PORTFOLIO | 2020
2020
As an architect, I strive to uphold an oath to the community: to be adamant, dedicated, and most of all honest with colleagues and clients about the work I do. Every day I spend in this profession I will commit to learning and improving in every aspect of the field. This portfolio is a composition of work from both my professional career and as a student pursuing my Masters and Undergraduate degrees. They are the result of the many hours I have spent studying and exploring the myriad faces of architectural design. Thank you, Kiel J Fahnstrom

As a Project Architect, responsibilities include project management, intern-staff mentor ship and teaching of professional procedure, software, and architectural drafting standards and details. While working closely with the project managers and partnership of a team, my time was also utilized to business development, design, client interaction, and consultant coordination, & manage staff for document procurement. As an associate of the Interior Architecture team, I have had the pleasure to work on a vast variety of projects that vary in scale, program, and cultural diversity. Responsibilities include preliminary concept design, project presentations, design documentation, and construction documentation, interior architectural renderings, and Finishes, Fixtures, & Equipment procurement.
Under the direct teaching of Professor Rick Strand, my position as Teaching Assistant gave to me the opportunity to work with 24 students per semester. Each TA was tasked with holding one review session per week to help guide students through homework assignments and exam preparation.
Working under the direction of Lowell Miller, the Manager of the Illinois School of Architecture Fabrication Wood Shop, I was required to have proper training of tools and safety protocol. All employees were asked to also maintain cleanliness and assist other students with fabrication techniques to help make their projects successful. Under the direct supervision of Walter J. Hainsfurther, FAIA, we worked closely with various clients over the three years of Internship. In this time I was able to complete 2 stand alone structures, 37 interior build-outs, and 5 gas stations; this has enabled me to complete over 5,700 of NCARB Intern Development Program.

932 - The Whitney Chicago, IL
Design Team | OKW Architects, IMEG, ECL In August of 2019, L3 Capital purchased an existing 5/3 bank branch that enjoyed a very conservative semi-Georgian influenced architecture. Originally built in 2001 and located in the heart of Chicago’s hot Fulton Market neighborhood, the reimagined concept, which will re-use the building’s existing core, will provide space for 3 - 4 retail tenants on the ground level and 2 levels of office tenants above. OKW Architects’ design team explored 3 design variations to articulate the direction of the project’s look and feel. The client decided to move forward with an elegant combination of old and new, paying tribute to the neighborhood’s historic roots, yet rich in contemporary detailing.

Chicago Architecture Center Chicago, IL
Design Team | AS+GG, Gallagher & Assoc., DDG, WSP, Morlights Formerly known as the Chicago Architecture Foundation, this Chicago cultural institution was looking for an opportunity to grow and expand. By moving from their previous home at the historic Railway Exchange Building to the modernist Illinois Center, they made a statement about their vision for the future. With the goal of amplifying their brand and reach, AS+GG led the 35,000 SF interior renovation and adaptive reuse project, which included the expansion of guest services, a dedicated exhibit space for the CAF’s expanded model of Chicago, additional retail services, a new Skyscraper exhibit, and much more. In addition to their programming, the space itself is a nod to the city’s rich architectural heritage, shown in the exposure of the existing waffle slab structure and the dramatic, 40-foot open atrium. Upon opening in August of 2018, Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin called the new institution “the latest jewel in Chicago’s architectural crown.”

Toronto, ON, Canada Design Team | AS+GG Located in the Central Business District of Toronto, 160 Front Street is a new 46-story office tower anchored by TD Bank. The AS+GG Interior Architecture team’s scope included design of the lobby, elevator lobbies, amenity spaces, and office test fits. The ground floor lobby was designed to celebrate the unique typology of the facade, a tapering saw-tooth curtain wall system. The lobby core consisted of a convex white stone saw-tooth construction with polished stainless-steel trim at each corner. A black stone floor with steel inlay connects the exterior curtain wall system to the convex lobby core. To activate the lobby core, our team explored various feature wall concepts including a live wall, interactive LED screen, and mirror polished stainless steel.Â

Steppenwolf Theater Chicago, IL
Design Team | AS+GG Within the new addition of the Steppenwolf Theater, the AS+GG Interior Architecture team was tasked with coordination, material selection, and the overall enhancement of the theater experience. Through multiple iterations, the team explored various materials to express the glass fiber reinforced concrete surrounding the “theater in the round.” The team was able to elevate the Steppenwolf’s already rich experience by using multiple layers, screening, and lighting.

Point of Sale - Counter Evolution
Since the opening of Protein Bar; Matt Matros, Founder & Former CEO and I collaborated, researching and experimenting with the customers experience: is from the queuing line to their purchase is made, and where/how to receive their meal. These research based experiments resulted positively as the brand began to grow with popularity. The end resulted in a much fast food prep and delivery to each customer, also a clearly defined designated ares for customers. Conceptual Fabrication MECHANICAL ROOM

As Protein Bar has expanded, they have continued to study how their clients interact at the point of sale counter and transition to the food pick up. In the latest counter design, we wanted to add flair to this new dynamic food ordering and pick up counter. Through various concepts found on the following page, the most unique design that was approved for production and provided the cheapest solution. QUEUEING AREA 102
POS Counter - 3rd Generation
As Protein Bar expanded into their 3rd market, Boulder/Denver Colorado; Mr. Matros wanted to make an impact with the first location in Boulder, CO. As Mr. Matros and I were studying how clients could receive their order faster we developed the 3rd generation service counter. With this new design I found that with the taller wall behind the point of sale (POS) ‘pod’, it provided another opportunity to bring another unique element to ‘trendy’ Protein Bar style.

Graduate Awards for Design Excellence | 1ST PLACE Design Team | Jake Eble, Kiel Fahnstrom, Michael Sandrzyk Pinnacle is a product of structural expressionism which has been the premiere characteristic of Chicago’s architecture and urban fabric. The form was derived from the characteristics of Chicago’s revolutionary park-planning strategy known as the emerald necklace. The amenity spaces are defined through the process of linking grandiose public spaces with smaller connecting elements. The false spiraling tower ascends into the sky among the Chicago skyline, rising to a maximum height of 1,400 feet. The podium contains a multitude of various programs that cascade from water street and Columbus drive down to the developing northern Chicago Riverwalk, connecting to the Magnificent Mile. Walking through a sliver of crystal glass that cuts through the north and south facade is energized by a variety of program elements. From a restaurant brewery to various levels of art/sculpture lounging areas. And the hotel lobby, that overlooks the cascading stairs, provoking curiosity.

Japanese Cultural Center University of Illinois, 2016
“Over 120 Japanese companies have operations in the Midwest, primarily the Detroit Area with an additional 80 companies having a presence in Michigan.” Given the dispersal of Japanese automotive operations throughout the Midwest, the leaders would like to leave a legacy of Japanese culture and education influence through the design of a cultural center/ institute. The Cultural Center located in a notable Detroit area institution renowned for design sensitivity such as Saarinen’s design of The Cranbrook Academy, a major academic institution where there is a long record of engagement of Japanese cultural influence. The Cultural Center offers an environment for maintaining a link to the Japanese homeland. The center is recognized as an institution for scholarship engaging Japanese culture within Cranbrook’s landscape.

Parabolic Prototype | 1 University of Illinois, 2016
This project was not only a test of personal strength and fabrication technique, it also was a testament to my grandfather who is a very successful designer and a huge influence in my life and career. Conventional or even modern furniture design was out of the question, this project became a question of possibilities. Through research techniques and precedents studies of designer and craftsman, Jeff Miller. I was able to fabricate a form that is provocative and unique With the blended use of Walnut and Jatoba to display a vibrant contrast of deep colored woods and through the process of cold bent lamination.

Lower School
Lower School is where children thrive on a rich, challenging curriculum delivered by compassionate teachers in an intimate classroom setting. Our teachers pay close attention to each individual’s needs and learning styles, and take special care to reach out to the whole being of every child--exercising their senses, their hearts, their imaginations, their bodies and all their diverse intelligences.
A New School Vision 2011
Design Team | John M. Stevens; Kiel Fahnstrom; Kelly Gawinek; Steve Adams; Holly Gurwell; Chris Strayer The school is comprised of 3 interconnected, yet distinct components that despite the overall size and complexity of the project help to provide for a habitable human scale. The ‘Main Street circulation spine runs along what once was 19th Street. It concentrates and directs movement of the students. Enclosing this allows for the connectivity that bridges all three schools to each other. The school contains three unique levels; Lower, Middle, and Upper schools. They are tied together through an undulating green roof system that submerges the schools beneath landscape; bringing together sustainable/natural building components to the school.
Middle School
Ground Level Plan
Middle School students can anticipate interesting and challenging years ahead. In grades 7 and 8 are introduced to a curriculum that is based on four values, or touchstones: participation, kindness, respect and responsibility. These maturing students develop their leadership and team-building skills beyond the classroom through participation in student government, sports, community service projects and after-school clubs.
High School
Central Cleveland, Ohio, 2011
Second Level Plan
Upper School academics focus on preparing and challenging our students to reach their full potential. Specialty courses like environmental science, fine arts, anthropology, and digital media complement more traditional courses, including advanced math, science, history, and English. Maumee Valley students also have opportunities to engage in college level coursework through Advanced Placement and Honors courses.
