IF YOU'RE AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY YOU ALREADY BELIEVE IN BEING VEGAN. r for the animals r for the planet r for our healh
WHAT IF WE CARED FOR ALL ANIMALS THE WAY WE CARE FOR PETS? Our culture has lead us to believe that some animals such as dogs and cats deserve care, protection and friendship whilst others such as pigs, cows, chickens or lambs are merely dinner ingredients. All animals that are bred for slaughter experience what you would in the same circumstances ~ suffering, fear, terror, pain and the desire to live. DAIRY Each year in NZ around 2 million babies are slaughtered from age 4 days-a few months – so that their mothers’ milk can be consumed by humans. [1]
PIGS One of the cleverest animals, pigs are loving and inquisitive. Nursing sows kept in crates that they cannot move in for up to months, prior to slaughter. [1]
EGGS Chickens have distinct personalities. Male chicks have no commercial value and while alive are routinely gassed or macerated (ground up.)[3
CHICKENS Most spend their lives imprisoned. They are bred to grow so unnaturally large that their organs fail and their legs cannot support them.[1]

ANIMAL AGRICULTURE
91% of Earth’s deforestation is due to animal agriculture. [4]
Dominion | Earthlings | Live and Let Live | peta.org.au | Speciesism
THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE INDUSTRY ON THE PLANET. Farm animals consume way more food than they produce. Livestock cover 45% of the Earth’s total land. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution and habitat destruction. About 1/3 of the planet’s drinkable water goes to animal crops. [5] 1 burger = 2498L water 1 litre of milk = 628L water 1 egg = 200 litres water
FISHLESS OCEANS The health of the ocean is crucial to our survival. Over 300,00 whales and dolphins are killed as a result of ‘bi-catch’ each year. We are heading towards fishless oceans by 2048 [7][8]

G OUT When eating out check the menu for vegan options and check again FOR EATIN S P I T N A VEG when ordering. There seems to be confusion and discrepancies with eateries using V or VG or something else to differentiate vegan from vegetarian. Always ask as we’ve found many restaurants have a vegan menu tucked away but don’t offer it unless requested! If you can’t find anything, ask staff for advice as often a vegetarian dish can be made vegan.

PROPERLY DONE A WHOLE FOOD, PLANT-BASED DIET IS THE HEALTHIEST WAY YOU CAN EAT. [9] We now know that not only do we not need animals and their secretions to survive and thrive, but that they are detrimental to our health.[10] World Health Organisation (WHO) classifies processed meat as a Type 1 carcinogen and other meat as Type 2. [11] Canada has removed dairy from their healthy food pyramid. [12] Professional atheletes have stated that since becoming vegan their performance has improved, they have reduced their recovery time and credit their new world records to the power of their food. The largest body of nutrition professionals in the world, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, states, ‘wellplanned vegan diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of life, including pregnancy, infancy, childhood and for athletes..[13]
