Dramatic resuce for Irish teacher ‘You never stop worrying about your children’ says relieved mum after daughter’s escape JIM RHATIGAN KILKENNY REPORTER.IE
A BRAVE Kilkenny teacher had just been whisked to safety out of war-torn Syria as The Reporter went to press last night, Tuesday. Hollie Cremin and three teaching colleagues had only returned to her adopted Damascus after a ‘safe’ weekend in the Lebanese capital of Beirut when the streets ran red with blood after brutal killings. There were fears for the safety of the teachers and local school authorities made frantic arrangements to dash them to safety shortly before lunch yesterday. Hollie had earlier in the weekend been rushed from the Syrian capital and brought to Beirut as fears mounted that there could be rioting after Friday prayers. The Cedarwood Crescent woman and three English teachers were sheltered in a remote part of Beirut for their own safety. After a period of calm, the teachers courageously returned to school in Damascus on Sunday. But only four students turned up and their school was closed. Then in the early hours of yesterday morning all hell broke loose — less than 200 yards from where Hollie and her fellow teachers lived. Hollie had been in bed for some hours but around 2am on Tuesday when she heard gunďŹ re in an area
known as Clock Square. Reports of the dead varied from 20 to 400. Hollie’s mother, Margot Cremin got a phone call from her daughter at 9am Irish time yesterday. Hollie was packing her bags as she spoke to her mother. Then shortly before 12.30pm Irish time the teachers were given half an hour only to grab their belongings as a school minibus waited to speed them back to Beirut. Hollie is now in Limbo. She is stranded in Beirut until at least Easter Monday as arrangements are made to y the group home. It is a harrowing time for mother of three, Margot Cremin of Cedarwood Crescent, Loughboy. The teachers were ďŹ rst evacuated for their own safety as thousands of protesters gathered in several cities including the Damascus where Hollie and her colleagues taught the children of diplomats. Hollie had told her mother that she would not be able to make contact for several days as she would be sheltering in a remote part of once war-torn Beirut which did not have telephone or internet facilities. “Hollie is a brave girl and I was happy that she was in safe hands. I was looking forward to a Tuesday call to say that she was ďŹ ne. I am still worried but thank God Hollie is safe again in Beirut,â€? Margot told The Reporter. “As a mother you never stop worrying about your children. At times like this you ďŹ nd you are particularly tense.â€?
Hollie Cremin conďŹ rmed she was safe to her mum, Margot from Beirut. She ed Damascus for a second time after pro-democracy protesters were killed by the brutal regime of Bashar al-Assad
There was a stand-off on Friday when thousands of supporters were prevented from entering Damascus from the suburb Duoma by security forces who used tear gas. Also in Damascus, dozens of ‘armed men in plain clothes’ surrounded about 250 demonstrators who were gathered outside the Salam Mosque. Then after comparative calm, savage street ďŹ ghting broke out. Hollie has been teaching in
Damascus since August 2010. It is the second time that she has been caught up in troubles. She ew into Cairo Airport to meet a friend when violence raged in Egypt. That was in February and her mother did not hear from her for two and a half days. Hollie was educated at the Gaelscoil, Colåiste Pobail Osraà and St Pat’s Teacher Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin. She has a brother Ronan, a solicitor in Dublin and a sister Leanne.

THE RESULT OF THE GENERAL ELECTION AND THE RECENT THREE-POINT JUMP IN POPULARITY BY FINE GAEL MUST HAVE PEOPLE PUZZLED. FIANNA FÁIL WERE BATTERED AND BRUISED AND PERHAPS BROKEN IN THE GENERAL ELECTION BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY DID AND DIDN’T DO FOR US! ALONG COME FINE GAEL AND THEIR LABOUR ALLIES — ALLIES FOR THE TIME BEING AT LEAST — AND TREAD EXACTLY THE SAME ROAD, TELLING US THAT FF AND THE GREENS DID THE DIRTY DEAL AND THEY HAVE NO OPTION BUT TO CONTINUE IN THE SAME DIRECTION. WHAT BALDERDASH.

This year, Easter falls on the latest date it can be celebrated, April 25. • In Medieval times, an egg-throwing festival was held in churches at Easter. The priest would throw a hard boiled egg at one of the choir boys, which

Theatre of the week Devious Theatre’s ‘Shifting’ runs at No. 76 John Street until this coming Saturday night. The play is a new Kilkenny based comedy written by John Kennedy, who is associate writer with the company for the duration of their residency at Kilkenny Arts Office. It deals with themes such as bleak futures, aimlessness and misdirection, among a group of teenagers who are struggling to take their first steps into adult hood.
Described as a comedy about making the first move, it takes place at a house party as a group of young friends struggle to maintain connections before impending, college, work and uncertain futures break them up forever. As the night progresses, secrets, lies and romantic entanglements threaten to make things really messy. Tickets are on sale at the venue, online at tickets.devioustheatre. com and bookings can be made on 056 – 7794138.
Book of the week ON a cold, quiet day a man’s body is found in an abandoned apartment. His friends look on, but they’re dead, too. Their bodies found in squats and sheds and alleyways across the city. Victims of a bad batch of heroin, they’re in the shadows, a chorus keeping vigil as the hours pass, paying their own particular homage as their friend’s body is taken away, examined, investigated, and cremated. In ‘Even The Dogs’ by Jon McGregor all of their stories are laid out piece by broken piece through a series of fractured narratives. ‘Even The Dogs’ is an intimate exploration of life at the edges of society; littered with love, loss, despair, and a half-glimpse of redemption.
Product of the week MAKE sure you look the part for Barack Obama’s Irish visit with a t-shirt from www. whatsthecraicbarack.bigcartel.com. The website is selling novelty tshirts in the run up to the president’s visit. The t-shirts were conceived by Alan Curley and Kevin Devine and all garments are screenprinted and heat cured in a tunnel dryer to give a print that will last almost forever! Chose from two slogans – ‘What’s the craic Barack?’ or ‘Biffo, Barack is from **ckin Offaly’ They cost €15 each including delivery within Ireland and are available in sizes small, medium, large and extra large.
Pub of the week ANTHONY’S Inn is positioned in the centre of Piltown village in South Kilkenny, just off the Piltown by-pass. Originally Anthony’s Inn was a Bianconi coach inn and museum. Anthony’s Inn and Stables Bar were extensively refurbished in 2004 and 2005 and have been continuously altered to keep up with the times. Anthony’s has a great
reputation for food and friendly service, and the newly renovated bar — with open fireplaces and cosy atmosphere — provides an ideal location to spend a lazy afternoon or evening with friends. The Stables Bar can be hired for private functions; as a music venue, fundraisers or table quizzes. Food, bands or DJs can be provided on request to suit all requirements. Bookings should be made well in advance to avoid disappointment.

FILM YOUR HIGHNESS Director David Gordon Green
D
AVID Gordon Green follows his stupid but funny ‘Pinepple Express’ with this even dumber but mind numbing drivel that is possibly the worst comedy ever made considering the talent involved. It tells the story of a second born prince (Danny McBride) who is jealous of his older brother (James Franco) who gets all the glory. He has recently returned from rescuing a princess (Zoey Deschanel) who is snatched back at his wedding by the evil warlock. Now the king sends his two sons off to on a quest and they meet the usual selection of characters - the wise old sage, the primitive tribe and the sassy female warrior (Natalie Portman). Gordon Green once directed wonderful indie movies like ‘All the Real Girls’ and ‘Undertow’ which won awards at festivals but nobody went to see. He has realized that most audiences are under fifteen, love dirty jokes and computer graphics which this film has unfortunately in spades without an iota of wit or genuine humor.
As a huge fan of the TV series ‘Eastbound and Down’ Danny McBride really disappoints in bringing his brash type of humor to the big screen. It is very sad to report too that James Franco and Natalie Portman, who in trying to cast off the worthy label that came with their Oscar
nominations, are terrible here. The only people who deliver any laughs are the props department whose giant minotaur penis made me chuckle, slightly. So if you are looking for a hilarious send-up of the fantasy sub-genre then look to ‘Princess Bride’ rather than this awful mess.
It falla short because it has little affection for the conventions it is sending up and lazily just peppers the script with vulgarity and swearwords instead. It seems to have been cooked up by stoned twelve year olds after a few too many games of ‘Dungeon and Dragons’
In fact as putrid as ‘Krull’ and other such ‘80s monstrosities which involved magic weapons, mechanical creatures and bad acting were they at least had a naive charm rather than this cynical failure. — DARRAGH BYRNE.
