THE KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA | BC & YUKON BRANCH | ANNUAL REPORT 2017
4
A year that not only harnessed new energy and momentum for many of our strategic initiatives, but also gave life to new ones. Without a doubt, our most valuable resource is our volunteers. They are the engine that drives our mission forward and gives lift off to everything we do. In 2017, a renewed focus and support was placed on volunteer engagement. A volunteer advisory committee was created and a Manager of Volunteer Engagement recruited to ensure our greatest asset—our thousands of volunteers—are supported, engaged and recognized today and into the future. Kidney disease, as we know, has no cure, which makes prevention key. In 2017, kidney disease prevention had great lift off and our Targeted Screening Program received $200,000 in funding from the BC Provincial government to screen 1000 at-risk people by the end of 2018. Kidney disease prevention also had lift off through our enhanced public and targeted awareness and education efforts. Despite the fact that 1 in 10 Canadians has kidney disease, too often kidney health flies under the radar. However, 2017 was a banner year for the Branch and together with our volunteers, we had great success promoting kidney health messaging both to the general public and to at-risk audiences. In fact, we garnered more media coverage via mainstream media outlets during kidney health month than ever before. Plus, our very own kidney health TV Show “PLUGGED IN” gained momentum, and increased its air time on SHAW TV in communities across BC, on SHAW Multicultural and now across Canada on SHAW Direct.
With no cure for kidney disease, we know that a transplant is most often a kidney patient’s best therapy. With 80% of all transplants being kidney transplants, increasing organ donor awareness and registration continues to be a priority for The Kidney Foundation. Through our campaign Saving Lives through Organ Donation, we have proudly engaged with community leaders to help make this happen. In particular, we are thrilled with the outstanding support we received from Mayors and Council Members across BC at their annual Union of BC Municipalities meetings this past September. Our work together to increase organ donor awareness and registrations is continuing into 2018. Another important goal of our Saving Lives through Organ Donation campaign is to increase the number of living donor transplants. In 2017, living donation got lift off when the BC & Yukon Branch launched a Living Donor Mentor Program to support those considering becoming a living kidney donor. Part of our mandate at The Kidney Foundation is to provide hope to kidney patients for a better quality of life—and to one day help find a cure for this serious disease. We do this by funding world class research, including supporting the innovative, leading edge patient-oriented research project, Can-SOLVE CKD—led by BC’s own, Dr. Adeera Levin. Our support for research and our support to kidney patients through our many programs and services is at the core of who we are and how we help. Our ability to support kidney patients and their families, of course, requires financial resources. And once again, our kidney community stepped up and gave incredible lift off to our key fundraising campaigns: Kidney Walk, March Drive, Kidney Gala, and helped us lift off a new and very successful Kidney Bike event. These are just a few highlights from 2017. We hope you will take a few minutes to read through our annual report to learn more about how 2017 was a lift off year here at the BC & Yukon Branch. However, it bears repeating, none of this would have been possible without the unwavering and generous support from our kidney patients, their families, volunteers, donors, supporters and staff. Thank you for helping us build a stronger foundation for kidney patients! ●

In 2016, the BC & Yukon Branch launched its very own TV SHOW, PLUGGED IN. The show promotes kidney health awareness and education in an innovative and light-hearted format. The Branch produces two shows per month and airs over 14 times a week on SHAW TV.
Organ donation and kidney transplantation saves lives.
SAVING LIVES THROUGH ORGAN DONATION
With over 80% of all organ transplants being kidneys, The Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFOC) has made a commitment to increase organ donation and kidney transplantation by 50% by 2020, through our “Saving Lives through Organ Donation” campaign. To make this goal a reality, KFOC has been reaching out to community organizations and leaders across the province—including Mayors and Council Members to gain their support.
GETS LIFT OFF IN 2017
MAYORS & COUNCIL MEMBERS SHOW SUPPORT FOR ORGAN DONATION In the fall of 2016, Mayors and Council Members passed a motion at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention to increase their efforts to encourage organ donor registration. This motion was the result of a resolution put forth by the BC & Yukon Branch and submitted by the City of Kamloops and Township of Langley. This was the beginning of an ongoing conversation between KFOC and Mayors and Council Members about how to help Save Lives Through Organ Donation. Over the past year, Mayors and Council Members across BC have been active in supporting organ donation through our Kidney Walks, and most recently at the 2017 UBCM, where KFOC interviewed over 70 Mayors, Council Members and MLAs on the importance of organ donation. These interviews were filmed for the Kidney Health TV Show—PLUGGED IN. Many more government representatives participated in our Saving Lives Through Organ Donation social media wall. ●

The increase in organ donor registration is thanks to the leadership of many: • BC government, in partnership with BC Transplant, who made organ donor registration easier, enabling British Columbians to register at any Service BC Centre or ICBC location • Community and corporate leaders, who have supported the cause and encouraged their employees to register their wishes • British Columbians, who have shared information on the importance of organ donation and have stepped up and registered their wishes • The BC & Yukon Branch’s Saving Lives through Organ Donation profile within communities

GETS A LIFT OFF!
As part of the BC & Yukon Branch’s prevention initiatives, $200,000 was secured from the BC Ministry of Health in 2017 to offer a Targeted Screening Program. As one in ten British Columbians has chronic kidney disease (CKD), and many are unaware of their risk, early detection is critical. This Targeted Screening program will screen 1,000 at-risk people in 25 BC communities over 18-months, wrapping up December 2018. Three screenings were held in 2017—in Burnaby, Victoria and Campbell River—with a total of 125 people screened. All participants take home a Health Data sheet with their results from blood pressure, blood glucose, urinalysis, creatinine and eGFR testing, plus they have individual time to review their results with a nurse. The Branch has also contracted with an external evaluation firm to forward test results to family doctors if requested by the participant, and to follow-up with participants 4 months after the screening to understand the impact the testing had on the individuals, and to compile data in a final evaluation report. Our hope is that, once people understand their level of risk for CKD and their current health status, they will be better able to adopt a lifestyle that may avoid or delay the progress of CKD in the future. ●
The best available therapy for most kidney patients is a kidney transplant. However, the need for organs far outweighs the supply, meaning that many people die while waiting for a transplant. The BC & Yukon Branch launched a Living Donor Mentor Program in the summer of 2017, with the hopes that this initiative will help increase the number of living kidney donors in BC and the Yukon. The Branch identified a need for people considering being living kidney donors to connect with those who have been through the process for support and information. Some of the mentors have already been successfully matched with potential living donors. Through the program, the Branch recruits living kidney donors to be volunteer “mentors” for people considering being a living kidney donor. These volunteers are matched with interested potential kidney donors to share their valuable experiences and insights as living kidney donors. All volunteer mentors receive peer support training to help prepare them for their role. “This new mentoring program is a great way to help potential donors make an informed decision. I enjoyed meeting my first client to share my experience as an unrelated donor and the emotions of being a donor trying to help someone live a better quality of life,” adds Elizabeth Black, living kidney donor and Living Donor Mentor Program volunteer. Since the program launched in July 2017, 8 volunteer “mentor” matches have been made. ●
