Welcome to our new green magazine! We hope you enjoy your online magazine experience. Hype Magazine is now also optimised for the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod. We have found plenty of things to do and see for your family around Cairns and North Queensland this winter. Plus there are 5 great family competition prizes up for grabs on page 16, including a family pass to the circus, movie tickets, skating, bowling and the bird of prey show. So start sending in your entries! Hype Magazine has become a major supporter of the local Australian Rainforest Foundation (ARF). Over the coming months we will be assisting them in getting their messages out to the community. The month of July is Coins for Cassowaries and ARF are asking people to donate all their foreign and local change to help the endangered cassowary. Various schools are collection points for the Coins for Cassowaries Month, if you would like your school to be involved call ARF for more information on 4041 1489. Westpac Banks in the region are also collection points. These school holidays I am heading off to Cobbold Gorge for a five day camping trip with my family, I am looking forward to sitting by the campfire and generally having some relaxing family time with my hubby and kids. As well as providing lessons for able bodied clients CCHP currently has clients with Cerebal Palsy, autism and special needs who are benefiting from riding horses. One of our clients is Jasmine, a 7yo who has Cerebal Palsy. Jasmine has been riding at CCHP on a weekly basis for approximately 2 years. Her mother Shannon says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Horse riding has enabled Jasmine to develop her skills and riding ability at her own pace which helps builds her confidence. The therapeutic aspect is an added bonus. She has even competed in her first dressage competition and is very proud of her blue ribbonâ&#x20AC;?. Research has also shown that working with animals (and horses in particular) can influence people in incredibly powerful ways. Community Assistance organisations are increasingly using Animal Assisted Therapy programs to break through the barriers that prevent individuals from participating fully in the community. A relationship developed with a horse can offer challenges to help overcome fears, build up trust, respect and compassion, develop communication skills, problem solving and coping techniques, self confidence and self esteem. CCHP has developed an Animal Assisted Therapy program that is suitable for use by schools, youth assistance organisations, etc. All lessons and trail rides are conducted by qualified Riding Instructors and Trail Guides who are accredited with Horse Safety Australia and hold current Senior First Aid Certificates and Working with Children Blue Cards. Happy Birthday to Z00! Cairns Tropical Zoo celebrated its 30th Birthday on Saturday May 15th and a huge day was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Over 800 visitors including lots of Wildcard yearly pass holders came to experience all the extra activities on the day. Live music, face painters, a caricaturist, Tjapukai Aboriginal Dancers, and a visit from Kooee the giant kangaroo all helped to entertain the crowd. Mayor Val Schier was there to cut the cake(s) which were demolished in record time by a large contingent of ‘hungry for cake’ children. You would think they had never eaten cake before! The Palm Cove Surf Life Saving Club were there as well doing a fund raising sausage sizzle which exceeded all expectations. Seven hundred snags were sold on the day producing one of the club’s best ever fund raisers. They all worked very hard! The colouring in competition had over one hundred entries making the winners in the different age groups a difficult choice for...

Zoo wildlife staff mingled with the visitors with a variety of animals to add some extra up close and personal animal encounters during the day. The highlight of the day was the 70kg Burmese Python which slowly slithered over the grass to the amazement of the children. Capture the Moment We all have some great pictures that have captured a special moment between a child and a special man in their lives. They could be their dad, granddad, uncle foster dad or even older brother! These are the type of pictures that make up the Thanks Dad National Exhibition and, without pictures like yours being contributed, they couldn’t run this wonderful exhibition of these moments. They are celebrating the 10th year of this competition! The National Thanks Dad Photo Competition is again calling for entries. Why not encourage everybody you know – adults or young people – to enter this Competition. Make Your Own Cornflake Biscuits Instructions

Beat margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Sift flour and baking powder. Add sifted dry ingredients and cornflakes and mix well for a few minutes. Place a tablespoon of mixture onto ungreased baking paper. Bake in 180 degrees oven until lightly browned. Takes around 10 mins. When cooled share with your family and friends, yummo!

The Cairns Ukulele Festival Cairns will be host the inaugural Cairns Ukulele Festival on the 3rd and the 4th of July. The festival, totally dedicated to the tiny four stringed instrument encompasses an art exhibition, a build-your-own-ukulele workshop and dozens of concerts. With festival locations such as a tropical atol on the Great Barrier Reef, on the foreshore of the Pacific Ocean and rainforest, the punters at the Cairns Ukulele Festival are sure to soak up the local aloha of Tropical North Queensland. The Cairns Ukulele Festival aims to ensure thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something for everyone. The art exhibition that is held at the Cairns Regional Gallery, will excite art lovers. Some 50+ emerging and established artists have been given a ukulele each to decorate, and if the ukes the organisers have received back is anything to go by, the exhibition will be delightful! At the end of the exhibition, the ukes will be auctioned and proceeds will go to a charity organisation. The charity in question, is the Duchenne Foundation. During the opening of the art hexhibition, there will also be a CD-launch of a CD compiled for the Foundation by an online forum that has over 20,000 members. In the week leading up to the festival, there will be a workshop on how to build your own ukulele, taught by renown Californian luthier Rick Turner. The course was booked out within two weeks.

The Cairns Ukulele Festival pulled another rabbit out of its hat when they announced two world-renowned overseas ukulele artists, who will be part of another Cairns Ukulele Festival component, the “Great Adventures Ukulele Island Gig”, which will be held Friday July 2nd on Great Adventures Green Island. The two artists, Hawaii-born blues ukulele artist Jason Arimoto and USA mainland born The Jumpingflea will both perform a concert, and conduct kids workshops on Green Island, an island on the Great Barrier Reef. The evening program consists of an open air screening of the ukulele documentary/movie “Mighty Uke”, at the Courthouse Hotel, in the middle of the CBD. The 3rd of July will transform the CBD, with ukulele performances on the Esplanade and other city venues. There will be more than 150 performers that day, all playing the ukulele! Ukulele Clubs and groups from around the country are flying up for the festival and will be strutting their stuff on the Saturday, as well as several local schools and other string bands. The afternoon and evening program includes a Guinness World Record attempt (largest ukulele ensemble) and a performance by Seaman Dan - all free of charge! Certainly a great day to take the family for a picnic on the Esplanade! On the 4th of July international and national headliners will grace the stage of the Tanks Arts Centre, a performance venue set in the rainforest. Canadian James Hill and Daniel Ho from Hawaii, as well as blues ukulele player Jason Arimoto are flown in especially for the festival. Other international and national acts include The Jumpingflea, The Old Spice Boys, AJ Leonard, just to name a few. There will also be free and ticketed workshops by most of the artists, including a free workshop by Mike Jackson. Mike Jackson is a wellknown childrens’ performer as well as the author the highest selling music books in Australia; the “Uke ‘n’ Play” range of books. He’s an expert instructor that will get young and old playing within one workshop, so anyone interested in having a go, is welcome! The Season for a School Fete!

The first part in the Autumn edition of Hype Magazine; clearly outlines’ organising a school fete requires dedication, however obtaining & securing publicity and sponsorship for a school fete can be challenging! This guide provides a brief outline of how your fete can seek to benefit from publicity and sponsorship. It is not intended to be a complete guide. Far from it, we hope you will add your own ideas and experiences to make your event a success for your school and your sponsor. Value for Money A executive from Unilever Australasia the company behind the brands; Lipton, Flora, Dove, Sunsilk, Rexona, Streets Ice Cream and another 20 leading brands told me once that “$5000 sponsorship is easy to obtain from any major corporation if approached with a good marketing, fundraising, and long term partnerships plan. But unfortunately many are not!” Business Don’t Just Give Money Away Schools fetes that become good corporate sponsorship partners realise that sponsorship is a business deal, not a donation. Sponsoring is a form of advertising for a business and potential sponsors want to exploit the commercial opportunities associated with an event, cause or organisation. The prospective sponsor needs to feel that the opportunity you’re presenting is the highest and best use of their resources; it’s a matter of cost vs. reward. A Reality Check

Are you merely offering to put up a banner at the event and include the sponsors name on the program, or will there be advertising in mass media? How will the sponsor be recognised in these ads? Will the sponsor have an opportunity to display their products? Will the sponsor receive a VIP invitation to the event with a free family meal and ride passes for their family? Our business is presented with sponsorship opportunity several times a week and I’m sure most other business are too. What makes your fete any better to sponsors then another fete or event?

Mix and Match Ask your local butcher to supply the meat for the fete at cost price or near cost in exchange for naming rights of the BBQ area. He may even like to operate the BBQ himself, enabling him to cook the food to its fullest flavor plus personally meet and greet potential new customers.

Fireworks at school fetes are big draw card many business love to sponsor fireworks as they know it attracts a bigger graphical audience. A benefit to the school and obliviously the sponsor too. Offer the sponsoring business naming rights of Fireworks, full media logo recognition, 12 months business advertising in the school newsletter or better still a permanent sign on a fence or sporting complex. Profitable hospitality Immediately after the event write thank you letters or appreciation certificates to all the sponsors, business and volunteers who donated time, money or goods? Furthermore include the sponsor in the school yearly newsletter mail out. Invite them to other events to just attend. The sponsor will feel a sense of recognition and for a 50cent appreciation certificate you have more then likely secured your next years sponsor again. It is easier to keep a sponsor then to gain one, so look after the ones you do have. Publicity Publicity is an extremely important aspect - it is vital that you get the message out to the local community. Local newspapers, magazines and websites will generally give free publicity for events. Most television media have a free community notice program. And a number of radio stations run a community hot line and will promote your event on air at no cost. Check with local councils and main roads before placing banners and signs on streets as this may be prohibited in some areas, but a great source of publicity if permissible. School newsletters are the major promotional tool to school families. Even advertise in neighboring school newsletters. Actively promote the event draw cards and businesses which have offered goods, services or sponsorship for the event. A Yellow Pages associate told me recently â&#x20AC;&#x153;they ceased sponsoring $5000.00+ to the largest event in a particular town as the company was not included in all forms of media!â&#x20AC;?
