I am enjoying the first movements of my baby alongside the heartburn (oh the heartburn!) and the joy of seeing my belly grow. Now I really can use the excuse that I have nothing to wear. This month I will be heading to the Melbourne Kids Instyle show to check out the upcoming seasonal trends and chat with the amazing people behind the brands we all love. I am sure the room will be buzzing and I will come home energised with even more ideas for how we can keep growing Kid Magazine and bringing you even more exciting news and reviews. INTRODUCINGTHE SAPLINGCHILDRANGE From the spark of an idea three years ago to designer threads fit for a Prince, Sapling Child is a growing (or more like exploding) label that is a must have for every new bub. First launching onto the market 18 months ago, husband and wife team Peta and Charles Stinson are the dynamic duo behind the burgeoning brand. It was while living in Fiji three years ago and dressing her youngest child in organic clothes that the Sapling seed was planted. “Some organic fabrics are beautiful and have such lovely prints, but chemical dyes are used and chemical processes are used in the dying and printing process. It didn’t make sense to me to buy organic, yet still have all those nasties in the fabric! That’s when I decided I wanted to do something different, and affordable”, says Peta. The Sapling range is all GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified with all garments and trimmings made from 100% organic certified cotton and printed with organic vegetable dyes that are free from toxic chemicals and heavy metals. The organic eco-choice for Sapling is not just about protecting babies sensitive skin from the risk of exposure to some of the most toxic chemicals traditionally used in textile production but also because it is better for the farmers and

kidmagazine.com.au 10

the environment. “It’s not just a better choice for babies, but it’s a better and more sustainable choice for the planet”, says Peta. Featuring equally nature inspired designs, Peta used her childhood memories as inspiration for the prints. Childhood summers spent in Canada brought about the camping bears and the bird in tree print is Peta’s take on the birds and blossoms that featured on her clothes as a young girl. As for the owls Peta explains, “I don’t know if you remember, but owls also used to be so big in the 80s, we used to have these strange big brown and green owls on our curtains!” Before the birth of the royal baby Sapling received an order from the Duchess of Cambridge. I can’t even imagine the excitement that would have ensued following that order! “We actually sent out a range of goodies, which if course was exciting, but we’ll be even more excited if we can grab an elusive shot of the bubby in Sapling! How amazing would that be?” One thing is for sure that whatever Prince George is spotted wearing will be the new Sapling best seller. Peta’s advice to other new mums planning their baby’s wardrobe? “Don’t plan too much. Grab the essentials, and all the fun stuff that’s too cute to pass up. Have fun, and buy as you go!”

kidmagazine.com.au 11

As an expectant mum I have been getting very distracted on the Sapling website trying to pick what my bubba will wear. As we are waiting for the surprise with baby’s gender I have already added the Dove Grey Kimono and Owl on Branch Long Sleeve Bodysuit to my Babylist. I have been assured by Peta that there are some new items coming to the Sapling range soon so stay tuned! In the meantime, check page 7 for your chance to win a Sapling prize pack valued at $120. Parents to three young boys (Max 9, Finn 6 and Oliver 3), Charles and Peta are based on the Gold Coast after having spent a few years overseas feeding Charles wanderlust and the family love of adventure. Running a business on top of such a busy brood must be a challenge but the pair seem to have it down pat. Peta manages the front end including design, wrapping, mail outs and communications while Charles is responsible for the back end of the business from orders, warehouse, photography and mailing. The flexibility of running your own business is a drawcard for Peta, “I can take my computer or sketch pad to the park and work while the kids are playing. I can still do pick ups and drop offs and work around them, although it also means that I end up working late and on weekends!” Find Sapling at saplingchild.com, facebook.com/ Saplingchild or instagram.com/saplingchild

than half the battle. The challenge remaining is the clumsy fingers and joy of flinging food across the table. Not to worry though, Jo also has a solution for that with her book Mealtimes Without Mayhem.

Food on the floor, liquid covering the table and not a second to enjoy your own meal is a scenario most mums would be able to relate to. Fussy eaters, restless wrigglers and kids being kids causes much mayhem at dinner tables the world over each and every day. Mother Jo Turner was only too aware of the challenges of family mealtimes and so with her son set about creating a child booster seat perfect for use in the home and portable for use when eating out. The Toosh Coosh Kids’ Support Seat was the result and mums around the country are loving this simple idea that is so effective. For most children over three years of age, they are too big for a high chair but sitting in a regular chair leaves them reaching for the table. A situation that inevitably results in mess and also frustration from both the child and the parents. While many parents resort to cushions or even phone books to solve the dilemma, they still aren’t the ideal solution for this problem. Toosh Coosh features a bum shaped seat that little bodies fit perfectly into encouraging them to sit still, and in fact from our experience making it harder for them not to!. Made from durable material, and environmentally friendly to boot, Toosh Coosh is soft enough for comfort but will stay put on the chair with a child’s body weight. Unlike other booster seats on the market Toosh Coosh comes in only two colours, black and red, meaning it will fit with most décor and not stand out as super “kiddie”. This is also great for older kids who still need a booster but don’t want any childish designs. So if the kids are comfortable, less able to wriggle and are actually able to reach the table in a seat they will enjoy sitting in that is more

kidmagazine.com.au 13

I gave the Toosh Coosh a run with my threeyear-old niece and while she was hesitant to start with, especially with me eagerly watching on and quizzing her about how she felt about the seat (calm down Aunty Sara) she really took to the seat. I noticed that even after she left the table to play with her brother that she came back to that seat to take up the prime Toosh Coosh position and join in the conversation we were still having around the table. Feedback from her mum has been that the seat has been helping with settling her at the table. If only there was a Toosh Coosh alternative for settling her in every situation! Toosh Coosh isn’t just for home but comes in a handy bag that can be taken when visiting friends or eating out. It is lightweight so easy to carry and can even be used in some movie theatres. Suitable for kids aged 3-8, it can also be used at a desk to give a boost for homework (sorry Mum and Dad you may still be required for those tricky maths questions though) or for younger children while doing craft activities. Toosh Coosh is available from tooshcoosh.com. au. Jo Turner’s book Mealtimes Without Mayhem can be purchased at mealtimeswithoutmayhem. com.

Q&A with Kristin Laidlaw

Denim Product Manager, Jeanswest We quizzed Kristen on the Jeanswest maternity range for all you yummy mummiesto-be who don’t want to give up your denim favourites as your bump grows. What are the style differences between maternity jeans and regular jeans? Jeanswest maternity jeans are in-step with fashion and are designed with absolute comfort in mind, for the changing bodies of mum’s-to-be. Designed in traditional five pocket styling, the added functionality of our Maternity jeans is what makes them so special. Featuring an adjustable elasticised waistband, our Maternity jeans allow the waistline to expand with your growing body. The low front rise means the jeans don’t cut into your growing waistline or get pushed down by your growing belly! They also feature a mock zipper and mock pockets which increase comfort, reduce bulk and ensure you don’t lose the appearance of regular jean features. The double layered elastic tummy band is designed for maximum comfort, firmness and support for your expanding belly, which is especially important as your belly grows bigger.

What should women be looking for when shopping for the perfect pair of maternity jeans? As a mum, I know that when your body starts to grow, so does the feeling of anxiety that you will have nothing to wear that is complimentary or that will look good! Jeanswest recognise that mum’s-to-be don’t want to hang up their favourite jeans for nine months but still want to look and feel fashionable! We also recognise that comfort is key with your changing body, so we’ve tried and tested all our Maternity jeans to ensure maximum comfort. The denim fabrics we use are high quality, super soft and super stretchy and they’re not too heavy or stiff, while they hold their colour and shape extremely well, wash after wash. We’ve also limited heavy wear templates so our maternity jeans are slimming and flattering.

kidmagazine.com.au 14

Are there any sizing differences between maternity and regular jeans that women should be aware of? No, the great thing about our maternity jeans is that our mum’s-to-be can continue to wear their normal jean size, as we’ve made the necessary adjustments to see them through their pregnancy without having to try on bigger sizes.

The Jeanswest range features ‘over the bump’ bands. What is the benefit of these as opposed to ‘under the bump’ styles? We decided to do the over the bump tummy bands as it gives a lovely secure feeling of support and comfort as the belly grows and grows. When you’re reaching the end of your pregnancy (between 28-40 weeks) the band will help keep your jeans in place. Once you give birth, you’ll be transitioning back to your pre-pregnancy jeans, and the band will transition with you until you can finally button up the front of your favorite pre-pregnancy jeans again!

Is there anything else you want to tell us about the Jeanswest maternity range? Our Core Maternity Jeans are always available in sizes 6-18 in Super Skinny, Skinny and Bootcut fits, in over four washes and in short, regular, long and extra-long leg lengths. We also have Slim Capri’s in Dark indigo and Black, and fashion styles like Skinny Capri’s, Skinny 7/8s and Boyfriend jeans for Spring Summer 2013. Women can continue to wear our maternity jeans after giving birth, while their tummy slowly returns back to a more normal shape. Also, our Tummy Trimmer jeans are a great option for new mummies with post pregnancy

kidmagazine.com.au 15

bodies, as they have a higher waistline with specially engineered pockets that help to flatten your tummy and give the appearance of a slimmer frame. Our Core Tummy Trimmer jeans are available in Slim Straight and Slim Bootcut fits, again in short, regular, long and extralong leg lengths. Your perfect maternity and post-pregnancy jeans are waiting for you at Jeanswest!. For more information on Jeanswest and the maternity range visit jeanswest.com.au.

END Kristin’s top three tips for retaining style while pregnant 1. Invest in a couple of pairs of comfortable jeans to rotate and wear day or night! 2. Pamper yourself and keep your skin and hair looking healthy, so you feel good and confident with your changing shape. You’ll be glowing!

The skin connection Most people love a hug and the safety and warmth it provides and this is even more so for young babies seeking security and comfort from their mother in the months after birth. Leading household name, QV Skincare is setting out to educate Australian families about the benefits of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby immediately after and in the months following childbirth. Author and parenting expert Jodie Benveniste says, “It is all about creating a connection between you and your baby and skin on skin contact helps that. It is bringing all the senses together through touch and warmth and smell and it helps your baby to feel really safe and secure and create that loving connection.” Skin-to-skin contact has been found to assist in better temperature and heart rate regulation, more settled sleep patterns, the establishment of baby’s skin with mothers friendly bacteria offering greater protection against infection and resulting in lower stress levels and calmer babies that cry less. Known as kangaroo care, skin-to-skin contact is not only helping your baby but also giving you those lovely opportunities to cuddle your precious newborn and build a loving connection. Benveniste advises that you should build skin-to-skin contact into the daily things you already do with your baby such as during bath time and feeding. It isn’t just mums who benefit from skin-to-skin contact and while I was having images of my husband bottle feeding our baby while he was topless on the couch, Benveniste assured me that just a

kidmagazine.com.au 22

few buttons undone would be enough to get the contact required for dad to build a loving connection with his precious baby. Cuddling, bathing, feeding and holding hands are all great ways to create opportunities for skin-to-skin contact, but what about in the colder months when you are doing everything you can to keep baby warm? Benveniste suggests wrapping a blanket around baby and yourself so you can keep each other warm. One of the ways to encourage skin-toskin contact is through baby massage. Recent research shows that regular baby massage can make bones grow stronger, improves the digestive system and increases blood circulation. It is also one of the most pleasing ways to calm your baby, and to help them get a good night sleep. Baby Whisperer and author, Elizbaeth Sloane states, “Infant massage offers bubs pain relief from teething, wind and tummy upsets, plus helps with the infant’s mental health, helping to produce a calmer child that has more trust in their parents,”

Full Fringe If you find yourself pressed for time and are always tying your hair back, a Full Heavy Fringe is a great way to frame your face and look polished without having to spend hours blow drying. Example, Alexa Chung. Honey Blonde If you are a blonde and are finding it hard keeping up colour appointments, ask your colourist to work some darker Honey Tones through with your highlights. Therefore, extending the life of your colour as your re-growth won’t be as obvious. Example, Rosie Huntington Whitley. Balayage Although Balayage has reached its peak it is the perfect choice for brunettes as they can achieve lightness through their hair and only need to see their colourist twice a year. Example Alexa Chung. kidmagazine.com.au 25

On trend styles Celebrity Hair Stylist, Alex PF Jackson (alexpfjacksonhairandmakeup.com), shares his top four on trend styles. Style One Create a loose pony on top of the head. Style One

Divide into two smaller ponies and make two random plaits. Wrap around and loosely pin as desired. Add hair embellishment. Style Two Make a side braid leaving out some loose edges at the hair line in the front. Join into a low pony tail.

Style Two

Wrap the extra length of the pony tail around and pin in loosely. Style Three Part hair where desired (using a side or middle parting). Leave out the front section of your hair from ear to ear. Tie your hair into a low pony tail. Then tear the crown area and join into pony tail. Pull the hair around each side from in front of the ear.

Style Three

Twist inwards and pin both sides into the middle and conceal ends. Don’t worry about it being to neat. Style Four This one is really easy and looks great. Take random sections of your hair then twist each one onto itself so it curls up.

Style Four

Then, pin in the areas where desired to keep it close to your head.

Spring clean your hair Get your hair ready for Spring with these tips from at home hair care experts JoBaz (jo-baz.com.au). Get a trim Nothing will make you feel fresher than a trim. It’s important to get your hair in great shape in spring as we get the most growth in the warmer months. A trim every 6-8 weeks is ideal to keep your hair in excellent shape and to ensure your split ends don’t move up your hair shaft. Whether it’s an inch or two, a clean trim will leave your hair looking noticeably healthier. Brighten up Amp up your new routine with a spring inspired hair colour. Going a shade or two lighter on your base colour will give your skin instant warmth, while highlights on the crown of your head make a huge difference. Alternatively a punch of bright colour (think orange-reds or vibrant pinks) is sure to stand out in the warmer days ahead. If you need to remove colour build beforehand or if you make a mistake with your colour choice, don’t worry too much as JoBaz Hair Colour Remover will be on hand to take you back to your natural shade. Give your hair brushes a bath How can you expect to keep your hair clean if you’re brushing it with a dirty brush? Loose ends, dust and dirt; it all gets onto our hair brushes and that’s why

they need a regular wash. Remove any hair that’s built up in the brush (wetting the hair brush first often makes it easier to take out). Fill a container large enough to hold the brush with half hot water and half vinegar. Let soak in a tub for 20 minutes, rinse and allow it to dry overnight. Try something new A new season means a new look and spring is a great season to sport a straight ‘do. JoBaz Everyday Straight Hair will give you straight and shiny tresses without wasting hours every day on styling tools that often result in dried and fried locks. Give your styling tools some TLC Because heat tools like curling irons or straighteners get used so much – dirt, oil, product and grime can build up on the surface, leading to less than perfect styling results. When your styling tools are unplugged and cooled down, wipe them down with a damp lukewarm cloth until clean. Treat your hair to a condition Rescue and rejuvenate winter hair that’s dry or damaged with a deep conditioner. A conditioning treatment will help restore the nutrients and vitamins your hair has lost over the winter season. Try JoBaz Everyday Straight Hair. It contains advanced Collagen and Keratin Protein complex which hydrates and strengthens damaged hair. Seep your strands in oil Give your hair an at-home oil treatment to rejuvenate your hair. Sweet almond and coconut oils are all great botanicals to use to help repair damaged hair. Apply small amounts of your preferred botanical oil onto damp hair until it’s completely worked into your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and a warm towel and let it set for 30 minutes, then rinse and shampoo. To condition brittle ends and smooth fly-aways, mix a few drops of botanical oils with a few drops of sandalwood oil and run it through the ends of your hair. Both JoBaz Everyday Straight and Hair Colour Remover products are available from selected Priceline, Woolworths, Big W and pharmacies at an RRP of $29.95.

CALLING ALL PARTY SUPPLIERS... By Tanya Castellino, Life’s Little Celebrations

Planning your child’s birthday party can be stressful and as mums we sometimes just don’t have the time or energy to do everything ourselves. However using some wonderful suppliers can make a huge difference between being a stressed out exhausted mum at your child’s birthday, and being able to enjoy the occasion! These days you can find some amazing businesses able to do just about anything for a kid’s party! Perhaps you want someone to make a fun cake or cute cookies for the party, or someone to design an invitation to match a theme? Maybe you want some bunting or tissue pom poms to decorate the party. Or you want an entertainer for the kids and a photographer to capture all the memories? The new Life’s Little Celebrations children’s party directory lists fabulous party suppliers around the country to help mum’s connect with quality businesses when planning their kid’s celebrations and to save them time in their party planning! However with all the businesses and suppliers available - how do you find and choose the best?

Money matters We can’t pretend we all have limitless budgets for our kid’s parties. However a decision based purely on price may lead to a disappointment in quality. If you only choose suppliers who provide you the cheapest quote then it may cost you more in the long run! The cost of the product/service should be only one of the factors to consider when choosing a supplier. kidmagazine.com.au 30

What money can’t buy Excellent customer service rates high in my eyes as far as choosing a party supplier and is something you can’t put a price on! You want to choose a business/supplier who return your e-mails/calls promptly, who really listens to what you want and who is friendly and approachable. In the early stages of receiving a quote and discussing what you are after you should be able to gauge the level of service this supplier will provide you with.

Images speak louder then words High quality of work is also of utmost importance! Often you can deal with party suppliers all online without ever seeing them or their work in person. However by viewing their website & their Facebook page you can gain an idea of their reputation and the standard of their products and service. View their galleries/photo albums and also look for testimonials on their Facebook page wall.

kidmagazine.com.au 31

Great party tips Cakes & Dessert makers When choosing someone to make the birthday cake or desserts make sure you see images of their past work and if possible taste some samples. Most cake & dessert suppliers have numerous images on their website or Facebook page and often they will also have testimonials from clients which is always important to look out for. You will also want to ask about pick up/ delivery options and flavour options.

Invitations & Printables If you’re looking for someone to supply you with personalised invitations or printables it’s important to not only find someone with a design you like but there are also other considerations. Different suppliers will supply different items (e.g. invite, thank you tag, cupcake toppers etc.) in packages so you will want to make sure they supply the items you are after. You’ll also want to find out how much customisation can be made and make sure you clarify if you are ordering printables for you to print yourself OR if there will be actual printed items posted to you. Some suppliers will have images on their website or Facebook page of clients parties who have used their stationery so you can view how the finished product may look.

kidmagazine.com.au 32

Party boutiques

them exactly what they will provide, setup and pack up times

Although there are some big name party shops they may not always provide the best service or the most unique products. Small businesses are fantastic to deal with because often if you need something last minute or something ordered in for you they will be happy to do it. Look out for quality online party stores and join their Facebook page so you can be notified of their sales.

Aim for suppliers who have a high standard of service & quality, who are passionate about what they do & who are genuinely interested in your child’s celebration! It will help ease the stress off you and ensure you can enjoy your child’s party with hopefully a little more sleep the night before!

Entertainment Children’s party entertainment isn’t cheap so you want to make sure you receive entertainment that will genuinely keep the kids engaged! When choosing entertainment it’s important to find out what is included in the time you have booked an entertainer for, how many kids they cater for and also see images from their clients’ parties to gain an idea of their show. Testimonials are also very important so look for these on their Facebook page or website.

Event stylists There are some talented businesses that will take a load of stress off you by planning your child’s party or perhaps style a dessert table for the party. This industry is booming and it is important when making a decision to choose someone whose style and work you love and who shares the same taste as you! You should also look carefully at photos of their work to really see the quality of the food and decorations they supply and the quality of their styling. It’s also important to discuss with

To get started in sourcing some quality suppliers visit the Life’s Little Celebrations children’s party directory . Find it at www.lifeslittlecelebrations.org and connect with a range of businesses from party hire businesses, cake makers, photographers, party boutiques and more!

Template Line one of the mask shapes up to your plate, and trace the eyelids into the centre of the plate. You will be using both, so they will need to fit together once decorated. Step 2. Lion’s mane Cut your light yellow & orange felt into strips approx 2cm wide. Do the same with your gold honeycomb. Loop the felt over, and staple around the back of the mask shape in alternating colours. Once finished, take any single layer felt offcuts and your honeycomb and slot in front of the loops to create a bit of texture. Step 3. Lions face Once happy with the arrangement of the mane, glue deep yellow felt over the front of the mask, hiding any staples and trim to size. Take your mask shape, and glue onto the plate, so that the eyes match up. Step 4. Details Cut out a triangular nose, eyelids, and two circles to decorate the face. Add folded pipe cleaners for whiskers. Once you have the shape outline for the bottom of the plate, trim it along the circular felt to match.

Template Hold the plate up to your face and work out where the eyes need to be. Draw a dot with a graphite pencil, and then using a circular template (such as the lid of a bottle) draw circles around these. Carefully cut your eyes out. Step 2. Eyes Double over your white foam and cut out a large teardrop – use the same template to cut out the eyes. Place these over the eye holes, and use as a guide to cut off the bottom of the plate, following the outline of the foam. Cut out a circular part at the top too. Step 3. Decorate Before you glue the foam down, cut out around 25 small scalloped crepe pieces (make sure they’re double layered by folding it over) and then paint a very thin layer of PVA and place these around the inner circle of the plate to create a feathered edge. Leave the remaining rim of the plate exposed. Next slot in your sequins behind the feathered edge. Now glue on your foam teardrops, add extra scalloped feathers if there are any exposed areas. Scrunch up your crepe squares, and glue these between the foam tear drops. Finally cut out two round circles for the eyes, once again using your circular template, and finally a beak. Once dry, staple a piece of elastic to either side, and it’s ready to wear. kidmagazine.com.au 37

Leading the craft revolution Hands up if you have a craft box overflowing with pipe cleaners, paper, googly eyes and an array of bits and bobs that just never seem to get used? Two Melbourne mums, Erin Hayley and Belinda Paul, saw how much their friends were spending on entertaining their kids and decided to do something about it. These second time mummas with new bubs set about to develop Kiddie Create, a craft subscription service delivered straight to your door every week “Like all mums, I want to keep my kids creative, imaginative and stimulated at home, and I want those activities to be easy and accessible,” Paul says. “With our subscription service, the craft supplies go directly to homes so all parents have to do is hand the pack over and let their children work their magic.” After an anonymous trial with 10 friends they were off into the world of business. And with four kids under three between them at the time nonetheless! A first of its kind in Australia, over the last 18 months Kiddie Create has been going from strength to strength and building a growing craft business. Within the first three months of launching they were working with Gap Kids on POP UP craft Clubs in Gap Kids stores in Sydney and Melbourne. Earlier this year they also partnered with the fabulous Little Melbourne (littlemelbourne.com.au) on another POP UP Club. “You just never know where the next POP UP Club will be, and that’s the beauty of it – we will be coming to a location near you,” Paul says. “And parents, you might even score a nice little reward for yourselves on the day, just for bringing your craft-loving kidmagazine.com.au 38

child along!” A lover of Australian firsts, Kiddie Create was also the first Australian business to partner with Artkive, the clutter-free way to save and enjoy your child’s artwork. Recently Kiddie Create has added a social responsibility element to their business in the form of a partnership with The Phoebe Foundation. Customers can order a Kiddie Create gift bundle for $9 that will be donated to The Phoebe Foundation for distribution to a sick child. $2 from the purchase of the pack is donated to The Phoebe Foundation towards funding their programs, training and research. Kiddie Create also have a creative solution for fundraising for those groups that are sick of trying to flog boxes of chocolates or standing over a hot BBQ for their school or group. With Kiddie Create, individual craft bundles are purchased by the fundraisers for $5 and then resold for $7 and there is no sugar involved! The beauty of the Kiddie Create packs is that once you have subscribed all you have to do is wait by the mailbox each week for your pack to arrive. The packs come compete with everything the kids will need to make a craft project including instructions. For the more creative kids or those who don’t like to be bound by the rules and instructions of life, they can create their own project and let their imagination take control. Parents are no longer having to purchase all those bits and bobs that can be expensive and also take time. For the less creative parents they can just enjoy the time spent with the kids without having to think up their own new and different craft projects. One thing for sure about Belinda and Erin, the brains behind Kiddie Create, is that they are bursting with energy and in everything they do you can see the passion and love they have for bringing craft into homes in a simple and stress-free way. Subscriptions cost $29 per month (you will receive a craft bundle each week) or for kids parties you can even purchase packs for $7 each to keep your little guests entertained. A recent wedding saw the girls create a craft bundle for the little guests at the wedding to craft their own bride and groom. Genius! kidmagazine.com.au 39

Kiddie Create tips for encouraging creative play

Kiddie Create tips for the not so craft savvy ‘grown ups’ Allow for mess Let your child discover on their own! Don’t fret about doing it “right” as it doesn’t matter... Be flexible Be present - help them, encourage and guide them if they are frustrated Do a little bit of craft everyday or every second day. Get them used to “craft time.” It may be when the new baby is asleep, it maybe first thing in the morning while they are raring and ready to go, it maybe while you are preparing dinner - but allocate a time that is fun, creative time Make it enjoyable - simple Use different tactile items. Soft, hard, magnetic, feathery, sticky etc. Change the “craft” up regularly Collect items from things around the house. An empty bottle or jar, a lid, leaves from outside, an old box or packaging - whatever you find

Above all have fun! Praise your child whilst doing the craft activities Look at your child’s interests. A character in a book, dolls, superheroes and recreate this into craft projects. For example, make a superhero costume for a teddy bear or make some doll furniture out of things around the house Having a project something that the kids are interested in will hold their attention longer Be prepared. Have a range of craft essentials ready like scissors, paper, glue, pom poms, ribbons, sticks, play dough etc. Craft can be anything! It can also be outside. Build a fortress outside using old bricks or sticks and leaves Think colours - kids love colour Let your little ones explore. The first time they may only sit for 4 mins, the next time it may extend to 10. But over time and as they age they will engage longer Put their artwork on show. Be proud. Kids love to see their own masterpieces on the fridge or wall (Most Kiddie Create packs come with magnets)

Add in the spinach and half of the pounded garam masala or to taste. Cook until the sauce has a creamy consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. In the meantime, place a tablespoon of filling, about an inch from one of the thin edges of each slice of eggplant, and carefully roll each up into a well stuffed log. Once the sauce is creamy, carefully place the stuffed eggplants back into the saucepan, turn the heat down, spoon over the sauce so they are covered and allow to warm through for about 3 minutes before serving with some rice, crusty buttered bread or a salad.

Road testing – Aeroplane’s Sweet Treats Trusted in jelly for more than 85 years, Aeroplane has spread its wings with the new Sweet Treats desserts range, including jelly slices and mousses. With family favourites including Strawberry Jelly Slice and Chocolate Mousse, Aeroplane’s Sweet Treats are kid-friendly dessert mixes the whole family will love. We received the complete range of Sweet Treats to test run and give our verdict. Both the Jelly Slices and the Mousses were so simple to make. The Jelly Slices take slightly longer to prepare as each layer needs to be set in the fridge but the Mousses were ready to eat within five minutes, although I set them in the fridge for a firmer mousse. Who doesn’t have great memories of eating Aeroplane Jelly as a kid? The Strawberry Jelly Slice and Lime Jelly Slice take you straight back to those memories but with a modern twist – a biscuit base and a creamy middle layer with the jelly set on top. A word of warning – these treats are very sweet so you could even cut the finished product into less than the recommended 12 pieces as a small piece is certainly sweet enough. If you are serving the slice at a birthday party, the layers can easily be cut if a child doesn’t like a particular layer so everybody wins! The mousse was really surprisingly amazing. Firstly, I was impressed with how quickly it was ready. I was skeptical how the packet mousse and 500ml of full cream milk could produce a creamy mousse but I was pleasantly surprised. Only a few minutes with the electric beater and it was ready. I served the mousse in glasses for a simple yet effective presentation. The packs do have a few ideas for how to add a twist (such as a honeycomb chocolate bar

kidmagazine.com.au 50

crushed on top of the Choc Honeycomb Mousse or fresh berries served with the Chocolate Mousse – YUM!) but the mousse is so versatile that you really could do anything with it. Perhaps serving the mousse as a dessert canapé at a party in smaller glasses and with a garnish of chocolate or berries. As it is prepared in only 5 minutes but tastes so good it is the perfect easy dinner party option. Aeroplane’s Sweet Treats are available in the dessert aisle of your local Woolworths supermarket now. The Jelly Slices retail for $4.99, and the Mousses for $3.74.

Sweet as... 80% less sugar Have you ever thought about the amount of sugar your kids are consuming just in what they are drinking? One New Zealand mum did and has created a product that kids love with 80 per cent less sugar than many popular juices. Sian Leonard is a mother of three children, aged 15, 9 and 5, who was struggling to get the kids to drink water. With one of her children suffering a sugar sensitivity due to mild autism and ADHD she was fed up with the sugary meltdowns that sugar-laden fruit drinks or orange juice inevitably led to. “As a Mum of three, I’d had my fair share of watching my kids go from happy and content to climbing the walls and becoming irrational after too much sugar and I wasn’t alone; millions of parents around the world can relate to this.” “Much of our son’s behavior and ability to concentrate is almost entirely managed by limiting his sugar consumption”, said Leonard. After exhaustive research and scouring of the supermarket shelves in New Zealand, Leonard discovered that not only was there not a product that would meet her needs but also that she wasn’t alone when it came to fussy drinkers. The Australian research tells a similar story with 64 per cent of Aussie kids not drinking the recommended 1.5 litres of fluid per day. Drawing on her fourteen years experience in sales, marketing, product development, brand strategy

kidmagazine.com.au 56

and category development Leonard set out on a mission to develop the closest thing possible to water but with a little added flavour to satisfy the sweet tooth. “Many popular juices contain as much sugar as Coke, but are deceptively marketed as healthy due to their fruit base. “Some beverage companies are using licensed popular characters that children and parents trust to encourage them to buy their products knowing they contain almost as much sugar as a can of Coke and that children will ‘pester’ their parents for them”, explains Leonard. To combat this Leonard and her kids created their own bottle design and characters: Bubble Merfriend, Carter the Deep Water Robot, Baloopa the Starfish, Milla in her Magical Crabsuit and Jam the Jellyfish. “The kids chose the logos, helped select the character underwater theme and evolved the story creation of two kids who thanks to Carter’s clever invention are able to wear magical suits which allow them to venture to the magical world of the Blue Spring. The two ‘kids’ characters are inspired by their personalities and named after them ‘Carter and Milla’, they tasted every flavour sample,

chose the blue sleeve colour and gave us the big thumbs up on our unique bottle shape.” The super cute characters feature on the bottles so they are a great alternative for parents to offer the kids when they might be begging for another more sugary drink with the latest popular character splashed on the packaging. The big test is do the kids like the low sugar alternative drink? Our expert panel gave them a good trial and the reaction was “Oh yum!”. The kids loved the drinks and even the adults thought they were pretty tasty. Just enough sugar to add some flavour for the kids but the drinks are refreshing and don’t leave any sugary feel or taste in your mouth. A great combination we say.

Water Buddies launched to the New Zealand market in October 2012 and they are now available in Australia through Woolworths and independent supermarkets and New Zealand Natural Ice Cream outlets with more distributors soon to be announced. Containing New Zealand spring water with natural flavours and just 1.8 per cent sugar (1/2 teaspoon of sugar per 100ml as compared to up to 3 teaspoons of sugar found in Coca Cola and other popular juice brands), Water Buddies fill a large gap within the health segment of the children’s beverage market. Leonard is proud of her achievement with more than one million Water Buddies having been produced to date. “The biggest buzz is receiving thanks from parents for being the catalyst for changing their children’s drinking habits. Many families are using Water Buddies to transition kids off juice and fizzy drinks and then onto water with huge success. It’s a good feeling knowing we’re making a difference.” For information about the range, please visit: www. drinkwaterbuddies.com. Lets face there is only one reason kids love parties (aside from the presents). It’s because they know they will get to gorge themselves on lollies, cake, fairy, bread and all the food that they don’t usually get to eat. But if your a mum looking for a healthier alternative to sausage rolls and party pies then give this sandwich sushi as go. They are so simple and everyone will love them. I’ve made these for a bunch of parties and they are always a hit. You can fill your sandwich sushi with whatever you want. Keep it simple for kids, ham and cheese, mashed egg and mayo or PBJ. For adults, ramp it up to gourmet with some smoked salmon and watercress or roast beef, mustard and rocket. The great thing about sandwich sushi is that it’s familiar. A twist on an old favourite. You will have to do very little convincing to get your kids to try it. A whole loaf of bread will cater for lots of people, however use a few slices to create something different for lunch for toddlers and kids. I used cream cheese as the ‘glue’ to keep my rolls together but you can use mayo, pickles, mustard etc.

Time to upgrade your kitchen? It’s easy as... The kitchen is the heart of the home and when it is looking tired with out of date fittings, fixtures and colours it doesn’t feel as inviting. Given the number of meals you prepare each week as a mum the time spent in the kitchen really adds up. You want a warm and welcoming kitchen that you will enjoy spending all that time in. But if you do have a kitchen in need of a makeover the costs can very quickly add up.

kidmagazine.com.au 64

But according to kitchen makeover specialists Granite Transformations, updating your kitchen to keep up with the latest trends doesn’t have to be a timely and expensive exercise. Jessie Harvey, Granite Transformations Resident Trends Expert says, “For a portion of the cost of a complete demolition and rebuild, a makeover or renovation will transform your tired old kitchen into a stunning feature.” And it seems that the days of a complete kitchen demolition and rebuild are a thing of the past with more than 10,000 people opting for kitchen makeovers in 2012 in Australia alone. “By working with existing surfaces and cabinets, a makeover will give your kitchen a new feel and fresh look. The size and shape of your current benchtops can be altered utilising our exclusive Trend Surfaces, while cupboards can easily be updated with new doors and handles. Then, finish the look with a stylish splashback, giving your kitchen a new designer feel,” says Harvey. In terms of stylish splashbacks, Granite Transformations reveal that bolder splashbacks along with colourful kitchens are one of the most popular trends in kitchens this year. “Granite Transformations splashbacks are the ideal solution as they provide protection from moisture and grease and are an easy way to make your kitchen really stand out with a decorative statement,” Harvey says. Granite Transformations has just released a new

Mosaic range called Trend Mosaic Slabs. These slabs are mounted on a thin and flexible backing board and the quickest and smartest system for laying glass mosaic tiles on large surface areas like kitchen walls, alcoves and splashbacks. The Mosaic Slabs can be laid directly over any existing surface without the need for ripping out old material reducing installation times and eliminating waste. Harvey says a great kitchen makeover doesn’t need to be complicated and can be achieved by following a few simple tips. “My advice is not to complicate the layout too much; this way you can have a simple kitchen makeover without the expense of doing a complete demolition. Choose a company that has products that are backed by a warranty and installed by a qualified tradesman.” Granite Transformations is the only national network of kitchen makeover specialists in Australia with over 40 branches across the country. They are the exclusive supplier of Trend Surfaces®, an engineered stone range combining the finest quality quartz, granite and recycled glass with a state-of-the-art polymer base, producing diamond-polished surfaces that are non-porous, heat, scratch, stain and impact resistant. By virtue of their unique production process, Granite Transformations’ slabs are just 6.5mm thick, which means they can be installed directly over existing benchtops and splashback surfaces, saving time and money. Granite’s tips for a better kitchen makeover Work out your budget first. This will be the deciding factor on what you’re able to do Determine how you use your kitchen, and how you WANT to use your kitchen. Work out what you need (more cupboard space, bigger island benchtop), before deciding on the layout Stick with a makeover/renovation as opposed to a complete demolition. It’s better for the environment and makes life easier, with a makeover being completed in just a couple of days Keep the colour palette light and fresh and just add a splash of colour with a feature splashback. Great new colours include ‘Pietra Serena’ or ‘Terra Chiara’ Engineered stone splashbacks are also an emerging trend for the simple advantage that there is no grout to clean. Plus they create a seamless look that flows beautifully with the stone benchtop Choose quality products and workmanship that is backed by a warranty. The strongest benchtop product on the market today is Granite Transformations Trend Surfaces. The Surfaces are heat, scratch, stain and impact resistant and come with a 10 year warranty
