Give the Gift of Christmas For children and young people who have suffered severe trauma, food insecurity, poverty and even homelessness, Christmas is a severely distressing time. Their loneliness engulfs them as they compare their experience to those more fortunate. Many do not enjoy a hot meal or receive a gift from a loved one. Instead, they will spend the Christmas period hungry and, very often, alone. This Christmas, Kids Company is trying to meet unprecedented levels of need. With poverty rates in London among the worst in the UK, we are expecting greater numbers than ever before at our annual community Christmas party held on Christmas Day. To try and meet this challenge we have diversified our fundraising efforts and we urgently need your help. We need crucial funds to provide our children, young people and vulnerable carers with warm clothing, presents and support during this extremely difficult time of year. Please help us give the gift of Christmas to a vulnerable child. Here are all the ways you can donate: Crowdfunder: http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/give-the-gift-of-christmas/? Letter fro Eighteen years ago, when I first started Kids Company, I thought that if you evidenced the children’s need and the quality of the interventions, that it would automatically lead to proper funding. No one told me that politics is not so rational! It remains a truth that the children and young people we work with are some of the most devastated and disenfranchised. Every day they negotiate assaults to their dignity and safety. Imagine living in one of the richest countries of the world and then being shot at and/or stabbed. University College London found 50 per cent of the children they interviewed had witnessed the above, with 1 in 5 of them having been stabbed or shot. Our academic partners have clearly demonstrated that the children’s relentless sense of terror is leading to structural and functional changes in their neurodevelopment. They are neither immoral nor random, they intelligently adapt to conditions of adversity in order to be able to survive them. In a violent neighbourhood you need to be aggressive to be safe. And then a national scandal unfolds, as we discover across the country children are being violated in Rochdale. Fifty per cent of the girls who were sexually abused were not put on the child protection register – where enhanced care would be due to them legally – because the local authority didn’t want to negatively impact their key performance indicators.

om Camila When childhood maltreatment becomes a commodity, manipulated to feed national narcissism, we can be sure we have a sickness in our society. The disease is the dishonouring of the contract of childhood, where adults are supposed to take responsibility for the care of vulnerable children. Politically, we wait for this enlightenment. But in the meantime the most beautiful exchanges are taking place as donors and volunteers reach out to the children and young people at Kids Company. Through love, as well as practical support, we restore dignity and rekindle the children’s hope. In childlike delight, our kids will be anticipating Christmas presents. We will do our best to cushion them against potential loneliness. But the gift you give them will last beyond Christmas. It is a reminder of how potent human kindness is and how much all of us are touched by it – those who give and those who receive. So, it is with a deep sense of gratitude that we send you a big hug and a reminder that the bloomin’ kids have eaten us out of house and home! So please help us replenish if you can! From all the staff and children of Kids Company, I wish you a Merry Christmas! Love Camila

Success Stories A letter from Charley My name is Charley and I’m studying History at Manchester Metropolitan University. If you asked me two years ago if I was going to university, I would probably have said no. Why, you may ask. The reason being is that university for me was a big thing. One of the fears I had was that I simply wasn’t ready. I went to college for three years because I had to retake my AS Levels. For many, that would be seen as a failure. For me, however, it meant a better understanding of myself in terms of what subjects were right for me, and it helped me prepare for university life.

‘I’ve been keyworking and mentoring Charley for the past three and a half years, and during that time have seen her take on and overcome enormous challenges to achieve her goal of getting into university to study History. I can honestly say that Charley is the most dedicated and hardworking person I’ve met, and it has been an absolute privilege to spend time with her. I went with Charley on the day she moved into halls, and watching her put her own key in her own front door was one of the proudest moments I’ve had.’ Sarah, Charley’s keyworker

This inner growth that I made in the space of three years would not have happened without Kids Company. They gave me a chance to realise how much I really wanted to go to university; that it was possible. And they gave me the support I needed to achieve the right A Levels to get in. I could argue that without their aid, I wouldn’t be studying History right now. It wasn’t just the tutoring that Kids Company offered me to get my writing and organisational skills up to scratch, it was also the keyworking aspect that I cherished and appreciated. Getting to university was for me a massive achievement, and I am proud to be here. Unlike many people where university is just a ‘hooray, three years of being a student’, university lit up my heart and made me shed tears of joy. I’m studying History because I am passionate about it.

Venesha ‘My brother brought me to Kids Company when I was nine. They supported me tremendously throughout my youth, helping me with my education – at college and then with getting into university – as well as housing, and with job training. They also gave me lots of emotional support so I could achieve positive things in my life. I had lots of ideas, and one of my dreams was to open my own childcare company. Camila and her team at Kids Company helped me so much, and I have now reached that goal.’ We have known Venesha for over 15 years now and we are absolutely thrilled to have watched her grow into a confident and successful young woman, who is reaching her potential. http://roseeducationandplay.co.uk/

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO...

THE SUMMER The summer holidays should be a joyful burst of freedom and fun for kids across the country, but thousands of children in the UK fear the arrival of six weeks without school. The safety, structure and support networks offered by schools and teachers in term time disappear, leaving children alone at home, going hungry, or roaming the streets with noone to look after them.

can use to contact experienced keyworkers when they have a crisis, to stabilise the situation. This can mean: providing childcare for our young parents who need to continue work during the holidays; finding safe housing for those who are living on the streets; providing emergency legal advice; intervening in gang activity and crime to protect our young people; or handing out food vouchers, goods and clothing for those going without.

Our second provision is in the form of fun! Over the summer our Poverty Busting team organises wonderful respite breaks which allow our children and young people to get away from the stresses of home and the city, to wide open spaces and fresh air. This year, we organised over 40 activities, reaching 8,000 Our provision is two-fold:Firstly, children - teaching them to climb we continue many of our regular rocks, negotiate rough waters in services and offer extra support through our Crisis Support hotline, a canoe, cook over a camp fire and learn to put up a tent – all which our children and families the while creating happiness and During the summer months, Kids Company has to step in to fill the gap and support our children and young people with food, shelter, positive activities and life experiences, while trying to support and mentor them to make the right life choices.

giving them a sense of being really cherished. We went to the theatre, on yoga retreats and up mountains. No one can put a price on this initiative. It just takes one smile, one laugh, one high-five to know just how much these children and young people delight in a break from their turbulent lives. Each year it would be impossible to put on these transformative trips without the extraordinary generosity and warm welcome from a number of special companies and individuals who invite our children and young people to their space in the countryside.

Vicki’s hygiene workshops Kids Company’s Placements team works with a number of excellent clinical colleges and universities, offering students work placements at Kids Company when they need to complete part of their training. We are incredibly lucky to have such intelligent and committed students within the charity, and sometimes they go above and beyond. Over the summer, post-graduate students from the Kings College Hospital Dental Hygiene and Therapy School visited our centres to run health promotion workshops. Victoria Harrison from KCH facilitated and guided the students who arrived armed with dental models, masks and gloves, and free toothbrushes and toothpaste for the children. Topics covered ranged from teeth-cleaning techniques to how to find a good dentist nearby and what foods are “tooth friendly”. The kids had a great time and we were very pleased with our feedback from Vicki, who said: ‘I was very impressed by the food you had, and you’d obviously thought about it. No fizzy drinks and sweets floating around.’ The sessions were brilliant, and we are so grateful to Vicki and the fantastic students from KCH for the time and effort they made for the children. On behalf of us all, THANK YOU!

Kids Company Audit As part of our government contract for the grant that we receive, the independent audit company Methods carries out a quarterly review of our accountability and interventions. This verifies our results in relation to our interventions and outcomes for children and young people. In our latest review in September 2014, Methods found:

‘The data provided demonstrates that Kids Company has significantly exceeded its grant targets based on the intervention definitions provided.’

11

In June 2014 we launched a national campaign called ‘See the Child. Change the System’, to remodel the delivery of social care and mental health services for vulnerable children. Throughout the country these services are in crisis and are repeatedly failing to adequately protect and support vulnerable children. The injustices that have recently come to light in Rotherham and Sheffield give evidence of a broken and under-resourced system that is leaving too many children with little or no protection.

Camila introducing the launch of the campaign on BBC News Centre for Social Justice Report Our campaign was launched at the same time as a major new report by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), entitled ‘Enough is Enough’, in which damning evidence has been collected of a child protection and mental health system in crisis. Kids Company collaborated with the CSJ to help them research the failures of the system and to help obtain anonymous testimony from senior workers within the system. 12

‘We must not shy away from the painful truths revealed by this report. To do so would be another abhorrent injustice and tragedy inflicted on the vulnerable children and young people. They deserve us to exercise the same courage in facing up to and addressing the problems which exist within the relevant systems in some parts of our country, as they demonstrate daily in enduring and surviving their ‘childhoods.’ Quote from the CSJ report

Children’s Independent Taskforce The campaign aims to create change for the current model of service delivery for vulnerable children. To facilitate this, Kids Company has formed an Independent Children’s Taskforce to research and design a new model. We have assembled an Advisory Board of prominent experts and thinkers across a range of sectors which so far includes: • Chair of the Taskforce: Sir Keir Starmer KCB, QC, former Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service. • Dr Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England; • Lisa Harker, Director of Strategy, Policy and Evidence for the NSPCC; • Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury; • Professor Peter Fonagy OBE; • Euan Sutherland, former Chief Executive of the Co-operative Group; • Professor Bill Fulford; • Andrew Webb, Corporate Director, Services for People at Stockport Council and former president of the ADCS; • Lord Victor Adebowale CBE, CEO of Turning Point; • Dr Peter Green, Consultant Forensic Physician and Consultant in Child Safeguarding; • Derrick Anderson CBE, Chief Executive of Lambeth Council; • Javed Khan, CEO of Barnardos; • Dawn Howley, care-leaver and Kids Company Representative for Young People; • Anna Gill OBE; • Annie Hudson, Chief Executive of The College of Social Work.

Netmums Poll Kids Company collaborated with Netmums on a poll which has revealed that millions of Mums’ votes are at stake and now up-for-grabs because of political failures to tackle child abuse. The results were released in an exclusive by The Sun newspaper, and showed that almost two thirds of mums believe NONE of the political parties have ANY policies to help vulnerable children in the UK, but an incredible 9 out of 10 would vote for a political party which committed to doing more. Camila has branded this ‘a wake-up call for politicians’ in the run up to the next General Election. 13

Press Coverage Over the summer, government ministers organised meetings to discuss See the Child. Change the System, and the campaign has brought about a public admission by Children’s Minister Edward Timpson MP; that there is ‘more to do’ to protect vulnerable youngsters. It has been featured in the national press including The Guardian, The Daily Mirror, BBC News and The Times, as well as The Evening Standard, LBC Radio and sector specialists Community Care and Children and Young People Now – the subject is close to so many hearts.

If you haven’t signed yet, please visit: seethechild.org Together we can show government that we do care and that there needs to be political action in the form of cross-party support for the taskforce and its model. Every child who needs help should get help, without exception. You can follow progress via our website, facebook page and @SeetheChild on Twitter. We always need campaign volunteers. If you’d like to help please email laura.butterfield@kidsco.org.uk for a supporter pack.

Campaign Supporters Since its launch in June The Royal Society of Public Health, The Royal College of Nurses, The British Association of Social Workers, The NSPCC, Barnados, The National Union of Teachers, The National Union of Students, The Children’s Inter-Agency Group and many others have voiced their support. We were extremely lucky to receive pro-bono support from several brilliant agencies and we would like to say a huge thank you to: Our creative partners and friends AMV BBDO, as well as Fishburn, Mindshare, Gorgeous, Lean Mean Fighting Machine, Delta 7, Fire Pineapple Marketing and The Grace Partnership. We would like to thank Netmums for backing the campaign from the beginning, and collaborating on the poll, as well as a host of other mummy bloggers and support groups, including Britmums and MumsNet. Our heartfelt thanks also go to all of our celebrity supporters, who shared their childhood photos for the campaign to raise awareness for vulnerable children suffering in the UK. Thank you in particular to Dynamo and Russell Brand for filming individual appeals for the campaign, and helping us reach thousands more people. Finally, thank you to everyone who has signed the petition and shared it with family and friends. You are the driving force of the campaign, and only with your support will the voices of the children be heard. Please keep sharing.

Hungry Childhoods Exhibition In October the children and young people of Kids Company created a powerful art exhibition entitled Hungry Childhoods. The installations illustrate the devastating effects food insecurity and chronic hunger had on their development. For many of our children and their families, missing meals and going hungry for whole days is a common experience. The exhibition ran in conjunction with the release of new evidence from a research study by the University of Reading, funded by Ella’s Kitchen®, which engaged a group of children and their parents at Kids Company. The results found that: • 86% of the participants of the study had very low food security. • Over 80% do not have access to a nutritionally balanced meal regularly • 69% had not eaten enough due to lack of food This is the first study of its kind, where children as young as five described their experiences of food insecurity. The exhibition began at the Kids Company Gallery and proved such a success that the Southbank Centre exhibited it during their What’s Happening for the Young? festival in October, a series of events exploring child rights across the globe. It then went to Kids Company Bristol’s Urban Academy and ‘The Room with a View’ in the Whole Foods Market, in Kensington. Paul Lindley, Founder and CEO of Ella’s Kitchen® says: “Britain’s economy is the 6th largest in the world. It would therefore be disgusting, and morally indefensible, should there be any permanently hungry children in our country today. Yet there are, and a growing number; 1 in 4 kids only have one hot meal a day – which is usually a school lunch. Perhaps it’s only when you physically see the first hand expression, through this exhibition, of how it feels to be a constantly hungry child that you can really understand what a nutrition problem we have in our country.” 16

17

One of the main pieces of the exhibition was a food tree, and one of the young people – Kelly – wrote a piece about what that metaphor means to her. Life, for everyone is a journey of continual learning; a gradual unfolding of lessons learned through lived experience. Yet this journey can be extra rough when a person finds themself alone through no fault of their own, without roots or a support network and is struggling to access the basics for survival in life. This tree symbolises many things for me, but I’m particularly thinking about the inter-connectedness and cooperation of the trees in a forest’s biosphere - especially the importance of the older, bigger ‘Mother’ trees. Through the below-ground fungi networks in soil, the big trees send out nutrients and energy to whoever needs it most- especially the young seedlings who are the future of the forest’s health. They do not compete for resources or act as ‘individuals’ in a Darwinian ‘survival of the fittest’ fashion but, as one large organism cycling the energy back and forth between the smaller parts indiscriminately. We can learn a lot from nature. Kids Company has helped me in so many ways, and by giving me the chance to be part of a ‘forest’ of growth and love when no one else could be bothered or couldn’t see past my family background circumstances. I wasn’t just another ‘grown up kid of a dead crackhead’ or an underclass statistic to them. They have given me an opportunity to develop my creativity and supported me in important practical ways when the NHS and other agencies failed in their ‘duty of care’. It’s been like a ‘mother’ tree to me and I feel truly blessed to have had their support. 18

Mizuho Mizuho has been a consistently loving and generous supporter of Kids Company. Their most recent collaboration with us came in the form of sponsorship of one of our talented young artists, as part of the Year of the Bus Sculpture Trail, curated by TFL and Wild in Art which launched in London’s Trafalgar Square in October. The Kids Company bus was unveiled with 27 others covering a huge range of subjects. The Kids Company artist’s design was entitled ‘Childhood on a Bus’, and aimed to raise awareness of the challenges that London’s underprivileged children and young people face, many of whom escape from abuse and homelessness by sleeping on buses overnight.

The commission was especially poignant for the artist who has seen and heard these issues first hand. All the bus sculptures can now be seen across London in a public trail. Kids Company and Mizuho’s collaboration is outside Mizuho’s London office, 1 Friday Street EC4M 9JA. All the buses are up for auction next year, with the proceeds going to Kids Company, Transaid and London Transport Museum. Mizuho, thank you so much for your continued friendship. We are so grateful to you. Thank you also to TFL and Wild in Art for everything you have done to bring about this wonderful exhibition.

Boot Camp In December of last year, we called on No. 1 Bootcamp because one of our young people had relapsed into drug use and needed the motivation to kick her addiction again. We thought that once we had helped her detox, a week of intensive exercise would do wonders for her mental health and help her regain her focus. So her keyworker spoke to Deena Reynolds, the cofounder and owner of No. 1 Bootcamp alongside Karen McKenzie. Deena straightaway said what a great coincidence it was to hear from us, because she and Karen had been discussing how they might be able to help Kids Company kids, having read about us in the news. Since that day, Kids Company has been able to send one of our young people each month, for free, to their camp in Norfolk. What started as a rough idea has become one of the most positive and effective treatments we have found to help our troubled young people break negative habits and gain some healthy perspective. Through the constant encouragement and tough rules set by the trainers (who won’t take no for an answer on the 6am runs!) each young person who attends the boot camp comes back invigorated, in better shape and feeling more confident with the energy to stick to their goals. To Karen and Deena, and all the incredible staff at No. 1 Bootcamp: Your commitment and belief has been transformative to each of the young people you have taken under your wing. We absolutely adore you, and are so lucky to have you in our lives.

Kids Company team proud to wear pink for the Trois Etapes Giro 2014 This year Kids Company was delighted to be the chosen charity of one of the four teams racing in the inaugural Giro edition of the Trois Etapes Pro-Am Cycle Series. The challenging four-day journey took place in the summer, through the stunning Dolomite Mountains in Northern Italy and the event - the only one of its type - gives riders the chance to experience team cycling under the race conditions of a Grand Tour. We were honoured to have the fabulous former Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre and former World Time Trial Champion Emma Pooley leading our team! We would like to say an enormous thank you to

our amazing team of riders for raising over £25,000 for Kids Company whilst showing incredible teamwork and determination on behalf of our children and young people. We would also like to thank the sponsors Goldman Sachs, organisers Cosaveli and the volunteers who worked so hard to assist with the event. The sensational Carlos Sastre and Emma Pooley were inspirational team leaders and kept spirits up for the duration of the tour. Nigel Cobb, one of the riders from Goldman Sachs, said, ‘It was an honour and privilege to ride with so many talented athletes and great people both professional and amateur, and very special to ride for a charity as worthy as Kids Company. The pink jersey was worn with pride.’

Kids Company Gala Dinner In October we celebrated our most successful Gala Dinner to date, out-stripping last year’s total to raise a staggering £1,023,400. Three hundred friends of Kids Company came to the Banqueting House in Whitehall, and enjoyed a hearty meal, and entertainment from the adorable Jack Whitehall, whose comedy warmed our hearts and lit up the room. Three Kids Company young people then spoke about their incredible journeys out of destitution, inspiring our guests before the Chairman of Sotheby’s

A further 300 volunteers spend Christmas Day with our children, and on Boxing Day they help us with the clear-up afterwards! Thank you so much, you are the most fantastic Christmas Elves! To face the unprecedented level of need this Christmas, we have launched a public appeal to help us raise enough money to Give the Gift of Christmas to thousands of extremely vulnerable children and young people and to continue supporting them over the challenging Christmas period. As well as our Just Giving appeal, for the first time, Kids Company has created a Crowdfunder to find a new and innovative way of raising money that allows fantastic ideas and initiatives to become a reality. You pledge donations online towards a target amount and receive a reward in return. We have been so lucky to receive support and reward donations from several of our wonderful brand partners and famous friends. Following this success, Fendi has generously partnered with us again for Christmas and hosted the event ‘Season with a Reason’ at their Sloane Street store. Parents and children donated some beautiful presents for our kids. CENTRE NEWS

Urban We might be finishing the autumn term now, but we would like to cast our minds back to August, when our young people celebrated their exam results! Together, our students achieved 256 qualifications, across GCSEs, OCNQs and Arts Awards. This good haul is down to the hard work that the students put in, and the unfailing commitment and encouragement of our teachers at the Urban Academy. Congratulations to all of you! We are so proud. 32

Academy Our summer residentials in the Gower Peninsula created some wonderful memories. We unpacked and settled in, then got into groups for our activities. Day one for us was kayaking and facing the fear of water, while exploring the coast line from rock pools to crab clusters. The evening was filled with games, art, music and films!

The rest of the week included body boarding, beach time, team building exercises, coast scrambles, mediation and social time. From the coasts to the caves, the Urban Academy students flourished, facing challenges, supporting each other and creating life changing memories. In this beautiful environment we built aspirations and let go of fears. The students themselves say it best:

‘The activities and people on the trip, including teachers, were amazing... socialising is everything, there’s some pretty cool people in this world.’ Raz, age 19

“I enjoyed - everything!!! Liked the activities, the staff that came with us and the ones at the centre, I also got to know people I didn’t know before. Loved my group!!!” Dee, age 17

Treehouse To celebrate the fantastic summer we spent exploring the countryside at Grange Farm and in Herefordshire, the children and staff of the Treehouse have made two documentaries about Forest School Summer Residentials. Staff from the Treehouse spent ten months training with Kids Company’s Forest School manager Katharine Slater, and the residentials were designed using the Forest School ethos of reconnecting with nature, playing forest games, learning to build and cook on a fire, and building shelters to protect from the elements. In beautiful surroundings the children and young people 34

played together, looked after the farm animals, went on pony treks, and even made their own honey from the farm’s hives. We played ‘Capture The Flag’, slept in yurts and sang songs around the campfire. Our documentaries – which we screened on 17 December at the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn – capture the real spirit of our adventures, and show how transformative and energising the trips can be for our kids. The children have also been making their own Hollywood style film trailers and we chose the best three to kick off the festival.

Arches II This term has been a whirlwind at Arches II, with 100 children and young people coming to our Club Time each day. Our new activities this term are twice-weekly swimming in Brixton and Camberwell, plus yoga and meditation and now a Space Club, where our children aged 6 to 12 learn some basic astronomy, starting with the moon and Earth. Over the year we will be getting to know the rest of the planets in our solar system. We will go out and use a telescope in our local park to look at the stars and learn about formations, then come back and make our own papier mache planets. As usual, food is never far from our minds, and we are now introducing our Salad Superstars! In these sessions our four-tosix -year-olds learn basic cooking skills by preparing and putting together salads each day for the other children to enjoy at dinner time. To celebrate Christmas, we held a Christmas Talent Show at the end of term, and a Christmas theme week at Club Time organised by the Flourish team. We made Christingles, Paper plate angels, tree decorations, and decorated festive biscuits (food, food and more food!)

On behalf of all the children and staff at the Arches II, we wish you a Merry Christmas!

Morgan Stanley Heart Yard The summer was blissful at the Morgan Stanley Heart Yard. The garden is transformed! Alex Brookes – who visited us from the Volunteer Centre Southwark – helped us to come up with a design after lots of input and ideas from our clients of all ages. The finished garden includes a nature trail and woodland area, a creative arts area, a growing zone, and a seaside area with a sandpit and beach hut (now lovingly known as Kidsco Club Tropicana!). Thank you so much to the lovely, hardworking team of young people from Urban Academy, Paul, Dennis and Jennifer, who worked alongside Alex and the staff to build our garden paradise.

38

Fast forward to Christmas, and we have started our Crafty Parents workshops, which offers a space for mums to learn to sew and use textiles to make Christmas stockings for their children, and some special trinkets to go inside (we’ll add a few extra treats and sweets in too). We hope these lovely home-made stockings will make the parents proud of their work, being able to give their children something so special and personal, and putting smiles on their little faces at Christmas. It wouldn’t be Kids Company Christmas without building a proper atmosphere! So we are transforming the art space at the Morgan Stanley Heart Yard into a Grotto, filled with fairy lights and music. There will be a few mince pies too, because it wouldn’t be Christmas without out them!

BRISTOL Life continues to flourish in Bristol. In November we opened our brand new Urban Academy, and our South Woods education centre for KS3 and KS4 has also finally moved to a building that can fit all the staff and children. Thanks to wonderful donations of furniture and some excellent decorating by the team at SIFT Media, they are looking like traditional multi-coloured Kids Company centres. Our team of psychotherapists and keyworkers is growing, because even though we are paid by our fantastic partners Bristol City Council for our education provision, as we get to know the children, many of them disclose terrible child abuse on which we need to act urgently. And now we are ramping up for Christmas. Michael McIntyre injected a burst of delight and hilarity when he brought his show to Bristol at the end of November. The proceeds of his marvellous show went to Kids Company. Michael, our fabulous and hilarious friend, we are so grateful to you for your love and support! Our Bristol tradition of having Christmas Day lunch with our most destitute young people and families continues this year, and all of the centres will be holding their own mega Christmas parties, where our kids will receive bags of presents and food hampers. Our Colour a Child’s Life scheme has grown, with teams of volunteers coming to our young people’s houses – which are in a depleted and deprived state – and doing them up. We had a fantastic team from Lloyds Bank’s Brands and Marketing department and one of their team members wrote a moving account of their experience working with our young person, ‘L’, which we’d like to share with you here: 40

‘Before the day [we] ran fundraising events and reached out to friends, family and colleagues for donations of homeware to secure the materials needed. The living room, bedrooms, kitchen, hall and bathroom were all painted, pictures hung, curtains purchased and he even had a digibox donated by a team member! Fences were painted and the garden cleared. ‘L’ was keen to get involved in the decorating himself and to get to know the team helping him with his home. He had a great time and the team really valued having ‘L’ around to consult, and also getting to know him better. During the day ‘L’ had shared his passion for his local football team. When the team got back to the office after the event, they did a further round of fundraising to buy a football shirt, signed by members of his favourite team, which now hangs proudly on the wall of his new flat.’

Job Therapy Our Job Therapy team works to help our young people gain the necessary qualifications and experience to either return to education or go into employment. Since Jan 2013, 310 young people aged 16 to 25 who were not engaging in education, employment or training have taken part: • completing 5,928 hours of work experience • engaging in 36,260 hours of career enhancing activities alongside their educational and therapeutic activities We have worked with over 100 London based employers across a wide range of industries to provide career talks, workplace visits, work placements and internships. As a result • 42% of our core cohort have entered part time or full time employment. • 30% of our core cohort have moved onto further or higher education or other training. 41

Kids Company in Liverpool Over the past year, Kids Company has begun working in Liverpool and this has been quite an incredible experience. In partnership with M D Productions Dance Company, we produce a therapeutic performing arts programme for 63 vulnerable and disadvantaged young people from across the city. Each young person receives 12 hours of coaching each week in dance, singing, costume or set design, and they then work together over the course of the year to devise and rehearse a polished production. Emotions, which showcased to an audience of 2,400 at The Liverpool Empire in July, was a vibrant and uplifting success. The programme – now in its second year – is underpinned by the Kids Company holistic support model, delivered by Kids Company keyworkers, who assess all the young people involved and develop personal care plans for each one, depending on their individual needs. As part of the programme, the young people are also provided with business mentors who help them to set career goals and to engage in work experience across a range of local industries, including the world of entertainment. We are delighted to welcome back 39 of the original young people, as six go into full-time employment, eight head off to higher education and 10 train with internal staff to become teachers and mentors for the new recruits to the project. We are hugely proud of all the young people involved, and wish to send a particular thank you to Miguel Doforo for his inspiration, leadership and incredible artistic talent in producing our collaboration. KELLY These beautiful designs are the work of Kelly, an artist who especially loves working with textiles and experimenting with translating drawing and concepts into fabrics and textures. Kelly has come to Kids Company at different stages in her life since she was a teenager. Over the years we have seen her get through devastating adversity and heartbreak with a profound dignity and determination. Despite the odds being stacked against her, she has continued to produce an abundance of exceptional artwork – some of which has found its way to Dame Helen Mirren as a ‘Thank you’ gift, and as accessories on Camila’s dresses. Kids Company provides Kelly with therapeutic support and with a space in which to work. She is a beloved member of our Head Office community. Our art department has asked her to help as a consultant with the design of Camila’s Christmas Grotto, because her creativity is sure to produce the best ideas. Kelly is an inspiration to all of us, and we expect great things of her when she sets up her business next year. Watch this space! 44

OVERSEAS CHALLENGES Arctic Biathlon We want to send a huge, warm thank you to all the teams who went to Sweden this month for our annual Arctic Biathlon. The biathlon is in its seventh consecutive year, and proves time and time again that it is the ultimate team endurance challenge. The teams compete against one another on husky sleds and Nordic skis in temperatures as low as -30 degrees centigrade. It’s not for the faint hearted! To all the teams, thank you for taking on this freezing challenge in aid of Kids Company. If you think you would like to take part in the Arctic Biathlon next year, please email suzie.curran@kidsco.org.uk for more information.

Meet the Staff Member Andrew How did you begin working for Kids Company? I’ve been part of the Kids Company family for a year and a half now. I answered an advertisement posted by my university’s careers’ service, and so began my career! I’d followed Kids Company’s amazing work from afar, and was delighted by an opportunity to get involved at such a busy and promising time. What is a typical day for you? I work from two pm until late into the night – Camila works around the clock, and her office is busy 24-7 with teams of assistants working morning and night! Because she is dyslexic, we take dictation from Camila in her correspondence, including the hundreds of thank you letters that she writes personally; we assist her at events; manage her unbelievably busy diary; welcome her guests and give them tours of Kids Company so that they can see first-hand what we do. It is varied, sometimes stressful but always great fun!

46

What is it about Kids Company that makes you stay? I think that everyone at Kids Company is incredibly committed to a shared belief in how important a safe, happy childhood really is – for everyone in society. I feel proud to work for and with amazingly courageous young people, and as part of such a dedicated team. Do you have a favourite memory during your time here? I took part in Kids Company’s Christmas celebrations last year, and had a marvellous day making masks and puppets with the kids – and eating a delicious dinner! I have my name on the list again for this year, and am looking forward to another fantastic Christmas. Has Kids Company changed you? I’ve learned so much during my time at Kids Company about the landscape for children’s social and mental health services in Britain, and about the utmost importance of nurturing happy, healthy children in building a positive, modern society. This cause is one I will champion throughout my life, both personally and professionally.

Meet the Volunteer Mel How did you become involved in Kids Company? I was talking with a couple of friends and discovered that they had both worked at Treehouse and they both said that it would be the perfect place for me - they were right. What struck you about the Treehouse when you arrived? Feeling right at home – I was sitting in the reception area waiting for the Volunteer Co-ordinator and it just felt right. That first impression has always been reflected in the time I have been volunteering here. I feel truly valued, the culture is inclusive and supportive - you are never ‘just a volunteer’ but a valued member of the After School Club team and this is translated through the attitude of generosity, care and respect from all the staff What have you found the most challenging moment? It’s hard to think of one in particular. Challenges often arise: how to involve kids in an activity when they say nothing interests them, managing conflicts or inspiring confidence. There are always challenges that you meet

within yourself. But with the kids and always with the support of the staff, you find a way through. What has been your favourite moment? It would have to be the Treehouse summer party in the garden. It was truly amazing – an afternoon of so much love and fun, music, laughter, reptiles, mums, dads, kids, carers. It was absolutely magical. If you could say anything to any future potential volunteers what would it be? Be authentic: be present, be humble, and enjoy - as it is an utter privilege and joy to be part of. Steve Tart of the Treehouse says: ‘Mel’s talents and commitment seem never-ending. She works in the film industry and has managed to wrangle expensive rigs for some of our films! She’s also a gardener extraordinaire and has lovingly tended to the Treehouse garden throughout the year, and she facilitates therapeutic yoga for children with learning difficulties. She always has a giant smile and is a pleasure to be around.’

THANK YOUS

Newbury Racecourse In July horse trainer Charles Egerton organised The George Frewer Charity Race Night and Gala Dinner in aid of Kids Company. The event raised over £90,000 which was vital in helping Kids Company provide our kids and young people with the support they need over the summer holidays. We would like to thank Charles Egerton and Martin and Caroline Frewer for their dedication and hard work as well as all the guests and amateur jockeys for showing their support.

Burberry Foundation Burberry has been phenomenally generous in supporting Kids Company’s work this year. It provided generous funding which has contributed enormously to the running of Christmas and our Safeguarding work. And as if that wasn’t enough, hundreds of Burberry employees will be volunteering with us this Christmas, buying gifts for our children, creating decorations, wrapping presents and packing food parcels, and more will volunteer throughout next year to transform children’s homes as part of our Colour a Child’s Life programme. We are thrilled to have them on board for our children and treasure their help. Thank you Burberry!

Newton Prep put on their walking boots for Kids Company The wonderful pupils and teachers from our long-term supporters Newton Prep took part in a whole-school sponsored stroll around Battersea Park, with some children walking over 20km! They raised a staggering £23,933.94 for Kids Company and should be very proud of their achievement. Head Mistress Mrs Alison Fleming said: “We want to be a school that shows a strong sense of the community beyond our own walls. There is something very powerful about children raising money to help other children who live no more than minutes away from their school.” Camila was delighted to collect the cheque in person at Newton Prep; we are delighted at such a fantastic fundraising effort!

Mortimer Nannies’ festival fundraising feats! For the third year in a row, Tanja Jelley and the lovely team at Mortimer Nannies have supported Kids Company through their onsite crèche and babysitting service at the Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire. This summer they also attended the brand new Somersault festival in Devon. With the help of some enthusiastic volunteers they raised over £4,000 this year!

Thistle Hotel’s incredible 1400 mile fundraising relay Thistle Hotel staff rose to a spectacular fundraising challenge, completing a 1,400 mile charity relay! The teams ran, swam and cycled all the way from Inverness to London as part of the Lite@ Nite campaign, which has raised more than £66,000 for vulnerable children, split between Kids Company, Kidscape, Barnardo’s, The Children’s Society and The British Triathlon Foundation Trust. To celebrate their achievements, there was a magnificent finale of over 150 employees who paraded through London!

Elemis partnership continues to flourish We’d like to thank our long-standing supporters Elemis for generously providing Kids Company with over £100,000 worth of products and materials over the last five years. This includes massage oils, towels, sarongs and other essential toiletries. This has enabled us to give thousands of healing and therapeutic massages to help our children and young people overcome complex traumas. This year they also funded and participated in a ‘Paint a School’ day for St John Burns Primary School in Battersea, creating a beautiful playground mural for the children to enjoy. We’re delighted to continue our partnership and look forward to working together through our Corporate Angels scheme, which celebrates the ongoing support of our dedicated donors. Youth Hostel Association The Youth Hostel Association , through its charity ‘Breaks for Kids’, have provided half the cost for our much-loved summer camps at Edale in Derbyshire and Okehampton in Devon. They have contributed an incredible £12,000, which enabled children with emotional, behavioural and social problems to escape both their anxieties and their cramped city surroundings to enjoy a huge range of fun activities safely in the beautiful English countryside. 49

We are so grateful to every person who gives love and financial support to Kids Company. We treasure the encouragement you send our children, and although we could never find enough paper to thank each one of you in person, we have chosen to mention some of our monthly donors below.
