Canny canine tricks for perfect portraits Kilkennywoman wins national award for portfolio COMEDIAN WC Fields is credited with the line: ‘Never work with children or animals’, but Kilkenny photographer Maria Dunphy, would disagree with that entirely. The multi-award winning snapper won the Best Pet Portrait Portfolio Award at the Irish Professional Photographers Association 2011 National Photographic Awards. Speaking to The Reporter, Maria explained that she has been photographing dogs professionally for about three years. “I photograph dogs of every size and shape. I have worked with everything from Dogue de Bordeaux, St Bernards and Newfoundlands right down to ďŹ ve eight-week old Bichon Frise puppies and Chihuahuas,â€? she explained. With three Cavalier

King Charles Spaniels and three cats of her own, she is very comfortable around animals. “I like working with them. They are always happy and always have the same temperament. I really enjoy getting the best out of them; their expressions and their head tilts, she said. Her studio, 94 High Street, is geared for getting the best out of animals. “We get attention from them through noises or treats. I have a large repertoire of noises that will attract a dog’s attention including squeaks, miaows, woofs and growls. Maria also photographs cats and any other pets that people would like to have captured on camera. The most unusual pet
she has worked with is a chinchilla. “I haven’t had a spider yet. I might have to run the other direction though,â€? she laughed. Maria’s delightful portraits of Cavalier King Charles Benji, Pomeranian Rocky, Yorkshire Terrier Kelo and Basset Hound Charlie made up her winning portfolio. “ It’s a great honour to achieve the award; there were over 2000 images in the competition and the standard was extremely high,â€? she told The Reporter. Maria also qualiďŹ ed for the ďŹ nal with her portfolios in the Children and Family sections and also picked up one of three Kodak Portrait Awards presented for Child Portrait Photography. Scoil Aireagail students on World Book Day. English teacher Joe Foster is planning to swap parents for students for a day
OMETHING that is part and parcel of us is our name. From the moment we are born or even before it, parents usually have a list of probable names. Many believe that the name we receive is written in the universe waiting for us. Our name is important and special. It identiďŹ es who we are, parents, relatives, it is how our friends identify us. You could not life a normal life without your name. Our birth certiďŹ cate, passport, legal documents, social welfare number, depend on our name. We all love to be called by it. I’m talking to you about our names in the context of setting up businesses for the ďŹ rst time, particularly in the service industry. I worked in advertising for 29 years and it used to amaze me as to how many people did not use their own name when setting up. An example of how people miss out by not using their names is
when for instance a carpenter decides to advertise: Carpenter available to build ďŹ tted kitchens, built-in wardrobes. Phone 08000000. Such an advert does not identify who the person is, simply the service offered and a non-speciďŹ c mobile. Most like to know who they are dealing with. Nowadays, very few will allow people they do not know into their homes. Many like to support people who are starting off, particularly when they are local. I know there are a lot of people unemployed, and hope if they are contemplating starting a new business, they will consider how important advertising is, yes it will cost money, but what is the point of starting a business if nobody knows about it. It is also very important to keep advertising, because it is worth remembering that, people do not look for your number until the day that they need it.

SO WHERE TO FROM HERE? NOW THAT THE PARTYING IS OVER, THE REAL WORK MUST BEGIN. MacDonagh Junctions goes Off The Rails for fashion fun
K
ILKENNY’S most stylish did the county proud when RTE’S ‘Off The Rails’ filmed an episode of the popular show live in MacDonagh Junction. Glamorous presenters Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon took to the stage in front of a large Kilkenny audience, all of whom had applied to RTE for tickets in the weeks leading up to the
event. The recording of the show opened with a question and answer session where audience members received practical advice on issues including dressing to suit body shape, coping with alopecia, the best vpl-free underwear available, at what age a woman should stop wearing mini skirts and at what age she should cut her hair short.
Two lucky sisters Mary Hoban from Callan and Julie Mullins of O’Loughlin Road in the city were plucked from the audience and treated to make overs with make up artist Roisin Derrane and hair stylist Grace Doyle. Roisin and Grace talked the audience through what they were doing and offered plenty of hair and make up tips for the coming season. Two fashion shows were held with stunning models from the acclaimed 1st Option model agency showcasing clothes and jewellery from TK Maxx, Kilkenny Formal Wear, Vintage Emporium and Little Gem among others. A streetstyle section featured six of Kilkenny’s best dressed who competed against each other on the catwalk for a €200 voucher to spend in MacDonagh Junction. Throughout filming goody bags were handed out to those who asked great questions or got involved in the show while a number of audience members received prizes for being well dressed enough to catch the eye of the presenters. The show, which airs over the coming weeks, also offers an insight into model Kate Moss’s style, shows viewers how to wear stripes and the current whimsical look and features a make over on Wexford woman Margaret O’Leary Doyle.

THEATRE UNKOWN Director Jaume Colet-Serra
L
IAM Neeson returns to the thriller genre with ‘Unknown.’ After his disastrous visit to Paris in ‘Taken’ this time the Ballymena man now ďŹ nds himself in trouble in Berlin. He wakes Bourne-like in a German hospital unable to remember how he got there. Things however take an even more bizarre twist when nobody will recognize him - neither his colleagues at the biotechnology conference or his even own wife (January Jones). Another man has taken his place and is using his namec(Aidan Quinn). Now he must evade capture from a cabal of assassins and ďŹ nd out the reason for his circumstances. One unlikely scenario is heaped on the next and if you can switch off your brain this is a thrilling ride. However because the situation becomes more and more implausible the big reveal at the end seemed a little contrived to this reviewer. Playing like a high speed version of ‘Shutter Island’ this convoluted mess manages to just about carry off the proceedings. Director Jaume Colet-Serra who made the scary ‘Orphans’ last year here shows that he has the chops to deliver mainstream hokum. Neeson as always is excellent delivering that ordinary man in danger schtick to perfection although you would have to question his choices of late. How did we get from ‘Schindler’s List’ and ‘Michael Collins’ to these average popcorn icks? It would have been great to see him stretch himself in Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ movie although rumour has it that Daniel Day Lewis is now in frame. Perhaps the reason he was passed over was that Neeson insists on making workaday ďŹ lms like this. There is a ďŹ ne supporting turn from Bruno Ganz who is slumming it too as a Stasis agent in a somewhat dated sub-plot about the cold war. It is great too to see the gorgeous Diane Kruger who has been absent from our screens for quite a while. ‘Mad Men’s’ January Jones makes little impact
as her under written part offers her little to do except look pretty while Quinn is perfunctory at best as the doppelganger. All in all a decent enough way to while away an evening. If you enjoyed ‘Taken’ this offers the same kind of escapist fair. Not one perhaps to spend
your hard earned money at the cinema on but more a DVD rental where it will probably do very well. The day afterwards though you will remember even less than Neeson about what happened the night before. — BY DARRAGH BYRNE

REPORTER’S TOP TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS 1 Fit your CV to ďŹ t the job. Change the details of your CV each time you apply for a job. Most people have two types – one for the manual labour abour jobs and another for the ones in their chosen profession. There is no point including the month you worked in n a cake factory when you are going for a job as Surgeon General. Be careful with being over qualiďŹ ed as much as under qualiďŹ ed. 2 Keep it brief. One page or two pages is the most people will read. If there are thousands usands of applicants don’t put a mission statement in your CV. Leave that for the cover letter and remember school results rarely impress unless you are starting off. Third Level is ďŹ ne, if appropriate, but no employer cares if you got an ‘A’ in maths in your Junior Cert unless you are a maths teacher. 3 Be on time for your interview. If you are not punctual people will not hire you. You should ďŹ nd out where you are going and arrive half an hour early. Then go to a nearby cafe and relax checking the details of your CV so that you will come into the interview room calm and collected and not ustered making excuses about traffic or missed buses.

4 Research, research, research. The three ‘R’s of interviews. Know everything about the company and start off your interview by letting them know you have done some. Looking at websites is the easy way to do this but if you can also ďŹ nd out the name of the human resources person and head of company. A good opener is always “You must be Jane.â€? The fact that you have looked up a bit about them shows that you have an interest in the job. 5 Look the part- Wear the right clothes for the job you are going for. A suit is not always the best — creative
companies and software ďŹ rms often have a casual approach to their staff’s attire. Make sure that you are well groomed and professional profe looking and remem remember — a little aftersh aftershave/perfume goes a long way. 6 Be conďŹ dent. You h have to sell yourself aas if you were a p product on ‘The D Dragon’s Den’ or ‘T ‘The Apprentice’. All in interviews are pure sa salesmanship and you hav have to learn to enjoy talking about yourself in a positive positiv way. Watch that you don’t fall fa into arrogance, as nobody wants to work with someone cocky. Also, the greatest pitfall of any interviewee is to talk in business speak cliche. ‘Team Player’ , ‘Self-motivated’ should be banned from your lexicon. Learn to say these things in a new way. 7 Think about difficult questions. When you are asked a hard question take a second, or three, e, to actually think about what you are going to say. It willll let them know that you ou will think before you act when on the job and that also you are not just reciting something you have spent hours preparing. Overrehearsing hard questions can be a big mistake too, as you don’t want to sound like a robot. Also common sense will dictate that when asked, you don’t see yourself homeless in ďŹ ve years time or that you never say that you crack easily under pressure. 8 Tell your story. Think about when you were successful in your career. An event you organized where everything went to plan or a project which you brought in under budget and on time.
These are really the experiences you want to share with your prospective employers. These are also the ones they want to hear. Make them part of a compelling narrative and have them in the palm of your hand. They will be listening to dozens if not hundreds of interviewees. The human need for stories is the greatest of all and they will remember you if you have one. 9 Ask questions. You must ďŹ nd exactly what the job involves, where you will be working and with who. Ask them detailed questions as it means that you really want to do it properly. Suggest improvements to their workow and show that you are here not only to get the job but to make their company better. If you can bring one innovation to the table they will deďŹ nitely think about employing you. Be careful not to come across that you want to change everything either. Overly ambitious candidates can be as annoying as the slackers. 10 Humour — A good handshake and eye contact are very important but most of all try to introduce humor as you enter ent and leave. If the interviewers seem a little intervie tense it can relieve the situation situ but equally listen to them intently when they th talk and if they crack c a gag remember to t laugh. Be careful — a joker is ďŹ ne in the pub but they th really want a team player pla who is aware of what wha is going on around him aand can make work an enjoyable enjoyab place while getting his job done. done 11 Leave them with a one sentence mission statement. As you leave the room tell them in one last piece of hard-sell who you are and how they should remember you. Prepare this if you can from your original mission statement so that it will re-enforce it when they are looking back over the CVs and cover letters later.
