GRADUATE AWARDS FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE 1ST PLACE Design Team: Jake Eble, Kiel Fahnstrom, Michael Sandrzyk Pinnacle is a product of structural expressionism which has been the premiere characteristic of Chicago’s architecture and urban fabric. The form was derived from the characteristics of Chicago’s revolutionary park-planning strategy known as the emerald necklace. The amenity spaces are defined through the process of linking grandiose public spaces with smaller connecting elements. The false spiraling tower ascends into the sky among the Chicago skyline, rising to a maximum height of 1,400 feet. The podium contains a multitude of various programs that cascade from water street and Columbus drive down to the developing northern Chicago Riverwalk, connecting to the Magnificent Mile. Walking through a sliver of crystal glass that cuts through the north and south facade is energized by a variety of program elements. From a restaurant brewery to various levels of art/sculpture lounging areas. And the hotel lobby, that overlooks the cascading stairs, provoking curiosity.

Parabolic Prototype - 1 University of Illinois, 2016

This project was not only a test of personal strength and fabrication technique, it also was a testament to my grandfather who is a very successful designer and a huge influence in my life and career. Conventional or even modern furniture design was out of the question, this project became a question of possibilities. Through research techniques and precedents studies of designer and craftsman, Jeff Miller. I was able to fabricate a form that is provocative and unique With the blended use of Walnut and Jatoba to display a vibrant contrast of deep colored woods and through the process of cold bent lamination.

The Age of Digital Reproduction University of Illinois, 2016

The premise of the project was to research architectural design through drawings; followed by producing an artifact that embodies characteristics of the design. The artifact itself was to fit within the constraints of a 12”x 9”x 1.5” box made only of chipboard. After selecting the ‘author’ Joshua G. Stein, I selected his proposed project “Inversion Sky” for the El Paso City Hall. The project of study embodied prescriptive views through openings and permeability. As a result, this project developed into a perspective study of light, space, and shadow variation.

“Over 120 Japanese companies have operations in the Midwest, primarily the Detroit Area with an additional 80 companies having a presence in Michigan.” Given the dispersal of Japanese automotive operations throughout the Midwest, the leaders would like to leave a legacy of Japanese culture and education influence through the design of a cultural center/ institute. The Japan Center located in a notable Detroit area institution renowned for design sensitivity such as Saarinen’s Cranbrook Academy, a major academic institution where there is a long record of engagement of Japanese influence. The Japan Cultural Center offers an environment for maintaining a cultural link to the Japanese homeland. The center is recognized as an institution for scholarship engaging Japanese culture within Cranbrook’ s landscape.

Volterra: “The Gates of Volterra” University of Illinois, 2016

Design Team: Aarefa Palgharwala, Alina Grabiec, Brandon Clark, Kiel Fahnstrom

“The Gates of Volterra,” the objective of the project is to compose a contemporary re-interpretation of the historical city gates in the urban context. The program focuses on the place defined by the gate itself, as well as the urban space immediately in front and behind it. In partnership with Alina, Aarefa , Brandon, and Professor Jan Slyk, our team was given Potra Selci. We chose to approach the gate as it is, a gate and there is nothing that a contemporary design can do to enhance it; in short the problem was with the Urban Scale. As vivacious and energetic as the area surround the gate is, there was no easy for anyone to get around, including handicap accessibility.

Toledo Urban Re-Development

o

Bowling Green State University, 2011

Design Team: Benjamin Birkey, Kiel Fahnstrom. Ronald Riddle, Katie Yinger

The City of Toledo, OH is one of America’s many decaying port cities. Currently the city expresses a major disconnect by the Maumee River, creating a segregation barrier between the Downtown and East Toledo. By breaking the barrier created by the Maumee River; CONNECTIVITY, SUSTAINABILITY, and ENTERTAINMENT, were found to be the three prominent characteristics that Toledo, OH lacks. This project offers dynamic and interactive islands to draw the residents and visitors into the waterfront within the Downtown of Toledo. These islands disrupt the disconnect between Downtown and East Toledo, offering attractions that the Glass City has not encountered in many years.

Protein Bar Restaurants Point of Sale - Counter Evolution Since the opening of Protein Bar; Matt Matros, Founder & Former CEO and I collaborated, researching and experimenting with the customers experience: is from the queuing line to their purchase is made, and where/how to receive their meal. These research based experiments resulted positively as the brand began to grow with popularity. The end resulted in a much fast food prep and delivery to each customer, also a clearly defined designated ares for customers.

Protein Bar Restaurants POS Counter - 3rd Generation As Protein Bar expanded into their 3rd market, Boulder/Denver Colorado; Mr. Matros wanted to make an impact with the first location in Boulder, CO. As Mr. Matros and I were studying how clients could receive their order faster we developed the 3rd generation service counter. With this new design I found that with the taller wall behind the point of sale (POS) ‘pod’, it provided another opportunity to bring another unique element to ‘trendy’ Protein Bar style. K U RT Z

Protein Bar Restaurants Conceptual Fabrication Design As Protein Bar has expanded, they have continued to study how their clients interact at the point of sale counter and transition to the food pick up. In the latest counter design, we wanted to add flair to this new dynamic food ordering and pick up counter. Through various concepts found on the following page, the most unique design that was approved for production and provided the cheapest solution. The Protein Bar logo was asked to be extruded 3 dimensionally with LED back-lighting. Along with 3 nominal sizes and custom patterns per store, Protein Bar would be able to add this feature as a small extra to construction costs’. After further time and development, only one prototype was put into production and not continued due to construction costs.

Conceptual Renderings On the northern part of the site, we propose constructing quick service restaurant with a drive-thru window and 15 seats. The drive-thru window will be located on the east side of the building. This places all transactions toward the street and away from neighboring property. We have commissioned a traffic study, which we are coordinating closely with City staff. The restaurant building will be faced in fiber cement panels and EIFS. It will have storefront along the west elevation where the main entrance is located. As of November, 2012 Dunkin’ Brands released their latest store design referred to as, “Fresh Brew”. The idea of the new design was to ensure band congruence while ensuring relevance and impact on an international scale. The “Fresh Brew” design provides a distinct identity without the use of signage on the exterior, and providing a warm, welcoming, and warm gathering environment within.

Design Team: John M. Stevens; Kiel Fahnstrom; Kelly Gawinek; Steve Adams; Holly Gurwell; Chris Strayer

The school is comprised of 3 interconnected, yet distinct components that despite the overall size and complexity of the project help to provide for a habitable human scale. The ‘Main Street circulation spine runs along what once was 19th Street. It concentrates and directs movement of the students. Enclosing this allows for the connectivity that bridges all three schools to each other. The school contains three unique levels; Lower, Middle, and Upper schools. They are tied together through an undulating green roof system that submerges the schools beneath landscape; bringing together sustainable/natural building components to the school.

Middle School

Middle School students can anticipate interesting and challenging years ahead. In grades 7 and 8 are introduced to a curriculum that is based on four values, or touchstones: participation, kindness, respect and responsibility. These maturing students develop their leadership and team-building skills beyond the classroom through participation in student government, sports, community service projects and after-school clubs.

1

Lower School

Lower School is where children thrive on a rich, challenging curriculum delivered by compassionate teachers in an intimate classroom setting. Our teachers pay close attention to each individual’s needs and learning styles, and take special care to reach out to the whole being of every child--exercising their senses, their hearts, their imaginations, their bodies and all their diverse intelligences.

2

High School

Upper School academics focus on preparing and challenging our students to reach their full potential. Specialty courses like environmental science, fine arts, anthropology, and digital media complement more traditional courses, including advanced math, science, history, and English. Maumee Valley students also have opportunities to engage in college level coursework through Advanced Placement and Honors courses.
