Following recent inquiries about the future of HSE properties by the Killarney Advertiser, the HSE South West has provided an update on several projects aimed at developing and improving healthcare services in the area.

• Killarney Primary Care Centre

"We are acutely aware of the huge need for a primary care facility in Killarney," stated a HSE official.

The recently approved planning application for a facility on the grounds of the Áras Phádraig site, a joint venture with Kerry County Council, is expected to take up to three years to complete.

• Killarney Injury Unit

The HSE also confirmed plans for a Killarney Injury Unit at St Columbanus, the current location of Killarney Community

Once the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit at the old St Finan's Hospital site is finished, residents and staff will transfer, allowing development of the Injury Unit to proceed.

"We hope to have this much-needed facility ready within a short time frame," the official said, indicating a matter of months.

• Killarney Community Nursing Unit

The Killarney Community Nursing Unit project, part of a Public Private Partnership (PPP), is facing delays.

The HSE is working with the contractor to

confirm a revised completion date. "The initial project timeline had projected that commissioning of the building could begin in Q1 2025, but as construction is still underway this timeline has been revised," the official explained.

While an exact timeframe for the move remains uncertain, the HSE aims to relocate residents to the new 130-bed unit as soon as possible this year. A more detailed timeline will be shared once the building is ready for registration with HIQA.

• Lands at the Former St Finan's Campus

"The former Saint Finan’s is currently be-

ing reviewed by the Land Development Agency as to its potential future use," the official added.

• Councillor Queries

At Wednesday's Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr John O'Donoghue inquired about the location of the proposed minor injuries clinic, reiterating his belief that it should be located at the soon-tobe-vacated District Hospital.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae requested a meeting with the HSE to discuss concerns regarding various HSE properties in the district, including St Finan's, the District Hospital, and St Columbanus Home.

Killarney tackles traffic congestion

Traffic congestion in Killarney was a hot topic at this week's Killarney Municipal District meeting. Cllr John O'Donoghue sought details on the council's plans to alleviate the issue by summer 2025.

In response, the council outlined several measures, including improved signage and roadway adjustments. New traffic and parking signs will be erected, and public realm facilities will be adjusted to improve traffic flow. The council will also introduce more 15-minute set-down parking spaces.

As part of the congestion plan, the council will be rolling out the bus stop enhancement scheme and pausing non-emergency roadworks during peak summer periods.

Killarney is piloting a smart demand-responsive bus scheme, allowing TFI Local

Link users to book services in real-time based on passenger demand. The council is actively seeking additional parking options near the town centre for the summer months. A pilot project is also underway to improve parking for disabled drivers by verifying blue badge usage in real-time.

LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS

Long-term plans include active travel

infrastructure schemes such as the Park Road and Flesk cycleways, improvements to New Road, and the Safe Routes to Schools program.

The Strategic Link Road A-C, connecting Park Road to the Killarney Bypass N22, and the Inner Link Road linking New Street to High Street, are key projects aimed at reducing town center traffic.

Construction of the Bóithirín na Gabhann

Inner Link Road project is expected to begin in Q4 2025, subject to funding.

CLEENEY ROUNDABOUT TRAFFIC FLOW

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae raised concerns about traffic flow at Cleeney Roundabout. The council confirmed that lane configurations on the N22 north of the roundabout will be modified as part of improvement proposals between Cleeney and Aghadoe.

NEW ROAD/PORT ROAD JUNCTION

Cllr Healy-Rae also expressed concerns about a footpath build-out at the New Road/Port Road junction. The council clarified that the build-out was designed to shorten pedestrian crossing distances and slow traffic, and is functioning as intended.

20 years of Murphy's Ice Cream on Main St

Murphy's Ice Cream, a Dingle-founded company with a popular location on Main Street, Killarney, has been awarded a 2025 Irish Food Writers' Guild (IFWG) Food Award.

The award recognises the company's commitment to sustainability and ethical food production and comes on the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Main Street outlet.

Paula McIntyre, chair of the IFWG, highlighted the issue of "greenwashing" in the food and drinks industry, where companies use misleading marketing tactics to appear sustainable. She said that Murphy's Ice Cream represents genuine sustainable practices.

Murphy's Ice Cream was specifically recognised for its use of local, inventive flavours, including milk from Kerry Cows and ingredients sourced from nearby

farms.

The company was founded in Dingle in 2000 by brothers Sean and Kieran Murphy, with a goal of making the best ice cream in the world. The Killarney location opened in 2005.

The IFWG awards, now in their 32nd year, are based on quality, integrity, and sustainable practices. Murphy's Ice Cream uses locally sourced ingredients, including free-range eggs, sea salt from Dingle, seasonal fruits, honey, and Irish whiskey.

Una Fitzgibbon, Director of Marketing at Bord Bia, praised the IFWG awards for celebrating the excellence and integrity of Irish food producers.

Cllr O'Donoghue calls for Muckross entrance clean up

At Wednesday's Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr John O'Donoghue raised the issue of the unkempt appearance of the entrance to Muckross House.

He highlighted the three different levels at the Front Gate entrance to Muckross House and Gardens, used for jaunting cars and car parking, and the neglected state of the surrounding shrubbery and

flower garden areas.

O'Donoghue requested that either the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) or the council take responsibility for tidying up the area before the start of the tourist season.

The Killarney MD Office confirmed that they will carry out the necessary gardening work to improve the appearance of the car park and entrance.

Legion GAA has made history by becoming the first GAA club in the country to secure funding through the Erasmus+ Sports programme.

This groundbreaking achievement will see the club tackle key challenges like coach retention, recruitment, and development through an innovative training initiative.

The announcement was made tohis week by Sean Kelly MEP, alongside representatives from Killarney Legion GAA and Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership (KRSP).

The successful application, supported by KRSP and Kerry County Council, will enable at least ten Legion coaches from both male and female teams to travel to the Club La Santa sports resort in Lanzarote, Spain.

During their stay, the coaches will participate in unique "job shadowing" experiences, working alongside the Club La Santa ‘Green Team’ of professional instructors and coaches. They will observe and learn from a wide range of classes and sports, gaining valuable insights into modern training techniques.

The project, titled "Multisport Coach Shadowing for Multi-age Fitness & Conditioning," aims to equip Legion's volunteer coaches with the skills and knowledge needed to enhance athletic development, fitness, and strength and conditioning for players of all ages and abilities. This will include observing sessions like Football Fitness, Track Athletics, HIIT, CrossFit, and various recovery and coordination exercises.

Brian Looney, the Legion minor team coach who spearheaded the application, said the project's potential to revolutionise grassroots coaching.

"Erasmus+ offers a novel approach to coach development," he explained.

"The training we received from Léargas was invaluable, and we're excited to share the knowledge gained with our players."

Sean Kelly MEP praised Legion's initiative. He said: "It's wonderful to see

a GAA club, especially one from my hometown, taking advantage of Erasmus+," he said. "I encourage other clubs in Kerry and beyond to explore these opportunities."

The €20,000 funding will allow Legion coaches to immerse themselves in a professional sports environment, observing preparation, participating in sessions, and receiving feedback from experienced instructors. Upon their return, the coaches will share their learnings through a project report and implement new techniques within the club.

This landmark achievement demonstrates Killarney Legion GAA's commitment to continuous improvement and sets a precedent for other GAA clubs to explore the benefits of Erasmus+ Sports funding.

Concerns raised over local gardaí covering Sneem

Public representatives have raised concerns over the reallocation of Killarney-based garda patrol cars to incidents in South Kerry, potentially leaving Killarney vulnerable to crime.

Local TD Danny Healy-Rae highlighted the issue in the Dáil this week during a debate on policing and community safety. He pointed out that with the reduction of garda stations in the region, response times to incidents in Kenmare and surrounding areas have increased significantly.

“If something happens down in Sneem,

it takes a good hour for the patrol car to come from Killarney and a good half an hour to come from Kenmare or Waterville. That place is very exposed as a result of the way the force is being divided,”

Healy-Rae stated.

The concern is twofold: not only does it take longer for gardaí to reach incidents in Kenmare, but while a Killarney-based patrol car is covering Kenmare, it leaves Killarney itself more exposed.

Healy-Rae stressed that the reduction in garda numbers along both sides of the Kenmare River and Kenmare Bay has left many small harbours and piers vulnerable, particularly in areas like Sneem,

Ardgroom, and Lauragh.

“There are many small piers and harbours that are totally exposed and available to those bringing drugs into our country. Our county is riddled with drugs at present, and we need a patrol car available to monitor these areas,” he said.

Healy-Rae called for increased Garda resources to address the issue, that crime is on the rise and that criminals have more ways to operate than in the past. He urged the government to restore garda presence in these rural areas to ensure the safety of residents and to combat the growing drug problem.

Hayfield hotels partners with cancer charity

The Hayfield Family Collection, owners of the Great Southern, Killarney Royal, and Hayfield Manor, has announced Breakthrough Cancer Research as its official charity partner for 2025.

Dóchas Drama Group thanks audiences after successful run

Dóchas Drama Group has thanked the Killarney community for their support during their recent production of two one-act plays, The Tinker's Wedding and Alternative Accommodation

The plays were performed at the Killarney Avenue Hotel to full houses, with audiences enjoying the contrasting themes of each production.

"It was so rewarding to see full houses

and the enthusiastic responses," said Liz Ryan, one of the directors. "Your support made the months of learning lines and researching materials more than worthwhile."

The group extended thanks to second directors Mabel Counihan as well as the backstage crew and front-of-house staff.

"We hope to see you all again soon," added Ryan.

Liebherr inspires students during Engineers Week

Liebherr Container Cranes hosted 275 students from 11 Cork and Kerry schools during Engineers Week 2025.

The event aimed to spark interest in engineering careers. Students experienced a presentation on engineering pathways and toured Liebherr's manufacturing facility. They observed the design and fabrication of container cranes and saw

demonstrations of advanced machinery, including automatic welders and robotic systems.

Students also explored the future of crane technology in Liebherr's Research and Development centre, witnessing advancements in automation and remote control. Interactive demonstrations included a 3D crane simulation and a mini crane network.

Kudos announce Family Fun Day and Community Awards

The Killarney Advertiser, in partnership with several local businesses and the Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, has this week announced the launch of Kudos – a new initiative designed to bring the community together through uplifting events.

This year, Kudos will deliver two hyper-local events. In late summer, the new community group will host an epic FREE Family Fun Day for everyone to come and enjoy. Locals can look forward to lots of great food, live music, and plenty of family-friendly entertainment.

Later in November, the group will present its first-ever Kudos Community Awards – a local awards ceremony celebrating the outstanding contributions made by individuals and organisations in Killarney. At the launch, Cormac Casey, owner of the Killarney Advertiser and KC Print, shared his enthusiasm for the new initiative:

"In the same week that we [Killarney Advertiser] proudly celebrate 52 years, we’re thrilled to launch our new community initiative – Kudos. When my father, Danny, founded this free weekly in 1973, he believed Killarney deserved its own newspaper, something that

would connect the community. Now, with the support of our business and Chamber partners, we are looking forward to pouring that same local pride and connection into two fantastic free events this year."

The initiative has already received strong support from numerous local businesses that share the Killarney Advertiser’s community-first values, none more so than Killarney Credit Union. Mark Murphy, CEO expressed his support at the launch: "We are very happy to be involved in this community initiative! Killarney schools to get new special classes

Minister for Children, Disability and Equality

Norma Foley TD has announced the addition of four new special classes in the Killarney district for the 2025/2026 school year.

This initiative aims to improve access to education for children with special educational needs.

The new classes will be established at Lissivigeen National School, Faha National School, St Brendan's College, and Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore. Each class will have a capacity for six pupils and will be staffed with a dedicated teacher and special needs assistant.

"Improving access to education for children with additional needs is a key priority of mine," said Minister Foley. "This addition of new special classes in Kerry schools represents further progress towards this goal. I want to thank all our local schools who are working so hard to make this happen in conjunction with the Department of Education and the National Council for Special Education.” Building projects are currently underway across the country to provide new or refurbished classrooms for the special classes. Nationwide, 400 new special classes and 300 new special school places will be available for the upcoming school year.

National Park plants 600 for Tree Week

Staff from Killarney National Park planted 600 trees, mainly native sessile Oak, Alder and Willow for National Tree Week 2025, which is scheduled from Sunday, March 9 to March 16.

The plants are located at the Port Road

entrance to Knockreer Estate.

This annual event, organised by the Tree Council of Ireland in partnership with Coillte, celebrates the importance of trees and forests in fostering a sustainable future. The theme for 2025 is ‘Planting Trees, Growing Together.’

Electronic notice board proposed for Market Cross

At the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr Marie Moloney proposed the installation of an electronic notice board at the Market Cross in Killarney.

The board would provide the public with up-to-date information on local events and other relevant town news.

In response, a council official acknowledged that signage placement is a key component of the Killarney Destination and Experience Development Plan. However, the official said the need to carefully consider factors such as planning regulations, pedestrian and vehicle safety, and architectural impact. The council also said that securing suitable funding for such a project would be essential.

crossing requested for Athletic FC entrance

Cllr John O'Donoghue has requested a pedestrian crossing at the entrance to Killarney Athletic Football Club on the Woodlawn/ Ballycasheen Road.

Previous requests were denied due to insufficient footfall. However, at Wednesday's Killarney Municipal District meet-

ing, O'Donoghue argued that the club has nearly 800 playing members, mostly juveniles, who are driven to the field, contradicting Active Travel goals.

The Killarney MD Office will conduct a survey of the road and work with property owners and the club to explore the option of a pedestrian crossing.

STRICTLY GOES COUNTRY FOR IRISH CANCER SOCIETY: The Killarney-South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society is hosting a "Strictly Goes Country" fundraiser at the INEC on March 8. The event will feature 22 dancers performing line dances choreographed by Cassie Leen. This is the sixth time the branch has held a Strictly-themed fundraiser, but the first with a country twist. Clonkeen woman publishes book on Killarney IRA Soldier

Mary O'Donoghue from Coolcurtoga, Clonkeen, has overcome a battle with oesophageal cancer to write a book about local IRA soldier Fred Healy.

O'Donoghue was inspired to research Healy's life after hearing his name mentioned on a television programme about Kanturk jail.

She pieced together his story, from his youth in Islandmore to his experiences in World War I and his involvement in the Irish War of Independence.

The book launch will be a double celebra-

tion, coinciding with International Women's Day. Mayor of Killarney Maura Healy

Rae will launch the book at Killarney Library on March 8 at 12pm.

A local launch will follow at the Kerryway Bar on Saturday, March 15 at 8pm.

All proceeds from the book sales will benefit Recovery Haven Kerry.

Supermac's Killarney wins Outlet of the Year

Supermacs Park Road has been named Franchised Outlet of the Year at the Supermac's Annual Awards in Limerick.

Eileen McCarthy and manager Damian Czaolinski accepted the award from Supermac's Managing Director Pat McDonagh.

The award recognises achievements in service, operations, marketing, and public relations.

The Deli at Obama Plaza also won Deli of the Year at the event.

Pat McDonagh praised the winning teams, noting the strong competition among 120 Supermac's outlets.

Rathmore Community Council will continue its tradition of hosting Kerry's first St Patrick's Day parade on March 9 at 2pm.

All-Ireland winner and Rathmore LGFA star Danielle O'Leary will be the Grand Marshal. The parade theme is ‘Follow Your Dreams’.

Prizes will be awarded for best float, vintage vehicle, commercial float, agricultural float, and best-dressed pet. Participants include Rathmore GAA, Rathmore LGFA, Millstreet Pipe Band, and Cullen Pipe Band.

The parade has been held annually since 2011 and always takes place the week before March 17.

Killarney Park Hotel to unveil renovated rooms and gardens

The Killarney Park Hotel will reveal the first phase of its renovations on April 4.

This includes 69 newly designed guest rooms, suites, grounds, and gardens.

The hotel, a family-owned five-star property, has completed this phase of its refurbishment, incorporating a rebranding with the motto ‘time made richer’.

The renovation, designed by McCauley Daye O'Connell Architects, draws inspiration from Kerry’s landscapes and history.

The rooms feature nature-inspired hues, local materials, and custom joinery.

Liebherr staff donate €12,360 to Cashel Ward

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd Sports and Social Club presented a €12,360 donation to the Cashel Ward Fund at University Hospital Kerry this week.

The funds were raised through ticket sales at the club's Christmas Party and a Christmas raffle in December 2024.

Trainee chef wins two medals

at Chef Ireland Competition

Iryna Kravchenko, a chef trainee from Killarney studying on the City & Guilds Diploma in Food Production and Cooking Programme, has won two medals at the Chef Ireland Competition.

The competition, held at the RDS last month and hosted by The Panel of Chefs

of Ireland, saw Kravchenko receive a gold medal for the Hand-Crafted Chocolates Competition and a Silver medal for the Hot Pudding Souffle Competition.

Everything that can be done should be done to ensure that Killarney is not only a beautiful place to visit but is also a green destination that cares for and protects its environment, a public meeting to highlight the town’s ambition to be Ireland’s first sustainable town by 2030 was told.

Given the scenery, lakes and rich biodiversity that attracts visitors from all over the world, the town has a great deal to protect and preserve and everybody has a role to play, local businessman Mike

Stack, chairman of a Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce sub-committee on sustainability, told the gathering in the Killarney Plaza Hotel.

“We want everyone, tourists and locals alike, to ensure that Killarney’s natural beauty can be enjoyed by generations to come – it’s not here just for our current generation,” he insisted.

Mr Stack said conservation is at the heart of the Sustainability 2030 vision and safeguarding the environment is also protecting the very foundation of the tourism industry and ensures the wellbeing of the town and its people.

The popular Spa GAA Academy returned last Saturday 1st March, and were joined by an exciting addition to the club – a new mascot!

It was a great turn out for the first session back, with close to 200 kids in attendance And it was a session to remember for the future stars, as the new club mascot made its first appearance, creating an exciting buzz and atmosphere for all those in attendance!

In conjunction with the mascot's introduction, the club has announced an exciting competition inviting children to come up with a name for their new furry friend This competition is a wonderful opportunity for the young members to exercise their creativity and feel even more connected to the academy, with the winner being announced at the end of the month

Open to boys and girls from 3+ years, the Spa GAA Academy focuses on developing fundamental movement skills in a fun, supportive environment, with membership free for U6s.

Killarney Musical Society ready for ‘Evita’ premiere

Killarney Musical Society is in the final stages of preparation for its highly anticipated production of Evita, set to open at the INEC next week. Performances will take place on March 11 to 13.

After months of rehearsals, the society is ready to bring the iconic musical to life. The production promises an emotional journey through the life of Eva Peron, featuring Andrew Lloyd Webber's memorable score.

The show boasts a talented cast, a 16-piece orchestra led by musical director Jimmy Brockie, and choreography by Stephen O'Rian. Liam Butler directs the production, which will feature stunning sets, costumes, and lighting.

Killarney Musical Society thanked its patrons, sponsors, and the local community for their support. They also thanked the schools, hotels, and other venues that provided rehearsal spaces.

Community College leads the way with reusable cup initiative

Killarney Community College has become the first school to partner with 2GoCup, a company dedicated to providing reusable cup solutions.

Thanks to a generous donation from the KCC Parents' Council, the school has received 200 reusable cups which will be distributed to senior cycle students.

This initiative, led by teacher Tara O'Shea, aims to reduce the school's environmental impact and raise awareness about the issue of single-use plastic waste.

As part of the programme, Ms O'Shea conducted a series of workshops for students, focusing on the impor-

tance of sustainability and the effects of disposable cups on the environment.

"This partnership with 2GoCup is another example of our ongoing commitment to sustainability," explained Ms O'Shea. "We want to educate our students about the environmental consequences of their choices and empower them to make a difference."

During the workshops, students learned about the staggering number of disposable paper cups used in Ireland each year – over 200 million – and the fact that very few of these cups are actually recyclable due to their plastic lining.

This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for sustainable alternatives, such as those offered by 2GoCup.

is not only reducing waste but also fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. The initiative serves as a practical example of how small changes can collectively make a big impact.

A Parisian adventure to remember

Students and staff from Killarney Community College embarked on a memorable trip to Paris, experiencing the city's iconic landmarks, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine.

The trip included a comprehensive tour of historical sites like Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, Place de la Concorde, Trocadéro, Pompidou Centre, Napoleon’s Tomb, and the Arc de Triomphe.

They also delved into the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles and admired

masterpieces at the Louvre Museum, including da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Exploring the artistic district of Montmartre, students climbed the steps of Sacré-Cœur for panoramic city views.

Evenings were spent savouring authentic French cuisine and practicing conversational skills in local restaurants, including a charming crêperie.

A highlight was a spontaneous game of football with Parisian teenagers, showcasing a unique cultural exchange.

A boat cruise along the Seine offered

breathtaking night-time views of illuminated landmarks, especially the sparkling Eiffel Tower.

A day at Disneyland Paris provided excitement and fun, while visits to local markets allowed students to experience the bustle of Parisian life.

For many, the trip was more than just sightseeing—it was about stepping outside their comfort zones, building friendships, and seeing their language skills come to life in ways that a classroom could never replicate.

“This trip was an incredible experience,” said one student. “It was

amazing to see everything we had learned in class come to life. Speaking French in real conversations, ordering food, asking for directions—it made me so much more confident.”

The staff were equally proud of what the students took away from the experience.

“Watching the students embrace the culture, communicate in French, and truly immerse themselves in the Parisian way of life was a privilege,” said one of the accompanying teachers.

“Beyond the history and the landmarks, this trip gave them memories and skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.”

Rotary Ireland District Governor visits local club

Rotary Ireland District Governor Seamus Parle recently visited Killarney Rotary Club to celebrate the club's achievements and mark Rotary International's 120th anniversary.

Parle, accompanied by his wife Carmel, was welcomed by Killarney Rotary Club

President Ciara Irwin Foley. He spoke about his role and highlighted various Rotary projects, including the Daisy Lodge Respite Centre, Shelterbox, and the Polio Plus eradication project.

During the visit, Parle announced local president Ciara Irwin Foley's appointment to two national roles: Assistant Governor for Zone 9 and co-ordinator

of the National Rotary Youth Leadership Development team.

“I has been involved at local level as a member since 2001 following in the footsteps of my father Peter who was a member since the Club was first founded in Killarney in 1983,” she said.

Ciara joined when her dad passed away and was the first female member in Killar-

ney. She held the presidency previously in 2007-2008.

Musical instruments strike a chord in Kerry!

In 2023, the Library Services, Environment Office, Arts Office, and Integration Department of Kerry County Council, along with Music Generation Kerry, invited anyone who was considering donating unused musical instruments to do so through their local library.

That call was met with great generosity from the people of Kerry, and Kerry Library continue to welcome dusty keyboards, long-forgotten guitars, violins, and even an electric organ!

If you would like to contribute to this wor-

thy project, check your attics and sheds for unused instruments and bring them to your local library.

Music Generation Kerry evaluates all donated instruments and compiles a comprehensive catalogue. Through this initiative, these instruments are made available for borrowing to all residents of Kerry.

Deirdre Johnson, Music Generation Kerry Coordinator, describes the importance of the project as: "The Musical Instruments Project is a powerful initiative that gives people the opportunity to borrow instru-

ments from their local library, just like they would a book. This access to music opens doors to creativity, skill-building and performance, helping to boost confidence and self-expression. When everyone has the chance to learn and play music, they gain more than just a new skill - they gain a sense of pride, accomplishment and well-being."

MTU-based entrepreneur launches innovative online motor club

A Clonakilty native based at Munster Technological University (MTU) in Tralee is about to launch a new web-based motor club that promises to revolutionise how enthusiasts plan and enjoy their driving experiences.

Peter O’Regan, currently participating in Enterprise Ireland’s New Frontiers programme at the Tom Crean Centre in MTU, is the driving force behind Tigre Motor Club, an innovative online platform and AI Road Trip Planner set to launch in early March, coinciding with Local Enterprise Week (March 4-8).

O’Regan’s passion for motorsport ignited in his childhood when he watched the legendary West Cork Rally from the roadside in Ring Village.

Milltown children learn to grow their own food

Local children from Nagle Rice National School in Milltown have launched the 2025 SuperValu ‘Let's Grow’ initiative, a programme by SuperValu and Grow it Yourself (GYI) that will see over 1,500 primary school children in Kerry receive Growboxes this week.

The Growboxes contain seeds, compostable pots, and guides to help children grow their own food.

The initiative aims to teach children about growing food and healthy eating.

Nagle Rice NS, the 2024 programme winners, are among the participating schools. The programme will reach 170,000 children nationwide by the

end of 2025.

"This initiative is a powerful opportunity to equip children with essential life skills," said Ali Honour, Campus Director & Head of Food, GIY.

New pond created for endangered Natterjack Toads in Derrynane

A new pond has been created at Derrynane House and Historic Park to help protect the endangered Natterjack Toad.

The project is a partnership between the Office of Public Works (OPW) and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

The Natterjack Toad is Ireland's only native toad species and is found in only a few coastal areas in Kerry. Coastal erosion, made worse by climate change, has threatened one of the artificial ponds the toads rely on for breeding.

The new pond, built over the winter in a safer location, will provide a more secure breeding ground.

Natterjack toads take about 60 days to develop from spawn to toadlets, with spawning typically beginning in April.

OPW, explained the importance of the project: "The Natterjack Toads are very special because they're only found naturally in a handful of places in South West Ireland and is very restricted in its northern range in Europe. By creating this artificial pond we’re hoping to achieve an improved outlook for the Natterjack Toads at Derrynane, which can potentially be used as a stepping stone to spread to other areas in the locality.”

Fossa School roadworks prompt safety concerns

Ongoing roadworks at Fossa National School have caused significant safety concerns for pupils, parents, and staff.

The construction, taking place directly at the school's front gate, has resulted in heavy traffic congestion throughout the day, with the situation becoming particularly hazardous during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Teachers and parents have expressed serious fears about the potential for accidents, as vehicles manoeuvre in and out of the school entrance while children attempt to cross the road amidst the ongoing construction activity.

Local crews gear up for West Cork Rally

The Clonakilty Park Hotel West Cork Rally, starting next Friday, will see a strong contingent of Kerry drivers battling it out over eighteen stages across St Patrick's weekend.

Killarney and District Motor Club's Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin, with support from Reen's FIAT in Rathmore are the top seeds,.

They will defend their 2024 title in a Citroen C3 Rally 2.

Cronin aims to be the first Cork driver to win the rally back-to-back.

Several other Kerry crews will be participating, including Vincent O'Shea (Kenmare) / Eoin O'Donoghue (Killarney) in a Darrian T90 and Darren Young (Tralee) / Pa Lawlor (Tralee) in a Honda Civic.

Killarney drivers on the entry list include: Bob Moran (Glenflesk) in a Ford Escort and Sam Leech (Fossa) in a Honda Civic. John Corrigan (Waterville) competes in a Honda Civic.

Kieran Reen (East Kerry) co-drives for Cork’s Anthony O'Driscoll in a Peugeot 208.

Rally brothers’ story to be told at 50th Anniversary Circuit of Kerry Reunion

The 50th Anniversary reunion of the Circuit of Kerry Rally on Saturday evening will feature the story of two brothers John and Charlie Hickey from Killarney, who both drove Ford Escorts in the 1988 event.

Remarkably, they finished with an equal

time after two days of racing, clocking 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 39 seconds, placing them joint 11th overall.

An open invitation is extended to all past competitors, organisers, marshals, fans, and anyone connected to the Circuit of Kerry since 1975 to attend the launch and reunion on Saturday at the Rose Hotel from 6 pm to 9 pm.

The evening will begin with a formal launch where clerk of the course Jonathan O'Shea and his team will announce details of the 2025 rally. This will be followed by an informal reunion in Dott's Bar within the hotel. A display of Circuit of Kerry memorabilia, including programs and other items, will be available, and attendees are encouraged

to bring their own memorabilia to share. The 2025 rally route will include the classic Camp Mountain stage, a feature of the original 1975 event.

The Circuit of Kerry is part of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship, the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship, and the Moriarty's Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship. It will also host the new Dacia Sandero Rally Cup.

Following the success of the Kerry Winter Rally, the North Campus of Munster Technological University will serve as the rally's service park.

February car sales down 15%

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released their official 251 new vehicle registration statistics for February.

New car registrations for February were down 15% (14,012) when compared to February 2024 (16,432) (which had an extra day of trading). Registrations yearto-date are also down 0.8% (47,483) on the same period last year (47,850).

Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) declined by 8% (3,201) compared to February last year (3,486). Year to date LCVs are down 13.5% (9,471). HGVs (Heavy

Goods Vehicles) registrations are down 3% (292) in comparison to February 2024 (301). Year-to-date HGVs are up 0.9% (762).

Imported Used Cars have seen a 13.2% (5,599) rise in February 2025, when compared to February 2024 (4,946). Yearto-date imports are up 9.1% (11,203) on 2024 (10,271).

In February 2,524 new electric cars were

registered, which was 36% higher than the 1,856 registrations in February 2024. So far this year, 7,447 new electric cars have been registered representing a 25.1% increase compared to the same period in 2024 when 5,949 electric cars were registered.

In the new car market share by engine type for 2025, Petrol cars continue to lead the new car market at 27.88%, followed by Hybrid (Petrol Electric) at 23.76%, Diesel at 16.65%, Electric at 15.68%, and Plug-in Electric Hybrid at 14.30

Big win edges Kerry closer to league final

Ladies on brink of another Division 1 decider

Kerry are in a strong position to reach another league final following their 2-8 to 0-4 win away to Mayo on Sunday.

Mark Bourke’s side are now in second place in Division 1 following five rounds of action, with two fixtures (against Meath and Dublin) still to play.

Defending league champions Armagh lead the way on 15 points with the Kingdom three points (one win) back on 12. Kerry’s next opponents, Meath, sit in third on nine points. That home match against the Royal County will take place in two weeks’ time on Saturday, March 22 in Tralee, and Kerry now know that victory in that fixture will guarantee them a spot in the top tier final for the third year in a row.

Kerry’s last regulation league game will also be at home with the Dubs providing the opposition on March 29.

Kerry are looking over their shoulder in Division 1 as a narrow two-point defeat to Mayo has left them just above the relegation zone with just two games to go. The Kingdom now find themselves in sixth place on four points, just ahead of Tyrone (three points) with Derry (one point) languishing at the foot of the table.

One more win should be enough to ensure survival – six points almost always guarantees safety – but with tricky ties against All-Ireland champions Armagh and current Division 1 leaders Galway to come, the prospect of dropping down to the second tier is not the stuff of fantasy. Kevin McStay’s men raced out in front in the first period with Ryan O’Donoghue to the fore (his sideline kick before the break was superb). Were it not for a late goal by Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Kerry could have been in real trouble.

The visitors started the second half brightly and a string of scores by the Clifford brothers David and Paudie and the Geaney cousins Dylan and Paul quickly cut the deficit to two.

It was nip and tuck thereafter with Mayo still ahead by one in the closing moments, and after David Clifford’s two-point free was plucked from over the crossbar by Colm Reape, the Mayo crowd roared their team to victory. Matthew Ruane scored the match-clinching point to send the MacHale Park crowd into raptures.

The standings would be looking a lot worse for Kerry if Tyrone and Derry had managed to hold on to their substantial leads against Galway and Donegal respectively, but both failed to do so.

The Red Hand County escaped from Tuam with a draw while the Oak Leafers ultimately fell to a three-point defeat in Ballyshannon, which was certainly good news from a Kerry perspective.

Next up for Kerry is the visit of Armagh to Tralee on Saturday, March 15. The following day, Tyrone are away to Donegal and Derry host Mayo.

It’s possible that those matches will be

played under revised rules after FRC chair Jim Gavin confirmed that he and his associates have recommended amendments to the new laws currently being trialled in the National League.

As things stand, teams who are a man light can withdraw one of their attackers to make up the numbers when defending, and do likewise with defenders when attacking, leading many observers to question if getting a black or red card is actually a punishment at all. Gavin also said that according to the feedback they have received, the rule changes have been received warmly by most observers.

HELPING HANDS

When Brian Fenton was asked to help the Irish rugby team with their high fielding, he was following in the footsteps of Mickey Ned O’Sullivan. Eamonn Fitzgerald explains.

With the Triple Crown secure after that searching test away to Wales, Ireland won’t have it easy tomorrow (Saturday) at the Aviva Stadium where they will face France in Round 4 of the Six Nations. Kick-off will be at 1.45pm. France traditionally play with flair and a win will be very much in their game plan to keep their title hopes alive. By doing so they would deny a possible Grand Slam for Ireland. No doubt it will be a full house with so much at stake and an opportunity to show appreciation to rugby centurions Peter O’Mahony, Conor Murray and Cian Healy, the 3 Amigos of Irish rugby. Each has played more than 100 times for Ireland. This will be the last time they will wear the Irish geansaí at the Aviva. In an Irish team dominated by Leinster, O’Mahony has been the Munster powerhouse in his 13 years of international duty. He captained Ireland in last year’s Six Nations and was also the skipper for the Lions versus New Zealand in the opening test of 2017. Healy is Ireland’s most capped player (136) beating Brian O'Driscoll’s record. Murray has 124 caps but intends to play abroad.

I wonder how many Munster players will start or even come on tomorrow? Seems like Jack Crowley will have to sit it out to the preferred Sam Prendergast who is in situ. Crowley was a very promising GAA player and lined out with the Cork minor footballers. He was also a stylish hurler before concentrating on the oval ball in his Bandon Grammar School days.

In advance of the game in Cardiff, Ireland invited Brian Fenton to help in the preparations. The brilliant Dublin midfielder of the six-in-a-row is a regular visitor to Spa GAA with his father Brian Senior who played with the club for many years before settling in Dublin as a garda. By all accounts Brian’s visit to the Ireland Rugby camp was very productive, although many people wondered how a GAA player could assist an international rugby side. It has happened in the past, however…

MICKEY NED

Mickey Ned O’Sullivan, captain of the 1975 All-Ireland winning Kerry side, spent eight days in South Africa in 2006 helping to improve the high catching of their Super 14 teams. I spoke with Mickey Ned on Sunday

last after his Kenmare team played Legion in the East Kerry League and recalled our many previous conversations on sport, but specifically for this week’s column how rugby could benefit from the expertise of a Gaelic footballer.

Long before Gaelic football got underway after the founding of the GAA in Thurles in 1884, the traditional game of ‘caid’ was very prominent. It was a helter-skelter test of endurance, very much of a rough and tumble nature, featuring some of the elements of rugby.

Mickey Ned was the manager of the Limerick football team in 2006 but he was au fait with all sports as a PE graduate from Strawberry Hill in England in the era before you get that qualification at NIHE (now UL). He was a good friend of Conor O’Shea (Harlequins and London Irish), two Kerry sports stars of different codes. Conor is the son of former Kerry great Jerome O’Shea, that dashing, high-fielding Cahersiveen corner back who shared the Sports Star of the Week accolade with Tadhgie Lyne in that memorable win over Dublin, then the Dream Team. Last week we paid tribute to Johnny Culloty who was corner forward on that team which won the unexpected 1955 All-Ireland. Conor O’Shea was full back on the Irish rugby team where safe high fielding is a prerequisite, so he understood the value of the skill. Like father, like son. Mickey Ned was invited by the South African Rugby Union, embarking on a whistle stop eight-day tour of their five Super 14 clubs, to explain the rudiments of catching a ball above the head, Gaelic football style. Their High-Performance Programme targeted particular skills such as the high fielding, then a standout feature of Gaelic football, sadly heading for RIP in the past decade or so, but thankfully making a Lazarus type resurrection from what I have seen so far under the new rules.

The South Africans had always been aware of the Australians' ability to field above their heads which came from their AFL backgrounds. Jonathan Collard, the former English full back, was a friend of Conor O’Shea’s with London Irish and went along as a kicking advisor.

“I visited five clubs in four cities,” Mickey Ned recalls. “The Sharks in Durban, Cheetahs and Cats in Johannesburg, Bulls in Pretoria, and the Stormers in Cape Town. My brief was the high fielding. Many of the Irish have it from their Gaelic football background. The South Africans didn't want to go to their big rivals in Australia so they came to us (in the GAA) to improve fielding on a number of fronts.

“In Durban I said to the Sharks that I would show them 10 minutes of a clip of the 2005 All-Ireland final between Kerry and Tyrone. They were so impressed that they watched the whole game. They marvelled at the fielding of these

players who were not paid, with over 80,000 spectators in attendance.”

CROSS FERTILISATION

Cross fertilisation of sports is the fancy name for initiatives such as Mickey Ned’s. David Campese was one of the backroom team and knew about Gaelic football but the South Africans didn’t.

“In Pretoria, the Blue Bulls were so keen to learn, especially Victor Matfield and Bryan Habana. They were great guys. Habana had a great spring in his jump and excelled in fielding the ball over his head. Some of the club officials I spoke to felt that Gaelic football matches could become a product to be promoted on the world market and was even more entertaining than AFL.”

So what was Mickey’s role?

"The message I really wanted to get across was that good fielding in rugby can be as important to attack as defence. What I was trying to impress upon them was the type of try Shane Horgan scored in Croke Park against England. The aim was to create space and then utilising it to penetrate for a score. Naturally, timing is crucial.”

Mickey Ned and Cian O’Neill were invited by Jonathan Callard to spread the same gospel in England. For obvious reasons they declined the invitation but did meet him informally at Cork Airport and went through a lot of drills and techniques. In time Callard hoped that an England development squad would come over to UL for a week to specifically work with GAA coaches on aspects

Jack Russell was a fine hurler with his native Ballyhea, Blackrock, Avondu and UCC while studying medicine, winning two Fitzgibbon Cups with the Skull and Cross Bones team of the late 1920s. Anyone reaching that standard to play in Fitzgibbon is rated highly.

One day he was training on his own down in the Quad while other students were playing rugby close by. They were short a player and asked him to join them. He did and was a great success. However, the notorious Ban (Rule 27) was rigidly enforced in what was then the new Irish Free State following on the Civil War that ended officially in 1923 (like all wars, bitterness lasted for many years).

PREPARATION

Gaelic football coaches spend a lot of time analysing the preparation and techniques of other field sports but there is a lot to be learned and adopted from Gaelic football too. Strangely enough, many top GAA coaches are availing of the advice of rugby professionals, particularly in place-kicking. "It was one of the points that the former Springbok coach, Rudi Straeuli, made to me when I was there. He spoke of 'cross fertilisation' of sports. I was continually quizzed on what conditioning GAA teams did. There wasn’t any strength and conditioning in our playing days with Kerry. Neither did we do any gym work as part of our preparation.”

High catching in football has waned significantly in the past two decades. Ironically, it is a feature of Australian Rules and increasingly so in rugby union, particularly with the Ireland players. It is wonderful to see the pioneering work of Mickey Ned is deemed so important that Brian Fenton assisted in the preparations of the current Irish team.

Best of luck to Mickey Ned in celebrating with his former teammates the Golden Jubilee of Micko’s all-bachelor team of young ones of 50 years ago. Whew, tempus fugit. How much of the final do you recall?

CROSSOVER KINGS

It is rare enough for a GAA player to make it on to the Irish rugby team, but a few come to mind.

Russell was reported and the GAA authorities slapped a suspension on him, preventing him from playing his first love. He swore that he would never again play hurling and would play rugby for Ireland within one year, which he did. He was capped 19 times for Ireland as a second row in six Home Nations campaigns and also against the Springboks. He would certainly have won many more caps but at that time there were very few games - just the four countries, with three international games each year. Also time commitments to study medicine and the fact that there were no internationals during World War 2 denied him more caps. And there is a strong Killarney connection with Jack Russell. His daughter Mary married Dr John McCullagh, who was also a very fine hurler in his day. The name of Moss Keane also comes to mind. The Kerryman was the winner of three Sigerson Cups with UCC in Gaelic football. The same story as Jack Russell unfolded. He was playing in the Quad one day and some of his fellow students were playing rugby. Moss often told me that he had no clue about rugby, “but I was big, strong, willing to jump for a few high ones - and would add great weight to the scrum”.

He was cajoled into playing with a team from a local watering hole in an inter-pub challenge. It was too tempting for any student to turn down such a generous offer. The rest is history. He played as Moss Fenton during the years before the Ban was officially lifted and was picked to play for the Irish rugby team versus France in Paris January 1974, the same day as he was due to play with UCC in the replay of the Munster Club football final. He was there at full back for the drawn final.

He said he went for the spin on the plane to Paris for his first cap, although in his own admission he hadn’t a clue why all those penalties were given. They were rare enough in Gaelic. Unluckily for Russell, the Ban wasn’t lifted until the GAA Congress in Belfast in 1971. But Moss was able to go legit as Maurice Ignatius, a long ways from the Moss of Curnow.

There would be contrasting emotions after the latest instalment of the Killarney Derby which saw the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre packed to the rafters.

The Lakers knew that a win would almost certainly guarantee them a berth in the playoffs while the Cougars were fully aware that they were standing on the doorstep of relegation from the league. As with all local jousts form can go out the window and for long periods the Cougars belied the look of a team who had only won one of their previous nineteen clashes.

There was an added layer of intrigue with the presence of former Lakers coach Ron Howard on the Cougars bench but despite his undoubted prowess he has been unable to arrest his current team's slide. Manuel Suarez on the other hand has slotted in seamlessly to the Lakers mantra and following his latest win is targeting a place in the playoffs . And while you could argue that the quality of the play wasnt of the highest order the closeness of the exchanges made for compulsive viewing and a crackling atmosphere.

Not for the first time this season Mikah Blackwell would be the star turn for the Lakers but a look under the bonnet of the Lakers display would pinpoint other factors. Abdul Oladipupo displayed an accuracy from beyond the arc at pivotal stages, Oisin Spring put in a huge fourth quarter, Eoin Carroll , Rui Saravia and Jack O Sullivan showed a defensive prowess that was needed while Mark Shehan was bright throughout. Spring is very much the unsung hero of the Lakers squad and his seven point haul in the final quarter gave his side a cushion heading into the final minutes. He overcame an early setback with foul trouble but displayed a great mentality to make the difference in that crucial sector. He enjoyed the moment ," It was the best feeling playing inside a packed Sports Centre , it was electric . I got two early fouls and had to bide my time but when the call came in the fourth quarter I just had to put on a shift . Their number three (Iyan Hristov) is a great player and I had to just stay in front of him and I tried my best".

Blackwell hit his side's opening score in their first offence but Joshua Strongman replied straight away for the Cougars . Mark Sheehan hit a signature three with

Blackwell following suit to give their side an early advantage. The Cougars game plan revolved around Hristovs quick ball movement going inside to the twin threat of Ben Todd and Strongman and that duo managed to keep them in the conversation . Abdul Oladipupo hit the first of his three pointers as Darragh O'Callaghan and John Hughes put their shoulders to the Lakers wheel and with Blackwell in ebullient form the Lakers were in an early 19-14 lead. The second quarter was the Cougars best as they defended with a renewed effort and the Lakers struggled on offence. Strongman would strike early from the charity stripe but Darnell Snyers slipped in for the Lakers almost immediately . Blackwell hit either side of a Todd bucket as the Lakers pushed it out to 25 -19 but they would hit a drought after Snyers added a further two . Hristov, Todd and Adam Lenihan would capitalise on that dry run and leave the halftime score at 28-26.

The third quarter would see both sides up their scoring rate but it was the Cougars who made the better start to the half. Lenihan hit a lay up which Eoin Carroll responded to but a Hristov three gave the Cougars their only lead in the game. It only served to spur the Lakers on with Blackwell striking from downtown and Oladipupo netting from the corner. Snyers then joined the three point party but Strongman was still carrying the load for his side . Oladipupo then hit two in a row from downtown as the Lakers looked to seize control but Todd and Jack Lynch were having none of it for the Cougars as Blackwell made sure the Lakers noses were in front heading for home, 52-48.

The Lakers defence certainly upped the ante as the game wore on and this was never more apparent than it was in the final quarter.

Jack O Sullivan picked up the cudgels from Eoin Carroll on that count and Saravia was

getting anything he could in the way of any Cougars offence. That gave the Lakers the platform to push on . Spring got his final quarter underway with an early three and with the Cougars increasingly reliant on Strongman the Lakers defence got on top as Snyers cashed in at the other end . Blackwell nailed his free throws and some excellent hustle from Snyers yielded two more baskets for Spring. The writing was on the wall for Ron Howard's side as they visibly tired and Jack O Sullivan, Saravia and Blackwell made them pay with some spectacular crowd pleasing dunks. Todd and Fitzgerald added further Cougars points but the dye had been well and truly cast and it was the home sde that coasted

home on a 77-67 scoreline.

Speaking after the game Coach Suarez was glad to get the win to break the Lakers recent two game losing run." I think the most important thing today was the win and we played some really good defence and that brought us the win ". He was buzzing also at his first taste of a Killarney Derby." To be honest I didn't expect that amazing atmosphere and it's really good that the people of Killarney support their basketball. Our aim is to make the playoffs and we must remain loyal to our identity and keep pushing to see where the season will take us."

Mikah Blackwell was the game MVP with 32 points, Abdul Oladipupo hit 13, Darnell Snyers had 10, Oisin Spring and Rui Saravia had 7 apiece, Mark Sheehan 3, Jack O Sullivan 3 , Eoin Carroll 2, John Hughes, Draragh O'Callaghan , Jamie O Sullivan.

For the Cougars Joshua Strongman shot 23, Ben Todd 17, Iyan Hristov 15 and Andrew Fitzgerald 5.

The Lakers are at home again this Saturday night with Moy Tolka Rovers making the visit to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. They count former Laker Emilian Grudov amongst their number and with thirteen wins they sit in third place in the Northern Conference. They will provide a stiff test for the 7.30 tip off.

Meteors hand St Pauls first loss of 2025 with second-half surge

WOMENS SUPERLEAGUE

A strong second half performance inspired by American duo Emma Merriweather and Morgan Lenehan proved to be too much for Utility Trust St Pauls to handle and in the process handed them their first defeat of 2025.

Without ever hitting top form St Pauls led 37-34 at half time and if they were to maintain that advantage they would most certainly have targeted an improved second half showing. But things started to go wrong early in the third quarter and even though they managed to keep in touch with Meteors for the most part the introduction of Ka-

tie Walshe in the final quarter really put the seal on it .She hit consecutive three pointers that must have felt like daggers to the heart of James Flemings side. But all is not lost as St Pauls fate still lies in their own hands with a visit to Waterford next weekend and a possible mega clash with Fr Matthews on the last weekend of the regular season.

The first quarter saw Gracen Kerr and Lynn Jones hit early from outside and with Lorraine Scanlon finding her feet inside they led 8-4. Lenehan was pulling the early Meteors strings but it took a three from Catherine Connaire to get the visitors going. Kerr struck again but Emma Merriweather , who would prove to be a handful all night, started to make her presence felt. Alex Wittinger back

from injury started to heat up and as a consequence they led 18-15 . Lenehan and Franciska Treiliha hit the ground running early in the second quarter prompting a St Pauls timeout. Denise Dunlea ghosted in on a couple of occasions to good effect with Wittinger replying to Lenehans points. There was a period of Meteors dominance where they threatened to pull away but a Wittinger three point play and a strong finish from Kerr which yielded five points sent the home side to the locker rooms 37-34 clear.

A Wiittinger basket early in the third quarter gave no hint of what was impending as Meteors started to get a grip on proceedings. This was built on the dominance of Merriweather at both ends and the incisive play of Sarah Kenny and Catherine Connaire. It helped to open up a ten point lead, 49-39 and it took a Gracen Kerr three to stop that momentum. Improved play from Dunlea and Diop held

the gap at eight, 57-49 at quarters end. Wittinger again hit her sides opening points helping to cut the gap to six but the entry of Katie Walshe yielded her opening three. Rheanne O'Shea replied to that but Walshe was at it again, her brace of threes either side of a Grace Prenter bucket . That served to open up a fourteen point gap, 68-54 , and things didn't improve either with Merriweather netting and Prenter getting in on the three point act. Despite the best efforts of Wittinger and Diop Meteors were not to be reeled in with Treiliha and Connaire applying the finishing touches to the 8062 scoreline.

Alex Wittinger hit 23 points, Gracen Kerr 14 and Mathilde Diop 9 Denise Dunlea 6, Lorraine Scanlon 4, Lynn Jones 3 and Rheanne O'Shea 3.

Morgan Lenehan and Emma Merriweather were tormentors in chief with 18 apiece, Katie Walshe and Catherine Connaire 11 and Sarah Kenny 9. Next weekend sees St Pauls head to the South East for a joust with SETU Waterford Wildcats who lead the division. It's a repeat of the Round 8 clash pre Christmas where a late surge from the Wildcats carried the spoils. Tip off in the Mercy College Waterford on Saturday is at 5pm.

To be fair to the young Ballyhar side, they were missing a few players but still fulfilled the fixture. After not playing in two months, our boys started fast out of the blocks when Alex slotted home to give us an early lead, Leo added two more quickly after, one a blistered strike from outside box that went in off the post. Donnacha added a powerful header from a corner and Leo notched his hat trick all before the 25-minute mark. HT: 5-0. Understandably we dropped the tempo in the second half however we extended our lead when Leo got his 4th and our 6th. To their credit, Ballyhar grabbed one back and were playing some good football. However, the goal of the game came with some good work down the right sent Oisin away and he skipped past two defenders and crossed for Jack Fleming to finish low to the corner. Inter Kenmare came back into the game in the 2nd half and eventually pulled a goal

back but Celtic managed the game well to come away with the win.

TROPHY: Leeside United 0-3 Killarney Celtic. Holly Forrest 2, Ali Bowler. Celtic U16s made the journey to Cork a winning one last Sunday after a fine performance against Leeside United. Celtic struck for the decisive opener to lead at half time when Holly Forrest finished off a Sadbh O'Halloran pass. Holly Forrest doubled the lead after being put in goal by Niamh Brosnan. Ali Bowler sealed the win when she finished a corner to the net. Celtic now meet Maree Oranmore in a home tie in the last 8 on March 15th.

Killarney Legion GAA

JOHNNY CULLOTY: A sad week in the Club as we bade farewell to one of the icons of the GAA in not only the county but the country. Simply put Johnny was one of the greatest sportspeople the county has ever produced and as a club we were fortunate to have the benefit of his incredible knowledge. Johnny had an honour laden career as a player winning 12 Munster titles, 5 All Irelands and 5 league titles. He then moved into management with the Kerry senior team winning a further three National Leagues and a Munster title. He again answered the call of the county when helping Paidi O’Se with the Kerry U21s and Jack O'Connor with the Kerry Seniors to add further honours. Gaelic football wasn't his sole interest as

he won 4 National Hurling titles and An All-Ireland Junior Hurling title in 1961. All those honours are well documented but what you can't find on google is the influence he had on his own club. There was no job too big or too small for Johnny as he coached numerous teams over the years, and to coach the Legion U14 teams to seven East Kerry titles in a row was some achievement when you think of the changing cast each year. He held the role of Legion chairman while still managing the Kerry senior team, When the club set up home in Direen he took a huge interest in its development. As his son Donal said at his funeral mass he was involved in the sourcing and purchase of the original field and every improvement that had been made in the following thirty-three years Johnny had his shoulder to the wheel of it. Alongside Pat Healy, his brother in arms, they spent an incalculable amount of time in Direen, and the facilities today are a credit to the likes of Johnny, Pat, Pat Moynihan and their fellow committee members. But as Fr Pat O’Donnell said in his wonderfully sculpted homily it was Johnny's ability to deliver a perspective to any situation and also his modesty and humility. One memorable tale was when Jack O’Connor asked Johnny to come on board as a Kerry team selector and urged Johnny to embrace a mobile phone. Johnny's reply was "If you want a man with a mobile phone off you go but if you want a Kerry selector, I'll be at home for my dinner between 1-2 and my tea at 6pm any evening, you know where to find me". And while we as a club mourn his loss it is incomparable to that of his wife of 62 years Joan, sons Donal and Sean, daughters Brid and Orla and his extended family. But may they take comfort in knowing that someone so great will never be forgotten.

Spa GAA

MINOR: On Saturday afternoon a youthful Spa minor team travelled to Moyvane in the quarter final of the club championship. On a heavy pitch a physically stronger Moyvane team made the stronger start and after 20 minutes led by 9 points to 1. As the first half progressed our boys grew into the game and finished the half strongly, leaving the score at half time 11 points to 5. The boys made a good start to the second half but were unable to convert some good chances. Moyvane broke and scored a well worth goal. Credit to our lads, they never gave up and finished the game strongly leaving the final score 1:15 to 1:08. Thanks to Moyvane for an excellent game and we wish them all the best in the semi-final. Our boys will be out again next weekend in the semi-final of the shield. Big thank you to referee Tom McCarthy who had a good game officiating under the new rules.

ACADEMY: Our Academy returned on Saturday last between 10-11 with new and returning faces attending, our Academy

is open to boys and girls from 3+ years. We focus on developing fundamental movement skills in a fun, supportive environment. We offer free membership for U5s & U6s, making it even easier to get involved! At Spa GAA, we pride ourselves on being a friendly, inclusive club where every child feels welcome. While training is underway our coffee doc will be open, and our barista volunteers will be busy providing a wide variety of tea, coffee and treats. All money made from the coffee doc goes back into our Coiste na nÓg supporting the Academy and Juvenile teams throughout the year. All welcome!

COUNTY LEAGUE: The Senior team will open their Credit Union County League Division 1 campaign with a home game to Kerins O’Rahilly’s on March 16th while our

B team will get their Division 7B campaign under way with a home game to Austin Stacks the same weekend.

COISTE NA NÓG: The Club will hold an information/registration night to attract new members on Thursday 13th March from 6.30-7.30pm at the club hall. With an ever-increasing academy practically among the Under 6’s and Under 8’s we hope to recruit some additional mentors ahead of the start of the Academy in April.

MINORS: Kilcummin got off to the perfect start in their Keane's SuperValu Minor Football Club Championship with a deserving 2-15 to 1-8 win away to St. Senan’s in Mountcoal on Saturday in their Group D Quarter-Final. Leading at the break by the bare minimum 0-7 to 0-6 they were spurred on by two great 2nd half goals from Jack Ahern and Fionn McGuire. All 6 forwards got on the score sheet with Billy O’Donoghue scoring 5 points from play. Overall, it was a great team performance.

UNDER 15: Congratulations to our Under 15 Feile side who won out the annual Mick O’Brien U15 Football Tournament which was held at Nemo Rangers on Saturday. Continuing on from the good form of last year’s Super 10’s win in Munster the team defeated Nemo Rangers, Austin Stacks, Killarney Legion and Gaultier of Waterford before seeing off neighbours Killarney Legion in the final. Congrats to our captain Aidan Huggard and Daragh Keane on getting player of tournament.

The Cougars and the Wildcats produced an exciting game for the big attendance at the Sem Gym, the Cougars trailed 24-20 entering the final quarter but produced a strong final quarter scoring 18 points to secure a narrow win in an exciting finish. KERRY LEAGUE U18: Killarney Cougars 45 Bobcats 49. Cougars U18 boys played Ballymac Bobcats in the league at the Presentation Gym on Thursday last. Bobcats were unbeaten this season so far, but the Cougars produced a strong performance on the night going close taking the points. The Bobcats a physically strong big team held on to win by just 4 points in a good contest. Evan Cox was top scorer with 20, Dylan Bowler next up with 11 points. We will look forward to a re-match in the Plate Final later this month.

U14 BOYS KERRY LEAGUE: St Paul's 36 Killarney Cougars 63. The Cougars boys put in a massive performance at the Killarney Sport Centre. It was evident from the start that they were in confident mood for the game, the work rate and their application were excellent and as a result held a commanding lead at half time 3613. St Paul's to their credit regrouped and worked some nice scores but Cougars finished out strong to take the deserved win with an overall great team performance.

NATIONAL TRIALS: The rescheduled national water trials for the Irish rowing squad of 2025 are set for the next two weekends at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. This weekend will see Junior, U23, Adaptive and Senior ‘B’ triallists descend on Farran with Senior A triallists following next weekend. In the event of poor weather this weekend, all trials will be held next weekend. The trial schedule has suffered a number of postponements due to the bad weather. The club has a number of members due to partake in this weekend’s trials, best of luck to all the rowers and coaches.

MUNSTER: The Munster U12-U14 Indoor Championships were held in Nenagh last weekend. Killarney Valley AC had 24 athletes competing and all did very well and achieved personal bests. Fionn Spellman won the U14 Boys 60m Sprint in a time of 8.45secs. Conor Scannell came 3rd in the U12 Boys Long Jump while Olamide Smith came 3rd in the U13 Boys Long Jump. Teagan Lyne came 4th in the U13 60m Hurdles and Finian Swarbrick came 4th in the U13 High Jump and so both qualified for the National Indoors. Congrats and well done to all.

SENIOR MEN: The Killarney RFC senior men’s team continued their strong campaign in the Munster Junior League Division 3 with an impressive 25-14 victory over Scariff RFC at Fossa Beg. The team displayed resilience and determination, securing an important away win as they push for a strong finish in the league.

YOUTH RUGBY: It was a weekend of thrilling contests for Killarney’s underage teams, with some great performances across the board. U18.5 Boys: Killarney RFC and Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne RFC played out a thrilling 18-18 draw in the Munster Development Cup at Aghadoe. Both teams fought hard in a tightly contested match, with solid defensive efforts and some well-worked tries. Killarney progress on the first try scored rule. U18.5 Girls: The Killarney/Listowel/Iveragh Eagles squad travelled to Ennis to take on Ennis RFC in the Girls Clubs U18.5 Cup. The girls showed great spirit and teamwork in a highly competitive match. U16 Boys: A high-scoring encounter at Aghadoe saw Killarney RFC narrowly lose 3439 to UL Bohemians RFC in the Munster Development Cup. Despite the result, the team put in a strong performance and will take plenty of positives into their next match. U14 Boys: The U14 boys secured a fantastic 22-15 victory over Kilfeacle RFC in the Munster Bowl at Morrissey Park in the Quarter Final. A well-drilled performance saw them come away with a hardfought win.

ACTIVITY: Looking Ahead Killarney RFC continues to be a hive of activity, with all teams preparing for upcoming fixtures in their respective competitions. The club is also looking forward to hosting and par-

ERIN: Killarney Swimming Club came together last week to say goodbye to our Head Coach of 3 years Erin McNulty. Erin’s experience, coaching philosophy, leadership skills and the kind and generous way she supported our swimmers has seen a dramatic rise in our club presence over the past few years. We are confident that what Erin has instilled in our coaches and swimmers will continue to live on in our club for years to come. We are lucky, along with other clubs, to continue to have her support in the capacity of her role as Regional Development Pathway Coach.

GALA: The Club attended a two-day Gala in Mallow at the weekend. Congratulations to Sarah Quirke who came third in the 400IM and achieved two consideration times for Summer Nationals.

COMPETITION: The Munster Lake Competition is confirmed for Sunday 11/05/2025 on Lough Lein. Commencing at 1030 and finishing with all boats ashore for 1730hrs. Entry is E40 for a boatman competitor and E70 for non-boatman. The competition will also have the Over 50's option running with it so when entering, please indicate if taking part in this or not - one entry fee covers both if applicable. U10 SOCCER TEAM: Congratulations and well done to the U10 Girls soccer team after a thrilling Semi Final in Milltown. The girls were defeated 2-1 in play off to Castlegregory. The girls continued on determined, to place 3rd in the County Final, with a 2-0 win against Ballyduff. Fair play to all the girls they were fantastic, and huge thanks to their coach Sean and to the parents for their ongoing support.

ART & HANDWRITING: Kilcummin Community Games will be holding their Art/ Handwriting Competitions in Kilcummin National School on Wednesday 12th March from 5.30pm to 7.30 pm.
