EDITOR’S LETTER

hi!

I

’m so excited to be able to share with you all that I’m pregnant!! Pete and I are so thrilled to be expecting and are busily preparing for our mid-December arrival. I’m loving pregnancy despite all the weird symptoms no-one ever tells you about it. I mean why is it that all you hear about is pregnant women glowing until you fall pregnant yourself and then all the stories of things to “look forward to” come flowing your way?? Jokes aside, I am thrilled to be growing a little person inside me, I just can’t wait to meet him or her. In this issue I have shared a few of our experiences with impending parenthood with you and will continue to do so. From my public meltdown over the lack of maternity clothing in my local Myer (page 12) to our comical experience of trying to open a pram (page 15) I think we are in for a pretty interesting ride. As my Dad told me after I shared our pram experience with him, “just like learning to operate a pram, you will learn how to be parents as you go along on the journey.” I have really enjoyed pulling this month issue together for you focusing on all things babies (plus everything else you love). My top 5 this month are: 1. Babymoons are growing in popularity and is there any wonder why? Check out the HotelsCombined best babymoon packages on page 40. 2. It is so fun shopping for baby and we have pulled together some unique and fun gift ideas – add them to your Babylist (www.babyli. st/) or use them as inspiration when shopping for a friend. Check out our baby gift directory - www.kidmagazine.com.au/directories.html for more baby gift inspiration. 3. I am totally in love with bellababy (bellabox.com.au/baby) a fabulous beauty subscription service for mums. For $24.95 a month you will receive a box each month packed with goodies for you and baby. For your chance to win a bellababy box valued at $130, see page 7. 4. Kids’ nutritionist, Cherie Lyden, has some fantastic tips on postpartum nutrition on page 54. It is so easy to forget yourself but a healthy mum is a healthy baby. 5. Max Brenner Milk Hot Chocolat recipe. Need I say more? See page 57 for this ultra luxurious winter treat. Until next month, you can find us at www.kidmagazine.com.au for more fabulous fashion and kids news.

TINIBYNAME NOTBYNATURE Melbourne mummas Rebecca Brodie and Kerri Turner sure know a thing or two about shopping for kids. With five little ones between them, and two sets of twins nonetheless, the two best friends and former directors in the corporate advisory world have taken their shared experience as mums along with their passion for supporting local retailers to develop tinitrader.com.au. The new retail concept at tinitrader. com.au provides bricks and mortar retailers the opportunity to build a presence online to sell their product and for mums and dads to purchase from their trusted local stores at their own convenience. Over 10,000 products, from cots to prams, toys or clothes, are available from more than 100 retailers. If you are looking for a baby and kids item you are sure to find it here. Turner and Brodie were able to bring their vision for tinitrader.com.au to life with the help of Jason Wyatt and Sam Salter, co-owners of 2012 Telstra Australian Business of the Year, bikeexchange.com.au. They formed a

kidmagazine.com.au 10

partnership and have created an easy to navigate, one-stop solution for busy mums and dads. The added benefit of tinitrader.com.au is the buying tips available to help make your purchasing decisions that much easier, particularly helpful for first time mums who are lost in the myriad of products and choices available. For new parents, Brodie and Turner advise using the experience of retailers to seek advice on products that will suit their needs and for things such as help with fitting car seats and assembling the dreaded flat pack furniture. They have also developed a list of all the products you need as a new parent https://www.tinitrader. com.au/article/newborn-checklist from the nursery to feeding and clothing the list is comprehensive. And as seasoned mums of multiples what is their advice for parents expecting more than one precious bundle? “The best advice for becoming a parent of twins is to be organised. Have the nursery ready and the shopping complete as there is always a chance twins can arrive a little early!

Melbourne mummas Rebecca Brodie and Kerri Turner

We asked the ladies for their top five products available at tinitrader.com.au and while they struggled to name only a few, they came up with the below. All can be searched via the super easy search function on the tinitrader.com.au homepage. 1. For an investment toy it is hard to go past Playmobil 2. For bigger kids we love the Pathfinders models (Pathfinders Medieval Trebuchet Siege Engine Series) 3. For newborns the Bednest Bassinet 4. We love the Kalon Caravan Cot in Blue 5. We love many of the prams including Stokke Xplory, the Icandy Peach and the Joolz

Brodie is mum to four-year-old twins Charlotte & Stella and two year old Audrey. Turner’s twins, Charlie and Annabelle, aged six, also keep her on her toes. Both mums agree that balancing their various roles in their lives isn’t easy. “We have to remember that we can’t always be on top of every aspect of our lives. Sometimes the ironing pile builds up!” But they acknowledge the role of their family and friends in their success, “We have extremely supportive husbands and wonderful children. We have so many good friends that are ready to help and guide us both professionally and personally.”

Know your style. Maternity Wardrobe. As I reached week 13 of my pregnancy I was finding my wardrobe choices to be limited so I decided it was time to venture into the world of maternity clothing. Off Pete, my hubby, and I went to our local shopping centre one Saturday afternoon with all the optimism in the world that I would come home with a new wardrobe that would show off my ever expanding bump beautifully and that would make me feel like the most glamorous mum-to-be. I walked into Myer and after a stroll around the ladies fashion floor I couldn’t find what I was looking for so asked a sales assistant only to be told that they didn’t stock maternity wear in that store. Enter a rush of pregnancy hormones and by the time I found Pete who, blissfully unaware of my shocking discovery was happily wandering the menswear section, a flood of tears came over me as I cried, “Theeeeeyyy dooonnn’ttt seeellll matterrrrniityyyy clloooothes.” I was a blubbering mess and knew I sounded and looked ridiculous but I couldn’t help it. To cheer myself up I decided to look at baby clothes instead to which my darling Pete, always one with a witty comment, said “Those clothes aren’t going to fit you either”. He felt the daggers from my piercing crazed pregnant eyes and allowed me to ooh and ahh over baby goods for the rest of the afternoon.

mums-to-be experience. I consider myself fortunate to work with so many great maternity stores and labels that I was able to recover quickly from my moment in Myer to start building a wardrobe that I feel comfortable and stylish in. Not every newly pregnant woman is in the same position as I am so I wanted to share my tips with you all on how to grow a wardrobe that will grow with you.

as it has that extra bit of give in it that more structured fabrics don’t. I have been able to get a lot of wear out of some of the jersey dresses in my wardrobe and styles with rouching around the waistline are particularly flattering. You will get limited wear out of styles with a zipper in them as they will have a little less give but will be great to get you through the early weeks.

Explore your current wardrobe

I’m sure I am not alone in my desperation when it came to adjusting to my new and ever changing body shape that all

Look for pieces with soft elastic waistbands and looser fitting tops and dresses. Jersey fabric is fantastic

Hang your “maternity” pieces at one end of the wardrobe and move all the non-suitable pieces to the other end and you will be able to easily identify what you can wear. Don’t rush into throwing out items that don’t fit you any longer in a moment of “nothing

you normally would but rest assured you will get there! You may find however that pregnancy changes some of your style and that is ok. I normally have a preference for dresses and skirts but heading into my second trimester I found a couple of pairs of maternity pants that I love to wear and they are getting a real workout. Many of your choices will be driven by comfort and your changing shape will impact a lot of this. My advice is that if you don’t look and feel good in something, particularly during pregnancy then you are going to regret buying it..

Get online From my experience just heading to your local shopping centre and expecting maternity clothing to be available will not end in a happy shopping trip. While you are bound to find some clothing you will not be spoilt for choice. If you prefer to shop in a bricks and mortar store, jump online first and google maternity boutiques in your local area. Once you have tracked them down you can hit the road and see what they have to offer.

fits me anymore” rage as you won’t be pregnant for ever! As you grow out of a particular item add it to the nonsuitable end of your wardrobe and it will make getting dressed each day and choosing what to wear a much simpler process.

Know your style Pregnancy shouldn’t mean you have to change your style completely as there are enough options available to cater to any taste. Gone are the days when maternity = daggy. Knowing your style will help you glow throughout your journey. You will need to shop around a bit more than

kidmagazine.com.au 13

If you are an online shopper you really have limitless opportunities. Make sure that whoever you are buying from accepts returns so if you aren’t happy with the item when it arrives you can send it back. Experienced online shoppers know what to look for when it comes to buying clothes online but knowing your style and what you like to wear will help immensely.

Accessorise As at anytime, whether you are pregnant or not, accessories make the outfit. At any stage of your pregnancy a statement necklace will lift your outfit and make you feel greet. The benefit of accessories, aside from belts, is that they don’t discriminate and you can use your accessory collection without worrying if it will fit! If you are starting to show but haven’t told people yet a bold necklace is also a great way to draw attention away from your bump.

Think beyond maternity Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you have to wear only maternity clothes. Like with the early stages and taking advantage of what you already have, you can find a great selection of clothing at regular retail outlets that will suit throughout pregnancy. Draped cardigans are fantastic in winter to keep you and your bump warm. Depending on how big your bump is you can find stretched pants, skirts, dresses and shirts that will also do the trick. Think creatively about what you can wear. While Sussan (sussan.com.au) sell a small maternity range online they also have a card in store that highlights items from the range that can be worn comfortably as maternity items. Ask the sales assistant where you regularly like to shop if they can help.

What’s underneath also counts Don’t forget the importance of underwear in creating style. In our May issue (issuu.com/kidmagazine/docs/ kid_magazine_issue_five) Tracy Montford, founder of CAKE Lingerie, shared her tips on finding the perfect fitting maternity bra during pregnancy (page 24). This is not only important for looking stylish but also for looking after your breasts. If you were a fan of SPANX pre-pregnancy then you will know the difference they can make to the look of an outfit. Thankfully they have a maternity product, Mama SPANX featuring extra tummy support and a soft

waistband that grows with you during your pregnancy. With all the benefits of regular SPANX but with the extra flexibility for your bump these are the perfect option for avoiding visible panty lines and uncomfortable underwear. Mama SPANX retail for $59.95 and are available online at myer.com.au.

Sara’s Top 3 Online Maternity Stores 1. ASOS (asos.com/au) A really affordable range of modern maternity clothes. While I can’t speak for the comfort of the seat, it is constructed with beautifully soft fabric that won’t irritate bubs skin. In terms of safety features, the brakes are easy to engage with simple foot operation. The wheels and hood also include a reflective design feature to improve safety while walking with the pram at night.

My husband, Pete, and I found ourselves part of our own comedy show when we received a brand new Techno XT pram from Maclaren to review recently. As first time parents to-be our experience with prams extends to leaning over them to wave at friends babies when we run into them while at the shops. We are complete novices and it showed. Pete is a non-instruction reading kinda guy and so jumped straight into unfolding the pram. Luckily the Techno XT is made of sturdy stuff as no matter how hard he pushed and pulled levers and buttons it didn’t break. Phew! Other than impressing me on how resilient the pram was at withstanding our clueless attempts at unfolding and attaching accessories, I really was impressed with the features of the pram. The hood extends to provide excellent coverage from the sun, the underneath shopping basket is a great size and the pram itself is relatively compact and lightweight. The one feature that got the biggest test was the wheels as my darling husband raced the pram around our living room like it was a Formula 1 track. At that moment I saw a flashforward to my future and Pete morphing into Phil Dunphy from Modern Family… But at least I knew the wheels worked and when I was given the chance to test them out (in a more leisurely fashion and asking if I looked like a Yummy Mummy) I loved how smooth they are and how they make the pram glide. The handles are repositionable for taller parents although the lowest setting is perfect for hubby and I who weren’t blessed with height!

kidmagazine.com.au 15

For the last couple of years Pete and I have enjoyed chuckling to ourselves as we have walked away from a gathering with friends able to carry everything we needed in our pockets or my handbag as we watched our friends packing nappy bags and prams and chasing children. Now it is our turn to enjoy the fun and I intend to do it in style! The techno XT is RRP $499.95 avaiable from maclarenbaby.com.au

ISYOURBODYCRAVINGMORESLEEP Sleep expert’s seven tips to a good night’s sleep

Just had lunch but still hungry? Experience mid-morning headaches? Or lost your sex drive? All of these could be a sign that you’re not getting the sleep your body is craving, according to sleep expert and group CEO of Bedsonline.com.au, Cliff Sneider. Reaching for that alarm clock off switch isn’t always a result of Monday blues or the dread of a winter walk to the bus stop. In fact there are many factors, such as the position of your body in bed, your pre-bed ritual and even diet, that effect how you feel when we wake up in the morning. Cliff said,“It can be difficult to identify why you’re so emotional, unfocused, or just can’t shake that cold. Sometimes you may find yourself eating all day or even disinterested in your partner - these can all be symptoms of sleep deprivation or an interrupted sleep. Anyone experiencing these symptoms may find almost instant relief from altering small aspects of their regular routine. If not, then a trip to the doctor may be required to determine the issue.”

kidmagazine.com.au 20

Bedsonline.com.au is Australia’s leading online bedding speciality retailer. As a longstanding expert in bedding, Cliff has come across nearly every sleep issue that’s out there and, by providing some simple tips learned through experience, has managed to improve sleep quality for most sufferers. “The amount of sleep each individual requires can vary and by trying to increase the time you’re asleep gradually each night, you will eventually find what is right for you. Keep in mind that if you’ve been deprived of sleep for an extended period of time, it will take longer to get back into a healthy pattern,” said Cliff.

Cliff’s top 7 tips for a good night’s sleep: 1. Create a regular bedtime routine – Your body needs cues to know that it needs to slow down. Ensure that you’re home at the same time every evening to prepare your body for sleep. 2. Create a sleep-conducive environment – The ideal sleep space should be dark and quiet - outdoor noises or the whirring of a fan indoors can startle your body. The bedroom should also be comfortable and cool, with a temperature of 18 -20°C. 3. Get up at the same time every morning – Again, it’s all about routine. The body needs its cues, even when you’re asleep! Assess how many hours your body needs to function efficiently and set your alarm to ensure that you’ve reached this number – even at the weekends! 4. Finish exercise at least 2-3 hours before bed – Regular exercise is excellent for sleep, but allow your body’s adrenalin to slow down for a couple of hours. If not, you could risk a restless first couple of hours of sleep. 5. Find the right position - Sleeping on your side with your knees bent or with a pillow between your knees is the best way to maintain proper body posture. If you must sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to support the normal curve of your lower back. Sleeping on your stomach or with your head elevated on an oversized pillow arches the natural curves of the back, and increases pressure on the diaphragm and lungs. These positions can lead to restless tossing and turning, leaving you tired the next day. 6. Try to unwind - You may try stretching, relaxation exercises, a hot shower or bath, meditation, or a glass of hot milk or herbal tea to calm the body. If you’re faced with a task that may cause you frustration or a conversation that may anger you, avoid until morning. 7. Avoid electronics an hour before bed – Playing with phones, tablets and even watching television increases brain activity that becomes difficult to switch off. Try reading or another relaxing activity instead. For further tips and sleep advice visit bedsonline.com.au For further tips and sleep advice visit bedsonline.com.au

PROBIOTICS FOR bREASTFEEDING by Pinky McKay Mastitis, which is sometimes called milk fever, occurs when milk ducts become blocked which, in turn causes new milk to be forced into nearby breast tissue causing the tissue to become inflamed. Up to 15 percent of women who get mastitis whether infection may or may not be present take antibiotics, which can pass through the mothers breast milk to the baby, not to mention the risk of potential side effects such as candida, or painful nipple thrush. Specially formulated products like Qiara, contain at least 1 billion colony forming units of Lactobaciullus Fermentum, which is a patented probiotic strain which has been isolated from healthy breast milk. The probiotic also reduces the viability of bad bacteria which assists the mothers breast health and reduces tenderness during lactation while providing immune support for both mother and baby. When taken daily, it has shown to be as effective as antibiotics to treat mastitis. Internationally certified lactation consultant and best selling author Pink McKay sees the use of probiotics as not just a medicine, but, disease prevention crossing generations. “Probiotic use over antibiotics is such a fantastic breakthrough! It is distressing enough to be hit with a bout of mastitis, then to experience the side effects of antibiotics - from an unsettled baby (as the antibiotics pass through mothers’ milk) to the potential after effects, which is often the final straw for a breastfeeding mother who is feeling vulnerable and unwell from mastitis. The use of Probiotics could be the breakthrough that sees many more women continue to

“It is actually your nutrient intake that needs to double during pregnancy, not your calorie intake. “says Lisa, “So it is important for pregnant mums to eat nutrient-rich foods, along with the appropriate nutritional supplementation.” During pregnancy a women’s blood volume increases dramatically, so it is important you are including iron-rich foods in your diet such as lean red meat, fish, legumes and green leafy vegetables to assist with red blood cell production.

“During and post pregnancy, significant nutrient donations are made to your growing baby. This can often result in mothers being deficient in nutrients, leaving them feeling exhausted and run-down,” said Lisa, “But it can also leave mothers more susceptible to illness and postnatal complications such as breastfeeding problems, postnatal depression and poor recovery after birth”.

1. Iron: Iron is a mineral essential used by the body to transport oxygen, maintain healthy blood levels and release energy. During pregnancy, your daily iron requirements almost double to 27mg/day1. Low iron levels can result in tiredness and a lack of energy. 2. Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps increase the absorption of iron. It is also involved in the making of new connective tissue, maintaining good metabolism, and is a powerful antioxidant. 3. Iodine: Iodine is an extremely important nutrient during pregnancy and early childhood. It helps ensure normal physical and mental development of your growing child. During pregnancy, your dietary iodine requirements increase by 47 percent2.

The Australian Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for all vitamins and minerals increases further during breastfeeding, as breastfeeding places the highest nutritional demands on a mother. If her dietary intake is deficient, this may impact directly on her growing baby. “Breastfeeding mums should be drinking plenty of water daily (2+ Litres), and eating quality protein, complex carbs for plenty of energy, and foods rich in calcium and omega-3 fats.” says Lisa 1. Iodine: Iodine is extremely important during early childhood. It helps ensure normal physical and mental development of your growing child. When breastfeeding, a mother’s dietary iodine requirements increase a staggering 80 percent when breastfeeding3. 2. Calcium: Calcium is crucial for the development of your infant’s teeth and bones. It is important all mothers include a rich supply of calcium in their diets and through supplementation to reduce the risk of their own bone and teeth calcium depletion, which can lead to dental and osteoporosis problems later in life4. 3. Omega-3’s: To continue supporting your infant’s growing brain and nervous systems.

Five-minute beauty tips for new mums Mums all know that finding time to look after yourself can be a bit of a challenge at any time, let alone with a newborn baby in the house. We asked the experts to share their five-minute beauty tips so you can squeeze looking great into your day. Try using natural oils in your beauty routine. A little touch is all you need to feel refreshed! Try dabbing a moisturiser with a little peppermint oil around your cheekbones and under the eyes. It’ll refresh your makeup, adding a slightly dewy look and the peppermint scent will invigorate you! Try the U Skin Solutions Peppermint and Jojoba Combat and Hydrate Moisturiser. A tinted lip balm with a minty flavour is also a great option! A touch of colour will bring some life back to your face (especially if you are sleep deprived!) and the slight tingling sensation of the peppermint will ever so slightly plump up your pout. Try the Yes to Carrots Lip Tint – it’s 95% Organic, Paraben & Carmine Free. Lauren Roberts, Editor at bellabox.com.au

One of my tips for new mums is to combine relaxing products with feeding time, for example, give yourself a beautiful warm foot soak (just use a large bowl from your kitchen) using bath salts that contain relaxing essential oils. You can do this while you are feeding bub. My second tip is to use a multipurpose product, such as coconut oil. Coconut oil can be used as a lip balm, a hair treatment and a moisturiser. Because we often have little time for ourselves as new mums, it helps to have one product that can perform a number of jobs! Sam Crosby, Founder Ayana Organics, ayanaorganics. com.au

kidmagazine.com.au 29

The number one thing that makes me feel better when I’m feeling decidedly average is colour. Lipstick can take you from feeling like scummy mummy to yummy mummy in seconds. If you have a spare two minutes, dust your face all over with a mineral powder (there is literally no technique or blending required, just put it on the brush and swirl it around your face), a quick lash of waterproof mascara, bronzer on the cheeks to give you that ‘just been on holiday’ glow and some hot long last lipstick and you’ll feel a million bucks. Kylie Osborne, Owner Reveal Hair & Makeup, revealhairmakeup.com.au

For a ‘quick, 5-minute face’ - pre-mixed tinted moisturiser and/or primer with hint of glow will give your complexion instant colour. Add a dot of concealer and some curled lashes with a stroke of mascara. Lip balm and you’re done. Dry shampoo is perfect to use between shampoos. Focus on the hairline and crown as this is where hair looks unwashed first. Headbands are also a great accessory that can look chic not cheap Dale Dorning, celebrity hair & makeup artist, daledorning.net

How to throw the perfect baby shower A baby shower is a beautiful day for a mum-to-be to spend time with her family and friends and celebrate the little person who will soon be entering their lives. Organising one can also be a stressful time so we have put together some tips and tricks to make the baby shower experience an enjoyable one. DIY or outsource? Depending on how far along your pregnancy you are, the thought of organising a baby shower may fill you with dread or have you so excited you may burst. Either way there are endless suppliers out there who can help take the pressure of you. You can opt for an event planner to organise the whole day including invitations, catering, decorations etc. or you can opt to outsource only elements of the day such as the cake or a lolly buffet. What you decide on will depend on your budget and the time you can dedicate to tracking down suppliers. If you decide to go for a DIY approach, don’t forget that you probably have family and friends who would love to help out. If they offer, take them up on it. If you have a friend or family member organise your whole event make sure you tell them what you want your baby shower to be about so they understand your expectations.

Themes A popular trend these days is the gender reveal baby shower. There are many ways you can do this type of shower. It can be as simple as

kidmagazine.com.au 32

having pink or blue decorations so guests know as soon as they arrive to opening a box of balloons, all either pink or blue once everyone has arrived. This is a fun way to tell everyone what gender your baby will be. If everyone already knows the gender you may choose to theme the shower along either a girl or boy idea with decorations, food, invitations etc. If you are unsure of the gender, themes could be your favourite colour, rainbow or a favourite children’s storybook such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You may choose no theme at all which is also fine.

Food glorious food If you are outsourcing the food for your event, whether it be to a caterer or friends, make sure they know any food restrictions (or aversions) you have while pregnant. The last thing you want is to not be able to eat anything at your own baby shower. If you have had any particular cravings throughout pregnancy it would also be good to tell them that as they may be able to incorporate that into the food. Either way, finger food is ideal for a baby shower. Guests will likely be

sitting around on chairs and not have a table to lean on to eat a proper meal. A google search of baby shower food ideas brings up endless ideas for what to serve if you are stuck for ideas. Serve your favourite foods or food along the theme you are having. A lolly or sweets buffet is also a really fun idea and guests can take away some lollies from the party to enjoy later. There are loads of suppliers who can create a lolly buffet for you or you can be creative with bowls and jars you have at home to create your own. The lolly buffet can be matched to

suit your theme so it also doubles as decoration.

Let’s all play a game Games can be fun but you know your guests so use this as a gauge to know how many games to play. You can turn your present opening into a game such as present bingo where guests write down 9 items they think you will receive and the first to make all off their list as you are opening wins a prize. Alternatively, you can purchase

kidmagazine.com.au 33

plain singlets and bodysuits and leave iron-on decals or fabric markers on a table for guests to decorate at their own leisure throughout the shower.

Present time If this is not your first child you may already have much of what you need for the new baby. A good idea either way is to have a registry so guests know what you need for the upcoming arrival. BabyList (http://babyli.st/ index) is a fabulous tool you can use to create your registry and add items from any website you find. Email the list out to your guests or include a link on the invitation and they will know exactly what to buy you and where to buy it from. On a side not, BabyList is also a great way to keep track of what you want to buy for your baby even if you don’t intend on sending it out to friends

Step 1. Take the rectangular balsa, and measure 2cm from the centre base, and rule a line to each corner. Use your ruler & trace over with your craft knife to cut out a triangle. Trim any splintered bits with scissors to get a neat line Step 2. Lined bunting: Use the sticky tape to mask lines on your balsa. Paint the uncovered sections, and once dry paint PVA over the gold section. Add glitter. Remove tape once dry for clean lines. Step 3. For the bunting - draw or trace some motifs, such as rabbits, flowers or stars onto paper & cut out as a stencil. Trace around shapes onto your balsa, and paint carefully in corresponding colours. Paint over with PVA and fill with glitter Step 4. To hang take a length of cord, and two aqua pegs per piece of balsa.

Did someone say Babymoon? A popular trend developing in recent years is the babymoon, a holiday taken by a couple prior to the birth of their child. Whether the holiday is to a far-off romantic destination or only a few hours drive away it is the chance to enjoy the company of your partner and prepare for the changes ahead of you. Sexual anthropologist and author of Sex Drive: in Pursuit of Female Desire, Dr Bella Ellwood-Clayton now has a 4 ½ year old son and a 2 ½ year old daughter. EllwoodClayton and her husband took a babymoon to Bora Bora when she was five months pregnant and it was the best trip they ever had. “We splurged and got one of those insane cabins right on top of the water that had see-through floors and a private balcony where you could dive off into blue, gorgeous sea”, she said of the holiday. A family wedding in Paris when she was six months pregnant was the catalyst Genie Pepper, co-owner of PLUM babywear (plumcollections.com.au), needed for her babymoon to Cassis in the South of France. Now with two children, Tommy aged five and Chloe aged three, Genie looks back on her babymoon with fond memories, “The babymoon was really special because we have not been on a holiday since Tommy was born 5 years ago. The holiday was just like a honeymoon. It was very beautiful and romantic. These days although my husband and I spend a lot of time together as we co-own our business Plum Babywear we rarely have time alone to just relax and enjoy each others company.” In terms of relationship benefits, EllwoodClayton explains that a babymoon can Dr Bella Ellwood-Clayton on her babymoon kidmagazine.com.au 40

assist in marking the change from couple to family, as well as being a fun time for the parents-to-be. Lee-at Jacobson who took a babymoon with her husband to Langkawi when she was 28 weeks pregnant said that while she and her husband have a really solid relationship there were benefits to taking the babymoon, “Any holiday together is always a good thing and we had a great time just relaxing and knowing that it would be the last for a while! I wouldn’t say it made me more relaxed going into motherhood, but it was a really fantastic way to break up the pregnancy and speed up the last few months.” If you are thinking of taking a babymoon, HotelsCombined (hotelscombined.com. au) has done the hard work and found the best babymoon resorts around the world. The hotels were selected based on packages on offer, with only the most unique, romantic and relaxing resorts making the cut. Genie Pepper with her two young children Tommy and Chloe

Available on 3D Blu-Ray, 2D and DV D Ju A prequel to the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz - Oz the Great And Powerful centres on Oscar “Oz” Diggs (James Franco), a travelling circus magician. Oz starts his adventures in Kansas and quickly finds himself in some trouble with the local Kansas folk. It isn’t long before Oz is up and away... finding himself in the beautiful, colourful and picturesque World of Oz. Like the 1939 classic, all heroes have their companions. The lion, scarecrow and tinman have all been replaced with a talking monkey, a tiny little china doll and a witch (Michelle Williams). Every hero needs a villain - two in fact, in the form of stunning actors Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. The ultimate fight then begins between good and evil. Who will win? Oz the Great and Powerful has a little bit of everything - fantasy, action, comedy, suspense and romance. That doesn’t mean it caters to everyone though. Friends and family I’ve spoken to have all had mixed reviews. You either love this movie or hate it. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of middle ground here. Fortunately, I loved it. It captured all the elements of a great movie, kept to its roots, was visually stunning, entertaining and kept me engrossed for the entire 130 mins. I would argue whether this was a movie suitable for kids though. On one hand it’s a classic fairytale of good vs. evil. On the other hand, it may be too ‘dark’ a movie with some scenes frightening kids. Plus, keeping any child under the age of 8 entertained for 130 minutes is a challenge upon itself.

Don’t Forget to Look After Mum too Nutrition Tips to Stay Healthy and Recover Postpartum By Cherie Lyden, Kids’ Nutritionist

The postnatal period is an amazing, special time for mothers and their babies. In amongst the joy and excitement we need to take time to consider what our bodies have been through and what they continue to endure as we breast feed and try to function on little or no sleep. Nutrition plays a very important role in helping our bodies repair themselves, helping us get through the day and of course directly effects the quality of the breast milk we feed our newborns. When is the right time? Most women are able to try breastfeeding, but even if you are not, my basic tips and advice are the same. The nutrients you need to stay healthy and recover will benefit you both in the long and short term. Stay Hydrated. You should drink around two litres of water a day to help with tiredness and energy levels, and to boost breast milk production. Eat at Regular Intervals. Whether it is 5 to 6 small meals or 3 main meals, evenly space meals to avoid hunger pains that lead to poor food choices. Plan meals ahead and take any help offered. If you haven’t got the time to cook for yourself, friends and neighbours will happily load up your fridge with healthy meals. Enjoy Protein Rich Foods. All food groups are important, but protein helps your body repair itself and stops you becoming ravenous between meals. Concentrate on foods such as fish, meats, dairy, eggs, legumes, nuts and seeds. Don’t Forget the Calcium. It is recommended that

kidmagazine.com.au 54

you consume 1300mg a day if you are breastfeeding or 1000mg a day if you’re not. Calcium helps with the prevention of osteoporosis in later life as well as an essential nutrient for healthy breast milk. Calcium rich foods include dairy products, fish such as sardines and salmon, legumes and dark leafy greens. Boost Your Energy and Your Immune System with Iron. Iron rich foods such as red meat, poultry, seafood, legumes, nuts and fortified breads and cereals will help beat fatigue, boost your immunity and help prevent anaemia. Take extra care to limit your intake of tea, coffee and excessive calcium (over the daily RDI) as this will slow iron absorption.

Consider Postnatal Vitamins and Supplements. In an ideal world we get everything we need from a healthy, balanced diet. In times of tiredness, excitement, stress and when our body has undergone labour and birth, the reality is we need a little help. Take a prenatal multivitamin and supplements such as fish oils to ensure your body is getting everything it needs. The most important thing is to look after yourself as well as your baby. Both of you need essential nutrients for physical and mental wellbeing postpartum. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and take the time to rest, recuperate and make the most of this very special time. Vegemite Scrolls Serves 24 2 sheets puff pastry 2 tablespoons Vegemite 1 1â „2 cups (150g) grated cheese 1 egg, beaten Preheat oven to 220°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Place pastry, 1 sheet at a time, onto a chopping board. Spread Vegemite over pastry and sprinkle with cheese. Starting from the edge nearest you, roll up pastry, 1 sheet at a time. Cut each roll into 12 equal portions (an easy way to do this is to cut each roll into quarters, then cut each quarter in 3). Place scrolls, cut-side up, onto baking trays, allowing room for spreading, and brush with beaten egg. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until pastry is golden and cheese is melted. Allow to cool for 5-6 minutes before serving. From Baby Bowl page 52. Egg Free, Wheat Free, Lactose Free, Vegetarian, Freezable kidmagazine.com.au kidmagazine.com.au 56 56

Starting your Baby on Solid Foods By Cherie Lyden, Kids’ Nutritionist

One of the questions I am most asked as a kids’ nutritionist is “when do I start my baby on solid food?” There is a wealth of information out there to help parents determine when and how to wean their baby. Unfortunately there are many conflicting views on the subject, and research seems to result in new advice that changes recommendations frequently. Meanwhile well meaning friends and relatives always have a view on the subject and you are more than likely exposed to an abundance of literature from selfinterested baby food manufacturers. When is the right time? The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Dietary Guidelines for Infants (2013) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Strategy (2003) both recommend exclusive breast or formula feeding up to the age of 6 months. At around 6 months both organisations suggest solids are introduced alongside breast or formula feeding until 12 months of age or longer. The simple answer for me is somewhere between 4 and 6 months. This is quite a broad range in a young child’s life. At 4 months your baby’s digestive system is only just developed enough to start some solids, and by 6 months it is much better equipped to process food. More research is certainly needed on this small time frame, but there are several factors that you can take into consideration before starting

kidmagazine.com.au 60

that will help you determine if your baby is ready or not. I suggest using the following checklist of physical, behavioural and motor development signs. • Physical. Is your baby 4-6 months old, able to sit unaided, has controlled head movements and able to grasp objects? • Behavioural. Does your baby seem unsatisfied after a breast or formula feed, wake more frequently, show interest in your food and demonstrates the ability to suck strongly or chew? • Motor. Has your baby demonstrated sufficient mouth development by saying simple words or building on sounds?

How do I start? The most important thing to remember is that first solid foods are to be introduced slowly and in small

kidmagazine.com.au 61

quantities, maybe even as little as half a teaspoon at a time. There is no official guideline for baby serving sizes, and remember milk is still your baby’s main source of nutrition. As a parent, you are the best person to determine if your baby has eaten enough to satisfy hunger and is responding positively to the feeding experience. You should also introduce one food type at a time so you can identify which foods, if any, your baby has an adverse reaction to. Ideally stay with one food for a couple of days before moving onto a new food.

What foods do I start with?

There is no established order of introduction of foods, but generally first foods include cooked vegetables, cooked fruit or ripe banana or avocado, well-cooked rice or iron-enriched rice cereal. Research has also suggested that red meat should also be included to counter-act a drop in iron levels that occurs in babies around 6 months old. Iron-enriched cereals have been commonly used for this reason, but iron from red meat and poultry contain higher levels of absorbable iron. In terms of texture, first foods for 4 to 7 month olds should be puréed or mashed with breast milk, formula or water so that they are silky and smooth. Between 7 and 9 months old babies have developed a swallowing reflex for coarser foods, so dishes can be mashed and have a lumpy texture. By the time a baby is 9 to 12 months old they can eat cooked or raw finger foods. First foods should be nutrient rich and without added salt, sugar or flavourings. Also avoid fat-reduced milk

www.watermelonkids.com.au kidmagazine.com.au 62

products, caffeine, honey and all nutrient poor foods that contain high levels of added sugars, trans fats and additives. As your child progresses from puréed food to finger food you also need to ensure that your child doesn’t choke on certain foods. Whole grapes, apple slices, seeds, nuts, celery and popcorn are a few to avoid until they are much older. In all cases remember to adhere to basic food hygiene measures when you are preparing meals, ensure food is not too hot and that your baby is safely harnessed in a suitable high chair. Introducing your baby to solid food sets the foundation for a lifetime of eating healthy, wellbalanced and nutritious food. It’s never too early to include your baby in family mealtimes and enjoy this latest and newest phase of your child’s development. As with all areas of parenting, you will need patience and dedication. A happy, healthy child will make it all worth it in the end. I remember, a few years ago, starting my maternity leave from work. I would sit around like a beached whale, bored out of my brain with nothing to do except wait. Now, oh how I wish I had 5 seconds to myself to even think about being bored. Suddenly my life started to move a little faster. And it all started the minute my little chubby bundle arrived home. With the lack of sleep and stress of being a first time mum, the concept of time flew out the window. 4am suddenly became an acceptable time to start the day, meals were eaten cold (because dinner time is the perfect time to try out tiny lungs) and anything that required cooking in more than one pot was classified as a gigantic effort. Besides, trying to cook a meatloaf with sides for 6 people while wearing a baby bjorn is not as efficient as it sounds. Take it from me. If your a new parent and you want something easy to prepare with minimal effort to cook that’s not going to compromise on taste or nutrition then soup is definitely the answer. It takes ten minutes to prepare. You chuck it all in one pot and leave it. Plus there are always left overs which can be placed in a container and frozen for another quick and easy meal. And we all know, nothing warms you up faster on a cold day then a big hot bowl of soup with crusty bread of course.

Nursery Essentials While it may seem that baby takes over the whole home when they are born, the nursery is their room in the house. It is the place they will sleep and dream, play and read, learn and discover. So you want it to be a beautiful place where they can feel safe and enjoy their childhood. Creating a dream nursery isn’t easy, particularly when you are already pregnant! From colours, to furniture choices and room layout there is a lot to consider and much of this will depend on personal preference. However, we do have a few ideas to consider when creating your precious bundles sleeping space. When choosing the colours for the nursery a neutral base is often best for a number of reasons. The first is, that if this is your first child and you intend to have more, a neutral base will cover both genders and you can add accents through pillows, wall hangings, bed furnishings etc. later. If the nursery will be babies room as they grow up a neutral base also allows more flexibility with decorating later, particularly if you are lazy decorators and don’t fancy the idea of painting too often. Neutral colours such as soft greys, beiges and whites can be mixed with navy, black or darker browns and then bold accent colours such as bottle green, fuschia pink or vibrant purple can be added. If you don’t know the gender of your baby this also makes decorating a lot easier as you can choose your accents after the baby comes along and finish the decorating then.

kidmagazine.com.au 69

When choosing furniture for the nursery, consider the style throughout the rest of your home and try to bring that into the nursery. If you have friends or relatives giving you second hand furniture, try painting it to give it a second life and to match in with your style. Also be conscious of the size of the room and your home when selecting your furniture. Cots and change tables can take up a lot of room so make sure everything will fit before you buy it. Depending on your budget and the size of your room you may want more or less furniture. Essentials are a cot (plus sheets), change table and wardrobe or dresser to store clothing. After that you can go wild with rocking chairs, bookshelves, toy boxes or whatever your heart desires. Baby monitors and other safety devices are also a good idea, particularly if you are a worrier! Creating the nursery for your baby can be a lot of fun but make sure you do it early enough so you aren’t too exhausted to go shopping or add the finishing touches. Stay away from paint while pregnant and also heavy lifting. Use your partner for that and friends and family if they are willing. Remember to enjoy the process! When bub is born you will be spending a lot of time in the nursery so make it a place you will all enjoy.
