The Kangaroo

There are more kangaroos than humans in Australia! Kangaroos are marsupial animals (pouched mammals) found in Australia, Tasmania and also New Guinea.

Some kangaroos can outrun a racehorse - they can reach over 65km/h! Kangaroos are the only large animal to use hopping as their primary method of motion. In one hop, they can travel 7.6 meters!

The red kangaroo is the largest. They can grow up to 2 meters and can jump 3 meters high. Some kangaroos can jump three times their own height.

Did you know, Kangaroos CAN'T walk backwards but they CAN swim?

In the event of an attack, they often head to water and will try and drown their predator - but then they are faced with deadly crocodiles!

Wild dogs (dingoes) and feral cats will prey on kangaroos. The four most common species of kangaroo are the red kangaroo, antilopine kangaroo, eastern grey kangaroo and western grey kangaroo.

When a kangaroo feels threatened, it will pound its feet on the ground and kick.

On land, they only ever move their hind legs together. In water, they kick each hind leg independently.

Heat, drought and hunger are also threats to kangaroos although they need very little water to survive. Most of their fluids come from their diet and they can survive for months without water.

They may look cute but their powerful hind legs make them very dangerous - and they have long sharp toe nails! They can bite too! Most kangaroos eat grass, shoots and shrubs. They use their tails for balance and steering.

They are social animals usually staying in groups of at least 3 or 4. Some groups are made up of as many as 100 individuals.

They hunt for food during the night and rest in the shade during the day. The Australian airline Qantas has a kangaroo as its logo. Kangaroos are the national symbol of Australia and also appear on postage stamps and coins.

A female is known as a 'doe'. A male is a 'buck'. Baby kangaroos are known as 'joeys'.

Their babies are born very early (the equivalent of the seventh week of a human pregnancy). They travel from the birth canal when only the size of a bean, by blindly climbing through the mother's fur until they reach the pouch. They then spend at least 4 months developing in the pouch and will stay there until around 10 months old.

Kangaroo meat is one of the healthiest meats you can find being high in protein and low in fat. The sale of kangaroo meat was only legalized in Australia in 1993 but is now an important export industry, exporting to over 50 countries worldwide. Females can carry two joeys at the same time but they will be born a year apart.

Young kangaroos will jump headfirst into their mother's pouch when frightened.

A female kangaroo can determine the sex of her offspring and can delay gestation if she feels environmental factors may be detrimental to her joey.

A group of kangaroos is called a 'mob', a 'troop' or a 'court'. They have excellent eyesight but only when an object is moving!

They have excellent hearing and can move their ears in different directions without moving their head.

They usually live for between 9 and 22 years in the wild, depending on their habitat.
