From The Editor... Welcome to the first edition of KIDS ON THE COAST, our new monthly magazine designed to bring the best in community news, events, features and more to families throughout the South Coast KZN! As I sat at my desk pondering how best to put into words the joy that comes with winter and school holidays, I thought about all the cold winter mornings, walking in the dark as well as rushing to the hot shower to warm up. I then found a quote that perfectly sums it up very beautifully: “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” John Steinbeck. See? Those miserable, cold winter mornings are worth it! They make the warm, sunny mornings oh so much more divine by contrast!

SNOOPY DOGGY PARLOUR

So, here’s a thought: Why do any of us bother leaving the South Coast during this time of the year? Growing up, I knew many families and friends that left town at this time of year and now that I am a parent, it’s rare that I roam too far away from home. After all, why should I when we live on the coast! Where there’s SO much to see and do! Our holiday bumper issue was beyond exciting to put together. My team has discovered some personal favorites from Amanzimtoti down to Scottburgh with lots of places in between. One of my favourite things to do was finalizing our official list of the places that we’ve visited, discovering new places to eat and visit and not forgetting our own bucket lists.

SAFETY FIRST... Holidays are always a great time for everyone and the excitement, but we tend to forget the basics. The journey to your holiday destination starts before you get into the car. It is recommended that you create planned checklists and stick to the plan. Once you are at the destination you can break free. One of the things you should have on your checklist is the car-chair. The national road traffic act specifies that all children should be secured in a car chair or booster seat. As per the act a child is any person between the ages of 3-14 and shorter than 1.5 m tall. The Automotive Association (AA) further advises that babies under 15kg should be secured in a rear facing (SABS) approved car chair whilst older children up to 25kg should be secured in a booster chair. It is advisable to shop as regularly as possible for breaks with at least one 1 hour break per 5-6 hours trip to allow the kids to play, stretch and eat. A First Aid Kit for the car is a great idea too! And that at least one of the adult should know how to use the contents of such a kit. “Never go on trips with anyone you do not love”. And it is this love that makes your loved ones’ safety important. Ernest Hemmingway.

Four Walls ESTABLISHED

2017

A Bistro by day with a lovely courtyard setting and a tranquil dinner setting by night serving delicious food with excellent service.. The team at Kids On The Coast had the pleasure of carrying out a food review at Four Walls We had a lovely experience. The service was administered perfectly and all the dishes were presented with care and distinction. The choices were extensive and definitely covered all bases. An English breakfast with a large cappuccino and a yummy shortbread biscuit on the side was superb. Homemade flat bread (loaded with bacon and feta) with a delicious cherry yogurt smoothie. Our all-time favourite was the home made beef burger served with sweet potato slices and refreshing mango lemonade. I just couldn’t resist trying out the vegetarian toasted sandwich – roasted butternut, apple cinnamon and cheese, I know the flavours seem strange but it was the best sandwich I ever tasted. There's nothing quite a like a milkshake to make you feel like a kid again and that is exactly how I felt after tasting the “popcorn milkshake”. Best ingredients, delicious recipes, fine dining... you cannot go wrong at Four Walls Back To Basics is a cooking school for children that does just that, we go back to the basics and believe that "everyone can cook" The July Holiday Club schedule is packed with something to suit all kids: 3 July - Mexican Fajitas 4 July - Chicken Schnitzel + Chips 5 July - Lasagna (Homemade Pasta) 6 July - Chicken Noodle Stir Fry 7 July - Chocolate Cake + Decorations 12-14 July - Cupcakes Class + Story time with Princesses from Tales & Fables 17 - 19 July - Biscuit Class + Story time with Princesses from Tales & Fables This includes: - Receipes - All Ingredients - Disposable Aprons + Chef Hats Suitable for kids aged 6 - 12 Price - R100.00 per class (discount offered for all 5 classes - R400.00 for all 5) For bookings or inquiries: Tel: 031 903 1526 Email: whatswallycooking@gmail.com 22 Rockview Road, Doonside. kids on the coast

MERLE - 082 562 2541 7 TECOMA PLACE, AMANZIMTOTI

In the beginning ........ Back in 1987 when the Seadoone Mall was under construction some of the ladies who were operating the Toti Tuisnywerheid Cooperative in Toti Mall dreamt of opening a shop in the new Centre. And so, it was that after much discussion and with much trepidation Elme van Aardt, Driekie van Zyl and Esme Coetzee, together with their husbands Tom, Thys and Manie, who had been coerced to join in order to have sufficient members to form a Co-operative, opened Tasty Treats. Tom negotiated a rental of R 2000.00 per month and the shop was located where the Pharmacy has been until recently, but the doors opening into Checkers area facing the tills. As the Centre had not yet been completed, the only access that was available for early morning deliveries to take place was through the back of Checkers. You can imagine how popular these ladies were with their large crates trudging along the Checkers aisles whilst the packers were trying to prepare the store for the day's business. Looking back 30 years later, a person is astounded at the prices that were charged for the various products - Sausage Rolls R 4.00 per dozen; Pecan Nut Pie R 12.50; Vanilla and Chocolate Cakes R 15.00 and R 17.00 respectively. Later, Tasty Treats was moved to where Capitec Bank is now, with the rental of R 4000.00 and then, when the Centre was remodelled, it was discovered that, alas no provision had been made for the shop. After much negotiation, it was agreed that the area that had been designed as an atrium, with a lovely fountain, could be utilized as a shop and so the fountain was demolished and Tasty Treats moved to its current position. Over the years many members have joined and moved on. Today 30 years on, Elme and Tom are the only Founder Members still involved in the business. There are now seven bakers providing the most delicious cakes, savouries, lunches and tea time treats, not forgetting the melt-in-your-mouth fudge and much, much more. The beautiful fragrances emanating from the shop come from the potpourri oils that are on sale. Treat yourself to a visit and revel in the wonderful selection of goodies on sale.

You Want To Read This ! So if guns kill people, I guess pencils misspell words, cars drive drunk and spoons make people fat.. Read what the experts at Ripshot Firearm Academy have to say about firearm control.

1. Statistics prove that most attacks occur at close range, mostly between 1,5m and 30 cm! 2. Statistics also prove that more than 90% of all firearm handlers/ owners are unable successfully draw and fire at least one shot at the attacker before he stabs you, STARTING TO RUN FROM A DISTANCE OF 6 METERS AWAY! 3. The legal requirements to own a firearm does not prepare you for this. 4. Mind-set is everything. 5. Training is only second to mind-set. 6. Action always beats reaction (as long as you hit with your first shot.) 7. Anyone can be a target. Criminals get their guns from the most unlikely sources. (Another reason why law abiding citizens should never be disarmed.) 8. It does not matter to us where you are at the start of the class. What matters to us is where you are at the end of the course. 9. Ripshot will take you from whatever level you’re presently at and significantly improve you during the time that you spend with us

A Boy Name Joshua & A Battle Called Cancer On the 2 October 2013 age 7yrs old Joshua was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. We braced ourselves for treatment and his oncologist explained what to expect and length of treatment. Joshua was aware he would not be going to school for a couple of months. I explained to him about his disease and he said lets fight this! He had a positive attitude from the start. Two weeks into his treatment our laughter and hopes became clouded, it felt like the world had ended. On the 18 October 2013 he was incubated and they gave him 48hrs, no promises. He fought like a true warrior and pulled through. Joshua’s body was encrusted with burn like blisters, like a burn victim and the days that followed were a nightmare. They were not able to treat the leukaemia because of all his complications with various organs. He never once gave up the fight, and medically he should not be here. With the power of prayer, faith, doctors, amazing nursing staff, the will to live, support from family, friends and people we have never met pulled together and gave us all the strength to continue. On the 24th December he was released from hospital, he could not walk and the only words he could say was ‘thank you ‘and ‘Mom’. On the 31 December 2013 he was admitted for a bone marrow aspiration test, lumber puncture and had a port inserted. A week later we were given the good news that he was in remission. Rehabilitation was a slow process, learning to walk, talk, eat again, etc but he proved never to look at the negative. The emotional turmoil as parents is indescribable and should never be felt. Never once did we tell Joshua to give up, we told him: “God gave you to us to look after and keep safe and the only place you are going is home with Mommy and Daddy.” We told Joshua no matter what was wrong with him we will take care of him. We are very proud of his strength and true fighting spirit. The last 3 yrs have been challenging but he stands strong. In July 2015 Joshua went for assessments to establish which school would be suitable for him. The results were not what we hoped for, and he was classed as intellectually disabled. Thankfully there was an angel who did one of his assessments and she saw something in Joshu, he was accepted to a school in Durban. During 2016 we drove over 250km a day taking Joshua to school, there were many challenging days but he coped and he was like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. In 2017 he started a new school in Pennington, run by an amazing lady Ruth Hannah. He is reading, writing, going to fit to fit training, plays soccer, rides his bicycle and is a normal 10yr old. In November 2016 Joshua was given the awesome news that he had kicked Leukaemia’s butt. We are grateful for his second chance! kids on the coast

Last week Yvonne sent out a very special invitation to all her clients, friends and their families to the launch of Be Beautiful Boutique at their NEW PREMISES. Camping chairs and picnic baskets filled the park, as a fabulous fashion show was presented. The models aged from 3 and upwards did an excellent job portraying Yvonne's designs, with a beautifully decorated ramp, a dj / musician, photographers and journalists it was quite a glitzy affair. As a first of many we wish them plenty successful shows ahead.

LIZANNE

WAHL

PHOTOGRAPHY

Tell us a little bit about you? My name is Lizanne Wahl. I studied Forensic Accounting at the North West University and obtained my honors in 2011. I worked as a forensic accountant for 6 years until I realized that there must be more to life. I have since obtained my diploma in Photography and completed the Ultimate Photography Programme with Shaw Academy.

How long have you been a photographer? Photography has always been a passion of mine. Since I can remember, I had a camera in my hand, thus experiencing the world through the camera lense.

Have you travelled anywhere interesting? Travelling is another passion of mine although I don’t get to do it too often. I have been to Namibia, Swaziland and Mauritius. Each country has their own little treasures that caught ones eye but I have to admit that from all of them, Mauritius stole my heart. Don’t forget about the beauties of our own country. I recently went to St Lucia and was amazed by the natural scenes, animals in the area as well as the great hospitality of the small town.

What type of photography do you enjoy the most? This is a very difficult question to answer, as I love to take photographs of anything and everything. Whether it is a beautiful sunrise, a loving family spending time together, animals in their natural environment, the softness of a newborn child, a special occasion or glance shared between loved ones, or just something interesting that caught my eye.

Where do you get your inspiration from? My inspiration comes from everywhere, people, food, love, nature, colour, light, sound and smells. It is really impossible for me to limit this, as anything can trigger a moment of inspiration.

How can people get hold of you? You can email me at lwahlphotopraphy@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can phone me on 076 765 3655 or visit my Facebook page https://web.facebook.com/LWahlPhotos/

I Claudette Samuel Departmental Head (Hartley Road Primary School) used this maths CD for my son Arne from grade two . Arne spent many hours enjoying navigating through the maths which is graded from beginner knowledge to grade three knowledge in the various sections in Mathematics This was a great opportunity for Arne to consolidate his knowledge and go over areas he found difficulty in Maths It is an interactive maths programme which lays a solid foundation for basic concepts taught in Mathematics. I can happily say a big thank you to you Mr Khan for writing a Mathematical programme for learners in the Foundation Phase. Today my son is excelling in Mathematics at school as his love for Maths was enhanced by using your interactive Maths wizard CD. This programme will get learners who are battling in Number concepts in Mathematics to turn around and start to love Maths as they will be more confident in the application of concepts covered in Mathematics at school. A well invested R100 which will be multiplied a hundred fold when they are able to pursue careers where Maths is required. Claudette Samuel - Departmental Head (Hartley Road Primary School
