Flat feet can be defined as a condition where the arch that is normally present on the inside of the sole is absent.

This arch extends from the base of the big toe to the heel at the back of the foot.

Babies are generally born with flat feet. As they get into childhood, the little arch develops. Children’s bones and joints are very flexible and hence this causes the foot to flatten when they stand up. By the time children reach 6 years of age, the arch develops as feet become less flexible and the flat foot disappears.

In a small percentage of children, this may not happen and the flat foot continues into adulthood. Even with the flat foot condition, these children take part in strenuous physical activities and sports, without any pain or related issues.

However, in some cases, there could be an underlying problem which is diagnosed by the qualified orthopedic surgeon who prescribes the treatment required.
