Exhibition of the week DUBLIN based painter Mairead O’hEocha exhibits at Butler Gallery until Sunday, May 1. This exhibition is comprised of a selection of works made by the artist over the last five years. O’hEocha’s work follows a timeline where castles, fields, garages and housing estates map the layered histories of the South-East of Ireland. The new motorways of the region now link everywhere with the European mainframe and have,

she says, dramatically reduced the traffic of country roads. For her,

the rural rhythms of the backroads seem to be retreating in time and in tandem with the acceleration of nearby motorway traffic. This temporal landscape allows O’hEocha to pursue her continued interest in ‘the specifics of place’. Here the parallel timeframes of these roads afford real sites for questioning what is unique and what is universal. These works are meticulously balanced and present a focused clarity that is densely layered.

Fundraiser of the week SIGN up now for the Spar Great Ireland Run that takes place on Sunday, April 10 in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. Over 600 people in Ireland are estimated to die through suicide annually, one in six suicide deaths are males under 25 years. It is anticipated that the Great Ireland Run will attract record numbers with 12,000 participants expected to tog out on the day. Log onto www.greatirelandrun.org to sign up.

THEATRE WILD HARVEST Director Ger Cody

A

WELCOME revival of this excellent play, it examines the boredom and horror of ‘80s rural Ireland where emigration and unemployment were as prevalent as they are now. It tells the story of a group of friends in a small parish. The main character Colm lives on the farm with his uncle Larry who despises all his buddies who come to call. Most of all Pat who lives to taunt everyone he meets and two brothers Finbar and Donal, a pair of harmless wasters. The only exception is Leo his best friend who is from a respectable family and is about to emigrate. Meanwhile there is Larry’s wife Kay who tries to keep the peace between everyone. They joke, argue and ďŹ ght over the course of the play while we see the divisions grow between friends and family because of the desperate times. As a snapshot of a dark period in Irish history this play really works. That is not to say it isn’t hilariously funny. The banter between the lads makes it hugely entertaining especially in the scenes where they re-enact pretend boxing matches and mock each other about their sexual prowess. This is a deeply violent play also where the simmering hatred soon boils to the top and there is always a tension beneath the boredom.

This is however what it captures best- the mind boggling tedium of waiting around for jobs, love and life to begin that a young person of any era can relate to. Much credit to this latest ‘Watergate’ production must go to Ger Cody who expertly cast and directed this group of young

actors. Much like their version of ‘The Kings of the Kilburn High Road’, which it would make a great companion piece with, it is everything that is great about local theatre. The acting is of a professional standard while the subject matter reects the lives of the audience watching. Most of all

there is the courageous blocking by Cody. He is not afraid to let moments hang on stage to show the paused lives of these people and while never breaking the natural feel of the play it is quite experimental at points. This must be the inuence of the Devious Theatre boys who it

was great to see in a more straight forward play. Ken McGuire played Leo with an integrity and a real feel for this character while Dave Thompson uses his swagger and timing to match every beat of his dubious character. The two brothers provide most of the comic relief and Alan Butler and Sean Hackett were a superb double act. The former as an oily thug who is blind to his own stupidity the perfect foil for the moon faced naivety and cunning of the latter. Nicola Keating equipped herself well against this male cast as the only completely decent character in the play. The real kudos must go however to David O’Rourke as Larry and John Morton as Colm. O’Rourke in particular portrays his hard bitten character with such authenticity that it was more like a documentary at times than a piece of theatre. Morton especially in the second half really takes ight as the tortured soul and both of them get the ďŹ nale right which could so easily go wrong. All in all another superb production from this group who raise the bar for local theatre groups nationally. Indeed as someone who saw the original Druid version with Mick Lally and Frankie McCafferty this was on par and indeed surpassed it at points. When the right cast gets the right play it is a rare occasion and especially when the writing is this good you feel honoured to be witnessing it. — DARRAGH BYRNE.
