Serenity.. the new princess that will help your child go to sleep.

Natalie is a princess party performer who set up Happily Ever After in Swansea 3 years ago, over the years she has grown her collection of princesses but wanted to create an original character with a special story to help children specifically with trouble sleeping and hopes to add more fairies with other special jobs to help children over the next year.

Claire Mabbet a talented illustrator from Cardiff brought the story to life with her fairy tale pictures. www.facebook.com/ ClaireMabbettDesign Happy Learners Resources have been working on a range of downloadable education resources linked to the story. There are a range of literacy and numeracy activities as well as designing and colouring sheets. Perfect for parent and teachers. www.facebook.com/ HappyLearnersResources www.facebook.com/ happilyeverafterswansea

Serenity can make special visits to schools to retell the story and answer questions and the princesses can also make similar visits for fairytale topics. Natalie called upon local author, Rhian Howells to write Serenity’s story. Rhian is a Primary School teacher in Swansea and also enjoys writing children’s picture books. facebook.com/RhianHowellsAuthor

Gower Garden Therapies

what a wonderful experience!

I recently treated myself to some well deserved ‘me time’ with Gower Garden Therapies and had such wonderful experience that I wanted to share it with you all! I started feeling relaxed on the lovely sunny morning that I drove over to the small Gower village of Reynoldston.

The sun and the scenery really set the mood beautifully that morning. Although excited, I was slightly apprehensive of what was to come! However not for long. The sanctuary that is Gower Garden Therapies, is nestled into the most perfect of settings, a

gorgeous garden room surrounded by a picture perfect lavender filled garden. Nerys was so welcoming and friendly and made me feel at ease straight away. We initially filled out a couple of forms about health and skin care before I changed and settled onto the lovely warm and very comfortable massage bed. The room was light and airy, the smells of the gorgeous Neal’s Yard products filled the air. In dire need of relaxation and destressing, I opted to treat myself with the Indulgence Hot Stone package, 1 and half hours of pure bliss. Included was a hot stone massage, which I had never had before and certainly will be having again, a lovely facial and the most relaxing Indian head and foot massage that I had ever experienced. The word that sticks in my mind is bliss and as soon as it was all over I wanted to say, again please! Along with the relaxing massage, gorgeous aromatherapy smells and the soothing music, I was transported into another world. What a perfect way to start the day! www.gowergardentherapies.co.uk Tel | 07813 185306

Mr Stink

Giveaway!

This Summer, Sam Bradshaw Productions has teamed up with Chickenshed, to present a brand new musical adaptation of David Walliams’ acclaimed best-selling book, ‘MR STINK’.

Panda’s Rule – The Unusual Dream reviewed by Philippa Rae, Kidscene Book Reviewer.

The very kind, but lonely, 12year old Chloe invites the homeless Mr Stink and his dog, Duchess, to leave behind the wooden bench where they have taken up residence and secretly moved into her family’s shed.

Have you ever wanted to become a writer and see your name in print?

Matters become more complicated when Chloe’s mother – who has unfulfilled political ambitions – tries to take credit for Chloe’s generosity. And precisely who is Mr Stink, anyway?

Maria Abid does and though she’s only twelve has already published her first story book.

Join Chickenshed this summer for a brilliantly staged musical version of a warm-hearted and extremely funny story. We guarantee that you will laugh, you will cry and you might well also want to hold your nose!! Middle Grade Novel: The Boy Who Flew With Dragons Written by Andy Shepherd Illustrated by Sara Ogilvie Publisher: Piccadilly Press Andy Shepherd is a bright new flame on the children’s literature scene, and this is the third and final book in her acclaimed dragon’s series.

Middle Grade Novel: My Parents Cancelled My Birthday Written by Jo Simmons illustrated by Nathan Reed Publisher: Bloomsbury Birthdays are important to ten year olds especially when your rival is Chas Cheeseman and you’re determined that this year you will have be THE birthday that everyone remembers. So when Tom’s mum informs him that due to chaos in the household, his Lucky Birthday is going to be postponed, Tom is horrified. This is a delightfully off beat tale with some great irreverent silliness and light hearted black comedy appropriate for the readership. There’s a psychic Nana trying to contact the spirit of her dead dog flattened by sister, Meg’s pet pig, Tiny during a fall; Meg’s obsession with a curse from an imaginary tooth fairy and trying to recapture the runaway pig. The story is excellently paced with the excitement building with the clock ticking down as Tom races to fix family problems in order for his birthday celebrations to go ahead. The characters are well rounded and developed. Jo has captured the quirks and thoughts of Tom in an accessible writing style. Tom is typical of young brothers in that though fond of his younger sibling, he wants her out of the way so he can look cool in front of his friends. The narrative is packed full of hilarious little details which weave themselves seamlessly into the storyline such as references to a Chicken Whisperer; the deceased dog being hidden in a pizza box in the freezer and Dad’s unexpected success with homemade pasta sauce allowing him to give up writing ambitions. Hugely entertaining!

Tomas has formed deep bonds with Flicker, his little dragon and is terribly torn about releasing his companion. But we sense early on that Flicker’s own natural instincts are calling him to move on. Tomas and his friend’s lives have become enmeshed with the delight that growing dragons on the dragonfruit tree brings. And the beauty and enchanting mystery of these majestic coloured creatures each with their own special magical abilities. Letting someone or something go even when it’s painful to us can be very hard even if we know that ultimately it’s the right thing. Tomas is only young and though may be seen as selfish (understandably so) does feel uncomfortable with disobeying his dear Granddad. The story has more to unravel such as where the dragons live and truth surrounding the dragon-fruit tree. The book is a rites of passage story about growing up and finding your own way. Children with pets’ often first experience pain when a beloved pet is put to sleep to end its suffering. The dragons, also symbolically represent that Tomas too is beginning to want to spread his wings and make his own decisions. The characters are multi-dimensional with the ability to be better people and overcome their faults or previous actions rather than just set in stone as we see with Grim and his nemesis Liam. Andy has developed a warm and witty authorial voice, with a poetic turn of words at times even though she also interweaves such inventive devices as exploding dragon poos into the storyline! It’s a beautifully written story with a sad ending that will get you reaching for a tissue.

Reynoldston with a view to converting a pretty un-used outbuilding into a treatment room and hence Gower Garden Therapies was born! How many children do you have? I have 2 wonderful children- Phoebe is 11 years old and due to finish Newton Primary School this year and Lewis is in Year 9 at Bishopston Comprehensive School and he is about to start his GCSE’s.

With Nerys Holt

Tell us about your business. I am a qualified massage therapist, who offers bespoke treatments and holistic packages to clients within a beautiful garden room, which is located in the picturesque village of Reynoldston, Gower. Using Neal’s Yard Remedies my treatments include: Swedish massage, Hot Stone therapy, Facials, Indian Head massage and Thai Foot massage. I am fully insured and registered with The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) and The Guild of Holistic Therapists (GHT). I also offer therapies and treatments to children and young adults too. Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? I qualified with a BEd Degree from the University of Southampton in 1997 and initially worked in Primary Education. I have always been interested in holistic health and the benefits that holistic treatments can haveemotionally, physically and spiritually. Having been a stressed out teacher, I would often seek out a massage to de-stress myself. Whilst experiencing the benefits of massage first-hand, I realised that I wanted to make a difference to a person’s well-being and decided to train as a massage therapist myself! So, in 2008 I enrolled on a Level 3 Professional VTEC Diploma in Swedish Massage, Anatomy & Physiology at Gower College, Swansea. Two years later, I set up my own holistic therapy business and client-base working from home in Newton, Mumbles. It was during this time that I also registered as a Neal’s Yard consultant. Passionate about their ethos I used these beautiful organic products within my treatments and I was able to recommend/sell these to clients too. Since then I have gained further Diplomas and worked in Special Education using my massage training with children who have severe and profound multiple learning difficulties. In 2018, we bought a house in

How do you juggle child-care? One of the reasons why I set up Gower Garden Therapies in Reynoldston was so that I could work from home. Working as a massage therapist in Gower my client base includes local folk, holiday makers and wedding parties. The need to be flexible is crucial as my working hours are not Monday to Friday 9-5 since clients often require evening and weekend appointments. I have a website www.gowergardentherapies.co.uk which has an online booking system which allows me to blockout times when I need to do the school-run or take my children to after-school activities. This works really well as it not only allows me to work and juggle the children but clients can also see and book suitable appointments that are convenient for them too. This means I can be Mummy and self-employed with the added flexibility of controlling the families schedule and activities… (well most of the time!) My partner Mark is also fabulous and he will also help out when the need arises! What’s been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Being self-employed and working alone has its pros and cons. The need to market the business, network whilst building and maintaining a steady flow of business is crucial to your overall income. I am positive in my outlook and proactive in my thinking but marketing a new business takes time and energy. I have also been using/learning a lot about social media and I have recently set up an Instagram business account which also takes some nurturing too. Clients will also contact me out of normal working hours in different ways so I need to ensure that I check my phone/emails regularly and respond quickly so that I don’t miss appointments or group bookings. Networking is fundamental and I have been out there meeting local businesses, hotels and reaching out to local Primary Schools. This takes time and persistence but I have been delighted with the positive responses I have been receiving and the partnerships/ collaborations I have been creating. It’s also important to set aside quality time for yourself and to exercise so that I don’t burn out! I try and start my day with a brisk walk or a run over Cefn Bryn with Mark and the dogs which helps me to clear my head and focus on the day ahead. Yoga and a long soak in the bath at the end of a tiring day too is also a massive help! What advice would you give to other Mums wanting to start their own business? What are you waiting for? Go for it! I love the quote by Theodore Rosevelt ‘Believe you can and you are half-way there’. The thought of it can be quite daunting especially if you are leaving a salaried job (like I did) but if you have the passion, the drive and supportive people around you, you can do anything! Have a look into government funding for new businesses- there is also support out there if you are unemployed and receiving benefits or get in touch with Business Wales.

‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it’.

Your child can only win IF they have helped someone else to get ready. This could be from putting toothpaste on someone else’s brush, finding someone’s socks/shoes, high fiving to spread the ‘feel good’ vibe or getting the bowls out for breakfast. There’ll be something for most ages to participate in and help. Even my teenager gets involved!

3) Boundaries

What has summer got in store for you? Going back to work after having children is one of the biggest decisions a parent makes. Everyone’s reasons and choices are different. For me working in the day, during school hours, was the focus when I set out on my self-employed journey 14 years ago. I rarely stray from it and am very clear with my boundaries. Occasionally, when I do stray, it is not without careful consideration. Holidays can therefore impose a huge re-organisation of childcare needs.

Set your boundaries. If you work from home and have responsible children, then you should be able to allocate a couple of time slots to work in. If you have very young children, then the good old soft play areas can be helpful. In the past I have met up with other mums who have children of similar ages and we have co-worked in a soft play area and then had lunch (also saves on washing up!) If you are a full-time working parent then this is probably irrelevant and if you are a stay at home parent, trust me, soft play areas can give you a little piece of sanity to make that call to a friend or meet someone for a coffee/lunch.

4) Un-plug and de-screen Un-plug from the virtual reality of life and set boundaries as to when it is allowed; iPads, Xbox, TV, social media and all other things we access via a screen.

FOUR FABULOUS TIPS TO HAPPY HOLIDAYS...

As much as these can be life-savers, they can also impact your health.

1) Plan ahead

Too much screen time can:

Planning out my work diary is a necessity. I don’t book anything that can’t be completed at home because holidays are a good time to rest up together as a family.

∞ be a sedentary activity (unless it’s an interactive game, which is still screen time)

If your working pattern is set then plan excursions, activities and days-out/or in so that you have something exciting to look forward to. There’s nothing worse than having a day off or a weekend with the kids and having absolutely no idea what to do!

∞ insomnia can be created due to light emissions interfering with the sleep cycle in the brain. ∞ can cause a 24/7 life – never being able to switch off ∞ can contribute to lack of concentration and focus

Why not set up a countdown board where the kids can tick off excursions and activities? Or even creating a goal board for the summer?

It’s advised by the World Health Organisation that children under 3 should not have screen time at all & those aged 3-4 should not watch more than an hour a day.

This is something I love and do every year as it gives us focus, it gives us the reason why we do what we do and the feeling of excitement to look forward to something great.

Holidays are for enjoying, for spending time together as a family and making the most of our children’s childhood years.

2) Wake Up Earlier Ok, don’t fall off your chair! If you have early risers, make an activity for you to all participate in. I sometimes play a game called Helping Hand – take a morning where everyone must get ready and out of the house, this sometimes ends in frustration, shouting, annoyance etc? Que the ‘will you put your shoes on!’ being shouted repeatedly.

We will NEVER get this time back – don’t wish you had done things differently and don’t wish the holidays away!

With love and Positivity

Why You Should Be Making A Will to Protect Your Family Have you had a new baby, or are you expecting one? Congratulations! There’s so much to think about – cots, baby clothes, vaccinations, baby-proofing your home…

Why should you make a Will when you’ve had a baby? None of us wants to contemplate the worst, but when you have a child, you must. If you make a Will, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your children and will be taken care of according to your wishes if you die. No one knows what’s around the corner, but if you die without a Will, the law may decide who gets what, and that can take some time and mean that unwanted beneficiaries may inherit you’re assets. At Peter Lynn and Partners, we can not only draft your Will, but we can also assist you in drafting a letter of wishes to accompany it. This is a letter to your executors or your child’s guardians which provides additional information and instructions which do not form part of your Will. While it is not legally binding, it does set out your wishes and can give additional guidance on your children’s upbringing, education, and other important matters. Did you know that if you are unmarried with children, your partner may receive little? Many people think a ‘common law’ partner (someone they live with as if they are married) has automatic rights to inherit if their partner dies. They don’t. Without a Will, they might have to go to court to obtain a share of your assets, and even then, it’s not guaranteed. Fewer people are getting married today than at any time in the last 100 years. But, sadly, the law hasn’t caught up with that fact. The reality is that if you die without a Will, your unmarried partner is not automatically legally entitled to anything.

Confidence is an important part of learning to speak Welsh as an adult.

It can sometimes take confidence just to walk through the classroom door – particularly if it’s been some time since leaving formal education.

But in all the chaos and emotion a new baby brings, there is one thing you mustn’t forget about – planning for your baby’s future by making a Will. A Will is one of the most important things a parent can do to make sure their child is provided for and cared for by the people they choose if the worst was to happen suddenly.

In the worst case, that could mean your partner not being able to stay in the family home or not having enough money to bring up your children. It’s of paramount importance that you make a Will to ensure that your partner and children get what you want them to have.

Some people may also lack confidence in their own ability to take on a new subject such as Welsh, however the message at Learn Welsh Swansea Bay Region is that anyone can learn. All our courses are run in a friendly way, where the emphasis is on speaking and enjoying the Welsh language right from the start. We deliver a range of courses in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot at different levels of fluency, whether learners are new to the language or already speak a little. Courses are also available for fluent or lapsed Welsh speakers who are eager to brush up their skills. Free, digital resources are available to support people’s learning, while there are also countless opportunities to practise speaking Welsh, whether pub quizzes, book clubs, coffee mornings, guided walks or gigs. With Welsh, people often underestimate how much they already know. The Welsh language is all around us, in place names and road signs, in schools, libraries and the community in general. Getting people through the door is one thing, but confidence continues to play a part as people progress through our courses, strengthening their skills. Many of our students say that learning Welsh has given them greater confidence in other areas of their lives, and there’s no doubt adult learning can transform lives. As our tutors get ready for the new academic term, it’s never been easier to find a course near you, and from September onwards, all courses will be priced £90 (concessions also available). To find a Welsh course or opportunities to practise your Welsh, go to learnwelsh. Teulu - Creative - 148x210 - v01.pdf 1 10/06/2019 11:24:03 cymru.
