The park features many monuments dedicated to those who died while protecting the Motherland, which gives this place a special atmosphere. The Glory Obelisk takes the central place in the park. The Eternal Fire also reminds us about heroic deeds of our ancestors. Finally, there is an observational terrace with a spectacular view on Kiev Pechersk Lavra and the Motherland monument in the park. There is also a Ukrainian tradition that after having the official ceremony at the registry office, the newly married go to the Park of Eternal Glory to lay flowers to the Monument of an Unknown Soldier. Nobody knows when this tradition was born, but it has been popular for a long time. One of the latest monuments, located in this park, is the monument on the honor of Victims of Starvation during 1932–1933. You can see a bell tower in the shape of a burning candle in the middle of the monument. In a word, the Park of the Eternal Glory is a perfect place to dive into history while having a rest. If you walk downstairs from the Park of the Eternal Glory, you will find yourself in Pechersk Park. This landscape park was created in 1981 as a line of city parks along the banks of the Dnipro. Since then, pathways have been laid as well as places for relaxation, stairs, flowerbeds and lawns. In the center, there is an open space called Spivoche Pole where numerous concerts, festivals, and exhibitions are held. Every year, you can enjoy wonderful exhibitions of flowers.

The Green City in Europe:

KIEV’S 10 BEST PARKS

From 13 April until 10 May, a grand exhibition of tulips is being held here, called “A Mystery of Easter Egg.” More than 200 species of tulips were planted. As this event coincides with the celebration of Easter, 10 decorative Easter eggs were installed, and you will be able to trace the symbolism of “pysanka” in all the exhibition.

Ask any tourist about his first impressions of Kiev: he’ll almost certainly mention what a green city it is. In fact, according to several recent surveys, our capital is the leader among the greenest European cities. There are more than 100 parks, nearly 500 public gardens, and 78 boulevards, and as a result, there is 20 sq.m. of greenery per resident! All this green space brings joy to Ukrainians and tourists alike. To take a walk in the park, getting some fresh air, to take a break after a hard workday, enjoying the twitter of birds… it sounds perfect, doesn’t it? In the spring, the atmosphere of the parks and gardens is more than perfect. Flowers have just blossomed out, bushes and trees are blooming, and birds have come back from the warm countries and are chirping without stopping. Today we offer you the chance to postpone all your affairs and join us in a walk through Kiev’s green spaces. Aesthetic pleasure and a good mood are guaranteed!

THE FEOFANIYA PARK If you are looking for a place to relax from the city bustle, the Feofaniya Park is exactly what you need. Located in a historic place on the outskirts of Kiev near the beautiful large Eastern Orthodox St. Pantaleon Cathedral, it was declared a government designated park that belongs to the “Feofaniya” conservatory of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine in 1992. A pilgrimage path runs on the territory of the park, and there are some unusual springs with healing water along it. The park is also known for having many medicinal plants, cozy alleys, the cascade of lakes with plenty of fish, and tiny bridges. The Feofaniya Park is that rare place where a wild forest and refined territory are harmoniously combined. It looks amazing in each season of the year and is always right for dreaming, taking pictures or going for a walk with your friends or alone.

MARIYINSKY PARK Mariyinsky Park is one of the most popular and romantic parks in Kiev, probably because it is located in the heart of the city and for its incredible loveliness and cleanliness. Combining natural beauty and architectural elements, Mariyinsky Park is one of Kiev’s oldest parks, founded in the eighteenth century. You can see many decorative trees (around 80 species), beautiful flowers and lush bushes. The Mariyinsky Palace was built in 1755 and named after Russian Emperor Alexander II’s wife Mariya, who admired the palace and actively participated in the reconstruction of the park in front of it. Nowadays, Mariyinsky Palace, located next to the Parliament, is a ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine (since 2002, the Palace has been under reconstruction). There is also a viewing platform, an open-air stage with the nickname “seashell,” a fountain, clean alleys and comfortable benches. It’s a great destination for outdoor sports, where you can rent bicycles, rollerblades, and recently popular velomobiles and electric scooters. The most romantic place, the Lover’s Bridge, traditionally covered with many love locks, is also located here, and it joins Khreshchatyy and Mariyinsky Parks. Don’t forget to take your camera! There are wonderful views of the Dnipro River and many unique monuments.

located in the city center on the hill close to Khreshchatyk str., the European square

TARAS SHEVCHENKO PARK Taras Shevchenko Park is a small, well-maintained park located just in the heart of the city. The main (red) building of the National Taras Shevchenko University is in Volodymyrska street opposite the park. It is jokingly called the “Green Building” of the university, as students prefer to go for a walk there instead of attending lectures. The park was opened to public in 1890 as “the University Botanical Garden.” Nowadays, in the middle of the park, there is a monument honoring of the poet and cultural activist Taras Shevchenko (1814 – 1861) who remains the great symbol of the independent Ukraine and always keeps a wary eye on everything that is going on here. Walking in the park, you will find a wellequipped playground, many creatively constructed benches and kiosks to stop for a coffee. There is also a beautiful fountain in this park, which usually starts functioning in May.

In short, it is a great place to take a break during a workday, to dance salsa or practice yoga on the weekend, to read a book or play a game of chess, and to get a huge inspiration for the whole day…

This national park covers an area of 140 acres, so it will take you a full day to walk through the territory. In the north of the park, there is a broad-leaved forest (beech, oak, linden, elm, maple trees grow there).

This botanical garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was named after the Soviet botanist Mykola Hryshko. Its huge territory covers 1.3 sq.km, so you can stroll around the garden all day. Here you’ll find more than 13 thousand types of trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants from all over the world. The garden has hothouses, conservatories, greenhouses and rosaries on its territory. It is divided into floristic complexes, such as Ukrainian Carpathians, Plains of Ukraine, Crimea, Caucasus, Central Asia, Altai and Western Siberia, and the Far East. The plants typical of each region can be found in each zone. The Garden of Lilac is a calling card of Hryshko National Botanical Garden. It is the second largest Garden of Lilac in the world with 21 species, 90 kinds and 1500 bushes of lilac. In May, there is a real miracle in Hryshko National Botanical Garden, when the lilac is in blossom. It has become a tradition to come there to admire the beauty of landscapes, the density of flowering, the luxuriance of the bushes and an unsurpassed aroma. Each branch is unique, and each bush is a masterpiece created by nature itself... Find the calendar of flowering on the official website of the garden (http://www.nbg.kiev.ua/en/) in order not to miss the blossoming of magnolia or the odor of lilac. April 28 – May 2 — Spring landscape 2017 dedicated to the Year of Japan in Ukraine during which many land art competitions will be held. May 22–26 — the 8th conference “Planta Europe”

SAINT VOLODYMYR HILL

The southern part has a sandy terrain where you will see pine and alder forests. The western part is swampy, where a deciduous forest grows. The eastern part is represented mainly with a pine forest. There are 23 species of different plants registered in the Red Book of Ukraine, and there are also some oaks which are more than 200 years old.

This park is called a “green island” in the center of Kiev. A lot of writers, poets and artists came there to draw inspiration or just to admire the views. Originally, this park was called St. Michael’s Hill, named after St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral and Monastery. It gained its popularity around 1850-1880 when it was Kiev’s only free park.

The park also contains four lakes and miles of paved and dirt pathways for walking, hiking, and cycling. It also provides children (both young and old) with an assortment of playgrounds, carnival rides, paddle boats, and booths of toys, trinkets, and snacks. Holosiivskyi National Nature Park is a place where people regularly meet to run or cycle together, to take their pets for strolls in the fresh air or just spend some time with their friends or music in the headphones. The fresh air and natural atmosphere will provide you with a good mood and much energy to discover other places of interest in Kiev.

Nowadays, you can observe the monument honoring him, which has become the park’s main attraction, and since then it has been called Saint Volodymyr Hill. It is a majestic place, with wonderful views of the Dnipro River and the left bank of Kiev. The park contains a spacious observation deck, Kokorivska Arbor, various paths and numerous stairs. At night, the large cross held in the right hand of Volodymyr is illuminated, giving the impression of the miracle. Don’t miss the opportunity to see it with your own eyes! KHRESHCHATY PARK This park is located in the historical part of Kiev, next to the European Square. Visiting here, therefore, means seeing some of the best places in Kiev because it leads to Saint Volodymyr Hill and picturesque slopes of the Dnipro. The old name of this park was the Garden of Merchants’ Meetings because the building for those meetings was located there (today the building is occupied by the National Philharmonic of Ukraine). Many historians believe that there would not have been a park if the meetings had not been held at that place. Today Khreshchaty and Mariyinsky Parks make up the Park Circle of Kiev. Many native Ukrainian plants grow in Khreshchaty Park, but there are also some species imported from abroad that have successfully taken root in our climate. One of the main landmarks here is the People’s Friendship Arch, a huge rainbow-shaped symbolic monument that embodies the brotherhood of all Slavic people. Immediately after the Arch, there is an observation point with lovely views of the Dnipro and Kiev’s left bank. Here you may try extreme flying over the Dnieper on a zip line that is very popular in warm weather.

The area is located on the south end of Kyiv close to “Holosiyivskiy” old forest and historical village Pyrogovo

OPEN-AIR MUSEUM OF NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE “PYROGOVO” The Museum of National Architecture and Life is an opportunity to walk through the most interesting corners of Ukraine, to get acquainted with the everyday life and household items, in a word to see the life of Ukrainian people, who lived in the 17th–20th centuries from the inside. The museum was founded in 1969, but opened to visitors in 1976. The territory is divided into the ethnographic regions of Ukraine, which represent the peculiarities of everyday life of one or another historical period. “Pyrogovo” is growing more and more popular, and the collection of architectural buildings is improving every year. During Ukrainian folk festivals, special theatrical performances take place on the museum grounds, at which people dance around the fire, sing and entertain in traditional Ukrainian ways.

In Khreshchaty Park, you’ll also find the Kiev Academic Puppet Theatre, which resembles a castle with fabulous sculptures in its yard, and the Kiev Water Museum, where you will be able to learn much interesting information about this natural resource, take funny pictures and even stand for a while in a soap bubble!

The capital of Ukraine is truly a green city. Parks can help you to rest for your body and soul, to switch off your brain and just enjoy a pleasant walk, while chatting, eating ice cream or being silent. Fresh air, flowers, and greenery are plentiful in these spaces, the perfect place to turn to when the smog of city life gets you down. KYOTO PARK Kyoto Park is a symbol of the relationship between Japan and Ukraine, which was opened in 1972. In spring, you can feel like a real guest of the Land of the Rising Sun, when Japanese cherries are in blossom. Architects tried to preserve the appearance and symbols to create a real Japanese park. You can see the stone of honorable sitting, the stone of cave form, the guardian stone, and the stone of the moon shadow. People who are not aware of Japanese culture will explain these symbols as no more than a poetic sophistication. However, for the Japanese, such names have a profound philosophical meaning. The alley of oriental cherries in Kyoto Park is almost one kilometer long, with 360 trees. There is also a pond with a waterfall, a small hill resembling Mount Fuji, and a selection of trees that carry a certain significant meaning: a tree hiding a waterfall, a tree of the setting sun etc. If you are fond of Japanese culture or just looking for a place to go for a walk, visit Kyoto Park. You will not regret it! Kioto str., close to Lisova or Chernigivska metro stations, Red Line

Spoken by over 40 million people, the Ukrainian language was recognized as the second most melodic language in the world by a competition in Italy and was declared as the third most beautiful language according to phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology and sentence structure in 1934 during a Paris contest. That probably explains the high popularity of Ukrainian songs in international contests like Eurovision, where Ukraine regularly takes top places and recently became the first Eastern European country to win the contest twice.

20 ESSENTIAL PHRASES to feel at Home in Kiev Quick facts about Ukrainian: • 41–45 million people in the world speak Ukrainian. • According to various sources, it is between the 25th and 32nd most-spoken language in the world. • The closest language to Ukrainian is Belarusian, which shares about 84% of its vocabulary. Next come Polish, Serbian and Russian (which shares nearly 62%). • Practically everyone in Kiev speaks both Ukrainian and Russian. Of the two, the usage of Ukrainian is gradually increasing. • Ukrainian varies by region, especially between east and west. The dialects can be quite complicated, but they help to feel the local color deeply. While traveling to a foreign country, it’s always important to learn some basic expressions. Even 20 phrases can help you not get lost in the unfamiliar environment, get your point across to locals, make friends and just have the real “local” experience. In that spirit, here are some choice phrases we’ve assembled to help ease your stay, meet new people and (hopefully) celebrate your nation’s Eurovision victory! Try a few, and you’ll be amazed how much people appreciate the effort.

LAST MONTH’S LOST HIGHLIGHTS IN UKRAINE

Welcome to the prominent bar-museum located near Independence Square, a successful continuation of the noble Nikka Whiskey tradition in Ukraine. You should definitely visit N:B Cocktails Bar if you are looking for hospitable atmosphere, variety of yummy cocktails, elegant decor imbued with love for oriental martial arts, and a true samurai spirit in the air. The real symbol and hostess of this place is a friendly dog Morihei, originally from Tibet, who greets the precious guests. Believe me, this place is one of the few where you will be treated on a higher level! The bar combines renewed drinks with a base of Nikka whiskey and timeless classic and original cocktails from bartender Andrew Molnar who agreed to share with us the worthwhile story of his favorite

drink with a fateful name “№13” or “Baker’s Dozen” (UAH 139). Whether you believe in the power of numbers or not, the most meaningful events in Andrew’s life are related to the number 13. Probably because of that, his bar is located at №13 on Mykhailivska Str. and can be proud of an adorable cocktail that features the fantastic Ron Zacapa, renowned Amaro

What is that vivid, stylish and challenging mixture that can replenish any lost fluid in your body? Even the word “cocktail” is associated with something original and unusual. No wonder — both luck and coincidence were required before achieving this invention. One of the most popular stories behind the cocktail name refers to rooster’s tail (or Cock’s Tail). No one knows if that’s true, but it is hard to argue that the colors of the mixed ingredients remind us of the bright, magic colors of the cock’s tail...

At the height of the Red Rooster 2017 year, our team opened the curtains of Kiev’s best cocktail bars, perfect for a relaxing evening or a vibrant night out. Enjoy the greatest options available when drinking in Kiev — сheers!

TO BE & COCKTAIL “WAIKIKI”

CHI & COCKTAIL “SCOTCH TREASURE” CHI is an oasis of relaxation in the picturesque part of the city, both a luxury restaurant and “party place” with a great summer terrace and magnificent views of Dnieper River. Everything here is in the best traditions of Southeastern Asia, India and China, adapted to European tastes. You will find a master copy of the Terracotta Army securing the entrance that makes you slow down and feel the strong energy that CHI is so famous for.

N::B COCKTAILS BAR & COCKTAIL «BAKER’S DOZEN»/ “№13”

Special attention should be paid to the bar in CHI, headed by a mixologist from London. Interestingly, most of garnishes and ingredients for cocktails are made in-house. All this magic happens in a lab behind the curtains so that you can enjoy the original fresh syrups, liqueurs, infusions, foams, blends, sorbets etc.

This famous bar in Podil is probably one of the best places to enjoy a great variety of alcoholic drinks and an extremely wide range of hookahs on the big terrace, open year-round. Besides that, “To Be” is famous for interesting modern design enriched with many wood and metal elements, a separate tea bar with many tea mixes and classic teas, and themed weeks devoted to different national cuisines. If you are lucky enough to come here, seize the opportunity to try their wonderful black sushi rolls, beef tartare with truffle caviar or veal medallions.

Among the endless attractive choices, we recommend the “Scotch treasure”

Special attention should be paid to the constantly renewing and increasing bar card here. We highly recommend discovering the refreshing cocktail “Waikiki” (UAH 160), dedicated to the founding father of Tiki culture Don the Beachcomber, who invented the tiki bar and opened his second “Polynesian Village” in the resort area called Waikiki Beach. Bartenders at “To Be” know the real value of Tiki traditions and will make sure your evenings never run dry here. Note, it is better to book table at the “To Be” bar in advance.

Everything here is designed around a medical doctor theme so that you feel yourself in a nut hospital: waiters are dressed as nurses, and a wide array of shots are served in test tubes. Palata №6’s food is good, and the decor is fun and lets you get into the spirit.

WHISKY CORNER & COCKTAIL “CALEDONIAN COFFЕE” “The one who says there is truth in wine, has never tried whisky” - the motto of the Scottish house-restaurant “Whisky Corner”, a true piece of Scotland in the capital of Ukraine. In this unique conceptual restaurant, whisky is held in especially high esteem. There are over 750 unique whisky samples from all over the world, accompanied by traditional dishes of Scottish and European cuisine. As the Scottish still use the old cooking methods, be ready to find different smoked products, nourishing soups and meat and fish dishes as well as famous Scottish haggis on the restaurant menu. The real highlight of the restaurant and the favorite “dessert” of guests is “Caledonian

Coffеe” (UAH 139), a fantastic combination of aromatic coffee with fresh rich cream and well-chosen single-malt Scotch whiskey Glen Grant Majors Reserve. This admirable original analogue to Irish coffee will cheer you up and bring inspiration for the whole day! MOZGI BAR & COCKTAIL “PORN STAR MARTINI” An exclusive gastro bar with a convenient location that offers equally tasty dinner and drinks. Situated outside the Arena City complex, Mozgi Bar attracts attention by its distinguishing interior designed in the steampunk style. Overall, it looks like a working mechanism, the mechanism of the brain (“mozgi” in Russian), so you will find a lot of creatively combined elements made from glass and steel. Feel free to ask the waiter more about the concept of the bar, and you will find out a lot of interesting details. Meat ideology is the main priority of Mozgi Bar, so meat prevails here in most menu options. Snatch your chance to enjoy the special dish “Pork ribs in homemade BBQ sauce,” especially preferred by guests.

The oddest cocktail in this place is called “Helmet” (UAH 100). Let me tell you why... The cocktail serving includes a vibrant show that involves you wearing a helmet that is set alight and drinking shots while the staff smash your head with random objects. This cocktail is for boldest, I would say. In any case, it is very interesting and exciting to watch! Note that it’s tricky to find this place for tourists, so ask locals to show you around. It will definitely be worth the effort! Working hours: 11-02 +380 44 4865152 31A Bulvarno-Kudryavska Str. palata6.io.ua

LYSA GORA BAR & COCKTAIL “LYSA GORA” Have you heard that Kiev is the capital of religions and at the same time - the capital of witches? In Kiev, witches were never persecuted and were respected a lot due to their transcendent capacities! For witches’ sabbath, they usually gathered on one of Kiev’s 13 bald mountains - Lysa Gora.

Mozgi Bar will pleasantly surprise you with its wide range of alcohol and the high professionalism of its bartenders. The calling card of this place is the cocktail “Porn Star Martini” (UAH 220), a tasty mix of Finlandia vodka, Vanille de Madagascar liqueur, martini prosecco and egg white with tasty notes of passionfruit, lime and orange bitters.

To revive the ancient traditions of magic, a new Lysa Gora Bar was recently opened just in the city center. Mystic interior with various herbs, protective charms, numerous candles, and switches will bring you to the eternal world of magic where all

INTERVIEW

Jenia Galich is the frontman of Ukrainian rock group O.Torvald, which is representing Ukraine at the 62nd song contest «Eurovision 2017» with the song «Time.» O.Torvald was created in 2005 in Poltava, and in 2006 the musicians moved to Kiev, where they launched themselves into intensive, creative activities: 10 years of rehearsals, club performances, and various tours. The rewards of their persistent work have included five studio albums, numerous fans and victory at the Ukrainian national final for Eurovision 2017.

1

Jenia, during 14 years of our participation in the Eurovision song contest, Ukraine has generally been represented by female soloists. Why did Ukrainians choose your group this year?

This year our country needs to be represented with a strong man’s face. Jamala perfectly did it last year; she is a delightful vocalist and a strong personality. However, this year O.Torvald is ready to do its best, fight up to the end to represent our country with dignity.

2

You have chosen a very serious song for the Eurovision song contest. Why did you make up your mind to touch upon the theme of time?

Unfortunately, sometimes it happens that we start appreciating a person after we have lost them. I have a tattoo with the inscription “All in good time,” so I am for that we value the present, respect the past and think of the future. It is very important.

3

What were your feelings when you arrived in Kiev for the first time? Did it become your hometown?

At first it seemed very large to me, and I could not realize how so many people lived there — and I also understood that it would be not that easy to reach those goals we had set with the group. But now, we are approaching step by step to making our dreams come true. There is no doubt that Kiev became my hometown because my family lives here and my daughter was born here too. However, I miss Poltava and Bila Tserkava, the cities where I was born and grew up.

4

“Yaroslavna” is a great café with pies, which are known by all Kiev residents. If we speak about street food, I prefer Kiev perepichka and shawarma.

What is your favorite place in Kiev? What makes it different from other European cities?

6

It is very difficult to be objective as I live in Kiev; however, I am a tourist in other cities. I prefer walking along Yaroslavov Val and Reytarskaya Streets; I adore the Golden Gate and the streets near this historical monument. I also like St. Nicholas Catholic Cathedral, near Olimpiiska metro station. It is an improbable architectural monument that is tattooed on my shoulder.

5

Barbara Bar is my favorite bar, where you can taste delicious food and listen to music. If we speak about concert halls, I can suggest Sentrum, Bel étage, Atlas, those clubs that were created for concerts and live music.

7

What and where should our tourists taste?

What must be done to attract as many tourists as possible to Kiev?

The whole infrastructure for the development of tourism has to work. It is necessary to improve the work of Kiev’s museums, to organize a lot of events and to carry out them regularly (such as the Day of Street Music, sports marathons), to create new programs in order to show that our city is lively. The organizers of these events must be interested in tourists sincerely and not just want to earn money. Improvement of the city – roads, infrastructure — is also very important.

I like “Kanapa” restaurant on Andriyivsky Descent, where Ukrainian dishes are prepared with a special chef’s approach.

for Kiev Visitors in May TIP 1

TIP 5 TIP 6

CASH & CURRENCY EXCHANGE In Kiev most retail points you can use credit cards to pay, however, traveler’s checks are generally not accepted. It is highly advisable always to have some cash with you as well. Note that all cash payments within Ukraine are allowed in the local currency Hryvnia (UAH) only. As of this writing, 1 USD equals to roughly 27 UAH.

You can easily exchange any major foreign currency to Hryvnia at the airport, one of the local banks, or endless exchange kiosks located around the city. Because of non-favourable rates at the airport, only exchange minimum amount at the airport. Whenever exchanging the money, you can ask for a “form 377” in case you plan to exchange leftover Hryvnia back to foreign currency when leaving the country.

ACCOMMODATION If you are traveling on business, you will feel quite at home staying at one of the many well-established international hotel chains such as Hilton, Radisson, InterContinental, Hyatt, Fairmont Grand, etc. in Kiev. However note that their prices in Kiev can be quite steep for a non-business traveler (in the $200-400 range per night).

TIP 3

For individual travelers, staying in a local hotel or one of the service apartments can be a very attractive option. Local hotels are usually cheaper but their quality

varies greatly. Do your homework before you book a local hotel. Alternatively, daily rent of a serviced apartment in the city center is very popular among foreign travelers. You can find such accommodations through websites such as Dobovo, Airbnb, Booking and others. The price would be usually around USD 30-80 per night (depending on location and quality of internal design). Typically you will get a cosy furnished apartment consisting of bedroom, living room, bathroom, and a kitchenette.

MEETING WITH LOCALS Ukrainian nation is one of the most hospitable on Earth. People are generally friendly and glad to meet new people. Visiting theater, opera, concert or other Kiev activities can be a great way to meet locals with common interests. Also, there are a lot of opportunities to make friends with them during various networking events and local meetup groups. BUSINESS CORNER

DOING BUSINESS IN UKRAINE -

• Both work permit and temporary residence permit applications are subject to review and approval by government authorities. However, under valid grounds, there should be no problem with the approval process.

Tips for Foreigners Following the recent reforms and closer ties with West, Ukraine is gradually becoming an attractive, albeit still difficult, place to do business and invest for the foreign business community. Regardless of the still weak political, legal, and financial climate in the country, Ukraine has an excellent geographic location, the largest territory in Europe, rich natural resources, and a low cost but skilled workforce. Ukraine’s confusing regulatory regime, ever-changing regulations and significant red tape can cost foreign investors significant money and time. In our experience, every day we encounter front-facing government staff, bank representatives, private consultants, and notaries who are not aware of the latest changes and provide incorrect information. But these challenges are by no means insurmountable, the savvy entrepreneur can easily find his/her way past to make some great investments. Here’s a list of business tips for any foreign individual exploring doing business or investing in Ukraine. Note that law and regulations change frequently, therefore always consult for the latest updates before making any decisions!

PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNTS As a foreign national (resident or non-resident), you are allowed to open the following types of personal bank accounts in Ukraine: • Regular current and savings accounts in the local currency UAH and selected foreign currencies. • An Investment Account that allows foreigners to make investments into Ukraine and subsequently repatriate profits and capital out of the country. Keep the following points in mind when opening and operating your bank account in Ukraine: • Rules for bank accounts vary depending on the type and are strictly regulated by Ukrainian Banking law. For example, you are not allowed to withdraw cash from your investment bank account (whereas it is possible from a regular current bank account). Therefore, use the type of

• You can use your debit card (linked to your regular current account) when making purchases overseas as well as withdraw cash, subject to certain limits.

STARTING A COMPANY While there are a number of different business structures available in Ukraine, the most suitable limited liability structure for a small- to mid-sized business in Ukraine is a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Both resident and non-resident foreigners are free to incorporate a LLC and can be 100% shareholders of the company. Points to note when opening a LLC: • The process of incorporating a company is fairly straightforward and can be completed in 1-2 working days after all the necessary documents are ready.

WORK AND RESIDENCE PERMITS Work permits and residence permits are two different permits issued to foreigners. With the exception of few situations, both permits are required when relocating to operate or work for a company in Ukraine. Keep in mind the following: • Foreign entrepreneurs who have opened their LLC company in Ukraine will need to apply for both permits if they wish to relocate to Ukraine. The same is true when the LLC is hiring other foreign staff.

• The director of an LLC can be only an individual who has right to reside in Ukraine (a citizen of Ukraine, or a permanent citizen or foreign individual who has obtained a work and residence permit in Ukraine). Corporate directors are not permitted.

• Certain categories of foreign citizens (such as permanent residents of Ukraine, employees of representative offices and permanent establishments of foreign companies, representatives of foreign mass media, professional athletes, artists and some others) do not need to apply for work permits when working in Ukraine (but they still need to obtain residence permits). However, in most other cases, a valid work permit is required before commencing work.

• A Ukrainian company must have a local registered address.

• The processing time for a work permit application is about 1 month.

• Foreign entrepreneurs who wish to relocate to Ukraine to operate their company can apply for relocation visa (work permit & residence permit), which is subject to approval by authorities.

• After the work permit application has been approved, the permit holder must obtain a temporary residence permit if he/she plans to relocate to Ukraine to work. Family members are also eligible to obtain the temporary residence permit.

It’s important to work with a knowledgeable and competent corporate services

• Obtaining a residence permit takes up to 15 days upon application.

• Prior to registration of an LLC, foreign shareholders need to obtain a Ukrainian tax number.

TAXES Tax rate in Ukraine depends on the type of taxpayer and her income. The base tax rates are listed below: • Corporate tax rate: 18%

bank account that corresponds to your planned purpose and transactions. • While you are free to deposit money into these accounts from overseas and bonafide local payments, cash withdrawals in foreign currency as well as overseas transfers are subject to certain limits at present (depending on types of bank account and transaction). These restrictions are a result of the currency controls imposed by the government mainly because of the political and economic crisis that started in 2013 and still lingers today. They apply both to businesses as well as individuals, although the specific rules may vary.

Due to attractive prices in the current Ukrainian real-estate market, foreign investors are increasingly interested in purchasing residential property here. However, the real-estate market in Ukraine is not very mature and therefore often fraught with significant difficulties and risks at almost every step of the transaction. It’s extremely important to work with a knowledgeable and trustworthy legal advisor when dealing with real-estate in Ukraine. Here are some basic guidelines: • It is important to perform the deal and payment strictly in accordance with Ukrainian Civil, Banking and Investment law to avoid future difficulties with repatriation of investments and investment income. • Proper due diligence as well as proper legal planning and examination of real-estate transactions are crucial while investing in real-estate in Ukraine due to risk of fraud. • The commission of real-estate agencies is typically around 3–5% from the real-estate purchase price, payable only if the deal is concluded. Real-estate agencies are not regulated and do not require a license to operate. Therefore, we highly recommend that you also use an independent real-estate legal advisor to assist you with proper advice when concluding your transaction.

• Individual income tax rate: 18% plus 1.5% military tax • Social security tax: 22% (applicable as part of payroll tax) • VAT: 20% • Individuals registered as Private Entrepreneur (similar to Sole Proprietorship in other countries) and listed under the Simplified Tax Scheme (3rd Group): 3–5% Note that the Ukrainian tax code defines specific rates for certain types of income or transactions which can be different from the ones mentioned above. In addition, some types of income/transactions are exempt from taxation. Therefore, to define applicable tax rate for each specific case, it is important to get professional advice.

GETTING A UKRAINIAN TAX NUMBER As a foreigner, if you are planning to work, invest, or start a business in Ukraine, most likely you will need to obtain a Ukrainian tax number. Therefore, it’s usually a good idea to get this done as soon as possible. If you are overseas, the application for tax number can be filed by your representative in Ukraine under a Power of Attorney. The application processing time is about 5 working days.

HIRING STAFF In Ukraine, a company can hire people either under labour agreement (i.e. as a

salaried employee) or under civil services agreement (i.e. as a freelancer, provided the person being hired is registered as a Private Entrepreneur (PE)). If hired as a salaried employee, the company should assume roughly 40% tax overhead on top of the salary in-hand to the employee. On the other hand, in a freelancing arrangement, the salary tax burden is approx. 5%. As a result of this anomaly, many companies tend to reduce their costs by arranging staff as a mix of freelancers and full-time staff. However, such a structure requires careful tax and legal planning in order to avoid getting on the wrong side of the law.

MISTAKES IN DOCUMENTATION This is the last tip we have for you today, but it is certainly not the least! Unfortunately in Ukraine, you will often find that important agreements and documents that are prepared for you may contain misprints and errors. This can be caused by a number of reasons including lack of professional quality controls, lack of use of computer technology and automation or overworked staff. What should you do? A simple solution is to presume that the documents have errors and have them double-checked by your trusted local professional advisor. This article is brought to you by Contact Ukraine LLC - a Kyiv-based boutique firm that provides consulting and professional services to international clients in the areas of business setup, immigration, real-estate investment, taxation, banking, and living in Ukraine. If you need our services, please contact us info@contactukraine.com or visit our website at www.contactukraine.com.

PAYING FOR INVESTMENTS Foreign nationals are allowed to pay for their investments in Ukraine (opening a business, buying real-estate or other type of investment) in two possible ways: • Directly from their account overseas (in this case, payment is made in foreign currency); -or• By opening an investment bank account in Ukraine. In this case, the foreign national must transfer money in foreign currency to the investment account, convert it to local currency hryvna (UAH), and then pay for the investment in the local currency. Note that an investment account is the only type of bank account in Ukraine for foreign individuals that allows them to make settlements for their investments. www.kievcheckin.com
