Key elements to make bold colour statements WITH AISLING HURLEY
sales@kilkennyreporter.ie
REPORTER WISHLIST THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS.... COLOUR BLOCKING COLOUR blocking is a huge trend this spring/summer but it is not for everyone. It takes a brave person to put a mixture of bright colours together without feeling a little bit like a circus clown. However, if you want to embrace the trend without going the whole hog you could invest in these beaded t bar sandals from Penneys. Due in store mid-month they are going for a song at only €9. They would work really well with most colours but if you really want to make them pop wear them with black. These sandals would see you right through the summer!
BRIGHT STAR EMBRACE a creative design with this yellow tropical scarf top from Star by Julien Macdonald. The artistic tropical print brings
a relaxed and bright tone to your look, complete with a contrasting black trim to the round neck and cuffs and a tie to the waist, giving a more fitted look. This would be a great holiday top that would carry you from the beach to a night out and would be super flattering on all body shapes because of the way the material drapes. It’s also an opportunity to add a designer piece to your wardrobe while paying only a high street price. Available from www. debenhams.ie for €60 plus delivery.
LIQUID FABRIC IT can be difficult to find good products for curly hair. Most of them either leave your hair feeling too soft and flyaway or rock hard. This is not the case however with Shu
Uemura’s Liquid Fabric. Designed to accentuate the beauty of curly hair, Liquid Fabric revitalises and invigorates curls and waves. This mineral-infused spray produces an ideal curl pattern with a natural looking finish while providing moisture balance, humidity resistance, frizz control and heatstyling protection. It’s also perfectly safe to use on colour-treated hair. Shu Uemura products can be hard to find but there is a great selection of them available on www.shampoo. ie where you can order the fabulous Liquid Fabric for €27.
SUNSET WITH a stretch opening up in the evenings it’s time to go out and get a barbecue and start enjoying some meals outdoors. Chimeneas are the hottest garden accessories right now. As the story goes, chimeneas were invented hundreds if not thousands of years ago by Mexican tribesmen who developed them as a means of providing heat for their families as well as a vessel for cooking and baking. The original chimenea was designed to keep the rain off the fire and the family warm using merely a couple of sticks. This handsome Old Yellow Sunset chimenea is available from www. barbecue.ie. A small one will set you back €59, medium €79 and large €129.
RUBY WOO! YOUR search for the perfect red lipstick is over! Mac’s ‘Ruby Woo’ is hands down the best shade of red lipstick ever invented. It is the colour of choice for stalwart red lipped divas Dita Von Teese and Imelda May so if you wear it you can be sure you are in good company. The rich blood red lipstick is very reminiscent of pin up girls of times gone by. It has super staying power so once on it will not bleed or budge all night. It’s quite a matte lipstick, which is what gives it such as lasting effect, however, if you prefer a glossier finish you could always top it up with a clear lipgloss such as Mac’s ‘Clear Lipglass’.
Mac products are available through Mint on Patrick Street.
STRESS AWAY IS stress getting you down? Unfortunately stress has become an accepted part of modern life but help is at hand with BetterYou ‘Stress Away’. A|wear invites you all to join Club Tropicana
B
OLD colour blocking, midi/ maxi lengths and brave new shapes all feature strongly in A|wear’s ‘Club Tropicana’ summer collection. Think Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall dancing the night away in Studio 54. Silhouettes are dramatic with floor skimming maxi dresses in luxe aubergine and deep purple mixed with bright tropical prints. A cool ‘70s influence is key across the collection with vibrant colour playing a vital role. Hues of tangerine, coral, fuchsia, yellow and purple are all dominant. There are two key lengths in dresses this season; the maxi and the midi. Both are versatile and easy to wear. Team them with simple flip flops and costume jewellery in shades of gold. According to A|wear the midi length is the new ‘go to’ length this season and they predict it will be a wardrobe staple going forward. The Club Tropicana collection includes a 1970s inspired black midi dress (€45) to get you started. Its length and cinched waist make it bang on trend. Dress it up with killer heels or dress down with flats. Add a faded denim cropped shape jacket and it will definitely be your ‘throw on and go’ dress this season. In trouser shapes, the new style is definitely the all in one palazzo jumpsuit, a real timeless classic. The A|wear slinky aubergine style (€45) is a must have this summer. Team with a thin gold waisted belt and relaxed hair and make up for a simple yet glamorous evening look. For the girl who likes to brave her legs, the shorter style dress is still important. Key shapes include the asymmetric dress (€45) which will make the perfect party piece or the floral ditsy print belted dress (€40) ideal for a daytime casual look. In knitwear and t-shirts, colour blocking really bursts onto the scene with super bright orange, pink and coral. Team up with easy white denim
(€30) or softly faded skinnies for instant summer colour. In accessories, the classic clutch is key (€20) in shiny mock croc and gold. This season A|wear is introducing their first ever summer footwear collection starting at just €19 for fab flip flops in metallic gold and silver. Suede sandals with pretty corsage detailing in burnt orange and taupe (€29) will also make a real footwear statement. For height, they’re championing the wedge. With catwalk inspired woven and raffia styles in natural and block colours (€55) these will make for effortless holiday mix and matching. For something a little more special they offer embellished platform styles (€45) in pinks and purples and the season’s signature print; leopard (€39) to really make a wow statement. The most important thing to take from the new collection is most definitely the price! You can achieve the entire ‘70s look including footwear for less than €100. What’s not to love! A|wear is available in Goods, High Street and MacDonagh Junction.

Shop of the week ‘ARTISTS By Night’, Tia and Dani Vellani design and handcraft out-ofthe-ordinary jewellery with prices that everyone can afford. A visit to their workshop at Castlecomer Estate Yard allows customers to witness the meticulous effort that goes into each piece. Tia and Dani aim to bring innovative and beautiful art to the community and to maintain their studio as a cutting-edge visionary space where visitors can share a stimulating chat and become part
of the creative process. They offer handcrafted designer jewellery, wearable fine art sculpture, a guarantee of superior quality and durability, outstanding customer service, a range of prices, selections for women, men, teenagers and kids and accept ideas from visitors who order custom works. ‘Artists by Night’ were recently commissioned to make a special one-off brooch for Hollywood legend Maureen O’Hara.
This influence encourages young Mark Sweeney to leave his home and enter religious life in Chapel Hill House Of Prayer. However, Mark is introduced to a different
outlook, culture and ‘world’ when his exiled Uncle Jack returns home unexpectedly in late ’69. What ensues is a tense, enthralling and emotional story as these two worlds inevitably clash. Willie Egan’s previous work includes ‘Dreams, Schemes and Miracles’, ‘Darby’s Castle’, ‘The Diamond Spider’ and ‘The Good To Suffer’. The play is directed by Brendan Corcoran.
Theatre of the week WILLIE Egan’s ‘The Winter Of 69’ opens at the Watergate Theatre tonight (Wednesday) and runs until Saturday with performances 8pm nightly. The play looks at a particular situation when two cultural worlds collide within the same family. The Sweeney family, rural small farmers of the time, have lived all their lives in the safe sheltered ‘world’ of religious influence and guidance.
Book of the week HER name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. Born a poor black tobacco farmer, her cancer cells, taken without her knowledge, became a multimillion-dollar industry and one of the most important tools in medicine. Yet Henrietta’s family did not learn of her ‘immortality’ until more than twenty years after her death, with devastating consequences. Balancing the beauty and drama of scientific discovery with dark questions about who owns the stuff our bodies are made of ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ by Rebecca Skloot is an extraordinary journey in search of the soul and story of a real woman.
Product of the week FORGET all that boring communication business, the sophisticated timewaster’s favourite app involves catapulting comedy birds at egg-snaffling piggies. Indeed with over 50 million downloads across all platforms, Angry Birds is a smartphone phenomenon. But why merely play Angry Birds when you can snuggle up to a real one? If you like your birds big and angry (but don’t mind the odd pig) look no further because these snugglesome cuddlies are 8” high! There are four different ones to collect – Piggy, Yellow, Blue and Red Angry Bird. Get yours from www. firebox.com.
Pub of the week A NIGHT out at Biddy Early’s on John Street is guaranteed to be an eventful one. With live bands, djs, karaoke and party nights there is always something happening. Tonight (Wednesday) they are hosting a ‘Bud Ice Cold Index launch where customers will be introduced to the all new Bud Ice Cold Index App for mobiles. There will be food, sample pints, music, entertainment and fun. Every day between May
1 - August 31 barstaff will read the temperature at 1pm. When the temperature is 16-17.9 degrees = €1 off a Budweiser, 18-19.9 degrees = €2 off a Budweiser and 20+ degrees = Free Budweiser Ice Cold!! You can download the App on iTunes and android from today. The hotter the day, the less you pay. Biddy Early’s also do an exciting line in cocktails and shots at very competitive prices.

DRAWING and music have much in common. They possess many similar tools of expression such as rhythm, movement, pace, fluidity, harmony and tone. With this in mind artist Catherine Barron will engage with the Rhythm & Roots Festival this coming weekend as a creative force for a three day drawing project, where the drawings will be a direct reaction and response to the sights and sounds of the festival. The drawings will then form the basis of an exhibition during The
Kilkenny Arts Festival in August. Speaking about the project she said: “ I will prepare a variety of grounds and materials so that I can engage with abstract/expressive drawing as well as observational/ figurative drawing and every hybrid in between including collage. “I hope not to engage in any retouching or redrawing when the festival has ended so that I will have an authentic body of work which directly reflects my experience of the festival.”
Exhibition of the week
Fundraiser of the week THE Carer’s Association mini marathon takes place this coming Monday. Everyone is welcome to take part. Bring the strollers or even the dog on a lead. Water will be available at tables along the route. Order of Malta personnel will be there in case of any medical issues and a wheelchair bus will be available for anybody in need of assistance. You can stroll, walk, jog or run - it’s up to you. The race starts at 3pm at Woodies carpark on the
Ring Road. Late registration will be held outside Aspect Hotel. The 10k run will proceed out the Kilkenny/Waterford Road (N10), to Foulkstown, turning left at Foulkstown, and around in a right hand loop to Grovine Cross where participants will turn right and continue back to the finish line in Woodies carpark. Registration is €12. Log onto www.runireland.com or www. carersireland.com for entry forms or further details.
Gig of the week WHEN rock ‘n’ roll was shaken from its pre-punk complacency by the emergence of Dr Feelgood, it was their guitarist Wilko Johnson who excited most attention, not only for the startling violence of his stage performance but also for his guitar style which combined the roles of lead and rhythm guitar in driving riffs and a stuttering machine gun frenzy which altered conception of ‘guitar heroics’. The list of ‘70s New Wave bands
who acknowledge the influence of Wilko and the Feelgoods include The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Boomtown Rats, The Ramones and Blondie. Wilko plays two gigs in Kilkenny at the Rhythm and Roots festival – one this coming Saturday night in The Set Theatre and another at 3pm on Sunday afternoon in The Kilford Arms. Tickets are available from Rollercoaster Records, St Kieran’s Street.
Something for Sunday WITH the good weather set to continue it’s time to get the whole family out walking again. If you are looking for a signposted walk then you should head to Kilmacoliver Walk, Tullahought. The trail begins on level terrain and works its way uphill for about two kilometres. Once you reach the summit of Kilmacoliver Hill the views are truly spectacular. On a fine day you can see the counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Carlow.
At the top you will also discover a circular enclosure of standing stones believed to be a megalithic tomb commonly known as the ‘Burial Ground’. On the walk back down you can see the village of Ahenny built by a mining company to house slate quarrymen. The graveyards that border the village feature Celtic High Crosses dating from the 7th century. Measuring six kilometres the walk takes about one and a half hours to complete.

The second part of their ‘In the Future All is Well’ trilogy in the Arts Office residency, this is about teenagers adrift in our modern abyss and kissing each other to make up the gaps in between. The structure of the play is of an 18th birthday party where a bunch of expectant and slightly drunken girls wait for the lads to arrive and most importantly a cool band who are on their way down from Dublin. In the second act all the secrets and lies come forward as the party goers are even more inebriated and there is the violent arrival of a third party with a hurley. To pass the time there is banter, casseroles and shifting; lots of shifting. Written for the ďŹ rst time by a new writer who isn’t established Devious have taken a gamble on a young playwright not yet out of his teenage years. John Kennedy has repaid this gamble with a ďŹ ne piece of writing which is very tense and funny but equally not afraid to handle darker matters. Showing a huge maturity of approach while keeping an ear for his age group’s turn of phrase this never for a second feels forced or gauche. John Morton, Ken McGuire and Angela Barret must all take a bow for helping this young cast onto a larger stage. All veterans of youth theatre, this massive leap to a professional environment is made seamless by the quality of the blocking and their superb performances. FACTFILE GROW YOUR OWN HERBS WITH SOME SIMPLE POINTERS
I
f you are not lucky enough to have a big garden then a couple of plant pots can still look really pretty and cheerful. So for a change this year why not plant herbs? They are not only very colourful and smell gorgeous, but you will get a real kick out of cooking with them. As soil in containers dries out faster than in the ground, containers require regular watering. However,, since theyy are portable, this makes looking after them m really easy as you can move them around depending g on the weather. There are basically two kinds of herbs those that need a lot of moisture and those that do not. Herbs thatt prefer moisture-rich ch soil include basil, tarragon, and parsley, while herbs that do not need as much water, include chives, oregano, sage, rosemary,
thyme, bay, marjoram, and lavender. Plant moisture-loving herbs in ch retain plastic containers, which water, and put herbs that hat n do not need as much in terracotta containers, which draw out water. No matter what kind off container, make sure there are drainage holes at the bottom. Otherwise plants Otherwise, can rot from sittin in too sitting mu water. much When h harvesting, take t big leaves ves and the leave l the small mall ones. Some S herbs will hold up w through two or three well cuttings cu before they go to seed. see Ro Rosemary is my one of my favorite favorit herbs. It dries perfectly, holds it’s strong s taste all winter, comes indoors and keeps growing in a sunny window and is rarely bothered by insects.
Basil is one of the most rewarding herbs to grow in a container. It really lends itself well we to the other popular container c plant the tomato. tom Basil likes to ha have plenty of wa water to keep its fle fleshy stems and te tender leaves p plump. Thyme is an o often undervalued h herb. Many times it gets planted and ne never used. It will thriv thrive in a container enviro environment, needing only minimal min watering. Some varieties vari grow into small shrub-like plants and it’s tiny purple flowers are lovely. Mint and Sage are two other plants that do well if properly cared for. The great thing about having your herbs in pots is that they are more readily available for use. You will be more apt to use them in your cooking when they are right outside your kitchen door.
