BIG WINNERS Leonardo DiCaprio was king of the world again, named Best Actor in a drama for The Revenant, which also snared the top movie prize. “People are talking about it for good reason,” he said of the film’s infamous bear-attack scene. BEST DRESSED THESE 8 STYLE STARS WERE WINNERS FROM THE MINUTE THEY HIT THE RED CARPET

Jenna Dewan Tatum

The celestial sequin embellishments and deep V on the actress’s Zuhair Murad Couture gown (paired with Lorraine Schwartz jewels) made for the perfect out-of-thisworld look.

Jennifer Lawrence

The award for most creative cutouts goes to...this silk Dior Haute Couture! The Best Actress winner paired the bold column gown with dazzling jewels by Chopard, including a 157carat collar necklace.

Julianne Moore

“You don’t have to show skin to be sexy,” says stylist Leslie Fremar of the custom sapphire Tom Ford gown she styled with Chopard jewels. The asymmetrical neckline is a “modern twist on a choker, but it’s all connected.”

Kirsten Dunst

The star’s velvet Valentino Haute Couture gown, teamed with Fred Leighton 19th-century jewels, mixed demure (those dainty shoulder ruffles) with daring (that eyepopping neckline!).

Jennifer Lopez

This Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown “was so different than anything I’ve ever done,” the star said. But the rest was classic J.Lo: She wore over 200 carats of Harry Winston diamonds, plus a Judith Leiber crystal clutch.

Olivia Wilde

The unique Imperial Roman coins on Wilde’s stunning Bulgari necklace complemented her custom wine-colored Michael Kors Collection gown, which was covered with more than 3,000 hand-sewn sequins.

Brie Larson

The Best Actress winner’s Calvin Klein Collection design was sculpted to the star’s body. “I feel protected, like I’m in a hug, like I have Joan of Arc armor on,” she said. Tiffany & Co. jewels completed the look.

Gina Rodriguez

No one loved the cinched-waist on this Zac Posen gown (paired with Neil Lane jewels) more than the actress herself. “I didn’t really have to lose any weight or do anything for it because everything’s hidden underneath the dress!” she says.

To kick off awards season, Best Actress nominee Ronan, 21, and her stylist Elizabeth Saltzman wanted a look that felt like a “fresh start.” Enter this ivory goddess gown. “For a while we loved print, color and a bit of whimsy,” says Saltzman. But this design felt “cool,” she explains. “This is the first time that she’s worn this type of gown. It was just simple and not trying too hard.” And how did Ronan feel about her streamlined style? “She loved it. She was happy.”

For her first trip to the Globes, the superstar enlisted top Hollywood stylist Leslie Fremar, who works with Reese Witherspoon, to find the perfect dress. “I think she was looking to do something different,” says Fremar, who had only about five days to wrangle this custom Prada. It was simple by the singer’s standards, but it did have a Perry-esque touch in the form of a playful bow. “Even though the front’s so sexy, the back makes it feel a little sweet,” says Fremar.

INSIDE HIS FIRST DAYS AT SCHOOL! BY SIMON PERRY

THERE WERE NO TEARS, NO PLEAS TO STAY HOME and hardly a backward glance at Mom and Dad. When 2-year-old Prince George started preschool on Jan. 6, he did so with the confidence of a king-intraining. Speaking with well-wishers outside a church service on Jan. 10, Princess Kate shared her pride. “She said he went off to school bravely as

anything and thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Arthur Coxon, a retired Royal Navy lieutenant commander who attended a military ceremony alongside the royals near the church. Adds a Palace source: “The first day went well.” The milestone was the biggest one yet for George, who is enrolled at Westacre Montessori PEOPLE January 25, 2016

Cancer has had a huge impact on me personally, having lost my husband, Jay, in 1998 from colon cancer and my sister Emily two years later from pancreatic cancer. I think the most powerless feeling you have is not being able to help someone you love conquer this disease. After I lost Jay and Emily, I felt that I had an extraordinary platform from which I could educate people and create awareness and raise money to help find a cure for this insidious and cruel disease. With Stand Up to Cancer’s fund-raising efforts, more than $360 million has been pledged to research. Cancer rips people away from the lives that they could have had. Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis square off in a game of cat and mouse and money DRAMA Robustly entertaining, Billions joins the company of hot-button movies like The Wolf of Wall Street, The Big Short and 99 Homes. These form a genre that could be called market porn: Who can resist a story about high-living, fast-hustle financiers, enormous monetary stakes and colossal reversals of fortune? Billions— about the meticulously planned war waged by a U.S. attorney against a hedge-fund giant—has brilliantly cast two powerfully contrasting actors. Giamatti, the law’s man, is so uncompromising in his crabbed, splenetic intensity he’s oddly appealing. Oct. 31, 2005 Freelance photographer Teresa Halbach, wearing blue jeans, a white button-down shirt and a jacket, leaves the home she shares with roommate Scott Bloedorn. She has three appointments to photograph vehicles for sale for Auto Trader magazine. The Avery Auto Salvage yard is her last stop of the day. A school bus driver says she sees Teresa taking pictures on the property around 3:30 p.m.

Nov. 3, 2005 Teresa’s parents, Tom and Karen Halbach, report Teresa missing. Her ex-boyfriend Ryan Hillegas and roommate Bloedorn help organize a search party of volunteers scouring the area.

says the show raises doubts only for outsiders: “We hope Steven doesn’t get out because of this. Those of us who live here know that he’s guilty.” Filmmakers Demos and Ricciardi, who moved to Wisconsin and worked 10 years on the film, say their only agenda “was just to get people talking.” That agenda seems to have been met: More than 500,000 people have signed online petitions demanding pardons for Avery and Dassey, now 26. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says he has a policy against pardons; the White House notes that President Obama has no authority over state cases. But the attention has won Avery, who maintains his innocenceand has been filing his own appeals since running out of money, two new lawyers: TriciaBushnelloftheWisconsinInnocence Project and Kathleen Zellner, who specializes in wrongful convictions. To this day Teresa’s mother doesn’t talk publicly about her daughter’s death. “Karen has been through a lot,” says Teresa’s aunt Carol Stumpf. “She is a strong woman, andbelievinginGod...isprobably what helped her get through this.”

Strang and Buting are still defense attorneys and occasionally visit Avery in prison together. Both hope new evidence could come to light with the case back in the spotlight. Says Buting: “Some interesting information is surfacing.”

Allegations by Avery’s defense team that Colborn planted key evidence to frame Avery have not affected his job: He still works for the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department, as a lieutenant with the detective division.

Avery’s girlfriend at the time of his arrest, Stachowski was arrested in 2006 for writing bad checks, in 2007 for disorderly conduct and in 2009 for bail-jumping and driving while her license was revoked. She’s single and living in Appleton, Wis.

The retired lab worker began writing to Avery while he was in prison, and they became engaged. Now, though, the two are just friends. “A prison relationship is hard to maintain,” she says. Still, “I can’t see him as a guilty person.”

“Brendan never said she was killed in the house,” says Kratz, who was forced to resign as prosecutor in 2010 for sexting a crime victim (see above). “It’s alwaysbeenmytheorythatwhenBrendan said, ‘I cut her on the throat,’ I suspect Brendan did little more than a superficial cut.” But Richard Mahler, who was excused from Avery’s jury midway through deliberations because of a family emergency, insists, “The jury didn’t base their verdict on the evidence.” Says Mahler: “We had the father of a Manitowoc County sheriff’s deputy on the jury.”

And the legal battle continues. North-

western University’s Center on Wrong-

ful Convictions of Youth has taken Dassey’s case to federal court, arguing that investigators fed the boy facts and took advantage of his slow intellect. And Zellner, now on Avery’s case, says she intends to add him to her “long list of wrongful-conviction exonerations.” Already, new leads and “some interesting information is surfacing” thanks to the publicity, says Buting. It all buoys Avery, says his former fiancée Sandy Greenman, especially the messages of support from viewers of the docuseries. “Steven’s in a really good place,” she says. “It’s not just the [new] lawyer, it’s the people—it makes him smile.” Whatever legal maneuvers come, Teresa’s family appear determined to keep their focus on her memory. Sib-

lings, cousins, aunts and uncles all drive around Calumet County with “Live Life Like Teresa” bumper stickers. Come March 22 Teresa’s family will gather to mark what should have been her 36th birthday. Every year, says Stumpf, “they go out and celebrate for her.” And for those who were closest to Teresa, opinions about who killed her won’t bring her back. “Everyone watching the show is entitled to their opinions,” says Teresa’s college classmate Katie Uttech. “I just miss Teresa being around and not being able to make more memories together.” By Sandra Sobieraj Westfall and Tara Fowler. n many ways Julianna Snow is a typical 5-year-old girl. She loves princesses and Disney movies, her favorite color is pink, and she’d rather play than do just about anything else. “Julianna has a huge imagination,” says her mom, Michelle Moon, as she helps Julianna arrange the plastic figurines in her toy palace. “She always has some sort of drama going—like one person isn’t listening or they’re arguing,” she laughs. “I try to get them to reconcile, but she wants to keep it going.” But Julianna is no ordinary little girl. She’s terminally ill with a rare, aggressive form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT), a degenerative neuromuscular illness that has steadily robbed

her of her ability to walk, eat or even breathe on her own. Michelle, a neurologist, and her husband, Steve Snow, 38, an Air Force veteran (they also have a 7-year-old son, Alex), have tried everything to help her, including traveling from their home in Washougal, Wash., to Iowa to see Dr. Michael Shy, one of the world’s leading experts on CMT (cmtausa.org). “She has one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen,” says Shy, a neurologist at the University of Iowa. Last February, after a series of lengthy, torturous hospitalizations during which Julianna endured a regimen of painful treatments to clear her lungs of mucus, she and her mom began a series of extraordinary conversations about death. “Julianna made it clear to us that she does not want to

It wasn’t until cnn.com posted a two-part story about Julianna in October, with ethicists debating whether a 4-year-old child is capable of making such a lifeand-death decision, that her story made headlines across the world. Many wrote to Michelle offering support, but there was plenty of negative reaction as well. Perhaps most upsetting to Michelle was a new website from a group calling itself Dear Julianna, which featured photos of adults with neuromuscular diseases. “We wanted to show her and

The family moved to Washington to be closer to his parents after Michelle found a job nearby. By far the worst times during those years were the 66 days Julianna spent in the pediatric intensive care unit in 2014, a mask over her face and mouth, struggling to breathe. What shehatedmost were the sometimes hourly naso-tracheal (NT) suctioning treatments, where a nurse would insert a catheter through her nose to clear mucus from her lungs. “She would cry silently,” remembers Michelle. “She didn’t have the strength to fight.” After each hospital stay Julianna came home weaker than when she’d left. After her last, in October 2014, Michelle began talking to her about what they would do if she got sick again. “I’d say, ‘I know you hate going to the hospital, but isn’t that okay because you get better and can spend more time with us?’ ” recalls Michelle. “She would never answer. So last February I finally asked her: Me: Julianna, if you get sick again, do you want to go to the hospital again or stay home? J: Not the hospital. M: Even if that means that you will go to heaven if you stay home? J: Yes. M: And you know that Mommy and Daddy won’t come with you right away? You’ll go by yourself first.

Family Forever For Michelle and Steve, who married in 2006, caring for Julianna has strengthened their bond. “We’ve had to lean on each other, trust each other and communicate about things that break our heart,” says Michelle.

here’s no doubting Khloé Kardashian’s dedication. Take her workout routine, for example: She has regular spin classes, 7 a.m. “sweat sessions,” grueling stair hikes and frequent training sessions with Gunnar Peterson. Indeed, over the past two years the onetime self-described “fat sister” of the Kardashian family has found her groove in the gym. Coupled with revamped eating habits, her commitment to fitness has resulted not only in an enviably toned physique (she’s about 40 lbs. lighter), but in a clearer and calmer mind. “It really decompresses me,” the 31-year-old author of Strong Looks Better Naked told People of her newfound appreciation of fitness. “I’m less combative and I have less anxiety.” In October her new outlook was put to the test when personal tragedy struck: Kardashian’s estranged husband, Lamar Odom, 36, suffered a near-deadly drug overdose. Kardashian, still technically married and in charge of his medical decisions, flew to Odom’s side and didn’t leave the hospital for weeks. The solace and stability her physical routine provided was put on hold. “The gym had been my release, so mentally, that really took its toll,” she says. “But it wasn’t about me.” PEOPLE January 25, 2016

Now that Odom has stabilized (the former Lakers star was finally released from the hospital to a rehabilitation center this month), Kardashian is focused on the future. On Jan. 20 she’ll launch her new series Kocktails with Khloé on the FYI network, and she’s still seeing Houston Rockets star James Harden. (“We make it work,” she says of long-distance dating.) Kardashian says she’s also looking at the new year as an opportunity to get her fitness routine—and her personal life—back on track: “I definitely realized the physical and the mental go hand in hand.” Last year brought a painful and emotional situation. How did it affect you?

‘I’ve learned to take care of myself. Sometimes I have to give myself my own pep talk’

Was it hard getting back into your routine?

I needed to find my new normal and create that again. It was so hard to find that rhythm. I realized my stamina was affected. During running drills, I was so out of breath compared to how I normally was. But I knew that

THE UP &DOWNS Hard Work, Big Payoff “I feel the best I've ever felt, physically,” says Khloé (in 2015). “There is so much negativity; you have to find that release. I feel confident and more secure on my own two feet.”

Loving Life—at Any Size “Lamar never ever talked about my weight,” says Khloé (at their 2009 wedding, and right, in a sexy photo shoot for her husband, nicknamed Candy Man, in 2010). “Lamar loved me for who I was.”

“I was unhealthy,” says Khloé (in 2010) of the years before she found her routine. “I wasn’t aware that you have to take care of yourself from the inside out.”

Back in Action As Odom recovered, “I told myself, ‘You have to get back in the gym!’ ” says Khloé (in September).

For the first month I wasn’t even thinking about that. It was about Lamar, not me. But normally, when I’m going through stuff, I have my release of energy and stress at the gym. But I didn’t leave the hospital room for a month. I was just sitting

there—no hustle and bustle of life, no moving around. I wasn’t sleeping. I went a week without showering. Finally I was like, “Okay, I need to take a shower.” Just the little things make you feel so much better. We take for granted those little things. I had to just remember that even though something tragic was going on in my life, I still needed a few minutes. What about your diet? I eliminated the gym, but I was more aware of what I was putting into my body. I wasn’t letting it all go! Water flushes you out and makes you feel better. In the hospital, all I drank was water. I was like a fish!

‘I don’t believe in one size fits all. Beauty is not defined by a number’

I worked so hard to get here, I couldn’t lose it! How do you feel now?

I’m getting back into my routine. I’m doing four days a week. I wish I was back to five days a week! I’m trying to get back there. How did cutting out dairy affect your weight?

When I lost 11 lbs. in one month, I didn’t want it to be true, because cheese was my vice! But my skin also got clearer, I had more energy, and I wasn’t congested. If I have a taste now, it’s crazy how quickly I feel like it does upset my stomach and I feel more sluggish. Your fridge is famously hyper-organized. Does that make healthy eating easier?

Yes! I always have healthy items available to me when I’m hungry, so it’s available quickly. I’d rather eat a cookie than cut up vegetables, but now I don’t have an excuse. What sorts of things do you stock?

I have sliced watermelon, pineapple. I’m a huge berry person. I like deli meats to eat as a snack. And I have individual hummus snacks that I prepack so I can eat on the go. And I buy organic, thanks to Kourtney! On the weekends, we take the kids to the local farmer’s markets. Do you still indulge?

I don’t deprive myself. I am still the person who is going to have a piece of cake, I just won’t have two of them! I started having long-term feelgood moments from the gym. You don’t have long-term feel-good moments from pizza. Do you feel pressure to be a certain size?

Beauty is personal. Just because someone else is 110 lbs. doesn’t mean that I’m made to be 110 lbs. I could be 150 lbs. and still be beautiful and the best I’ve ever looked!

Hall portrayed the character he made famous in his ’76 film The Man Who Fell to Earth and quietly left for a waiting car when the curtain fell. And if the man who once reinvented himself as an elegant character called the Thin White Duke seemed a little thinner, a touch paler, well, that was to be expected: A month shy of 69, he was about to release his 25th studio album, Blackstar. Only Bowie’s family and closest friends knew the truth, that he had cancer, the news reportedly delivered by doctors some 18 months earlier. The album would arrive to critical acclaim on Jan. 8, his birthday. Two days later he died, his wife of nearly 24 years, Iman, and his children, filmmaker son Duncan, 44, and daughter Alexandria, 15, said to be at his side. But it’s easy to forget how radical David Bowie was. Madonna’s constant gift for reinvention? She borrowed it from Bowie. Boy George and Prince’s gender-bending? Bowie did it first. Kanye West’s revolutionary music videos? Bowie pioneered the form. Wherever music (or fashion or art or movies) were going, Bowie, always, had already been. But that outsize persona—or personas, since Ziggy Stardust gave way to Major Tom, the Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane and ultimately an elder statesman of rock—was one of the kindest, most down-to-earth of legends. “That’s the thing, you missed the person,” says Bowie’s 1990 tour director 4 Adrian Belew. “Even though he was such a superstar, therewas a person there, of course, and the person was just an amazing guy.” Born David Robert Jones in the south London neighborhood of Brixton, Bowie didn’t show early signs of being a revolutionary artist—just a frustrated midFAMILY BUSINESS dle-class son of charity Director Duncan worker John and waitress Jones (below in ’09) Peggy, with a dull home said visiting his dad on film sets “made a life, says childhood friend

He found a passion for music and art at

Bromley Technical High School, taking up the saxophone and later churning through bands in the mid-’60s, trying to find his sound. In 1967 the search drove Bowie to study under mime artist and choreographer Lindsay Kemp. It was under Kemp that he began developing the showmanship that would lead to Ziggy Stardust. “He didn’t astonish me during the classes,” says Kemp. “But as soon as he was made up and costumed and set foot on the stage, he just lit it up. His charisma just filled the stage with light.” Ziggy Stardust didn’t just make Bowie a world-famous pop star but a fashionicon.SaysBritishcouturierElizabeth Emanuel, who designed Princess Diana’s wedding dress: “He had that look about him, with the very pale skin and amazing makeup. B. SMITH & HUSBAND DAN GASBY

or most ofherlife,Barbara Smith—known to the world as B.—seemed to have it all. After a high-profile career as a model, she embraced her love of cooking and opened three eponymous restaurants, wrote three cookbooks, hosted a nationally syndicated show, B. Smith with Style, and even created her own home-goods collection for Bed, Bath & Beyond. Along the way she found her Prince Charming: second husband Dan Gasby, a TV producer she wed in 1992. (The marriage also brought her a stepdaughter, Dana, now 29.) “We were perfect,” says Gasby, 62. “I could look across the room and know what B. was thinking.” Then, five years ago, it all began to fall apart. Gasby was noticing uncharacteristic behavior in his wife, including mood swings, midnight kitchen raids and, most of all, forgetfulness. In 2013 tests confirmed what they feared most: B. had early Alzheimer’s. Now in the middle stages of the disease, she still recognizes loved ones and can dress herself and communicate, but she can’t be left alone and has a GPS medallion around her neck in case she wanders. “In many respects now I don’t have a wife, I’m just a caregiver,” Gasby says at the Sag Harbor, N.Y., home he and B. share. “It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever dealt with.” The couple open up about their journey in a new book, Before I Forget: Love, Hope, Help, and Acceptance in Our Fight Against Alzheimer’s, excerpted below. “I felt we had to speak out,” says Gasby, who wants to lend their voices to the push for more research funding. “This disease disproportionately impacts women and people of color. I want the government to do what the government should do.” To the

B: I’m still myself. I just can’t remem-

How long are we staying?” It’s like I’m talking to the self I used to be. I’m conscious of that other self guiding me now. Things first began to unravel around 2010. Though B.’s businesses were thriving, there were signs that something wasn’t right with her. D: It crept up quietly. I’m superclean,

and B. is, too, yet she started leaving things around the house. Food was left in the fridge until it went bad. One day she put my wallet on top of the car and drove off. Then B. left the roof of our truck open. That night we had a rainstorm. I call it our WTF period. B. would seem preoccupied. If I kept insisting she say what was on her mind, she’d burst out with, “I hate you!” My marriage was on the brink. Next, B. began sleepwalking and missing important business meetings. She had no memory of the night before. Seeking a more manageable life, the couple moved to their Hamptons home full-time. B. began fixating on returning to her childhood home in Everson, Pa. B: Maybe I’ll take my parents with me.

Expert Tip!

BUYING “Look for these qualities in dry pasta: 100 percent semolina flour (the higher the protein in semolina, the better—14 percent is good) and a rough, opaque finish that’s not shiny or blotchy.”

To prepare the broccoli rabe, ‘clip off about a third of the lower part of the stems, remove the tough larger leaves, and if remaining stems are tough, peel them with a standard potato peeler,’ says Bastianich.

COOKING “Salt boiling water, but never add oil; it coats the pasta and makes it slippery so the sauce won’t adhere properly. Lasagna is the exception—oil prevents the sheets from sticking.”

1 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 ⁄2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano 1. Bring a large pot of water with 2 tbsp. salt to a boil for the pasta. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, and add 1 tbsp. olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the sausages and brown all over, about 6 minutes; remove to a plate.

For Kate Hudson, red carpet beauty prep is an excuse to party with her glam squad. With a mix of hip-hop, rock and Britney Spears on blast, makeup artist Mélanie Inglessis created a “Studio 54-inspired” look to complement the presenter’s Michael Kors Collection bandeau gown, while her hairstylist David Babaii perfected her freshly cut long bob (he chopped off seven inches of her hair that day). What was Hudson’s reaction to the look? “She flipped out over it. She was like, ‘Yay, it’s a winner!’ ” Inglessis says.

MAKING THE CUT How did Hudson’s shorter do come to be? “I said, ‘Let’s just go for it!’ ” revealed GHD Brand Ambassador David Babaii (pictured). The star’s reply? “Do whatever you want!” PEOPLE January 25, 2016

Meet Our Twins

Raising their first child was a trying—make that tiring—experience for actors Steve Howey and Sarah Shahi. “We used to go on vacations all the time, but then suddenly Sarah was pregnant,” says Howey, 38, of the pair, who wed in 2009 then welcomed son William Wolf. “All our energy was going to the baby.” And exhaustion became even more inevitable once they welcomed twins Violet (older by two hours) and Knox in March. “It is not easy—but all three are beautiful babies,” says Howey. “We’re a very close-knit family, just bigger.” And often on different coasts. Shahi, 36, had the twins (who were delivered at home in Sherman Oaks, Calif.) with her for more than six months in New York, where she was filming Person of Interest, while Howey stayed in L.A. with Wolf, now 6, and shot Shameless. “It wasn’t ideal,” admits Shahi, “but we made it work with lots of communication.” The family is now reunited in L.A., where the twins’ bond becomes clearer every day. “Knox loves to play with Violet, but he’s 35 lbs.—10 lbs. heavier than her. It’s like an elephant trying to play with an ant,” jokes Shahi. “Still, they have their sweet moments when they look for each other and smile.” —PATRICK GOMEZ

Kevin Hart THE ACTOR, 36, HITS THE STREETS AGAIN IN THE NEW COMEDY RIDE ALONG 2 Last gift I gave My kids wanted a white Christmas, so I took my family to Aspen. It was amazing! We went skiing; we did it all.

Last time I was starstruck When I met Don Johnson, that was a big deal. I was a huge Miami Vice fan, so meeting him was a big, big plus. I’m in Miami now, so I can’t wait to throw on my Don Johnsonlike outfit for tonight.

Last time I couldn’t stop laughing Probably talking to my kids [Heaven, 10, and Hendrix, 8]. They are, by far, two of the funniest people in the world. We have great conversations. When your kids get older, they start to speak their minds, and you’re shocked at some of the stuff that comes out of their mouths.

Last time I cried Probably a year ago at my daughter’s daddy-daughter dance at school. She was very pretty. And I went full suited and booted for my baby.

Last irrational fear
