the Neighborhood Design Center Rain Barrel Action Guides for information regarding how to install and maintain rain barrels. *Don’t forget, rain barrels must be emptied each winter and re-attached each spring! Link: http://www.ndc-md.org/get-involved/community-action-guides/ The Chesapeake Bay Trust is also a great resources for rain barrels. CBT has partnered with the Prince George’s County Rain Check Rebate Program which offers incentives to eligible applicants to improve and reduce runoff. Link: https://cbtrust.org/prince-georges-county-rain-check-rebate/
CHESAPEAKE BAY TRUST ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION GRANTS The Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT) provides thousands of dollars each year in funding for environmental education and restoration projects. There are large grants that have specific deadlines in the spring and fall, and there are also mini-grants that can be applied for on a rolling basis. Link: https://cbtrust.org/grants/
MAEOE - MARYLAND ASSOCIATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL + OUTDOOR EDUCATION GREEN SCHOOLS PROGRAM The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education - Green Schools Progarm (MDGS) - “allows schools and their communities to evaluate their efforts in environmental sustainability. Participating schools empower youth to make changes to reduce environmental impact, encourage sustainability and foster environmental literacy.” This is a program that Carrollton may qualify for to aid in design implementation.
