If you opt to collect your tickets, they can be picked up from the box office from 7 July and up to two hours before the show, or at the venue from 30 mins before the show. To locate the box office see the map on page 59.

Please arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before the performance and allow 15 minutes for traffic and parking. Late admission is not guaranteed but will be offered if possible.

Welcome to the 41st Kilkenny Arts Festival! Building on forty years of extraordinary creative moments, my first Festival as Director focuses on artistic residencies, bespoke collaborations and surprise happenings in a programme which leaves behind conventional artform boundaries. So many artists prefer not to define their work as classical or contemporary, jazz or folk, poetry or song, theatre or dance, and we’re taking the same approach. Let the art speak for itself... Kilkenny is a city and a Festival where the classical, traditional and contemporary meet. So we lead this year with two special projects in contrasting musical fields: Beethoven Quest is an epic journey through the great composer’s string quartets and piano concertos, while in the Marble City Sessions, co-curated with Martin Hayes, we gather extraordinary musicians from America and Ireland for a week of collaborations climaxing in our Festival Finale. Our artists in residence include – among many others – The Gloaming, the Heath Quartet, jazz guitar master Bill Frisell, former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins, progressive folk hero Sam Amidon, stargaze ensemble from Berlin and Shakespeare’s Globe, who return with a brand-new production of Much Ado About Nothing in Castle Yard. Reimagining another Shakespearean classic, we have commissioned Irish Modern Dance Theatre to create Lear Project, starring the legendary Valda Setterfield. We’re proud to present the first Irish visits of leading international artists including the Early Opera Company (UK), the Basiani Ensemble (Georgia) and Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (Italy). Performance poet Kate Tempest stages the Irish premiere of her latest work, while Architects of Air return to Castle Park with the Irish debut of their new luminarium, Pentalum. And this year we’re showcasing not only Kilkenny’s magnificent buildings but also the city’s historic gardens, in a series of “secret” pop-up afternoon concerts.

THE COMPLETE STRING QUARTETS

The Heath Quartet UK Beethoven wrote string quartets throughout his working life. The marvellous early quartets already showed a master at work, while the mid-period Razumovsky Quartets met with great popular success. In the composer’s last years, when he was profoundly deaf, his extraordinary sequence of late quartets astonished critics and audiences; on hearing the Fourteenth Quartet (op. 131) Schubert was heard to remark, ‘After this, what is left for us to write?’ The public was slower to embrace them, but in the intervening two centuries opinion has changed and the late quartets are now ranked among the greatest achievements in all of music. Formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2002, The Heath Quartet has emerged as one of the most dynamic and acclaimed voices on the international chamber music scene. Fellows at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the ensemble has appeared at major venues and festivals across Europe. Coming directly from an appearance at the 2014 BBC Proms in London, the quartet will take up residence in Kilkenny to scale the heights of the complete Beethoven cycle over ten lunchtime concerts. St John’s Priory offers a beautifully intimate setting for this unique Festival journey through masterworks that express the richness of the human spirit.

Camerata Ireland brings together leading Irish musicians to celebrate the depth of musical talent on this island. Founded and led by pianist and conductor Barry Douglas, the ensemble has toured widely, gaining an international reputation for excellence, not least for its recordings of Beethoven’s piano concertos. Following acclaimed tours to Russia, North America and China, and fresh from Douglas’ appearance at the BBC Proms this summer with Valery Gergiev and the LSO, they return to Kilkenny with an ambitious double programme featuring the composer’s five piano concertos. These marvellous works trace the rapid arc of Beethoven’s development, from promising young pianist and composer to turbulent grand master. The first two concertos, classical in style, were great popular successes, while with Concerto no. 3 Beethoven moved further from the influence of Mozart and forged something richly expressive and new. The fourth concerto deepened the relationship between orchestra and pianist, while the final concerto, known as the ‘Emperor’ for its powerful themes and heroic tone, ranks among the composer’s greatest achievements.

Over the last two years, a production by the worldrenowned Shakespeare’s Globe has become one of the must-see highlights of the Festival. In their only Irish appearances, the company has brought two sold-out productions to Kilkenny and transformed the magnificent 18th-century Castle Yard into the finest venue in Ireland for open-air theatre, performing on a recreated Elizabethan ‘Booth Stage’ with tiered seating. This year we’re delighted to welcome them back as one of our resident ensembles with a brandnew production of one of Shakespeare’s liveliest comedies, Much Ado About Nothing. Claudio and Benedick are best friends with contrasting attitudes to love. While Claudio is in love with Hero, Benedick vows never to marry and engages in a “merry war” of words with Beatrice. But when the malcontent Don John tricks Claudio and tries to ruin Hero’s reputation, Benedick finds himself challenged to kill his best friend. Driven by a pair of lovers in denial, Much Ado About Nothing is a masterpiece of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, literature’s wittiest bickering couple. Lear Project Directed by John Scott Designed by Eric Würtz Composed by James Everest In a world premiere commissioned by Kilkenny Arts Festival, Irish Modern Dance Theatre reimagines Shakespeare’s King Lear. Choreographer John Scott and an international cast explore themes of parental love, old age, loss of power, fear of death, personal transformation and enlightenment. The title role is taken by a legend of the New York modern dance scene: Valda Setterfield, one of the original members of the seminal Judson Church movement and a long-time collaborator of Merce Cunningham and her husband, choreographer David Gordon. The performers portraying Lear’s children include Kévin Coquelard (star of the Paris Conservatoire) and Ryan O’Neill (Ponydance and Junk Ensemble). Lear Project promises to be a deeply personal, playful and profoundly moving new work. John Scott’s Irish Modern Dance Theatre is a pioneering and diverse ensemble that brings together Cunningham dancers with African torture survivors. The Marble City Sessions In a unique cross-genre project co-curated with the inspirational Martin Hayes, Kilkenny Arts Festival 2014 brings together some of the finest musicians from the USA and Ireland as artists in residence for a week of one-off collaborations ranging across traditional, jazz, contemporary, folk, Americana and beyond. Martin writes, “We’re bringing together in Kilkenny a collective of aesthetically compatible musicians and friends, and I’m looking forward to lots of new artistic connections and spontaneous musical moments.” At the heart of the Marble City Sessions is the extraordinary new Irish-music group The Gloaming. In addition to their St Canice’s performance on 13 August, each member of the group combines with other leading musicians for a series of unique concerts. Also in residence for the Sessions are some of America’s finest musicians, including jazz guitar legend Bill Frisell, cult progressive folk singer/instrumentalist Sam Amidon, crack clarinettist Doug Wieselman, Old Time fiddler Cleek Schrey, composer/hardanger player Dan Trueman and peerless percussive dancer Nic Gareiss.

Pipes, hardanger fiddle and harmonium coalesce to shape an atmospheric set that speaks … of the space and time inherent in traditional music The Irish Times Ghost Trio brings together three extraordinarily talented musicians – All-Ireland uilleann pipes champion Ivan Goff, sean nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird and fiddler Cleek Schrey – for a groundbreaking experiment in voice, pipes and strings. Dispensing with the chord progressions used in modern forms of Western music, Ghost Trio recovers something more fundamental: the ancient modal sounds buried in Irish and Appalachian tunes. Schrey’s hardanger fiddle fuses Irish songs with the Old Time music of his native Virginia, while Goff coaxes free-ranging sounds from the uilleann pipes and Ó Lionáird layers his celebrated vocals over a harmonium to create a soundscape at once ancient yet utterly fresh. It’s been three years since The Gloaming announced their arrival with a breathtaking debut at the National Concert Hall, and since then they’ve won widespread acclaim both for the virtuosity of their playing and for their innovative fusion of musical styles. Dubliner Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh is both an established solo artist and a member of several acclaimed ensembles, including The Gloaming and This is How we Fly, while Dan Trueman is an American composer and electronic musician who co-founded the Princeton Laptop Orchestra, the first ensemble of its kind, and whose compositions explore the connections between traditional dance music and machines.

But the duo share a passion for the hardanger fiddle, the beautiful Norwegian instrument that brings a haunting quality to the folk dances for which it was designed, and their partnership is taking traditional airs in new directions, conjuring warm, wistful notes from the strings. This is exquisite music, and in the intimate space of Rothe House, the world premiere of their debut album Laghdú is an event to savour.

Doug Wieselman USA From Water From Handel to Simon and Garfunkel, musicians have often drawn inspiration from water, but Doug Wieselman has taken the concept a step further. A vital force on the New York music scene for years, collaborating with everyone from Antony and the Johnsons to Lou Reed, the clarinettist has released an ambitious solo album based around the melodies he hears beneath the gurgle and flow of rivers, oceans and lakes. Mixing vintage clarinets with live looping, Wieselman builds rich layers of sound that conjure everything from a train travelling along the Hudson River to the ocean lapping on a California beach. The result is an unclassifiable blend of ambient, classical and jazz that has had critics reaching for superlatives. On the terrace of the River Court Hotel, overlooking the River Nore, this live performance of From Water stages a beguiling duet between water and the music it inspired.

Thomas Bartlett & Friends USA This Is How We Fly Ireland/Sweden/USA Two members of The Gloaming – Thomas Bartlett and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh – showcase other musical projects in this exciting double bill. Few pianists and songwriters command such admiration that they can enlist Norah Jones, Martha Wainright and Glen Hansard as backing singers, but Thomas Bartlett is a rare talent. Equally at home in pop, classical or traditional, he released a reinterpretation of the Footloose soundtrack that went viral in 2008, while his exquisite piano work as a member of The

Gloaming is a key element of the group’s distinctive sound. As ‘Doveman’ he has released three solo albums combining gorgeous melodies with hushed vocals. This evening Bartlett is joined by special guests for a unique performance mixing progressive folk and jazz-inflected rhythms with the pop sensibilities of his Doveman incarnation. A collaboration between fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and jazz clarinettist Seán Mac Erlaine already sounds an intriguing proposition, but throw in American hard shoe

dancer Nic Gareiss and Swedish percussionist Petter Berndalen and the results are something quite special. The search for common ground between this eclectic quartet has yielded a rich crop of ideas and a debut album that sounds like nothing else. This is How we Fly play everything from Irish fiddle tunes to polskas from Berndalen’s native Sweden. This year Architects of Air return to Kilkenny with the Irish debut of their latest luminarium. A hymn to the beauty of geometry, Pentalum features a breathtaking central dome and a maze of magical spaces filled with enchanting light effects. Polyphony (the weaving together of different vocal lines), originated in what is now modern day Georgia, and the Basiani Ensemble is spearheading a revival of this rich vocal tradition. Formed out of the Tbilisi Holy Trinity Cathedral Church Choir, Basiani Ensemble brings together some of the finest choral singers in Georgia to uncover the extraordinary musical heritage of the region. Performing a capella or accompanied by simple stringed instruments familiar to the ancient Greeks, the ensemble embraces everything from twelfth-century hymns to exuberant dance tunes and rousing table songs like ‘Chakrulo’ (one of the pieces included on the Voyager spacecraft). Since forming in 2000 they have performed in the world’s most prestigious concert halls, and St Canice’s provides the perfect venue for their mesmerising sound.

He takes the flavours of the global and the village to stir them into the urban RootsWorld It’s more than 25 years since Hothouse Flowers’ performance during the interval of the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest introduced the world to the unrivalled musicianship of Liam Ó Maonlaí. Since the Flowers’ last album in 2004, Ó Maonlaí has taken on a startling range of projects, co-creating acclaimed contemporary dance show Rian, recording solo albums of both self-penned and traditional songs, and completing a 3,000-mile musical pilgrimage to Mali where he played to an audience of Tuareg near Timbuktu. One of his most audacious projects is a collaboration with Irish glass artist Róisín de Buitléar. Working with de Buitléar’s glass instruments (see page 50), Ó Maonlaí has created an Irish incantation in the sean nós style, and this extraordinary piece forms part of tonight’s concert. Performing a mix of traditional songs and his own folk-rock compositions, Ó Maonlaí showcases his peerless vocals in the company of fellow Flower Peter O’Toole. This is an over-18 event.

One of Europe’s most distinguished Baroque musicians, Malcolm Proud has a unique association with Kilkenny Arts Festival, having performed at the first Festival in 1974 and on many occasions since, whether solo or with ensembles like the Irish Baroque Orchestra and his own Camerata Kilkenny. This year he performs in the Cathedral Church of St Canice, where he is organist, with a programme marking the 300th anniversary of the birth of CPE Bach. The concert also features JS Bach’s exalted Fuge über das Magnificat and rare gems from the France of Louis XIV: two plainchant settings for choir and organ by Nicolas de Grigny.

Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Conor O’Callaghan & Peter Sirr Ireland This intimate event, presented in association with Gallery Press, showcases the work of three leading Irish poets. Long celebrated for her unique poetic vision, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin has won many awards, including the International Griffin Poetry Prize (for her new collection The Sun-Fish) and the Patrick Kavanagh Award, a distinction she shares with Conor O’Callaghan, whose latest book, The Sun King, features both an elegy for the Celtic Tiger and couplets inspired by Twitter. Peter Sirr won the Patrick Kavanagh Award at the age of 22 and went on to receive the O’Shaughnessy Award. Theatre of War and Peace: Inside the UN Security Council Richard Ryan Ireland Many of the greatest crises of the post-war period have played out in the crucible of the United Nations Security Council, the institution at the heart of the UN system of global governance. From the Cuban Missile Crisis to the intense negotiations and debates preceding the Iraq War, the Council and its often secretive procedures have provided a platform for greatpower politics amid the search to control and resolve major conflicts.

It is a huge challenge for any small state to seek and achieve election to the Security Council, and, once there, to make an impact in the glare of world scrutiny. Since Ireland joined the UN in 1955 it has served three times on the Council, most recently in 2001-2. Our Ambassador to the UN from 1998 to 2005, Richard Ryan, who was President of the Council in the aftermath of 9/11, reveals some of the inner dynamics of the Council and describes the working out of big-power tensions during this tumultuous period.

The Hubert Butler Annual Lecture was established in 2007 to honour the Kilkenny writer, historian and broadcaster whose remarkable consistency of vision and clarity of mind made him unique among essayists and whose work evinced an unsurpassed moral, political and literary integrity. Based on a tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the pastoral opera Acis and Galatea – about the sea nymph Galatea and her shepherd lover Acis – is the work of the greatest artists in Georgian London. Written by Handel with a libretto by John Gay and contributions from Alexander Pope, it remains the most popular of Handel’s dramatic works, packed with heartbreaking melodies and a powerful second act in which the lovers are threatened by the one-eyed giant Polyphemus. One of the leading Baroque conductors in Europe, Christian Curnyn brings his Early Opera Company to Ireland for the first time with a top-flight international

cast. The eponymous lovers are portrayed by two of the brightest rising stars on the international opera scene: Allan Clayton (Acis), now recognised as one of the finest tenors of his generation, and Joélle Harvey (Galatea), whose acclaimed appearances include Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera, the BBC Proms and Carnegie Hall. Founded in 1994 by Christian Curnyn, Early Opera Company is firmly established as one of Britain’s leading early music ensembles, appearing regularly at festivals all over Europe. But contemporary architecture firms are breathing fresh life into some of Ireland’s most iconic buildings with radical new visions and techniques. In this fascinating talk, Niall McCullough traces the history of architectural intervention and explores contemporary approaches to conservation architecture. McCullough is director of McCullough Mulvin Architects, the practice currently undertaking the conversion of St Mary’s Hall in Kilkenny into a museum, and this afternoon’s talk offers a unique insight into the process. In the thousand years or more since its creation, Beowulf – the Anglo-Saxon epic that forms the cornerstone of English literature – has been translated countless times. But Benjamin Bagby believes that the original Old English text holds a magical power that no modern translation can match, and has made it his life’s work to perform it all over the world. Bagby – a specialist in medieval music and performance – first conceived the project in the 1980s and has been refining it ever since, mixing songs with dramatic recital and exquisite harp-playing to bring to life the story of Beowulf, the Geatish warrior who sails to Denmark to save his people from the fearsome monster Grendel. It’s a performance so expressive that it hardly needs surtitles (although they are provided), and his appearance at the Festival is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the poem as it might have been performed in those candlelit Saxon halls. The first word of Beowulf is hwaet! (listen!). In Bagby’s hands it’s impossible to do anything else.

Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies may have ensured him lasting fame, but Beethoven’s settings of Irish folk songs have been strangely overlooked. One reason may be that some of the texts added to Beethoven’s arrangements didn’t match the quality of the musical settings. But in recent years the late baritone Tomás Ó Súilleabháin set out to put that right, compiling a new edition of Beethoven’s settings - with texts taken from Thomas Moore, Robert Burns and others - which has just been published by DIT Conservatory of Music. Sadly Ó Súilleabháin died before his edition was published, but tonight’s concert, featuring mezzo-soprano Alison Browner, tenor Eamonn Mulhall and friends, offers a chance to hear Beethoven’s settings newly matched with these classic texts.

Since then the biography has enjoyed a new lease of life, regularly outselling fiction at the top of the charts. But what makes a good historical biography, and how do writers go about approaching one? This special event brings together two of the most acclaimed biographers working today to examine the art of writing lives. Lady Antonia has published a string of acclaimed works, including biographies of Cromwell, Charles II and Marie Antoinette, while Roy Foster’s twovolume life of WB Yeats was hailed as a “masterclass in biography” (Colm Tóibín) and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Historic Irish Demesnes The turbulent history of great Irish houses and castles has taken several new turns in the last century, as they withstood or succumbed to a succession of upheavals, but the fate of their demesnes – the estate lands that accompanied them – has often been quite different. While some big houses survived and even thrived – whether as historic attractions or as hotels and spas – many demesnes were carved up and redistributed and today are known only from maps. In Kilkenny, the great Ormonde demesne has experienced mixed fortunes, dwindling over the years before gradually being restored and renewed by the Office of Public Works. In this fascinating talk, award-winning writer and historian Thomas Pakenham explores the rich history and uncertain future of the great Irish demesnes. A historian (author of classic works The Year of Liberty and The Scramble for Africa), custodian of Tullynally Castle in Westmeath, and a leading authority on trees, Pakenham is uniquely placed to examine the demesne from all angles, and this talk promises fresh insights into the lands that for centuries have been such an unmistakeable feature of the Irish landscape.

My Brightest Diamond USA There are few corners of the musical spectrum where Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) hasn’t made herself at home. Founded by conductor André de Ridder, stargaze is one of Europe’s most dynamic chamber orchestras. As well as performing as an ensemble, stargaze also devises and commissions a wide range of collaborative projects in the fields of contemporary pop, electronic and classical music, working with artists as varied as Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and Mouse on Mars. For this spectacular gala event, stargaze comes together with Kilkenny Arts Festival to present three radically different projects that explore the possibilities for collaboration between pop and classical music. Part one of the programme sees stargaze join forces with The Dodos – an acclaimed indie band from San Francisco – for the debut performance of a series of fresh orchestral arrangements of The Dodos’ songs, commissioned by Kilkenny Arts Festival, stargaze

and Musicboard Berlin. Also on the bill for the first part is the Irish premiere of a new song cycle by Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer David Lang. Death Speaks takes excerpts from some 32 Schubert songs on the theme of mortality and, loosely translating them into English, sets them to a new score performed by Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and musicians from stargaze. The result is an exquisite sequence of songs both melancholy and profoundly beautiful. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Terry Riley’s In C, one of the founding masterpieces of minimalism. Every performance of In C is different, but this one will be truly unique, as stargaze are joined onstage by many of the Festival’s artists in residence for an epic feat of improvisation and an unforgettable climax to the evening.

Join us in the Parade Tower as Kilkenny County Council Arts Office presents this year’s Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet, launched by former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins (see opposite page). The Broadsheet is a wellestablished publication giving local writers a platform for their work, and this year has seen a record number of submissions. Poems were selected by our guest editor for 2014, Enda Coyle-Greene, a widely published poet and winner of the 2006 Patrick Kavanagh Award, and this year’s Broadsheet is a typically rich mix of established poets and emerging talent. Copies will be available free from John’s Green House, the Festival box office and libraries around the county.

In this fascinating talk, Gerry Murphy takes an affectionate look at the life and times of this most uncompromising of composers, who transcended a wealth of personal troubles to create a body of work of unrivalled beauty and power.

Billy Collins was in his forties before he began to publish his poetry in earnest, but since his collection, The Apple that Astonished Paris, appeared in 1988, he has been feted for his ability to uncover the wonder in the everyday and for a playful sense of humour that emerges in poems such as ‘Lines Composed Over Three Thousand Miles from Tintern Abbey’ or ‘Afternoon with Irish Cows’. Balancing critical and popular success with apparent ease, his recent collections have broken sales records in the US, while he has received the most prestigious awards in American letters, including a term as Poet Laureate of the United States. His public readings are barnstorming performances, and his appearance in the Parade Tower promises to be no exception. In this intimate, informal event, one of Ireland’s most eminent public servants and a key strategist of the Northern Ireland peace process discusses Irish foreign policy in conversation with Festival Director Eugene Downes in the cosy 16th-century surroundings of The Hole in the Wall. In his forty-year career in the Irish Foreign Service, Seán Ó hUiginn served as Ambassador to the United States, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Denmark. As Joint Secretary of the Anglo-Irish Secretariat, and later Second Secretary-General of the Department of Foreign Affairs, he played a central role in the evolution of the peace process for a decade from the late 1980s.

Though Kilkenny is known as a bastion of Anglo-Norman power, the city originally developed under the patronage of the kings of Ossory. During the early medieval period, Ossory developed a famous sculptural tradition, characterised by the erection of beautifully carved high crosses and, in later years, by finely carved and decorated tombs, several of which have been recently restored at St Mary’s Hall. In this fascinating talk Eamonn Kelly explores Kilkenny’s rich sculptural heritage, examining some of the finest carved stonework in the region.

Eamonn P. Kelly is the Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland. He has worked on major exhibitions there as well as in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Spain, Holland, Italy, Japan and Australia. He has lectured extensively in Ireland and abroad and has published on a wide range of archaeological topics, including works on Irish Sheela-na-Gigs and Early Celtic Art in Ireland.

ARCANGELO CORELLI Sonata op. 5, no. 5 in G minor Vivaldi wrote some 40 cantatas in the Neapolitan style, from joyful Arcadian pieces to songs expressing the sorrows of unrequited love. For this afternoon concert, the Irish Baroque Orchestra Chamber Soloists perform two of his best-known cantatas, interspersed with delightful pieces by his fellow Baroque masters. Sung by Cork soprano Deirdre Moynihan, these cantatas display all the elegance and subtlety of Vivaldi’s style. Deirdre Moynihan has performed with many operatic, orchestral, choral and chamber groups throughout Ireland and on the international stage, including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Crash Ensemble and RTÉ ConTempo String Quartet. She has won widespread acclaim for her Baroque performances, and her recording of Vivaldi cantatas on the Naxos label was enthusiastically received earlier this year.

Secret Garden Music Within Kilkenny’s medieval centre lie some of Ireland’s finest historic urban gardens, ranging from the formal splendour of the Castle’s Rose Garden to the secret pleasures of Butler House Gardens, and from the only 17th-century merchant’s garden in Ireland at Rothe House to the secluded lawns of the former Bishop’s Palace in the Cathedral Close, now the Heritage Council. In a new initiative this year, Kilkenny Arts Festival presents Secret Garden Music. The gardens are secret, and so are the artists. Twice each afternoon, these stunning historic gardens will come alive with free pop-up 15-minute concerts. Major international artists in residence at the Festival will be performing – but you have to be there to find out who! These free concerts are suitable for all the family. Duration 15 mins approx. Curator: Josephine Kelliher St Mary’s Church (now St Mary’s Hall) has been at the heart of Kilkenny for over 800 years. Built as a chapel for the castle, it was one of the most prestigious parish churches in medieval Ireland and, over the centuries, has served as a focal point for the city. Deconsecrated in the 1950s, the church was a parish hall for some years, but in 2009 Kilkenny Borough Council embarked on an ambitious project designed to restore it to a central place in city life. For the duration of the Festival, visitors have a unique opportunity to view the interior of the church, stripped back to reveal its true volume, before the next phase of development begins. For Kilkenny Arts Festival, Canadian artist Max Streicher fills the interior with animated clouds suspended from the transept and the nave. The near weightlessness of these forms enables them to rustle and shift, responding with surprising subtlety to the action of air within and without. The writer Alain de Botton describes how the artist John Constable’s cloud studies invite us to concentrate on the distinctive textures and shapes of individual clouds, thereby making natural, everyday skies appear both more available and more intense to us. Similarly, Max Streicher’s cloud sculptures are facsimiles of the real experience, and their installation in St Mary’s Hall an evocation of those images in a place where historically we have been allowed a moment of communal meditation, at a remove from the everyday. Streicher turns things “outside in”: his trembling cloud forms envelope us and ground us in the present.

Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne is both a functioning Catholic church and an exhibition venue. The church houses some permanent artworks, like The Crucifixion of St Peter by Peter Paul Rubens, but in the late 1980s Jesuit priest Pater Friedhelm Mennekes initiated a bold exhibition programme that has turned Sankt Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s into a key player in the contemporary art scene in Germany. A roster of international artists including Christian Boltanski, Jenny Holzer, Martin Creed, Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman and Thomas Bayrle have all been invited to make work that conducts a dialogue between religion, art and current affairs within the space of the church. In this talk Dr Guido Schlimbach, curator at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter, explores the challenges of curating contemporary art in sacred spaces. Art is not seen as an illustration of religion here, but as a free and autonomous means of expression, inviting us to explore our experiences of both faith and doubt.

Circle In The Square The Butler Gallery is delighted to host Ireland’s first exhibition of the New York-based painter Marilyn Lerner. Lerner is an extraordinary artist who has been committed to making abstract geometric paintings for over forty years. Her oil paintings are painted on wooden panels with bevelled edges so that they almost float off the wall. They are highly skillful compositions that articulate her experiences through form, pattern and colour. Geometric abstraction is present among many cultures throughout history, both as decorative motifs and as art pieces themselves. Lerner has travelled extensively through North Africa and South East Asia and these trips have informed her work and made the language of geometry the focus of her work. Marilyn Lerner has exhibited widely, most recently at Terrazo Art Projects in New York. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and her work features in many public and private collections. Lerner lives and works in New York City where she has long taught at the renowned School of Visual Arts.

SOLAS Squared Inspired by Marilyn Lerner’s exhibition at the Butler Gallery, we invite children aged between 5 and 12 years to explore explosive colour, playful pattern and fascinating form at these creative workshops. After learning about the artist’s working process, participants will have a chance to make their own art using a variety of innovative techniques and materials. The meeting point for all participants is at the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny Castle, where they will begin their activities by visiting ‘Circle in The Square’. SOLAS is open to all children aged between 5 and 12 years. Booking is essential.

Róisín de Buitléar & Karen Donnellan Ireland Curator: Angela O’Kelly Resonance brings together two artists whose innovative work explores the sonic qualities of glass. Róisín de Buitléar’s Irish Incantation/Ortha is a series of glass sound objects made to create an Irish incantation, a harmony of voice, object and Irish soul. When played by different hands and breaths of phrasing and rhythm, they become an evolving conversation. Liam Ó Maonlaí will perform with the sound objects in the Set Theatre on Friday 8 August (see page 21). Karen Donnellan’s work is concerned with the intangible essence of things. Informed by her interest in the metaphysical, her work draws on a wide range of media including blown and cast glass, woodturning, sound,

light and film. Working with composer Alma Kelliher, her work explores the boundaries of sound technology and experimental glass art. In Gallery 1, Karen and Róisín have developed an interactive glass sound experience, using objects found in everyday life, that enables visitors to try out their own music.
