Wetlands Ardhi Oevu

What is a Wetland? Wetlands are the places where land and water meet. They are the borders between aquatic (water) and terrestrial (land) environments. They can be permanently wet or can be covered with water for only a few weeks in a year. The main types of wetlands are; marsh,

swamps and bogs.

Swamps have mostly trees or shrubs. Marshes have mostly grassy plants. Bogs are spongy, mossy wetlands where plants accumulate faster than they rot away. All these plants form a thick layer called peat.

Nini maana ya Maeneo Oevu? Maeneo oevu ni maeneo ardhi na maji yanapokutana. Mara nyingi huwa ni mipaka kati ya maji na nchi kavu lakini mara nyingine huweza kujitokeza katikati ya nchi kavu. Maeneo oevu yanaweza kuwa ni ya kudumu au yanaweza kuwa oevu (enye maji) kwa wiki chache tu katika mwaka. Maeneo haya huwa na mimea ya aina mbalimbali ikiwemo miti, vichaka na nyasi. Baadhi ya maeneo oevu, huwa na mlimbikizo mkubwa wa mimea ambayo huchukua muda mrefu kuoza na hutengeneza mboji.

They are also important stops for birds to rest and eat as they migrate over long distances. • Wetlands filter, clean and store water - They are like the kidneys of other ecosystems! • Collect and hold water preventing floods. • Plants found in wetlands help control erosion by absorbing wind and tidal forces. • They are places of beauty and different recreational activities.

How will this work? Tanzania has over 400,000 R&S members. Imagine if each and every member plants just five trees at school, at home and in their communities. “We are aiming at promoting the planting of 1 million trees in the country. We encourage each member to plant at least five trees wherever they are. Because each mature tree is capable of taking in 22kgs of emitted carbon dioxide and producing 118 kgs of fresh oxygen each year. Our One Million Roots & Shoots trees are certainly going to help absorb 22 million kgs of carbon dioxide and produce 118 million kgs of fresh oxygen to the earth. This will be a huge Roots & Shoots contribution that helps making the world a better place for all living things”

Be Inspired Meet Winnie Godlove Msamba, the girl who started FanikishaMama, an organization that empowers fistula victims economically and socially through online fundraising. Winnie started the organization when she was in form three and she and her team work to raise awareness about fistula.

Winnie Godlove Msamba ni msichana alieanzisha shirika la FanikishaMama linalowasaidia wagonjwa wa fistula na kuwainua kiuchumi kupitia michango inayokusanywa kwa njia ya mtandao kupitia tovuti yao. Winnie alianzisha shirika hili akiwa kidato cha tatu na anashirikiana na timu yake kuongeza uelewa wa jamii juu ya fistula.

Getting to Know Winnie.

Winnie alisoma shule ya msingi ya serikali na alipenda sana kuwa kiongozi kuanzia akiwa darasa la nne.

Winnie studied in a normal public school and loved being a leader since she was in grade four.

"Nilitamani kujihusisha na kila shughuli shuleni. Nikiwa darasa la tano, ubalozi wa Ubelgiji ulitoa mafunzo ya uelimishaji rika kwa miaka miwili kwa wanafunzi wa darasa la nne na la tano. Baada ya hapo, wanafunzi hawa walitakiwa kuwaelimisha wanafunzi wenzao shuleni.

“I always wanted to be part of every activity at school. In grade five, the Belgian council had a two year peer to peer training programme for grade four & five students who would then train other students at their schools. I didn’t go to school on the day pupils were chosen and when I found out that others were going I felt so bad and begged my teacher to go as well. I remember when I was in grade six I got the chance to teach grade seven about peer and sexual education. It felt so good teaching older children”

Siku wanafunzi wanachaguliwa, sikwenda shule na nilivyojua wenzangu wanaenda kwenye mafunzo nilimuomba sana mwalimu wangu ili nipate nafasi ya kwenda. Nakumbuka nikiwa la sita nilipata fursa ya kuwapa wanafunzi wa darasa la saba elimu ya kijinsia na uelimishaji rika. Nilijisikia vizuri sana kuelimisha watoto wakubwa zaidi yangu."

Mwanzo hakua na ujasiri wa kuzungumza mbele ya watu. "Kuna wakati nilikua siwezi kusimama na kuzungumza mbele ya watu na Kiingereza kilikua kinanipa shida! Nikiwa shule ya msingi tulikuwa na semina kikanda. Wanafunzi kutoka shule binafsi walikua na ujasiri wa kuzungumza mbele ya watu na nilitamani sana niweze kuongea kama wao."

Kuhusu usomaji wa vitabu "Nilikuaga sisomi vitabu mpaka nilipokutana na Masasi. Alinihamasisha sana nianze kusoma vitabu. Nakumbuka aliniambia 'watu wenye akili wanasoma vitabu ili wapate kujua mambo mengi.' Kwa hiyo nikaanza kusoma. Nilisoma vitabu vya Richard Branson na kuhusu wanafalsafa maarufu. Mwanzo nilipata shida sana na sikuona umuhimu wa kusoma kuhusu hawa watu wa zamani. Lakini baadae nilizoea na sasa hivi napenda sana kusoma vitabu."

Anapenda sana teknolojia "Hatukuwa na kompyuta nyumbani lakini kulikuwa na internet café karibu na kituo cha basi hivyo kila siku baada ya shule ningetumia saa moja mtandaoni. Nilijitahidi kutunza fedha kidogo kila siku ili niende internet café.” Fursa ilijitokeza nikiwa kidato cha tatu Apps & Girls walipoanza kuja shuleni kutoa mafunzo ya kompyuta kwa wasichana. Tulijifunza kutumia teknolojia ili kutatua matatizo yaliyopo katika jamii.

She wasn’t always confident speaking in front of people. “There was a time I could not stand and talk in front of an audience and English was a headache! I remember in primary we had regional seminars and students from private schools could talk in front of people and I felt I should be able to speak like that too.”

On Books and Reading “I never used to read books until I met this guy called Masasi who inspired me to start reading books. He told me ‘smart people read books so that they can know a lot of things.’ So I started reading. I read Richard Branson and about all these famous philosophers. At first I didn’t like it; it felt like torture. Why should I read about these old people? But then I got used to it and I fell in love with reading.”

Her love for technology “We didn’t have a computer at home but there was an internet café at the bus stop on the way home. Every day after school, I would browse the internet for an hour. No matter what, I always saved a bit of money to go to the internet café.” My chance came when I was in form three and Apps & Girls started coming to school to train girls about computers. In the trainings we were taught how to address problems in the society using technology.

So why did you decide to help women with Fistula? I used to hear announcements about fistula in the bus on my way to school. So I asked my friend if she knew anything about it but she didn’t. There was a girl in our neighbourhood who got married but was returned home after 3 months. People said it was because she was a bed wetter. We later learned that she actually had fistula. Her family didn’t want people to know so they took her to the village and in the end the whole family left because the whole neighbourhood was talking about it. I never heard from her again but I realized then that fistula is a real problem but people do not like to talk about it. I wanted to change this and so FanikishaMama was born.

How does FanikishaMaMa work? We work with fistula patients at Muhimbili hospital. We meet and talk to the women about what they would like. Some would like to start businesses, others want to take their children to school and others want to study. Everyone has different dreams. We estimate how much it would cost to make their dreams come true and share their stories on our website so people can donate to make their dreams come true. There are volunteers who teach them things like handicrafts when they are still in the hospital. We then buy them the materials they need to start their businesses and they go home with a bit of money as well. The hospital keeps records of them and after three to six months, we follow up to see how every woman is doing.

How many people do you have on your team? Seven, three of them are doctors. I can’t talk to some women because I’m young and they don’t want to open up to me so the doctors talk to them.

The future she sees; I want to see FanikishaMama go far and do an amazing job like the Fistula Foundation. Someday I will have to leave it in the hands of people since I am going to study. But I want it to reach far before I leave. This is where my heart is.

Her advice to other children; Looking back, my life is very different now. I see myself as an entrepreneur. When I go to different schools, people know me and are inspired. The most important thing is that you don’t give up and you need to know how to prioritize your things. I had school but I was still doing this. Everything takes time. Most students want to do something and succeed immediately. They want to do something today and get results tomorrow. It doesn’t work like that.

Other Facts About Winnie She is the last born in a family of three and has a twin brother. She is an ambassador for Apps & Girls and inspires girls in different schools to take an interest in technology. She has even talked to over 100 university students to inspire them to embrace technology. In 2014 Winnie competed with 21 girls from different schools and won first prize for FanikishaMama.

Nilikua nasikia matangazo kuhusu fistula nikiwa naelekea shuleni lakini nilipomuuliza rafiki yangu kama anafahamu chochote kuhusu fistula, aliniambia hafahamu. Nakumbuka kulikuwa na msichana mmoja mtaani kwetu ambae alirudishwa nyumbani miezi 3 baada ya kuolewa. Watu walisema ni kwa sababu alikuwa kikojozi lakini baadaye tuligundua kwamba alikuwa na fistula. Ndugu zake hawakutaka watu wajue kwa hiyo wakampeleka kijijini na mwisho familia nzima iliondoka kwasababu mtaa mzima walikuwa wakizungumzia suala hilo. Sijawahi kumsikia tena lakini niligundua kuwa fistula ni tatizo kubwa na watu hawapendi kulizungumzia. Nilitaka kubadili hali hii ndipo FanikishaMama ikazaliwa.

FanikishaMama inafanyaje kazi? Tunafanya kazi na wagonjwa wa fistula waliyopo hospitali ya Muhimbili. Tunazungumza na wanawake hawa kuhusu mambo ambayo wangependa kufanya. Baadhi yao wangependa kuanzisha biashara, wengine wanataka kusomesha watoto wao na wengine wanatamani kusoma. Kila mmoja wao ana ndoto tofauti. Tunakadiria kiasi cha fedha kinachoweza kuwasaidia watimize ndoto zao kisha tunaweka maelezo yao kwenye tovuti yetu ili watu waweze kuchangia na kutimiza ndoto hizi. Pia kuna watu waliojitolea kuwafundisha kazi mbalimbali za mikono wakiwa hospitalini. Baada ya hapo tunawanunulia vitu watakavyohitaji kuanzisha biashara na kuwapa kiasi kidogo cha

Anachokitazamia mbeleni; Nataka FanikishaMama ifike mbali na kufanya kazi nzuri kama Fistula Foundation. Ipo siku itabidi niiache mikononi mwa watu kwasababu naenda kusoma. Lakini natamani tuifikishe mbali kabla sijaondoka. Naipenda sana FanikishaMama.

Ushauri wake kwa watoto wengine; Sasa hivi maisha yangu yamebadilika sana. Najiona kama mjasiriamali. Nikienda shule mbalimbali, watu wananifahamu na ninawahamasisha. Jambo muhimu kuliko vyote ni kutokuacha jitihada, kujua jinsi ya kupanga muda wako na mambo yanayohitaji kipaumbele. Nilikuwa najishughulisha na FanikishaMama pamoja na kuwa nilikuwa nasoma. Kila kitu huhitaji muda. Wanafunzi wengi wanataka wapate mafanikio ya papo kwa hapo. Wanataka kufanya kitu leo na kuona mafanikio kesho. Hio haiwezekani; mafanikio huhutaji muda.

Mambo mengine kuhusu Winnie Ni mtoto wa mwisho kati ya watatu na ana pacha wa kiume. Ni balozi wa Apps & Girls na huwahamasisha wasichana wa shule mbalimbali kupenda teknolojia. Aliwahi kuongea na zaidi ya wanafunzi 100 wa chuo kikuu ili kuwahamasisha waikumbatie teknolojia. Mwaka 2014 Winnie alishiriki katika shindano na wasichana 21 kutoka shule mbalimbali na FanikishaMama ilishinda nafasi ya kwanza.

Parenting in the age of the television

There is no denying that technology and the growth of communication and media channels has affected how we parent our children. Televisions, radios, phones, computers, the internet, games; all impact how we raise children. In towns, the television is a major part of the everyday lives of families. Children can spend all day watching all their favorite shows and at times even refuse to eat lest they miss something on TV. Most of us are familiar with the remote control wars that erupt when our children cannot agree on what to watch. Children need ample time with their parents, interaction with their peers and time for creative play, all of which will help them develop the higher-level thinking parts of the brain. So although we will not tell you to omit TVs from their lives, try guiding and minimizing TV time using some of the tips below and you could be amazed by the creativity and positivity that will emerge.

Avoid wars about favorite shows by being a step ahead of your child. Try to know which children’s shows are on, even from other parents, and watch them beforehand so that you understand the content. Look for shows with educational and moral value. If you are satisfied that a show is appropriate, you can suggest that you watch the show together rather than tell your child they can’t watch something else.

This does not have to be an everyday routine, that’s impractical. However, if your child is still young and is only developing an interest in television, watching shows with them will help shape what they are interested in watching, even when you are not nearby. You will also help your child learn from the shows by emphasizing on all the subtle lessons that children’s shows have.

o TVs in the bedroom! Or computers for that matter (sorry kids!). Having these in your child’s bedroom makes monitoring what they watch difficult. It also increases their TV time and as a result your child will become physically inactive and lack proper sleep particularly if they are tempted to stare at their screens well into the night. Keep the television and computer in common living areas.

Try getting the whole family to not watch TV for a week. The next time your cable subscription runs out, you could break for a week, or a few days. Use this time as family time so that you can interact with your children, and they can interact with each other. You might have to block certain channels as well. However, keep in mind that your children will grow and find other places to watch TV the channels you have painstakingly blocked.

Remember; not everything on TV is bad, there are programmes that are interesting and can help your child learn, in both English and Kiswahili. It has been recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics that children over 2 years can watch about two hours (and no more!) of television each day. Teach your children to use this time well and then do other, more interactive activities.

Watoto wanaweza kushinda wakiangalia vipindi wanavyovipenda na wakati mwingine hata kukataa wasije kupitwa na vipindi vyao. Si ajabu kuona watoto wanagombana pindi wanaposhindwa kukubaliana waangalie kipindi gani. Watoto wanahitaji muda wa kutosha na wazazi wao, kujichanganya na wenzao na michezo yenye kutumia ubunifu ili kuongeza uwezo wao wa kufikiri. Hatusemi uwanyime watoto kuangalia luninga kabisa, ila ni muhimu kuwaelekeza vipindi vya kuangalia na kuhakikisha hawaangalii kwa muda mwingi mno. Utafurahia ubunifu na vipaji watakavyoonyesha wasipotumia muda wao mwingi kuangalia luninga.

Every day after school, Ally and his friends would go for extra tuition classes. Their teacher was supposed to teach them three subjects daily but he only taught them one subject a day.

Kila siku baada ya shule, Ally na marafiki zake walikua na masomo ya ziada. Mwalimu wao alikua akiwafundisha somo moja tu kwa siku. Ally na wenzake hawakufurahia suala hili kwa sababu wazazi wao walikua wamelipia ya masomo matatu kwa siku.

Ally and his friends were not happy about this. After all, their parents had paid for these extra classes!

Ally had heard of the National Child Helpline at school, where children can report whenever their rights are violated by calling the number 116.

He called the helpline and spoke to a counsellor about his teacher.

He agreed that this was true and explained that it was because he had been sitting for his University Exams. The counsellor explained that even though it was good for him to continue learning, it was also important for him to teach the children so that they could also learn Mshauri alimueleza kuwa ingawa ni vizuri kuwa anaendelea kusoma, ni muhimu aendelee kuwafundisha watoto.

He was also responsible for informing them of any changes in his schedule since they have the right to know. Alimkumbusha pia wajibu wake wa kuwapa watoto taarifa ya mabadiliko yoyote katika ratiba yake kwani wana haki ya kufahamu mapema.

Hyperion upo nchini marekani Kaskazini mwa California lakini watu wachache sana wanafahamu eneo lake halisi ili kuulinda mti huu na mazingira yake dhidi ya uharibifu wa binadamu. Hyperion unakadiriwa kuwa na miaka 700-800.

The tallest known tree in the world is called Hyperion and is about 115.6 m tall. It is found in Northern California, U.S.A but very few people know its exact location to protect it and its ecosystem from human disruption. Hyperion is estimated to be 700–800 years old.

Hata usipofanyiwa sherehe, usipolishwa keki au kupewa zawadi, bado utaikumbuka hiyo siku na mara nyingi huwa na furaha. Juni 16 ni siku nyingine kila mwaka kwa ajili yetu sisi watoto wa Afrika. Mwaka 1976 kule Afrika Kusini, maelfu ya wanafunzi waliandamana kupinga elimu duni waliyokuwa wanapewa na pia kudai haki yao ya kufundishwa kwa lugha yao badala ya lugha ngeni ya wakoloni. Maandamano yalianza kwa utulivu asubuhi ya Juni 16 ambapo wanafunzi wa shule mbalimbali walikutana na kuanza kuandamana huku wakiimba na kubeba mabango. Njiani, walikuta barabara imefungwa na polisi ili kuwazuia wasiandamane.

SIKU YAKO MTOTO WA AFRIKA!! What day of the year is so special for you? For most of us it is our birthdays. Even if we will not have a party, cake or gifts, we still remember that day and feel happy. There is another special day; June 16 is another day every year for us: the African children. Back in 1976 in South Africa, thousands of students marched in the streets protesting against the low quality of education that they received and demanding to be taught in their own language instead of the foreign language of the colonialists. The marching started peacefully on the morning of June 16 when children from different schools met and started marching while singing and carrying posters. On their way they found that the police had blocked the road to stop the students from marching.


A DAY FOR YOU, CHILD OF AFRICA!!! Polisi waliwaamuru wanafunzi watawanyike na baada ya wanafunzi kukataa, polisi waliwafyatulia risasi, mabomu ya machozi pamoja na kuwaachia mbwa wao wawavamie wanafunzi. Wanafunzi nao hawakukubali kushindwa, walipambana na polisi pamoja na mbwa wao kwa kuwarushia mawe. Mapambano haya yaliendelea kwa takribani wiki mbili. Mamia ya wanafunzi walipoteza maisha na maelfu kujeruhiwa. Kuwakumbuka wale waliopoteza uhai wao pamoja na ujasiri wa wote walioshiriki, tarehe 16 Juni ilichaguliwa na Umoja wa Afrika kuwa Siku ya Mtoto wa Afrika na huadhimishwa kila mwaka tangu 1991. Ni siku ya kuangalia maisha ya sasa ya mtoto wa Afrika na kupigania haki za watoto hasa wale wenye matatizo mbalimbali na wanaoishi katika mazingira magumu. Kwa wewe mtoto wa Afrika, elewa kwamba wewe ni wa thamani sana kwa wazazi wako, ndugu, marafiki na jamii nzima. Unastahili kupewa haki zako zote, unastahili kupendwa na kuishi maisha mazuri. Hivyo jiamini kwamba una mchango hapa duniani ndio maana Mungu amekupa zawadi ya uhai.

The police ordered the students to disperse and after refusing to do so, they fired their guns at the students, let their dogs go after them and used teargas as well. The students did not surrender without a fight. They threw stones at the police and their dogs. This went on for almost two weeks! Hundreds of students lost their lives and thousands were injured. To honor the memory of those killed and the courage of all those who marched, the Day of the African Child has been celebrated on 16 June every year since 1991, when it was first started by the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union). It is a day to look at the current life of the African child, to fight for the rights of children especially those with different problems as well as those living in a harsh environment. To you dear African child, know that you are very special to your parents, relatives, friends, and the whole community. You deserve to get all your rights, you deserve to be loved and to live a good life. Therefore believe that you have a contribution and purpose in this world that is why God gave you the gift of life.

Once upon a time there was a boy named Tyson and his dog called Jack. Jack was not like any other dog, Jack was able to talk to people and communicate with other animals. One day Tyson asked Jack a question. ‘Jack, what is the difference between you and your friend Butch?’ Jack answered, ‘Well, I can talk’ so Tyson said ‘Okay’ and went to school. Jack decided to follow Tyson to school and found him with his friends discussing their project. Tyson saw Jack in the playground behind the school pushing the swing. Tyson went outside and asked Jack, ‘What are you doing here?’and Jack responded ‘I want to play with you.’ ‘Well, keep quiet and don't talk.’ said Tyson. 'This is not a pleasant place for you, you better go home,' he continued. Ms Eritha, the principal saw Jack, and called Tyson to her office. Ms. Eritha asked, “Tyson why did you bring your dog to school?' 'But Ms.. My dog just followed me,' replied Tyson. The principal was upset and told him to take Jack home. Suddenly, the fire alarm went off, there was a fire in the school! It was in the science laboratory and Jack was the only one who detected the smoke. Jack zoomed around the school corridor and found the fire extinguisher, he put his paw on the handle and put out the fire! Jack had saved the day! Ms. Eritha was very thankful and let Jack go stay at the school for that afternoon.

Mkuu wa shule, Bi Eritha, alipomuona Jack alimuita Tyson ofisini kwake. "Tyson kwa nini umemleta mbwa wako shuleni?" aliuliza Bi Eritha. "Amenifuata tu bila mimi kujua," alijitetea Tyson. Mwalimu mkuu alikasirika sana na kumwambia Tyson amrudishe Jack nyumbani. Ghafla, king'ora kilisikika, shule ilikua inaungua! Maabara ya shule ilikua imewaka moto na Jack peke yake ndiye aliyeweza kuusikia moshi ulikokua unatoka. Jack alikimbia haraka na kuwahi kizima moto na kuuzima moto. Bi. Our buses provide a nice transport system to and from home. Our school has both boarding and day scholars. We have girls and boys dormitories. My school is called Green Acres Primary. It is in Mbezi beach, Africana, Kinondon Disrict, Dar es Salaam Region.

Shule yangu inaitwa Green Acres. Ipo Mbezi beach Africana, Wilaya ya Kinondoni, Mkoa wa Dar es Salaam. Tunavaa sare za shule kuanzia Jumatatu hadi Alhamisi. Siku ya Ijumaa, baadhi ya wanafunzi wanavaa nguo za michezo na wanafunzi waliyobaki wanavaa sare zao za skauti.

My school has more than 30 teachers, 600 pupils, and 60 non-teaching staff. We had the best grade seven of 2015 whose brilliant top two candidates were Mvano Michael and Irene Komba.

Shule yetu ina waalimu zaidi ya 30, wanafunzi 600, na wafanyakazi wengine 60. Tulifaulu vizuri mtihani wa darasa la saba kwa mwaka 2015 na wanafunzi bora wawili walikuwa Mvano Michael na Irene Komba.
