Global Problem Solving Dear Readers,
E
nvision a world without piles of trash, pollution, water contamination, or starving and homeless people and animals. Is it just a dream as our planet experiences a drastic increase in population and technical progress? Believe it or not, a perfect world, based on the humane values of kindness and care, can become a reality, and some countries have already proven that solutions to most pressing global problems can be found. Often, all it takes is some effort and compassion. There are a lot of things that each of us can do to help build this world. If we want to go green, for example, we need to maximize our own awareness and the awareness of those around us. If we want to solve the issue of stray animals, we can start by fostering those in need and volunteering in shelters. Once again, increasing the awareness one animal at a time is the key. No matter what you wish to solve, one thing always seems to hold true

Flint Water Crisis By: Miranda Morris, 4th grade, Sheiko Elementary, West Bloomfield
F
lint Water Crisis is one of the biggest problems in Michigan, United States, and maybe even the world. Flint water is dirty, and that is dangerous. Flint water is yellow; it made many people sick. People kept drinking
it because they were told that there was nothing wrong with this water. Even today, people are still sick because of it. People from all over the state and other states donated bottled water to Flint residents. Even though the news about the quality of the water came out three years ago, the water is still yellow and people can not drink it. I want to grow up to solve the water problem in Flint.
Throw Your Trash Away! By: Nico Cazala, 2nd grade, Doherty Elementary, West Bloomfield
P
eople litter everywhere at any time. Why do they? Sometimes, they don’t see a trash can right away and get lazy to hold on to it or look for the trash can. Instead, they just throw trash out on the street, on the beach, in the park, or even at schools. Don’t litter! It’s dangerous. Birds think trash is food, and when they eat it, they may choke on it and die. How do we fix this problem? 1. Place more trash cans everywhere 2. Create new laws. Let people know they will be fined if they litter. 3. Install cameras to track people who litter.

Pollution By: Christine, 3rd grade, Sheiko Elementary, West Bloomfield
O
ne current global issue is pollution. Gas from the cars pollutes the air. When we inhale the air, we get sick. One way to stop the pollution is to use electric or solar energy cars. Littering is also a global issue. There needs to be more garbage cans on the street. This will make it easier for people to put the trash in the can instead of just littering. Everybody should think of ways to stop the pollution.
Save Our Environment By: Langston Spearman El, 4th grade, Sheiko Elementary, West Bloomfield
A
lthough there are many problems in the world, I am going to address littering. Littering is one problem to which we need to pay more attention. When people litter, trash gets stinky and dirty. Animals can eat it and get sick. Save the animals! On the beaches, you see thousands of trash items all over the place; turtles get stuck in the trash. Save the turtles! One way to solve this problem is to put more trash cans everywhere. Also, add recycling bins everywhere. To make sure everyone is following it, we need to educate people about not littering and charge people a fine if they don’t follow the law. People need to care about the environment more. Save our environment! DECEMBER 2019

FICTION
The
EMPTY By: Vanessa Chapin, 10th grade, Clarkston High School
T
here was a hole in his chest. Not a physical hole- but it felt hollow with a heavy nothingness, settling darkly beneath his breastbone. The first time he had noticed it was when he was much younger, although it was also much smaller back then, and he would only feel the horrible aching emptiness for a moment or two. Like when his mom slapped him with a wooden cooking spoon for doing something stupid. However, it seems to grow with age. Now it was a constant. When he got married, he forgot the hole existed for a short while. Maybe he should’ve known that it’d just come back even bigger. On the day his first daughter was born; it wasn’t a hole. It was a high and bright mountaintop, covered in the brightest evergreens and a bright sunrise swelling up hotly behind the peak he stood on. Everything was clean, fresh air, and soft grass under bare feet and the world, sitting at the tips of his toes. Who 6

knew that Time was strong enough to wear a great mountain down into a rubble filled ditch? Is emptiness a monster? Maybe it doesn’t have claws, but its tendrils of nothingness can spread. He noticed strands snaking through his marriage. He tried to kill them with liquid poison, but they thrived on it instead. He bought things to fill some space. A house. A few cars here and there. He desperately tried to transfer the contents of his bank account into the cracks that seemed to be webbing through every aspect of his life. Panicked, he numbed everything with the poison he’d come to crave. He let the poison bleed into his eyes and fists, and he saw red. She went to the hospital with cracked ribs and scared eyes. He got divorced. The days of standing on mountains were long forgotten. The hole was expanding, a little more every day. His daughters rolled their eyes at him, so he had another. It didn’t bring the mountain he’d expected, but he told everyone it did. Are you surprised that
nobody believed him? “My life is perfect!” he told them. “ I’m doin’ great!” he’d say. The emptiness smiled and twisted his lies into sharper teeth, and then they feasted on his shrinking soul. One day, when the hole was twined through every limb and thought, it began to starve. There’s no more soul. No love, not even any hate these days for the most part. Nothing except absolute exhaustion and the void it’d eaten, inky blackness and wavering echos. While he slept, the snakes, and tentacles, and thin webbing, and teeth, and long spindly fingers released into his skin. He woke, looked in the mirror at the shaking wrinkles, sighed, and said to the emptiness, “You win. I give up. I’m done fighting.” “Fighting?” the darkness replied. “You’ve never so much as pointed a sword at me,” it laughed. “The weak souls are the tastiest ones,” it finished. Then, grinning, the void took a bite out of his faltering heart. Its laughter echoed through the empty halls of the mansion as the man fell to his polished marble floor. www.KidsStandard.org
ANIMALS
Taking Care of Animals By: Victoria Gray, rd 3 grade, Sheiko Elementary, West Bloomfield
O
ne global problem that we need to solve is killing and destroying animals and their homes. That problem can be solved by telling people, who are destroying them, to stop and if they don’t stop, then the government has to step in and fine people who are not listening. We can help solve this big problem locally by adopting some of them, like cats and dogs. They need a caring home and people who love them. We can leave wild animals alone on their own in the farm or jungle, wherever they live; we should leave them in their home. Animals are important to us. We should care for them.
Animal Rights By: Maxfield Shaw, 4th grade, Springfield Plains Elementary, Clarkston
M
any people disrespect animals. There are many reasons why you should not hunt, kill, whip, or even hurt animals. I think mistreatment of animals is a big problem in this world. Zoos should not be a thing because it is basically taking an animal from its family and then trapping it in an enclosement. I think we can have heal release for hurt animals instead. And it is just plain old mean to the animals’ moms. Also, sending the animals to different zoos is mean to the animals once they get used to a different zoo. Big game hunting is when people travel to different countries just to kill animals for fun. People should stop because many cute, cool animals are almost
DECEMBER 2019
extinct because of it; one of my personal favorite animals, the bengal tiger, is almost fully abolished from this world. The dodos are gone because pirates did not like the sound they made at night, so they shot them. Lots of chinchillas were killed for their fur. Endangered species are a big problem in this world. A way we can solve this is to hire more rangers. Then we should have tracking devices for the animals because that way, if they get attacked, the rangers can know where the animals are and get to the exact place before the poachers even get there. And the people should protect their habitat by having more police guard the wildlife. Animal rights are very important because animals are living things and they make our world the way it is! So remember to be friendly to animals and especially, do not hunt them.

n our world we often think that it’s perfectly fine to make animals our dinner. Animal cruelty is a problem, in my opinion. Animals should be valued just like humans. I do understand that we must eat, but animals bring so much joy to my life, and I think the lives of others. I would like to see animals treated a little more kinder, and I think that would help make our world a better place. 7

id you know you can die from drugs? Drugs are bad for you, just like alcohol. Drugs can make you feel weird, act stupid, and say something bad. Many young people and teens die because of drugs. Some young people hide using drugs. They don’t let anyone find out,
you don’t stop smoking, you will get addicted. Here are some solutions: If you see or you know someone smoking, show them how it can hurt them and they will die. If they smoke around other people, others can get sick, too.
but when they die, people learn that he or she died from drugs. Drugs change your brain; sometimes people lie or commit crimes and end up in jail. If you see someone uses drugs, make sure you tell an adult. We need to educate them more about it, so they won’t use drugs or alcohol. We need to put cameras to check on young people. Everyone should be scared of drugs. www.KidsStandard.org

Tobacco Global Problem Solving By:Yuri Ishikawa, 3rd grade, Sheiko Elementary, West Bloomfield
I
think one of the big global problems is that some people like tobacco. When we use tobacco products, it makes our lungs, teeth, and skin yellow, and it smells bad. When I go to different places, some people are smoking tobacco. When I get near them, they smell stinky. Tobacco is very, very bad for your body. If you are doing tobacco, your teeth will turn to brown. Also, your lungs are usually red/pink, but if you are consuming tobacco, your lungs will turn black. Once, my second-grade teacher was sitting on a bench, when a man asked her to hold his tobacco while he went to the bathroom. So, she held it. After she gave it back to the man, she smelled badly and her fingers were stained. So tobacco can also make your skin stained. And it can harm people around you by breathing the smoke, because it can get in their lungs. One of the solutions is to teach kids that they should not use tobacco products even when they are 21 or older. Another way is to talk to a doctor and get medicine to quit smoking. Additionally, stores can add a lot of taxes so the buyers won’t be able to afford to buy tobacco. I really hope that people will stop smoking and learn that it is bad for their body.
One of the solutions is to teach kids that they should not use tobacco products even when they are 21 or older.

Solutions for Natural Disasters By: Kamy Shushtari, 4th grade, Springfield Plains Elementary, Clarkston

here are many natural disasters that are damaging people’s houses and their belongings. Types of natural disasters include tornadoes, hurricanes, and erupting volcanoes. Tornadoes and erupting volcanoes are damaging towns and countries. Tornado is a destructive rotating wind that looks like a funnel-shaped cloud. They are making people flee away from their houses. Tornadoes are very bad because they destroy anything in their path. People should be aware of their

surroundings, and they have to go to the basement and put metal on the walls and ceiling. Also, they have to keep away from windows. You go to the basement, because when the tornado comes to your house and destroys the top of the house, you can be safe in the basement. Hurricanes destroy things near them. The hurricanes are made of water swirling upward. That’s why they don’t come on land like a tornado does. The hurricanes are in the water, and their winds are so strong that they can tear a roof off. Therefore, when you see a hurricane coming your way, you should leave the area. Volcanoes are formed near the
ocean and are called the ring of fire. Erupting volcanoes are destroying anything until they cool off. But the erupting volcanoes can make new islands that people don’t know. Volcanoes are stuck to the ground. Even if there is a crack in the ground, lava comes from it. You need to keep away from lava and have a backup plan if the first plan fails. These are all ways how you can survive these natural disasters. For the tornadoes, go downstairs and keep away from windows; for hurricanes, fill in the crack in your door; for erupting volcanoes, have a plan and a backup plan where to go.

lood happens when water from the rain cannot drain. This causes a lot of damage. Cars, people, animals can get stuck in water, and then they can die. People and animals who can’t swim, can drown. When the water goes inside people’s homes, everything gets soaked and often destroyed. We can stop floods by making walls. People can help others in flood by giving money, food, and clothes. If we make tall homes, people can live on the second floor and it can help them stay safe.

BANANA PROBLEM By: Andrew Bidinger, 12th grade, Clarkston High School
The saying goes, Life is like a box of chocolates. But the saying should be, Life is like a bunch of bananas. You may be thinking you’re crazy, Well I am but think about it. lectronic devices can be good if they are used for good uses, but they can be detrimental if they are used too much! For example, playing video games a lot can damage your eyes, but it also helps with the hand-eye coordination. Cell phones are good when we need to talk for emergency, but texting while you are driving can kill you. I think there should be a law or time limit for how much electronics we can use.

SOCIAL ISSUES
A Well-Fed World By: Kiyan Shushtari, 4th grade, Springfield Plains Elementary, Clarkston
I
n our world every day people starve from hunger. Yet, oftentimes we waste food, like when we go out to eat and order more food than we can finish. Even if people have food, it doesn’t mean that they have good food; the food could be not clean or grown the wrong way. This can cause problems in our world, but I believe there are some solutions to these problems. World hunger is a major problem on our planet, but we often just act like nothing’s wrong and we do not do
anything. There are a lot of countries in our world that suffer from a lack of resources and do not have enough food. Lack of food can eventually kill or make people really unhealthy and have a high risk of death. We can help by donating to the starving instead of wasting food that can be used. Hunger is not the only problem; people might not grow the food the right way or they don’t have clean water to clean fruit or veggies. When there is no clean water, you can’t eat the food, and with no good food, the result is starvation. This is not hard to fix; we only have to increase food quality. It won’t just save our lives; it will save others from food poisoning and death. As you can see, hunger and a lack of clean food are horrible things that cause death and unhealthiness. It is possible to fix this, but we don’t do anything. What can you do to help?

y world problem is racism because it is still very much alive, even in the United States. One time we went to get my haircut at a new hair salon. As the stylist was working on my hair, I overheard some of the workers talking about “colored “ people. As a Hispanic American, I was offended that in this world people still made those kinds of comments about people and think this was okay. We should all be treated and judged the same and respected by all. I am sad this kind of behavior still exist in this world. DECEMBER 2019

The Michigan Youth Project, one of Kids Standard’s Newest Programs, which was launched in 2019 in partnership with Pontiac Schools. After our success in Pontiac, we received multiple requests to expand the program in other neighboring schools. It is, therefore, we invite additional students from Middle Schools in Oakland County to participate in this project the 2019-2020 school year. Since Oakland County Bicentennial is coming up next year, our project for the past can fit well right there. Through research and civic engagement, participating students strengthen many other important skills as they learn about the history of Oakland County for the past 200 years. We work hard all year to help students be their best and encourage them to share what they learn with the community so that the whole community can also grow with them. We hold an annual final presentation showcase in May for the students to share their work and compete for various awards and prizes.
For those Schools and Students intersted to join us please contact Board@kidsstandard.org or contact Maggie at 248-410-3976

PROJECTS

n 2020, Oakland County will celebrate its bicentennial. In honor of this historic milestone, Kids Standard is launching The Competition for Bicentennial! This competition is open to Oakland Schools middle school students, and it encourages teams of 5-7 students to explore the county’s history and develop insightful multimedia presentations for their peers. Competing teams will present their projects at a showcase in March 2020, and compete for individual and team prizes. Here’s how the competition works: Student teams, led by a teacher advisor, will be asked to explore one aspect of the county’s history – like the Arts, Education, Health, Industries, Agriculture, Government and Commerce. After thoroughly researching the topic, interviewing experts, and synthesizing their findings, teams will then develop presentations that bring the history to life. Many different types of presentations will be accepted, including documentary films, theatrical performances, multimedia presentations, and spoken word presentations. To participate in the Competition for Bicentennial: • Teachers form teams of 5 to 7 students in Oakland-area middle schools; multiple teams can participate from the same school. • Teams conduct research on one aspect of the county’s history. Detailed project guidelines are provided as teams enter. • Teams present their projects to
DECEMBER 2019
their peers during class- or schoolwide presentations. • Teams present their projects at the final awards showcase in March 2020, where individual and team prizes will be awarded. This cross-curricular project requires students to demonstrate a variety of skills, including English Language Arts, Social Studies,
Public Speaking and Technology, while fostering interpersonal skills, self-confidence and friendly competition. In addition, the competition is aligned with Oakland Schools Social Studies and History curricular. Global problems skills required to succeed in the modern society.
Maggie Razdar Publisher/Founder Have you ever felt an urgency to make a positive impact on the world but not known where to start? There are challenges that we face as global citizens. Sometimes, there seems to be too many of them – from climate change, to gender inequality, to medical care, to racism, to poverty and drug abuse. From my point of view, it all comes down to education. We can solve almost every problem in the world through education. No, a college degree isn’t enough. I am talking about the authentic education: researching and learning on your own and teaching others. It’s truly heartwarming to hear the concerns that the kids bring up. For the most part, these kids are right on target when it comes to understanding the global issues. Many of them want to grow up to solve some of the problems. Number one problem is world hunger and poverty. Child health and education go handin-hand. Malnutrition leads to permanent physiological damage. Children who are chronically hungry develop cognitive difficulties, which means they might never be able to achieve their academic or professional potential. Even when children are attending school, the quality of their education might be poor, or educational capacity and resources may be limited. This means that they might leave school without the literacy 22

The next issue is gender inequality. Although women make up approximately half of the population, historically, there have been social walls to economic and personal independence for women. While much has been done to improve this, there is still quite a way to go. Again, it comes down to education. Children of educated mothers are also less likely to be malnourished and more likely to survive past the age of five. But it is not simply a lack of access to education and financial resources that plagues women: rates of sexual violence against women remain high. The next major global issue is environmental. Environmental issues encompass all threats to habitats and organisms on land and underwater, as well as resource depletion. Most of our planet is covered in water. We depend on the oceans to maintain our rainwater system, and many people rely on it for food and income. Oceans also absorb carbon dioxide and produce about 30 percent of our oxygen. But despite its importance, the ocean is under threat. Overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices are causing endangerment and extinction of many marine species. An increase in pollutants in air or water contributes to the global warming. Certain global issues cannot be solved by on-the-ground, grassroots-style projects. They require upholding of international law and peace, assisting with decolonization of nations, and ensuring the effective running of democracies. These are activities that such regulatory organizations as the United Nations oversee daily. However, there is a number of policylevel issues on which we all can work. The first issue is human rights - the unalienable rights of all people around the world. At Kids Standard, we are
contributing to solving this issue through many of our programs. We are teaching children human rights through Michigan Youth Project. We are addressing them in our after-school Multimedia Expression clubs and in every issue of our magazine. We are showcasing these ideas through students’ writing and illustrations. Our women empowerment projects around the world provide resources to support women as they learn more about their own rights. Climate change is another problem that can be most effectively solved through policy change as most fossil fuel emissions are produced by factories and cars. However, our way to address this issue is by educating communities about the importance of protecting local environment. These communities might, at a later stage, be compelled to select their leaders based on their effective environmental policies. Take action! Now it’s up to you to choose. You now know for which global issues you care, so choose the cause that touches you. Rather than reading and hearing about it in the news, be part of the Kids Standard’s problem-solving team. When you are working on something that you are passionate about, you are more likely to stick with it and put effort into the project, resulting in a more fulfilling experience for you and a greater impact on the Earth. Contact me to join our team: Maggie@kidsstandard.org Thank you! On behalf of our Kids’ Standard team, I am wishing you and your loved ones Happy Holidays! May this season be filled with Love, Joy, Health, and Prosperity! -
