THE SOPRANOS
BY EIMEAR NI BHRAONAIN THE band behind the bluesy theme tune of the hit US TV series ‘The Sopranos’ are playing in Kilkenny this weekend. If you’re feeling sentimental about the show since actor James Gandolfini, who famously played the role of Tony Soprano, died from a
heart attack last June, then this is a gig for you. Alabama 3 penned ‘Woke Up This Morning’ -- a track most of us are familiar with as it’s the soundtrack to Tony Soprano’s morning drive through his New Jersey estate. Now the musicians will take to the stage in Kyteler’s Inn
on Kieran Street this Saturday night. This is one of only three shows they will play in Ireland on their tour. The special live acoustic gig will follow support from Kilkenny’s own Thomas O’Donoghue band. Doors open at 9pm and tickets are priced at €15
(available from Kyteler’s Inn). The four-piece outfit is made up of Rock Freebase (guitar), Larry Love (vocals), Aurora Dawn (vocals), and Harpo Strangelove (harmonica). Alabama 3 describe themselves as “country/gospel/ delta blues, but played with a rhythm you’ve still got to
dance to”. With the addition of Aurora Dawn to their line-up, they describe their sound on the cover of the band’s latest album, Revolver Soul, as “soul music with a gun against your head”. Alabama 3, who are also known as A3, paid homage to James Gandolfini at one
of their concerts earlier this summer. They held a moment of silence at their show in Mandela Hall in Belfast to honour the late actor. “A very wonderful actor called James Gandolfini died the other day and this is the first gig we’ve done since hearing the news,” said the group’s lead singer, Larry Love, on the night.

DESPICABLE
ME BY JONATHAN SHEILS
I
n “Despicable Me 2,” Steve Carell’s Gru is a changed man. No longer a supervillain who needs to be the baddest of the bad guys, he’s now domesticated, with his three adorable adopted daughters, his hilarious gibberish talking, Tic-Tac-looking minions, a freaky dog and an evil scientist assistant (Russell Brand) whose focus is now making jams and jellies. It is, however, Gru’s evil genius past that makes him the perfect candidate to help the Anti-Villain League. A new threat is emerging and Gru is, apparently, the only person
who can help. An AVL agent named Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wiig) is deployed to kidnap Gru and bring him back to headquarters, where he’ll be forcibly recruited to help the cause. AVL believes the mastermind behind this emerging threat works in a mall. Yes, a mall. And that’s where Gru and Lucy will do their not-so-undercover work and, perhaps, fall in love, because that wouldn’t be predictable at all. As he’s fighting villains, he’s also Gru, the responsible dad who will do anything for his daughters, including dress up like a fairy princess for his youngest, Agnes. On the
flip side, he’s having trouble coping with eldest daughter Margo’s budding interest in boys. And then there are the minions. If you’re a fan of the first movie, then you’re a fan of the minions, and they do not disappoint here. Oh, of course, your kids will be delighted with the return of the fart gun because, well, who under the age of 10 doesn’t love a fart gun? While there’s really no redeeming educational value here, there’s no question that “Despicable Me 2” is one of your more likable family movies, with no shortage of laughs and heart.

Xxx XXX newďŹ lms GROWN UPS 2 BY JONATHAN SHEILS Sometimes it’s hard to know how to review an Adam Sandler film — or if it’s even worth it. The first “Grown Ups,â€? from 2010, earned a dismal 9% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes ... and then went on to earn hundreds of millions worldwide. Which means, of course, that we are now gifted with “Grown Ups 2,â€? about which I can say, well, it’s certainly no worse than “Grown Ups.â€? Like most Adam Sandler movies, it’s exactly like most Adam Sandler movies. It was directed by Dennis Dugan, who’s contributed not only “Grown Ups,â€? but several other titles in the Sander canon (from the high of “Happy Gilmoreâ€? to the low of “Jack and Jillâ€?). This movie stars all Sandler’s buddies and gleefully embraces lowbrow crudity even while promoting loving family values. In other words, Sandler has no need to mess with the formula, so we should probably be grateful that the script (which he co-wrote) has enough moments of easygoing good humor to get us through the grade-school jokes about bras and bathrooms. The biggest asset, of course, is the cast, whose offscreen camaraderie is evident in every scene. The filmmakers obviously know this, since they barely bother to craft an actual story line. For the most part, we tag along as recently retired Lenny (Sandler) and his life-long friends (Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade) complain about their wives (despite being married to Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph); ogle the single hotties in their hometown; and lament the good old days when they were in high school. Perhaps you’ve noticed that extreme wish-fulfillment is a major appeal of this franchise. The closest we come to a plot is a “Revenge of the Nerdsâ€?style rivalry with some moronic frat boys (guided, amusingly, by Taylor Lautner). This bitter feud comes to a head at a cleverly staged ’80s-themed party at Lenny’s house. So really, what is there to say? You know what you’re going to get, and that is, indeed, what Sandler delivers. It’s juvenile, it’s obvious and it’s crass. But with Sandler at the helm, at least it’s as easy to like as it is to forget.
TOP TIPS FOR SUMMER
Rising summertime temperatures and blue skies are as freeing for Scooter and Spot as they are for you and me. However, while summer beckons pets and people alike to get out there and play, this freewheeling season also poses its own risks for fourfooted adventurers. Fortunately, forewarned is always forearmed. Here are some of our safety tips for the pet who is ready to take on the world this summer, but has that twinge of thunderphobia and a certain attraction for fleas and ticks. 1. Make sure your pet is microchipped Summer invites free-roaming playtime for Fido, which unfortunately exacerbates the likelihood that he could stray too far from home while chasing that runaway kite. Microchipping acts as a high-tech form of insurance that your four-legged family member
can be safely reunited should you become separated. Not all microchip scanners read all microchips, however. So before having the chip implanted, be sure to check with your local animal shelters to ensure that the type of microchip your vet is implanting is compatible with their scanners. 2. Be protective poolside Don’t assume that your dog will take like a duck to water. Not all pooches are natural swimmers, so keep close watch over your dog as he’s lounging by the pool or lakeside. Pool water is also a far from nourishing way to relieve your pet’s thirst, as it contains chlorine and other chemicals that can cause stomach upset––be sure to keep plenty of fresh drinkable water nearby. your-pet-safe-all-summer-long.

IT’S SUMMER Summer is well and truly here, but here are some interesting facts about our favourite time of the year The first day of summer is known as the summer solstice and in the US it falls on June 20 or June 21 each year, depending on when the sun is furthest north of the equator. People in the Southern Hemisphere have their longest day of summer in December. Solstice comes from two Latin words sol and sistere. Sol means sun; stitium is the
verb which means to stand still. The first day of summer has been celebrated for centuries by people around the world. The names of the key summer months have Roman origins. June is named after Juno, who was the wife of Jupiter. Marc Antony named July after Julius Caesar and August was named after Caesar’s nephew, known as
Augustus. Even though this is the longest day of the year, it’s not the hottest, due to something called seasonal temperature lag, which means that it takes a while for the oceans to let their stored summer solstice heat back into the air. That’s why it tends to be hotter in July or August than in June. One of the more annoying parts of summer are the

mosquitoes, which have been around for 30 million years. It’s said they can find warm-blooded mammals from 100 feet away. Until the early 19th century there was no summer vacation. Depending on the location of schools breaks came either quarterly (town schools) or to coincide with planting and harvest seasons (rural schools). School summer vacations were invented by educator Horace Mann in 1840. Summer vacations in other parts of the world are much shorter than in the US.
France’s Eiffel Tower can grow by more than 6 inches in summer due to the expansion of the iron on hot days. The oldest song sung as a round in English is about summer. It’s called Summer is Icumen In. The word honeymoon has associations with summer. The Pagans used that name for the first full moon in June because they drank fermented honey (mead) as part of summer wedding celebrations. July is the month where most ice cream is sold in the
US. That’s why it’s National Ice Cream Month. Americans eat about 5.5 gallons of ice cream per year on average. Ice pops were invented by accident in 1905 by 11 year old Frank Epperson. He mixed soda and water and left the mixture out overnight with the stirring stick still in it. Since the temperature was low, the mixture froze. He patented the idea in 1924. Watermelon is not a fruit, but a vegetable. Many people enjoy throwing Frisbees in summer, but they were originally
designed as pie plates in the 1870s. Students started throwing them in the 1940s. In ancient times, most people swam in the nude; laws about decent swimming attire were created progressively from the 17th century onwards. The first Summer Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens. Women were first allowed to compete in 1900. Summer camps in the US date back to the start of the 20th century. There are more than 12,000 camps in the US. Of these, 7,000 are resident camps.

Withnail and I (1987) Withnail and I is a British cult ďŹ lm released in 1987, it was directed by Bruce Robinson and starts Richard E Grant and Richard Griffiths. The ďŹ lm is a dark comedy about the lives of two failing actors living in Camden Town London in 1969. The ďŹ lm starts at the end of a speed binge that has kept the two awake for almost three days in their squalid, run down at. The two decide to try escape London and head to a cottage in the English Countryside. They ďŹ nd the house practically uninhabitable with no food or heat, just an unhealthy supply of alcohol. The characters talk similar
to the way English graduates seeking value for money would talk, though it never sounds pretentious, how they speak always feels completely natural for their characters. At the end of the ďŹ lm Withnail recounts a soliloquy from Hamlet to a collection of dogs but it still ďŹ ts and makes sense within the context of the ďŹ lm. Withnail’s drinking in this movie has gone on to be something of legend to the extent that an almost lethal drinking game was made of it. Withnail is easily Grant very best role, all the performances are fantastic but Grant is in a league of his own in this ďŹ lm. It’s mind boggling to think that he is intolerant to alcohol and not in fact just drunk half the time. Along with being drunk, Withnail is
also paranoid (‘You’re not leaving me in here alone. Those are the kinds of windows faces look in at’) and arrogant. It’s often difficult to describe why a comedy is good without ruining some of the jokes, which is what I have been doing so far. I feel this review might have done a disservice to the ďŹ lm as a whole; my excessive descriptions for drunken Withnail could lead to this ďŹ lm being perceived as some sort of English Superbad which is certainly is not. Withnail and I is a melancholy ďŹ lm at heart, the two don’t drink and do drugs to get laid but in order to escape the depression and misery of their dead end lives. It is one of those few comedies that is funny and touching to an equal measure.
John SteinbeckThe Grapes of Wrath (1939) The Grapes of Wrath is the ninth novel written by American author John Steinbeck and published in 1939. The book centres on the Joad family from Oklahoma who migrate to California during the Dust Bowl. In California they ďŹ nd themselves the victims of racism and appalling working conditions at the hands of the native Californians that very nearly destroys them. The book was highly controversial in its day because of its depiction of Californians, especially the farmers and the police. Steinbeck was accused of being a socialist in league with the USSR against the US because of this book. He makes a point of saying that it wasn’t weather or misfortune
that made live for Oklahomans difficult but the cruelty of the men and women they come into contact with. The book has been banned and burned countless times but more than either of those, it has been sold time and time and time again. The book still sells approximately 100,000 copies per year. The novel paints a very sombre view of California for migrating farmers that were treated unjustly everywhere that they went. An example of this injustice later in the book is when the Joad family ďŹ nd a job picking peaches for ďŹ ve cents a box. There is a strike occurring outside the farm because the previous workers had had their pay cut in half to two and a half cent a box. After a few days the police violently break up the protest and the following morning the wages for the new workers are cut to two and a half cent per box. The Grapes of Wrath is
DJ Shadow Endtroducing‌ (1996)
at its heart; a sad, melancholy commentary on how divides of wealth turn people against their fellow men. It’s the type of book that could change perspectives or just inform on the treatment of minorities and the poor in our world.
An entire album based on samples. The only equipment used on this album was a sampler, a turntable and a tape recorder. The artist insisted that it be considered a hip-hop album, to the extent that he would go into record stores and move the album from the electronic to the hip-hop section. Despite this, I couldn’t think of an album as genreless as Entroducing. The album melds rock, jazz, hip-hop, electronic, funk, metal and blues all into one. None of the samples ever feel out of place, everything melds perfectly together. Take the third track ‘The Number Song’ as an example. In this song alone the artist samples from metal group Metallica and funk groups The Third Guitar, Creations Unlimited and Pearly Queen. It’s a mad mix and a testament to Shadow’s skill that it all works so well together. It’s mind boggling to think that all these disparate and different sounds and
genres can all come together so well song after song. The fact that the vast majority of these samples were already 30-40 years old when this album was made gives it a rich, organic sound that is usually incompatible with innovative and daring new techniques. In fact the only other album I can think of that melds extreme experimentation with a warm, homely sound as well as this is the Pink Floyd debut album. Of course sampling itself wasn’t innovative by 1996 but at this level it was something previously unimaginable. For an album with almost no original sounds in it, it’s amazing the extent to which the album sounds like nothing you have ever heard before. Other than a few exceptions like Metallica and Bjork, Shadow utilizes very obscure, forgotten music mostly found by pillaging dark clammy record bins for hours on end. Never has the term ‘Plunderphonics’ been a more applicable description for an album. Endtroducing‌ is simply one of the best albums ever made. Shadow in 62 minutes creates a whole separate world that is endlessly creative, intriguing and beautiful.

The treasurer of the local sports club, John Lacey, was counting the receipts after a table quiz night in the pavilion. Collecting the silver coins togehter, he said: ‘The total amount of money here is in 50pence, 10-pence and 5-pence coins, and is £195.50.’ John went on to explain that there were twice as many 10-pence coins as 5-pence coins and the number of 5-pence coins was a multiple of the number of 50-pence coins. ‘ But I am not going to tell you what that multiple is,’ said he, ‘because I want you to tell me how many of each of the coins make up the money. KILKENNY REPORTER 7 8 2013
Golf Notes – Callan Presidents Prize Two years ago John O Dwyers Presidents Prize was Marty Parker who produced an incredible total of 44 points. Marty ,a native of Kilkenny city, had joined Callan back in 1982 and has been a wonderfully popular member down through the years. That was Martys first “major” and this weekend when John Kinchella proudly put up his prize as President 2013 Marty repeated the trick. Marty spreadeagled the field with an incredible 46 point total to capture another massive prize. 46 points was a magnificent haul which saw him over the line by 5 shots. John Healy is in wonderful form at the moment and continued this with a fine 41 point total to take second following a count back with James Tierney and Paddy Donovan third and fourth on the same score. Brian Doheny took the gross honours with Niall O Sullivan taking second gross. 150 golfers took part in the event which saw John Kirwan take the Seniors prize while the Past Presidents award went to John Grace from Kilkenny. The front nine prize went to Michael Murphy from Kilmanagh with 21 points while Michael Dempsey took the back nine honours with
25 points. This August bank holiday weekend was a great celebration of golf in Callan Golf Club with some wonderful scoring and a big number of golfers taking part. John Kinchella himself was thrilled with the response from members and the display of his fellow RGA member, Marty, in taking the top prize. The music and sing song
later was enjoyed by all who attended. Well done to all for their efforts in making this competition such a huge success this weekend and particularly to Marty for his wonderful achievement.
Voluntary Help THANKS to all for their wonderful help around the club over the past few weeks. There has been huge efforts made in
all aspects of the club, course and shop and those efforts are hugely appreciated. For anyone looking to help out in any way please approach a committee member to express an interest. A special thanks to Ormonde Construction for the loan of their machine which was invaluable in helping a team led by Pat Cunningham clean the pond on the first hole.
