25 05 2011 KILKENNY REPORTER
Residents angered by ‘dangerous’ path THE POWER of the press was fully borne out in a Kilkenny City Street on Thursday afternoon. Within ďŹ ve minutes of a Reporter journalist and photographer meeting local people to discuss a campaign to have a brittle footpath repaired, two Local Authority employees arrived in the street in a white van. The men marked out a shattered footpath area outside home No 38 in Wolfe Tone Street which, they said, would be repaired. But it will take more than repairs to one section of the street’s crumbling footpath to appease local residents who are angry because they believe they are being treated as second class citizens.
Geraldine Brennan who has been living in the street for over half a century, has, in recent times, been edging her way along the faulty footpath, calling to homes, urging residents to sign a petition calling for urgent repairs to a path which has been branded as ‘highly dangerous’. She was conďŹ dent that all local residents would have signed the petition by the weekend and the list of names will then be handed in to the Local Authorities in the hope of getting some action. She told The Reporter that in all her years in the street she never remembered any serious
work being done to a path which is certainly dodgy in several sections. She described Wolfe Tone Street as the ‘forgotten street’ and said that on Wednesday last there had been an accident when one of three backpackers passing through the area had fallen on a particularly bad patch. Fortunately, the young girl escaped with cut knees only. Geraldine said the residents were determined that repairs should be carried out before someone was hurt and said that walking on the path had become particularly hazardous for local people who used Zimmer Frames and for the elderly of the area, several of whom were in their 80s and 90s.
Quick response: Within minutes of a Reporter journalist and snapper arriving, Local Authority employees had appeared, marking out a damaged area and saying it would be reparied soon

THOSE WHO FROM TIME TO TIME FREQUENT BARS IN OTHER CITIES AND TOWNS IN IRELAND WILL NO DOUBT AGREE THAT THE PUBS OF KILKENNY ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE. Theatre of the week LONDON Classic Theatre present ‘Ghosts’ by Henrik Ibsen in a new version by Frank McGuinness at the Watergate Theatre on Wednesday June 1. Ibsen’s study of hidden passions and family secrets remains as dramatically alive as ever in Frank McGuinness’ new version. Helene Alving is preparing for the opening of an orphanage, built in memory of her late husband. Her beloved artist son, Oswald, has returned home from Paris to honour the occasion,
but his long awaited homecoming rapidly descends into tragedy as his presence triggers the exposure of a dark story of hypocrisy and betrayed love. Frank McGuinness is an awardwinning Irish playwright and poet. His plays include ‘The Factory Girls’ and ‘Someone to watch over me’. He has translated the plays of Racine, Sophocles, Ibsen, and Strindberg. Show: 8pm. Tickets €18/€15 are available at the box office (056) 77 61674.
Book of the week WITH Season four of HBO’s ‘True Blood’ due to kick off next month vampire fans are eager to get their hands on ‘Dead Reckoning’ the 11th instalment of Charlaine Harris’s ’Sookie Stackhouse’ (Southern Vampire) Series. With her knack for being in trouble’s way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte’s Bar. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be twonatured, suspicion falls immediately on the antishifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover and his ‘child’ Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the complicated plot.

FILM PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Director Rob Marshall
S
o it has ďŹ nally arrived and no doubt the franchise will once again ďŹ ll cinemas with audiences bamboozled by the marketing campaign. However the sad decline of the Hollywood blockbuster reaches its nadir with this - the singularly most empty ďŹ lm ever made. The story, such as it is, centres on Jack Sparrow once again buccaneering his way though a number of set pieces. Penelope Cruz pops up in another shoddy English language role for herself and then Ian McShane arrives as the panto villain- Blackbeard. There is some vague plot about the fountain of youth and mermaids as well as Geoffrey Rush and Keith Richards doing their tiresome schtick once again. To describe this movie as pointless is an understatement. Everyone thought they had exhausted every conceivable cliche about pirates in the last ďŹ lm. They have to their shame returned to pillage the hard pressed purses of parents with young kids once
again. The only kind thing I can say about it is that I found it easier to stay awake during this one
than Pirates 3. Although that was probably down to the length which was mercifully shorter than its

predecessor. Johnny Depp is a disgrace. Once the darling of indie cinema
and the main reason to see Tim Burton’s movies. He now merely ďŹ lls his bank account by cobbling together putrid mainstream ‘hits’. His mugging in this one particularly is really annoying and any charm he once had is well and truly destroyed. No longer is he a ‘quirky’ actor lending a bit of class to a blockbuster but just another major league star prostituting his talents. Rob Marshall must also take some blame for helping to kill this franchise off. A Broadway musical director who robbed an Oscar with ‘Chicago’ he then revealed himself to be completely talentless in ‘Nine’. Here once again he shows himself to be without a clue how to block actors or tell a story. The action set pieces are adequate but I imagine the stunt team and CGI crew for this kind of juggernaut are well versed. All he probably had to do was say ‘Cool Johnny’ after each terrible take. Indeed, there is scant visible proof that he did anything else. This will make you feel as cheap and unfulďŹ lled as a night out in a fast food restaurant. Why not skip the cinema and go straight there for a more enjoyable evening? The re-enactments your children make with their Jack Sparrow and Blackbeard Happy Meal toys will be a lot more entertaining than this crap. — DARRAGH BYRNE.

Positive mood as O’Loughlin Gaels celebrate in style Annual dinner full of colour and style as Chairman says club is focused ahead of Feile na nGael Finals THE MOOD was positive at the annual dinner of O’Loughlin Gaels GAA Club. New President, Eamon Doyle said the club had moved on from defeat in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Club Final and was now looking forward to the Feile na nGael Finals in Galway, in June. A strong squad of 24 players will head to the Feile and they will be backed by a support group of at least 100, including parents. Over 300 celebrated another good year at the Langton’s Hotel party. The club had won the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship and the Leinster Club Final while the junior camogie team had won local honours. The senior players were presented with their medals by President

Elect of the GAA, Liam O’Neill while O’Loughlin’s camogie chairman, Jim Kavanagh presented Junior Championship trophies. Among the guests at the function were former GAA President, Nickey Brennan, Co Board chairman, Paul Kinsella, secretary, Ned Quinn and sponsors, Ballybought Street publican, Pat Carroll and Donie Butler of MacDonagh Junction. The cheer of the night went to county and club hurling star, Martin Comerford who has called time on his inter-county career. Paul Kinsella paid tribute to the very popular ‘Gorta’ and wished him well in his future years as a playing member of O’Loughlin Gaels.
There were good wishes too for staunch club hurler, Brian Hogan who will captain the Kilkenny senior hurlers in this year’s championship. And the positive mood continued with the camogie girls who presented mementoes to their mentors and thanked them for their support during a successful campaign. Philly Twomey, Gerry Buckley and Seamie Cummins received presentations from Aoife Nolan. Founded in 1969, the O’Loughlin Gaels club has won practically every honour at several levels of the game and they are looking forward to a return to Croke Park when they plan to bring the club senior AllIreland championship to Kilkenny.
