Our David really Rules the World Aintree hero lucky to land winning horse AT THE age of 19, David Mullins is on top of the racing world, having ridden Rule the World to victory in the Grand National at Aintree. “You dream of things like that,” he said. “Everything went to plan. I couldn’t ask for much more.” To top a great day, David went on to win the last race in Liverpool on Ivan Grozny, trained by his uncle Willie Mullins at Bagenalstown. David is the latest star in the great Carlow racing galaxy. Willie is the leading jumps trainer in Ireland and Britain. David’s father is trainer Tom. His grandfather, Paddy, trained the great mare Dawn Run and his aunt, Marion Hughes, is a highly regarded horsewoman. They are based at at Closutton (Bagenalstown) and at Goresbridge, Co. Kilkenny David had never ridden the Aintree course before his remarkable win on the 33-1 outsider. Chrissie is coming to the big ideas festival MUSICIAN Chrissie Hynde and author Martin Amis have been added to the impressive line-up of The Borris House Festival of Writing & Ideas. Hynde was a founder of the Pretenders. The British music publication Q Magazine once called her “the high priestess of badass rock and roll. She was at the centre of controversy last year because of a memoir called Reckless: My Life as a Pretender. In the book she tells how she was used for sex by a group of bikers when she was 21. In interviews, she refused to call it rape, saying she took “full responsibility because she was “so stoned ... I didn’t even care. More than 70 speakers will descend on Borris for the three day festival running from June 10-12. Amis and Hynde will join previously announced guests Joseph O’Neill, Kate Summer-

Brrrr ... Carlow’s deep freeze hits rock bottom CARLOW recorded the lowest temperature in the country last month. The month’s lowest grass minimum of -9.5 degrees celsius was reported at Oak Park. To emphasis the impression of a pretty cold month, Oak Park also recorded ground frost for 26 days - more than anywhere else in the country. If it was cold, it was also dry. March was drier than average right across the country, with one weather station in Tipperary reporting an “absolute droughtâ€?. The Gurteen station had a period of 15 or more days with less than 0.2mm of rainfall. Overall, Met Éireann’s review of the month said that it was dry, cold and sunny. 7KH ÂżQH ZHDWKHU IURP March to 23 March was responsible for below average rainfall, but no long-term records were broken. At Cork Airport, a third of the month’s rainfall occurred on 26 March with 25.5mm falling. Most temperatures, however, were also down. While
mean temperature is usually around 8.5 degrees Celsius, it dipped to 7.6 degrees at Sherkin Island in Cork. The lowest air minimum was -5.1 degrees Celsius at Mullingar, Westmeath, its lowest in six years, while the station also reported the highest number of days with air frost, 12. The highest temperatures were mainly between 11 and 18 March with the month’s highest maximum reported at Newport on 16 March with 16.1 degrees. The country was only hit by one named storm in March, when Storm Jake swept in at the start of the month, bringing 72 knot winds, the highest in nine years at some stations. Monthly sunshine totals were lowest at Cork Airport with 96.4 hrs (daily mean 3.1 hrs, 93% of LTA) with the station also reporting the month’s highest number of dull days. The highest monthly sunshine was reported at Belmullet, Co Mayo with 132.1 hours (daily mean 4.3 hrs).

INCREASED demand for straw and hay has been recorded in recent days. In the southeast, volume of straw has been moving, with demand for both 4x4 round bales and 8x4x3 square bales. One farmer told the Irish Farmers Journal that he has been receiving an increase volume of calls from the northern half of the country in the past month. Another farmer from Co Waterford said that he ran out of straw four weeks ago but calls are still being made from farmers in the north and west of the country. For farmers in the southeast, 4x4 round bales are trading at â‚Ź8 to â‚Ź12, while 8x4x3 bales are â‚Ź20 in the shed. These prices do, however, exclude transportation costs. These signals were also found during the particularly wet summer of 2012 when soils were wet and storms coincided with normal summer slurry spreading. There was also evidence of other nutrient losses during the closed period and the analysis suggested these were from residual soil sources rather than recently spread livestock slurry. This shows the potential for nutrients that were spread in earlier years, or even decades, to be lost to water now, and into the future.

I talked the talk but my ideal job just walked Question: I am so disappointed, I felt I did a great interview and I still didn’t get the job, Why? Answer: This is not an uncommon occurrence as there are so many factors at play during the interview itself and broader hiring process that you unfortunately have no control over. Although doing the pre interview prep work like Googling the interviewers, company website and knowing the job spec and your CV inside out are imperative, it does not necessarily mean you will get the job, so prepare yourself for this possibility. Blame it on the ballot box KICKING politicians is Ireland’s favourite sport and we have indulged in it to the full since the general election, with commentators and the public united in condemnation of the failure to form a government. Nobody mentions that it was us, the electorate at ODUJH ZKR FDXVHG WKH SUREOHP LQ WKH ÂżUVW SODFH We rejected a stable government which had turned a bankrupt country into Europe’s fastest growing economy. We knew the medicine prescribed by Doctors Kenny and Burton was good for us but we didn’t like the taste of it. So a lot of us decided to try our luck with Doctor Martin, even though Fianna FĂĄil’s medicine had nearly killed us a few years ago. Another, somewhat smaller group, chose to trust our national health to the snakeoil peddled by Doctor Adams and Sinn Fein. And many of us decided that Ireland’s wellbeing could best be served by practitioners of alternative medicine, with no relevant experience at all, and elected a disparate bunch of independents, most of whom had been neither tried nor tested. :H ÂżOOHG WKH 'iLO ZLWK groups that had vowed not to work together and professed to be shocked and saddened that they kept their word. When - or should that EH LI" WKH\ GR ÂżQDOO\ give us a government we will no doubt be complaining about the speed with which election promises were broken.. In fact, our TDs have behaved in an entirely predictable fashion. Sinn FĂŠin and the left wing groups have not even tried to provide the country with leadership although it is they who bleat loudest about the problems, such as health and the homeless, which have gone unattended. They talk about their mandate, and how they will will not renege on their election promises, but seem to see no contradiction in asking Fine Gael and Fianna FĂĄil to do just that. The independents have not been so hypocritical but, for all practical purposes, their behaviour has been no better. They want a government formed but only so they can go begging to it with their own constituency interests. With a couple of exceptions, they have shown no interest in the detailed work of government-making; no enthusiasm for the hard slog and many compromises needed to construct a programme for government. The Labour Party has some excuse for steering clear of government, since it was so roundly rejected at the ballot box. But it is disappointing that the Social Democrats, having promised a new approach, turned their back on constructive politics as soon as the going got tough. If Britain votes in June to leave the Euopean Union, Ireland will be in desperate need of good government and clear thinking at the negotiating table. I fear we will not have it - and we will have only ourselves to blame. Whatever way the present wrangling ends, I do not think we will get a government built to last. We will be back at the polls sooner rather than later. When that happens, we must not make the same mistake. We should not elect an unworkable DĂĄil, then react with horror when it does not work. If we want stable government we must elect parties that are willing and able to provide it. So let us remember who tried to put the country ÂżUVW DQG ZKR SUHIHUUHG WR SOD\ WR WKH JDOOHU\ There is more to politics that issuing press statements. It’s a lot easier said than done, of course, but the alternative for those not necessarily ‘cut out’ for third level education is, say, to travel, make friends, spend a year in Happy Burger, have a ‘selfeducation’, perhaps take to a trade apprenticeship or start from the bottom up, as I did (the vagaries of today’s much-touted ‘internship’ notwithstanding), with a steely determination to make it. I know plenty of young people doing so, straitened times or no. And, of course, a trade can always pay loads of dosh ... remember the last time you paid a plumbHU" 7KDW LV ZKHQ \RX PDQDJHG WR ÂżQG RQH

LEINSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
The lights are still on Carlow Kildare
0-14 0-12
TO THE casual observer, maybe, the closeness of the scoring was a surprise; to the hurling people who have been watching the steady progress of the game in Kildare - including Naas not only competing in but reaching the ďŹ nal of the Kilkenny U-16 Roinn A League last year that Carlow won at all was a welcome outcome. Adding merit to this hard fought victory over the LilyWhites - who began with 7 Nass clubmen on their starting 15 - was the fact that Carlow played the last 20 minutes (+ injury-time) of the Netwatch Cullen Park encounter a man down having
lost lively raider Jon Nolan to two yellow cards, the ďŹ rst a harsh enough decision. Carlow were a couple of points ahead at the time of the sending off and a battling rearguard action - sturdy fullback Dara Tobin outstanding, No 6 Garry Lawler catching a great ball at a vital juncture - helped stay in front while a couple of superb Cathal Treacy points from distance kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end with substitute Niall Roche riing the clincher between the Deerpark end posts deep in ‘lost’ time. Before the game if you had been told ace sharpshooter Chris Nolan would score less than half of Carlow’s total you’d be fearful given his ag raising exploits in the league, that a loss might be the
outcome but on this occasion others stepped up to the scoring plate to assist him, the aforementioned Treacy, Cathal Lennon early on, Tony Lawler from long range as well as his brother Jon (set up by an astute long hand pass from the older bro). Chris contributed a half-dozen points, ďŹ ve from placed balls and a lovely score on the run from play but showed great leadership qualities too in his willingness to graft and tackle. Speaking of graft, towards the ďŹ nish when hassling without fouling was crucial and every block, every hook, halfhook important both Tommy Dowling (to prevent a long clearance) and Ross McEvoy (baulking an attempted pass) made vital interventions while sub David Nolan got on a couple of vital balls in the
middle of the ďŹ eld. Carlow led 0-10 to 0-7 at the break, starting the game with Chris Nolan in the left corner from where he nearly pilfered an early goal. Indeed the home side could have had two goals early on, another two closer to half-time, a combination of good goalkeeping and bad luck keeping the green ag down. Operating from Tier 3 for the ďŹ rst time in years, Carlow knew defeat would put the lights out on their championship, no back-door, now John McDonald, Mick Redmond, Damien Byrne and Willie Hickey can prepare their charges for a cut at Laois in a fortnights time ... Carlow: Damien Jordan (Naomh Eoin); Padraig Slye
(Naomh Eoin), Dara Tobin (Mount Leinster Rangers), Ross McEvoy (Naomh Eoin); Joe Holden (Burren Rangers), Gary Lawler (Mount Leinster Rangers), Tony Lawler (Mount Leinster Rangers) 0-1; Gavin Connolly (St Mullins), Anthony Nolan (Naomh Eoin); Conor Lennon (Erin’s Own) 0-2, Tommy Dowling (Ballinkillen), Niall Lynam (Mount Leinster Rangers); Cathal Treacy (Naomh Eoin) 0-3, Jon Nolan (Mount Leinster Rangers) 0-1, Chris Nolan (Mount Leinster Rangers) 0-6 5f. Subs: Alan Whelan (Erin’s Own) for Connolly, David Nolan (Naomh Eoin) for A Nolan (36), Jason O’Neill (St Mullins) for Lennon (36), Niall Roche (Naomh BrĂd) 0-1 for Holden (55)

Behind the original Georgian features of the Step House Hotel are 20 luxurious bedrooms, designed in a sweeping curve to create panoramic views of rolling countryside as it rises to meet Mount Leinster. Luckily for young Arlo, his parents (Jeffrey Wright, Frances McDormand) and his two siblings, the mighty dinosaurs were not wiped out 65 million years ago. When a rainstorm washes poor Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) downriver, he ends up bruised, battered and miles away from home. Good fortune shines on the frightened dino when he meets Spot (Jack Bright), a Neanderthal boy who offers his help and friendship. Album of the week
Changes by Charles Bradley Charles Bradley, the subject of a 2012 documentary, is a soul man with a storied past, not least his long stint as a James Brown impersonator. Here, on his third album since emerging as an artist in his own right, Bradley evokes a kind of weary, vintage warmth as he tackles heartbreak in the company of the Daptone Horns, and blanches at the state of the world on the unexpectedly dubby Change for the World. Most notable of all is a cover of Black Sabbath’s Changes, teasing out the blues-metal band’s heretofore unnoticed soul bent.
