Party Tips Avoid potential disappointment, don’t send out the invitations until you have confirmed your child’s best friend/s availability as well as the entertainer/ entertainment. Keep the party manageable, interactive and personal - don’t invite the whole class, unless, say your child has just started a new school and it’s a way for them to meet friends. Unless you are a domestic goddess, or absolutely love cooking, keep the food simple and cold so you can put it all out at the beginning and one less thing for you to have to do during the party. Don’t worry about structured entertainment for kids under the age of 4 – whatever toys you have at home or your local park or play centre will usually suffice.

18 19 9

“According to my kids, the best thing about their parties is the cake, which I never make, and the party bags - my favourite thing to do, even though I spend most of my time and energy on the decorating, games and activities,” Michelle says. “At the end of the day, the kids aren’t going to remember a lot of the detail – the most exciting part for them is just getting to hang with all their friends so try to plan the party based around this just having fun with their friends.”

Tips on Decorating Baby’s Nursery Renovating a room to make way for a nursery is an exciting stage in your life. As a parent, you naturally want to create a happy, safe, comfortable environment in your home for your precious baby. Here are a few tips on how to decorate your baby’s nursery: Flooring Carpet is probably the most practical to have under foot. It’s definitely good for those colder months (think of pacing up and down at night trying to get bubs to sleep). Also once baby starts to move around.

Window Coverings Try and go for a good black out blind or covering. Make sure to keep cords well away from baby’s cot and safely tucked away out of reach.

Walls When choosing the colour to paint your walls, remember that colour affects moods! If you want to create a sense of calmness, it is best to go for soft blue and green colours. Yellow brings warmth and happiness to a room. Reds can be a bit overwhelming, although a soft orange colour will bring energy! White is a good colour to opt for if you want to accessorize with bright coloured pictures and wall decals.

Storage You will want all your baby things stored so it’s easy for you to put your hand on them when needed. Opt for good shelving to store all baby’s essentials in baskets or boxes!

Furniture Invest in multi-functional pieces of furniture like a cot that turns into a bed. Furniture that can easily be repainted and reused as your child grows! Why not place a comfy chair in a corner of the room. It will definitely come in handy for those late night feeds!

Recipes for all the Family With

Frantic in the Kitchen

A little about me: Hello, my name is Sofia and I’m a 39 year old mum to 2 beautiful children under 5. My passion lies in food and creating recipes that all members of the family can enjoy. This issue is all about family favourites. I hope you enjoy them.. I look forward to sharing with you my creations! I will start off with a healthier way of making CHICKEN NUGGETS. These little beauties are baked, juicy and crunchy and great for adults and children. MY BAKED CHICKEN NUGGETS Ingredients 500g chicken ( I used organic chicken breast) 1 tblsp smoked paprika 1 cup thick yoghurt 2 cups panko breadcrumbs Seasoning

Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper and spray with light olive oil. Cut the chicken into half palm size pieces. Prepare a bowl with the paprika, yoghurt and seasoning. Prepare another bowl with the panko breadcrumbs. Dip the chicken in the yoghurt, shake off excess and coat in the panko breadcrumbs. Place on the baking tray. Lightly spray with oil and bake for about 30 minutes or until golden. Serve with your favourite veggies and/or salad.

I have not met anyone who doesn’t love a cheesy macaroni and cheese. My healthier version has pureed broccoli and plenty of cheese to fool big and small kids alike. PUREED BROCCOLI MAC ‘N’ CHEESE Ingredients 400 g pasta of your choice (macaroni is good for the whole family) 250 g pureed broccoli florets (fresh or frozen is fine 300 ml thickened cream 1 cup 4 cheese shredded 1/2 cup grated parmesan SAUCE 1/4 cup plain flour 1/4 tsp curry powder (or nutmeg or paprika) 50 g butter 2 cups milk A little extra parmesan for top

Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Pre-heat oven to 190 degrees celsius. Prepare macaroni as per instructions and make sure it is just al dente. Do not overcook at this point. Set aside. Prepare broccoli by steaming, boiling or microwaveing, its your choice. Puree broccoli. Add cream and cheeses. Set aside. In a medium saucepan on low heat add butter, melt then add flour. Whisk until the mixture comes away from the sides. Add half the milk, whisk quickly to avoid lumps, add remaining milk, continuously whisking until thick. Add curry powder, nutmeg or paprika. In a big bowl mix ALL the ingredients well together. Place in a baking dish and sprinkle extra grated parmesan on top. Bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!

RIZOGALO (creamy rice pudding ) has beena family favourite ever since I was a little girl. Mum used to always make the Greek desserts but I think I may have done a good as version as Mum’s. This recipe has Natvia which is a natural sugar substitute made from the Stevia plant. You can however substitute it with caster sugar if you prefer. RIZOGALO (rice pudding) Ingredients 1 cup rice ( I used shortgrain but arborio and basmati work just as well) 1 litre milk 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract 300 ml thickened cream (full cream) 3/4 cup Natvia or Caster Sugar Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

On a low heat in a medium sized saucepan, heat the milk and then add Natvia and rice. Stir occassionally for 20 minutes. Add vanilla and cream. Stir occassionally for another 20 minutes. You will see the milk starting to become a little thicker yet slightly still runny and the rice will be cooked. Pour into desired glasses. Wrap with clingwrap pressing on top. Serve when cool. At least 4 hours. I like to serve mine with a good dusting of cinnamon.

Health and Fitness

for Kids

With Carly Grossek - Cinderella Stories Health & Fitness Helping your kids get and stay healthy isn’t always easy. It’s hard for them to resist unhealthy snacks, soft drinks and fast food that seem to be all around them. Some children just aren’t into sports, but that shouldn’t mean they have to be glued to the television and computer screens. Here are some helpful tips and information to help you get them more active. Think outside the playing field Not everyone is drawn to organized sports such as soccer or baseball. Look for other activities your child will enjoy -- like dancing, rock climbing, swimming, or martial arts. And have patience it may take some trial and error before your kid finds the right fit. Join in the game Kids love it when their parents play with them. So encourage children’s fitness by taking a family hike. Have a game of backyard football/cricket. Walk or bike to school together. Play hopscotch. Limit screen time The recommended screen time a day, whether that’s watching TV, surfing the Internet, or playing video games is one to two hours. But many children spend four or more hours each day in front of a screen. Encourage active alternatives to these passive pastimes, such as shooting hoops at the local playground, walking the dog, or a game of tag. To help keep temptation at bay, remove TVs from bedrooms and put the computer in a shared space where you can supervise. If you have teens, set guidelines about other sedentary pursuits like chatting on the phone or text messaging.

Lead by example If you vegetate in front of the TV every night, the remote control in one hand and a bag of chips in the other, you’re not practicing what you preach. Your kids aren’t likely to respect restrictions you set on their screen time either. So check your own viewing behavior and serve as a role model by incorporating physical activity into your everyday life. When you can, walk instead of driving. Climb the stairs rather than wait for the elevator. Regularly participate in active pursuits that you enjoy. Let your kids see and hear how much you enjoy these activities. Offer positive feedback Praise a child for perfecting that handstand or figuring out how to pump those legs to swing high in the sky. Out-of-shape or uncoordinated children need to hear encouragement for reaching even small goals, such as walking or biking further than last time. Remember, acknowledge the effort, choosing to be active or trying to improve a skill, rather than the outcome as it will help build your child’s confidence. Children who aren’t naturally athletic may be selfconscious about their physical skills (or lack of them). They may also fear public failure, embarrassment, or teasing. A child may just be physically cautious. These kids need all the support and cheerleading you can offer. Nagging or negative comments don’t work and will only serve to make your child feel bad. Bring a friend along Kids love to hang out with their peers, so invite a buddy along for a bike ride, offer to bring a friend ice-skating, or head to the pool with a companion. Young children enjoy going to the playground with friends to chase, climb, swing, slide, and run. If your child is more likely to check out a team sport with a friend in tow, then go ahead and sign them up. Just make sure the focus is on making fitness fun and learning new skills, not competition and winning as this can dampen your child’s enthusiasm for the game.

Crafty Kids Zone No matter their age kids love crafty activities! It lets them explore and express themselves in their own way. With drawing, we may just see a bunch of squiggles and lines but to a 4 year old it could be a super hero off to save the world from a spaghetti monster – yes, my 4 year old daughter recently handed me that picture. Finding endless ideas for craft activities can be hard. Here are just 3 very simple, and very cute craft ideas.

Marble (or ping pong) Painting

You will Need Marbles or Ping Pong Balls Paint (different colours) Tray or container Paper

How To: 1.

Place the paper in or on the tray or container (I personally use those plastic kitty litter trays that you can pick up for $2 or so from Sam’s warehouse).

2.

Pop the marbles/balls into the paint, then roll on the paper. Kids can hold the tray and roll the ball or marble back and forth creating fantastic designs.

Another alternative is using straws to blow the ping pong balls around or to push them on the paper.

Handy Tips Remember to pop old clothes or an apron on the kids cause I promise you – they WILL get messy! Written by Stacey Marnock Cheeky Little Monkey Designs

Please remember that marbles are small and can be a choking hazard and young children should not be left unsupervised.

You will Need Dotted cardstock, Toilet Paper Roll Bobunny double dot ribbon, Googly eyes 1.5 inch flower punch 1/2 inch circle punch Adhesives.

Toilet Roll Butterflies

A great way to recycle empty toilet rolls and make some very cute butterflies in the process.

How To: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Create the base of the butterfly by cutting a piece of cardstock into a 4.25 x 5.25 inch rectangle. Put adhesive along all the edges of the rectangle, plus a little in the middle of the cardstock. Now roll the cardstock onto the toilet paper roll, covering it. At this point you can also add your googly eyes. I think it’s fun for them to be different sizes. Next, cut two 3 inch strips of ribbon. I tend to make my butterfly all matching, the body, wing base and antennae all the same color. After cutting the ribbon, tie a knot at one end of the ribbon, and adhere the ribbon to the inside of the tube, like shown above.

Make the Accordian Base You can use sturdy paper, poster board or light weight cardboard for your base. I cut a cereal box into three strips for our project. Accordion fold your strips, so your finished piece will be able to stand.

Accordian Garden Stem Material Ideas -

How To make Stems:

plastic straws pipe cleaners strips of colored & patterned paper felt craft foam yarn ribbon popsicle sticks, painted green green tape draw stems with green crayons, markers, paint

1. Once you have all your stem materials gathered glue, tape, and draw stems on your board. 2. Be prepared – pipe cleaners take a lot of glue to stick! 3. Set this aside to dry while you work on your flowers.

Other Flower Material Ideas How To make Flowers: There are many different ways to make your flowers – use what you have on hand! We cut circles and tulip shapes out of watercolour paper. When your flowers are finished and dry, attach them to your stems. I use a combination of glue stick and white glue for this part. Glue dots would also work great, with no drying time. That’s it! Now you have some cheery flowers to tide you over till the real ones are blooming.
